I’m typically too late to threads to say anything, but I do want to thank whoever brought up They Shall Not Grow Old. I just got back from seeing it and it’s very worthwhile.
It’s worth seeing? I’m planning on going to the showing on the 27th. I’ve got the day off, so I can go and see it during the day and have plenty of time to drink and be melancholy. I’m assuming there’s a fair bit of time given to Gallipoli?
It’s very well done, but there’s no time given to Gallipoli. After the film proper ends, Peter Jackson does another half hour or so explanation of what he was working with and how he had to ignore so many things just to get the concentration he did.
According to PJ, it’s a film made by a non-historian for non-historians. However, when he mentions some of his personal memorabilia that he used to help augment the knowledge-base, it’s clear he’s a little more involved than your average man in the street.
I strongly suspect that anyone who thinks he/she might like it will actually love it.
It is only showing for 1-2 nights. On Oahu it showed today and again on the 27th. No other shows. Not sure the DTG’s for your locales.
Short bullet review: Go watch this movie!
I was skeptical because it is the LoR director and it has colorized film but the trailers looked interesting so says I, “Why not go watch it? You’ve walked some of those battlefields and been to the Imperial War Museum.” I am glad I watched it and I think you’ll be glad you did too.
Jackson was asked by the IWM to come up with a movie using the old movie footage and interviews with soldiers from the 1960’s and 1970’s. He focused on the British Army experience on the western front and he brings those long dead Soldiers alive. The movie is nothing but the old footage and the interviews with the soldiers. Not a word of other narration.
As a former soldier it is a testament to Jackson’s skills that I recognized the timeless aspects of soldiering and the unique aspects of 1914-1918 and how these soldiers were people and not just jerky old images. There were a few moments when I felt my heart beat faster and even a faint taste of pre-battle in my mouth and that is damn rare for me from a movie.
Before the movie starts Jackson invites you to stay after the credits for a 30 minute explanation of how the movie was made. That is worth the price of admission right there. Plus in that 30 minutes is one of the most touching moments of the movie. Jackson films one of the scenes today and as he cuts back to the close ups of the infantry from the original footage drops that the the majority of the men you are looking at will be dead in less than 30 minutes. You are looking at the last images of the dead as they themselves saw it. Haunting.
Jackson does encourage the viewer to ask their parents and grandparents about what their parents and grandparents said about the war. Because even those 2d hand memories are fading fast as those generations die. This war impacted both sides of my family and is directly the reason my father was born here versus Italy.
I didn’t bother with the 3D version, This big screen version was enough.
But again, go see this film.
The trailer looks amazing. Alas, I just don’t go to the movies. I assume this will be released shortly on Netflix or some other service? Anyone? Bueller?

Louisiana-brand hot sauce and Crystal are tied for best Louisiana-style hot sauce–Crystal is a better condiment, Louisiana is a better ingredient–but sriracha is a superior all-around hot sauce. Tabasco doesn’t even bear mentioning.
All I know is that I put store the brand version Texas Pete on my eggs and it is delicious.

I’m not familiar with “Texas Pete”. Sriracha has become very popular here – I didn’t like it at first but it’s grown on me. A little goes a long way.

Hell, I don’t even know if “gambling” is the right word. Over half is going into “aggressive” mutual funds and the rest I am just picking some stocks I think might do well (and some boring old blue chips) and just playing around. I figure it’ll give me a bit of skin in the game to get me to learn more about Wall Street.
I basically -at least for now- am just looking for somewhere I can make some decisions and get my toes wet in the market. And one of the big pluses (for me) is that I can buy fractional stocks. So I can still research and invest in specific companies while only risking 10’s of dollars instead of 1,000’s.

Even good quality cork occasionally goes bad and lets in air, but the worst offenders are the composite bits.
Composite natural cork is as Chicken McNuggets are to Chick-fil-A nuggets.
Oxygen exchange in long term ageing is about the only issue.
What I’ve also noticed in the last few years is that the frequency of corked bottles has significantly decreased with natural corks.

It’s a Pokémon named “Psyduck”. My stepsons told me about it. It’s a platypus that is occasionally paralyzed by migraines that, if sufficiently intense, allow it to give of powerful psychic energy bursts.
The kids told me about it when we tried to explain to them what my temporal lobe epilepsy is, so he’s my Pokémon spirit animal.

I’ve successfully dodged Pokémon so most of that is lost on me. But I do get why he/she/it is your spirit animal. Good choice.
I don’t know much about Pokémon either; never saw a cartoon or any of that. But my understanding is they are all unique and mostly good critters with various powers used to fight evil with kids as helpers/users.

Didn’t have time to post last night, but “They Shall Not Grow Old” was an amazing presentation – great making-of discussion after the credits too. Definitely worth seeing on the big screen if you have a chance. One more time stateside on the 27th. Guess it already came out on blu-ray in the UK.
Basically just veterans narrating their experience the entire flick – no narrator or anything. Really good!
