Just you watch where you fry eggs in Ukraine! Not just anywhere, says the European Court of Human Rights!
The bad soap opera that is the Bronx District Attorney’s Office might actually be getting worse. Or, rather, we are just finding out how bad it truly is…somehow this isn’t the “ripped from the headlines” stuff you see on police procedurals like the various Law & Order franchises.
Speaking of cluster&*$% law enforcement. Not surprising, really.
Huh. Global Warming, Climate Change, Climate Chaos or whatever they are calling it these days was supposed to have made snow a thing of the past in the UK, right?
Monday…not a big fan here. But the daily workout is over, the coffee is now at hand…no sluggish start to the workweek is going to stop the links from going out to our readers, dammit!!! Sports – the Olympics are over, and THANK GOD. I can NOT be subjected to hours of figure skating on the living room big screen. Well, at least for a few years now. Get yerselves ready for March Madness – I am unsure if we are going to have a Glibs Bracket Challenge…I will speak to the fellow cabal…er, site admins.
Right. Now, links:
A boom in England. Not the good kind. Information has been slow to get out – but in a situation like that, my first thought is “gas leak”. Rergardless, I hope nobody else is trapped in there.
I had to check the date on this story. It seems to be a recurring theme for the UN. At this point, I am wondering why anyone would take the blue helmets in – I guess sheer desperation. They stood aside and watched Rwanada, Bosnia, etc. They actively screwed up Haiti and have been too rapey all over the place.
Hey, look what a real authoritarian state looks like. If that happened here, we wouldn’t have jail cells enough for everyone who insulted the orange tinted Hat n’ Hair carrier. Wait…I didn’t mean that..HEY WATCH IT! Those cuffs hurt! Where are you taking me?!?!?!
OK, since I am subbing in for sloopy, a real music link – no Rickroll.
OK, time to have another themed links…but not in subject matter. Nope, we are going to go to a single type of source….the Tabloids! Roll around in the trashy headlines, the insinuation and innuendo! Rejoice in the lack of weight and seriousness. I give you, the all-tabloid links!
We’ll start out with a typical British tabloid reaction to a motor accident – or, a “Hands Free Horror Smash” as the Sun calls it.
Back to Britain, for everybody’s favorite….the Daily Fail Mail. “LOCKED IN WITH LIONS“. Kudos for incorporating the video bit too. I just love the oddly specific reference to the car brand in the header. And God Bless for adding the pics, so we know it was two attractive women IN DANGER!!!!!!!!!!! Never change, Daily Fail!
I would be guilty of the most egregious malpractice if I didn’t include America’s favorite (no, not The Weekly World News) …The National Enquirer! I found a lovely little sports related conspiracy story…For The Win! This is absolutely delightful in the “journalism” aspect of the “investigation”.
OK, one more, I cannot resist, just as an homage to the World’s Only Reliable News…6-INCH ALIEN!
Just TRY and beat that one!
I just KNOW you have favorite tabloid headlines you can share, yes?
Last we saw, Catalonia had what I suspected would happen – a muddled, slightly pro-independence election result.
How do you say “Big Freakin’ mess” in Catalan?
So, what has been happening?
Well, near and dear to me – Switzerland has been dragged into the mess. One of the separatists from the Left, Anna Gabriel, logically skipped showing up to the Spanish Supreme Court to answer charges of being naughty and not wanting to be part of Spain. After wisely choosing to flee to Switzerland (look what happens when you stick around) she has indicated she will stay there. One of the more theatrical elements of this action by the Spanish Government…no extradition request was attached to their arrest warrant (Switzerland has mentioned they would probably not extradite anyways). And to remind you all how awesome Switzerland is….they have previously offered to mediate between Madrid and the separatists. OK,OK, that is enough Swiss strokin’.
What about me?!
Carles Puigdemont, once (and future?) President of Catalonia’s regional government, is squawking from his exile in Belgium, that he should be running the show – but any kind of law to allow him to do so hasn’t been moved forward. So we are left with a dozen political leaders in exile or jail and Madrid issuing symbolic arrest warrants. Oh, and Madrid not being content with things being muddled, but peaceful, has decided to stick a big middle finger up to the Catalans, regarding one of the sorest points out there.
In my opinion, Madrid is caught on the horns of a dilemma – do they try to keep a sort of soft squashing of independence going (the arrest warrants – but no extradition requests, hovering around and waving Article 155 – direct rule by Madrid – of the constitution, and diplomatically pressuring other nations to not recognize Catalan independence) or do they clench a fist and swing – disbanding the regional government again, pushing Spanish language and national feeling, and actively trying to round up leaders of the independence movement.
At least it is still jaw-jaw (mostly, pay no mind to the jailed and exiled) and not war-war. But sooner or later, one side is going to fish or cut bait. Right now, I’d say it is likely Madrid will be the first to push hard. We will see, one way or the other.
This morning I can think of no better theme for the Links than the source of wisdom, moral exemplars and inspiration that is Hollywood. Bask in the glory. Take to heart the lessons. KNEEL BEFORE ZOD…uh…scratch that last one. Anyhoo, here is Hollywood for ya:
Should you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of a divorce….who other than Ashton Kutcher could you look to for an example of how to manage the whole thing?
I realize that many of you are in business, and in supervisory roles. Learn how to deal with your subordinates from yet another sterling example!
We should be grateful that Hollywood brings us into contact with down to Earth, real people, you know – ones that can inspire us all to greatness.
And if there is one more thing we can get from Hollywood, lately, it is originality!
Now, you must excuse me as I go bow, reverently, toward the Hollywood sign.
Of craps, I give none today. But I don’t want to end up hauled in by rampaging Red, er…Links Guards, so you get links.
“He failed to post the Links!”
I wonder how many Glibs bid on one of these? NOTE: this is NOT something Sloopy auctions, so don’t even start making that joke. In case any of you do, I’ll just do this now… *narrows gaze*
NIMBYs and Slavers try to thwart useful apps. If I was in a crap giving mood, I’d make some sort of ROADZ! joke. I’ll leave that for all of you.
Death Panels? Rubbish made up by people standing against progress!
I am bored. Today, I am filled with boredom. And I care not enough to do anything about it. But I suppose it would be expected to have Afternoon Links. So I have managed to convince Brett to go cook meth or catch pythons, fight gators or drive a fanboat….whatever catches a Florida Man’s fancy this afternoon. I will try to shake the ennui by doing Links.
Oh look, a Euro politician yapping for more American money to be given to others. *Yawn* Boring…
Speaking of boring…this fellow and politics fit the bill.
Oh look, another charity/celebrity/whatever sex scandal.
How unique… a gator walking around someplace in Florida, of all places. *snores*
Not really a link – which Glib said the following – “Daytime TV is like having a fine mist of hooker diarrhea sprayed in your eyes.” You all should be able to get this in one.
…
It didn’t work
*wanders off, aimlessly*
*Stirs, comes back briefly*
IT WAS SUGARFREE. (I will forgive the HM guess…this time)
I am going to keep it brief – with Florida Man, ZARDOZ and STEVE SMITH roaming the pages….best to keep a low profile. But there are a few things worth linking, so here they are for you:
OK…OKAY!? Which one of you talked?! CAN WE NOT TRUST YOU PEOPLE WITH A FEW SECRETS???! Bah. Damage control time.
A year ago this site burst forth, like Athena, fully armed, from the brow of Zeus!
Behold, Glibertarians.com!
OK, maybe not that dramatic. Or that cool. Or… enough of that. Anyways, here we are at one year. If you look at what we saidwe are all about, I think we have stayed true. We have had many join, a few leave and a couple kicked out…but it has been an interesting time – most of it because of you, the Glibertariat. We have had terrific content (largely contributed by all of you) more snark than a Borscht Belt comedian reunion and a place we can call our internet home. I think the biggest thanks of mine would go to SP, for making this more than a cruddy, free “blogspot.com” site and to sloopy for being the driving force for the site even being done in the first place.
So those are my thoughts – I will hand this off to my fellow Glibs for theirs.
Brett L
I’m grateful to have a place I can come and be wrong. I’ve learned a lot about interesting stuff I didn’t even know was out there this year. This feels like the internet version of my big Irish family. Inside, we fight and drink and cut up at each other, outside, we mob up and kick the shit out of anyone who messes with us. Wait. Not that last part. I’d like to echo Swiss. SP has done a bang up job with this site. Sloopy was so hardcore about this site, he paid a cop to beat up his mom. Hopefully, we won’t need any more of that in year two. Special shout out to Riven and SugarFree, who carry the brunt of the load on user-submitted pieces. And thanks to Swiss, SP, OMWC, and SF for picking up the afternoon link slack. Finally, next time SP does afternoon links, you all better tell her what a great job she’s doing or I’m doing an all Goatse and Eagles (the band) links.
Gojira
I only wish I had cat-butted more people. I think I only did it once. Oh well, there’s always this coming year.
JW
Who are all you weirdos? Huge kudos to the gang of malcontents who keep this place running and humming and give us a place to belong, even if I don’t really have time to participate much these days.
SP
Happy Anniversary to all you degenerate mockers and scoffers, now free from the tyranny of TOS! I’m proud to be a contributing freedom fighter.

I am so happy to be a part of the two close-knit communities Glibs plays a part of. First to the people who put this project together and were gracious enough to include me in their plans: thanks to all of you. You are a wonderful group of friends and I am blessed that you let me contribute here. Second, to the larger group of readers, contributors, lurkers and benefactors: thanks you all for turning this into the most enjoyable virtual part of my life to date. Many of you are what I would consider friends and the rest of you I consider close acquaintances that have added immeasurably to my knowledge, have made me laugh to the point of tears and have made me rethink positions to better respect the individual rights of others.
You guys people are, to a man person, the best. And looking forward, I’m drawn to the words of Dirk Diggler:
Wow. I dunno what to say . . . I guess. Wow. I guess the only thing I can say, is that I promise to keep rocking and rolling and to keep making better films posts. It seems we make these movies this blog . . . and sometimes . . . they’re it’s considered filthy or something by some people . . . but I don’t think that’s true. These films This blog we make can be better . . . they it can help . . . they it really can, I mean it. We can always do better — and I’ll keep trying if you keep trying so let’s keep ROCKING AND ROLLING.
Old Man With Candy
Reason did me a great favor- it allowed me to meet and become real-life friends with an amazing group of people. Funny thing was, I could never get SP to read it, and on the few occasions she looked, she didn’t find the comments appealing. The first turning point was a few years ago when she joined me on a trip to visit SugarFree; “You keep telling me that his stuff is disturbing and horrifying- I can’t believe that, he’s such a sweet, charming, and intelligent guy!” That sort of hooked her into my libertarian social circle and she did not come back unscathed. So when it seemed obvious to our friends that it was time to make Virginia Postrel’s fondest wish come true, she was the one who really made it happen.
I’m shocked and very pleasantly surprised at how fast we became a community in the Burkean “little platoon” sense. Crowd-sourcing content is a recipe for disaster, unless your crowd is unusually smart and articulate. And the Glibertariat is definitely Mensa-gone-terribly-wrong. In any case, having this site has allowed SP and me to meet lots of you whom we wouldn’t have met otherwise, and we’ve ended up with people who are truly friends. That is priceless and makes all the work involved pale into insignificance.
Thank you. Thank you all.
SugarFree
This is all I have to say:
I will not be taking any questions.
WebDominatrix
I am oddly pleased to be a member of this community! It’s nice to know there are people out there as messed up as I am! (And I say that with love!)
Note the utter lack of help from their US komeraden? Oh wait, I forgot that they moved mountains here –
His asylum denial has provoked outrage among many U.S. journalists and migrant advocates, who have organized protests outside the detention center where he and his son are being held.
Couldn’t accredit them and have them come in on a work visa at a US bureau, eh? Get Carlos Slim to cough up a few bucks to help? Protest outside Mexican Embassy? Send lawyers, guns and money? What is Europe or Canada or anyone else doing as far as asylum?
There has been a smattering of coverage, mostly last year, when a couple of high profile murders were in the news. But I don’t see much of an effort to do anything other than cluck. I guess it is just too hard to do anything or consistently bring this story to light, when you are too busy covering Cheeto Mussolini’s latest Tweet.
