Catch up on all the Omaha Beach Diorama posts
Things change when you build a diorama, and now that I’m on my second one, I have learned that they ain’t the same. Scale aside, this one has pieces embedded. I usually would show you a bunch of tanks and guns on my table, ready to display. This time I have to place men as part of the piece, as it were, then place all my dynamic guys after, with the pieces set (the pieces are all the boats, tanks and things on the table).
I learned that D-Day occurred at low tide, so a nice bit of rip rap seemed to fit the bill.
And I wanted a mixed sand look, so we take 10 parts sand color to 1 part black cinder and it comes out like this:
A little more against the wall and we are done with the beach sand element of the project.
Defenses: Trying to finalize the primary defenses is easy enough, some barbed wire and the dragon’s teeth, some boat preventers and we are looking good so far, but there are a few details yet to come in that regard.
Army Men: I’m reaching saturation on the board. Have 221 men to paint, and with all the effects it’s going to get busy.
They need 7 colors, and we paint the base, then bas relief the rest of them. In 1/35 I could paint masses of one color, for example, all the boots on one sprue tree, all the Kbars on another, and guns on a third, all in one pass. At 1/72 scale I get about 3 to 6 parts done before my eyes bug out, so it kinda sucks for production, but we carry on.
These are the guys I need to finish now, everyone else can wait.
Someone asked about tools. I have my main tools and supplies packed for the AZ move, so everything had to be bought from scratch on this project, and it looks like this:
I am using acrylics as much as possible, and Hobby Lobby has a great selection, very cheap. All the scenery elements like the clump foliage used in the ‘splosions, the water, sand, etc. are Woodland Scenics. Dollar Tree supplies my white glue, toothpicks, foam board, rip rap, stir sticks and painters blue tape. I’ll show you how I do some cool things in a future post.
P.S. I’m cutting this episode short because a lot of things are happening, and I don’t want to get confused. Cheers!
Man, that beach looks amazing! It’s something I would expect to see in a museum.
Luxury.
For wargaming, I paint 1/72 white metal figurines. No sprues, just individual figures that I may or may not have to glue heads on.
A bit expensive for my work, and You know that. My issue with 1/72 is I can see the details, but my eyes are burned out so I can’t paint them right. I’m going back to 1/35 after this, but This is turning out nicely
Just busting balls.
As a teen I did 1/72. I can’t imagine doing 1/35 now.
Nice job Yusef!
Very nice sand details and man your diorama is looking awesome. The explosion and smoke effects are pretty damn nice too. Hope the painting of the bois doesn’t go too roughly on you.
The Bois are always tough cause boring, but ‘Splosions are fun to make,
Thanks
I saw a video, and about Cried, I nailed the Surfline! When the Acrylic water goes in, it will be Amazing. I’m not bragging, I’m just blown away.
I ran a test with Bloos water again, this time with a guy in the water, it will work,
Blood not Bloos
Nice work, Yufus. You clearly have more patience than I do. And more attention to detail.
Thanks, Where’s My M’fuckin Song?
/is that right?
In honor of the troops hitting the beach…..
Yep, Right there
Toxic masculinity. Look at the photo on Bing today. Here’s a small lower rez version.
Toxic Masculinity
We no longer need men and their toxic masculinity because we’ve decided to never get anything done again which requires ballz. We’ve went so far downhill. I have a sad.
you realize most of the World doesn’t give a Shit about first World problems, I can’t stand HotAir Headlines….
“you realize most of the World doesn’t give a Shit about first World problems”
Yeah, and they also cannot get jackshit done either.
Glibertarians, “Get shit done or Die”
Most of the world doesn’t fucking matter. You commie globalist shitlord.
Almost none of it matters. But I find it really cute when the Eurotards call themselves first world and pretend to matter, all the while trying to make sure that they never matter.
To be fair, that picture seems like a bad idea. My grandfather jumped out of planes to shoot Nazis, but he had a parachute on.
Which one?
I’m sure he’s talking about the guys napping on those steel beams 800 ft above the ground, no wires, no shit. That is either fucking crazy or ballz of steel, maybe both.
Oh, yeah, if the question was about the pictures I’m definitely referring to people sleeping in a dog-pile multiple stories above the ground on a thin rail with no safety gear.
Yeah. Even my dad, who was born in the 1930s, he’s a big time history buff, used to always use the phrase back when I was a kid ‘Back when men were men’.
Mister, we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again.
I don’t know what it takes to invade Normandy, but I know I ain’t got it. Whatever they were puttin’ in the water back then they must’ve stopped before 1978.
82nd Airborne. He fought in Sicily, but because he’d been in school for accounting before he dropped out to enlist they rotated him back to London to do logistics stuff before Market Garden.
I like that picture is from art.com, their office is close to where I work, and I know some of the staff. A sorta small world thing, I guess.
The first time I heard the idea of “toxic masculinity”, I thought it was some satire shit. Then people I knew actually believed it.
What irritates me the most about the “toxic masculinity” thing: It’s mostly women who speak out about it, yet it’s also women who will negatively judge a man who does not exhibit sufficient masculinity. Most women won’t even think about being in a relationship with a man who did not exhibit at least some masculine traits. Women flock to men who are confident, dominant, popular, and successful… Yet some women turn around and criticize those traits as “toxic masculinity”.
I can’t stand when people verbally espouse one principle but disprove that very principle by their actions.
The offenders are women who cannot possibly in their wildest dreams get laid by a dominant man, which is of course what they want, and have a very near zero chance of attracting anyone to have sex with them. The issue is that with the internet we’ve given a loud voice to these people and democrats have decided that they are the most useful idiots of all.
What I don’t like about the phrase is that it implies there’s something inherently wrong with masculinity. The negative traits typically referred to as “toxic masculinity” aren’t inherently masculine traits, they’re just shitty behaviors. Peer pressure isn’t inherently masculine, but when it’s considered in the context of men feeling pressure to behave boorishly the boorishness is bound to male identity and it becomes the maleness that’s the problem, not the peer pressure or the boorishness. Well, guess what? Women do the same shit to each other, but nobody refers to “toxic femininity”.
“What I don’t like about the phrase is that it implies there’s something inherently wrong with masculinity.”
Well, that’s exactly what they are saying.
Exactly! Both men and women are far more than capable of being “toxic” to one another. I just say that so-and-so person is being toxic or that they’re a “toxic person” and leave it at that.
What actually really surprised me recently was that it was a male friend that was espousing it. I’ve been rather fortunate that most of the women I know don’t drink that kool-aid.
I agree with you there though. The hypcocrisy is ridiculous.
I would guess one of two things:
1) He thinks that espousing mainstream feminist opinions will get women to like him
2) Some people think that criticizing your own group (whether race, gender, or nationality) makes you appear intelligent, noble, or magnanimous. So, they engage in loud public criticisms of groups that they belong to.
There’s a #3 possibility, and that’s that he doesn’t have the traits he considers masculine, and so there’s a bit of sour grapes going on.
Probably all 3 options, the guy has been married to a pretty progressive gal for a couple years and he hasn’t shied away from trashing other groups/political thoughts he and I are/were part of.
The punani is strong. Some might say it has magical powers over the minds of men. I know many brothers whose minds have been clouded by its mystical force to the point that they stop hanging out with their friends and self-medicate in their basements. Even my best man from my wedding now spends his time minding his wife’s corgis, having sold his motorcycle and abandoned the society of others.
This is why it’s so nice to be married to a mature traditional Latina woman. They laugh at that bullshit and fully embrace the traditional masculine / feminine rolls. If you’re a guy, you’re expected to have toxic masculinity. If you’re a woman, you’re expected to be feminine, not a feminist.
I was the only guy in an Cuban household growing up. I was definitely expected to put on the big Boi pants and have cojones.
On the contrary – not only do we need men to build stuff, we need ten times as many as in the bad old days. Sure, half of them aren’t doing anything at any given time but they’re all making a “prevailing wage”!
Happy Labor Day.
Aren’t those photos staged?
No, OSHA didn’t exist, But thanks for playing Tulpa!
Wiki sez:
Still, I’m skeptical that they were actually sitting on that beam a few hundred feet above the street. I think there was probably some kind of platform that was 20 feet or so below them… Then again, it was the ’30s, before this culture of perpetual safety took root.
C’mon, let me have my Dream of Crazy Building guys….
I knew a couple iron walkers from the Mohawk Nation when I was a kid (older men by then). Completely conquered their fear response. The photos they had taken really impressed me.
I read somewhere years ago about a guy who was doing a piece on American Indians (presumably Mohawks) working on skyscrapers in NYC in those days, and when he was going up to talk to the guys they’d be traipsing around on those girders without a care in the world, some of them hung over or half-drunk. And people definitely fell off and died, but it was just considered par for the course.
Yep, that’s exactly what they said.
“Sure, we were afraid, but we just stifled that response and went to work and got on with it every day.”
I’m a compulsive looker-upper when it comes to trivial anecdotes like these, so I dredged up an article from The Straight Dope (an interesting columnist who I’ve been reading ever since we got the Internet in 1997).
https://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/659/why-do-so-many-native-americans-work-on-skyscrapers/
I found this part interesting. It’s a story from a guy who spent a lot of time with a group of Indians as part of some research project:
That looks awesome. Just think how much more you’d have to model if D-Day happened now. First, you need a flotilla of reporters demanding that Gen. Eisenhower tell them the exact date, place and timing of the invasion. Then, add the protesting French animal lovers who are worried that the
fragile bird species, Normandy Sand Plovers, will have their nesting disturbed. Environmentalists will be bitching about the hydrocarbon powered LSTs and demanding all landing craft be sail powered. The Nazi version of OSHA will be suing on the grounds that bombs and artillery shells will be damaging the eardrums of their soldiers. Back in England, the longshoremen will be refusing to load ships until they are paid a living wage. Harridans will be demanding all the GIs, most them rapists and overpaid to boot, be sent back where they came from. The president will be issuing an order to all commanders that no medals be given to any soldier who gets taken prisoner. Every fifth toy soldier will be carrying a rainbow flag. I’m sure this just scratches the surface of all the changes you’ll need to make.
So, just paint it White and Forget it ever Happened ?
Wait, that Sounds French………………
No, you can’t paint it white, unless you are a racist!
Well, I saw a Red Door once, and Painted it Black, so anything is possible,
Wendy is Rockin! BTW
Great news about Wendy!
What, nothing at all about giving each soldier an additional tag on the uniform to specify which gender pronouns xey prefer??
Whatever you say, Pat Robertson!
And they all die a Worthless Death…………………
OT: Does anyone here do freelance copywriting?
I think this is what I want to pursue as a career. I’ve done a lot of work on broker-type sites (“content mills”, as they’re called) but I always hear that you have to find private clients if you want to start earning at a level that could support you. I’m reading The Copywriter’s Handbook by Robert W. Bly, which is full of good information. I just wondered if anyone here had experience in this field and had tips on where to find clients, how to sell them on your services, and how to get more money with this type of work.
I want to be an A/C guy, where do I start?
/that’s what I heard, no offence
So, I did, unsuccessfully, for about two years. This is nearly ten years ago, so I don’t know what the situation is now. I split my time between some of those broker sites bidding on piecework and contracts for businesses in the area.
In my experience the problem with the piecework stuff was twofold; you get outbid by Indian or Pakistani copy-mills who have staff on hand with enough English to get by who will bid crazy low on a bunch of jobs, and you’re dealing the usual stuff in consulting where you’ve got clients who want $1000 worth of work for $250. I remember I had one that started out great, but then kept trying to renegotiate the job. Basically as soon as I’d finish, they’d change the requirements such that I’d need to put ten or fifteen more hours in, without any additional pay, and claim that the additional work either had always been part of the contract (it hadn’t) or that it was just understood to be a requirement (it wasn’t).
I had more success with the contract work but it varied pretty wildly. Some places were great; clear objectives, professional behavior, mutually-understood expectations, prompt payment. Others…well…I remember one where I came on as an editor. Funny thing was that they were a big customer of the copy-mill type stuff I mentioned before, and the problem was that they’d save a bunch of money on the initial content but then have to spend a bunch of man-hours editing it into something they could actually use. That place had some real problems with management and budget, and they were trying to squeeze as much out of their in-house editorial and copy staff as they could. After they were a month late on a paycheck I left.
It’s crazy that they even try to do that. I used to hang around this Internet marketing forum where people were always starting up websites and buying/selling SEO and copywriting services. And it was pretty common knowledge that you shouldn’t hire anyone but native-born English speakers for serious copywriting… But I guess cutting major corners to save a few bucks is hardly a new thing.
Once I finish this book, I’m going to try and go back to that forum to sell some services, just as a jumping off point if nothing else. Regarding scammers, they have a section where you can make a public grievance if you believe someone has defrauded you. The user is notified of this grievance and they have a time window during which they can respond to the allegations. I don’t remember immediately, but I think they can eventually get banned if they blatantly stiff someone. So I’m sure that’s not a magic bullet, but hopefully it would cut down on fraudsters.
Thanks for the tips!
For sure, and good luck! The funny thing is that now I’m seeing something really similar working where I do, where we’ll hire consultants on the GSA list to do development work in the full knowledge that we’re going to get absolute shit and have to fix it ourselves. But management is largely Fed and oblivious to boot, so they pick the same people they’ve always worked with because they’ve got a consulting budget to spend, and then assume that eventually something usable will happen.
Perhaps look into professional paper writing. I hear it can be pretty lucrative.
Professional paper writing? You mean college papers?
That’s what I was wondering. If so, that may not be a bad idea. I could do a good number on some classic English literature works (I read that shit for fun) or maybe even economics (I also read that shit for fun).
Thanks for the idea, Mojeaux!
Yes. People pay someone to write their research papers, theses, dissertations, journal articles, whatever. The Shadow Scholar
Check out glibs today and what do I see? Trashy’s Manassas pics and now this celebration of toxic masculinity. I mean, c’mon, would it kill you to do a diorama of The Women’s March? Think of how much fun you’d have painting all the little pussy hats.
It’s a Labor of Love, You Shitlord Jap lover,,,,,
He’d get to paint all the cute miniature signs and banners too!
Replace the Krauts with the women’s marchers and we’d have a great diorama. (Not that it’s not looking awesome as is)
An SJW protest, what an idea for a Diorama, Shit all over the place, and a Pigeon standing on top! I can do this!
Just do it.

I would if those girls were there.

In case you missed it. Meet Roe Jogan.

Jeez! no links to click on, yet you don’t comment?
I thought this was an open post!
Last night with the house guests, no time to post links. And I’m approaching drunk.
Damn nice diorama Yusef.

“It’s Time for the Press to Stop Complaining—And to Start Fighting Back
A nearly 50-year campaign of vilification, inspired by Fox News’s Roger Ailes, has left many Americans distrustful of media outlets. Now, journalists need to speak up for their work.

Fucking bozo salad. You edit 911 tapes, you fake photo shoots, you use fake sources, you cut off microphones, but it’s Roger Ailes fault?
What a steaming pile of horseshit. Oh, it’s The Atlantic.
It’s said how far it’s fallen from just a few years ago when it was Boston based. Not that the location had much to do with it directly, but shifting the offices was part of their big makeover.
Ahhh… wiki sez it’s now owned by Steve Jobs’s widow as part of her social change front. Where’s my shocked face…
I can’t find the original video where MSNBC-13’s entire story was about angry white men with guns, where they cropped the video so you couldn’t see he was black. I guess they had it taken down because it was so obviously fake.
