  • Sunday Morning Links: Father’s Day Edition

We’re on the sad part of our trip, the journey back from Heaven to Hell. At the moment, we’re stopped halfway, in Purgatory, otherwise known as North Dakota. The mountains behind us, the prairie ahead, and our faithful companion, Manfred The Mighty Wonder Dog, already anticipates being able to shit in her own yard again.

Enough of the personal, now to the important things for y’all to ignore. First, anniversaries and birthdays. On this day in 1963, the Supreme Court ruled 8-1 in Abington vs. Schempp that public school-run recitation of Christian prayers was unconstitutional. I remember this well: I was in third grade, my first year in public school, only Jew in the class, and resentful that we had to do this shit. My teacher made a point of telling us that anything we heard about this didn’t apply and that she would continue punishing anyone who didn’t enthusiastically participate. Which she did. This was one of the early steps in my development of total scorn and disgust with government indoctrination centers public schools. Today is also the birthday of Harry Browne, for whom I voted twice (in different elections, I wasn’t in Chicago then) and Jello Biafra.

Today’s news that struck my fancy:

I do not have much love for Rudy Giuliani, but every once in a while, I have to tip my hat in his direction.

Giuliani also said that he didn’t mean to call the former vice president a “mentally deficient idiot,” as he did in an interview with HuffPost, but then went on to attack Biden’s intelligence.

“I didn’t mean that, I meant that he’s dumb,” Giuliani told Cuomo when asked about his comments.

This is why we have such a high regard for the Washington Post, stories like this which really get into the nitty-gritty of an issue.

Such a situation could have long-term, devastating effects on young children, who are likely to develop what is called toxic stress in their brain once separated from caregivers or parents they trusted. It disrupts a child’s brain development and increases the levels of fight-or-flight hormones in their bodies, Kraft said. This kind of emotional trauma could eventually lead to health problems, such as heart disease and substance abuse disorders…

Nearly 4,600 mental-health professionals and 90 organizations have joined a petition urging Trump, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and several elected officials to stop the policy of separating children from their parents.

Huh, it’s really weird that no-one was covering this and circulating petitions three years ago. Huh. I wonder what was different. I guess the WaPo reporters were too busy then to get to this. Yeah, that must be it.

Will this be an excuse to step up even more military adventurism in Afghanistan? I mean, our war there is now becoming a national tradition, and we need to make sure that all of our generations to come can feel the same joy that we have had for the past 18 years. We don’t have Bush or Obama any more, can we count on Trump to follow his wise and brave predecessors in maintaining this glorious honor? I worry about this.

Never let it be said that we don’t find news that can transform your life.

Having grown up watching Brooks and Frank Robinson, Jim Palmer, Dave McNally, Eddie Murray, and Boog Powell, this shit is painful to me, but one of the comments absolutely cracked me up.

This is bullshit, man. Did the Sixers give up when it seemed impossible to set the NBA record for longest losing streak? No, they went out and set that record, and then they broke it the very next year. Did the Browns give up on the dream of an unvictoried season after going 1-15? No, they went out and achieved.

History is history! We may not all be destined for greatness, nor should we demand it. But what more can any man ask than to have his name etched in the annals of recorded humanity? To know when the great cities of today have crumbled, when the valleys have risen to become mountains and the mountains are but dust in the desert, that in some forgotten chamber in some dank corner of the Earth, still there rests a book of human history, and within its pages lies the humble name of the tragic man. “Worst Individual Season (by fWAR) In Baseball History: Chris Davis, 2018, -8.9.”

The headline alone of this story should tell you how absolutely worthless the UN is.

Old Guy Music! This was a wonderful and appropriate Jack Bruce number, here covered by (((Leslie West))) with Felix Pappalardi on vocals- Pappalardi had originally produced Jack Bruce’s version on Bruce’s superb album Songs For A Tailor, so this kinda brings it full circle. Mountain Climbing seems appropriate, though, for the week we’ve just spent, and yeah, it’s a good cover. I was amused that the comments on the video were all basically “Dad Song,” so they also fit the Father’s Day theme.

  • Swiss Servator’s Saturday Night Cryptid Free Links

    Vorsicht! Ein, zwei…BUWAAAA!!!!!!!!!

I am not sure what the SMITHS are up to…but I am sure it is no good. ZARDOZ might be off on a long grain hauling mission…or whatever the ZARDOZIAN equivalent to sitting around and recovering from a long week is. So, you get my links tonight. I’ll try to keep them short and to the point.

    • What has happened to Canadian politeness? Good to see noble and gallant PM Zoolander/TWINK IN THE NORTH hurrying to stand up for her. Feh. Oh and TW: Bloomberg, so most of the article is how this is all Trump’s fault.
    • More sterling personnel management from a Cook County governmental agency. When the Swiss are finally done with me, I am so leaving this state.
    • Hey, when you go bankrupt, you do whatever you can to raise cash.
    • Dang…looks like drugs have infiltrated another sport.

OK, there it is for ya. I guess ZARDOZ would tell you to go forth and kill comment. STEVE SMITH would throw a big rock at your head, or tell you to have a nice night, maybe?

So I’ll just let you go and do you.

  • Sense of Decency

Back in the day it was determined that certain things brought people together. When enough people in a small group unite for common cause, one might just call them a team. Under most circumstances, teams are a good thing, but what is it they are uniting under?

    A pin-up girl.

This is my review of Auburn Alehouse Pu240 Imperial IPA.

In 1944 the US Army Air Corps aircrew under Regulation 35-22, were allowed to decorate their aircraft with nose art, so long as they were done so with a “sense of decency.” This was done in contrast with the US Navy/Marines, who did not allow nose art at the time. The Air Corps allowed it because such images raised morale.

Nose art does not necessarily mean only pin-up girls. This is really a continuation of a tradition some believe date to the Greeks painting eyes on their Triemes. The German Luftwaffe was believed to be the first to paint the iconic shark mouth on Bf. 110. This lead to the Royal Air Force copying them, and finally the First American Volunteer Group—better known as the Flying Tigers. The US. Air Force to this day pays homage to these aviators with the A-10. Another example is aircrews using cartoon characters such as Donald Duck, to decorate their planes.

That said, we just remember the pin-up girls. Aircrews in the Pacific Theater took advantage of their lower public profile and often had art that pushed the bounds of the decency rule, such as Butterfly Baby but the most famous planes in that part of the world had no girls at all.  This in contrast with planes such as Memphis Belle from the Mighty 8th AF in England were a bit more understated.  So…here you go.

    [Insert Tail Gunner Joke Here]

Thankfully, Auburn makes an IPA that lives up to their artwork. If you are a fan of this style, or you are the type that like to drink exactly one beer over the course of hours, this one is a good call. Good body, pungent hop aroma and a healthy abv. Auburn Alehouse Pu240 Imperial IPA: 3.8/5.

  • Saturday Morning Remote Links

We met the nicest bunch of guys out here in the rural Rocky Mountains. They put on uniforms, drill, do target practice, learn hand-to-hand combat, run around the hills, chase Jews… it’s fun. No, I didn’t tell them, because they did seem awful nice and I didn’t want to spoil their fun.

Anyway, that’s a fitting way to segue into the news today. Although I should mention that it’s Stan Laurel’s birthday. The Music Box is still one of the funniest bits of film ever made.

Some would call this tragedy. Some would call this callousness. Some would call this overblown. I would call it “opportunity.”

Well, if your fame is fading and your cause is brainless, may as well get a more appropriate spokeswoman.

Speaking of which, I really am losing hope for the new generation.

STILL more useful than their purported assignment.

Florida Man, you never, ever disappoint. And bless the Second Amendment.

    NO. JUST…. NO.

Old Guy Music! Not much to say here beyond that this is the guy who basically invented modern electric guitar playing. And the fucker cooks.

  • Friday Afternoon Blow Off Work Links

So lets see, Iran was gifted a win when their opponent OG’d 4.5 minutes into a 6 minute stoppage. I hope they don’t murder for that in Morocco. Somehow Portugal ended up with a PK 3 minutes in. I assume I looked down for a minute and missed a classic Christiano Ronaldo dive. Spain of course, gets a PK waved off in a blatant handball in the box. Inadvertant or not, his hand was at shoulder level and deflected a ball bound for the goal. Spain is the far better team. If Ronaldo wasn’t so great, this wouldn’t be a game. And there’s the unfuckingbelievable tie goal. Spain got robbed by the greatest player ever

Jesus, Florida Man, you can’t have roller coasters derailing and hurting people. The Mouse’s people will take you out into a swamp and feed you to the gators.

Wait, wait, a Cabinet Secretary had is people put in a call for his daughter to help her get a White House internship? If anything it proves that its so NOT a big deal that Pruitt didn’t feel like he had to talk to The Man or the Chief of Staff about it.

I have a feeling that this sort of thing sticks with a Marine for the rest of his career, even if he fully recovers medically. Still, its not like accidentally shooting a general officer in the chest at point blank range like happened to Petraeus.

WaPo staffers pen open letter to owner, complaining his management aren’t bargaining in good faith. Expect the silence in response to be its own statement. Alternatively, look for Amazon to go big in newswriting AI.

If the order of the day is European Soccer, then the song must be from a movie that featured a brutal English footballer as the leader of a hooligan club.

  • GlibFit 2.0, Son of Glibfit – Week 5

Week 5 – Finding Truth in a Sea of Lies

There is a lot of good information about health and fitness out there.  There is an order of magnitude more bullshit out there. Set aside the bad actors like Men’s Health actively peddling lies for money (current headline: Can Eating for your Bloodtype Help You Lose Weight?  No, and there is no evidence this works, and everyone knows it.) The real problem are the evangelicals.  No wait, not that link.  Those guys were awesome.  These ones.

Lots of people struggle with their health goals.  They either don’t put the effort in, they don’t have a good plan of attack, or they have a good plan of attack that happens to not work for them.  They try it, and it fail. Repeat this over, and over and over, and “nothing works.” Then, after years or decades of trying, bam. Something works.  Maybe they actually put the effort in for the first time (that’s me, this time.) Maybe they get on a good plan (ok, that’s me too.) Maybe the plan is just a good fit for their preferences and habits (yep, me here again.)

And this leads to the error in logic.  You’ve tried everything, and everything failed.  Then you found this one thing, and it works. And being a social creature, you want to tell the world.   This doesn’t make you a bad person – just the opposite! You “know” the one thing that works, and if people would just try it, they can skip over all the pain and disappointment you had.

Just.  Do. This.  One. Thing.  Paleo. Veganism.  Keto. Whole Food Plant Based (we just called that vegetarianism in my day.)  Lift Heavy. No, Lift for Hypertrophy. Pilates. Yoga. Crossfit. Whatever.

I’m just going to say it: Muscular Christianity was weird.

You know what that makes most people?  Evangelicals. Lots of these even have the strong odor of moralism.

This is how your body is supposed to work. Eating dolphins is a sin.  Real men lift heavy. Real men Eka Pada Rajakapotasana until they can smell their own taint.

They have one data point, and they want everyone to know it and love it like they do.  They are not good sources of information. But good information is necessary for my throw-everything-against-the-wall-and-see-what-sticks method of fitness improvement.  After all, my goal is to work smarter, not harder.

So what would a good data source look like?  Well, N would need to be a lot bigger than 1.  So we need lots of people. And some personal anecdotes are important, but so is access to larger statistical data.  Group think is always a danger, so we’d need a conflict resolution mechanism that rewards good ideas not conformity to ideology.  That mean… oh crap. I know what that means.

See, there is this engine that someone built.  Its fuel is the autistic rage of over-educated social idiots, and it spits out hate.  It’s a weaponized hive of scum and neckbeardery. But it has all those features we are looking for.

    Never read the comments

That’s right, my trusted data source is (Lovecraft help me), Reddit.

See, Reddit has this social dynamic where, to win a fight, you have to ascend the scale of reliability to appeal to the notions of the overeducated idiots of Reddit.  The weakest form of argument is the anecdote. A better argument is the appeal to group wisdom. Then low-quality internet article, then high-quality internet article.  And the winning argument on Reddit is a link to a journal article that you haven’t read.

So yeah.  Reddit. If a mathematician is a machine for turning coffee into theorems, Reddit is a machine for turning antisocial behavior into reasonable fitness advice.

I should take a step back and say that there are two kinds of Reddit communities.  This is my own taxonomy, but I say there are two kinds. First are the process based.  These are all about how to get fit and healthy. /r/keto, /r/veganism, /r/HIIT, /r/weightroom.  Then there are the outcome based communities. /r/fitness, /r/loseit, /r/gaint. The first are a breeding ground for evangelicals.  The second aren’t invested in a way to get there, just get there. Get fit. Lose weight. Bulk up.

It’s in those places that I look for information.  And you know what… it’s scary how good that information is.  Probably not quite as good as a specialist medical profesional like a physical therapist or a bariatric nurse, but better than a general practitioner.  At least in my experience.

I’ll prove it.  Using Reddit’s favored resolution mechanism.  Factors Associated With Weight Change in Online Weight Management Communities: A Case Study in the LoseIt Reddit Community.  They studied activity in /r/loseit, one of those outcome based communities.  They found “Our findings suggest that among active users of a weight management community, self-declaration of higher BMI levels (which may represent greater dissatisfaction with excess weight), high online activity, and engagement in discussions that might provide social support are associated with greater weight loss.”

/r/gainit, /r/loseit, and /r/fitness are three subreddits to get to know, if you are looking for diet and fitness information.  All three have high-quality content in their wikis, and generally you can get a good answer to a question if you post it.

Of course, all things in moderation.  Reddit makes you stupid

    Bonus 1 week challenge:

Go read about how veganism doesn’t make you live longer.  Found this link on Reddit.

  • Friday Morning Links

Russia pounded Saudi Arabia’s nuts in the World Cup opener.  Mo Salah (Egyptian king)  will be on the bench against Uruguay today. And “The Battle For Iberia” is this afternoon.  I just thought of that, so if you think its retarded, you know who to point a finger at.  And Kellen Winslow II, one of the biggest assholes in all of professional sports over the last few decades, is in a bit more legal trouble than everyone thought when he was first arrested last week.

On the diamonds, your winners were: San Francisco, Philly, Detroit, Cleveland (who managed to split a series with White Sox), the World Champion Houston Astros, Yankees, Braves, Diamondbacks and Red Sox.

And then…there was the bloodbath at Shinnecock Hills.  There probably hadn’t been that much carnage on Long Island since the white man first set foot on the continent.  It was just brutal.  The average score was more than 6 over par. Just four players in red numbers after the first round, and I would imagine that number won’t get any bigger as we get to the weekend.  I partially blame the conditions, which were tricky to say the least.  But when you crosscut the greens, dry them out as much as possible, and put pins in unapproachable locations, are you really bringing out the best in these players?  I would tend to say they should leave everything else alone but at least make the greens comparable to what tour players face on a regular basis.  You simply cannot put pins on the side of a ridge on a rear-sloping green with the entire back fringe bikini-waxed.  It makes for shitty golf, in my opinion.  Look for DJ to carry on and go into the weekend either in the lead or right there in contention.  God knows what else will happen, other than a bunch of guys in the 80s and fans grumbling (some) over the weekend that a lot of big names are spending Fathers Day weekend at home.

    Dumbass

Sorry for the rant. Hey look, composer Edvard Greig was born on this date.  Am an whose work I quite enjoy.  So were commie Yuri Andropov, jazz pianist Erroll Garner, asshole Mario Cuomo, musical genius Waylon Jennings, whore/author Xaviera Hollander, “the lizard” Dusty Baker, another commie Xi Jinping, the brother of a great comedian Jim Belushi, fried chicken and beer aficionado Wade Boggs, “actress” Helen Hunt, “actress” Courtney Cox, actor and musician O’Shea Jackson, Starship Trooper Niel Patrick Harris, three-time world champ and San Francisco Giant Tim “The Freak” Lincecum, and also the aforementioned Egyptian King, Mo Salah is celebrating.

Its also a great day in the history of the individual. Its the day the Magna Carta was signed by King John.  I’ve seen an original of the document in Washington at the National Archives.  It was a really cool experience. George Washington was appointed commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. Charles Goodyear patented the vulcanization of rubber, Henry Flipper (in 1877) became the first black man to graduate from West Point, mustache-genius Wilhelm II became Emperor of Germany, Ford Motor Company built its 10 millionth vehicle, scumbag and cross-dresser J Edgar Hoover assumed leadership of the FBI, “The Dirty Dozen” hit theaters, and Jack Nicklaus, the winner of the most majors of all time and most likely the greatest golfer ever, won the 80th US Open.

I hope you got all that.  Especially the golf stuff.  Now we come to…the links!

    Dumbass

I’ve got nothing on the IG report.  Everybody saw it, everybody has an opinion on it. I’d be mailing it in if I used that as a link when I know it’ll be topic of the day anyhow. So consider this my bringing it up, and feel free to go crazy on it in the comments.

Oh no! This is definitely going to break our economy. Whatever will we do? I mean, if this doesn’t end soon, I can only imagine the streets in South Florida and Arizonas will be almost devoid of Cadillacs and Buicks floating across three lanes to get to the 4:30 PM dinner special in the fall.  And teenage boys won’t have a fictitious girlfriend to talk about when they get back from summer vacation.  And … well, that’s pretty much it.

Bipartisan push for shield laws for journalists is back on.  OK, great.  But mentioning an opportunist partisan hack sleeping her way through sources in order to spin bullshit might not be as good a poster child as, say, Edward Snowden and Wikileaks, who do nothing put post the raw data and let people decide for themselves how to take it.  Also, I’ll pose a question: should we grant protected status to the sources who are breaking federal confidentiality laws or should we merely allow the stories to be printed and not punish the journalists?  She’s not being punished. And the defense of the feds here, in my opinion, is that they subpoena’d the records of their target’s lover, not his journalistic outlet. What say you?

    Dumbass

If you expected this to have happened somewhere other than Florida, you’re not paying attention. I applaud his desire to enforce his contract. But his methods are suspect.

I see the left is flipping the fuck out that the Trump admin plans on enforcing our naturalization policy and possibly removing violent criminals from the country. Yeah, good luck selling that one.

Only in Chicago.  I mean, the corruption in that city just can’t be topped.  Maybe, just maybe, all the Chicago Glibs need to move out and we need to drop a nuke on that cesspool of government corruption.  Maybe.

    Dumbass

And the latest Darwin Award winners are…these dumbasses.

If you’re at work, you may want to not play this song on full volume. For the birthday boy.

Have a great day and a wonderful Fathers Day weekend.  I know I will.

  • Thursday Afternoon Links

I was bemoaning, today, the passing of basic networking from the skillset of certain software types. At what point did not knowing the difference between a local network IP and your public facing IP become a lost art? It worries me that someone who basically admitted to not being able to configure his own home network beyond (possibly) plugging the router into the modem has a technical job my work may depend on. Which is not to say that I know all about networking. But for me that’s the equivalent of knowing how to pop the hood on your car. For those of you who want to acquire this skill — here is a link. Bookmark it and seem smarter to your IT sysadmin. for bonus credit, if your IP address is in one of these ranges — that is your LOCAL address and you may need to follow the link.

    Here endeth the lesson.

Sports Update: Russia is now a tie away from advancing after thumping the Saudis 5-0. Hard to image how they don’t go through if they tie Egypt or Uruguay. I’m assuming Saudi Arabia gets to cheat on their OPEC targets for the rest of the year in return.

If I had to recommend just one article from today to a friend about why I’m a libertarian, I would pick this one.

In their battle to destroy adolescent behavior, they would make us all children. “Mo-ooom! He won’t stop looking at me!”

The IG in the FBI’s handling of the Clinton email server probe gave their sternest judgement. “Procedures were not followed, but no political intent”. Amazingly, they found, no contact was recorded between DOJ head Loretta Lynch and FBI head Comey ahead of two important press conference. Why, its almost like she didn’t need to be briefed because the fix was in.

I’m sure this ricin recovered from the apartment of a Tunisian national in Germany was part of his dedication to bring back the Red Army Faction, right?

I’m really looking forward to the NYT and WaPo “rednecks in the mist” article about the new gay mayor of Del Rio, TX. Sorry, bud. You’re never going to convince me that a man can wear heels under a suit unless they’re connected to a pair of boots, but I wish him great success.

    I guess I’m in a Lucero mood.
