OK, you guys, must be R-rated or lower. Think of our Family Friendly Certification!
For a large number of you, the answer should be that horrible movie with the giant rubber fish. But, sadly, none of you feel at all guilty about liking it.
So, come on, you can tell us. We won’t judge you.
OK, I couldn’t even type that without cracking up. But….
What movie do you feel most guilty about loving?

The quick and the dead.
I introduced that movie to my wife by saying “This movie is terrible. I’ve seen it a dozen times. Let’s watch it.” She was mystified by that intro but watched anyways and came to the same conclusion. Terrible, but you can’t not watch.
Saw it in the theater. I liked it, although not re-watch-worthy.
^Same, But I’ve watched it many times.
This is a much better The Quick and the Dead
Neat. I like Sam Elliot
He was fun in The Ranch too.
He also brought just a tiny bit of class to the below-mentioned Roadhouse.
And The Big Lebowski.
Thank You for Smoking was good too.
Independence Day
Confession time: I get a little choked up during Bill Pullman’s speech.
Me too! Also when Randy Quaid goes up the mothership’s arsehole. “Hey, boys! I’m baaaaaaaack!”
Something about the fact that he’s just as nutty in real life as in the movie makes everything right in the world.
“According to ancient astronaut theorists … ”
I think one of the glibs knows Giorgio Tsoukalos.
Like for real? I have a buddy who would probably try and kiss me if I were to give him an autographed pic of that goofy fucker.
He lives in my neighborhood. I’m acquaintances with his wife. I’ve never formally met the dude.
I’m not saying he’s an alien, but…
God bless the fans, but I don’t get the appeal of that stuff at all.
I can only speak for myself: It’s all an interesting thought experiment.
Good movie! I remember finding a VHS of it at a garage sale when I was 12 or 13 and watching it until it broke.
As a kid, and when Blockbuster was still a thing, the parental units would allow us kids to rent a movie to watch on Fridays. I often chose ‘Independence Day’. Also, there was a lot of ‘Jurassic Park’, ‘Speed’ and ‘Austin Powers’. I can’t explain that combo or how it made me turn out.
Jurassic Park was named to the National Film Registry today.
Well now I feel old because it came out when I was almost 30 and certainly old enough to know better.
Huh, I like some bad movies, but I don’t feel guilty about it.
Then again, I also think Jaws was a good movie. The sequels are crap though.
Jaws is a good movie. Don’t let them gaslight you.
I was going to wager that UnCivil would be the first to play the ‘Guilty pleasures is a stupid concept’ card.
You did wager. With me, remember? Pay up.
I sent it UPS, your driver is afraid to go out because it rained three days ago.
I got a new one! He has cajones!
You owe me $50 for the wager, too.
You lose for two reasons.
First, I am often late to these evening posts, because I have things to get done when not trapped at my desk, making it improbable that I get to weigh in when the thread is alive.
Second, All movies are at best guilty pleasures.
I like many of the Troma films, such as Bloodsucking Freaks, Class of Nuke ‘Em High, Toxic Avenger, etc.
Guilt is for mortals
…and morals are for the guilty.
So very many,
Hudson Hawk
Yeah….don’t feel guilty for most of them. Fun, lightweight….
Maybe on the less “arty” more “exploitative” side, some of my Japanese splatter-core, but I guess that’s a different sort of thing. (ie. Tokyo Gore Police – very NSFW!)
The Commitments
*head butts Tundra*
So cliched, so cheesy.
So good.
Secondhand Lions
That’s a heart warming film. Also, what happened to Haly Joel Osmond?
The demon spawn of Hayley Mills and Donny Osment.
Wasn’t he in that awful Entourage movie?
I never watched entourage
#metoo
The TV show on HBO was entertaining junk food. There were some good laughs and lots of sexy young women.
the tie-in to Bloom County was a nice touch
The Gods Must Be Crazy.
Young Einstein.
Hudson Hawk.
True Grit. (No, not that True Grit, the other True Grit.)
*leaves coke bottle at animal household causing mass chaos*
Oh, oh, oh, I have another one! Top Secret with Val Kilmer.
That’s a classic, nothing to feel guilty about.
I know a little German…
“der gey schlutten”
How do we know he’s NOT Mel Torme?
Fun Fact: I had just watched TS when this site was going up. I had endeavored to change my TOS screen name to “NOT Mel Torme” because I love that part.
Why I ended up going with “NOT A Naked Intruder” is somewhat lost to time, but I recall there was a news article about a naked intruder, and, well….something something.
I don’t hate the phantom menace because I was 10 when it came out, the exact right age for that movie.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s a shit movie and a stain on the legacy of star wars, but I ate that shit up as a 10 year old.
For the love of all that is is and isn’t holy, please tell me you didn’t walk around talking like Jar Jar Binks after watching it.
For what it’s worth, a handful of my roommates in college went to school with anakin and said he was a total prick.
walk around talking like Jar Jar Binks
Whosa are yousa to judge?
he was a total prick
Ep 1 or Ep 2/3 actor? The latter I totally get that from. Also, guilty pleasure: Jumper
Ep 1
I usually get a lot of shit for it, but I don’t enjoy anything in the Star Wars franchise. I fist watched the first three (4,5,6) right before Phantom Menace came out and I remember watching them and wondering what all the fuss was about.
Childhood nostalgia. My parents saw the original (what number? 4?) when it came out and laughed all the way through it. Apparently, the rest of the audience did not appreciate this.
I saw 4 in the theater when I was 7 years old. I thought it was most amazing thing ever. It’s definitely a nostalgia thing, but I think it holds up well enough for what it is.
Second. My dad took me to the matinee, and we got right in. The second showing, the line was nearly a football field long.
I laughed all the way through Paranormal Activity while on a date. My lady friend and the other theater goers were note amused. She kept hitting me on the arm telling me to stop.
The first Paranormal activity was very good. Some of the sequels are good, others not so much.
Speaking of stuff that was interesting during childhood but didn’t age well.
So sad she didn’t take care of herself.
The Goods
Any Superhero movie. I feel like as a grown ass man I shouldn’t enjoy comic book schlock anymore.
Watchmen is a great a movie. It also stands on its own — you don’t need to know anything about the characters before watching it.
Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead and the Fast and the Furious series are my cinema guilty pleasures.
Loved zombie ass..
Give Zombeaver a shot
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xR-SMWo0hHI
Zombeaver was much better than I thought it would be.
I’ll check that one out for sure, thanks!
Four Weddings And A Funeral
+1 Holy Spigot
Another guilty pleasure is Bridget Jones’s Diary.
My wife loves that movie.
You had to rub it in…
2012
At least right up until the arks are launched.
The science is horrible, but the special effects eye candy is a lot of fun.
The science is horrible, but the special effects eye candy is a lot of fun.
So you’re saying it’s a fun ride.
Was not aware of this movie but I see it shares at least two stars with Identity, one of my guilty pleasures.
Generally: Mean Girls*
Seasonally Relevant: Jingle All the Way**
Science Fiction: SW Ep II***
*Entertaining with a moral lesson and some decent, if trite, humor.
**Kinda dumb, but fun Christmas movie. Also, Turbo Man.
***The story is dumb. The acting is dumber. But it is pretty with good action sequences and at least qualifies as a SW movie, unlike Ep’s 7 and 8, which are self parody buddy comedies in space.
Mean Girls is a great movie. Plus, Lacey Chabert.
///SoFetch
Mean Girls was great. Lindsay Lohan was so beautiful back then. Don’t do drugs, kids.
I’m the same age as Lindsay. I lusted heavily over her in Mean Girls.
Same age as Amanda Bynes and the Olsen twins too. None of those four could have aged better?
*Shakes fist at the sky*
At least the Olsen twins were kind enough to essentially disappear and let there better looking younger sister take the spotlight.
They are far too busy enjoying their collection of platinum dildos.
Red & Red 2.
So campy. So fun.
I love those and I am not ashamed. Plus, the brunette lead whatshername, definitely would. Total MILF.
Mary Louise Parker
https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000571/?ref_=tt_cl_t2
She was still gorgeous in Weeds (which like most Showtime series started out good, then went on too long.)
Nothing wrong with those.
Now I want to watch them but they aren’t available for streaming on any service I have.
Ghost comes to mind.
There can be only one…..
Road House, hands down.
I thought you’d be bigger.
Awwwww, SHIT YES!
When a man sticks a gun in your face, the only option is to rip his throat out with your bare hands.
I thought Richard Widmark was good in Road House.
First of many trolls by Ted in this post.
[Pushes wheelchair-bound Mike S. down a staircase, giggling maniacally]
Fun Fact . . . Dalton doesn’t teabag people, he potato sacks them
If there can only be one then… Highlander.
OT: Hot ladies with freckles.
http://archive.is/U7K6S
6, 7, 19, 20, 22, 26, 31, 33, 34, 35.
Two many to choose from.
Too. Screw auto correct.
Pump Up the Volume
?
Yes to this too.
HHH
Ha – only seen it once but I can see that.
I have the soundtrack…on cassette.
And you play it while cruising around in that bitchin’ woody Caprice?
It sounds fantastic with the factory Concert Sound II sound system with Dolby B noise reduction!
Excellent teen rebellion movie.
Never seen it.
Watch it and then immediately watch broken arrow.
Why in the world would you watch Broken Arrow?
Because Face Off wasn’t on?
If Face Off ‘s not on Con Air‘s got to be.
I liked ConAir.
My guilty pleasure is I like every movie Nick Cage has been in.
There, I said it.
Ha – Peggy Sue Got Married is a perfect example of the genre
Wild At Heart?
I liked Lord of War
+1 bath of blood
OK, I guess I haven’t seen every movie he’s been in. Read the synopsis and that does not sound good.
Wild At Heart might be the exception that proves the rule
“Any movie that has Harry Dean Stanton in it can’t be all bad”
However, I do remember finding the “So what do all you faggots want?” scene pretty comical.
Jeff Chandler as Cochise?
Samantha Mathis was a solid wood.
Atlas Shrugged – just kidding, haven’t bothered to watch it yet.
Highlander.
+ (there can be only) 1
I’m going to watch the 10th Victim. I’ll be back in 92 minutes to let you know just how guilty I feel.
Not horrible, not good either. Apparently highly influential on the Austin Powers movies, nipple guns, and Ming Tea.
Point Break
The most manly movie ever. Even the love interest was more butch than the average Hollywood leading man.
She was good in tank girl.
^
One day, back in 1994, I was tripping hard on acid, and had a 45 minute conversation with Lori Petty. We talked about Zen Buddhism and Taoist mysticism. Nice lady.
I worked at a New Age bookstore. I’d drop acid at work. And smoke weed.
Ahhh… she was on a Voyager episode. (I saw her picture and was like who is that??)
Quintessential American movie. A classic – (apologies to Ted S.). ?
Hateful.
Who cares what that lactophile thinks.
I also am slightly guilty about liking Speed. (Idk how I overlooked this one while deciding)
Pretty sure most of us could draw up an extensive list after thinking about it for a while.
Speed was a perfectly good action flick — great cast, original premise. The sequel was crap.
The sequel was crap.
Agreed.
Starship Troopers
By the Sword
Best of the Best
Starship Troopers was definitely over-the-top, but it still worked.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1CwjrAAfxc
Horror, comedy, and love story
The Beastmaster
I don’t remember the movie, but I vaguely remember the TV show.
Yes!
Career Opportunities
It’s absolutely horrible, but Jennifer Connelly in a tank top.
Try requiem for a dream.
“Be excited, be be excited, be excited…”
I found that scene rough to watch to be honest. In fact, the final twenty minutes or so of that film was pretty fucked up. Watching all three of them destroy their body, mind and soul simultaneously is harsh way to end a flick. Appropriate but harsh.
Requiem for a Dream was the first DVD I ever bout. (I typically don’t buy movies, my brother does and then I take them)
Requiem For A Dream is a great film.
I don’t even know what this topic means. But please tell me I’m not the only one here who has never seen a movie named anything like zombie ass or zombie beaver. I have to keep a little faith in humanity.
Seen’em both… and enjoyed
Well, you didn’t help.
My motto for movies is “how bad can it be”?
The answer occasionally surprises me.
Gummo?
Had to look it up. Seems right up my alley though.
Any movie that makes me say WTF, usually I enjoy.
Boxing Helena
Ichi the Killer
The Man from Earth
Excision is one the few movies with an ending that left me with me with my jaw on my chest and feeling a nut punch to my heart.
Boxing Helena was great. Try death becomes her.
Excision.. I’ll keep an eye out for.
reminds me of American Mary
Never saw Excision, but liked American Mary.
American Mary was great. A bit more low-key is “Love Object”.
Ahhhh, yeah. I bet I could dig on American Mary. Much obliged.
“Ichi the Killer”
Oh yeah. Miike films are messed up. If you like ultraviolent movies, however, you’ll probably like them.
If you think you might like super violent Japanese movies, be sure to watch Audition‘
Warning – serious gore.
I thought Gummo was just too weird for weirdness sake.
Kids and Spring Beakers are great though.

Oh, NSFW
Sorry
Goddamnit, wrong link…
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xNONBOSkIXE
Again, sorry. High stress job for a quasi-local celebrity. My employer is fretting over them to an absurd degree and I’m the lead on the job. My nerves are fried.
That reminds me of Flesh Gordon 2: Flesh Gordon meets the Cosmic Cheerleaders . . . now that’s an awful movie
I saw Zombeaver. It’s campy fun riffing on the genre.
I watched Zombie Strippers, it was… a “movie” I guess?
I never seen Zombie Ass.
But I did see Zombie Strippers.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0960890/
Oh , it’s Japanese new horror?
I liked Tokyo Gore Police, Machine Girl, Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl, etc.
(Tag is an excellent Sion Sono film, but I wouldn’t put in same genre.)
Oh, and Dead Sushi is an excellent satire of the genre.
See also “Psycho Gothic Lolita”, “Meatball Machine”, “Robo Geisha”, “Hell Driver”.
There have been a couple more recently but not released yet with subs that I can tell.
OK, I’ll try to check those out.
Zombeavers. Good stuff.
In the ’60s I was stationed at a remote site for 5 years, free movies 5 nights a week. Probably haven’t seen 3-4 movies since then. No movies named anything though I did watch “Grapes of Wrath” a few years ago. Deepened my libertarian stripe. Need more government.
Top Gun
The whole thing makes no sense. The main enemy plane is an American plane (F-5) that is technically inferior to the F-14 and they train against even lessor planes (A-4’s) while claiming those planes are technically superior to the F-14 and if that’s true why the *expletive* are you using the F-14 as your main carrier-born fighter?? But, you know, it’s fun and stuff.
The Tarantino deconstruction of the homosexual themes is awesome!
I’m trying to remember the movie that was in…
Long distance F-14 would win every time. In close-in air-to-air combat the F-5 and A-4 (with good pilots) could give the F-14 fits. The US relied too much on missiles during the early part of Vietnam. Had to be retaught the skill which is the reason for the Top Gun school.
howard the duck
Lea Thompson is worth watching that for.
Yup
Trivia. Exterior shots were filmed at the home offfice of Fireman’s Fund Insurance in Marin County.
My ex was one of the medical people on the set. Absolutely horrible movie but it paid for redoing to backyard.
If they made a live documentary of Sadbeard and Maureen Dowd being forced to smoke a pound of weed, I’d totally watch that. And I wouldn’t feel guilty, not even if both of them threw themselves out the window from the 100th floor.
Did you ever read her piece about how she freaked out on edibles?
Better Off Dead
Highlander
“Better Off Dead”
That’s a classic. Right up there with The Goonies, Willow, Legend, Labyrinth, and Gremlins.
Highlander
Bad movies. Good tv series.
Especially Tessa.
The Arrival
(The Charlie Sheen movie from the ’90s, not the shitty new one)
Hmph, I liked the new one.
I thought the aliens and their language were stupid.
I liked that movie too, the miniature black hole weapons were cool. I think that movie came out the same year as that god-awful Jodie Foster sci-fi movie Contact?
Southland Tales.
Omg. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0405336/
If you haven’t watched it, try it. It’s Zardoz level, with way more cameos.
It could have been so much more as the sophomore effort of the director of “Donny Darko”. Just too much of the kitchen sink (look for the prequel graphic novel). At least he got back into form with “The Box”.
There’s another movie blogger who runs an annual blogathon called “Against the Grain” where you pick two movies: one that everybody else loves but you hate, and one that everybody else pans but you like. I’ve participated for the past three years and picked:
Movies that everybody else loves but I hate: Doctor Zhivago, Being There, and Gigi
Movies everybody else hates that I enjoyed: Untamed Youth (Mamie Van Doren as juvenile prison slave labor); Night of the Lepus; and Endless Love (1981). It goes spectacularly off the rails and is fun precisely because everybody is so nuts.
I liked Night of the Lepus. I like movies like that. Them, Tremors, …
Dammit Jim, I’m a doctor, not a university president!
君の名は。
“Your Name” in English.
Wildly popular, for no good reason. Time travel and male female body swapping tropes. But still makes me emotional.
I don’t get its global popularity either. It has lots of Japanese specific things that don’t and weren’t translated in the subtitles.
It’s a solid anime feature flick – caught it in the theater and on blu-ray. That director keeps getting better.
True, but the art is amazing.
Why are people saying Highlander is a guilty pleasure?
Highlander is awesome and you shouldn’t be embarrassed about liking it.
Jeez, next next thing you people will be saying Excalibur or something.
Because Christopher Lambert is a terrible actor?
Are you kidding? He brought such soul and poignancy to “The Hunted”
I love Excalibur.
Lousy quality sound track, great movie.
For some reason I seem to watch a lot of Lifetime (or equivalent) movies on a rainy Sunday while hungover. I’ll admit I wasted a whole Sunday one time watching all 4 or 5 of the Flowers in the Attic series
^Winner^
banginglc1 wins the internet.
Shut it down. We’re done.
I must have been shut in the same day but I managed to tear myself away somewhere during the 2nd one.
I don’t think I’ve seen any of them.
That’s
probablydefinitely a good thing.“Cyber Seduction: His Secret Life” and “Pregnancy Pact” are classics.
The One
It turns out I have a lot of these. At least I don’t like ‘Rumble in the Bronx’. I couldn’t even make it through that.
Mid-90’s Jackie Chan is an acquired taste.
Still, I’m not ashamed to say I saw The Tuxedo in the theaters.
My mom would scrounge the bargain movie bin at Walmart so that we’d have something to do at her place. As a result, she had a comprehensive collection of Jackie Chan movies. Certainly an acquired taste, but damn funny on many levels.
Late 80s. I was in martial arts. Went through a Jackie Chan phase.
Ever see Kung Foo Hustle? Not a Jackie Chan movie but somewhat similar in a comedic take on the martial arts movie.
Probably. We’d get together for binge watches and everything ran together for me after a while.
I liked that one but nowhere near as much as his previous movie Shaolin Soccer.
It’s odd for us who grew up on “Who Am I?”-era Jackie Chan to get use to the current serious dramatic actor Jackie Chan.
Well, I mean, Jennifer Love Hewitt.
Beat me to it.
In my early teen years I had a huge thing for JLH. I’d print out pictures of her in her bra on our family’s brand new color dot matrix printer and . . ughh . . . look at them
I caught her hawking Vagazzle stuff on some day time show.
Drunken Master is tha tits.
Those are good.
I like the earlier Jackie Chan better.
Although Rumble in The Bronx was great.
Forgot about “Escape from New York”
And let’s not forget “…I’m all out of Bubblegum”. So most of John Carpenter.
Something ain’t right if you’re embarrassed. Those are classics.
When cell phones were first pocketable my ringtone was Escape from New York. 8bit midi or something equally as awful.
I forget the flip phone brand…
I still use it for a buddy that I rarely talk to (he works graves).
Yes, “They Live” is great.
Yeah wtf.
You shut your whore mouth. That’s an awesome movie.
Showgirls.
Horrible movie where half the females walk around topless half the time.
+2 Elizabeth Berkeley
+1 Versace
Good choice, but I’m not sure I feel compelled to ever watch that again.
Meh, the acting and the sex is better on pretty much anything on Pornhub.
Zing! Also, correct.
Dumb and Dumber
Also, one Sunday at my Fraternity house, an entire group of us spent a whole Sunday in my room watching Bring It On, Bring It On Again, and Bring It On All or Nothing while binge drinking
Okay. I am going to level with you guys. I like Flashdance.
I don’t know if I should feel guilty about it or not, but one underappreciated movie I love is Big Trouble In Little China
I <3 that movie. Not embarrassing or underappreciated at all.
No way That’s one to be proud of.
Well, OK then. Thanks to both of you for the vote of confidence.
I wasn’t sure because I know it did not do well when it came out and I’ve never really heard anyone talk about it in all the years since.
It didn’t do well, true, but it has more than made up for it since. Carpenter was very bitter about its reception.
Zero guilt, man.
Excellent movie. It’s one of those that I’ll watch again and again when it’s on or available on streaming, along with The Delta Force, Where Eagles Dare, The Dirty Dozen, and Die Hard.
I have several:
Men at Work
88 Minutes
Dragnet
The Last Boy Scout
The Man Who Knew Too Little
And the one I’m most embarrassed to admit I watch, SWAT. It’s just SO ridiculous that I can’t stay away.
Dragnet was a good comedy. The rest, well, you’re right.
Repo Man. I’ve probably watched that movie about four dozen times.
“I’d rather live on my knees that die on my feet.”
I saw it for the first time a couple years ago. My takeaway was “I guess you had to be there”.
It gets better with subsequent viewings. Many layers to chew through.
“You need to read Diuretics, the science of matter over mind. It’ll change your life.”
Diuretics: how constantly going to the bathroom changed my life.
I’m not surprised. Most of my 30+-year-old guilty pleasures I’ve seen a dozen times or more.
Repo Man is awesome and nothing to be ashamed about
^This. It was a great movie.
You ever hear of the neutron bomb? Destroys people – leaves buildings standing. Fits in a suitcase. It’s so small, no one knows it’s there until – BLAMMO. Eyes melt, skin explodes, everybody dead. So immoral, working on the thing can drive you mad. That’s what happened to this friend of mine. So he had a lobotomy. Now he’s well again.
“Let’s go do some crimes.”
“Yeah, let’s get sushi and not pay.”
I should mention that I seek out old campy Sci fi, crappy westerns, and other old movies. I prefer the pacing and storytelling of the old (ca. 1950) movies over most modern stuff.
I can overlook the cardboard sets, the sappy dialogue, and the stiff acting.
Have you seen “they call me trinity” and “trinity is still my name”? I freaking love those spaghetti westerns.
Followed by My Name is Nobody. The Trinity trinity.
Great stuff! Love those flicks – hard to believe they’re virtually all dubbed.
Awesome flick.
I’ve never been certain if “my name is nobody” is part of the trinity movies. He never says his name and no bambino.
I haven’t. Mostly, I watch whatever comes down off the antenna.
I got one: Ladyhawke
I tried to watch that the other day. It would’ve aged very well if not for the awful soundtrack, and I love Alan Parsons.
You tried?! Try harder! It’s adorable.
OK, you’re right about the music. That seemed to be pretty common in the 80s – music that bears no relation whatsoever to the content of the movie.
Sorry, can’t. The soundtrack was fingernails on a chalkboard.
Not even eyecandy Rutger Hauer could save it.
Great movie.
Hw about Say Anything?
That’s another one of those movies everyone my age has seen except me.
I haven’t.
Get on it, kids.
Meh.
Commando. I consider it the perfect 80s action movie, but it’s not good
Escape from New York, Big Trouble in Little China, Predator, Die Hard are legitimately good, but, to paraphrase Mel Brooks, Commando rises below mere schlock of, say, Cobra or a Cannon ninja movie, which I will enjoy but certainly wouldn’t call a pleasure.
The Running Man is on a par with Commando, I’d say.
Jokes are not well spaced out, it tries to be a bit more than an action movie (the satire parts actually land lots of the time) and our protagonists kill count is woefully low.
I mean, it’s awesome, and definitely should go into guilty pleasure category.
Ooh, thought of another, provisionally – Conan The Destroyer. I’ll need to rewatch it, though.
(Conan the Barbarian is, again, legit great and much, much smarter and less nihilistic than it seems on the first pass)
Look who’s going all “Siskel & Ebert” up in here.
Running Man is deliberately campy, like Judge Dredd, Robocop, or Demolition Man.
Dredd (2012) was bona fide good though.
I must have missed that one.
To quote my mother, “Well, don’t!”
Dredd is legit. They had respect for the material, and, you usually can’t go wrong with Karl Urban.
Cobra was one I should have put on my list. Stallone at his best. “Your a disease and I’m the cure”.
Has anyone mentioned ZARDOZ? One would have to be guilty if one enjoyed that mess.
ZARDOZ NOW SPEAKS TO YOU, HIS HYPERBOLIC CHOSEN ONE. ZARDOZ SEES NO REASON TO FEEL GUILTY FOR LIKING ZARDOZ. AND ZARDOZ ADVISES THAT HIS CHOSEN’S ADHERE TO ZARDOZ. ZARDOZ HAS SPOKEN.
Vision Quest
The sound track is pure 80’s and great, and one song in particular has a lot of meaning for me beyond the movie.
With nothing on to watch the wife and I once sat through ‘Blood Sand’ and on another occasion ‘ Mansquito’. Then there are the ‘Sharknado’ movies. Complete crap that kept us amused for an hour each. We often jokingly use Blood Sand as the standard for cheap, awful movies. I think the whole movie was made on about 50 bucks.
Trollhunter. I liked that one.
Pretty In Pink
In general, I probably enjoy coming of age movies more than I probably should.
One Crazy Summer
Hmm, I’d forgotten about that type of movie — I’d go with Sixteen Candles.
It’s definitely no Breakfast Club
The Running Man, Big Trouble in Little China, Real Geniuses, The Last Starfighter, and any Cheech and Chong movie.
Also Breakin In with Rurt Reynolds and Casey Zeimesko
Oh, forgot about Burt – Cannonball Run!
I saw that when I was a kid and thought for years that it was awesome. Then I watched it again about 15 years ago and was…disappointed.
Smokey and the Bandit makes me laugh and “Eastbound and Down” makes me happy.
I streamed “The Last Dragon” last night so I guess that was one for me as well. Directa your feetsa to daddy Greens Pizza.
Vanity at her most attractive and some really poor 80’s Kung Foo in Harlem.
LEEEEEEEEROY!
Sukiyaki Hot Sake sue
Sho-Nuf!
Oh, and Steven Seagal’s early movies – the pre-2000s ones.
Excellent choices.
Above The Law will always get me to pause and watch for awhile.
Is that the Henry Silva one or the William Forsythe one?
Silva
Dolphin Lover – A documentary about a dude who fucked a dolphin for a year.
Hey, how about a spoiler alert?
The John McAfee Story?
“He fucks whales, but he loves dolphins.” A story of one man’s triumph over adversity, common sense, good taste and dictates of reason.
I’m sure that’s a pleasure for you, but are you really guilty about? 🙂
The dolphin commits suicide at the end.
No, really.
I am definitely not clicking the link.
Ugh, now I feel bad about making a joke.
Whelp, shoulda used a VPN for that gem…..
The Outsiders.
My friends made fun of me because we watched it in school, and I was voluntarily partaking in something that school made us do, therefore I was a dork. Believe me, nobody was more anti-school than me, but that was a good movie. Plus, I like ’50s greaser culture.
That movie has everybody in it.
I believe Tom Waits was in it as one of th Socshes.
He had one scene as Buck Merrill, a bartender friend of Dally’s.
Yes that’s right. How could he play a teenager.
Great book.
I saw GATTACA in school and loved it. I wonder if it’d still hold up.
Cabin Boy.
“Would you like to buy a monkey?”
Good one:
“Kid, we’re just here to catch fish and stink. Mostly the latter.”
“his tubes are clean!”
THE PIPES ARE CLEAN!
THAT…..I was close
And I shall return… a cabin MAN!
Oh! Did anybody else see Robot Jox? I loved that movie as a kid and watched again as an adult and still liked it.
The Party Animal, best coming of age movie evah.
Seasonal – The Hebrew Hammer. A (((them))) blaxploitation classic
Just Because- Captain Ron
Cold War- Red Dawn (The original only)
Get hammered with SF types- The Green Berets. Who can top the Duke parachuting without hooking up his static line or the Sun setting in the east?
How could I forget “Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS”.
How about this review? The Independent Film Journal wrote, “Only the most dangerously sadistic mentalities will manage to sit voluntarily through more than ten minutes of Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS, a graphic, stomach-churning catalogue of Nazi medical atrocities that makes Texas Chainsaw Massacre look like a Sunday picnic … Theatres catering to the lowest possible grade of audience could make a bundle of dirty money. Others would be wise to forget it.
Yes it is that bad.
Quigley Down Under
Some people were born in the wrong time. I was born on the wrong continent.
*uh ha*
Good choice!
I haven’t seen that in years! Might have to see if it’s streaming somewhere.
50’s hot rod/juvenile delinquent movies. The really bad ones can be good. Love the cars and they were really low budget so they’ were shot on the streets of SoCal. The 50’s Calif I grew up in.
Pisses the wife off as the family “Recommended for You” list is full of things like “Hot Rod Girl”, “Hot Rod Girls Save the World”and”hot rods to hell”.
Best is “The Giant Gila Monster”. A lot of cool cars and a real Gila Monster lizard trashes an HO train layout.
Robert Rodriguez put out a retro one called “Road Racers” a few years back. I’m guessing it was DTV, but it was on sale on blu-ray at Best Buy – worth a watch.
Black Dynamite
No way can Black Dynamite be a guilty pleasure. It’s one of the best made comedy film ever.
Everything they were trying to accomplish they knocked out of the park. Riffing on blaxploitation movies isn’t necessarily an easy task.
/now off soapbox
Maximum Fucking Overdrive.
I heard Steven King was so coked out of his mind he didn’t remember directing it.
LOL. I don’t doubt it. I had read the short story and it was so godawful I refused to ever watch the movie. I didn’t know he directed it.
I think it was the first movie he ever directed
Oh God, there were others?!
Just checked. It’s the only one he directed.
#metoo
He doesn’t seem like the kind of guy that does coke.
I love that movie. However, a big part of that comes from the fact that the greatest musical group EVER did the soundtrack.
Impossible! Bon Scott was compost long before that abortion came out.
Also, the Brian Johnson AC/DC ain’t real AC/DC dig aside, AC/DC isn’t the greatest Rock and Roll group ever, The Kinks are.
Correct.
I like Burn Hollywood Burn. Which some people think is one of the worst movies ever.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118577/
(Also, “one of the worst” seems rather odd idiom.)
Tango & Cash.
You broke that jaw?
The Dark Backward.
I always thought The Fifth Element was a guilty pleasure but it seems a lot of other people actually like it too.
I love the 5th Element.
Multipass
That movie was kind of ruined for me because I had an unrelated traumatic experience while it was on TV.
My kids love it…and I still will not change it if on.
Nothing with Gary Oldman is a guilty pleasure. Just pleasure.
True.
Including one of my favorites, The Book of Eli (bonus: Denzel Washington)
Eli was a good film. Just enough for you to say…hmm…
I agree, and yet his character is the one I can’t stand in that movie (yes, more than Chris Tucker’s.)
SLC Punk
Saw it in the theater. I thought it was OK but not something I need to see again.
Its better with a solid alcohol buzz
That’s a good one. Love Matthew Lillards character and Herion Bob
Hudson Hawk
I also like The Devil’s Rain. It has William Shatner and John Travolta, but what makes the film is the performance from Ernest Borgnine. He plays the leader of a Satanic cult with such enthusiasm, it’s infectious how much he enjoys acting.
Guilty pleasure? Mary Poppins. That is because it reminds me of my grandma and truly has a good message I believe.
I think Poppins passes the “good movie” (despite Dick Van Dyke’s accent) test.
I think the cockney is about right for over the top accents
Guys & Dolls
I love it in disaster movies when something destroys places I know well. Like in 2012 when Koko Head erupts again on Oahu, BEST SCENE.
Though my favorite is still VOLCANO, when they send lava right past my house and boil the tarpits. Greatness.
Also in Independence Day when the dumbshits are on top of the library tower with their “WE LURVE YOU ALIENS!!” signs and then the aliens obliterate them.
“Day after Tomorrow”. Some fun effects, but any text/dialog/plot is mind-gratingly bad.
Just saw that Cohen got 3 years. Not a great lawyer, eh?
I think navigating the business world and Trumps dealings he probably was slimy enough…step into the political world and you learn a new level of fuckery that gets you 3 years
Joe vs the Volcano
Miss Congeniality
Army of Darkness
#3 is legit good. The other two are enjoyable.
Especially the opening scenes of Joe vs. The Volcano.
The opening J vs V perfectly captures the soul sucking environment of a dead-end job.
The luggage salesman and chauffeur are great characters.
Every time is see that movie, I catch another little reference or underlying theme.
Music is great too.
“Good. Bad. I’m the guy with the gun.”
This…is my BOOMSTICK!
For a long time my bedtime pass out movie was Spaceballs or Office Space
My boss nailed Office Space. “The first half is the greatest movie ever.”
Blues Brothers
Another legit good movie.
To me, a guilty pleasure is a generally agreed-upon bad movie that you just enjoy watching.
No guilt. Best movie ever
“Our Lady of Blessed Acceleration don’t fail us now “
No guilt, just want to plug Fubar: Balls to the Wall. It’s a Christmas classic.
Cali wanting to tax text messages…I’m on phone and too lazy to link. WtF?
Here, let me.
Why do you hate The Poor?
“Our hands are tied. What’re you gonna do.”
Thank you Rhy…it just baffles me. If Verizon or ATT want to charge me…so be it. I will find another carrier, but a government excise on the service to launder money just irks me.
Not an excise but really, that is what it is. How would they tax it? By area code? I have California numbers but since moved from there. I have two numbers that are area codes in Cali for two purposes…one is an old number and the other my kid wanted it since it was where he grew up.
I’m am so glad I left that awful state.
Look, your emails and text messages don’t monitor themselves. That shit costs time and money. It’s gotta come from somewhere.
Do the poor not text?
If any of those shlocky Val Kilmer action movies from the mid 90’s came on the telly I wouldn’t change the channel.
I feel guilty about nothing. But I’m a sucker for cheesy movies. Anyone else see Gymkata? Where the government needs a covert operative, so they train an Olympic gymnast in martial arts?
Kurt Thomas LOL – I would have bet the farm that was going to be some tiny female knocking down bad guys like bowling pins.
Every fight location has parallel bars or a pummel horse
Yep.
Oh god yes.
Brutals, I am disappoint.
Gotta be Eating Raoul.
“Amazing what you can do with a cheap piece of meat.”
+1 “Trail mix?”
“IT WAS A JOKE, OK?!”
I mentioned this above, but for those into messy violence, Takashi Miike movies are often good. I watched a bunch of his stuff right after the millennium, then the gore got to be too much.
If you like violent gore, I’d definitely rec Ichi the Killer and Audition, though. Just be prepared, though.
Strike one of those ‘thoughs’. thx
Then there is Robot Ninja, where a comic book gets turned into a TV show and the artist doesn’t think it’s true to the character, so he pretends to be the character to stop a gang of lesbians (This is a real movie).
Beast master, Ghost Rider, Commando, every Jean Claude Van Dam movie after the first one.
I love that in Commando they named Arnold’s kid Jenny so that he repeatedly screamed “Chenny!” Throughout the movie.
It’s nut a toomuh!
That’s how we knew he was a real American.
Beast master was great. Clash of the Titans, too.
Jack and Jill. Only for the Al Pacino bits and one of the the best ending musical numbers to any movie ever.
Oh another one
The Underworld series
Far more entertaining than that other vampire series.
Then there is GI Bro, which was an Italian movie WWII that was made like a spaghetti western, originally released as ‘Inglorious Bastards’ but was later recut to focus on Fred Williamson’s character and renamed GI Bro. The GI Bro cut is hilarious, because as I said it was recut to change the narative.
Second link regarding the GI Bro cut got lost.
Then of course is my obligatory ‘S-Club 7: Seeing Double‘ late night reference to S-Club 7.
It is hard to say… I can never do this favorite thing, I don’t have a favorite book, a favorite good movie, a favorite place etc.
Guilty pleasures… I don’t have many I usually don’t feel guilty… hmmmm
I remember I liked “The parent trap” the Lindsay Lohan version that counts as real guilty. Also Bedazzled the Brendan Fraser version (or better said the Elizabeth Hurley version)
So movies you masturbated to.
Exactly.
I watched them in a wholesome fashion
Birth of a Nation and How Stella Got Her Tube Packed.
Honestly though, Toy Story 3 squeezed some sludge from my decade dormant tear ducts.
The second one has got to be porn.
Reese Witherspoon. Kiefer Sutherland. Executive produce Oliver Stone. A twisted re-imagining of Little Red Riding Hood.
Freeway.
My lord that looks awful.
All I got was “Not Available.” Logically or Emotionally?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6B1oZS06zQ
Somewhere btw 2.5 and 4 out of 10. You’re not playing the game right.
#metoo
I share a part of myself with you people and this is what I get.
Cannon (well, Golan-Globus) made a version of Little Red Riding Hood with Craig T. Nelson in the cast.
I love that movie.
Finishing work early on a Friday afternoon is better than (some) sex.
https://imgur.com/a/R2pZ9V9
Wrong pic. Oops. Basically same thing though.
Who are the greatest husband and wife comedy teams? The first two that come to mind are George Burns + Gracie Allen and Jerry Stiller + Ann Meara.
Oh, Desi and Lucille. Duh.
Tammy Faye and Jim.
Well, one that no one is going to pick:
Fletch Lives
OK, a second:
Honky Tonk Freeway
Honorable mention:
Looker
?? Honky Tonk Freeway
And….I actually own it on Amazon.
It really is a lot of 70’s/80’s fun.
Well, this has been amusing. I think I’ve found many “Hey, let’s drink way too much and watch a movie!” contenders.
Thanks for playing, Glibs!
Enjoy your JCVD marathon.
SP and I thoroughly enjoyed Another 48 Hours. But that was because we know the guy who played the psychopathic biker killer (IRL, he’s an absolute sweetheart). Through the whole movie, every time he’d kill someone, SP would deadpan, “Nice shot, David.” At the end when he gets killed, she deadpanned, “Bye, David.”
That reminded me – don’t care about it now, but in 7th Grade – I think I watched “Sidekicks” at least twice, maybe 3 times in the theaters when I was in the Philippines. Might have been a slow month or something…but I seem to recall enjoying that flick a lot at the time. Even weirder since I don’t think I’d seen any of the Chuck Norris flicks referenced in it previously (or since).
Guilty pleasures- Lifetime movies (though the quality has been going down in recent years) and Hallmark type Christmas movies. Speaking of Xmas movies, Love, Actually. One of my holiday favorites that I love to rewatch this time every year (along with Blackadder’s Christmas Carol, White Christmas, Christmas in Connecticut, Elf, Die Hard, and The Holiday). Fantastic cast.
Blood In, Blood Out and Straight To Hell.
VATOS LOCOS!
The Eiger Sanction
Red Dawn
The Eiger Sanction was awesome. Loved the Archer spoof as well.
It got bad reviews and was controversial because a couple climbers really did die (or Clint sanctioned them) during the filming. I love it too and it looks great in HD.
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
It’s because of the unwritten book of the road.
Guilt?
Imagine 10,000 years ago a large fire with a whole tribe gathered round at night. The children are all seated together while an old man tells them a story. There is lots of oohing and aaaahing from the children as he waves his arms and uses his hands to make shadows on the nearest hut wall to add to his story telling. Now fast foreword to the middle ages. There is a miniature stage with the old man standing to the side telling a story while little cartoon-like puppets act out the story. Same kids, same oohing, aaaahing and laughing. Fast foreword to the 19th century. A full sized stage with actors telling the story, each one playing a part. Fast foreword to today. You are in your living room with a bowl of popcorn watching…say…Jaws…on your TV. Brody, St. George, whatever you name him is in the fight for his life and the world depends on him.
Movies are no different really than the old man 10,000 years ago. They are just telling a story with visual aids. It isnt about the rubber fish. It isnt about the unrealistic aspects of any of the visual aids. It is about the story. That is what movies are to me. Does it illustrate the human condition? Does the story define courage or cowardice? Man against man, Man against nature, Man against himself…all of them are about how individuals overcome adversity.
Good morning everyone.
I am definitely in the no-guilt camp – I have nothing that I am embarrassed/guilty about in my movie collection. I have had some question my selection though, especially the number of “chick flick” movies that I own. One guy actually made fun of me once, but it didn’t bother me.
Several weeks later the same guy asked what I was doing at the weekend. Told him that I was having a chick flick night at my apartment, and he once again made fun of me. I then pointed out that I would be sitting around my apartment with a bunch of single females, watching sappy romantic movies, drinking boat drinks, and eating some spectacular food I made. He thought about it for a minute, then asked who would be there. I pointed out 4 girls from the office (one of which he was trying to chat up for months). He then suddenly saw the light and asked if he could attend as well.
Of course not.
And I ended up dating the girl he had his eye on (and one of the others as well, one after the other, not concurrently – did that once, and it was more hassle than it was worth, especially when I ended up on a date with both of them at the same time).
