Wednesday Afternoon Links

Well, well, well, here we are on hump day and I’m not dead yet. Speaking of not dead yet, if you live on the Carolina coast, or inland from there prone to flooding, get the fuck out. Its going to be nasty by tomorrow morning. You’ll be waiting for the Cajun Navy to pick your ass up, with no power, hoping rapesquatches stay in their caves during floods.

FIrst of all, go read SF’s latest Hat & Hair if you haven’t yet.

It’s good to see Microsoft go back to their asshole roots. Bruh, Edge sucks. I mean, Chrome and Firefox also manage to suck almost as bad, but not quite.

Health officials warn of “chaos” if federal judge suspends the ACA. I got a semi just reading the headline.

There’s even hope for the Walter Pecks of the world now that man born without penis (XY sex chromomes) has member crafted from scratch.

Aww, sweetheart. Your soy-boy who was so big into affirmative consent was only using it to talk you into a one night stand? How sad. PUAs take note.

Chicago wants to get into the, uh, selective basic income subsidy* game.

*Several here have noted that all “universal basic income” programs have been neither universal nor enough to actually be a basic income substitute

  1. Okay Glibs, the Audiobook of Lucid Blue has just gone live!

I like the link above very much because it feeds my capitalist instincts very much. Aside from any sales it might drive, anyone who signs up for an audbile membership through it nets me more money. Of course if you don’t need an audiobook copy, feel free to send the link to someone who might.

Does Steve Smith make an appearance in your works?

STEVE SMITH NO BELIEVE IN DATE. HIM ALWAYS SAY: “WHY BUY MILK WHEN CAN RAPE COW FOR FREE?”

  2. I may be in the minority, but I think Edge is actually ok. On my PC at least, it runs faster than Firefox and Chrome. Fuck all three of them though. Opera FTW.

    1. Semi-Spartan Dad

      Any downsides to Opera?

      1. Aside from being Opera?

      2. The only one I can think of is that it’s just not as widely used, so plug-ins and extensions can be a little harder to find.

I find it runs faster, is more secure/private and also doesn’t carry all the woke, corporate SJW baggage that the others do.

        1. Semi-Spartan Dad

Thanks, I’ll have to check it out then

        2. jesse.in.mb

I thought current version of Opera were based on Chromium and are inter-operable with Chrome plugins.

          1. Michael

It is. You can install any Chrome extension in Opera, though you first need to install the extension that enables this.

    4. Any idea why only Chrome shows the download links for the audio files at All-India Radio? In the “Listen News” section on the right, Chrome has an option to download if you don’t want to do streaming audio. Neither Firefox nor Opera does.

      1. Chafed

I didn’t know All India Radio existed.

I tried it a while back on recommendation from Glib users, but could never get it to import my bookmarks so I ditched it. I should give it another shot.

        1. trshmnstr

I hated brave when I tried it. Buggy as hell.

          1. MikeS

Yeah, near as I could tell from the community forum, it not importing my bookmarks was a known bug.

What’s trending in The Atlantic, you ask? Why is college in America so expensive?

    https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2018/09/why-is-college-so-expensive-in-america/569884/

“Ultimately, college is expensive in the U.S. for the same reason MRIs are expensive: There is no central mechanism to control price increases. “Universities extract money from students because they can,” says Schleicher at the OECD. “It’s the inevitable outcome of an unregulated fee structure.””

    There’s more, including…

” “These are both sectors where consumers are too poorly informed and societal costs and benefits too great to leave decision-making entirely in the hands of individuals,” as Isabel Sawhill at the Brookings Institution has written.”

    1. Mad Scientist

Um, there IS a central mechanism to control prices and THAT IS WHY it is expensive. The central mechanism is controlling SUPPLY and it is also goosing DEMAND.

The idea that there is no central mechanism is absurd.

What’s trending in The Atlantic, you ask?

      LOL good one

    7. Stinky Wizzleteats

No more govt subsidized student loans. Walla, problem solved!

    8. I’ve stated this a bunch of times, but I figured what was driving prices up back when I was a freshman.

We had to fill out a financial aid form, and after that the college determined how much the family could pay, with the rest made up of grants/scholarships/loans. It very quickly occurred to me that if there were more money in financial aid available, the college would still be able to say we could afford to pay the same amount, and the new money would just be added on top of the aid we were already getting, resulting in higher prices.

    9. MikeS

Is there a libertarian argument for waging catastrophic war with China in defense of Taiwan? Even that extreme aside, is there truly a great advantage to America in continuing to insert ourselves into the situation between China and Taiwan?

    The Failure to Help Taiwan
    https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-failure-to-help-taiwan-1536707341

Moves to engage Taiwan or bolster its defense may cause fireworks in Beijing, but that is because Beijing has learned that its threats work. Li Kexin, then a counsellor at the Chinese Embassy in Washington, last December responded to a proposal for U.S. Navy port calls to Taiwan: “The day that a U.S. Navy vessel arrives in Kaohsiung is the day that our People’s Liberation Army unifies Taiwan with military force.” The U.S. shelved the idea, and Beijing promoted Mr. Li to deputy chief of mission.

The WSJ has a continual warboner for militarily engaging China over Taiwan. I’m not seeing that Taiwan is worth starting WW3 over, but I’m also not well versed on the topic.

    1. invisible finger

Bullying is its own reward, when you’re the bully. And in this case it’s two bullies pretending they aren’t colluding.

    2. Stinky Wizzleteats

Selling Taiwan down the river to Red China would be a terrible thing to do. On the other hand, not selling Taiwan down the river to Red China would be a terrible thing to do if they got really insistent.

    3. Bobarian LMD

      Is there a libertarian argument?

Only if you believe that an unfettered China will necessarily lead to a more catastrophic war in the future.

But you probably have to have a lot of un-libertarian beliefs to get there.

    4. Rhywun

I have a feeling Taiwan is doomed. There is not a chance in hell we’re going to defend it when the day comes that China wants it back in the fold. The only question is when will that day come. I’m kind of surprised it hasn’t happened already.

      1. Semi-Spartan Dad

Yea, the article also noted only 17 countries currently recognize Taiwan and several of those are wavering.

      2. Drake

I wouldn’t be surprised if Taiwan starts throwing nukes. They really don’t want to be conquered by commies.

        1. A Leap at the Wheel

          *shakes fist at Drake*

      3. A Leap at the Wheel

Based only on China’s actions, I am 100% convinced that Taiwan has a nuke. I don’t know when they got it, or where they got it from, or if they made it themselves, or what. But I think China knows they aren’t getting Taiwan without losing a major city.

How do you say “Hello good sir, I am writing to you today to let you know that I am no longer associated with the KGB and that I have transitioned to an exciting new position with Broken Arrow Inc, because are all good capitalists now,” in Taiwanese?

          5. Spudalicious

            Slim Pickens?

        2. Rhywun

No idea, but that would explain China’s hesitation better than any fears of reprisals from the US or others that I think everyone knows isn’t coming.

    5. A Leap at the Wheel

Is there a libertarian argument for waging catastrophic war with China in defense of Taiwan?

Yes, I think so. I buy into Bastiat’s conception of the state, in which the state is justified in an action if the individual citizens of the state would be justified in an action. Here, we know that a single citizen Albert would be justified if they chose to defend Tim from a physical attack by Charlie. Therefore, we could say that the union of citizen in America would be justified if they chose to defend a citizen of Taiwan from a physical attack citizen of Charlie. (But that doesn’t extent to mean American can go shoot Chinese citizens who aren’t involved in the attack or the command structure that chose to initiate the attack.)

There is no *requirement* that the US defend the citizens of Taiwan, only that they would be justified if they did chose to do so (assuming they stay in their lane, which is a hard thing to do in war.)

Even that extreme aside, is there truly a great advantage to America in continuing to insert ourselves into the situation between China and Taiwan?

Not likely. This sounds like a “yes you can, no you shouldn’t” type of deals.

      1. Semi-Spartan Dad

I completely see it falling within the NAP justification for defending Taiwan, but I was thinking in terms of using American resources, both treasure and blood, to do so.

        1. A Leap at the Wheel

That depends on your theory of the state and the particulars of the intervention. Its hypothetically possible that an all-volunteer expeditionary force could take action as part of an agreement for full reimbursement.

Less likely than the first live birth of a spherical cow or winged pig, but hypothetically possible.

          1. Semi-Spartan Dad

Its hypothetically possible that an all-volunteer expeditionary force could take action as part of an agreement for full reimbursement.

This is how I see our military being funded in an America 100% free of all taxes. Agree it’s an unlikely prospect.

          2. Heroic Mulatto

            Agree it’s an unlikely prospect.

            But not without precedent!

    6. mexican sharpshooter

I realize there are historical differences, but how likely is a Hong Kong type setup for Taiwan? I doubt its ideal, but being a bargaining chip between two world powers has a lot of downsides.

      1. Rhywun

how likely is a Hong Kong type setup for Taiwan?

I think none at all. China wants to punish them bad – they’re still technically rebels, after all.

        1. The Red Chinese are the rebels.

          1. Yusef drives a Kia

Depends on who won? The Reds got the Mainland, so I’m going with the Commies for legitimacy, sorry, They Won.

          2. Rhywun

Good point. Still, China probably sees “unfinished business” there.

          3. Yusef drives a Kia

Oh yes, they do, and sooner than later, they will take it. I heard there is a segment of the Taiwanese population that Wants reunification.

          4. Stinky Wizzleteats

That segment is either stupid or nuts or both.

          5. Bobarian LMD

There is a segment of the US population that would like to be under communist rule, as well.

          6. Gustave Lytton

Also, the three political parties in ROC that have Communist in their name.

      2. Semi-Spartan Dad

There was another article in the WSJ today about how Beijing is setting up a checkpoint in Hong Kong, stocked with mainland officials and police, that will be have the power to enforce mainland law in a 15 mile radius. I think Hong Kong will slowly revert back into mainland China.

        1. mexican sharpshooter

Well, that sucks. On the bright side, it did take them 20 years to do it.

        2. Gustave Lytton

The one country two systems only extends until 2047 (in Hong Kong, 2049 for Macau) formally. Even if the Chicoms didn’t get a jump on things, it would still be reverting eventually.

We artel dear. Play we don’t artel it any fulther.

  19. The Late P Brooks

Sex makes me feel unsafe, not because of the act itself but because my partners so often disappear afterward, whether I waited hours or months before the first time. So it’s after sex when I feel truly vulnerable.

    Huh.

    1. kinnath

Maybe you’re just not that good at it.

    3. Bob Boberson

Lets just assume she isn’t a hopeless case and this guy did her wrong, I’d really like to ask her if perhaps its an unfair assumption that traditionally masculine men who don’t ask for consent every five seconds cannot possibly be genuine caring people? And maybe is it possible that millennial, sensitive affirmative -consent seekers can be still be creeps?

      1. Here’s a wild thought: maybe some of those traditionally masculine traits, such as behaving like a gentleman towards ladies, assuming the role of guardian, taking responsibility for the physical safety of people in your care, being a provider, make for men who are also caring, kind, and generous lovers. And maybe overgrown man-children who have been taught to regard women as guys with vaginas and have been raised to believe those aforementioned masculine traits are bad things wind up behaving like self-centered children. Just spitballin’ here.

        1. trshmnstr

Dave Ramsey’s saying comes to mind… “children just do what feels good at the time”

          1. Say what you will about Trick Daddy, but he was absolutely right:

And you couldn’t have been hitting her right
Cause every second night she been hitting the phones

Bruh, Edge sucks. I mean, Chrome and Firefox also manage to suck almost as bad, but not quite.

All browsers have sucked since Opera 12.17.

      I’m sympathetic to this opinion.

    2. I like Vivaldi, but the JavaScript execution is a little buggy. I use FF to browse and Chrome for dev.

      1. Michael

I’ve been dabbling with Vivaldi too, though I haven’t acclimated myself to it enough to make it my daily driver yet. I like that their philosophy is to bake as much functionality in natively instead of relying on potentially sketchy third-party extensions. The old version of Opera that this is modeled after was the Swiss army knife of browsers, and I’ve missed it dearly since it was laid to rest.

Steve Hayward: On second thought, maybe the quantification of economics isn’t such a bad idea after all.

But I am hesitating for a moment, and am beginning to wonder whether these trends might not save economics from going down the drain. Consider an article in Nature magazine a few days ago which laments that “post-crash economics” isn’t “pluralist, critical and relevant to society.” What can that phrase mean? I’m sure you can guess, but I’ll let the author, Maeve Cohen (director of Rethinking Economics in Manchester, described as “a non-profit group devoted to improving economics education”), explain it directly:

Students should learn mainstream economics, but it should be juxtaposed with the myriad other schools of economic thought, such as ecological economics (which embeds the economy in the environment, rather than thinking of it as an externality), feminist economics (in which gender relations, and unpaid domestic labour, are integral to how the economy functions) or post-Keynesian economics (which proposes, among other things, that the size of an economy is determined by what people are able to buy, rather than by what they produce).

    1. Yusef drives a Kia

Economics without numbers, that will work out fine……

      1. Mad Scientist

Look, feminist economists have other ways of knowing! They don’t need you mansplaining about your patriarchial, uh, uh, whadayacallit, numbers!

      2. A Leap at the Wheel

Bastiat never used math. Worked out OK for him.

        1. Yusef drives a Kia

yet here we are, how’s it working for us, Mr Leap?

          1. A Leap at the Wheel

Well, he was an important influence that laid a lot of the intellectual foundations for the Austrian school of economics, which influenced the Chicago school, which produced an economist named Russ Roberts who make the greatest rap-battle video featuring 2 fake mustaches.

Pretty good work for a Frenchman.

There’s a partner at one of the law firms we regularly use, and he’s a very nice guy. Overexuberant would describe him, too. All sorts of all-caps and multiple exclamation points after every sentence, and in his world there is never a cloud in the sky. He’s very much the same in person.

I’ve always been amused by him, but now I get why others are annoyed by him. Even when the shit hits the fan, it’s still the best day ever for this guy. At some point, I’d like for him to just level with me and say “look, we screwed up and we won’t let it happen again. We realize that you’re paying many thousands of dollars for our services, and we take that quite seriously.”

I was driving through New Orleans about two years ago, and noticed one of the buildings still had search markings (as did many buildings) from one of my National Guard battalion’s sister battalion. Eerie to see that.

          10. I remember driving into New Orleans about five years ago with my wife and brother-in-law. We’d already driven through the ‘Bama about a week after the tornadoes, which was pretty spooky, but heading into New Orleans and seeing the damage that was still there outside the fancier parts of the city was sobering.

          11. Gustave Lytton

Yeah, that one was probably either in the Lower Ninth or Bywater. Was coming back from Chalmette Battlefield and stopped to pay my respects at this place.

    5. JaimeRoberto

Let me get this straight. The Paris accords would have reduced the increase in temperature by something like 0.1 degree Celsius 100 years from now if everyone did their part. So assuming that the reduction is linear and adjusting for the US share of emissions, the temperature is something like 0.0003 degrees higher than they would be if we had stayed in the Paris accord. And that’s what is causing the hurricane. And Trump is the crazy one.

      1. Suthenboy

It would not have done that
All it did was transfer US taxpayer dollars to banana republic dictators

“Nevada professor allegedly shot himself to protest Trump: report

A College of Southern Nevada (CSN) sociology professor allegedly shot himself while on campus last month to protest President Trump, police said.

Mark Bird, a professor emeritus at CSN in Las Vegas, was found suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the morning of August 28, Richard Lake, a CSN spokesman, told Fox News. He was treated for the injury to his arm and was arrested, Lake said.

Bird was charged with carrying a concealed weapon without a permit, discharging a gun within a prohibited structure and possessing a dangerous weapon on school property, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

In their report, police said Bird told them he shot himself near a campus bathroom to protest Trump, according to the Review-Journal. A $100 bill was also taped inside the bathroom with a note indicating it was “for the janitor,” the report said.”
