I’m not aware of much anti-Cruz animus outside of Democratic circles, Texas’ changing demographics have (so far) not translated into a Californian shift, and the Democratic momentum would have to be monumental to create a swing of D+8. “Hope” is the right word for it.

That race was much less favorable because Greg Abbott is more of a blandly inoffensive figure than Ted Cruz, but they still pumped that bitch the hell up despite the fact that she had no real chance to win. What are some recommendations, keeping in mind it needs to be readily available (I don’t want to have to go to Scotland to get it, although that would be fun)?
Babies don’t know that much about scotch, so feel free to buy them the cheap kind. It’s always good etiquette to bring along one of those bottles with a nipple on it.

well, just fyi = the price breaks on ‘good scotch’ tend to go, “$50 (shelf), $120-150 (top shelf), $250-300 (limited quantity, snooty bottle)”
the $200 price point is sort of a no-man’s land, tho there’s certainly stuff there. i personally think the drinkability doesn’t get hugely better after the first $100, but then i’m not a huge high-end scotch drinker. Of the ones i have drank frequently (Lagavulin, Balvenie, McCallan, Oban, Cardhu), i think McCallan has the most universally-appealing flavor profile. Or maybe that’s what a bartender told me once.
The 21 yr Balvenie is about $200 a bottle and is very, very good.

Unless the guy is a real scotch aficionado and you know he’s an Islay fan, steer away from those and go for more of a Highland. The oily/peaty/smoky Islay flava is usually an acquired taste. The Highlands are usually the e-z drinking scotches.
Personally, I’m not a big McCallan fan – its good, but there’s just others I like better. Glenmorangie is an excellent Highland scotch with a pretty broad selection. I also like Oban.
That’s the best kind of friend.
And Gilmore’s rec is a tried and true selection.
We disagree on a particular tropical fruit, but in this we are in complete agreement.
I love tropical fruit. In the appropriate context.
But I *always* love single malt scotch.
It depends on if he has a preference on style – I like Highland whisky, which would mean Macallan 12 as suggested above, or (my favorite) Glenmorangie 18. Islay lovers you can’t go wrong with Lagavulin 16 or Laphroaig 18. If you can sneak a look at his liquor cabinet, whatever he has up front and half full or less is probably his favorite.
That being said, I still consider myself a neophyte when it comes to whisky, and I still enjoy trying something new just as much as I enjoy drinking what I know I like.
He’s mostly a beer drinker (micro brews) but does drink liquor. For bourbon he likes Woodford over Beam and Makers. He’s the type of guy that would appreciate something like this because it’s not something he would typically buy for himself. The bottle might last 10 years or it might last the weekend.
Ah. Look for Springbank 15 year old. A very nice scotch that should meet his tastes and runs about $120.

What type of scotch does he like? I don’t like scotch aged more than 15-18 years because after that, it’s about the barrel. You’re price range puts you into the 21 spectrum.

Honestly none of them are particularly bad or particularly great when it comes to libertarianism. The closest we’ll get to “good” would be Kethledge. Barrett doesn’t have enough of a legislative history to judge her on, but she clerked for Scalia, so you can expect something similar out of her (which means deference to the Constitution unless it’s a Republican issue like the 4th Amendment). Kavanaugh clerked for Kennedy (and there are rumors that Kennedy became comfortable with retiring when Kavanaugh was added to the potential list, and there are even sketchier rumors that Kennedy was promised that Kavanaugh would be the pick when he decided to retire). He’s got a pretty long record on the DC Circuit and generally leans right (again like Scalia), but apparently Trump hates him because he worked for Dubya (plus he worked on Clinton’s impeachment). Kethledge’s record is pretty much equal to what Gorsuch’s record was before he became a SCOTUS justice.
Dark horse is Amul Thapar, who’s probably the best of the four but won’t get it. Unfortunately Justice Willett isn’t getting nominated no matter how much I beg.
None of it matters because even if the pick becomes a regular on the “right” side of the equation I’m convinced that the Chief Justice is going to slide left to take Kennedy’s role as the “centrist”, as he did in the Obamacare vote.
My money is on Barrett, because Trump knows what it will look like when the Dems start to trash a woman and a Catholic woman at that.

Exactly. Guests are amazed how non-aggressive my GSDs are because of their experiences with other poorly trained and bred ones. I always remind them that a protection dog should not be an aggressive dog. A million times so if attack-trained. That turns a protection dog into an extremely dangerous dog.
My wife’s cousin has a Belgian malinois that has turned ridiculously dangerous. Dangerous as in it has bit several innocent people, including mulitple children. Last month, my wife visited her family with our 3-year-old daughter and went outside for fresh air. The cousin’s family didn’t realize and let the dog on the other side of the house. Her uncle ran screaming at them to get inside as fast they can because he can’t control the dog. Of course the family just says he’s protective but a sweet dog.
That dog would have eaten lead if I been present and finally ended this scourge. I was very angry at my wife for letting her CCP lapse.
Infuriating. I did a shit-ton of obedience work with my GSD specifically because she was such a capable protector. One of my good friends was a K9 cop. His dog lived inside the house with his family and was just like any other pet, until it was time to go to work. Great dog and great handler.

As we did last time, we’re giving her one last day to see if we get a miracle. She’s getting her drugs on IV right now and maybe, just maybe, her condition improves enough that she will be able to eat again and regain enough strength to stand up and walk around.
I’m not expecting that, but I’m willing to go another grand in the hole to find out. Feels like I owe her at least that much. It’s only money anyway right?

This time is harder than last time because Lucy had been in declining health for a while. Knew she wasn’t going to have all that much time left. This time, on the other hand, has been very sudden. Baby is only 10, and just last Wednesday seemed to be perfectly fine. Four days later and she’s on death’s door. Would have likely died Sunday if we had waited to see our regular vet yesterday morning instead of going to the emergency vet and paying through the fucking nose.
I’ve taken a dog to the emergency vet, paid through the nose, and lost him anyway. The guild you’d feel if you didn’t try would be horrible.

That’s probably what is going to happen here too, and tomorrow I’ll probably be digging the second grave in 5 months, but if I didn’t give her the chance to recover I’d never forgive myself. Particularly making the decision over money. I don’t have the money to pay for this, and that’s not a minor consideration. I can’t keep her in the doggie hospital indefinitely. Still had to give her one more day before making the call.

That might be something we should consider. The expense was one of the reasons we figured it would be a while, since we’re going to have approximately $2800 to pay off, and that’s if she DOESN’T make it. If she does, you can tack on another $600 or so for bladder surgery to remove some stones, a little something extra we found out in the course of the rest of this.

We paid several thousand over my Doberman’s life trying to treat her horrible skin condition. She died way too young as well at 8 years old. It’s a really hard thing.
A lot to pay off indeed. We opened a Care Credit account, which gives us 6 months interest free. At that point, whatever balance is left we’ll put on the credit card because the rate with CC is enormous, like 28%.

We have a mini-Aussie. Twenty pounds soaking wet, total sweetheart, shy around strangers. One day we went to the cleaners to pick up some clothes & they couldn’t find one of my wife’s blouses. Did the usual when something is missing (‘are you sure you dropped it off?’, etc). Wife was PISSED when she came back to the truck, got in slammed the door, and was just seething.
While she’s telling me about it, one of the employees came out to say that they found it after all. Wife opens the door & gets out, doesn’t notice that our furball got out too. She ran in after my wife & was ready to confront whatever it was that’s a threat to her people.

Right? I don’t know really know the details, but I think at least one kid was paid off. Another might have be an illegal immigrant and the family didn’t want to risk anything. They lived in El Paso or San Antonio at the time on that one.
