Coming Attractions & Saturday Night Open Post

Happy long weekend to those of you who have one. I unaccountably have a paper due tomorrow. (Who assigns a research paper to be turned in on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend?!)

However, here on the site, we have another full slate of great articles in the coming week. We are really on a roll. Keep the submissions coming! (No, Creosote Achilles, SUBMISSIONS, not submission. No, Q, SUBMISSIONS, not emission.)

Coming up we have posts from: Not Adahn; westernsloper; trshmnstr; Yusef Drives a Kia; wchipperdove; Florida Man; CPRM; A Leap at the Wheel; Bob Boberson; and Animal. Web Dom’s vegan School is out for recess on Labor Day, but we hope to have a post from SugarFree in his usual spot on Wednesday. And, of course, your regularly scheduled opportunities to ignore the links.

I know, I know, “Stop talking and let us get on with the Saturday Night Open Post!”

    College football is back!

Ohio State learned that you can actually use the QB to throw the ball and not just as a RB/sprint option.

Michigan currently playing the altar boy to Notre Dame.

UVA is not losing to an FCS team, which they have done before.

    1. AlmightyJB

Yeah, I was in my happy place today:)

      1. Viking1865

It’s something that puzzles me about both Bama and tOSU these last few years. They insist on using athletes at QB, when they can recruit actual legit passing threats and have their usual loaded skill positions and defenses combined with an actual QB who can take over games.

But they persist in rolling out the Jalen Hurts and JT Barrets of the world.

        1. AlmightyJB

JT did improve as a passer but not as much as I think anyone would have liked including the coaches. He was a strong leader , was pretty good at managing the game, and he could make things happen which really messed with the defense. I think the coaches overall thought the pluses outweighed the minuses. There just aren’t that many great pocket passers coming out of high school. Look how hard it is for NFL teams to find a franchise QB. JT was a winner and that goes a long way.

          1. Drake

JT Daniels lived up to the hype. He throws a pretty spiral.

          2. AlmightyJB

USC’s had a lot of great passers over the years. They seem to be able to find them and reel them in. I’m sure the Southern Cal hotties don’t hurt:)

          3. Viking1865

Eh, there’s plenty of quality pocket passers out there, and it’s not like Bama and tOSU can’t get them if they wanted them.

Like, 2013 high school stats the top 10 in yards included Patrick Mahomes, Jake Browning, and Will Grier. Plus Mason Rudolph and Deshaun Watson are in that general range. One of those guys should have been at Bama.

You don’t need some top tier player, you just need to have followed AJ McCarron with another actual QB who can operate a passing offense. It’s a fucking shame watching these WRs and TEs in Tuscaloosa dealing with Jalen Hurts throwing the ball poorly.

        2. trshmnstr

Pocket passers who aren’t a generational talent are usually a work in progress during college. They’re having to do more than just put the ball between the numbers of an open receiver for the first time, and accuracy means nothing if you can’t begin to read progressions, time hot routes, and anticipate weaknesses in opponents’ defensive schemes. That’s why pocket passers usually get hot in their junior year and get the hype as seniors. The freak athlete QBs can be studs as freshmen, and they don’t have to know what’s going on. Simply avoid being sacked. If nobody comes open, run for 5 yards. If somebody comes open throw it to them, accuracy not required since the defense is scrambling to contain you. They also open up RPO as an option, which exploits lack of defensive discipline.

          1. slumbrew

            You’re doing the internet wrong!

Your comment was thoughtful and has a large amount of explanatory power. That’s now how it’s supposed to work.

It explains why Saban – a close Belichick confidant – isn’t looking for the next Brady; Brady at Michigan was nothing like Brady of today.

    2. AlmightyJB

Haskins looked solid. Lots of weapons on that team. Secondary and Special Teams need to get their heads out of their ass though. I’m sure Meyer will address that.

    3. Gustave Lytton

OSU is starting strong for a perfect season.

      1. Gustave Lytton

Just to be clear, a perfect losing season for the real OSU.

    4. Raven Nation

Meanwhile, KU plumbs new depths of incompetence.

    5. Spudalicious

And Boise State bitch slaps Troy.

      1. Gustave Lytton

At least the Broncos don’t let me down (much). It’s an orange and blue day at the GL household.

        1. Spudalicious

They will move up this week. There were a number of upsets. Currently enjoying Michigan losing to Notre Dame.

    6. Playa Manhattan

      College football is back????

Dang! I must have missed it. Does anyone have the Cal score?

      1. Nephilium

        Yep, it’s 5-2.

      2. F. Stupidity Jr.

Joe Kapp saved the penalty with a clutch fumble.

        1. Playa Manhattan

My best friend’s dad was the assistant coach for him during the Big Play.

          He’s a hero:
“In December 1981, Kapp made a promise to the football team that he would not consume any of his favorite alcoholic beverage, tequila, until the Golden Bears reached the Rose Bowl. As of March 2011, the Golden Bears have yet to return to the Rose Bowl and Kapp has resorted to drinking rum instead.[6]”

  2. Chipping Pioneer

For the sake of New York, I hope that the attendees at the state fair are not representative of the general population. Otherwise, it’s not a good looking state.

    1. AlmightyJB

Now you see why the sheep look alluring to some folks.

    2. Rhywun

I bet you didn’t know there were so many different kinds of mullets.

    3. Winston

Where’s Will Rogers when you need him?

  3. Count Potato

I hate arguing technical support issues with stupid people.

    1. Winston

How’s the weather in India? 😛

      1. AlmightyJB

He does not know what you are talking about. His name is Steve and his wife Brenda makes the best Apple Pie.

        1. Nephilium

Would you now do the kindly?

          1. Rhywun

Do not be forgetting the needful!

      2. Count Potato

        This was an American.

    1. AlmightyJB

I haven’t seen any. Kinda looked dumb.

    2. Rhywun

a full-frontal assault on rightwing values

      That’s original.

      1. Chafed

Yeah. Hollywood hates anyone not sufficiently progressive. Who’da thought?

    3. Suthenboy

      It’s all projection.
If there were such a thing I would spend that night doing the same thing I do every night – mind my own business. I dont have some inner desire to hurt people or steal from them. The people whose values Blum is making into a giant straw man live all around me. Crime here is pretty rare. We have a half dozen arrests in a month and it is always the same thing – domestic violence, drugs, petty burglary – and committed by the usual suspects.
Where is crime the highest? In the rural areas where people have right wing values? Or in urban areas chock full of progressives spitting on those values?
Just more commie clap-trap from the left.

    4. Florida Man

Nope. I liked the purge scare zone at HHN, but that’s as far as I go.

    5. Florida Man

As a result, crime overall is at an all-time low, fewer people live below the poverty line and unemployment is at 1%.-

Also, as utilitarians, shouldn’t the left love this result?

    6. Raphael

If a Purge scenario came to be, I’d be torrenting the whole night.

    7. Count Potato

The first and third ones were good.

    8. Lackadaisical

Jason Blum, producer of the ultra-violent Purge franchise, explains why what began as a small-scale anti-NRA satire has turned into a full-frontal assault on rightwing values […] the franchise has become increasingly political and provocative, with box-office takings growing in kind. What began as a genre exercise has morphed into a war cry, the metaphors making way for primal screams.

Because they’re cashing in? The world is full of idiots.

      1. Rhywun

I’m picturing an entire theater full of Trigglypuffs…. *shudder*

        1. Suthenboy

          And antifa and blm.

      2. Count Potato

That’s an awfully poor interpretation. Self-reliance is way more right-wing than left-wing.

      3. Nephilium

I thought we were done with this. It can’t get as bad as the Saw movies making the killer’s motivation a lack of single payer health care, can it?

        1. Count Potato

The killer in Saw was motivated by a lack of single payer health care?

          1. Nephilium

Yeah, it was retconned in one of the later films. Link has the audio, I’d have to hunt for a video link, which would require more effort then I’m willing to make for a bad horror film. (And I love me my bad horror films).

          2. Winston

            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saw_VI

Reviews were mixed, with some criticizing the acting and others praising Greutert’s directing and the film’s contribution to the debate on healthcare reform in the United States.

          3. Rhywun

Oh FFS… I remember seeing it and rolling my eyes at the “plot”.

          4. Nephilium

It takes a lot for more to tap out of a franchise. FFS, I finished the Wheel of Time series, have all of the GRRM books, own Jason X, and went through 3 of the Brian Herbert books. Saw, and the Sword of Truth novels by Goodkind have been the only franchises I can remember tapping out of at this point. I even hate watched the last several seasons of Dexter and House.

    9. Grumbletarian

Ethan Hawke’s character in the first film was the face of American apathy, a homeowner selling security systems to the rich while those who can’t afford such protection are slaughtered.

“Congress blocked gun control that Obama put up. James DeMonaco and I are pretty outspoken in our political views, and those views are very much in the movies. They’re about the power of the NRA and the absurdity of our gun laws here. It’s a cautionary tale about how dangerous and nonsensical those laws are.”

Sounds like Blum is more like Hawke’s character in that he wants to abolish affordable home security systems so that only the wealthy have them.

    1. Those Amish, I tell you.

    3. Chafed

Thank goodness. I thought you were taking the weekend off.

  5. Raphael

More articles hype! I’m looking forward to procrastinating at work reading that lineup.

  6. CPRM

Nobody wants a CPRM article, that guy fucking sucks.

So, i may have started reading the thread here the first time. I legit thought Yusef was making his entry into the porn industry. Either that or there was some joke I was missing. Turns out reading the original post of the thread is important.

      2. CPRM

Yes, as a video professional, lights are very good, one might say neccesarry, so if you pay for video, don’t use fucking lights, otherwise you’re asking the impossible from video. I mean, this gets thrown around alot now on the web, but that is fucking science.

        1. CPRM

I was going to make a tired and insensitive remark something like isn’t that too much throw for an asian man, but I decided not to do that.

    2. Rhywun

      I think it’s a Sybian gone awry.

      1. CPRM

Are sybians something that are used your *cough* circles? (It’s not something I’ve ever looked into, but knowing that you know what that is, it is now something I oddly want to know the answer to)

        1. Rhywun

LOL I suppose it’s possible if unknown to me but I was a big Howard Stern fan back in the day so I’m familiar with them.

          1. Nephilium

Definitely not clicking on any youtube link that references a Sybian. Even at home, the girlfriend may walk in, and that would be an awkward conversation.

  12. F. Stupidity Jr.

Well, tonight settles it: I cannot have chips in the house. I crushed the whole goddamn bag.

Which is why we MUST get some legislation to reduce bag sizes. Surely, if I can’t resist eating the whole bag, that’s true for everyone. Therefore, we must have smaller chip bags. People, especially women, children, and minorities, will DIE if we don’t take this common-sense step as a country.

    1. Mad Scientist

No one needs more than 23 potato chips!

    2. Heroic Mulatto

      Sounds legit.

    3. straffinrun

      What flavor?

    4. Rhywun

I can’t resist eating the whole bag

It seems unbelievable until you realize that 8oz bag you remember curbing your whole family’s munchies for 89 cents is now 2 1/4 oz and costs twice as much.

    5. Playa Manhattan

I realized that casual snacking on chips and salsa was a huge source of calories in my diet. More than a double cheeseburger.

  13. Akira

OT: As I mentioned in a previous thread, I’m watching Once Upon a Time in America, my favorite movie of all time.

This is total drunk talk, but here it goes: Have you ever felt like a movie/book/song/poem has had a significant influence on the person you came to be? I’ve been watching this movie since I was 16, and I can’t really explain it, but I think it played a role in how I think and view the world.

Do you have some work of art that has done that for you, and what is it?

    1. Heroic Mulatto

Yes, The Oral Adventures of Craven Moorehead #17.

    2. Nephilium

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, and The Trees by Rush. Fuck you, I know I’m a stereotype. Personal best was convincing the girlfriend at the time to explain how the Trees showed how terrible attempts at legislating equality works out when she went to an all girls college.

    3. straffinrun

Not even a close call for me. Crime and Punishment.

      1. Akira

I got that book for my birthday several years ago… I’ll have to read it sometime.

        1. straffinrun

It explores the depth to which we all sink to when we use reason to justify our conclusions. That would be fine if the reasons led us to our conclusions instead of vice versa. It’s like having a lawyer inside your head that you paid to defend your positions, but that lawyer is not objective or bound by moral concerns. I highly recommend it.

          1. Heroic Mulatto

That’s a good way to put it. If you haven’t read him already, you’d dig Jung.

          2. straffinrun

I’ve read a little of his stuff over the years. Being the obsessive freak I am, I need binge read to get the info to stick. Integrating the dark side of the self with the entire psyche is what I remember. Sounds a lot what Dosty was getting at.

Working on the Tacoma. Took it in for a factory recall and while they replaced the leaf springs they told me one of my shocks was blown. They wanted to charge me $500 to do the work. I told them to basically go pound sand because I can get the parts for $100 dollars and do the job in about an hour. Long story short, the fucking tech tightened every bolt to 200ft/ld just to be a cunt. I got one side done but fuck me , I ran out of daylight. Now I wanna go back to the dealership and bust some noses. Fucking assholes.

    1. Mad Scientist

Get an impact gun and laugh at the tech’s futile attempt to dissuade you.

Also: this. An excuse to buy more equipment.

    2. slumbrew

What a fucking cock. That would enrage me.

Try contacting someone at Toyota that is higher up the corporate chain. Were they an official Toyota repair shop?

      1. Festus

The dealer that I bought the truck from. This story ain’t over, Man… I’ve spent about a day and half fucking around while that jerk sits and cleans his whiskers.

    4. dorvinion

It seems to me that overtorqueing the bolts of suspension parts is likely dangerous. Assuming it could be proven, the tech intentionally compromised the safety of your vehicle.

I don’t think I’d trust any of the fasteners that had been abused in such a manner.

      1. Heroic Mulatto

It seems to me that overtorqueing the bolts of suspension parts is likely dangerous. Assuming it could be proven, the tech intentionally compromised the safety of your vehicle.

That was the first thing I thought, actually.

When my wife’s (former) Nissan got a flat, It took me a 6 foot pole to loosen the lugs. Probably in the 200ft range. Fucking idiots.

    6. Playa Manhattan

BTW, does your Tacoma have Crawl Control? I’m adding it to my SUV next month.

      1. Festus

2nd gen so probably not. I use the four wheel in the winter just cause it’s better at stops and starts but I’ve basically babied this vehicle. It’s a 2008 and has @ 80,000 miles on it.

        1. Festus

Also funny, my wife has a Nissan too! A Juke! Fuck I feel like an idiot whenever I have to drive that abortion on wheels around. *slips cap lower, pushes sunglasses up* The little fucker has some pep, though. I got it up to 120 mph in turbo mode before my testicles shrank into the wherewithal. It would have gone faster in a younger mans hands.

  15. Winston

Abe Lincoln and U.S. Grant: The only libertarian TOP MEN?

    1. Gustave Lytton

      Now you’re trolling.

      1. Winston

Heh. In seriousness I do wonder that if a war to end slavery and the use of the likes of the income tax and the draft, etc. was just as was the use of the military to enforce civil rights for the freed slaves then what does that say about the anti-war and anti-militarist attitudes of libertarians and what does that say about current American wars and militarism?

        1. gbob

That and the Civil Rights act is why I’m a “libertarian as a principle” rather than “libertarian as a political goal”. I’m glad the south lost. I’m glad segregation ended. Although abstractly I believe that both would have ended by market forces, the generations of people in bondage wouldn’t have been worth the cost.

Wait a minute. You’re trolling for drunks like me.

          You bastard.

          1. Nephilium

Damn it man. I’ve gone through several pints, and several drams tonight. I’m not in the mood to think. Can I just emote?

          1. Heroic Mulatto

The answer is always Sisko. I mean, Kirk may have been trapped in the Nexus for some time, but Sisko actually underwent a true apotheosis.

          2. Winston

So is Sisko woke or not these days? I can’t tell.

          3. Heroic Mulatto

If we take the view that all of Star Trek was actually the delusions of Benny Russell, then Sisko is woke as fuck.

          4. Nephilium

Nice on pulling out the Benny Russell reference, but Jeffrey Sinclair and John Sheridan were the better captains.

          5. Chafed

Babylon 5 was the better show. William Shatner can do no wrong so Kirk is still the best captain.

          6. gbob

What the hell dumb question is that? Some bald headed officious prick or a guy who gets shit done on the frontier. Picard is the Kenny G to Kirk’s Charlie Parker.

In many ways, McCain was the anti-Trump: a supporter of a values-based West, a defender of democracy and human rights, an advocate of civilized debate and bipartisan cooperation — a true hero, someone who did not put himself first.

    1. Heroic Mulatto

That “anti-Trumpness” includes making several secret trips to Syria in an effort to embroil the U.S. in that bloody quagmire.

      1. Winston

Notice that in the era of Trump the usual anti-war and anti-American Imperialism talk from the usual suspects has completely vanished? Don’t hear much about the Shah, Pinochet, the Contras or Iraq anymore…

          1. Winston

Raimondo carries the legacy of Rothbard’s anti-neoconism so it is no surprise that he is consistent at that…

So is Marx finished? Not at all. For me, what makes Marx worth reading now is not his Panglossian prognoses, but his still resonant diagnoses. For instance, he and Engels foresaw how globalisation would work. “In place of the old wants,” they wrote, “satisfied by the production of the country, we find new wants, requiring for their satisfaction the products of distant lands and climes.” That’s why Chinese workers make products we never conceived would exist, let alone that we would covet, and that would convert us into politically quiescent, borderline sociopathic, sleepwalking narcissists. That’s right – I’m talking about iPhones.

I find it hard to read the first few pages of The Communist Manifesto without thinking that I live in the world he and Engels described. “Constant revolutionising of production, uninterrupted disturbance of all social conditions, everlasting uncertainty and agitation distinguish the bourgeois epoch from all earlier ones.” We inhabit a world just like that, only more intensely than Marx and Engels dared imagine. For me, these words don’t just capture how Uber, Deliveroo and the other virtuosos of the gig economy chip away at values and standards to make a fast buck, but also how the planet is relentlessly despoiled in order to satisfy tax-avoiding shareholders

      Let go of the iPhone!

Tossing yourself off a bridge works, too.

I’ve been looking for the person who said that society is the mirror by which we see our behavior. We act and the reactions to our behavior gives us a more or less reality based reflection of ourselves. Knowing something is BS, has a grain of truth or even spot on right means we have to express that thought to others. Something along those lines. Any clue? I’m thinking that I read something about that in Aristotle’s response to mimetics in Plato.

    1. Yusef drives a Kia

I sometimes open a window for people, they see it and shy away, too much thought and responsibility is all can tell

      1. straffinrun

I think this is a place where libertarians are even worse than conservatives. Our reaction to poor behavior is unmitigated disgust. We’re not going to gain wider traction if we can’t find a way to package our message with a modicum of sympathy. As stupid as it was, Dubya’s “compassionate conservatism” recognized how toxic the reaction of disgust can be to a movement.

        1. Gustave Lytton

Wait, “fuck off, slaver” isn’t going to win the hearts and minds of the populace?

          1. straffinrun

Exactly. Change it to “Fuck off, Slavery” and you directed disgust from a human with bad ideas to the bad idea itself.
