Ooh cool. I might watch this next time I’m folding laundry.

I used to watch the hell out of the History Channel back with it was the WWII: Fuck Yeah channel, and not Aliens Man.

    2. Raphael

I always enjoyed reading and learning about WW2 in general, especially the Eastern Front. I’ll be watching this later today for sure, thanks!

14 parts, worth every minute, My favorite Battle was Prokhorovka, in the Kursk salient, the largest Tank Battle in History, and they show a very different view than I was taught.

Excellent, that’s gonna last me quite a while then.

They say that tying in football is like kissing your sister. Today, two teams from the Ohio Valley tied, so I would expect that there are enough fans with experience in both that there could be a statistically valid survey done.

I look forward to this advancement in the state of the science.

We should validate with college football. Does WVU play Kentucky this year?

    1. Tres Cool

      So is your sister hot?

      1. A Leap at the Wheel

She’s a classy Pittsburgh chick, which means if you disrespect her you won’t last long enough for the rest of the family to come after you.

Please recall that Pittsburgh’s stock is descended from people who invented the words “vendetta,” “stiletto,” and and “Valkyrie.”

        1. Tres Cool

I didnt know ‘classy’ and ‘Pittsburgh’ worked in the same sentence, unless applied in the negative.

/best Cleveland record in a year

          1. A Leap at the Wheel

IIRC, this is the Brownies best start to a season in 14 years, isn’t it?

          2. Nephilium

The fun stat that kept getting thrown up was that Ben Roethlisberger has the most QB wins in Cleveland since the 80’s. And I’ll call a tie against the Stillers as a decent day.

          3. Tres Cool

            Cleveland is currently un-defeated.

And my Ben-girls got lucky….but won.

Is She Thicc? asking for Tres!

        1. A Leap at the Wheel

She’s from the land of pirogi, stuffed shells, and kielbasa. The land where a salad isn’t a salad unless it has french fries on it. Of course she is.

          1. Tres Cool

            You have my attention….

          2. Nephilium

Wait, fries? Shouldn’t it be tater tots?

          3. A Leap at the Wheel

She doesn’t live here in minisooda. She lives in the Ohio Valley.

          4. Nephilium

I’ve spend my time in Pittsburgh, and had to explain that tots aren’t a standard topping.

          5. A Leap at the Wheel

That’s because there can be only one universal topping – ranch dressing. Goes on literally everything except pepperoni rolls.

          6. Pope Jimbo

Adam Corolla used to rant about how everything in the world came in “ranch flavor”. The bit that made me laugh was him talking about kids thinking this is normal and being mad when they are learning to eat pussy and find out there is no ranch flavor available.

            * Tots are the best.

          7. Nephilium

Ranch is just made of Buttermilk and sadness.

            /Gaffigan

          8. Tres Cool

            Ranch should be a condiment.
            ————nothing follows———

          9. C. Anacreon

Yes, no one can argue that, indeed, tater tots are nonpareil.

    2. Spudalicious

A tie for the Browns means they’ve already bested last years record.

      1. Nephilium

Well, they couldn’t do worse then last year…

    3. Pope Jimbo

Leap, you live here now. You are required by law to paint yourself purple every week and shout “Purple Pride!”

We do make exceptions for those who have an IQ so low that they might eat the purple body paint and get sick. If they are documented with having an IQ of less than 80, they don’t have to root for the VIkes. They are allowed to wear green and gold and root for the Packers in that case.

Holy crap, the Broncos beat the Seahawks. They’re g going to get my hopes up only to disappoint me.

    1. Pope Jimbo

      How did Case do?

My son and I didn’t notice much difference between Case’s performances last year and Cousin’s performance today.

Vikes were lucky that the 49ers dropped a couple picks. On the other hand, the NFL has to do something about stupid QB roughing penalties. I hate to be a “get off my lawn” guy, but the long TD pass that Garappolo threw if you watch the Vikes rusher on that play he pulled up because he was so worried about a roughing call.

      1. F. Stupidity Jr.

        25/39, 339 yards, 3 TD, 3 INT

I have no idea if Seattle’s defense is up to their Super Bowl standards, and I have no idea whether those INTs were wrong route picks, tipped, great defensive plays or bad throws. And of course, one game is only one game. In a vacuum, I’d rather have Cousins than Keenum, but looking over their career records it’s closer than I thought.

        https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/C/CousKi00.htm

        https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/K/KeenCa00.htm

        1. Seattle’s D is not the same, and they were missed 2 starters. I think Earl Thomas actually played.

      2. F. Stupidity Jr.

My son and I didn’t notice much difference between Case’s performances last year and Cousin’s performance today.

I checked the numbers – this was pretty much an average 2017 Keenum game by Cousins today.

    2. They’re not deep enough to be better than 6-10. Elway’s GM-ing is a mixed bag.

      1. Chipping Pioneer

Yeah, that is about what I expect.

  9. I’m still at work.

We had to roll back all the work today and are trying to clean up some messes.

    1. Nephilium

Ouch, sorry man. Here’s hoping you can roll the shit back and don’t just have to remediate.

      1. We tried, but the DBA left the archive logs from the day’s activity in place, so the rolled-back database picked up all the changes again.

  10. Gadianton

Spudalicious, if you’re still around, I’ve got a question for you. Last night in the open thread, you said (referring to Mormons) that “The husband gets to decide if the wife goes to heaven.” I’m curious where you heard that?

    1. Spudalicious

That was a simplified version heard from a Catholic but let me know what you think of this.

      http://www.utlm.org/onlineresources/resurrectwife.htm

      1. trshmnstr

The concept is quite similar to the Catholic concept of intercession of the saints. The idea that you have some person/people speaking into God’s ear on your behalf. Protestants, of course, vehemently oppose any type of intercession because they take the “Jesus as intercessor” concept very literally and seriously.

        1. creech

So the saints are like lobbyists? God: “What’s on my calendar today, Pete.” St. Peter: “You”ve got St. Katherine at 9am, St. Francis at 10am, your brother St. Jerome at 11am; lunch with your mom, and then you’re free the rest of the day. Your tee time with Bobby Jones, Arnie and Payne Stewart is at 2pm. And don’t embarass them by shooting an 18 again.”

          1. trshmnstr

Except for the part where God exists outside of space and time, you’ve got it. Addtional info in a very poorly formatted site

        2. Gadianton

The idea of Jesus as the only intercessor is one Latter-day Saints share with the Protestants.

      2. Gadianton

And at least one more article is borne. I won’t write an article directly responding to the piece, but I’ll have to write something which explains our beliefs about marriage. I’m already working on a series of articles about our view of the afterlife.

As with most such things, the link above is a mix of truth and error. I would agree with W. John Walsh (the apologist) that no husband chooses whether his wife will be resurrected or what degree of glory she will achieve. All people born on the earth will be resurrected, and only the Savior gets to decide what degree of glory you achieve.

I won’t discuss the temple endowment ceremony (because it’s sacred, and we don’t discuss it outside the temple), but this quote:

In the morning of the resurrection, this veil is to be lifted by the husband; otherwise no woman can see the face of the almighty in the next world

is balderdash. It is correct (as Walsh states) that husbands may be allowed to resurrect their wives. However, the idea that if there is no spouse (or if there is a spouse who did not live worthily) that s/he will denied his or her rightful degree of glory is nonsense. I say spouse because the requirement for marriage applies to both men and women. It is true that we believe that only people married in the temple can enter into exaltation (D&C 131:1-4), but only someone with a belief in an unjust God would believe that there is no plan in place for otherwise worthy people who didn’t find a spouse in mortality – or whose spouse wasn’t worthy. I recall having read an article roughly to that effect by a Church authority, but I don’t have it to hand. When I write the marriage article, I’ll have to track it down. My personal opinion is that during the Millennium (the thousand year reign of Christ on the earth) people who are otherwise worthy of exaltation, but are not married, will find a spouse, and be sealed together.

        1. Gadianton

          born not borne.

        2. Spudalicious

I look forward to reading your articles. For me, faith and religion are seperate issues but everyone is entitled to their beliefs.

          1. Gadianton

I would agree that faith and religion are separate. Faith, after all, is the “hope for things which are not seen, which are true.” (Alma 32:21, while a religion is a set of specific doctrines. One may have faith in a religion, but the the two are separate.

          2. Gadianton
        3. Gadianton

          I should have looked harder:

But what of the many mature members of the Church who are not married? Through no failing of their own, they deal with the trials of life alone. Be we [are] all reminded that, in the Lord’s own way and time, no blessings will be withheld from His faithful Saints. The Lord will judge and reward each individual according to heartfelt desire as well as deed.

          Elder Russell M. Nelson
          October General Conference 2008

Through a sheet counts, right ?

  11. Could one of you Idaho glibs help me out with something? One of my friends moved from Alaska to Boise this year and he really likes it. He says Idaho is really cool “except for the Nazis up north”…..would you kindly help me short-circuit this so I can understand what that might mean?

    1. Spudalicious

The Aryan Nation was founded in Sandpoint Idaho. They were flushed out 20 years ago. There are still pockets but the “Nazis up North” is blown way out of our proportion.

      1. Ah, okay. I figured it was going to be Neo-Nazi or militia movement. I am pleased it has a kernel of truth.

      2. Sandpoint Idaho.

        David Lynch, confirmed Nazi.

    2. Not an Idaglib, but I think the Idaho panhandle used to be a hotbed for White Supremacy groups. Not sure how true it is anymore though.

      1. Plinker762

I think the number of them was exaggerated but I remember seeing a few around Hayden but that was about 18 years ago. There were more of them in the Portland area than north idaho, but of course the there is a larger population there.

    3. Plinker762

The Nazis have been replaced with Californians, I’m not sure which are worse.

      1. My friend is originally from New Hampshire. Possibly worse? ;-D

        1. Plinker762

We had a lot of French-Canadians in northern NH, so he could be.

          1. BakedPenguin

            Thanks, Pomp. Thanks, Plinker.

        2. Hyperion

I’m starting to believe… OK, I already believed it possible, but I’m beginning to believe it more. So, we have some creepy neighbors moved down here from CT. They were creepy to begin with. That accent is like scratching nails across chalkboard and the attitude matches. But a month or so ago, I think something happened with the husband. They’re retired, I’m just guessing, in their 70s. I’ve only seen the guy a couple of times since then, I think hes’s disabled now and maybe doesn’t go out of the house much. This is when I noted that the wife’s behavior started to take a turn for the more obnoxious. Whenever I see her outside she seems to go out of her way to… for better words, ambush you. When ambush happens, she seems to be judging you, like you have actually … fuck, I don’t even know. Anyway, 2 days ago, someone is knocking at my door and I opened it, it’s her. And she says ‘This was by your mailbox’, in a sort of nasty cynical voice. I looked and she has a package. I didn’t respond because I’m thinking ‘WTF? Why are you getting my mail and walking over here?’ I really wanted to say ‘And? Why are you taking my stuff? It’s not yours, take it back where you found it’. Geebus weird fucking shit. The person just exudes hatefulness. Maybe someone native to the NE can explain this type behavior to me?

          1. Rhywun

LOL I’m not rising to that bait.

          2. So, I kill New Yorkers all the time, but I’ve got to say most of the people I’ve met from the city proper have actually been very friendly. I’ve never been to NYC, so maybe shit changes on home turf, but as tourists or guests they’re very nice.

          3. Kill, of course, being a turn of phrase equivalent to busting the balls of.

          4. Hyperion

It wasn’t supposed to be bait.

          5. Rhywun

Heh OK. I’ll just say that behavior strikes me as more “suburban nosy neighbor” than “northeast”. I’ve never encountered it in NYC but that could be because people tend not to get in other people’s business like that.

          6. I’ve lived basically all my life in the DC metro, and even I’m occasionally surprised by how reflexively shitty people are here. Like when I leave town for more than, say, a week, when I come back I’m stunned by the fact that like every third interaction I have with a stranger is hostile. So, maybe that’s just how it is all along the megalopolis. Because, as I think about it, I’ve met people from VT and ME who were very nice, but people from eastern PA, NYC area, Jersey, mostly dicks. Some of them warmed up and were fine, but the opener was to be shitty like right off the bat.

          7. Rufus the Monocled

All I know is man people are surly and grumpy at grocery stores in Delaware.

          8. Hyperion

I remember when they first moved here. She seemed pretty nice. He did too, but he had a one track theme ‘I went to Yale, I taught at Yale’, and you were obviously expected to know that and have great revere for it, and just in case, he was going to remind you every time you talk to him from this point forward, forever. I remember one guy in the neighborhood, I think they’re from Atlanta, but definitely from somewhere in the South, telling me ‘I can’t stand those people’. My wife did not like them right off. I was a lot more tolerant, but good grief, when you start getting my mail and bring it to me like it’s some sort of indictment, then I’m close to telling you to get away from here and do not come back.

          9. Plinker762

Yale might be the key. I guess you could said something like “oh, you couldn’t make it into Harvard?”

          10. Rhywun

The dicks I encounter on a regular basis in NYC are almost all employed by the government in some form. Regular people are just fine in my experience. NJ, though… holy shit. Five years of commuting from NYC to NJ opened my eyes on that score.

          11. BakedPenguin

South Park’s Jersey Shore parody comes to mind. That said, the Jersey people I’ve met had the same decent / jerk ratio as people from anywhere else.

I can believe the DC beltway has a much higher asshole ratio than other places in the US, if only b/c of self-selection of people who want to be in the DC beltway.

          12. trshmnstr

even I’m occasionally surprised by how reflexively shitty people are here

Yep. It took a while to adjust to it for us. Not so much that people are abrasive as much as they are aloof and a bit smug.

Even the difference between people out here in the far west ‘burbs versus people inside the beltway is astounding.

          13. Rufus the Monocled

Next she’ll be calling and breathing into the phone.

THE CALL IS COMING FROM INSIDE THE CONDO!

Is that still a thing by the way? The breathing heavy into a phone?

That happened to my sister for seven straight days at 3am back in the 80s.

          14. Hyperion

I was telling my wife and we talked about it. I’m starting to wonder if it’s because no one in the community will talk to her now, and because I was friendly before, she sees some sort of opportunity to force me to talk to her. It’s a bad approach, but maybe the only one she knows. It’s just creepy as fuck.

          15. Rufus the Monocled

You should tell the wife you banged several chicks (at least you think they were) on Yale grounds and then wink like Otter.

          16. Hyperion

“You should tell the wife you banged several chicks”

I’m pretty sure this is a bad idea. I mean as in I don’t want her to getting any ideas.

          17. Plinker762

      1. Plinker762

That shit went down just after I moved out here. It really opened my eyes about the reality of law enforcement and the media. The media went on and on about the evil white supremacist murdering the valiant marshal (all before blue lives matter). Then I started to see more details about the behavior of the FBI and media and now I don’t trust either.

Y’all are great. I’m drunk. Good night. ?

      But…. What are you eating?

      1. one true athena

        Well, I don’t know, until I’m there, do I?

I had scallops because I like scallops and I find them a good test for the chef at a new restaurant. (Driftwood in RPV – Scallops were a bit underdone regretfully, but the appetizer deviled eggs were delish)

        1. Spudalicious

If I have a choice between underdone and overdone scallops, I’ll take underdone.

          1. one true athena

yes that’s certainly true. better a bit under than rubber.

            thanks!

    1. Rufus the Monocled

It’s also this shtick of turning yourself into a victim after you act like an idiot.

    4. quincy

She has only won 23 Grand Slam titles. Imagine what she could have done if sexism and racism weren’t holding her back.

      1. Right? I mean, how sexist that she, among all those other women, was called out for being coached, losing her shit, and then mouthing off about it after multiple warnings.

Also, fuck Billie Jean King, who turned it into one of these, “Oh, well, when a woman does it she’s ‘hysterical’, when a man does it he’s ‘outspoken’.” Really? I was young at the time but I don’t recall a whole lot of people cheering McEnroe on for his “outspokeness”. Sorry, but when you overreact because your emotions get the better of you, yes, you’re hysterical, whether or not you have a dick and balls. There are plenty of women who are outspoken and passionate without losing their fuckin’ marbles because they haven’t gotten their way.

        1. Yusef drives a Kia

McEnroe was an Ass, IIRC, and he paid for it, last I saw, Women played against Women, Serena got Beat twice by a little Japanese Girl who Idolized Her, She should be proud, I would be, Fucking Cunt

          1. trshmnstr

He’s amazing in the booth now. Some of his arrogant youthful edge is gone, but he still speaks his mind. I can respect a commentator who is willing to call players out when they’re being lazy or stupid on the court

          2. BakedPenguin

I was still watching tennis when he first went into the booth. I remember being amazed at what he brought. Non-vapid commentary with a great deal of insight. I was expecting the “you can NOT be serious!” part of him to be in evidence, but it really wasn’t.

          3. Rhywun

            Yeah, he’s like an elder-stateman teddy-bear now.

        2. quincy

But the ump stole a point! No profesional tennis player has ever recovered from being down love-15, ever in the recorded history of tennis. Ever.

Serena, honey, your shit serves that day stole more points from you than the umpire ever did. Grow up.

        3. McEnroe was defaulted at the 1990 Australian Open for a third code violation. It was in part because of that incident that the rule was changed to make third and subsequent violations a game penalty instead of a match penalty.

I mean, I know its only the 1st game. But….

    1. Yusef drives a Kia

      He’s good, but no Favre
/My favorite player of all Time, a Real player, no , drugs don’t count, everyone does them.

      1. whiz

Favre was great, but Rodgers is better: 1) Better passer rating, and 2) 4:1 TD:Int ratio (compared to 3:2 for Favre). The latter comparison is hugely in favor of Rodgers.

        1. Tundra

That and the motherfucker is about to overcome 0-20 to win the game.

        2. F. Stupidity Jr.

If every QB that ever lived was 22 years old and I had the first pick, I’d take Rodgers.

          1. slumbrew

Correct. 22 year old Brady pales in comparison. However…

          2. straffinrun

5000+ yds, 48 TDs/17 INTs at age 22/23. You may be forgetting someone.

          3. whiz

Dan Marino? Great as well, but that was by far his best season. Overall, fewer yds/att, lower comp pct., 1.6:1 TD/Int.

          4. F. Stupidity Jr.

That was a fantastic year by Marino. But I’d still rather have Rodgers. On top of his ability to make any throw, Rodgers is mobile, and Marino was tar-pit slow.

As for Brady, I think the world of his competitive fire. But he’s playing for the best football program there ever was. All those years Manning and Brady going head-to-head, Brady didn’t once have to contend with Bill Belichick scheming to defeat him. Even with all his organizational advantages, Brady is 5-3 in Super Bowls, and they always just barely won the 5 that they did. Joe Montana was 4-0; two of those were close (26-21 in the first Cincy SB, 20-16 in the second), but the other two were blowouts. The biggest margin of victory for Brady was 6 points – in an overtime game. The win over Seattle was by four, and they would have lost that one if not for an atrociously stupid play call by the Seahawks. The other three wins were by three points a piece.

          5. straffinrun

Lots of variables make this an impossible call. Defenses in the 80’s vs today, quality of receivers, effectiveness of running game etc. I choose Marino because that much arm strength combined with touch and high IQ fits in any era.

      2. whiz

Tonight’s game is a good example. (Go Pack!)

  32. Rhywun

This might be the most one-sided “news” story I’ve ever seen.

This is like the fourth article I’ve seen written entirely from the side of the “hero hobo” (yes, that’s from the article).

The couple he’s suing must be so busy gallivanting around the world on the junkie’s GoFundMe money and posting it on social media that they don’t have time to tell their side of the story.

Or maybe… something’s rotten about the whole tale.

    1. slumbrew

“Everyone is terrible” covers that – “he is a damn junkie, he shot up all they money they passed to him, then they spent the rest” is totally believable.

      1. Rhywun

        “Everyone is terrible” covers that

Yeah, I was thinking that, which led me to… what if the whole thing was a hoax gone awry? Maybe the hobo didn’t get his “cut”.

I remember when that first came out. MTV was showing it about every 4th song.

Also, if you’re above 30, you have to get used to songs of your youth being in commercials. I’ve said this before, but it remains relevant – I remember when listening to the Ramones was way outre. Now their songs about pinheads are selling SUVs. I’m surprised ‘53rd & 3rd‘ hasn’t been used in a beer commercial.

Growing up in the country, everything closing at 9pm, radio stations going off air at midnight, etc. Only the “bad” kids at school listening hard rock, lol. Definitely more exposure to metal in college. (Iron Maiden played at RPI while I was there and like a dumb ass I didn’t go) Fast forward to after 2000 and I real started to get into Dio. Just home from work; tucking into a local beer – Muscat Love from Great South Bay Brewery in beautiful Bayshore, Lawnguy Land. It is a cheerful ‘meh’; not so bad as to pour out but certainly not something I would get again. It’s a (from the label) “Flavored Belgian Style Tripel Ale Brewed With Muscat Grape Juice”. On opening, it smelled vaguely like laundry that should have been put in the dryer an hour ago but doesn’t taste bad. It doesn’t taste good, but it doesn’t taste bad, leaving a slightly sour tang on the sides of my tongue. It’s a deuce-deuce at 11% ABV so I have a wee buzz and I’m FUCKING LOVING this Soviet Storm Ostfront series one of y’all linked yesterday (thank you).
