Well that was a short weekend. And a short time at home for me. Back on the road again today for a few days at a minimum.
You know who wishes they could do what I have to do and spend a lot of time away from home? The Tampa Bay Lightning, that’s who. They got freight-trained in games 1 and 2 of the Wales Conference Finals, having fallen yesterday to the Capitals 6-2 at home. And yesterday probably wasn’t as close as the score indicated. The Capitals were toying with them. Just toying with them. Meanwhile, in the Campbell Conference Finals, the J-E-T-S, Jets! Jets! Jets! got off to a fantastic start against Army/Vegas on Saturday, doubling up the Black or Golden Knights 4-2 to take the first game of the series. The second game is tonight, and Vegas better pull their collective head out of their collective ass or they’re gonna find themselves in the same boat the Lightning are in. And that boat is sinking fast.
Over in the NBA, the Fighting LeBrons found out that a young Celtics team is probably not going to be intimidated by them as long as James is held to shooting outside under pressure. Game 1 was an ass-kicking by the Celtics. The WCF starts tonight.
And the Dodgers just got swept in a 4 game series at home. By the fucking Cincinnati Reds, who are arguably the worst team in baseball not residing on the South Side of Chicago. My what it must feel like to be a fan of that team, what with all the lofty expectations with everyone returning and the shit-talking about how the Astros stole the World Series last year. Hang in there, guys!
Oh, the Astros are in first in their division and have reeled off 6 of 7, by the way. And have given up a ridiculously low 111 runs so far this season, which is 40 better than their closest AL competitor. Huh, maybe defense (and a kickass rotation) does win games after all.
And in soccer, the EPL wrapped yesterday, with Swansea going down and Liverpool nabbing the fourth UCL spot for next year after thrashing Brighton. Mo Salah (Egyptian King) broke the EPL season goal-scoring record for 38 games and Chelsea and Arsenhole will be enjoying Thursday European football in the fall. In fact, the UCL, with the exception of Spurs, will reside exclusively in the northwest. Sorry, London, but your teams suck.
Born on this date were Star Wars creator (and destroyer) George Lucas, filmmaker Robert Zemeckis, Talking Head David Byrne, actor Tim Roth, bassist Mike Inez, annoying woman Cate Blanchett, and dickhead billionaire/conspirer with government Mark Zuckerberg.
Its also the day the first English settlement in the new world was established at Jamestown. And the day the delegates met in Philly to draw up the constitution (probably to boos, if I know anything about Philly-man). Lewis and Clark left St Louis for the west coast. Israel declared independence. And finally, the last Seinfeld episode aired and managed to disappoint everyone in America.
You get all that? Good. Because it ran on for too long anyway, so I ain’t got time to repeat it. Instead, I need to hurry on and get to…the links!
Play stupid games, like invading a sovereign nation, win stupid prizes. I swear, if they spent half the time worrying about their own infrastructure and economy rather than destroying someone else’s, they might have solved for cold fusion by now. Or at least figured out how to build a coal-powered electrical plant and operate it without outside help.
It would appear that advertisers are finally figuring out that people outside of NYC and California might actually consume goods and services and that targeting them might result in increased sales.
The result is that marketers are now making concerted efforts to learn more about Americans who live outside New York and California. HP’s recent research on marketing and political identity included visits to the swing-state cities of Cincinnati and Detroit. Late last year, the ad agency Y&R, using a division of the firm that had previously overseen cultural immersion projects in Myanmar and Ecuador, deployed strategists to immerse themselves in cities like Indianapolis and Milwaukee, Wis.
LOL, if your marketing arm is so out of touch with America that they have to do cultural immersion in Cincinnati and Milwaukee in order to connect with people outside the progressive bubbles of New York and Hollywood, you might want to cleanse the entire department with fire and start over.
Mother Nature continues to kick Hawaii in the balls. Maybe if the people there hadn’t decided to build their homes literally on top of an active volcano, I’d feel a little sympathy for them. But probably not.
Another fanatic in “enlightened” gun-free Paris decides to get stabby…and nobody is there to shoot the fucker dead until there’s a body count. Funny they don’t try this shit in Houston, Phoenix or Missoula.
Didn’t anybody teach this kid that the only winning move is not to play?
Thank God the leaders of the film industry are pledging to improve gender equality. Especially since, you know, they are probably the most morally bankrupt industry out there aside from the whores who go into politics.
That’s it. Except for this.
Go enjoy the start of the week.
I’m not even sure how to respond to that article about advertisers and middle America.
That’s…. astounding.
What’s the presumption here? That Trump voters are a different species? That anyone who doesn’t live in California or New York is a Trump voter?
Or is it just that your average Trump voter doesn’t give a shit about your incessant proggie virtue signaling and wants a product that works at a good price? How is that so foreign an idea as to be a revelation?
These people really are up their own assholes.
I would want my money back for the Myanmar and Ecuador trips. If they don’t understand Cincinnati why would I believe they understood anything about anywhere besides Cali, NY and DC.
What’s the point of learning to market to Myanmar and Ecuador in any case?
Do they massive amounts of free cash to spend or something?
They’re trying to corner the market on guinea pigs and …
Well I don’t have a clue as to what Myanmar has besides rice and wood.
Aftershave?
Seriously, does everything have to be politicized? If you are making an ad with young people, how about a prom, or football, baseball, softball, whatever game? (Without cross-dressing gender-benders)
That’s where they can’t help themselves, they’re afraid of getting Rheee’d at by the braying twits.
And if you look at the one commercial they focused on, HP, it fundamentally rejects politics. The people are screaming at each other and the little kid uses the HP printer to show them a whole bunch of non-political stuff about their relationship.
So, yeah.
I welcome it, maybe I’ll finally be able to get that HP branded spittoon to go along with my new PC. Oh happy day.
The thing I couldn’t help wondering reading that article is whether the company might not be better off looking for an ad agency outside of the coastal bubbles. You can bet that the people at ad agencies in, say, Houston or Cincinnati understand the thinking of the coastal bubbles entirely, due to the bubbles’ prevalence in mass media. The coastal agencies need to research Middle America.
Astounding? That’s one of them fancy East Coast liberal words ain’t it?

“The notion was one tribe looking forward and the other tribe looking back,” Antonio Lucio, HP’s marketing chief, said in an interview. One group “derived the benefit of the Obama years in economic terms, in terms of opportunity — they’re all about technology, open systems, open society, diversity. The other one is actually like: ‘We need a reset. We’ve lost our way.’”
Yep, HP Marketing has it all clear – good tribe, bad tribe.

“A report on their findings noted that the Americans they had spoken with identified more with their communities than the nation at large and “preferred the comfort of fiery conviction to the lucidity of cold truth.” The report added that marketers should be conscious of a changing definition of success in the nation and the power of “an emotional appeal made with gumption” rather than, say, promoting a product’s superior qualities or rankings.”
Game over, man! Game over!!!

I actually borrowed the rhyming part from random internet people, so I’m not going to take credit.
Along those lines, I love the look on the faces of recent tranplants from the PRK when I ask them about local campaign advertising. They get this look of stunned amazement and remark on how strange it is to hear candidates touting support for Trump, the Second Amendment, and the Constitution in general. And they all have at least one add with a gun somehow involved. Even the Democrats.
Its also the day the first English settlement in the new world was established at Jamestown.
And where are they now?
Given that they picked one of the most low lying areas in the region, they became mosquito food a long time ago.
No, that colony survived and many of their descendants are still alive.
Oh I know, I lived about a mile and a half from the site a few years back. I just always marvel at how they managed to pick a damn marsh to set up on. The place is crawling with bugs and snakes.

Maybe they should focus on learning how the product can make the customer’s life easier.

Green Beret waterboards himself in support of Trump’s CIA pick Gina Haspel
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2018/05/14/green-beret-waterboards-himself-in-support-trumps-cia-pick-gina-haspel.html
***
Green Beret and former UFC fighter Tim Kennedy waterboarded himself on Saturday to help prove that the controversial interrogation technique is not torture amid debate on Capitol Hill about President Trump’s pick to lead the CIA.
…
Kennedy said that waterboarding is not torture and just an uncomfortable experience.
“If I can change one person’s mind about what torture is and what I would do to protect American freedom, I will do this for years.”
He later shared an excerpt from the livestream on Facebook, showing him being heavily doused in water.
“We did this yesterday for almost 45 minutes. The average pour was anywhere from 10 to 60. They wouldn’t tell me when they were going to put the towel on. They would just smash it on my face and start pouring. You can’t hold your breath while they do it because the water runs down your sinuses,” Kennedy wrote. “The water run through your eyes, down your nose and pools at the back of your throat. It was a baptism in freedom. It’s not torture! Hell we had elk tacos and wine afterwards. Wake up people.”
***
I don’t think the US should waterboard, but I also don’t think it’s much worse from yelling at someone and slapping them.
If you could get a terrorist to spill the beans by yelling and slapping, why wouldn’t you?
One of these days you might actually acknowledge the content we provide, and not paste in some link, or stray thought.
I will be astounded that day.
Links?
There’s two issues with it.
One, when the people doing it are friendly, you know how and when it’s going to stop.
Two, it never brings actionable intelligence.
One – correct
Two – I believe they got quite a bit from Khalid Sheikh Muhammed. That is often cited in support.
Haspel appeared to be involved in moving people to black sites where shit a lot worse than water-boarding could possibly happen.
That should be where the focus is pointed.
Some industries still find outsourcing useful.
They stopped that when the “Buy American, Hire American” policy got put in place. Extrajudicial Interrogatory Agonization quality has suffered from the loss of experienced technicians.
The same assholes who voted to confirm the thuggish Brennan (much higher on the CIA food chain while waterboarding was a thing), are now against Haspel. Pardon me for not getting too excited.
Watching this old Red Cell video, you can see that they didn’t think waterboarding was a big deal – as the did to a “captured” naval Officer just to fuck with him.
Christopher Hitchens did the same thing and came to the opposite conclusion, FWIW.
You mean an academic has a lower tolerance for discomfort than an ex-special forces MMA fighter? Who would have guessed.
So torture is only torture if you haven’t been trained to resist torture?
Having seen the procedure, I don’t believe it’s torture.
Especially when compared to actual procedures of torture. Though we might run into an issue of conflicting definitions and semantics.
“Having seen the procedure, I don’t believe it’s torture.”
Having been waterboarded, I would like to point out that people nitpicking about this shit being torture or otherwise have lost perspective. People getting thrown of 4th floor roofs, burned and cut to ribbons, having their bones broken by people hitting them with hammers, and a slew of other real harmful and painful shit would not be remiss in pointing out that all the hand wringing about this weak as shit really misses the point. The people that do real torturing also must be having a good laugh at how stupid we are agonizing and arguing over this shit.
I guess that’s the next logical question from my perspective: how would you define torture? To my mind, torture isn’t defined by the amount of physical pain that is caused.
torture isn’t defined by the amount of physical pain that is caused.
really? How then? The word means deliberate infliction of severe pain.
That can lead someone to then make the case that life itself is torture considering how much discomfort it can be to just deal with daily shit…
Can some kid pissed that they got grounded accuse their parent of torturing them and destroying their life?
What about a husband/wife that’s tired of their partner’s constant headaches when they want some-some and feels they are about to go nuts?
If merely feeling discomfort or not liking something qualifies that as torture, even potentially, then one can understand when someone that has experienced some real nasty shit, might feel that their plight is being minimized.
Note that I am not condoning torture, but pointing out that when we blur the distinction between real horrific shit and stuff that just makes one uncomfortable or annoys, we are basically allowing people with nefarious purposes to basically hijack the discussion (like these tools that had no problem confirming that despicable asshole Brennan whom was far more involved with the enhanced interrogation shit and farmed out people to nations that did real torturing, but now object to Haskell because of it).
Arguing over how many angels can dance on the head of a pin while like the tools did in Byzantium, is doing none of us any good at a time we have the most corrupt people possible running the most powerful government agencies and using them to fuck over not just the citizens they disapprove of, but the choice of those citizens to actually go in and dismantling that state within a state.
@Jarflax: I’d make the argument that sleep deprivation is torture, and obviously psychological torture is a thing. Besides which, I’d also say that if your intent is to cause enough immediate “discomfort” to someone to get them to do something diametrically opposed to what they would want to do, then the thing that you’re doing to achieve that end is by definition torture regardless of whether or not it causes what bystanders would consider “excessive” pain. IOW, once you start talking about “we have to do unpleasant thing X to this person because nothing less extreme will convince him to do what we want” then the thing you’re talking about is probably torture.
@Alex: I’m making the opposite argument. I’m saying that it doesn’t pass the smell test to say, “Interrogation tactic X isn’t torture, it’s just a little unpleasant,” and at the same time say, “Interrogation tactic X is the last, best hope to get vital, life-saving, and time-sensitive information from an uncooperative prisoner.” I can sit here and think of more painful or more frightening things to do to someone, sure, but that doesn’t make anything less painful or frightening not torture. 350F is hot. 450F is hotter; that doesn’t make 350F cool.
“I can sit here and think of more painful or more frightening things to do to someone, sure, but that doesn’t make anything less painful or frightening not torture. 350F is hot. 450F is hotter; that doesn’t make 350F cool.”
Except to create a valid comparison, you should have used a different range of temperatures, and gone with 90F is hot, and 450F is hotter, making the gap and the effects far more obvious. Sleep deprivation or waterboarding sucks, but having some asshole drive nails through your ball sack (and I know some people pay for that shit to be done to them) or use pliers to pull your teeth, let alone saw your fucking head off with a dull knife, are on a completely other level.
You can certainly argue about what constitutes severe pain, ad where the line is across which something becomes torture, but that very argument means you are defining torture by the amount of pain caused. Sleep deprivation eventually becomes physically unendurable, and at some point along that curve I would say it becomes torture. As to psychological torture I’m going to need a concrete example before I address it because the term is often used metaphorically.
“As to psychological torture I’m going to need a concrete example before I address it because the term is often used metaphorically.”
I think one of the more commonly used one is to stage an execution of a prisoner – right up to the moment they would be killed…then drag back to the cell. Repeat process X number of times.
I would say that is not torture, but that does not mean I think it should be allowed. The word torture does not mean “any interrogation technique that should be banned.”
A bit late to this party, but I don’t think waterboading is torture. I’ve participated in waterboarding several people, and had it briefly done to me before participating in doing it to someone else. So yes, people had volunteered before hand and could use their safeword/ball in their hand to let go to end it and knew they could stop it at any point, so that’s a difference between what I’ve done and the real thing.
At the end of the day it does not necessarily leave any lasting damage or need for medical care, unlike pulling fingernails or hooking people up to car batteries. I don’t know, when people participate in it voluntarily as protests and recreation, I have a hard time thinking of it as torture. I also realize I have a somewhat skewed perspective about pain and the body’s ability to tolerate it. I can see how others view it as torture though I see a difference between this and real torture
Should we use it? For law enforcement? Hell no. It is painful and dangerous and frightening. On lawful enemy combatants? Again, no, I think it goes too far because it does have risks. On terrorists? Esp. someone with high value information that has a short shelf life? I find it harder for me to give a damn about them or their rights. Not very libertarian of me, I suppose, but once you decide it is okay to target civilians to get your way politically, I think you’ve violated the NAP, and I don’t believe in proportionality.
If it isn’t torture, if it’s just “an uncomfortable experience”, then why is it supposedly the last and best tactic we have to get vital information when time is of the essence? Having a shed cat claw in your sock is uncomfortable. Church pews are uncomfortable. Ill-fitting suits are uncomfortable. I am not seeing any description of how waterboarding works that doesn’t make it seem in any way distinct from drowning, and that blows right past uncomfortable in my book. Have a discussion about whether or not torture is morally acceptable or whether it’s effective, but don’t try to claim that something which is clearly intended to be torturous is really no different than a vigorous noogie.
Hear hear.
Vigorous Noogie = my new band name.
Kennedy routinely gets his head kicked in. I’m not sure we should be using him at the standard-bearer for pain tolerance.
Cannes has come under criticism for years for not selecting films from more women directors.
Cannes can’t can cans.
Cannes should shoot back and criticize their critics for complaining instead of making films worth watching.
I’m confused. Not worth watching?
“Don’t like the lack of your identity group? Stop complaining, start filming, eventually you might make something worth watching”.
But it’s Cannes, so it won’t be shown there anyway.
Most of the good female directors for whatever reason work in TV.
“Director” is not one of the people I notice in association with film/TV projects. I know they play a role, and opinions as to the importance of that role vary wildly, but I rarely notice them.

Definitely not. Just as with people who build in flood plains, you pay your money and take your chances. No bailouts.
I mean, the volcano has been there for quite some time, so it’s not like they didn’t have a heads-up.
The problem is that people seem to forget natural cycles don’t get measured in months or years, and even going with decades or centuries, sets you up to not see the big picture. Volcanoes are gonna volcano.
There are Italians to whom that lesson would also apply, I think.
Shit, there are people everywhere that this lesson should apply to. The one constant in nature is that shit changes, and often it does so violently.
Morning Glibs, hope all is well in y’all’s lives. Man those marketers can get fucked.
I remember reading somewhere that product research and marketing campaigns used to always start in Columbus, as that small city was considered the best microcosm of wider America. Wonder when that was left behind to focus on the coasts.
“Why should we have to go out to Ohio? We know better than them what they need.”
Columbus is now not small, is infected with government and university types.
I thought the old standard was “how is this going to play in Peoria (IL)?”
As someone who lives in “middle of nowhere” Ohio, I will say that a lot of people are starting to think of Columbus as a sort of statewide hipster Mecca.
It’s almost having an NYC-like effect: People visit there and come back with the attitude that every other place in the state sucks, and people are stupid and unsophisticated for not having that same opinion.
(note: I’m not trashing New York or people from New York – I’m trashing people who go around talking shit on every non-New York place, which is annoyingly common here in Ohio)
As a lifelong resident of the great state of New York – I’m the first to talk shit about this garbage heap. That said, I didn’t find Ohio to be any better. Though my opinion may have been sullied by getting lost in Amish country and then having the Cleveland hotel valet lose my car key (they eventually found it, but I was at an IHOP in Pennsylvania by then)
Though my opinion may have been sullied by getting lost in Amish country
That’s my favorite part about Ohio. I spent a very fun summer in Amish country building a house and felling trees.
From TOS: Undocumented Immigrants Make America Safer. WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY. From Chapman, of course.
I can’t remember ever reading a Chapman article where his basic premise wasn’t “Here’s why ‘x’ statist position is actually the most libertarian position.” I do not miss the mental gymnastics done over at TOS to attempt to define the ‘correct’ opinions.
Do and say whatever you have to to get invited to the cocktail parties…
Not only did Mueller indict a ham sandwich, he indicted one that didn’t exist during the 2016 election.
I see my browser if fucking with me again.
As if any further evidence was needed that this whole thing is a damn farce.
It’s more than a farce: it is a desperate attempt at stonewalling and hiding the fact that these people spent years doing the shit Nixon was run out of office for only asking for. These crooks that are running a shadow government are hoping a blue wave in November will take the spotlight of all the criminal activities they were involved in during the Obama years.
“Bout time!”

“Attorney Eric Dubelier speaks on behalf of Concord Management. Dubelier evinces a sardonic attitude to the case. When discussion turns to the question whether he represents Concord Catering (another charged Russian entity), Dubelier states: “I think we’re dealing with the government having indicted the proverbial ham sandwich. That company didn’t exist as a legal entity during the time period alleged by the government.””
Has Chapman ever written anything good? It seems everything he writes is terrible garbage.
I couldn’t resist perusing the comments. Ol’ Hihn never lets me down. He’s actually pretty lucid today and pretty straightforward about his love of the state: Imma leave this here:
Hihn responding to me on an article about pharma regs:
“It’s kinda stoopid to blame government regulation, when it’s OVER-regulation — which is WHY we have such higher drug prices here … something else too complex for our bellowing President.”
Ah.
It must be performance art.
I think he can’t get his med dosages right. Some days it’s ‘Old Man yells at cloud,’ other days it’s ‘Old man yells at cloud about why being a 90’s Democrat is the only legitimate libertarian position.’ It’s derpity-delicious either way.
I miss laughing at Hihn. I haven’t been on Reason since new job. I don’t want to sully this sweet 2 monitor set up with progressive garbage disguised as libertarian thought.
I only visit when someone links to it here. I almost always skip the article and briefly skim the comments. It makes me appreciate this place even more every time I do it. If Glibs had never happened I don’t think I’d still be over at TOS. This is objectively better.

The underlying premise that illegal immigration does not necessarily increase violent crime may be true, but holy hell does Chapman know how to fuck up an argument.
Of course if you look at the Cato study often cited to claim that illegal immigrants do not commit crime at a greater rate than native born Americans, you see that first they use crime rate among all immigrants, limping illegal and legal together, and then you see that they compare crime rate between immigrants and the same socio-economic cohort of Americans. So they actually commit crime at a rate no greater than that of the worst poverty-stricken Hood in Baltimore or Chicago.
Great.
Do you have a reference on that? I’d like to read it.
Here’s a start. You can also slog through the studies and citations in the studies on Cato’s website, but they do their best to hide it.
Thanks
The cohorts of legal immigrants and illegal aliens are nothing alike. Lumping fence hoppers with people who followed proper procedure is unconscionable. Especially since their behaviour and criminality levels are nothing alike.
Exactly. That’s all of the studies cite stats for “immigrants” to intentionally obscure this reality.
The whole argument is about deception and manipulating perspective. Why do you think these lawbreakers are the called “undocumented” instead of border jumping criminals by the people that want the welfare state and open borders? It’s the same reason that these people lump fire arms suicides into gun crime stats: to confound the people less likely to try and get the facts themselves and hopefully fuck everyone over before anyone gets wiser to whatever shit they are doing is.
Statistics aside, it makes perfect sense that someone who has invested time, effort, and finances to migrate to this country legally would be more careful about not violating the laws here, while someone who has violated laws to get or stay here would continue to do so.
Absolutely. I’m the a model citizen. Foreign residents here have a much lower crime rate than the native population.
Chapman is a worthless piece of flotsam. What he writes is too stupid to even rebut. Safer than what? Safer than legal immigrants? What fucking logic makes that work?
“Normally in focus groups, you put like-minded people together and you get some insights,” Mr. Lucio said. “Here, you’re putting the reds and the blues together and you allow them to fight it out.”

That can still be corrected with implants. There is no solution to an evil printer besides Samir’s tactic above.
Turns out there is a way to charge my fully-dead gopro battery. The problem I’d plugged it into a USB port that was too smart for it’s own good. Unless it gets an answer to the data query, it shuts off the power channel. Plugging directly into the dumbest of dumb wall transformers charged the battery.
I’m having that problem with a $100 Ryobi 40v trimmer battery, as a matter of fact. I may be reduced to jumping it with another battery here pretty soon.
Continuation from an interesting bit I found at Slate Star Codex last night.
Scott Alexander reviews a book on the history of the people, who even moreso than Karl Marx, are responsible for making socialism the widely popular abomination that it is.
http://slatestarcodex.com/2018/04/30/book-review-history-of-the-fabian-society/
Marx was the engineer, Frankfurt School was marketing and the Fabians were sales.
That’s some great enacted labour, totally stealing that.
Stealing that. /flips a CANADIAN quarter.
Romney isn’t a fan of the pastor that’s leading the prayer for the dedication of the new embassy in Jerusalem.
And? If you asked most evangelicals about Mormonism, they’ll tell you it ain’t real Christianity and will probably use the term cult too. Same thing with the Jew quote, given the whole “no one comes to the Father except through me” bit Jesus said. As for Islam, how is that even remotely controversial? How about you piss off back where you came from Romney. No one cares about you anymore.
He must be running for another lucrative government job and needs to grandstand to get it, is my guess of why he has opened his clap trap yet again…
The kid in Concord is described in the article as a ‘hacker’. I always associated hacking with some crazy coding skills, not tricking a teacher into giving up their login and password.
Either way, Ferris did it first. Try something new, kids.
My hacking skills end at always guessing the password is Podesta.
+1 Twist & Shout and swing batta-batta-batta-batta.
Wondering if the kid could do a little retro grade changing? Asking for a friend.
Actually, the kid who got the “do not touch a computer or touch-tone phone” sentence that was used as the basis for the movie Hackers was mostly just a great con-man and would call people up and get them to give him what he needed. He does IT security now. He says even today, he’ll spend six weeks with a CFO/CIO and then call the CFO as an airline, and the CFO will send an email to his/her admin telling them to call this number back and give them the corporate credit card number.

It’s Cargo Cult sociology.
A million years ago, when I took Skinnerian behaviorism in college (flunked it, because I intentionally refused to push the little lever on the treat dispenser… where was I?) there was a thing they referred to as “pigeon superstition”. Sometimes the pigeons would pick up some inconsequential act as part of the routine, like turning to the left, or fluffing their wings, or tipping their heads, just prior to hitting the treat bar, and incorporate it into the trained behavior which resulted in getting a reward.
That’s what that story made me think of. Some marketing guru, in a fit of drunken inspiration in a hipster bar in downtown Injanoplace (they have those, y’know) will come up with a multi-million-dollar ad campaign based on something he heard or saw which is utterly meaningless and irrelevant to the business of selling door stops to people who just don’t want to keep bumping into the goddam door.
Lol sounds about right, it sums up what I have seen of Mad Men.
No matter how many volcanoes or solar flares or any other of Mother Nature’s tricks are hurled against us, it will always be too many humans, too much capitalism, and too much global warming.
I can’t wait for a massive volcanic event along the lines of Krakatoa or one of the unpronounceables in Iceland. Maybe another ice age will get them to shut the f up.
No, only through sacrificing them to Pele can their cries be silenced!
You don’t even need a natural disaster to show up the environmentalists – just make them live in some less developed part of the world for a week. They’d be screaming and crying to come back to their cozy world of automobiles, air conditioning, and upscale food marts.

Three long firearms found at the property were licensed to Mr Miles, they say.
WE NEED GUN REGISTRATION
If they banned all guns this would not have happened.
Man, the lefty media is really pushing this whole McCain remark deal. Someone might have said “he’s dying anyway.” Oh, how offensive! (falls on fainting couch) Big fucking deal. Guess what, most of us think McCain is a fucking shitbag and don’t give a rat’s ass if someone in the White House might have said something that’s frankly not even actually offensive.
Some of us may even have uttered “Why is he still here?” at some point.
I guess they really think this’ll push people away from Trump. As though there’s a significant portion of people that still fall for the whole “War Hero who suffered torture for your freedom” line that’s been used to excuse him being a shitbag his whole life.
I found that remark reassuring – that there are some normal people working in the White House.
Man, the lefty media is really pushing this whole McCain remark deal.
They’re going to keep trying to push it. I seriously doubt it’s going to get much traction. They’ve been making roughly comparable observations about politicians for the last twenty years.
And it’s perfectly understandable from the calculation of politics. Sen. McCain’s ability to grant promised rewards and enact threatened punishments is now wildly curtailed, soon to go to exactly zero. Anyone who thinks these facts aren’t major elements in anyone in D.C.’s calculations with regard to the Senator are hopelessly naive and probably haven’t much followed McCain’s career.
They all said worse things about him in 2008.
This lady pulls her heater and ventilates a guy trying to rob women and children. She’s an off-duty cop in Brazil, but still a hell of a video.
TRIGGER WARNING! Seriously, dude gets shot twice and dies on video.
Thanks JB.
Drake – You might want to mention something like that in future.
The article itself is fine. just thought it should be mentioned before watching the embedded video.
Heater = gun
Ventilate = shoot holes through something
I guess I could have skipped the Mickey Spillane terminology, but I thought I was pretty clear.
A woman shoots a man committing armed robbery. He falls down in the street and bleeds – probably to death.
It also seemed pretty obvious to me that a guy got shot. It was a brutal video, but the woman was awesome.
It is the death part, dude.
Happy ending?
Seemed pretty clear from your post to me as well. You described what happened in the video, and that it was a video…
I know someone got shot, Jarflax. Some people (me included) might wish to be informed that the guy who got shot died in the video as well. Just good manners to mention things like “death” or “NSFW” and the like.
Ok, I’ve watched this 4 times now and must be missing something. The guy is still alive when the video clip ends. His head is lifted, he has just rolled away, he does not die during the video.
This is what I saw. I don’t really go looking for death much these days….so I didn’t go watch.
Budd Dwyer approves.
He didn’t die on the video.
He died at the hospital. It appears to me she put a shot through his gut that nicked his spine.
I have been assured that this never happens.
You should check out Active Self Protection’s youtube channel.
They analyzed the video and had some significant criticisms:
1) She drove in, which caught his attention and put her gun in range for him to grab it.
2) Her backstop in her first shot was a mother and child.
3) Several signs that she wasn’t well trained with the use of her handgun
The attaboys
1) Good surreptitious draw.
2) Good use of lateral movement -she hit him with all three rounds, and he missed with his two shots.
I was no fan of Trump before, but now I know he’s truly a monster who must be stopped at all costs
Bad move – don’t get between a Scot and his or her IRN-Bru!
I tried one when I was there. Nasty.
Agreed. I got a can of it at Jungle Jim’s International Market… It tasted like extremely sugary bubble gum.
When I was buying some for the Scots I was assigned to, I asked the clerk about it…he said, “You will love it or hate it. One or the other.”
I didn’t love it.
I’ve heard that it explains a great deal about the state of modern Scotland.

GOP tax cut not why economy is booming
I don’t give a damn! The government is stealing less from me. Now let’s cut spending then cut more taxes!
Economists are rolling their eyes at candidates’ claims.
Right off the bat with passive aggressive BS.
Do these “Economists” include those who predicted disaster from tax cuts and expected a government stimulus to have a magic multiplier effect?
Economists think it’s adorable that you think the multiplier effect is magic
/Politico
It probably is too early to attribute all of the current expansion to the tax cuts, but at least one of these pronouncements have the distinct odor of bovine fecal matter:
It’s just way too early to see any kind of evidence of faster growth, faster investment, more labor supply — any of that stuff,”
You know, except for the fact that labor participation has begun trending upward. But, let’s ignore that.
The fact is that a lot of this analysis ignores rational expectations. Companies tend to make decisions on a forward looking basis. They anticipate the business environment a quarter or two out. And business confidence has been on an upswing for a while now.
Don’t you know that the righteous eye-roll is the new instant debate winner?
Unfortunately, it is with a lot of people.
I thought the standard debate closer was some string of faux-indignation phrases like, “Really? Wow! I mean, seriously!”
Too many words. Nobody has time to listen to all that. I can’t do the eye-roll thing well, so I just fire double middle fingers at my interlocutors for the win.
Let me guess: it’s actually due to Obama’s policies, which somehow never had this result over the course of eight years and which Trump has mostly undone.
Technically, the undoing of Obama’s policies contributes to the boom, so they get credit for it happening now instead of then.
^^^THIS^^^
The major impetus for this shift can be laid at the feet of the undoing of a lot of the “help government pick winners & losers regulation” of Obama years.
To be fair there are probably multiple factors at play. Not to say tax cuts did not have some role but still hard to quantify
Confidence is a thing. Leave businesses alone and let them keep more of their money and good things happen.
Regardless of their argument, I consider the source and dismiss it out of hand. This is what happens when you’ve lost your credibility. What aren’t they telling us? As a result of its research, HP will now design ads with consumers’ political leaning in mind — the same way it considers age, ethnicity and income when formulating its marketing plans, the company said in a report last month.
Ooh, I hope they make an ad featuring a rainbow party (not that kind, you perverts!) of teenagers brainstorming and printing stuff and collaborating on what might be The Most Important Thing Ever.
Then, at the end, they can show them marching in a “Give Up Your Guns!” rally. With signs and posters printed on their HP printers.

How #MeToo revealed the central rift within feminism today
It’s not a generational divide, but rather a split between two competing visions of feminism – social and individualist.

I’ve argued for a while that women who believed in “individualist feminism” were deluding themselves, that they were trying to tie individualism to a fundamentally collectivist movement. Seems the feminist movement is pushing the same realization.

Ergo, socialism still fails to attract support from the proletariat. And yet the rich loves them some socialism.
Especially when that socialism helps them be the winner in the game where that government socialism’s main job is to use the force of government entities to pick winners & losers…

https://www.thedailybeast.com/how-the-democrats-could-thwart-trumps-supreme-court-takeover
An idiot for the Daily Beast begs Democrats to pack the court, because Drumpf is remaking the judiciary.
The author, who no doubt has just learned that Congress can change the number of justices on any federal court, talks about how sometimes court packing is done by authoritarians and, of course, his example is Orban in Hungary. It should be noted that Orban has won three consecutive elections and his party currently controls 2/3 of parliament. He and his party merely instituted a mandatory retirement age for justices (a practice that is not uncommon at all in the Western world) and are replacing these justices with their own picks. Seems like that is the democratic process working as intended. If Democrats were to stack the court now, of course, it wouldn’t be totalitarian, he argues, but rather “correcting an injustice” (MERRICK GARLAND!).
What is the dumbest part of his whole article (besides the asinine premise)? The numb skull is writing about court packing and doesn’t mention FDR’s attempt to pack the court in the 1930’s once. And how would FDR’s attempt have been any different from what this author is suggesting or what Orban in Hungary has done?
So, that’s it. Pack it in. Vox is going to have to work double time in order to out stupid this article. I hereby declare this to be the dumbest article written by a historically ignorant jackass of the entire month. Congrats, douchebag.
Progressive really are ignorant evil twits.

That Politico thing about the tax cuts is quite something.
That’s because the economy was already strong before the law passed, so some of the good news would have happened even if the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act was never approved.
They also see the economy getting a boost from a completely separate and largely overlooked law Congress recently OK’d: A nearly $400 billion spending increase opposed by many Republicans that some experts say will do more for growth, at least in the short term, than the tax cuts.
There’s your multiplizer! Government spending is the best spending.
And then we get:
Even conservative economists are waving off the bonuses touted by lawmakers as a poor gauge of the law’s impact.
“I assume those things are bonuses that [companies] would have done because of the tighter labor market that now exists anyway that they are now attributing to the tax cut for PR reasons or to curry favor with the president,” said Alan Viard, an American Enterprise Institute economist.
Official data shows the bonuses are dwarfed by total wages paid. Bonuses totaled $2.5 billion in the first quarter of this year, according to the federal government’s Bureau of Economic Analysis. More than $8 trillion was paid in salaries and wages during that period.
Change happens at the margin. These are probably a lot of the same people who laughed at Wilbur Ross for saying a penny (or less) added to the cost of a tin can isn’t important, and won’t affect behavior.

Terrible decision making, like adopting a socialist command and control economy?

DO NOT TRY TO FUCK OVER JORDAN PETERSON…. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!!
A writer for a magazine with aJewish audience wrote a piece implying that Jordan Peterson was encouraging anti-semitism. The article was the usual hatchet job with a few quotes from Peterson and other intellectuals worrying about his incindiery rhetoric, implying that he didn’t give a dman about the holocaust. Only problem is… 1) Peterson had gave them a significant interview, and 2) he had email exchanges where he documented what he wrote about the holocaust and his warnings about the dangers of fascism.
All of this stuff went to the cutting room floor, since it didn’t serve the narrative. They did however, put a picture of Peterson and Hitler juxtaposed and implied that Peterson was giving ideological cover to make nazism seem acceptable.
Peterson was infurated and confronted them. They invited him to reply, and they promised that they would publish it or link to it if he put it online on his own blog. So he published his own rebuttal, including the emails and a description of the interview. It’s like a cannon firing grape shot.

Monopsonists
According to one estimate, because the American economy is so dominated by a few large employers, employment in the United States is 5 to 18 percent lower than it would be otherwise, and wages are between 13 and 31 percent lower.
And yet despite this trove of evidence, a review of antitrust cases found that no court has ever stopped a merger on the grounds that eliminating an employer hurts workers.
Concentration was once seen as dangerous in and of itself because it handed companies too much power. But in recent decades, antitrust regulators have effectively limited themselves to only one question: Will customers pay more? Today, that answer can’t provide a full picture of whether a merger will harm the economy.
I wonder how much time and energy those economists have devoted to studying the effects of government regulation and interference in the marketplace, and how compliance demands breed large numbers of employees who are a net drag on wealth creation. Consolidation is driven at least in part by this, in my view. I’d be fascinated to hear what sort of policies those academic economists would propose which might increase the number of stable small and mid size enterprises.
There’s also that pesky issue of rising labor costs being passed on to the consumer.
Legalize drugs, gambling, and prostitution. Cut red tape. Etc.

““In the aftermath, the California Highway Patrol and Sacramento District Attorney have done nothing to prosecute the fascists who attempted to murder people in Sacramento,” the motion to dismiss read.
The motion to dismiss said the agencies participated in a “cover-up” by “interrogating and harassing” the counterprotesters while they were still in the hospital. The police did not attempt to pursue charges against the neo-Nazis, the motion said, despite evidence that they were armed with knives.
The prosecutor argued that there was no basis to dismiss these charges, saying that the fact that others had not been charged with crimes did not exempt Felarca from prosecution.
“Even if the extraordinary allegations of bias and collusion posited by the defense in their motion to dismiss were true, and they are not, they would have no bearing on the guilt or innocence of the defendants currently before the court,” read the DA’s opposition to the motion.”

The apology should focus on Lebow’s actions, rather than Sharoni’s perceptions of them, it said, adding that if he failed to comply, the executive committee would consider appropriate sanctions.
Lebow refused. He also sent an email to colleagues calling his treatment “a horrifying and chilling example of political correctness” that “encourages others to censor their remarks for fear of retribution.” In an email to The Chronicle on Sunday, Lebow said he made the joke “to relieve the slight claustrophobia I felt in such a crowded lift.”
This story was covered, but I believe this is a follow-up. Wrongthink must be rooted out and punished without mercy. Repent your sins. Beg for forgiveness at the altar of Our Lady of Perpetual Grievance.
The only fuckin thing I need from a movie is a good script, good actors, and decent production design.
Who the hell sits in a movie counting how many of each gender/race/whatever are in it? Oh, right. Asshole SJWs. And journalists.
You forgot nudity.

But tell us how you really feel.
Sharoni told The Chronicle that the real chilling effect will be against people who experience and report sexual harassment.
“For decades, women and other marginalized groups in the academy had to put up with white men who decided what counts as a violation and what is ‘frivolous,’” she wrote in an email. “As someone who has dedicated her life to confronting sexism (and other forms of discrimination and oppression) in academic spaces, I cannot and will not remain silent when misogyny is at play.”
Enjoy your grey, joyless existence, you pompous self obsessed twat.
Except she didn’t confront him, to his face, in the moment. Undoubtedly she giggled awkwardly, then ran to tell Mommy what had happened with the mean man and the elevator.
She said herself she is disappointed that she didn’t confront him right hen and there.
Thanks for that. 🙂

TW: don’t link on that link
a) it’s basic fucking hygiene not to let your blood get everywhere, regardless of whether it came from your vag or a cut on your arm
b) take it from someone who has 35 years’ experience – menstruation is disgusting. I sincerely wish it would stop.
Mu wife had a hysterectomy two months ago. This weekend I reminded her that she has now missed her period two months in row. She was happy. She hated her period. She didn’t even cramp or pms too bad. She hated the blood.
My wife had a hysterectomy 20+ years ago.
I don’t recall her ever complaining about not menstruating any more.
My own dear Mrs. Animal had one about 20 years since (pre-cancerous uterine lesions) and our oldest daughter about 5 years ago (anemia that basically led to her period lasting all month.)
Both of them are freaking delighted with not having periods.
My wife had a uterine ablation and has basically not had a period in about 3 years. She loves it.

“Seattle business called discriminatory for Mother’s Day sale
Seattle, the city where everything is turned into a social justice cause, claimed another victim with petty and annoying complaints.
Ian Eisenberg, owner of Uncle Ike’s, a pot shop, was trying to treat moms of his business the way most others do for Mother’s Day. His business recently emailed their customers an offer of 20 percent off their total purchase if they brought in their mothers. Of course, it’s in good fun and an innocuous gimmick. Unless you’re looking to be outraged.
A customer unhappy with the gimmick sent in her complaint, which I got my hands on:
“I understand that you run a business and that not everybody is me, however for people like me without family deals like this feel discriminatory. Where’s the orphan as an adult 20% off?”
Somewhat ironically, if Eisenberg were to offer an “orphan as an adult sale,” he’d then likely get some complaint from a customer who isn’t an orphan. There’s no winning.
When I asked Eisenberg about the complaint, he didn’t want to out the customer but did call out this culture of always feigning outrage.
“It seems like people are waking up looking for something to be outraged about,” he told me. “Not upset, not intellectually challenged, but outraged! In order to be cool in their peer group, they have to have an enemy. It doesn’t matter that the enemy is 90 percent their ally but whatever small slight they can find is enough to set them off?”

“The Story Behind This Photo of Stormy Daniels as the Virgin Mary
Sixteen years ago, artist Nika Nesgoda made a series of Cibachrome photographs, in which — taking a page from Caravaggio — she recreated iconic paintings of the Virgin Mary using adult film actors as models. There was no way she could have predicted that she’d wake up one day to find that one of her former models, Stormy Daniels, was at the center of a political, cultural, legal maelstrom that could alter the course of American presidential history, or at least the cold open of Saturday Night Live.
But then again, who could have predicted any of the events of the last two years? Or two days. Or two hours. So let’s try to remember 2002, when we were still a nation capable of shock. Back then, Nesgoda’s printer refused to make prints of her Virgin Mary photographs. Realizing that he must have recognized her models from their day jobs, Nesgoda was embarrassed before thinking, Hey, wait a minute. This man is judging me?
We can maybe forgive the printer’s prudishness. This was long before a site called Pornhub had 28.5 billion visits a year, and before we talked about Game of Thrones sex scenes over dinner, and certainly before we had a President admitting on Twitter to paying hush money to a porn star just before commemorating the National Day of Prayer in the Rose Garden (where he said, rather hopefully: “America is a nation of believers, right?”).”

Just weighed myself for the first time in probably 3 years. A svelte 185 lbs. Down from the 225 I was carrying back in March 2013, when I realized I was a fat drunken idiot.
Now I’m just a drunken idiot.
Congrats!
I have this horrifying, sinking feeling that I might not be an idiot, but that there might be a lot of people even dumber than me instead.
Don’t sell yourself short. You are a tremendous idiot.
That just makes it worse, becuase I’ve been noticing that there are a good many people that are… er… cognitively stagnant in comparison.
I had the self image of being ‘average’, with the general expectation that at least half the people I’m interacting with will be smarter than me. It distresses me that they can’t meet this low bar.
You’re surprised that many people drawn to government employment are of below average intelligence?
It’s not just my co-workers – it’s the general public too.
Good job!
Awesome! There’s no better feeling than working hard and seeing the results.
I used to be 225, then I started running and lifting weights and dropped down to 173 at the lowest. Then I started focusing more on lifting weights and I got up to 225 again, but this time it’s mostly muscle.
Nice work, EDG!
By the way, Jangle Noise kept me company yesterday while working in the garage. Listened to the entire thing. It’s really fucking good and I appreciate you taking the time to put it together.
Thanks! I’ve got a whole batch of songs I’m going to add, probably Friday.
Glad you’re liking it.
Shameless plug: Check out my Spotify play list Jangle Noise. Over 7 hours of guitar based rock and roll. Jangly sweet to noisy and scratchy, over 100 songs from off the beaten path right into your earholes. Give it a try!!

Just curious; do you listen straight through from the beginning? Shuffle play?
In the past I hit shuffle. Yesterday I went in order. I heard a lot I don’t recall hearing in other listenings.
Your inclusion of Cortez The Killer was inspired – I love that song! This is a cool cover with some excellent guitar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQVXQArandw
Nice!! I think the new GlibFit starts Friday?? *looks toward the admins and Leap for confirmation*

“The Trump administration, which openly supports Israel’s alt-right government, continues years of U.S. coddling: Opinion”
https://twitter.com/haaretzcom/status/995694658465366017
So wait – I thought the alt-right was Nazism, so that means that Israel is… Or, Israel hates the- I mean, the Jews are in control of… Fuck, politics is hard.
Apparently Haaretz’s New York correspondent got a hold of the Tweeters account.
Ha’aretz makes the NYT look moderate. Almost nobody reads it domestically, but for some inexplicable reason it always seems to be the go-to paper for international media looking for a quote to show “see, even Israelis think x, y, or z!”
Don’t sell yourself short. You are a tremendous idiot.
“The world needs ditchdiggers, too.”
Thank goodness or I would have no marketable skills.
My marketable skills are in fields I’d rather not be employed in – ie, Computing, Bureaucracy.
I can’t dig a ditch and not have it or me collapse before it’s done.
Actually I’m in the same boat as well.
Job security, FTW?
I see no signs of NYS bureaucracy or computing use going down.
There’s job security on one hand, and job satisfaction on the other.
I also had a knowledge transfer session this morning where I had to try to bring other technical staff up to speed with some of my work. We ran out of time for what I regarded as a ‘modest’ slice. I mistook it for simple because I’d implemented it and my brain shortcuts to the answer when an issue arises.
“Authorities credited Dug, a police dog who’s specially trained to locate electronic devices, in assisting the investigation. Police said Dug located an SD card in a tissue box that helped lead to the arrest.”
Are you fucking kidding me?
Please tell me they’re challenging this in court and the judge is laughing at the cops… please… even if you have to lie to me.
“Dogs are magic machines”
“We’ve got a dog back there that poops probable cause.”
I was watching LivePD the other day and they had one of the K9s sniffing someone’s car. The dog showed absolutely no interest in anything in the car, and the handler had to keep prompting him to go sniff again.
Then the handler says to the camera: “you can see he was really focused on the front passenger’s seat”.
Fuck the cops.
