While we were doing our active shooter training, it occurred to me that the blade on that thing would make a brutal weapon (and it would – sharp as hell and heavy). I then replaced the nut holding the blade on with a wingnut so I could take it off in an emergency. The only downside is that the papercutter is on the diametrically opposite end of our offices from where I sit.

When we bought a new car in Florida they told us they do electronic car titles now. Seemed to make sense to me. One less stupid document to lose.
Trying to retitle that car in CO and they won’t accept my receipt for electronic title (that has all relevant title information) and they require an official paper title. Florida wants to charge me 70 bucks to send CO an electronic copy they wont accept and 80 bucks to change that electronic title into a paper title so CO can stamp it and destroy it and give me a new CO title.

Prepayment is not payment of a debt, so they are technically within their rights to refuse the cash. If you refuse to pay, park there, and are sent a bill later, that is a debt, for which they cannot refuse cash payment. Preferably in mixed change.
If memory serves, there was a court case about that. The court decision was that until you’ve entered into the contract by the exchange of goods or services, you don’t have a debt. Therefore, you could make it a condition of the sale that you would only accept payment in agreed upon means (credit, check, debit, etc.). I’ll let one of the lawerly ones enact my labor and find the case, as I’m finally getting out of work.

I’m going to mammoth a few times this year, and I’m trying to decide if it’s worth it to get a set now.
I don’t ever use chains myself; but I have really aggressive tires and 4 wheel drive so I’ve never felt it necessary or had a problem.
People I know that do use chains really only use if they’re driving at freeway speeds following a really big snowfall. I doubt you’ll need them.
I have a Lexus GX 460 (the GX and LX are a re-badged Toyota Land Cruisers) with all time 4WD and 18″ BF Goodrich KO2 all terrain tires. When the CHP implements chain control, I’m exempt from R1 and R2. I’ve never been in R3, but it’s pretty much Donner Party territory.
Mammoth isn’t really “mountain driving” other than the high altitude. It’s US highway 395.

I’ve never used chains. Just have some decent all-weather tires. If you’re driving through a major dump with lots of snow on the road, everyone will be driving pretty slowly so just go with the flow.
CA is pretty strict because people don’t know how to drive in snow. I’m probably going to have to carry some with me even if I don’t use them.
Call a Les Schwab on your route there about 1-2 weeks before you go up, and have them set aside a pair of quick fits in your tire size. Sometimes they run out if you just stop by. If you don’t use them, you can return them for a refund at the end of snow season.

Drive with Florida plates till you get pulled over. I had a customer from NC that kept his plates/expired tabs 7 years after moving to TX. Never got stopped for it. The car died before it was a legal issue.
I made it about a year and half in TX with expired Hawaii plates before some county mounties pulled me over. But, cheap as registration is in TX, and life threatening as any encounter with cops can be, most people just knuckle under and change the plates ASAP.
I had a similar issue with a small self-assembled trailer I bought to haul a motorcycle from Ohio to Arizona. Ohio doesn’t issue titles for vehicles that cost less than $500. And Arizona wouldn’t give me a license plate or a title without a title from Ohio. This was, apparently, because I couldn’t prove I had ever paid sales tax on it. Long story short, I ended up abandoning the trailer in the AZ DMV parking lot, and it is my sincere hope that some DMV peon had to fill out 50 fucking forms in order to move it, store it, or crush it.

“Brothers face $450,000 in penalties for removing trees from their property
CANTON TWP., MI — Brothers Gary and Matt Percy could face nearly half a million dollars in penalties for removing more than 1,400 trees from their property without permission from Canton Township.
The two own a 16-acre property off of Yost Road, east of Belleville Road in Canton Township with the intention of creating a Christmas tree farm on the plot, according to their attorney, Michael J. Pattwell.
The land was filled with “invasive plants like phragmites, buckthorn and autumn olive,” he said.
“Canton Tree Police showed up,” said Pattwell. “Canton Township’s tree removal ordinance prohibits landowners from removing trees from private property without government permission, which may be obtained by either payment into the township’s so-called tree fund or on-site replacement with trees of certain designated trunk diameters.”

Anyway John Tory was re-elected mayor of Toronto. I find it hilarious that this guy, the literal embodiment of white privilege in Canada, has gotten a pretty easy ride. Until 2014 his record was pretty much of failure. Lost the mayoralty in 2003, failed against in the 2007 provincial election, lost his seat to the former premier of Ontario, lost his bid to regain his seat in 2009. Oh and he ran the 1993 PC campaign that saw them go from 169 seats to just 2.
But he was lucky that he Rob Ford’s drug problems and then cancer followed by Olivia Chow stumbling so he won in 2014 and this time the Lefties on council didn’t challenge him and Faith Goldy was marginalized so he was re-elected.
That destruction was epic.

Probably has do with the progressive domination of our thought leaders. Conservatives and libertarian are exposed to alternative viewpoints all the time and have to live with that fact while progressives aren’t exposed to many alternative views.
That’s been my experience for years.
About 25 years ago, I remember listening to my mother’s side of the family – Pentecostals – debating about politics and history. They were pretty knowledgeable and extremely polite and civil towards some asshole lefty who was acting like a complete jackass. They were approaching it the discussion with respect and he was laughing in their faces.
Here’s the kicker: They weren’t saying anything remotely wrong or bad. He just disagreed with them. He just hated they were religious.

I dunno. I have clusters of people on both sides of the aisle who get really personally bent out of shape of minor disagreements on politics. It seems way less about ideological position and more about who they get their info from. The ones who are thoughtful and well-read want to have a conversation, understand the finer points of your argument and respond, but the ones who get their positions spoonfed by OccupyDemocrats of Praeger U. are the ones that get butthurt if you try to disagree with them because their knowledge is shallow and they *can’t* have that conversation with you without showing that they’re paper tigers.
I think you have to set aside the rabid partisans first. For many of them, politics is a blood sport. They’re goung to do everything they can to win.

The interesting question (okay, interesting is a stretch) is If you take the median conservative and the the median progressive off of the street and present them with an idea that is against their ideology, who is more likely to blow their gasket? In my experience, thats the prog. Even if you leave SoCons in the conservative camp, I think the garden variety prog still edges them out, ever so slightly, in getting from zero to triggered.

Coming up gay and conservative…later libertarian when I realized conservatives said small government things for funsies and then pushed for big government policies, with a pretty much 50/50 split on conservative and liberal social groups (but a very conservative family), my experience has been that conservatives (again I’m going by the contemporary standard definition that includes SoCons) give just as good as progressives (and after a big family event with three uncles, my mom and an aunt or two screaming at me about an inane minor political disagreement, I might say even better), but I’m probably violating the positions of conservatives on issues they are more passionate about than you are just by…you know, being me.

On a more serious note I think the difference is more that the progressives react with anger and attacks to a broader swath of disagreement. Conservatives, especially hard core socons tend to each have some hot button issue that will get them into as rage, but the sjw left seem to make every minor disagreement a war. Pie – not sure if you’ll see this, given the time difference, but I saw your post this morning about shoulder pain. I’ve been dealing with it recently, too. I generally only get in the weight room once-or-twice per week, but I stick to the core Starting Strength exercises (bench press, overhead press, squat, deadlift) + pull-ups and push-ups. The shoulder issue has made benching and push-ups a real pain. Interestingly enough, I can get through overhead press and pull-ups without pain. I’m equally skeptical of PT (*), but have started using those exercise band/tubes. I’m also trying to reincorporate swimming. The knee issue never actually prevented me from running, so this shoulder thing actually interrupting my normal workouts has been a drag.
(*) I’ve been dealing with a knee issue for close to a year-and-a-half, now, and I did a PT for a few months to seemingly no effect. At $75 per visit, I needed a little more visit-to-visit improvement to justify the cost. I grant that it’s possible I’m just stubborn or impatient. I play basketball regularly, so maybe it’s just something I’ll have to deal with.
Overhead press bothers my shoulder much less than bench press too. I’ve still been doing the bench press lately but never venture past 225.

The first half of the book was interesting because I have recently read The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury and I could see the Bradbury influence in Heinlein’s writing. I think Bradbury did it better. But I don’t think Heinlein was that far off of Bradbury’s level.
The second half of the book isnt really my cup of tea. Preachy is a word that comes to mind. It also feels completely disjointed from the first half. Same thing happened with the cat who walks through walls.

The carnie part is where I started losing interest. The religion part has seemed predictable and, frankly, a bit rushed.
Jubal’s pontificating was pretty well hemmed in for the first half of the book, but there were a few Randian monologues at the start of the second half. Granted, this is a book I haven’t finished yet so I reserve the right to change my opinion when things change on the next page.

Sounds great in theory, but the holster isn’t turning off the laser very well. If I apply pressure over the magnet, it will shut off. I’ll let it sit in the holster for a couple days and hope it molds better.

Also, I’m considering a custom kydex holster and epoxying a neodymium magnet to it for the activation/deactivation switch. I only have ~$100 into the whole laser system. I got lucky on a gunbroker auction.
Tommy Theis makes a great Kydex + leather holster. I’ve been using mine since 2013 with no issues whatsoever besides a broken belt clip (cheap to replace, and it was kind of my fault anyway).
