  • Thursday Afternoon Glib Monarchy Links

People often say to me, “SP, you are the queen of my heart.”

Well, what’s the percentage in that?!

You have no doubt noticed that with the run-up to this weekend’s Royal wedding, my family, although not inbred, has been doing its best to emulate the British Royal Family these past 36 hours:

    1. We have purely ceremonial powers
    2. We expect to be idolized and feted simply for being born
    3. We meddle and make pronouncements about all manner of things
    4. Webdominatrix and I rock tiaras
    5. We’re a Royal PITA and you can’t get rid of us

However, in yet another gracious act of Queenly benevolence, I will bestow upon my loyal subjects…the links.

    Way to smash the patriarchy!

And this just in. More women smashing patriarchies and glass ceilings…or lungs, kneecaps, whatever.

Suuuurrrrre, it’s healthier to quit smoking cigarettes. Older story but amused me.

    Hey, I can’t prove it wasn’t.

    Who?

    Answer: SugarFree stories.

Well, I wasn’t going there anyway.

    Never apologize. And… Laurel.

Have a terrific rest of your day, Glibs. And don’t forget to bow down before me!

  • Household Chores

    I know, I know.

You all have orphans to do all your mundane or nasty tasks. But sometimes orphans get sick. And nobody has an inexhaustible supply, even Glibs.

So, air your dirty laundry. What household chore(s) do you loathe doing? And I realize this will be a mostly first-world-problem kind of list. Still.

I’ll start. I absolutely detest unloading the dishwasher. I don’t mind loading it, or even washing dishes or pots and pans by hand. But I will procrastinate on unloading that blasted machine as long as I possibly can.

Oh, and I hate folding laundry and putting it away.

But maybe you’re a glass half full kind of person. What household chore(s) do you love doing?

I love gardening for edibles. No, silly, like vegetables, fruits, and herbs.

    And…well.

    OK, maybe that’s it.

    How about you?

    A Midweek Reflection

Here at Glib HQ, we tend to spend most of our time being, well, glib.

A bit more than a year ago the Founders expressed a wistful, “Wouldn’t it be great to have our own place?”

I, not having the good sense I was born with, said, “Oh, it’s not hard to put a site together.”

    And that’s true.

What is difficult to build is a real community. And thanks to all of you, this has surpassed my wildest expectations. Especially since I had none.

I thought I’d throw a site together, hand it over to the Founders, and go on my way. However, this site has become a place we can all come to express our various levels of exasperation with the state of the world, propose our solutions, snark, laugh, cry when we need to, share our knowledge, get support, offer help, spread our joy, ask for advice, inspire each other, ponder the larger issues, have good faith discussions, and simply feel a bit more linked.

I often say that my new life strategy is to learn not to care about people I know, so I don’t care what happens to them. It isn’t working out so well.

Because, darnit, I am grateful for all the connections I have made among the Founders and the Glibertariat, both online and off. I have been privileged to spend some truly wonderful hours with fellow Glibs.

I’ve also learned quite a bit about quite a lot, and some of it doesn’t even require brain bleach.

So, whether you contribute comments, create content, submit recipes, donate hard-earned cash, or send off-site correspondence, I just want to say thank you.

Today’s music is from one of our favorite world-class musicians who happens to live in Milwaukee, Willy Porter. We typically see Willy in tiny venues with 50 people in the audience, often from seats about 5 feet away from him. So much fun up close and personal. (And, he’s a total sweetie, on top of it.)

She ain’t afraid of no Glibs.

Good morning, my Glib friends. And the rest of you, too.

First, let me address a nasty rumor you may have heard floating around the Tubes. Sloopy has NOT, I repeat NOT, abdicated. He told me he was going out for a pack of smokes and he’d be right back.

Now that I’ve cleared that up….

It was a beautiful weekend here at Chez SP/OMWC, except for the #CincoDeDrinko attempt on OMWC’s life by a certain Señor Sharpshooter.

Truthfully, I don’t think it was Mexican’s largesse that almost did in OMWC, but, rather, the fact that he is actually, truly OLD and yet insists on mowing the acreage with a push lawnmower as if he were a teenager. If only the Glib I know with a landscaping business were closer, I’d get OMWC off his own damn lawn.

Oh, right, sports. Sadly, OMWC is not having a good time this MLB season. My beloved Cubbies are currently 4th in the NL Central, but they are still doing better than the Orioles.

Our hometown-ish independent league baseball team, the Boomers, plays an exhibition game tonight at home against the Joliet Slammers (what a great name). We have a great love of minor and independent league baseball. There is just something charming about the small stadiums, enthusiasm of the players (who are usually making about $500/month), and camaraderie of the fans. And, hey, gotta love the prices! We’ll be there for a few games this season, hopefully joined by Swiss.

In Albuquerque, the 33rd Annual Run for the Zoo took place. At least one Glib lurker was among the 12,000 participants. Here are the race results. When I lived in New Mexico, the BioPark was one of my favorite places to go.

In other sports, some other stuff happened, but, eh.

Scary stuff intensifying with Kilauea, the volcano currently causing problems in Hawaii. I hope any Glibs close to the situation are safe and sound, and their properties, too. TW: autoplay; WaPo

While I was staffing the Editorial Desk, Chafed sent in this gem. I guess someone whose doctoral dissertation was titled, “The Other Side: the Secret Relationship Between Nazism and Zionism” might, in fact, be harboring some antisemitic ideas. Yes, that’s H/T Chafed.

This is my philosophy, as well.

You know public employees in the great state of California are really suffering, and this planned strike shakedown is going to fix everything. “The union cites growing income disparity, higher healthcare premiums, outsourcing of low-paying service worker jobs and an internal union research document that they say proves that women and minorities at the university are regularly paid less than white men.” (If it’s an internal union document, it must be true and unbiased!)

Ready to book your summer vacation travel? I’ll get the sign-up ready for the Glib Tour.

    And, speaking of coffee.

OK, I’m outta here. Hope all of your day is fun, kids!

  • Wednesday Morning Where Did Everybody Go Links

Seems like it’s just me here. Where is everybody?!

Sloopy, BrettL, OMWC, Swiss, and SugarFree (my favorite)…gone. All gone. I hope the Glibertariat is not also…gone. Or I got up early to do links for humans who are gone.

Hey, speaking of humans, on this day in history —

2003: Human Genome Project completion announced.

Which was really all put in motion on this day in

1953: when A Structure for Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid was published.

1917: Ella Fitzgerald arrived to grace us all. Greatest female vocalist ever. Don’t argue; you know I’m right.

    In more recent events

Thank goodness Chicago is a gun-free sanctuary, but the shooters using the guns-that-don’t-exist here need way more range time. Side note: must really suck to work in the ER at Mt Sinai Hospital.

Is anyone really surprised by this result in Arizona?

Bad news for some among the Glibertariat.

Who the heck is attacking Rand Paul now?

HM might need to dig out his checkbook for this. (Probably SFW)

H/T to PudPaisley for bringing a singer/songwriter to my attention. Just in time for an album release show at one of our favorite venues in Milwaukee next week. I really like Wisconsinite Pat Ferguson’s style. We might hit the show if OMWC can stay awake past his typical OM bedtime.

Have a super great day, kids! Try extra hard to be nice to all the stupid people you meet. They probably can’t help it.

  • What’s Your Number?

So last night we had dinner guests. Heroic Mulatto and Swiss joined OMWC, Webdominatrix, and me in a falafel fest. Conversation was fueled by the excellent Woodford Reserve bourbon sent along by SugarFree. We also opened a bottle of the Recas recommended to us by Pie in the Sky. Swiss brought along some La Trappe Witte Trappist, in which I did not indulge, not being fond of beer. (Don’t worry, I made up for it in bourbon intake.)

After dinner, we started talking about personality tests. True, many of them are outright BS. However, I’m a fan of the Enneagram. (YMMV)

The Enneagram divides everyone into one of nine interconnected types. Over the years I’ve found that it can be a helpful tool to attain a little insight into my worldview and that of others. I am very typical of people who fall into my personality style number. OMWC is very much what one would expect based on his number. So are my kids.

Curious? Go ahead and take a test.

A very accessible basic book is The Enneagram Made Easy. I usually have a couple copies because I frequently give it away after a discussion such as last evening’s.

The party broke up rather early as it was a school night. And one of the guests did indeed leave with a book.

Thanks for coming over, HM and Swiss! I am feeling very lucky that I know such interesting and delightful people.

  • GlibFit! Challenge 1, Week 6

How did you do with your goals this week?

On the plus side, I have somehow managed to stay mostly plant-based while in Del Boca Vista, through the simple method of insisting Webdom or I cook every meal. Unlike her son, my MIL is completely not fussy and will eat anything put in front of her, unless it’s too spicy. (Hmm…I wonder if she’s also UCS’s (((Mom))).) So it’s working out OK.

On the negative side, I’ve consumed vast quantities of wine. Like, you know, a metric fuckton of bottles of wine. OMWC’s Mom has some memory issues, which is to be expected if one is old enough to be the parent of an Old Man. Happily, she is a very sweet lady whom I love, so, while also challenging, it’s mostly sad. But sad enough that I need Coping Wine. Even Webdom, who is not a notable drinker, is imbibing nightly.

How did you do? Wait, what? I’m the only one still doing this??????

  • Greetings from Del Boca Vista!

Random thoughts from the Sunshine State.

March in Del Boca Vista is…bland. It’s just…pleasant. It’s not horrible, it’s not great. It’s just unremarkable.

Day after day, the same weather, the same activities, the same people. Which, according to OMWC’s (((Mom))), is just the way they like it. (The only mystery around here is how such a lovely lady could have spawned OMWC.)

OK, Webdominatrix is enjoying the lack of snow. I am enjoying the lack of Chicagoland traffuck.

Whenever I come to DBV, I am struck by the fact that nearly everyone I see is an oldster. The grocery stores are filled with elderly people in motorized carts blocking the aisles. The parking lots are filled with giant cars with NY Giants bumper stickers. The restaurants are filled with senior citizens enjoying the ubiquitous Early Bird Discounts. The swimming pools are filled with…well, I’ll let your imagination be your guide there. Let’s just say, tattoos are generally not attractive on 85 year old bodies.

There is nothing wrong with free association, but it pulls me up short when I realize I’ve gone days without seeing anyone under 70 who isn’t a server or health care aide.

Much as I love my MIL, I’ll be happy to get back to the nonstop excitement of living with OMWC.
