Saturday Night Open Post & Coming Attractions

Well, Thanksgiving has come and gone, and now we are hard into the shopping festive season. I hate shopping forced consumerism festivities so much. Online shopping was a gift, invented for me alone. But, I don’t mind if the rest of you partake. And, apparently, you are.

Yesterday, I had to go to a CVS Minute Clinic (a topic for another time) for the next injections in two series of immunizations. (Some of you may recall the healthcare program in which I’m trying to enroll. Still trying.) This particular Minute Clinic happens to be housed in a Target near-ish our place. My appointment was (stupidly) scheduled (by me) for Black Friday. At 1500. At Target.

I left the house super early, figuring I might need to park 5 miles away and walk in. I arrived super early. To an empty parking lot. I parked in the center section. Directly in front of the doors. In the second space.

THANK YOU, JEFF BEZOS.

Wait, what? What’s happening on the website next week? Oh, right.

After catching you up on the minutiae of my life, I’m pressed for time this evening, so I’m afraid you’re just getting writers’ names, not attached to days. You’re going to be here every day anyway, amirite?

Links by: Sloopy, OMWC, Brett L. Assorted rap…scallions and badly formed stone sculpture. Perhaps others. Not necessarily in that order.

Regular features by: Not Adahn (even when he’s traveling, he’s a professional!); mexicansharpshooter; Web Dom; SP; SugarFree, if you’re very, very good. And also, What Are We Reading.

Special features from: Nephilium; PieInTheSky; Jarflax; banginglc1; Yusef Drives a Kia; Kinnath; and trshmnstr.

Another great week!

There are a bunch of posts languishing in draft stage. If you are the writer of one of the orphaned posts, do your fellow Glibs a solid and finish them up! We want to hear from you.

Also, if you think you might want to be on the Contributing Writers page, here’s how. The Glibertarians community relies on Glib-sourced posts, for which we are grateful. After all, there needs to be some post to ignore to provide you with a comment section.

And, speaking of comments… take it away, Saturday Night Open Post!

Im looking forward to someone hitting that mother-fkin’ THEME MUSIC !

    1. Count Potato

I wonder how many of those 4M views were for sampling.

    2. BakedPenguin

My expectations were pretty low when I saw the title, but that was actually cool.

  2. CPRM

I’m looking forward to not clicking Tres’ theme music links. I wouldn’t have this opportunity to not do something if it weren’t for Glibs, and for that I thank me.

    1. Tres Cool

      that’s meta af, yo

      1. CPRM

        I’m, like, a smart person.

        1. Sean

          A stable genius?

          1. CPRM

The best! The most stable! Genius!

          2. MikeS

Stable genius?! What a bunch of horse shit.

          3. Akira

Sheesh, I wish you guys would put these horrible puns out to pasture.

  3. westernsloper

Over the last some days I have binged watched Narcos mexico. I enjoyed it.

    1. R C Dean

      #metoo. Good stuff.

I have a BIF post finitoed whenever is convenient.

      1. mexican sharpshooter

        Glad you mentioned it!

I do plan to roll with everyone’s reviews next week. If you have not sent yours in to Nephilium, or sent it in on your own, please do so by—lets make it Wednesday.

I’ll make it your call…should I combine them or just do multiple posts over next Saturday?

This is democracy in action, gentleman. Let me know.

        1. Lackadaisical

Mine is kind of short, so it might be better suited to combination.

          1. commodious spittoon

DON’T ANY OF YOU PEOPLE SLEEP?!

          2. Lackadaisical

Yes, from ~10 PM until 5:30 or so. Although I stayed up late and slept in today.

  4. kinnath

Just popped open a 750 ml bottle of Tangerine Dream, so this will keep me happy the rest of the night.

    1. CPRM

Tangerine Sky, for Yusef, wherever his KIA is.

      1. Yusef drives a Kia

I’ve been sleeping since Thursday, I’m real sick, waiting for Monday appt

        1. DEG

Yuck. Sorry to hear. I hope everything works out.

    2. Count Potato

“NW style sour ale aged in rum barrels for 20 months with tangerine zest, then blended with Cascase Apricot Ale”

      Is it good?

      1. kinnath

I am drinking the 2015 version.

From the label: Last produced in 2011, this extremely limited release is a blend of quad and blonde ales aged in bourbon and wine barrels for up to 18 months with tangerine zest, mandarin zest, apricots, and vanilla beans. Rich and complex, Tangerine Dream captures flavors of fresh tangerines, bourbon, vanilla, and toasted malts.

I think its fucking awesome. One of the best I have had from Cascade Brewing.

I got two bottles of the 2015. I shared one, but I am keeping the last one for me. 😉

    3. Nephilium

I’m on the end of a 500 ml bottle of this. The girlfriend was not a fan, so the majority of the bottle came to me.

      1. kinnath

Sounds interesting. Is it a mead?

        1. Nephilium

It is. They make a lot of out there flavors, but only three are made year round. Most of their meads are in the 6% range, with a couple of barrel aged ones and some still ones up in the 12-15%.

          1. kinnath

I am really glad to see people making session meads.

About half the mead I make now is under 10% ABV and will be kegged or bottle conditioned.

          2. Nephilium

I’d say that most of their session meads would qualify as petulant. Nice people, who are looking to expand their production in the next year. Quite a few of their names would cause Swiss to narrow his gaze. But who wouldn’t want a Magnum Peach Inferno, or Baklava to the Future?

          3. kinnath

I have good friends that run a meadery in Iowa. They are moving production from wine-strength still meads to slightly carbonated session meads. It’s helping their business.

There is a good chance I will traveling through Ohio next August. I would love to visit the best meaderies in your neck of the woods.

          4. Nephilium

Let me know where about in Ohio you’ll be heading, and I’ll provide some recommendations and warnings.

          5. kinnath

I-80. Breezing through on my way to and from Pennsylvania.

          6. Nephilium

It’ll be a slight detour but the BottleHouse in Cleveland Heights would be a good one to hit up.

Crafted (points at the link above) is closer to Kent/Akron then Cleveland, but could be an interesting stop. The problem there is very limited hours that they’re open. Crafted distributes to most of the better grocery stores and liquor stores in the Cleveland area.

If you want to make a consolidated side trip, in Lakewood there’s another BottleHouse location as well as a Griffin Cider House. However, it looks like they’ve lost their original domain and are running just on Facebook now.

For a brewery that does lots of sours (and has a sour facility they’re bringing online in the next couple of months), you’ve got Platform brewing. This is also widely distributed and available at their facility on the near West Side of Cleveland.

          7. kinnath

Thanks. I will check with you next summer.

    4. Sean

I saw your knife purchase post the other day…baller. ?

      1. kinnath

        For those that missed it.

        https://www.arizonacustomknives.com/1151-tuxedo-damascus-brend-auto-1-4of15-1006422.html

It’s a collector’s item. I’ll probably have to buy a real knife to carry.

        1. Count Potato

          Wow, that’s one expensive knife.

          1. kinnath

I looked up the guy that makes the damascus steel. The bar that went into that knife was about half of the cost of the knife.

          2. Given the amount of work required in making pattern-welded billets, that’s no surprise.

          3. kinnath

I am a sucker for Damascus steel.

        2. DEG

          That looks nice.

        3. Spudalicious

          That is pretty.

          1. kinnath

They have a gorgeous Protech Godfather there that was actually a hundred buck cheaper.

But is pretty obvious when you are carrying a stiletto that it has only one intended purpose.

          2. Spudalicious

Lol! That is true. You’re not trimming your nails.

          3. kinnath

            I almost bought this knife.

            https://www.arizonacustomknives.com/knives-by-maker/pro-tech-knives/1012832.html

If I get drunk enough tonight, I just may order it. 😉

          4. Gustave Lytton

            That’s a nice letter opener!

        4. R C Dean

          Beautiful piece of work.

        5. Tejicano

          Really cool!

I love damascus steel. I have one heirloom quality knife. The blade is Swedish steel damascus. Scales are aged giraffe bone. I custom ordered it from a master bladesmith in S. Africa.

          1. CPRM

Sorry to have to geography this to you, but neither Sweden nor S Africa are near Damascus. (I know, I know, it refers to blend of the steal, but I make jokes)

        6. Heroic Mulatto

          Nice!

        7. Luther Baldwin

Gorgeous. I can’t imagine using it.

          1. kinnath

Reality set in this morning. I am probably going to buy a practical version of this knife for real life.

          2. SP

No. A beautiful knife is a delight to use. Do not make the mistake so many people do and not use the “good” stuff. It’s meant to be used and enjoyed. Don’t deny the purpose for which it was intended.

            /old lady advice

          3. kinnath

This really is a collector’s pieced #4 of 15. Someone clearly bought it as an investment and is selling it at a profit.

Part of me says that I should hold it and make money in the future.

The rest of me says “fuck that”. I’m going to carry it.

          4. kinnath

Actually, it’s being sold by the maker. So they’ve held on to it for a while.

        8. mexican sharpshooter

          Wow

      1. kinnath

        Goes well with the booze.

      2. Luther Baldwin

Too bad they started sucking right around the time I got to concert-going age. But at least I have a couple dozen albums of awesomeness to enjoy.

    1. CPRM

I can’t even, the audio is to bad. Seriously, record it on your damn $500 phone without an external mic and it will sound better. (Sorry, I get really upset over poor video quality)

      1. Rebel Scum

I get really upset over poor video quality

Does’t seem that bad to me.

      2. Count Potato

Sounds OK to me. All YouTube has is crappy sound quality.

        1. Count Potato

Although, Gilmore pointed how you can download better quality.

      3. CPRM

Hurumph, I work in both video and audio, I spend hours re-recording audio that sounds better than this for no profit. It irks me on the same level as a video of a cat humping a cactus getting more views than an Orson Welles movie gets .

    2. Heroic Mulatto

      I don’t get it.

Are they making fun of hipsters or “fags”?

Or do they just think all hipsters are gay? Or all gays are hipsters?

      1. Chafed

        Both?

        1. Brochettaward

The answer was clearly all of the above. Jesus.

  5. Spudalicious

    Oh, ffs.

    http://www.jacksonfreepress.com/news/2018/nov/23/hyde-smith-attended-all-white-seg-academy-avoid-in/

A long read. Basically, 43 effing years ago, her parents sent her to high school at a “segregation academy”, so obviously she’s a racist.

    1. DEG

I like they tie public hangings to lynchings only especially given Mississippi’s method of execution was hanging up until about 1940.

    2. Luther Baldwin

Link doesn’t work but 43 years ago, that described nearly every suburban school in America.

      1. Spudalicious

Works for me. I’m shocked, shocked I tell you that Mississippi was fighting against integration in the ‘70s.

        1. CPRM

But I bet you and OMWC were volunteering to ‘integrate’ all those young girls.

        2. Luther Baldwin

Feh, it works now. Wayyyy TL;DR but I stand by my claim. You know what else “coincidentally” happened during the 1950s? The movement of millions of mostly wypipo to the burbs. The left has been trying to pin that on racism my entire life and in my younger days I bought it but now it’s quite clear to me that things are more complicated than the media will ever admit.

          1. CPRM

In the multiple times I read “Raisin In The Sun” in school, you know what was never brought up? Government authority. Nope, Wypipo just somehow kept the black man down, without ever using the government.

          2. Akira

Some people have an amazing knack for blaming private actors even when the government is clearly to blame.

At Thanksgiving, a relative went on a rant about how he got hassled at Wal-Mart over his ID because he was trying to buy alcohol while accompanied by two young-looking people who didn’t have ID on them. Even though he’s obviously over 21, the clerk wouldn’t sell it to him under suspicion that he was buying it for the other people.

He said, “Fucking Wal-Mart, I had to go to this dinner party empty handed because of them!” I tried so hard to explain to him that it’s probably not Wal-Mart’s decision (why would they decline a potential sale?) and that the cops regularly set up sting operations where they try to get clerks to sell alcohol to someone without checking ID, not to mention that the person working the register probably doesn’t want to risk their job.

Couldn’t bring him around. He still blames Wal-Mart. He believes that Wal-Mart is a greedy corporation that will sink to any moral low just to make a buck, yet they arbitrarily refuse to sell things to people just to be jerks.

          3. Luther Baldwin

the cops regularly set up sting operations where they try to get clerks to sell alcohol to someone without checking ID

I have been the victim of this. Got a stern talking-to from my loser manager for it. Call it an early (ca. 1992) libertarian moment.

It’s really ok if you like penis, we won’t judge you. It would be a lot less work than keeping up this persona, for your own health.

      1. Count Potato

That’s not how set theory works.

      2. AlmightyJB

I like my penis. It’s the best.

        1. CPRM

I’m just saying, Q might like your penis more than you do. It’s weather or not you’re OK with that.

This afternoon I was catching up on Tom Woods podcast. This episode had me wondering if Mance Rayder is one of you fuckers.

      1. CPRM

Red beard, check. Against the wall? Depends how it’s funded. Working with giants? No fucking way! They steal your popcorn and eat all your skittles!

      2. Heroic Mulatto

Despite appearing on the Tom Woods Show, Mance is not yokel-y enough to be one of the regulars.

  8. DEG

I’ve finished Gun Penance for the night, so time for a beer.

Penance? I was going to get my 03A3 ready for shooting tomorrow assuming the rain isn’t that bad. While doing that, I inspected some of my other rifles. I discovered the bore of one of my rare Lee-Enfields was full of rust. After about two hours or so of cleaning, no more rust. I double checked with the bore scope. Badly pitted bore, but it was badly pitted when I bought it. No more rust.

I went through all the other rifles. A couple pretty thoroughly (cleaning patches, borescope), others I just looked down the bore. A few I discovered weren’t as clean as I thought they were, but no rust. There are two I was concerned about, the rest I think are in good shape and have no rust. One or those I was concerned about was a false alarm. The other I will take care of tomorrow in between cleaning the whole lot.

The false alarm was my Mosin-Nagant 91/38. The auction house I bought it from said the bore was full of dried cosmoline. When I inspected it before I bid, I agreed. When I picked it up after winning it, I double checked, and I still agreed with them. When I looked tonight, I said to myself, “Dumbass, that’s not dried cosmoline, that’s rust!” I started cleaning it. Nope, the auction house was right. It’s dried cosmoline. I’ll clean it more thoroughly later.

  9. An article I really need “Tips for writers – reintroducing characters in a sequel without boring the audience”

    1. Count Potato

“Write interesting characters in the first place.”

      1. That wasn’t the issue.

I had six named characters in the opening scene (because it picks up immediately at the end of the previous book)

      2. Tres Cool

Seemed to work for Ian Fleming

    2. CPRM

Do a fakeout. Start off with one character, then he dies and his cousin (the character from the other story) comes to avenge him!

    3. Luther Baldwin

I tend to read series all at once (I will wait for the writer to finish it, or more likely, I just won’t find it until it’s already complete) and I do find that “rehash” thing that seems mandatory at the beginning of the 2nd and every following entry to be kind of tedious. My advice? Do what some writers do and put the rehash into a separate prolog.

      1. A lot of people don’t wait for the author to croak and no longer have new volumes.

Also, any book can be a reader’s first. People don’t always start with the start of a series. Each volume must stand on its own, which includes letting people unserstand who these characters are.

        1. Luther Baldwin

Well, I’m not a crazy person, so I like to read a series in order.

But fine… people are unpredictable. My prolog idea solves that without pissing off your regulars.

          1. You’re here, that’s a point against your claim of not being crazy.

        2. kinnath

I picked up a book from Terry Pratchettt when I was heading out on a business trip.

I enjoyed the book so I looked up what else he had written.

I started at the beginning, and it took me 20 books to get back to the first one I read. And it was different knowing all the other books first.

    4. Trigger Hippie

The secret to reintroducing characters is to do so incrementally over three hundred pages while boring the reader with every fucking detail of every item in a room set in the present as the character reflects upon the events that led them to this situation.

          2. CPRM

        2. DEG

          Slightly, not fully.

          1. Tres Cool

            At least it wasn’t “supersonic”

          2. Did you mean Semisonic and “Closing Time”, or actually Supersonic? I’m surprised anybody else remembers the latter.

I’m surprised how soft the mastering is. Although that could be YouTube’s crappy sound fidelity.

poor Johnny Wadd went to Haiti and got the shitty end of the stick….

  11. Rebel Scum

I put the Christmas tree up tonight. It took a full 5 minutes before one of my cats climbed up the trunk and planted herself across a few branches with the intention and attempt of climbing around and playing. It was the younger of the two. She is tiny (albeit full-grown) and adorable, but I think I am going to come home to a toppled tree more than once between now and when i take it down.

    1. Gotta love cats.

      1. Luther Baldwin

And feed them, and clean up after them….

    2. Tie the tree to the wall.

        Ayn Rand Institute

They would be mad at our lack of “the USG needs to invade more countries!” sentiment.

          1. Winston

No but I am not surprised now that I do know.

  13. Is it technically price arbitrage if the buying and selling are not simulteneous?

    1. straffinrun

Maybe I missing something, but an arbitrage isn’t simultaneous buying and selling anyways. Just acting on the price differential between markets. Now you have me wondering why your’re asking in the first place.

      1. He’s got a Ponzi scheme in mind.

      2. straffinrun

Hey, I’m wrong. Just checked. Guess I should google first.

        1. straffinrun

From Wiki: “The transactions must occur simultaneously to avoid exposure to market risk, or the risk that prices may change on one market before both transactions are complete.”

      3. It was the phrasing of the dictionary definition.

I was thinking in terms of “Character in book is in land where the value of silver is different from home, thinks of how he can make use of this.”

        1. straffinrun

          Make a futures trade?

          1. No markets of that type in the setting. His voyage was the first from his homeland to this area in centuries.

          2. straffinrun

If you’re wondering if you can use the term “arbitrage” to describe a situation where he takes advantage of the price differential, I think it would be fine. An arbitrage technically isn’t simultaneous. It just means that there is no risk in, for example, the fraction of a second when the trade is being made. If there is no risk of price fluctuations or third party interference while the trade is being made, it would effectively be an arbitrage. Maybe call it that; effective arbitrage.

Fun Fact: the “Terrorists Have Won” was famously said about not cancelling the Oscars after 9/11. And said by the screenwriter of Dog Day Afternoon by the way.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/74th_Academy_Awards

Despite speculation and suggestions that the festivities be postponed or canceled, AMPAS President Pierson wrote in a Variety column refusing to take such action stating that it would send the message that “the terrorists have won”.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_terrorists_have_won

“We’re told to go on living our lives as usual, because to do otherwise is to let the terrorists win, and really, what would upset the Taliban more than a gay woman wearing a suit in front of a room full of Jews?”[5]

    Not woke Ellen.

    1. Tres Cool

Other fun fact: The War Against Terror = TWAT

      1. C. Anacreon

Back when there was still an airline called TWA, the joke was having a hot stewardess ask if you wanted TWA coffee or TWA tea.

        1. dbleagle

Guess that is why they tweaked the name to Global War on Terrorism. I like your version better. I would love to tell some folks “Yes, I was in in the TWAT.”

    THANK YOU, JEFF BEZOS.

    Except for WaPo.

You shouldn’t measure a man by his hobbies.

      1. Luther Baldwin

It baffles me that the man who runs one of the currently most fashionable companies to hate also runs one of the #resist movement’s central headquarters.

        1. Brochettaward

Progs like Bezos don’t want to have any responsibility of their own. They want the government to have the responsibility. So Bezos can act rationally in his own life because he supports good think. It’s not his job, but society’s/the governments to come in with the “free” healthcare and welfare package to supplement his low wages. It makes sense if you don’t really think about it.

          1. Luther Baldwin

It makes sense if you don’t really think about it.

Sometimes I ponder how much easier life would be if I just stopped thinking about shit.

      1. Luther Baldwin

Yeah but it got dramatically worse after he took over.

I think more of the commentariat blew their load over the collectible knife posted, anyway.

Yet another reason to hate college football – their bullshit targeting rule. Some college athlete threw a hit that would have been praised several years ago. Now he’s ejected and will be forced to sit out the first half of the bowl game.

  20. Brochettaward

The French right now are rioting over a tax. If we ignore everything else about them, they’re out-American’ing Americans. We’re losing to the French.

    1. Luther Baldwin

So it’s another day that ends in a “y” for France. I’ve heard that just as many of them are protesting his “austerity” measures as his crony green shit.

    2. Lackadaisical

      We’re losing to the French.

      Until they surrender.

My mother is visiting. I love her and am glad she’s here. However, she only wants to watch Law & Order or Blue Bloods and she doesn’t like my pets. Oh boy.

      1. Gustave Lytton

It’s a sad turn in Magnum’s career. The remake is even sadder.
