  • Coming Attractions & Saturday Night Open Post

Know what I hate? Headaches. (I rarely get them.) I thought it was sinus plaguing me all day long, but I’m now leaning more toward migraine because it Just.Will.Not.Go. and darkness helps. Oy vey!

Anyway, here’s your weekly sneak peak.

You’ll be receiving Daily Links posts from Sloopy, Brett L, OMWC…and possibly others like ZARDOZ, STEVE SMITH, SEA SMITH, and assorted Founders, depending on everyone’s work lives. You’ll also be able to plan your week based on Not Adahn’s star charts, work toward your GlibFit goals with trshmnstr and Mrs trshmnstr, plan some meals with A Leap at the Wheel and Web Dom–and some drinking with mexican sharpshooter, talk about motorcycles with Creosote Achilles and take a roadtrip with Q Continuum, head off into the woods with Animal (will STEVE SMITH come along?), hit the books with Raphael, work on wellness with CPRM, and read a perfectly timed parable from Mojeaux. And, you never know, SugarFree might have another wonderful installment for us. Oh, yes, and I’ll give you a weekly poll in the usual spot on Hump Day.

I’m really looking forward to the week!

Don’t forget, you can join the illustrious Contributing Writers page by, you know, contributing writing.

Now, without further ado, I present the Saturday Night Open Post. GYST Packers!

  • Poll: Favorite Season

    Autumn is the best season.

    • Beautiful, complex, ever-changing views, that surprise one as one turns a corner.
    • Crisp, cool, low-humidity air.
    • Leaves to wade through, releasing that wonderful scent and that fun rustling noise.
    • Apples and pears to pick.
    • The Fucking Hate Birds, the Birds That Hate go away.
    • The lawn no longer needs mowing, yet there is no snow to shovel.
    • The final burst of ripening vegetables.
    • Fewer humans in the grocery store in the middle of the day.
    • “Indian” Summer.
    • REAL football
    • No more mosquitoes.
    • Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta.
    • Apple cider and doughnuts.
    • The annual visit from a beloved European friend.
    • Pressing colorful leaves in wax paper to hang in the window.
    • Wonderful deserted lakes on which to canoe and kayak.
    • Lower electric bills, because a/c is off and heat is not yet on.
    • The return of casseroles, fondue, and heavier red wines.

Do you agree with me, and are therefore correct? Or do you have a different, inferior, opinion?

  • Coming Attractions for the First Full Week of Autumn (and Saturday Night Open Post)

    Hey, Glibs!

I’m on the road this week, but that doesn’t mean you can escape me. You know that webcam that mysteriously turns on when least you expect it? Guess who’s really watching you!

OK, not really, because SugarFree stories scare me enough.

So what’s on tap for next week? Of course, there are always links–by Sloopy, Brett L, and OMWC, a beer post from mexican sharpshooter, (hopefully) the return of Vegan School from Web Dom–assuming she whipped those websites into shape, a Wednesday night poll from yours truly, your star forecast from Not Adahn, and perhaps SugarFree will be tempted by the sociopathic tendencies of the current White House residents to grace us all with a story. And, drumroll please, the ever popular What Are We Reading post!

Also coming your way is another week of magnificent Glibertariat-contributed writing: Suthenboy’s much-anticipated post on how to sell one’s timber for fun and profit; a subscription service review from A Leap at the Wheel; a possibly-depressing-because-plausible piece from trshmnstr (in addition to what will be for me a depressing GlibFit check-in); BakedPenguin’s NFL Pick-’em; the first in a Kitbash series from UnCivilServant; and an update on Omaha Beach from Yusef Drives A Kia.
(Ugh, sorry Yusef. Posting from my phone is hard!)

You may now proceed to a Saturday Night Open Post in an orderly manner. No pushing, shoving, name-calling, or line-cutting. See you next week!

  • Poll: Religiosity

In the comments of a post this past Monday by Gadianton, the question came up about religiosity among the Glibertariat.

For many people this is a complicated, and perhaps sensitive, topic. But when have we ever shied away from THAT here at Glibs?

However, there are some parameters, please. As you all know, there have been a great many atrocities committed in the name of religion across history, and that continues today. There have also been a great many benevolent acts committed in the name of religion, also continuing today. This is not a poll about which religion is better or worse. This is specifically asking about YOU and your life.

So here we go! As always, answer all questions, none, or bits and pieces, as you see fit.

    1. Are you an adherent to any particular religion? If so, which?

    2. Were you “born into” a family religious tradition? If so, have you remained in that tradition?

    3. Have your views on faith and religion changed at different stages in your life?

    I’ll start.

My mother was Roman Catholic, so my sibs and I were all christened. None of us were confirmed. None of us has stayed in that tradition, although at one point I worked for an RC religious order. Mom stayed a member and served on the parish council and was a regular reader for Mass.

My father was United Methodist, refusing to convert when he married my mother in 1958 (which almost scuttled the whole thing). His second wife is Lutheran, going back and forth between Missouri Synod and ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America), based on who are the other members of the particular church. Dad has been active at various points in whatever Lutheran church to which my stepmom happened to belong, but has never become a member. He is “quietly religious,” but especially likes the “doing good” activities, such as rebuilding homes after Katrina and helping families locally (his non-academic-year profession was electrician), running food banks and cooking for fundraising events, helping kids directly and supporting kid-centric charities and organizations.

I am an ordained non-denominational minister. I certainly value the legal ability to perform various ministerial ceremonies, but that’s not the main reason I became ordained. People tend to tell me everything, and I mean everything. I have always assumed anything someone tells me is told in confidence, unless it was explicitly stated otherwise. Ordination confers some (varying by state statute) protection against being coerced into spilling that information to representatives of the government. I can legally say, “Fuck off, slavers” in many instances and get away with it.

    Your turn!

  • Peach Raspberry Crisp

    [et_pb_section bb_built=”1″][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=”4_4″][et_pb_text admin_label=”intro text” _builder_version=”3.15″]

Web Dominatrix sends her apologies. She’s crazy busy finishing up websites for a couple new clients. And these are ladies you do NOT want to disappoint (unless you’re into that sort of thing).

So, you’re stuck with me as a last minute substitute. Sorry, kids.

I thought I’d post one of my favorite vegan recipes. I’ve been making this regularly since last summer (2017) and I really could just eat the entire pan by myself.

Except it would be wrong not to share.

    Right?

    [/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=”4_4″][et_pb_divider _builder_version=”3.15″ height=”2px” color=”#ffffff” /][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=”1_2″][et_pb_text admin_label=”Recipe ” _builder_version=”3.15″]

This recipe comes from America’s Test Kitchen cookbook Vegan for Everybody, which both Web Dom and I have mentioned before.

You may sub 1-3/4 pounds frozen peaches for the fresh. Make sure you thaw completely before using.

    Peach Raspberry Crisp

    Filling

    • 2-1/2 pounds peaches (peeled, halved, pitted and cut into 1/2 inch wedges)
    • 1/4 cup organic sugar
    • 1/8 tsp salt
    • 2 tbsp instant tapioca (finely ground)
    • 1 tbsp lemon juice
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract
    • 10 ounces raspberries

    Topping

    • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
    • 1/4 cup organic brown sugar
    • 1/4 cup organic sugar
    • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
    • 1/4 tsp ground ginger
    • 1/4 tsp salt
    • 1/4 cup coconut oil (melted and cooled)
    • 1/2 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
    • 1/2 cup pecans (chopped)
    • 2 tbsp water

    For the Filling

    1. Adjust oven rack to upper-middle position and heat oven to 400 degrees. Gently toss peaches with sugar and salt in bowl and let sit, stirring occasionally, for 30 minutes. Drain peaches in colander set inside bowl; reserve 2 tablespoons juice and discard extra.

    2. Return drained peaches to bowl and toss with reserved juice, ground tapioca, lemon juice, and vanilla. Transfer to 8-inch square baking dish, press gently into an even layer, then top with raspberries.

    For the Topping

    1. Meanwhile, process flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, ginger, and salt in food processor until combined, about 15 seconds. Add melted oil and pulse until mixture resembles wet sand, about 10 pulses. Add oats, pecans, and water and pulse until mixture forms marble-size clumps and no loose flour remains, about 15 pulses. Refrigerate mixture for at least 15 minutes.

    2. Sprinkle topping evenly over fruit, breaking into 1/2 inch pieces as necessary. Bake until topping is well browned and fruit is bubbling around edges, 30 to 35 minutes, rotating dish halfway through baking. Transfer to wire rack and let cool for at least 30 minutes. Serve warm.

  • Coming Attractions & Perhaps Saturday Night Open Post (if you ask really nicely)

    Hey, kids! It’s Saturday night!

That means it’s time to clue you in on all the great stuff we’ve got lined up for next week here at The Last Best Place on the Internet.

I guess a few people didn’t like the number of posts in their listing on the Contributing Writers page, because we’ve had a little flurry of new posts coming in. Woohoo!

This coming week in addition to the regular great Daily Links posts by Sloopy, BrettL, and OMWC, we’ve got beloved regular features from mexican sharpshooter, SugarFree (unless the work monsters or his cats gobble him up), Web Dom, Not Adahn, trshmnstr, and yours truly. We’ve also got Part 6 of Suthenboy’s Reloading Series, and new pieces from The Hyperbole, Gadianton, straffinrun, CPRM, Sensei, Animal, and hopefully, BakedPenguin’s NFL pick-’em for Week 3 of the regular season. (No pressure, BP!)

Oh, anyone interested in the autumn Beer It Forward (BIF)? See below and make sure you do the part about emailing Nephilium, not me. I have a well-known distaste for beer, so it would end up in my spam.

And now, because I’m feeling magnanimous thanks to a little delicious imbibing before and during dinner, go ahead and have a Saturday Night Open Post! I hope you took your weekly shower first; it sometimes gets a mite crowded in here.

  • Site Updates

As the number of Glibs writing for the community happily continues to grow, I thought it would be nice to give you all a little extra recognition. Because, hey, let’s be honest: that’s really all you get here. 😉

To that end, I’ve done a couple things. First, if you have written even one article for the community, I’ve upgraded you to Contributor. That’s why your dashboard might look a little different when you login to the site.

Along with giving you the ability to draft your own future articles–after we give the go-ahead in reply to your proposed article submission form, this also means that your byline and author bio will show on your posts.

Please be aware that there are currently 2,339 published articles on Glibertarians. I went through them all one by one tonight and tried to make sure I edited them to show your byline and author bio. Going forward this will automatically happen, but I wanted your previous articles to be included.

Because…I’ve also created a Contributing Writers page for the site, which is linked from the About Us page up top, and is also in the footer navigation.

As you can see from this screenshot, the page shows the writer’s avatar, username, bio, and number of posts. The post number button will take a viewer to an index of all the articles by that writer.

I tried to hit all the posts of current Glibs, but if I inadvertently missed your post among the 2,339, please drop me a note through the website contact form and I’ll correct the oversight.

Conversely, if for whatever reason you DO NOT want to be included on the Contributing Writers page, let me know that as well and I will remove your listing.

Since you will now be able to draft your posts, I’m putting together an information page with guidelines on how to turn off the sidebar (etc) and how to let the editors know it’s ready to be reviewed and scheduled. We’ll include a link to that info when we reply to your submission form. No worries, however, if you can’t draft your own posts. We’re here to help!

Again, sincere thanks from all of the Founders for generous sharing of your interests, thoughts, passions and knowledge. The Glibertariat make the community what it is. We truly would not still be here without all of you.

Moving on. A couple weeks ago I added a Downloads page to the site, linked up top and in the footer menu. At the moment this includes Hatcher’s Notebook recommended by Suthenboy, and Defense Distributed’s free plans. I imagine there will be other resources added in the future.

I’m off to catch a couple hours sleep. Have a great day!

  • Poll: Lost Friends & Family

As most of you know, this past weekend OMWC and I had a lovely dinner with A Leap at the Wheel and Pope Jimbo. During which I asked if they had any suggestions for this week’s poll.

Pope Jimbo’s response was, perhaps, predictable

    .

However, Leap had a great suggestion, and so, I present this week’s poll with a big H/T to Leap!

How many friends have you lost due to your politics?

How many family members have stopped speaking to you due to your politics?

Do you have any suggestions for future GlibPolls? If yes, email to: poll at thiswebsite dot com

    Discuss!

  • Coming Attractions and Saturday Night Open Post

Greetings from the Twin Cities! Probably the less said about Tundra’s night the better. After all, I’m much nicer than OMWC.

I will say that if Tundra ever decides to not dis me (this is TWICE now), he will be hard-pressed to measure up to the charm and fine specimens of manhood that are A Leap at the Wheel and Pope Jimbo. They showed us a lovely evening, and I so appreciate them making time to get together with us. It’s good to know who values my friendship and who, well, doesn’t think that much of me.

Tonight we will be having Neapolitan style pizza from Punch Pizza, and I can assure you there will be no pineapple involved.

Anyway, this coming week, Glibs have stepped up yet again with some great articles. We’ll have posts from A Leap at the Wheel, Not Adahn, Web Dom, trshmnstr, robc, Yusef Drives a Kia, The Bearded Hobbit, Suthenboy, and PieInTheSky. And I’ll have a little poll for you in the Wednesday evening spot.

OK, on to the Saturday Night Open Post! Have a great rest of your weekend. (Go Pack!)
