Police use dead manβs fingers to try to unlock his iPhone
The dead have no privacy rights.
Corpses canβt assert privacy rights in courts. But they can unlock their iPhones with fingerprint authentication, and that comes in mighty handy when police need to investigate who killed them or who convinced them to go on a stabbing spree with a butcherβs knife.
Forbes has published a report of what it says is the first known case of police using a dead manβs fingerprints in their efforts to get past the protection of Appleβs Touch ID authentication technology.
Note that a previous case from July 2016 involved police making a cast from a dead manβs prints, but not from his actual fingers. They asked for 3D prints to be made from fingerprints they already had on file from having previously booked him.
The landmark case involving actual dead fingers is that of Abdul Razak Ali Artan, an 18-year-old Somali immigrant who plowed his car into a group of people on the Ohio State University campus, attacked victims with a butcherβs knife, and was shot dead by police in November 2016.
No one–living or dead–has privacy rights to their phones anyway. I mean, you don’t see them mentioned in the 4th Amendment, do you?
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
If The Founders wanted people to have privacy with respect to phones, they would have mentionedΒ them. “Persons, houses, papers, and effects.” A phone is not a person, a house, nor made of paper. I guess you could make some sort of argument that a phone is an “effect,” but who even knows nowadays what that word meant 200 years ago? The Founders sure couldn’t have meant high-powered pocket computers with large-capacity memory storage because those thingsΒ didn’t exist. QED, bitches.

Nickelodeon Parts Ways With Producer Dan Schneider
Nickelodeon and prolific TV producer Dan Schneider have opted to end their longtime partnership.
“Following many conversations together about next directions and future opportunities, Nickelodeon and our longtime creative partner Dan Schneider/Schneiderβs Bakery have agreed to not extend the current deal,” the Viacom-owned cable network said Monday in a statement. “Since several Schneiderβs Bakery projects are wrapping up, both sides agreed that this is a natural time for Nickelodeon and Schneiderβs Bakery to pursue other opportunities and projects.”
Of course, that article makes no mention of why their “longtime partnership” is ending…
The Next Big Hollywood Sex Scandal Is Already Breakingβ¦At Nickelodeon
Dan Schneider is a former actor and producer at Nickelodeon. He is responsible for nearly every one of their biggest successes in the last 20 years. Schneider has produced and written the shows that have given us breakout stars like Arianna Grande, Amanda Bynes and Victoria Justice.
Schneider has also been the subject of some very disturbing and consistent rumors for years. One need only search his name on the internet to find pretty damning rumors about him going back years. There are stories of his foot fetishes and how he acts them out on young extras alone in his office. There are stories about his relationships with his underage teenage stars and how they led to spin-off shows for the girls or blacklisting for those who didnβt participate.

Joan of Arc and the Passion of Emma GonzΓ‘lez
On Saturday, GonzΓ‘lez, who is small and compact, and who wears her dark hair cropped close to her skull, spoke for just a couple of minutes, offering an emotional name-check of the students who had died. Then, lifting her eyes and staring into the distance before her, GonzΓ‘lez stood in silence. Inhaling and exhaling deeplyβthe microphone caught the susurration, like waves lapping a shorelineβGonzΓ‘lezβs face was stoic, tragic. Her expression shifted only minutely, but each shiftβher nostrils flaring, or her eyelids batting tightly closedβregistered vast emotion. Tears rolled down her cheeks; she did not wipe them away. Mostly, the crowd was silent, too, though waves of cheering supportββGo, Emma!β βWe all love you!ββarose momentarily, then faded away. She stood in this articulate silence for more than twice as long as she had spoken, until a timer beeped. Six minutes and twenty seconds were over, she told her audience: the period of time it took Nikolas Cruz to commit the massacre.
In its restraint, its symbolism, and its palpable emotion, GonzΓ‘lezβs silence was a remarkable piece of political expression. Her appearance also offered an uncanny echo of one of the most indelible performances in the history of cinema: that of RenΓ©e Maria Falconetti, who starred in Carl Theodor Dreyerβs classic silent film from 1928, βThe Passion of Joan of Arc.β Based upon the transcript of Joan of Arcβs trial, in 1431, Dreyerβs film shows Joan as an otherworldly young womanβshe is nineteen, to the best of her limited knowledgeβwho, in the face of a barrage of questioning by hostile, older, powerful clerics, is simultaneously self-contained and brimming over with emotion. Falconetti, who never made another movie, gives an extraordinary performance, her face registering at different moments rapture, fear, defiance, and transcendence. Joanβs defense in the face of her inquisitors is largely mute: when she is asked to describe Saint Michaelβwho, she blasphemously claims, has appeared to herβshe mostly refrains from verbal response, her silence bespeaking holy understanding greater than theirs. In the final phase of her life, when Joan knows that she is to be martyred, Dreyerβs camera lingers on closeups of Falconetti, with her brutally close-cropped hair, her rough garments, and her anguished silence. Her extraordinary image in that sequence could be intercut almost seamlessly with footage from Saturdayβs rally.
Hagiography at its finest, folks. Emma will have her own feast day soon.
But if Emma is Joan of Arc, might we also cast the rest of the characters for the Emma/Joan movie mash-up? Because David Hogg is perfect for Gilles de Rais.
Gilles de Montmorency-Laval (French: [dΙ ΚΙ]; prob. c. September 1405 β 26 October 1440),[1] Baron de Rais, was a knight and lord from Brittany, Anjou and Poitou,[2] a leader in the French army, and a companion-in-arms of Joan of Arc. He is best known for his reputation and later conviction as a confessed serial killer of children.
…
Gilles’ bodyservant Γtienne Corrillaut, known as Poitou, was an accomplice in many of the crimes and testified that his master stripped the child naked and hung him with ropes from a hook to prevent him from crying out, thenΒ masturbatedΒ upon the child’s belly or thighs. If the victim was a boy he would touch his genitals (particularly testicles) and buttocks. Taking the victim down, Rais comforted the child and assured him he only wanted to play with him. Gilles then either killed the child himself or had the child killed by his cousin Gilles de SillΓ©, Poitou or another bodyservant called Henriet.[30]Β The victims were killed by decapitation, cutting of their throats, dismemberment, or breaking of their necks with a stick. A short, thick, double-edgedΒ swordΒ called aΒ braquemardΒ was kept at hand for the murders.[30]Β Poitou further testified that Rais sometimes abused the victims (whether boys or girls) before wounding them and at other times after the victim had been slashed in the throat or decapitated. According to Poitou, Rais disdained the victim’s sexual organs, and took “infinitely more pleasure in debauching himself in this mannerΒ … than in using their natural orifice, in the normal manner.”[30]
In his own confession, Gilles testified that βwhen the said children were dead, he kissed them and those who had the most handsome limbs and heads he held up to admire them, and had their bodies cruelly cut open and took delight at the sight of their inner organs; and very often when the children were dying he sat on their stomachs and took pleasure in seeing them die and laughedβ.[31]

Locked and encrypted iPhones can be unlocked by a brute force hack device that costs police users about $50 a pop now. I was reading about it this morning but damned if I can find it now.

Is this that Sam Kinison necro joke?
That Joan of Arc bullshit….the author clearly went into writing that consciously trying to make some kind of Joan of Arc comparison. You are not going to convince me that someone watched that speech and thought, “This immediately reminds me of a 1928 French silent movie that very few people have actually seen!!”
She’s a Witch! burn Her!
People who matter have all seen that. You know, the people who read The New Yorker. Not bitter flyover clingers like you.
If they want to get through to Trump voters, they need to reference Every Which Way But Loose, Malone, Armageddon, or The Patriot.

AND Ted S., natch.
Of course I’ve seen it.
David Hogg reminds me more of Elmer Gantry.
Excellent observation.
Lord Summerisle might be appropriate, too.
A lot of these kids remind me of the scene in “Cabaret” where all the youth start singing “Tomorrow belongs to me.”
I love classic cinema. I’ve seen some of the great silent movies – Battleship Potemkin, Greed, Metropolis. I still don’t have such encyclopedic recall of them that someone’s facial expression in a speech will make me reference a scene from one, and some pseudointellectual New Yorker hack doesn’t either.
I’m trying to find the clip, but the scene with the bit of conversation where she’s asked if she’s in God’s grace and she responds with “If I am not, may God put me there, and if I am, may God so keep me! I should be the saddest creature in the world if I knew I was not in His grace.” is perfection.
The Russian ones on high on my “get to” list. Love Fritz Lang to death. cinemasavant.com has an interesting running tally – he’s seen nearly every one released so far (Kino and other studios have done an amazing job releasing some of these for the first time since their theatrical runs).

“He appeared confused about the death toll, as 17 people died in last month’s attack at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student.”
Yes, let’s smugly imply he’s an idiot because he screwed up a detail without actually engaging his argument.
Considering how often the death toll is inflated to include the perpetrator, subtracting one off the total might be a mental shortcut for certain people.
I post this once a year on Facebook, thought some of you might enjoy it.
It never made sense to me that only 4 of the days of Holy Week are named. My names for the rest of the days are Mundane Monday, Uneventful Tuesday, and Normal Wednesday. It is during these days when Jesus picked up his cloak at the dry cleaners and his sandals at the sandal repair shop. He finally got those Passover cards in the mail. Then he had to pick up Judas at the airport (should have skipped that one).
Is this some sort of formal written protest?
No, I just know some of you share my questionable sense of humor.
I imagine you type everything with your arms crossed and a slightly irritated look on your face.
I could re purpose that as an Andy Rooney monologue. “Did you every notice only four of the days in Holy Week have a name? What do they have against the other three days?”
Did you ever notice that people say they are going to “take a shit”? Shouldn’t they say “leave a shit?”

Interesting that they compared her speech to piece of performance art.
Just guessing here, but I doubt she’s a devout Catholic who’s getting her marching orders from God. Also Joan of Arc was a military leader who went into battle and killed people with the assault weapons of her time. Comparison fail.
I am sure if they think it will increase the likelihood of disarming the public by 1%, they will pantomime any religious devotion needed to sway the masses.
She wore a Cuban flag patch on her jacket. Granted, she’s Cuban. So, it may not be an endorsement of Castro or Che.
The Commie Cuban flag Emma wore last weekend will make her deeply unpopular with lots of unwoke people in Florida.
She was just trying to get to the minimum 17 pieces of flair.
It’ll add to her unpopularity among other parts of the country.
I think her dad fled Castro. As far as I can tell it’s still the same flag as it was before Castro took power (but I certainly could be wrong).
Huh… it is. Been in use since 1902.
Well, Cuba does just keep repairing whatever was there in the 50’s, so the flag is no different.
I believe you’re right. The VERY anti-Castro Cubans I know display the Cuban flag.
Wiki says you are right, that it’s one of the few communist countries not to change its flag after going red. It also claims that the designer of the flag put the star on it to represent his hopes of Cuba being incorporated as a state into the US, which if true would be an interesting factoid.
What’s wrong with Castro? With the exception of Poland and Czechoslovakia, all Communist regimes changed or modified their countries’ flags.
These kids are sort of assholes but I do feel bad for them. The moment that they are seen as no longer useful for the cause, they will be discarded.
Don’t feel bad for them – it’ll be a valuable lesson.

Missed the earlier links, so this is about Stevens wanting to repeal the Second Amendment…
He was on the majority in DeShaney v. Winnebago County, which means, according to Stevens:
1. You have no constitutional right to be protected by the government.
2. Your constitutional right to protect yourself should be repealed.
I wish somebody would sue him again to seize all his property through eminent domain for a beneficial business opportunity.
Someone tried taking Stevens’ property? I thought only Souter came under fire for that.
Maybe I’m mixing up my rotten judges.
Damn. I thought you were right, but apparently it was only Souter.
Eminent domain is wrong, but I will admit that I liked hearing about Souter getting whacked, and I would have liked hearing about it about to the other justices on the majority.
Whoa… I just checked the link. It was live a little bit ago and now gets a 404. Try this link instead, which says Breyer got hit as well.
I believe he still is entitled to secret service protection. Would love to see someone ask him about that publicly.

They had one today with a transgender Welsh author.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Morris
I’ll call her she now if she wants, but no way in the nine hells will I call an Englishwoman Welsh. Dos drost y bont y cont.
Jan Morris wasn’t (certainly up until the 90’s) the kind of person that was like the trannies we experience today.
While not totally crazy, she was always somewhat eccentric-seeming, and the gender reassignment issue was nowhere near the core of her personality. I’d have assumed that all the attention-whoring of most contemporary transgenders based purely on having transitioned would have irked her, which if she was still writing, would have been expressed in print.
And they say we aren’t in a dark age. The New Yorker – ostensibly an ‘intellectual’ publication – is doing its part to keep it dim.

The idea that anyone is going to let a pair of barely old enough to do stupid things Florida People act as their moral guides fills me with… what’s the word for the emotion where you can only laugh or despair?
I never understood why God would have made Joan of Arc a saint. To help restore the French monarchy? Some of the worst despots in history? The European monarchs who took advantage of the Ottoman invasions to stab Austria and German principalities in the back while they were fighting to hold off the Muslim horde? The monarchy that ended in an anti-religious bloodbath?
If God was on the French side. why not give the Dauphin a set of balls like King David? Edward challenged him to settle the question of French succession by single combat but the French declined.

Well, you might think that, but it’s precisely what we have in Connecticut already.
Every ammunition purchase requires presentation of a long gun permit, a revolver and pistol permit, or an ammunition purchase permit.
Guess it’s time to invest in that reloading equipment.
Yeah, but gunpowder and primer purchases require at least an ammo permit too.
Of course, the smart people drive across into New York or Massachusetts and buy their ammo over the counter.
I’m in a cynical enough mood that I think this will go someplace.
Jesus Jones that picture of DWS is horrifying even for her.

So four in five donβt, good to know.
Those numbers don’t bode well for the amendment process, do they?
Not that repealing the amendment would lead immediately to anything, because it would take the passage of laws to make firearms illegal after that (and this would violate some state constitutions), but…I wonder how many takers you’d have if the repealers were told they’d have to strap on the bulletproof vest and confiscate illegal firearms.
“The Florida congresswoman called the ability to buy ammunition a βloopholeβ in gun control laws.”
*insert “You keep using that word…” meme here*
They sure do like that term.
Just like the loophole in the 1st ammendment that “allows” you to own a phone. Sure you can say whatever you want, but if you want to own a phone you can only use it to communicate govt approved thoughts/ideas. Go down to the park to shout your shit about liberty fuckhead.
Sadly, it would only build on the precedent about flying/driving. After all those are privileges, not rights. Sure you can go anywhere your feet will take you, no one is stopping you. But if you want to drive or fly there, pucker up to kiss the govt’s ass.
Whoa whoa, let’s not get reckless over here. Shout whatever you want in the privacy of your own home, but keep any non-approved ideas and thoughts out of the public space, citizen. My right to not be offended or have good-think come under question or scrutiny outweighs your right to say whatever you want.
Prediction: an explosion in interest in reloading
I actually find that encouraging. From the tiny bits of TV I’ve accidentally been exposed to over the past few weeks, Ida thought door-to-door confiscation was imminent. 20% of people will respond with whacko shit to any survey, if you give em that choice.
Reminds me of the South Park episode where Cartman claims a quarter of the population believes the government was behind 9/11, and Kyle responds that’s because a quarter of the population is retarded.
Because David Hogg is perfect for Gilles de Rais.
SF from the top ropes, KO. That is harsh.
Also, that de Rais guy was worse than I had remembered. His crimes against children started after he had his own child, and he killed a kid on average once every 3 weeks for nine years. They only caught him because a bishop started investigating him after he kidnapped a priest – he might have gotten away with it if he hadn’t gotten bolder in his crimes. One of the few people who actually deserved being burned at the stake.
What an awesome premise for a TV program!
But if Emma is Joan of Arc
The comparison was between the appearance of fuzz head and the actress’s portrayal of Joan D’arc, the performances of the student and the actress, not the character of the student and the saint. It may be a bullshit comparison but not for the reasons a few of you seem to be fixated on.
If you read on, the author makes the connection explicit:
βOur potential saviorsβ
Good grief no free rides, save yourself asshole.
“She has the privileged knowledge of the inspired, not the earned knowledge of the experienced”
Translation: I get my knowledge from being wasted on Tide Pods and hallucinating a cat lizard telling me what to do.
I’m confused. Are we now liking Christfags who get their marching orders from some higher power? I thought that we mocked people like that?
I need a scorecard to keep all these talking points straight.
If it were me, I’d be calling her mini-Sinead.
Lesbian Skinhead or Tankie Girl are my favorites.
I’m kind of partial to “Buzzcut Barbie”.
Now I want a video of Deadpool insulting Teenage Negasonic Warhead intercut with St Emma’s speech.
Sinead had a point worth making
That’s my point. It is the visual images and symbols used in βThe Passion of Joan of Arc,β that the author is attributing to the kids, that is what iconography means, nothing in that equates to ‘these kids are literally Joan D’arc.’ well maybe if one believes that the silent movie was a documentary. If I say ‘that guy reminds me of Steve McQueen in Papillon ‘ I don’t mean that he reminds me of Henri CharriΓ¨re.
The author conveniently and slyly moves between (or even conflates) the two — the representation, and the original story. That’s how “a new kind of medievalism is upon us.”
I think all this gets back to a point I made earlier. These are damaged people. And they attract other damaged people. The idiot kids blurt out idiotic, emotive pablum and their adult followers act as if they’ve just revealed the wisdom of the ages. “Illumination”? From a teenage tantrum? And they’re accusing their opponents of medievalism? None of these people are stable, healthy, people. They fundamentally lack the wherewithal to live a happy, healthy, productive, life and they’re all hoping like hell to attach themselves to some movement as the answer for the things that are lacking in their own life.
They experienced so much more than us.
Ergo eat your pablum.
Sorry to go OT early, I’m scratching my head over a discussion with a classmate:
Classmate: Corporations are evil and prevent research from saintly academic research
SSD: I think that for-profits can form meaningful relationships with academic/non-profit research groups. What are some way you believe corporation disrupt effective research?
Classmate: Do you not understand CORPORATIONS ARE INVOLVED. The way is that they only care about themselves and not the life-saving research of selfless academics.
I’m unable to come up with a coherent response. I hate this class.
Color me surprised. First I’m hearing that academics volunteer all of their time rather than getting paid for it.
Yep. I was going to ask if the academic researchers worked for free, but I think it would just go over their head.
If they made $7.25 an hour I might relent on the free labor.

A number of us actually tried to engage him for a while because his points, while based in some highly dubious research, did open up some avenues of discussion into societal construction, justice, and so forth that seemed interesting until it became obvious to everyone that he (It?) wasn’t at all interested in a real discussion, but instead wanted to continually bemoan the bogeyman of modern societal construction.
You’re arguing with someone who is captured by an ideology. There’s just very little utility with having a discussion with them. Occasionally I’ve had some luck with isolating the issues of corporations that are of concern, usually some variant of unaccountability, impure motivations, and so forth, and then illustrating how the same problems are writ large in government. If they do possess a shred of thoughtfulness this may give them pause, but usually it’s a waste of time. Typically what I’ve gotten back is that government is accountable to the people because of elections. When I point out that they believe that government is in the pockets of the corporations and the rich, the discussion generally ends.
His research, such as it was, was all conjecture because his perfect Eden existed in human prehistory.
He had a good, if annoyingly stated, point with his “am I free to gambol” posts.
But he was completely hostile to private property with his “why is all the food locked up” posts. He didn’t even try to draw a distinction between private (real) and personal (objects) as socialists do.
White Injun was an insane person. As you note, no point in engaging.
Mary Stack aka kizone kaprow is nuttier than squirrel shit, and has a prolific presence yet on the intertoobs.
I refuse to link to any of that insanity.
Fully agree. I wouldn’t bother if engaging wasn’t required for credit. Those are good discussion points you raised for someone willing to talk in good faith.
That reminds me, it’s been awhile since I gamboled.
I gamboled on the NCAA tournament and would like to take it back.
Selfish corporations like the ones that research into useful products that are needed and wanted enough for people to pay for them like functioning artificial limbs mated to human nervous systems or the repair of severed spinal cords? Those? Versus meaningful academic research into how long shrimp can run on a treadmill for 3 million tax payer dollars or 300 thousand bucks on how to ride a bike or why sea monkeys swim in tandem (50K) or maybe the increase likelihood of voodoo practitioners stabbing voodoo dolls because they are hungry?
Your classmate has a head full of scrambled shit. There is no point in talking to him.
Just hit him with a copy of the federal patent register.
No one is ever selfless.
True selflessness is immoral.
Ask him if the car he drives was made by a corporation.
Mark Levin took a call from some prog whining about corporations. Levin asked where he got his clothes. The caller says a thrift store. And before that?
You might also point out that all life-saving vaccines and water treatment plants are run by corporations.
Many water treatment plants are run by municipalities.
selfless academics?
Does this mean they haven’t been tenured yet?
Because I’m pretty sure most ‘tenured academics’ could not give one single fuck.
I once taught a class in which I actually said things like “Jason, don’t call Kyle a fascist” and “Kyle, don’t call Jason a commie loser.” Your comment reminded me of that. I don’t miss teaching.

Based upon the transcript of Joan of Arcβs trial, in 1431, Dreyerβs film shows Joan as an otherworldly young womanβshe is nineteen, to the best of her limited knowledgeβwho, in the face of a barrage of questioning by hostile, older, powerful clerics, is simultaneously self-contained and brimming over with emotion.
Um, let’s also not forget the whole crazy as a shithouse rat part. That is, unless we want to start calling David Berkowitz St. David of Sam.
My impression of Joan of Arc in historical terms is that she was a raving lunatic who the French used as a low-risk way of taking a crack at the English. She wins? Sweet, crown me. She loses? Well hell, I’m just the Dauphin, I can’t be expected to account for every loony chick running around with a sword!
Well, it was just like what we see here.
The peasants never really trusted the clerisy, or the aristocracy. The appeal of a frail maiden opposing and outperforming both the secular and the sacred arms of an oppressive regime is powerful, and so unlikely that *obviously* she is an agent of God.

What the hell is it with these cops? The guy went on a killing spree. There isnt a judge in the world that wouldn’t sign a warrant. Get the warrant, cut the finger off and unlock the phone. Why do they always have to try and get around the law?
*Cops and criminals have very similar personality types and the same proportion of individuals with XYY genes. They are the same kind of people.
I know a number of retired cops who would agree with you.
My father the retired parole officer agrees. Except he says cops are usually the one who are too big a pussy to chance going to jail.
I know a number of active cops that are in denial.
Because they refuse to accept that they are also bound by the law they enforce.

A University of Wisconsin-Madison instructor warns in a new academic journal article that “digital manspreading” is a form of “online misogyny” that silences female scholars.
As a case study, she points to C+= (pronounced βC plus equalityβ), a fictitious programming code purporting to help “smash the Patriarchy” that was actually just a trolling exercise.
…
Digital manspreading, she explains, βis an act of privilege, entitlement, and toxic masculinityβ due to the fact that menβs interactions with βonline space, made through the affordances of digital infrastructures, are gendered, material, and embodied.β
To illustrate this, Easter cites the example of a little-known programming language: C+= (pronounced βC plus equalityβ or βsee equality), a 2013 satirical programming code created by members of 4 Chan posing as the fictitious Feminist Software Foundation.
C+= was unveiled as a code βcreated to smash the toxic Patriarchy that is inherent in and that permeates all current computer programming languages,β and its creation apparently confused quite a number of engineers, some of whom took it seriously.

I’m guessing the instructor took C+= seriously.
It does reek of butthurt.
Getting paid to spew bullshit like this must be a nice gig if you can get it.
Are you surprised? Coding languages generally have some sort of rational, logical basis. For a couple of decades now, these people have been insisting that logic and reason are nothing but a ploy by the cis-white-hetero-patriarchy to oppress women, children and minorities. They don’t need to understand how ridiculous their argument is because someone else will always make the world work for them.
You nailed it nicely.
Ternary operation is a sin. Binary and unary are the only approved operations.
That is hilarious. Beg to be trolled, get trolled.

After he escaped from Al Qaeda in Syria, American photojournalist Matt Schrier investigated his own kidnapping and uncovered what he describes as a pattern of βbetrayalβ by FBI agents handling his case.
Schrier is now asking hard questions of former FBI Director Robert Mueller, who now leads the special counsel Russia probe, and former FBI Director James Comey, who was fired by President Trump in May 2017.
βNot every FBI agent is bad. Some are very good people,β Schrier told Fox News. βBut the ones that are bad need to be weeded out. And the ones who let them be bad, and who turn their head, need to be exposed.β
In an exclusive cable interview that first aired Monday on βThe Storyβ with Martha MacCallum, Schrier went in depth, sharing emails, financial records and formal letters of complaint, which backed up allegations that after he was taken hostage in 2012, the FBI monitored his accounts as Al Qaeda terrorists used his money to buy at least a dozen computers and tablets.
While he was tortured and held by al Nusra, the brutal Al Qaeda franchise in Syria, Schrier claimed the FBI put intelligence gathering ahead of his personal security, hoping to track the computers and tablets to learn more about Al Qaeda recruits and future plots. After his harrowing escape, Schrier started demanding answers from the FBI, which at the time of his kidnapping was led by Mueller.
Photojournalist Matt Schrier, seen before his abduction in 2012.
Since his return to the U.S. in mid-2013, Schrier shared documents with Fox News and explained, βI faxedβ I emailed them, probably between my mother and my father and me, between 50 and 100 complaints.β
Comey took over from Mueller in September 2013, and Schrier said the stonewalling continued. βI was emailing him questions. I was forwarding him all these emails. I was demanding answers from him,β Schrier said. βAnd I never got anything back.β
Schrier said he has been unable to obtain credit cards or open new bank accounts because Al Qaeda stole his identity and passwords. Unable to get a lease for an apartment, Schrier said his FBI case manager suggested he temporarily live in a New York City homeless shelter.

Thomas Piketty Sees Only One Way to Defeat the Rise of the Radical Right
The economist’s latest paper contains an urgent warning for the Democratic Party.
…
Indeed, the left-populist wing of Western political parties, including the American progressive movement restarted by Bernie Sanders, has reason to celebrate: Piketty’s paper aligns with their somewhat counterintuitive strategy that shifting the Democratic Party platform more to the left is actually a winning electoral strategy that can help bring back disenfranchised working-class voters and less educated voters who currently may not vote at all or identify with right-wing populism.
***
Shorter Piketty: “Eat the rich and purge our heresies”
Sounds like this guy has been living in a parallel universe for the past few years. He says that Clinton’s problem was she catered too much to the center, and wasn’t far enough left. I guess “deplorables” wasn’t a strong enough word for him.
She needed to call for a Final Solution to exterminate the vermin I guess.
Not really. Any Dem not 100% in the Hillary Vortex is saying they didn’t run far enough to the left. That’s why it rings so very hollow when they wring their hands about Trump being a populist demagogue. They wanted to choose the demagogue, is all.
(Not saying it isn’t stupid, just that Comrade Piketty’s stance is not a unique stupidity.)
Yes,the way to defeat the right is to lurch ever-leftward, because that worked out so well for every Communist regime in the past.
Well, it did. For many years in fact and in virtually all cases. The US might go differently but there are no guarantee we’d end up in civil war, could be like cooking a frog.
That’s exactly what’s been going on for quite a while now
This seems mostly a rehash of the old Thomas Franks’ What’s the Matter with Kansas spiel. They just don’t understand why those poor rubes won’t vote their own interests and vote for the party who will keep them. What they fundamentally seem to misunderstand is what the interests of these voters are. By and large, they don’t want to be kept. They want to be able to build and maintain their own life. They want to be able to live with some modicum of respect. Pretty much the whole left-wing seems intent on treating them as lower than dirt, but they’ll keep them as charity, as long as they know their place.
The phrase, “vote their own interest” is probably one of the most insidious shit that I have heard from progressives and the Left. Whenever I hear some asshole say that I always ask, “And you know what’s in the best interest for others, right?” They know what I am implying but try to get around it by saying that some folks aren’t educated enough or easily fooled into voting against stuff that might help them.
Completely agreed. And if you ever listen to the people who use the term explain what they think the interests of those other people are, it’s almost always to be compliant and well-maintained serfs. The model they always advance is that “the little people” will get taken care of by their betters and vote loyally to maintain them in power. It never involves them having their careers thrive or having opportunity to get ahead. And, of course, the person using the phrase invariably sees themselves as the elite doling out largess.
That’s the same logic that drives the Left’s illogical hatred towards Citizen’s United. They may not be in favor of corporations (made up of individuals mind you) or groups giving some campaign money to politicians but what drives them crazy is that those politicians will use that campaign money to try and convince people to vote for them. In their eyes, they think that a lot people are easily fooled so we have to limit the amount of money those politicians can receive to fool people with those dazzling or misleading campaign ads.
Their whole argument against CU is that people are too dumb to understand stuff especially campaign ads, so the government needs to regulate speech to save those people from themselves.
You are too kind. They want to stop the corporations who give to conservative candidates and have exemptions for themselves. They have no problem with news organizations endorsing candidates or union contributions.
See, I think you give people too much credit.
Progs are fine with big money in American politics. For decades it was
1. Unions, particularly pubsec ones who were 99% Dem.
2. Giant corporations who evenly donated to both parties
Like it’s truly staggering when you look at the 20 years before Citizens, just how huge the disparity is.

They combined to donate $625,710,896.00 over that 20 year period.
$486,691,123.99 went to Democrats.
$157,635,858.85 went to Republicans.
The Left hates Citizens United because it lets their political enemies actually have an even, level playing field, and that’s not what they want. They want to rule.
At the same time they decry at-will, flexible employment as “neofeudal serfdom“
They want a dependent class managed and ruled over a professional class. The American middle class as it used to be is a deadly threat to the political fortunes of the Left.
A 40 year old guy who owns a dry cleaner, with a wife who sells real estate while the kids are at school, and who manages a couple rental houses they bought during the market downturn, you can’t buy that guy and his wife off with promises of social programs. They don’t need social programs.
They are the descendants of Jefferson’s vision of America as a nation of free men who work for thesmelves, not for a lord or a guildmaster.

The Korean War broke out on 25 June 1950 and Seoul was quickly captured by the advancing Korean People’s Army of the North. After Britain entered the war on the side of the South, Blake and the other British diplomats were taken prisoner. As the tide of the war turned, Blake and the others were taken north, first to Pyongyang and then to the Yalu River. After seeing the bombing of North Korea, and after reading the works of Karl Marx and others during his three-year detention, he became a communist.
At a secret meeting arranged with his guards, he volunteered to work for the Soviet Union’s spy service, the KGB.[9][10] In an interview Blake was once asked, “Is there one incident that triggered your decision to effectively change sides?”, to which Blake responded, “It was the relentless bombing of small Korean villages by enormous American flying fortresses. Women and children and old people, because the young men were in the army. We might have been victims ourselves. It made me feel ashamed of belonging to these overpowering, technically superior countries fighting against what seemed to me defenceless people. I felt I was on the wrong side … that it would be better for humanity if the Communist system prevailed, that it would put an end to war”.[

Turns out he was right. Today North Korea is a thriving communist paradise while the south suffers under grinding poverty and soul crushing tyranny.
He should have asked: “why is it the capitalist countries are powerful and technologically advanced while the communist countries are poor and backward?”
They think wealth is a zero sum game.
Yeah, they’re convinced the evil capitalists have raped the poor countries.
Answer 1: capitalist countries have greater income inequality and thus people themselves are poorer.
Answer 2: communist countries are constantly beset by aggressive capitalist action, up to devastating wars, forcing them to put resources into defence they’d otherwise use elsewhere.
Must ignore that the most oil-rich nation on earth has children gangs fighting over garbage scraps with machetes. Only communism can give you that.

diedwas murdered by the CIA, counter-revolutionary elements came into the open and undermined the country.during his three-year detention, he became a communist

If you lose 10 pounds of fat, precisely 8.4 pounds comes out through your lungs and the remaining 1.6 pounds turns into water. In other words, nearly all the weight we lose is exhaled.

South Park got it wrong. You don’t need to shove food up your butt to crap out your mouth.
It might be correct. Your metabolism is essentially a slow fire. Products are CO2, water and ash = CO2, water and shit. I dont know what the numbers are. I never bothered to measure them and I probably wont.
no need to measure- just use stoiciometry
Fat is just a long chain where each link is 1 carbon and 2 hydrogens. So burning each link requires 3 oxygen atoms giving one CO2 and one H2O.
The weight ratio of the products is 44 to 18, so about 70% of the product is CO2.
Hmm. This isn’t the first time I’ve seen bad math in a CNN article.
Do the stoichiometry and then measure. Some water just passes through, not all of the organic molecules are reacted, some of the carbon is taken up and not released, etc.
Desiccate the food, weigh water and food.
Eat.
Shit.
Desiccate the shit and measure water and solids – difference in water is water retained – difference in total solids are solids retained – total difference is CO2.
It would be close but not the same. I think I will leave this work to others.

Question for the mechanically inclined. I just got a commercial treadmill from my wife’s gym for free. In trying to get it apart to get it into my basement, there are some rusted out machine screws that need to be removed. 4 of the 5 are so rusted in that my screw extractor kit (Screw Out brand) hasn’t been able to remove them. I sawed the heads off of two of the screws in hopes of being able to remove the two parts without getting the screws out, but that has failed. My last course of action has been to drill a hole completely through one of the screws with a normal drill bit and to engage the extractor with that hole. It worked in that the extractor bit into the screw. It didn’t work in that the screw still won’t budge, even with my corded drill at 100%. I stopped when smoke started wafting out of the drill.
Suggestions??
Spray them with Kroil and let it soak overnight and try again?
That or spray with PB Blaster. Stuff stinks to hell but really eats up rust.
I assume you drenched it in PB blaster. Also make sure you tap the area around it lightly with a hammer or just a wrench.
If the above doesnβt help then just go brute force. Start drilling through it repeatedly using ever increasing bit diameters. The goal is to leave a husk of a screw. Then carefully sacrifice a small jewelers flat head to pry the remnants of the screw away from the threads and out of the hole.
If you do it right you should leave the female threads intact. Worst case youβll have to case it with a thread tap.
I did, but only let it sit for an hour or so. I ran out, so I’ll have to get some more PB and hit it harder for longer.
Yeah, time is your friend when using penetrating oils. If it doesn’t need to be done right now, give the oil time to work. The longer the better.
Heh….you said penetrating oils
Gigity
Look at the lizard. A mechanically inclined reptile.
Yes, tap around the screw and then lightly on the back of the extractor while it is engaged. this will break some of the rust loose in the threads. Throw the electric drill in the trash and put a crescent wrench on that fucker. The metal in the screw is probably weak. If it doesnt come out and the extractor just starts chewing then match the hole size with a drill bit and drill the hole thing out. Get a tap one size larger, re-tap the threads and put new screws in.
You don’t get to be a domineering space faring species without solid knowledge of basic machining.

I tried, but Grover keeps harassing me.
Rent a backhoe, dig a large hole against your foundation down to the footer near where you want the treadmill, rent a partner saw, cut a hole through block wall, install treadmill, buy Bilko door, order concrete, block, sand, gravel and cement, pour footings, lay block, install Bilko door. Easy peasy, chicken greasy.
The thing to do is tell the wife you are going to need new tools for this operation. You go get yourself an acetylene torch setup and a new mig welder. You cut the thing up into manageable bits and get it into the basement. Weld it back together where needed. This may require the purchase of more tools and even a metal lathe but I am not seeing a problem and I am sure she won’t either.
The metal lathe is a great investment and what he really needs. Wait, what was the original problem?
Metal lathe for sure. I’m going to the Haas factory next week if anyone wants me to pick them up anything.
Don’t forget to pick up a replacement treadmill while your out.
Buy a carbide drill bit and drill out the ticket. Buy a tap for the next largest standard thread pitch and be done with it. Replace the machine screws.
Depending on the construction and what the machine screws were doing, consider replacing with clevis pins, so you can dismantle it again with ease.
*drill out the fucker
Yeah, that’s the ticket.
I’m thinking if the rust is that bad, the thread is gonna be in rough shape anyway. NEEDS MORE LUBE
Tap and die kit is your friend, just need to buy the right screws to match. A pain in the ass but better than fucking around.

In the thread under comment #35
“beware of men who cry,β the writer Nora Ephron once cautioned.
Ephron once went on with a contrarian (for feminists) notion about how great guys are: they build things, take chances, weld, lift iron, walk rails, and so on = stuff chicks can’t do.
I like that she risks being burned as a heretic by honoring the efforts of the endowed, but I still think the other way around: if chicks had been full partners in the markets of work, we wouldn’t have done things the same way. Examples: pre-fab on the safe ground might have advanced earlier, using more machines and less grunting would have come to the fore earlier and more widely; maybe buildings would be made out of fiberglass instead of steel…..who knows: tons of smart ideas might have come along and saved a billion vertebrae.
Or maybe we would have never gotten anything done, as is becoming the current trend, or when we did, it would have collapsed and killed a bunch of people the next day.
But at least it would have been pretty
Yeah, right before turning into a pile of blood soaked rubble, it surely would have been real purty. That’s what really matters.
As long as our daughters have role models
From an early age I’ve taught my niece she doesn’t have to conform to any norms, just be who she wants to be; now that she is in HS they taught her that means she’s non-binary. No, she’s a girl who likes dancing and also thinks Pacific Rim is badass. The world is fucked up.
Meh, I don’t know. You can have a million ideas about working smarter not harder and it means jack shit unless it saves the big man money. When labor is cheap, labor is where it’s at.
I surprised at how long it took for ear plugs to catch on. During WW1, British artillerymen were told “all are sacrificing for the war; you shall be sacrificing your hearing.”
For a while, there was even an attitude that the best way to prevent hearing loss was to spend a lot of time around noise.
***
Noise-induced hearing loss has been documented as early as the 16th century, when a French surgeon, Ambroise ParΓ©, wrote of the treatment of injuries sustained by firearms and described acoustic trauma in great detail. Even so, the protection of hearing would not be addressed for three more centuries, when the jet engine was invented and resulted in a long overdue whirlwind of policy development addressing the prevention of hearing loss.
We present a synopsis of hearing loss prevention in the US Army and describe the current Army Hearing Program, which aims to prevent noise-induced hearing loss in soldiers and to ensure their maximum combat effectiveness.
…
In the period from the American Civil War to World War I, new occupational hazards evolved. One of the most prevalent of these was hazardous noise. The pervasive attitude of the early 1900s was that hearing loss could be prevented by developing a tolerance to noise. Consequently, any attempts to avoid loud sounds or to protect oneself from them were interpreted as weakness.4 This βtoleranceβ theory was scientifically examined in 1941 when the US Army opened the Armored Medical Research Laboratory at Fort Knox, Kentucky. This laboratory completed a landmark study in 1944 resulting in the recommendation that gun crews, gunnery instructors, and others regularly exposed to gunfire blasts be provided hearing-protective devices.

Dad talked of his time in the B-25. The engines had exhaust pipes that were about 4 inches long. With that and the noise of the airframe he said that you could sing or shout at the top of your lungs and no one would hear you. He also wore hearing aids and had a disability for his deafness.

Yeah, who knows?. Perhaps one of the millions of potential descendants of the 700,000 people killed in the Civil War would have found a cure for cancer or developed inexpensive space travel. Or maybe one would have been the U.S. Hitler to grab power during our Great Depression. Alternative histories are

Again, the ERA did not fail because large swaths of Americans found this mix of real and imaginary fears compelling. It failed because the threshold to amend the Constitution is so high that even a fairly small handful of interest groups can block the path. Like the Child Labor Amendment, the ERA fell victim to an amendment process that is almost impossible to overcome.
…
Americaβs problem isnβt simply that our Constitution is almost impossible to amend βthatβs a difficult problem, but one that we can work around. Americaβs problem is that we are watching our democracy slip from our grasp β and it is slipping away entirely because of provisions in our Constitution that prevent the American people from choosing their own leaders.

andreas kummert before you accuse me
Someone just provided me with a link to this muzak. Thought I would share. You know it sort of brings back old times for me. First band I played in, the other guitar player (we shared rhythm / leads) was German, looked just about like this guy and he was very good. We did a lot of original blues and southern rock stuff. He was also, although a very nice guy, all sorts of weird fucked up. German, lol, no surprise.
Then again, when this guy shows up in the news as the next person bombing a Christmas market yelling ‘Alluha Akbar!’, I’m going to be the most not surprised person of all.
Well, it’s late.
I did not fucked up link the drinking!
So what you’re saying is he liked to tape himself shitting on the guitar and then used that as jerk-off material?
I’m just glad I never saw that. I lived with the guy about half the week, or sometimes for extended periods while we worked on our music in his mum’s basement, where we had some pretty impressive recording equipment. His mom was a lush widow and pretty wealthy. I felt sorry for her because her husband, my friends dad, got killed in an accident, was hit by a big truck and killed instantly, and I guess she was never the same, always out of it on booze and valium 24/7. Anyway, she would buy the guy any musical equipment he wanted, stuff I could only dream of. But he had real talent and we made some good music and had lost of adventures. It was good times.
You’re sounding like a hippie.
There’s no hippy who has ever lived who would have dared do the crazy dangerous stuff we did, and lived to tell of it. Keep in mind, I was 17-19 years old at that time. I could tell you stuff you wouldn’t believe even if you had been there to see it. Well, maybe you would, probably depending on if you you were born after 1980, or not.
What, are you some kind of prevert, wanting to know how old I am!?!

You mean the Slabs? Those pictures you posted were very cool. I’d love to see it sometime.
I submitted an article, and I’m going Back to jam weekend after this for part2. Overnight
I was a 17 year old whose parents no longer even pretended to try controlling me. I got into the music scene and wound up hanging around with the wildest of the wildest motherfuckers in the city of Cincinnati. I’m talking like the late 1970s. Hedonism was king. I miss it. Thank gawd I’m still alive, because I have no idea why. But I’d do it all over again, no doubt. I could write a book on the crazy shit I’ve seen.

If we get them a day off school and the boys think it’ll get them the ladies, then sure.
What about Disabled Silver Kia Rights? Who marches for them?

π
I’ll be there on Saturday. Surreal!
OK, OT, but it’s late and the thread is old.
I’m really reconsidering the sanity of being a Range Officer. I stepped in tonight to have a coffee and they needed someone out on the line to cover for another guy who couldn’t do duty tonight.
So there’s this guy in port 6, fiddling around with a gun. Muzzle discipline is fine, he’s got 3 guns out on the bench, but they’re all pointed fine, and he’s struggling with what looks like a jam. I walk past, check everyone else is running safely, and go back. By the time I get there, the guy has a lead pencil up the barrel, gun pointed down onto the bench, hammering the gun down to try and eject either a round, or a casing, I can’t tell.
Hang on, man, what’s the problem?
He shows me. He’s got a CZ 52, with a round jammed in the barrel, slide locked back, with what amounts to a poor man’s crossbow bolt jammed in, trying to eject the round. No fucking way, dude. So I take the gun off him, and pointing it downrange, I run the slide forward softly, and see that the extractor isn’t engaging – it’s misaligned. So I carefully decock the hammer, release the slide and get the gun stripped down. Get a screwdriver on the rim and lever (with some effort) the round out. It’s tight, but it comes out. I take a look, and it’s a live 32 ACP round.
Dude, wrong ammo. You HAVE TO check calibers. This gun is 7.62×25 Tokarev, not 32 ACP. This is dangerous. If it had fired this gun, you would have probably had an expensive visit to the gunsmith and possibly the ER. Do yourself a favor, go thru’ all your ammo and guns and ensure you don’t get them mixed up.
So, he looks pissed – which is pretty idiotic – cleans up, reassembles the CZ 52 and puts it in his range bag. Gets out a Beretta Tomcat, and just starts loading the mag. I see he’s fighting getting the mag loaded, so I go back. He’s trying to load the mag with a mixture of 32 ACP and Tokarev. WTF? I kick him out.
The more I think about it, the more I realize lots of people dodged bullets tonight. For the non-ballistics people, it’s dangerous to use the wrong round in a gun, even if the dimensions look the same (the Tok and the 32 look similar in most respects, but they’re different shapes), but in this particular case, it’s very dangerous. The Tok has about 20% higher pressure than 32 ACP, and if he could have chambered or (even worse) partially chambered the Beretta with the Tokarev, it could have been a VERY bad evening for everyone concerned.
The kicker? The guy’s been shooting at that place for the last couple years.
NO YOUUR OLD!!
That is spooky, even stupid me makes sure the ammo fits the weapon
All those mouse guns, especially with tip-up barrels give me the willies. There’s not much stopping you from getting some shrapnel in the face even from the proper ammo.
Video games only allow you to use the right ammo with the right gun. Life is a shitty game.
I just tossed a grenade into a box of grenades in my face on accident(fumble fingers)
the results weren’t pretty
were you using God mode?
I died
Jesus complex then. Consult your doctor.
A video game that allows you to load the wrong ammo and then blows up in your face would not be much fun.
But it could be instructive.
Educational games are usually the worst.

Maybe man girdles help direct bloodflow in useful places??
Or it’s all genetic. or random.
I bet it’s that canadian blood. Also, don’t get me talking about girdles when I’ve seen those renfair pics π
Travelling at or near light speed results in time passing much slower.
Oh, come now. Those structural garments are more properly termed “corsets”. But yeah, i probably overshared a bit. π
I have these great outfits but I can only wear them at the Rennie!
Maybe I should wear one for my last day (this Friday) at the current employer (not that low-laced, something more modest). That would be kind of hilarious.
Spanx or GTFO.
Whoa…Renfair pics? There’s renfair pics involving girdles around here?
Well, just one of me, I think, showing off my pre-diet challenge figure.
And yeah, it’s more corset than girdle for sure.
Is it the one you posted down below?
If not, Digby has a sad for missing out.
Alright, just for you, here is a re-posting of my “too much information” Rennie pic.
Very nice. Although now I feel like a creep (sorry).
That said, that’s an example of why renfairs are fun.
Meh. We’re all grown-ups here. We can all face the perils of your bounty.
“Let me face the peril!” Lol. Greatest stupid flick around.
Let’s make this post educational. You see the upside down half moon where the boobs meet the collarbone? No? That is because it isn’t there. That’s how you know they’re real. If you want the silicone variety (and some do; I ain’t judging). then look for that upper “border”.
Ooh, look at you with your humblebragging!
Eh, I’m not humblebragging. I am fat and happy. But guess what? That means I’m not self obsessed, and I enjoy earthly pleasures. I say “yes” to many of life’s possibilities.
We have one go at this life; I intend to make mine enjoyable AF.
OK. 2.45. Punching out, somewhat sozzled, pretty tired.

He doesn’t just tweet either, he smacks down fandom crazies. He’s obviously long-accustomed to fandom and it’s various issues, but he knows about sockpuppet tactics and things like that, which infest modern fandom. Hell, he’s visited 4chan! My dad’s his age and until he fell ill, he was pretty computer literate (up until ~ 7 years ago he was playing one of those big online games, not Warcraft, but something like that), but he would never have tweeted or even known 4chan existed. And it’s clear it’s all Shatner, not just some assistant, like so many celebs.
I hope when I’m his age I’m even half as aware of whatever the modern tech is. Amazing.
I am moving to San Diego Saturday morning. Hubby is staying behind a few weeks. He has been turning up the drama knob to eleventy for a while.
I understand Ruth Graham, the late wife of the late Billy Graham, when an interviewer asked her, “Have you ever considered divorce?”, and Ruth answered, “No, but I’ve considered homicide.”
Yup, I get that.
You make sure you hold on to that man, not every man will wear a skirt to impress a lady.
And as I constantly remind my admirers when I’m wearing one, “Nothing is worn under there”.
Weird Brits…..
It’s all in perfect working order!
Hubs is a little freaked out by the sheer number of ladies and gents of all ages who inquire what he is wearing under there. He always fends them off with a joke, but seriously, why is it OK to ask a dude what is going on with his privates??
Well, it’s a trope, isn’t it.
I know it’s considered impolite to ask a woman if she’s going commando, but a kilt is a kind of open invitation, because of the reputation, Carry On films, Braveheart, etc.
It’s never bothered me (and it’s not like I wear one much now, I don’t have the same shape as I did), but it’s always “is he or isn’t he” which I usually raise my eyebrows and ask them if they can imagine how scratchy broadloom tartan is, or they ask “boxers or briefs”, to which the answer is “depends”. It’s always a variation on that.
“Depends”
Awesome.
So, is His Nibs sporting a traditional tartan or a common one?
Here’s the get-up. That isn’t me, but that’s the tartan I wear and the accessories are very similar.
Nice! What clan is that? Hubs is Colhoun and MacAllister.
I am the diluted lowland group of mercenaries known as Duncan.
That’s Campbell Ancient. I know, the devil’s spawn.
Also known as Black Watch. Actually, that picture’s wrong, Campbell would beat us with a stick. You don’t wear white socks when you’re wearing a white shirt. It’s like wearing trainers with a Tie and Tails.
The correct leg attire are socks with lozenges in blue and green to match the tartan, or the tartan itself. I also wear my kilt a bit longer, with pleats.
Oh, I now see it’s Black Watch! I have a big skirt of that pattern. ALways get compliments.
I am a bit torn because I am 54 % “British” plus 16% Irish by DNA. British muddles English, Scots, Welsh. But my maiden name is Welsh, and research has shown that some English king gave my Welsh ancestors a chunk of land (and a minor title) in Ireland as a reward for battle services rendered. So I am basically a mutt of squabblers over the great Isles.
I so white…
I’m maybe 1/16th Scots. You don’t need to have pure and unsullied bloodlines. You just have to make sure you’re permitted.
The Duke of Argyll is very particular over the tartan. There is ONLY the Ancient – none of the ‘Dress’, ‘Summer’ or any of that kind of thing, and there are three locational variants, but you HAVE to prove lineage to those sub-clans to wear the particular tartan. Unless you’re a Campbell of Breadlbane, Cawdor or some other place, you mustn’t use the tartan.
The complication is that the tartan is ALSO the regimental tartan of the Scots Highlanders (which is why James Bond gets to wear the Black Watch), but there are some complicated rules about what accessories are worn, along with permitted shirts and jackets.
The sad thing is that most of the obsession over tartan started as a result of Queen Victoria being a LARPer.
Thanks Number 6.
Just too much for me to learn and act on properly. I will continue to be a mutt and culturally appropriate wherever I damned well please.
Now that I know I am partly Russian genetically, I feel that I have a license to be a total mercenary dick.
Queen Vic the LARPer. Awesome.
Well, the Ancient Duncan is pretty. The Moderns are a bit overdone, but they usually are.
Incidentally, if you think Americans can be crass about it, I can tell you, drunken Londoners are far worse.
You have to wear something over there because they’ll flip your kilt all the time when you’re in a bar.
Hubs wears his awesome Duluth Trading company undies under his kilt, so he’s safe from a stiff breeze or drunken idiot. But it is odd how often he’s asked.
Tee-hee. He’s a good egg. He’s just not that rational, and frankly is a bit on the lazy side, so he’d be happy to coast for the remaining decades of his life.
Not me. On SP’s enneagram dealio, I am a strong 3, an Achiever, closely followed by Challenger. So I don’t coast along well. Damn the torpedos, full speed ahead.
But the age gap (16 years) is beginning to show. I also am a communicator and I like people, so I am sure we’ll find a way. For now, I have to keep him from Old Man Rut of staying put because it’s easy.
He needs only to find a new band in San Diego, and he will be thrilled!
Sometimes, considering spousicide is the only relief we have!
Preach it, sister!
Yeah, simply knowing there are options is enough relief π
Going way out on Boot Hill…..

Where do you live #6? let’s get you out here sometime
I’m in Connecticut, and un-musical.
Unemployed at the moment, but working on getting something organized, but the future uncertainty makes voyages of exploration … ahem … politically sensitive within the family right now.
Eh, I’ve been sticking to the 29 again regime. THat way the laugh crinkles seem more natural.
The extra weight I carry keeps the wrinkles at bay a little.
I can’t help it; I enjoy earthly pleasures and raucous camaraderie. That means I can’t be a fashion model. I don’t give a shit.

Hayek, for you it would be a three hour tour east on the 78 past Brawley to the 111 then north to Niland, hang a right at main and go East about 3 miles, you can’t miss it
Would it compromise secret clearance?
*said in the voice of one of “The Californians”*
Cosmotarian hero Wyden shows his big government thuggery
Fuck you Ron. Private organizations do not answer to you. You work for the people, not the other way around. This isn’t a authoritarian dictatorship yet, despite your best efforts to move us in that direction. Go back to your NYC bookstore and choke on a scone. Phony ass piece of shit.
Trying to change the subject eh? Don’t you live out here? Come play with us….
Sorry Yusef, I’m more curmudgeon tending towards curmudgeonly. Not the artistic/musical type. If I replaced the late great Maurice Colbourne as my avatar, I’d use Geoffrey Palmer.
And last,my Band is getting back together (maybe) for a Slab jam.
Good Night kids!
Italy shows how it’s done.

Italy: Muslim teacher tells children as young as 4 to attack non-Muslims with swords and bombs
***
Anti-terrorism police arrested the man, identified in the media as 58-year-old Abdel Rahman, an Egyptian with Italian citizenship, in the city of Foggia in Puglia.
His bank accounts were seized and the centre he ran, Al Dawa, was searched and sealed off.
Accused of apology for terrorism and association for the purpose of terrorism, Rahman is said to have praised Isis attacks on social media and shared material glorifying the terrorist group.
He is suspected of attempting to spread similar propaganda at the cultural association of which he was president, and where he was in charge of teaching religious lessons to children as young as 4 years old, according to La Repubblica.
Secret recordings caught him telling youngsters to attack “unbelievers” with swords and bombs, the newspaper said.
The newspaper said Rahman was arrested as part of an investigation codenamed “Bad Teacher”, the latest in a series of anti-terror operations in Foggia within the past year.
…
Italy has taken a hardline approach to so-called apologists for terrorism.
In early 2015 the country’s cabinet approved a slew of anti-terrorism measures, including jail terms of up to six years for “foreign fighters” as well as those who recruit would-be jihadists. The measures also included confiscating the passports of suspected militants and giving more powers to Italy’s intelligence services.
Since then, the country has deported well over 100 people for religious extremism.

Operation Bad Teacher?! C’mon, you can do better than that. Otherwise, good work.
The Nick Gillespie of code names.
I bet it sounds better in Italian
Yep. It does.
found via JihadWatch, because we all know how likely CNN is to pick up a story like this.

Clearly the ravings of ignorant, yokel who must secretly hate brown people and not a sober and rational analysis of a very obvious pattern.
I grew up in a pretty “progressive” school system and I don’t remember any talk of swords. They told us not to play guns because this one time, at bad school? Some kid fell on his stick and it went straight through the roof of his mouth and he died or some such shit. That’s really what we were told. They also gathered us for an assembly to watch the educational film “The Child Molester” when I was about 9. My brother was late getting home that night and it probably damaged my psyche irreparably.
