  1. Sinko your mayo in some hotties.

Lots of amazing choices, but I’m not sure you need to go any further than 4. Can’t get much more straight to the point than that.

    1. Libertesian

      4 frightened me… 67, 72, & 98 FTW

    2. Spudalicious

Nice lineup. 11 popped my cork.

    3. Gustave Lytton

      The answer is 42.

    4. But Enough About Me

I have number 10 in my bedroom, and several other places in my house. She rocks, and you can get her even cheaper on eBay (but make sure you get the COB [chip on board] version, it’s incredibly bright).

  2. Warren Buffet can eat shit.

    “I should pay higher taxes!”

Here’s the address to send your money asshole.

    Attn Dept G
    Bureau of the Fiscal Service
    P. O. Box 2188
    Parkersburg, WV 26106-2188

    1. Libertesian

I’d rather see Buffett donate his billions to charity (via Gates Foundation) than to the Feds.

      1. westernsloper

Gates Foundation? I admit I am not up on the Gates Foundation because I really don’t give a shit, but Gates never seemed to be a friend of liberty unless it was his and his alone. I am not sure he needs more money for that. I do recall they gave a bunch for aids meds for Africa.

        1. DiegoF

Yeah seemed like an odd choice to me too. Gates is a technocrat, the guy with the sketches of Plans for An Improved Society of Tomorrow strewn across his workroom. where he thinks of every problem faced by any persons in society as something for intelligent elites to engineer a solution to from the top. Insofar as that fails to be done he assumes it’s because the right, smart people are not in power to make and implement the plans. His causes reflect this.

He is one of the very most benign such people, and certainly is a net asset to society given a lot of good other shit he does; Mike Bloomberg is probably the most malevolent. But he is one of them nonetheless, most certainly. Do not trust techies; this is how they truly think!

    2. straffinrun

The old “just following orders” defense.

  3. ZARDOZ LEAVES HIS CHOSEN ONES WITH THE GIFT OF THE FINEST ANIMATED SHORT EVER MADE FOR BRUTALS.

Some would argue What’s Opera, Doc? or Duck Amuck.

As as far as I could tell, the National Film Registry hasn’t selected a single Tom and Jerry short.

    1. DiegoF

Some might suggest that this is appropriate to the occasion. I was always partial.

    2. Rhywun

      -1 wabbit

    3. Not Adahn

Comparing What’s Opera Doc with The Rabbit of Seville… man, their animation completely went to shit.

      1. DiegoF

Oh my God you’re right! It is awful. Interesting that conventional wisdom doesn’t seem to have noticed that among all the laudits laid on it as a classic.

        1. Not Adahn

The most care and detail was on the fat horse’s ass as it was sitting down.

          1. DiegoF

You know, that was exactly my observation. I thought for a second my perception had become too ass-centric from too much Heroic Mulatto interaction, but it’s good to see my conclusions confirmed.

      2. Rhywun

        Wow, yup.

        But Wagner!

  4. Juvenile Bluster

    I hate basketball.

    1. There are people who don’t?

      1. straffinrun

I used to love it. Maurice Cheeks, Andrew Toney, Dominique Wilkins, The old Celtics (loved to hate them). I still pull my socks up to my knees in honor of Michael Cooper.

        1. Rufus the Monocled

I was a big Sixers fan. Dr. J, Moses to go along with those you mentioned.

Hey, don’t forget Spud Webb and Mugsy Bogues!

    2. Rhywun

Never watched a game on TV. Saw a couple live games to support the team otherwise meh.

  5. Elon’s love interest isn’t Elon Musk?

    1. Libertesian

Spit my beer… He would be easier on his wallet than that apparent gold-digger.

    2. straffinrun

Elon got the govt to pass a law stating she couldn’t date anyone else.

  6. Apparently today is the day for games to conspire to try to make me ragequit.

    1. Why, what are they doing?

      1. Aside from the statistically improbable number of head shots in BattleTech there was the pilup of cultists in FarCry (plus the random honey badger attack) when all I wanted to do was solve the damn jumping puzzle over the electrified water. and so I came here to vent before wandering back.

        1. I replayed the mission in BattleTech, and there were fewer statistically improbable headshots, so I’m all right now.

          1. Whew, we were all on pins and needles!!!!

          2. Your life is too exciting, you should try to go somewhere and relax.

        2. Ooo… plus I finally salvaged a complete Catapult. LRMs for days…

          1. Nephilium

How far into BattleTech are you? I had to backtrack after I ran into the difficulty spike on one of the story missions to build up some heavier mechs for the mission.

          2. I finished the story mission where you had to blow up traffic control before the enemy dropship landed. I’m doing resource collecting before I see how bad the next one is.

For some reason the skull rating is a poor indicator of the actual difficulty of the story missions when compared to the random contracts.

          3. Nephilium

Ok… I’m a bit further ahead in the story missions. The developers are working on a patch to correct the skull ratings/difficulty spikes on some of the story missions. The one I ran into has a large amount of commentary online about the difficulty spike, with the people claiming it was easy having one or two heavy mechs in their squad.

And I know just what you mean about the headshots. On that traffic control mission, I had cleared everything out but two enemy mechs, both of which were fairly stripped of armor. One of the enemy mechs turned around and got two head shots on my mech piloted by Glitch, blowing the head off. That was the first and only damage Glitch had taken through the whole mission. I’ve only gotten lucky taking out an enemy that way once with a called shot.

          4. I’m just sad that this is set too early for my MadCat 🙁

(Any of you Clanner scum try to claim it’s a Timberwolf, and I will crush you)

          5. Nephilium

There’s a good chance that we’ll get some DLC with new story lines. I’m hoping for at least one that deals with the Clans (I’d even be happy with a sequel dealing with the clans). I’ve been loving this game so far. After I beat it, I’ll probably go back and try an HonorMan run (assuming that IronMan mode isn’t put in before that).

          6. I’m going to let them iron out the bugs before I start asking whether there’s DLC in the pipe.

          7. The one feature I’d like would be the ability to mothball a mech without stripping the gear from it. So that I don’t have to remember what I customized it to.

          8. Not Adahn

            Kerensky 4 lyfe, stravag

          9. Not Adahn

Primitive freebirth tech putting my replay in the wrong place.

          10. Just shows typical vatgrown lack of mental adaptability.

          11. Nephilium

Mercenaries are the only correct answer. I’ll fight for whoever will pay for my services. Salvage, cash, or transport. We don’t fight for free. The only honor in war is honoring the contract.

          12. The service of my Mechs is up for hire, not my opinions.

          13. Speaking of, I just had a job that almost made me feel sorry for the enemy. I brought a heavy lance and the defenders turned out to be two light lances strung out along my axis of approach. They ended up popping almost as fast as I could advance. I was feeling sorry for them until they got a headshot and injured Shivers (the only hired mechwarrior not to have died horribly before gaining experience).

Turned out the did have a medium. This shadowhawk lost the left leg to Glitch’s opening salvo, so I started called shots against the right leg… and they managed to blow up every other part of that Shadowhawk Except the right leg.

  7. Hyperion

Well, I’m a make my effort here.

Just my opinion, greatest … Hispanic? Music Link of all time?

    How far is heaven

      1. egould310

        Good tune

        1. Rhywun

Always dug this song. Did not know of their origin at all.

    1. egould310

Hispanics from somewhere en Mehico making the noisy rock music https://youtu.be/epddZMiavUw

      1. Rhywun

        I like that.

Here is my fave Mexican band.

        1. egould310

Not my cup of tea. But thanks for linking. This will literally be my wife’s favorite band in two weeks.

          1. egould310

Yep. I forwarded this video to my wife. Now she is forwarding more videos. Plus more Mexican industrial/goth bands. Yay!

          2. DiegoF

OT but these little girls certainly can jam!

          3. egould310

Nice guitar. And bass. Sweet drum set. And they can play pretty good. I liked the bass players monologue during the breakdown. Pretty cute.

          4. Rhywun

She sounds like a keeper. The only other example of the species I know is Amduscia – also highly recommended.

      2. Rhywun

OMG they want “$100 MXN” for the EP. I’m hoping that’s a smaller number in USD.

        1. But Enough About Me

Well, when I was in Cancun a few months ago, $20 MXN or $1 US was an average tip for a bar drink at the resort, so yeah, it’s pretty cheap.

    2. I forget do injuns count as spics? We kicked both of them off the same land I think it counts.

      1. egould310
      2. westernsloper

If you are doing injuns, don’t forget these guys.
The video to the song may have been provided by Q.

  8. Anyhow, this sad story was on the TV news at dinner. (Synopsis for those who don’t read the links: a woman who kidnapped a newborn from a hospital back in 1998 and raised the girl to adulthood finally gave herself up and admitted everything in court.)

The Chyron on the TV had her name and “Accused Kidnapper”. No, you fucking idiots, she’s admitting it and pleading guilty! And these are the same local TV news idiots who show mug shots as though arrestees are already guilty.

    1. Rhywun

      Chyron

Funny how I saw that word for the first time in my life earlier today and here it is again.

      I’ll drink to that.

      1. It’s like aglet, you can go decades without hearing it, then all of a sudden, it’s everywhere.

        1. Rhywun

That’s the shoelace hole thing, right? Close, but not quite.

Yeah, that one always comes up in exactly this context, and nowhere else.

  9. straffinrun

The People’s Daily said the talks “laid solid foundation for further talks on trade and economic cooperation, and for ultimately achieving benefits (to both countries) and win-win results”.

My daily leaves a solid foundation every morning.

  10. Libertesian

What are you drinking right now?
    Me: this (2015 vintage)

    1. Cool “this”.

  11. Sean

    All hail Zardoz!

I have a belly full of bbq and liquor. Life is good.

    1. That sure sounds like it!

    2. egould310

WIH is up with Zed’s nose?

    1. Huh…a bit red, yes?

      1. DiegoF

It’s just rosacea! Like Churchill’s! Honestly I don’t know what you or other acne-privileged individuals are implying regarding racist stereotypes about traditional forms of celebration of this proud holiday. But I don’t like it one bit.

      2. Rhywun

Well, there’s that… and the enormous circular chunk cut out of the right side of it.

  13. CPRM

THE FINEST ANIMATED SHORT EVER MADE FOR BRUTALS.

    Ahem.

    1. DiegoF

I thought you were linking to a teaser of a new one, you tease!

  14. Gordilocks

    HAIL ZARDOZ, ZARDOZ HAIL

The Evil of My Penis has finally born fruit –

Yesterday, May 4th, at 1430hrs, after 42 hours of labour, and ultimately, a Caesarean Section, Mrs Gordilocks brought unto the Universe a beautiful baby girl, weighing in at 9lbs 5oz.

I am heavily armed and will rebuke all Brutal Exterminators, STEVE SMITH, Hats and Hairs, or any other such nonsense from my gorgeous little girl.

    1. Rhywun

      Nice knowing you.

    2. DiegoF

Hail the Earth’s new she-brutal! May she grow to lead us wisely! Congratulations!

    3. Not Adahn

      Gratz!

    4. mexican sharpshooter

      Congratulations!

      *loads magazines, nods at Zardoz*

      1. Gordilocks

A sharpshooter needs magazines for only three brutals?

        1. mexican sharpshooter

          I like to be thorough.

    5. Wow…congrats, and I hope Mrs. G is ok!

      1. Gordilocks

Mrs G is great, and is currently having a well deserved sleep. I’ve got the kiddo sleeping on me and checking in with the first quiet time we’ve had in a week.

    6. 42 hours of labor? Yikes.

      1. Gordilocks

Yeah man, my wife is a champ. We were hoping for natural birth, but the kid is huge and Mrs G just couldn’t get her out.

That said, somehow she avoided that bloated puffy face that new moms have at delivery. Still looks gorgeous, she and baby are doing great.

        1. DiegoF

Didn’t even see that! It took her two days to admit defeat? Now that is something! Is that normal for the fairer sex, or just Mrs. G?

          1. Gordilocks

I like to think it less admitting defeat and more ‘get the kid out before something bad happens’.

    7. westernsloper

Congratulations to you and Mrs Gordi. 42 hours? Jesus. Too bad she could not have held off for ten more hours though so you could name the kid Cinco de Drinkolocks.

      1. DiegoF

If you didn’t know Gordi’s given name you’d think it was a cultural appropriation from both Mexicans and blacks, who of course invented dreadlocks.

        1. Rhywun

You would think a Chinese basketball player who is in all likelihood surrounded by blacks all day wouldn’t do that to his hair if said blacks gave a single shit about it. IOW The Root’s pretensions of speaking for all black people is a bit suspect IMHO.

          1. DiegoF

Well, all black people are not vile racists and pathetic human beings, so probably not.

    8. egould310

      Congratulations man!

    9. Rufus the Monocled

      Congrats!

    10. Festus

42 hours? Oh man, you’d better get to work on those flower beds or this will not turn out well for you! All kidding aside, Congrats, Friend!

      1. dbleagle

Congrats to you both and a “hearty welcome and wreath” for the young Glib.

    11. Tulip

Congratulations! Nine plus pounds? Holy crap! Congratulations (and sympathy) to Mrs. g

    12. Tundra

I’m really happy for you. My daughter is one of the coolest people I’ve ever known.

All my best to you and the family!

    13. Count Potato

      Congratulations!

    14. SP

      Congratulations! That’s so cool.

(And I can sympathize with Mrs G: Webdom was 9 lbs 15 oz.)

      1. CPRM

She’s off the market, stop trying to make a sales pitch.

    15. Chafed

That’s great news Gordi. Congratulations to you and your wife.

ZARDOZ MUST WARN THE BRUTAL MUSK THAT THE PENIS IS EVIL! KNOCK IT OFF, ELON

Nice. I half expected her to be plain, Like Zuckerberg’s girl or hideous.

    1. DiegoF

That the Zuck married his college sweetheart is probably the most humanizing thing about him. Unless you’re a true cynic and theorize that his alien robot circuitry has not been programmed to simulate human facial perceptions.

    2. Rhywun

Zuck’s not exactly a looker himself. Though of course other dynamics are often at play here.

      1. DiegoF

No. I always thought he looked like what an alien would think healthy humans looked like if he had only seen a burn victim. But that is precisely my point; he stuck with the Harvard chick (already a shockingly unlooksy pool right there) that he could get as a middle-class, not very good looking, not very personable, incredibly awkward computer nerd. He didn’t go for anyone he could pull at a later time.

Which is probably the most reliable strategy, of course, from a character perspective. I don’t want to suggest that being super rich, successful, and/or famous is a heavy cross by any means. But it does make it that much harder to discern real quality friends from the crowd. Chris Rock said it’s like going through life as a woman with gigantic titties.

        1. DiegoF

Also I am sure Mrs. Zuck is quite lovely, and that they love each other very much. I don’t mean to sound too cynical here.

  16. Juvenile Bluster

Thomas Wictor blocked me on Twitter. This is the saddest day since James Woods blocked me.

    1. DiegoF

WTF did you do to piss these national treasures off?

      1. Juvenile Bluster

I can’t remember why Woods blocked me.

Wictor blocked me because he went off on a rant about anime and waifus and… whatever … and how he was the only heterosexual white person without a Japanese GF when he lived in Japan (a lot to unpack there), so I decided I was bored and trolled him with anime pictures. And they were all pure.

    2. Gordilocks

Is it better that I’ve not heard of either of these people?

      1. Rhywun

        James Woods? Seriously?

        1. Gordilocks

Sounds like a fairly common name …. buddy in the photo looks vaguely familiar.

    3. Rhywun

No idea who Wictor is but the second one would bum me out.

  17. Spudalicious

It’s hard to believe that cultural appropriation can taste so good. Street tacos were sublime. The only improvement would have been using wild duck breast instead of skirt steak.

Time to switch from mezcal to good ole American bourbon.

    1. DiegoF

I wish I could become a mezcal nerd but I can’t even swallow smoky liquor. Only gin makes me gag more.

      1. Spudalicious

It’s an acquired taste. I hate gin.

      2. But Enough About Me

Forget mezcal. Those in the know only settle for Bacanora.

        1. Spudalicious

Mezcal by a different name, aka, marketing.

    2. egould310

American bourbon! Had a Spring Mill bourbon at lunch today. Apparently it’s a “Indiana bourbon “. And an Old Grandad 100 proof. Now I’m sipping an Evan Williams and Perrier. Cheers!!

      1. Spudalicious

Nice! Old Forester 1897 neat with a water back. Stagg Jr. waiting in the wings for a nice topper for the evening.

  18. DiegoF

Also I forgot to thank ZARDOZ for giving us the day off from cleansing and wishing us well in our merriment. That was very nice of him!

  19. westernsloper

The railroad business also posted a gain in profit due to increased revenues per car as fuel prices rose.

And thus why Buffett supports anti-pipeline environmentalist nut balls and why they support him. He has lots of money.

    1. DiegoF

How good was the Indians’ legal-historical claim on that Standing Rock business BTW? I was never able to look into it deeply enough to make sense of it.

      1. westernsloper

To be honest I never could figure it out either. It totally depended on who was talking. Experts everywhere. I do think the Standing Rock crowd were assholes and mostly outside protestors, but the biggest real world claim I heard for them moving the pipeline from that crossing is they did move it for Fargo(?) (Some city) when they complained but told them damn injuns to fuck off. Just move it, ya it will cost more, but whatever in the long run. That is obviously my ignorant opinion on other routes, but making ignorant opinions is something I am good at. Truth probably is the Standing Rock protestors would have protested regardless of where the pipeline crossed because they did not want a pipeline and the res was just a handy prop.

        1. DiegoF

Oh yeah certainly the protesters were just hippie assholes who were trying to thwart any pipeline because they are bizarre Luddites who are doing all they can to thwart oil and make it less viable including keeping it to much more environmentally hazardous surface transport. They look at the substance that saved every whale in the sea and lifted the entire human race out of tens of millennia of miserable poverty, and all they see is pure, black evil. And they are firmly ensconcing themselves ever more each day into the driver’s seat of the leftward two-thirds of the political spectrum. Also, in true King of the Hill fashion the “Earth children” were actually inconsiderate slobs who left the protest site strewn with their filth and garbage for the Indians to clean up.

I just remember hearing the Indians themselves suggest, in the middle of all that “sacred to our people” mumbo jumbo that they have become experts at for manipulating urban white guilt, they had some sort of actual legal rights claim to the pipeline route that the Feds should have negotiated with. I was wondering about that.

          1. Juvenile Bluster

And even all that wouldn’t annoy me nearly as much if they were willing to accept nuclear power plants being built and maintained.

          2. DiegoF

I also can’t make sense of nuclear. I really, really want to like it. It clearly would be the new petroleum in terms of its environmental and transformational power for our society, the gateway to an immense new world of “clean” energy. And I have an unmitigated delight (well, horror when I think about how they are still getting their way) in seeing the greenies’ ridiculous and unprincipled discomfort with it.

That said, I also hear people claim it is not yet cost-effective and still needs massive subsidies. I cannot abide energy subsidies, period. Not yet commercially viable on its own, genuinely, under the natural human system of voluntary mutual exchange, means not viable.

          3. Festus

Yer a youngling! You didn’t grow up under the pall of Three Mile island and “The China Syndrome”. Nuclear power was humming along quite nicely until those things happened. Wifey is still staunchly anti-nuke because she grew up near the tri-cities in Washington State.

  20. egould310

Bugs Bunny massages Fudds scalp with his toes and then prepares a fruit salad on Fudd’s head. Classic.

Bugs Bunny is probably my role model.

    1. DiegoF

Bugs Bunny is easily the greatest cartoon character of all time and there isn’t even a close second. (He is one of the greatest characters ever to appear in any medium, I’d say. No survey of the history of fiction would be complete without him.) But there are a lot of strong characters in Looney Tunes, whereas the only true character in the entire Disney recurring counterpart is Donald Duck. (Though he is quite strong. The definitive Disney WWII propaganda short is one of the greatest masterpieces ever filmed, beautiful and emotionally moving even after all these years; nothing Looney Tunes ever did even came close. And obviously during the ’80s the Duck family continued to produce strong content.)

      1. Derpetologist

I like Homer Simpson and Eric Cartman better.

        1. Don Escaped Texas

          kick ass

      2. Rhywun

Not a Disney fan but I’ll save that for later.

        Pretty much agree about Bugs.

      3. Pan Zagloba

Scrooge McDuck is the greatest American who ever lived!

        1. Juvenile Bluster

          Scrooge is Scottish!

          Greatest American cartoon characters:

          1. Bugs Bunny
          2-4. Bugs Bunny
          5-19. Bugs Bunny
          20. Homer Simpson

Though an appropriation from both Scottish and avian culture, Scrooge McDuck is an inspiring embodiment of the American immigrant ideal and one of the richest and most nuanced (and all around fun) characters in children’s television history. Ditto Darkwing.

I’m actually half not kidding about Scrooge and immigrants. I felt him kind of personally inspiring and relatable as a boy, the way I bet earlier generations of immigrant kids felt about the real-life immigrant business titans he is collectively based on.

      4. Heroic Mulatto

        Eh.

Even at the tender age of 5, I thought Bugs Bunny was an stupid asshole and the Looney Tunes in general was obnoxious and unfunny.

Thank God I had stuff like this to watch instead.

        1. Rufus the Monocled

That’s quite the remarkable proclamation there Mr. Mulatto.

          1. Heroic Mulatto

I preferred action and adventure to mindless slapstick interspersed with a bunch of obscure (to a kid of the 80s) references to 30s and 40s Hollywood.

          2. DiegoF

We were born closer to WWII than to the present. And many aspects of culture were still intact at that time, and did not change nearly as rapidly as they do now. And people who could were alive for some of the older stuff were still quite in control of the society and culture being produced at the time. So I don’t recall being so out of my depth with the content and style on display. It didn’t seem that alien to me.

          3. Heroic Mulatto

It’s not as much as “alien” as much as I didn’t give a shit that Bugs Bunny was impersonating James Cagney. It wasn’t funny to me.

        2. DiegoF

You were a weirder kid than you are an adult.

The thing about our age cohort is that the new stuff was still being mixed in with the classic American cartoons in our diet. You’d sit down and watch a show and brand new stuff would be interspersed with shit from as far back as the 30s! (Also there were some 30s live action shit on TV like the Stooges, but never mind.) It was all the same to us, which meant indeed that we did not have discerning taste, because we were as entertained by what we now view as utter crap as we were by the quality. But most of us never actually thought the good shit was worse.

Not that all of the new stuff was bad either. (Though the good new stuff didn’t really start coming in much until the ’90s I think, by which time I was aging out a bit.) I think kids today have wider exposure to newer stuff, given the increased production and amount of Japanese content available, but they don’t go as far back in time as we did; they don’t really do the American classics.

          1. Festus

I play vintage Bugs Bunny cartoons for my my Grandchildren and they find them quite delightful. Harrumph! You are just plain wrong on this one, HM!

As far as Looney Tunes goes, I liked Marvin the Martian and Yosemite Sam more than Bugs.

Marvin is a calm, soft-spoken creature who sees nothing wrong at all about obliterating the Earth for obstructing his view of Venus.

Sam is a violent, trigger-happy loudmouth.

The Tasmanian devil was pretty good too.

    1. DiegoF

Death is always a tragedy. My condolences to the bereaved. That said, fucking cool! Is this the first known incidence of giraffe-human aggression? My favorite was the zookeeper who was killed by the anteater. Motherfuckers don’t even have mouths other than a giant harmless hose thing. But they do have those incredibly long claws that they use to tear the ant nests open. And this little guy reared up on his hind legs all of a sudden and slashed through the keeper’s torso Mortal Kombat style.

One of these days some motherfucker is going to get himself killed by a penguin and put all previous deaths to shame.

Happy 200th Birthday Karl Marx! You believed that everyone should have a seat at the table & that the greed of the rich would eventually bring us all down. You believed that everyone deserves a slice of the pie. You knew that the super wealthy were out to grab whatever they could

Over the years there were ruthless men who tried to use your name (much as the alt right haters use Jesus’ name) to pull the wool over people’s eyes. Yet much of Europe now practices much of your philosophy & people are taken care of. And we have Bernie! Democratic socialism!

Though the rich have sought to distort him or even use him, time has shown that, in the end, Marx was actually mostly right & that the aristocrats, the slave owners, the bankers and Goldman Sachs were wrong… “Happy Birthday, Karl Marx. You Were Right!”

Study: Climate skeptics engage in more eco-friendly behavior than climate alarmists
    https://www.thecollegefix.com/post/44701/

    ***
While policy preferences of group members tracked with their beliefs, their behaviors largely did not: Skeptics reported using public transportation, buying eco-friendly products, and using reusable bags more often than those in the other two categories.

This pattern was found consistently through the year, leading the researchers to conclude that “belief in climate change does not appear to be a necessary or sufficient condition for pro-environmental behavior.”

Hall and his colleagues can only speculate about the reasons for their results. But regarding the concerned but inactive, the psychological phenomenon known as moral licensing is a likely culprit.

That “moral licensing” certainly sounds like an inconvenient truth regarding the best known climate alarmist, former veep Al Gore. His mansion reportedly uses 21.3 times more kilowatt hours than the average US household — “including 66,159 kWh just to heat his swimming pool [for a year]

          1. BakedPenguin

Diego – both Tom Petty and Brittany Murphy have passed away, so no LuAnn or Lucky.

Cotton was a decent character, but they can come up with replacement characters.

Rhywun – I didn’t think so. It certainly wasn’t like seasons 12-16 of the Simpsons.

          2. Rhywun

            so no LuAnn

            OMG I didn’t know that.

          3. Tundra

In December 2009, Murphy died of pneumonia at the age of 32. When her widower Simon Monjack died from the same illness five months later, the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services considered toxic mold in their home as a possible cause for their deaths, but this was dismissed by the Coroner’s Office. In 2011, Murphy’s mother Sharon filed a lawsuit against the attorneys who represented her in an earlier suit against the builders of the home where her daughter and son-in-law died.

            The fuck?!?

          4. egould310

No “mold”. They died of drugs. Big deal. That’s how I’m going out.

          5. DiegoF

Fuck forgot about Tom Petty! How could I? One of my favorite artists ever, song for song; I must be in denial.

This actually makes it a bit neater. Lucky completed LuAnn’s arc (she was the Mr. Garrison of the show, the one with the personal journey in a show that was actually quite static overall); some people didn’t like him but he did his job. Now they can ride off into the sunset with their kid and the sole surviving Manger Baby. (You did kind of picture them living their lives out right next door though.)

          6. DiegoF

Very, very slightly. Some of the developments were actually interesting. TBH I don’t know if KOTH can come back. It kind of reached a “natural” end I felt, two awesome supporting characters cannot come back, etc. Also, though animation makes it very easy to get a cast back together, there isn’t a very good track record of it being good. (Futurama was not as good I hear. Beavis and Butthead, Judge’s true passion, did not work.) And Judge’s The Goode Family, his only other post-KOTH effort, I hear was quite subpar.

Also, I was skeptical beforehand about the Beavis and Butthead revival, because I just got the general feeling it was a creature of its time. And, somewhat more mildly, I fear the same of KOTH. I feel about it that is a product and satire of an America at a stage that has very much been lost, that it may not be the right vehicle to be to today’s America what the original series was to its own–that the KOTH of the late ’10s, insofar as there can be such a thing, cannot be KOTH itself. (The Muppets are another institution this may be true of.)

I think I am generally a lot more on the “let it go” side for many entertainment properties I love. Like I think we should probably not see a single piece of Star Trek ever again, if I had my way. No one thinks there should have been a Princess Bride 2, and that hardly takes away from the fact that in a certain way it left us desperate for more.

So those are my trepidations. I hope they’re groundless. In the meantime, fuck yeah I’ll be checking regularly to see if we get more KOTH!

          7. Rhywun

I thought the revived Futurama was pretty good – maybe not as classic but good enough to buy the box set 🙂

I would fear that a revived KOTH would be too political – esp. since they raised that exact point in the article. No thanks.

          8. BakedPenguin

The politics might be about the new left culture, especially since that’s the type of humor Judge loves.

          9. BakedPenguin

Futurama lost a lot. A new KOTH could be revitalized, or it could be crap. I didn’t mind Goode Family, but yeah, it wasn’t great.

It was funny the first time I took the older one there. The first thing you see when you walk in is a big plastic display, then an aisle of craft pop. Behind that is the first isle of candy. After we walked through the first aisle, he turned and asked if we were done. He was under the impression it was just a big store with a candy aisle. It took several minutes for him to grasp the idea that the entire store was candy, and that every aisle was a candy aisle. The first year we took the younger nephew, the elder one explained it to him several times to make sure he understood that the entire store was candy.

Ooh the new Karate Kid series is an official production, with original cast members! I’ll have to see it now! (Fun Fact: The Cobra Kai boys all became friends IRL, and have remained so to this day. Like real friends, who hang out with each other all the time.)

Karate Kid made Johnny such a nuanced, sympathetic villain, and–perhaps more questionably, from an artistic perspective–made sure to make Daniel-san so far away from the “sad-sack, pity-magnet bullying victim” to the “spunky, mouthy smartass little bullying victim with a tough badass little heart” side that he actually could seem objectively less sympathetic than Johnny. And this, as you may know, has led to a decades-long trope and pop-culture commentary institution about how Daniel was the real bully/villain, and Johnny the real hero. I just never thought it would actually go far enough to be a real, official property. This was too much to hope for! Might as well at this point though.

    1. DiegoF

…Then, of course, on top of all the reams of pro-Johnny commentary and videos from various sources, there was that music video, starring a still remarkably same-looking-after-all-these-years Johnny and Kreese, and the rest of the boys, in which poor Johnny (well, almost) gets the ending he deserves. It seemed so far away from the original that it almost couldn’t get any more distant, and yet here we are; it’s been ten years more.
