Vacation time is almost over and by over I mean traveling back home from the in-law’s. Hopefully sloopy and I can get one night out together before we leave.
Let me see what news I can dig up for you today.
May finally be the end for Sears and KMart. They’ll be going to department store heaven with Montgomery Ward.
Michael Cohen denies having ever been to Prague after McClatchy’s report of a cell signal putting him there at the time of the alleged Russian meeting.
The new season of Trump! might be even more lit than the last! I didn’t think anything would happen with that storyline.
I have to say it’s amusing that no one seems to care that the government is still shutdown and probably will be for awhile. While Obama’s admin dramatized the hell out of a partial shutdown, it’s not even noticeable under Trump’s.
After getting owned by Trump’s unexpected trip to Iraq, the left wing media doubled down on their TDS and criticized the troops and Trump for him signing their MAGA hats.
Damn the news is slow, I’m going to have to end this shorter than usual. That’s all I got today. I’ll leave you with a song and then move on with my day.
Montgomery Ward is closed? Damn, I have to get out more often.
There’s a particular smell to Montgomery Wards that sticks with me to this day.
Formaldehyde?
Now that you say it….
As a child, it always had a laxative effect on me.
Then you better stay out of Harbor Freight
Just make sure nobody tells Lou Reed.
Like you never loaned your phone to someone going on an international trip.
Four people spoke with McClatchy on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of information shared by their foreign intelligence connections. Each obtained their information independently from foreign intelligence connections.
Yeah right…sure you did.
So in an investigation into foreign meddling we’re totally going to trust foreign meddlers
Sounds like they way they “verified” the Steele dossier.
Bullshit.
It pretty much sounds like it is. The sources sound like they are the exact same people who put the Steele dossier together in the first place. I think the only difference I think there is is that Cohen has been turned and won’t directly call bullshit on the claims.
Anonymously sourced hearsay from alleged Euro intelligence contacts? Sure, I’m convinced.
Why would your phone briefly ping towers, instead of pinging them the whole time?
There’s been a couple times the GPS in my phone glitched out, and said I was in San Francisco (which I’ve been to once). I don’t know why it thought I was in that shithole.
Because you took a selfie with flowers in your hair and Siri thought you were a gentle person?
Oh jeezus, please no….
If it helps, note that they don’t state who it is of.
FUNNY LOOKING DICK PICS OR GTFO
Watch it, this is supposed to be a family-friendly website.

Prolly NSFW….
Good morning y’all.

Hehe.
You saw the url, clicked it anyway, and scrolled through…
Aaand you’re going to Thailand in the near future. If you’re not curious about your sexuality yet I’m sure some people are.
Hmm. Can’t see the entire picture. They are all tainted.
*narrows gaze*
Don’t look too closely you might get Syphilis of the Eye.
You should be sacked for that
Getting a little teste, aren’t you?
Hey lets not get Nuts here with the puns
Love those pics. In fact, I’m nuts over them.
I don’t know, I think the photos are groin on me.
That link won’t open at work…Did I get shafted?
I clicked on it, but only for a quick glans.
Has this subthread cum to a head yet?
It takes balls to keep this going
Those pics are scrotes cool!
Who thinks this shit up???
The company is accused of conspiring against the US by using fake social media accounts to ‘sow discord’ in the country.
For the 50th time, how is that against the law?
Because People Voted Against The Designated Victor when it Was HER TURN!
And apparently those potential Hillary voters are so weak-minded they can be persuaded by farcical social media trolling.
Well, NPC behaviour is easily modded.
One of my friends was talking about Russian interference in the election. I asked her if it had swayed her vote and she gave me a look that suggested I was (more) stupid. See, the influence only affects other ‘lesser’ people whose votes shouldn’t be counted anyway.
“Because People Voted Against The Designated Victor when it Was HER TURN!”
It was supposed to be Hillary vs Jeb. It’s always supposed to be Hillary vs Jeb. We can’t be letting the people just vote for any ol crazy. Their choices must be carefully chosen by their betters.
I don’t think even Jeb wanted Jeb to run.
They can’t even define or describe ‘sow discord’
If the country was properly united, Hillary would have won in a landslide!
sow discord = People saying stuff they don’t like.
“Troll Farm” sounds a bit discriminatory. Shouldn’t that be “Ideologically nonbinary bridge oppressed knuckle draggers”?
You need to understand the FYTW provisions. I know, that’s tough for people in Japan.
Something something unregistered foreign agent, McCain-Feingold something something.
But enough about Hillary as SOS.
how is that against the law?
Agreed. This is the sort of thing you expect out of Third World dictatorships, not the ostensible leaders of the free world.
If it were against the law, shouldn’t they be going after the platforms for aiding and abetting?
May finally be the end for Sears and KMart. They’ll be going to department store heaven with Montgomery Ward.
Perhaps the other direction…
“Why is the Sears catalog always in the bathroom?”

“In case we run out of toilet paper”
“Why is all that toilet paper under your bed?”

Wow, Teenage Straff did not know how to properly clean up after himself.
+1 Jizz sock.
“Why are your socks crunchy?”

The govermen… wha? … it shutdown?
how is the internet still working?
It’s not. It gridlocked after net nuetrality’s repeal when you started getting charged to visit sites by your ISP.
Huh… must not use CenturyLink.
Fuck CenturyLink with an Atomic Bomb up the Arsehole. I will never ever ever go back. When i moved i had to switch from CenturyLink. They Cut my Internet a week early. When i called them up they put me on hold for an hour and then told me that if i had called an hour earlier they could have fixed it but now i had to “re-sign up” on a new contract and that they could get someone out in 5 days to come turn it back on. Needles to say i blew up. How the fuck can you turn off my internet but you have to schedule some retard to come “Turn it back on”.
Because they’re punishing you for leaving, that’s why.
Well it’s their own damn fault for not providing and service worth a damn where i was moving to. When i called about the move I was originally going to transfer service but the fastest they had was 5 gb/sec, The sales dude said that i should just cancel.

I am horribly disappointed that the guy didn’t get his ass kicked. The clerk caving was tragic.
didn’t have sound on but, that looks like it’s getting way too intense for the kind of store they are in.
Wild Bill doesn’t like getting misgendered. Put the oil on.
Two things.
1) That man certainly seems in control of his faculties and is extremely well-grounded.
2) Give that clerk the fucking best customer service of the year award right now. That dude should no-shit get a raise. A fucking huge dude who has…pretty obviously had a psychological break is yelling at you over some bullshit and damaging the store…and you calmly deal with it as a 110lb dude who has no fucking clue what’s going on?
No sarcasm, fucking respect. If I’m corporate then I’m gonna be giving that dude a raise/promotion.
Meanwhile, in the real world, they probably shitcanned the clerk an hour later.
Damn, that dude is pissed.
“Stop misgendering me!”
“OK. Could you kindly leave, Cunt.”
Damn, I love this timeline. Dudes can now roid rage if they’re dressed like chicks.
I wonder which game was being returned
Christ, what a front hole.
He wishes
YIkes. Around here that is a good way to get shot. Start threatening and being aggressive to store clerks here I promise they are going to at least think about reaching for a gun…and they all have them.
Indulging people’s mental illnesses is such a good idea
Xe seems nice.
He should have at least gotten a “Nice matching shoes and T, Goldilocks”.
What a world.
Not very lady-like behavior
Ooh that would have been some grade A level trolling if someone had dropped that line.
“You may be a woman, sir. But you are no lady.”
Ma’am, mother fucker, it’s ma’am!
“My pronouns are ‘Our Lord and Saviour’ and ‘Your Sublime Majesty’. If you won’t respect mine, why should I respect yours?”
That’s Zory. IIRC he’s an ex navy seal turned she who put her hand around Ben Shapiro’s neck and threatened to “send him home in an ambulance” on national tv.
The other panalist took Zory’s side telling Shapiro he should have known his comments would cause this reaction.
Shapiro had said Zory was genetically a man and beleiving he was she is a delusion.
Culture war gold, Jerry.
Check youtube if interested.
I do not hear “fucking.” Damn.
I certainly do.
Hell, yeah.
Fuck yeah. Then again, I could’ve sworn it was “wrapped up like a douche, you know I rode her in the night.”
Well, that’s because that’s what he actually says.
I don’t give a good god damn shit what the liner notes say. That is exactly what he says. No one says “douche” instead of “deuce” unless they are, in fact, an aging stereotypical gay man with a lisp who has stroked out.
*contemplates*
…I see how this now weakens my argument. But that IS what he says. And he knows it.
While Obama’s admin dramatized the hell out of a partial shutdown, it’s not even noticeable under Trump’s.
It’s almost as if word did not come down from On High for the drones to make the shutdown as inconvenient as possible for the tax paying proles. Last time, the Forest Service sent people to places they probably had not bothered to visit in years to post “Closed Due to Shutdown” notices.
“Rope off that Memorial!”
“Rope off the unmanned open-air public memorial that doesn’t even have a fence? I’d better get time and a half when the retro kicks in.”
/Gov Worker.
The company is accused of conspiring against the US by using fake social media accounts to ‘sow discord’ in the country.
If “sowing discord” is now illegal, I want to see the newsroom personnel of the NYT and WaPo frogmarched off to the slammer.
Leave me out of this
Yeah, isn’t #Resist pretty much the definition of sowing discord?
Pfft, no. We’re on the right side of history. Not giving us what we want is sowing discord.
/Prog
Can’t what to see the harvest we reap.
If “sowing discord” is illegal then someone better arrest the talking heads at CNN and MSNPC.
Troll farms are made up of many social media users who work together to spread information or disinformation in a bid to impact public opinion.
Those Kardashians had better watch their step. The G-men are on to them.
So the media are actually a bunch of troll farms.
More lies and prevarication!
Just days after claiming that “many” furloughed government workers told him they’re fine with not getting paid as long as he secures additional funding for a border wall, President Donald Trump tweeted Thursday morning that “most of the people not getting paid are Democrats.”
Trump, who offered no support for his claim, fired off the tweet early Thursday morning as the government shutdown entered its sixth day.
Yes, yes, we all know the majority of government workers are libertarians.
“Guaranteeing that our dedicated government workers have financial security should not be a partisan issue.”
Government thinking in a nutshell. Who in the free market has financial security besides those who earned it?
The chindren of those who earned it who squander it before their children can inherit too?
When you go for a snark, but make a typo. Snarko.
Funnily enough, knowing how to type is actually not a prerequisite for work in IT, shitposting on the internet, or writing books.
Though proofreaders get more expensive if you are known for making too many mistakes.
Smells like White Privilege.
That was me.
Sorry.
An albino?
Well the DoD is still getting paid (their budget has been passed) and that is probably the only department with a majority of Republican voters, so that is probably true.
^This…
Thank you, you tax paying bastards.
Democratic senators responded on Twitter to Trump’s early morning comment.
This is outrageous. Federal employees don’t go to work wearing red or blue jerseys. They’re public servants. And the President is treating them like poker chips at one of his failed casinos. https://t.co/bxkt67E9Bq
— Mark Warner (@MarkWarner) December 27, 2018
Once again, our “stable genius” President is spewing lies. US federal employees serve the United States—not one party. Guaranteeing that our dedicated government workers have financial security should not be a partisan issue. #ThursdayThoughts https://t.co/Q25iiKaYvR
— Senator Bob Menendez (@SenatorMenendez) December 27, 2018
Well, if an honest, upstanding guy like Bob Menendez says it, that’s good enough for me.
Kiss my ass Warner.
Does anybody actually believe that horseshit?
That’s what I dont get. The mendacity and duplicity of the left and never Trumpers is truly off of the scale. Who buys their horseshit? Anybody?
Yes, the SEIU is renowned for being non-partisan in their support. Which is why NPR had a president of one of their locals on to talk about how evil Trump is.
If he only wants to pay “dedicated government workers”, I’m down with that.
The couple dozen of them? I suppose I be down with at well.
“Federal employees don’t go to work wearing red or blue jerseys”
This sentence is half right.
95% of the federal employees who donated in 2016 donated to Clinton.
Yup. I remember the blistering denunciations that Warner and Menendez wrote against the politicization of the fed workers when that op-ed came out that said there was a secret Resistance working against Trump’s agenda inside the bureaucracy.
US federal employees serve the United States—not one party.
Officially, yes. Unofficially, no.
It’s some sort of bizarre coincidence that DC votes 99% democrat.
No self respecting government employee actually lives in that shit-hole.
If they’re public servants, they need to treat us like we’re their masters.
I am finished with work. It’s done. It’s over.
I’ve turned all of my alarms off. I don’t have to dread the Monday afternoon walk to the office. I don’t have to sit in silence in the teacher’s room for hours a day. I don’t have to go down two floors to go to take a shit because it’s the only bathroom that has toilet paper. I no longer have to be surrounded by the noxious fumes of kimchi jjigae and other dishes created out of war-torn necessity. I no longer have to become incensed by children that I have grown to actively despise.
Right now it still feels like the beginning of the weekend. But Monday morning is going to be revelation.
Sorry that I’ve been on this theme for quite a while these past few weeks. Honestly a 6 month panic attack at work.
Let’s get pissed and watch porn. C’mon Q where are ya?
If Q’s links are what passes for porn in your benighted corner of the world, I’m glad you’re leaving it.
We have a lot of porn filters here. Lots of shit gets blocked. There are so many videos that I can’t watch on youtube because you have to verify your age to make sure that you’re at least 19. I have to register with my phone number, which is a process that never works, despite having a Korean phone number. I’m gonna go out on a limb and assume the glitch/pettiness comes from having a western name in a country that’s 99.5% Korean.
However, I have forever gone to 4chan’s adult gif page for my erotic recreational material. Korea doesn’t know what 4chan is. Tis a fact that amuses and arouses me.
I’ve been following your end of school posts. Are you leaving Korea and teaching for good or just going on vacation.
I’m done with work and flying out of Korea January 29th. I’m going back home to spend time with the nephews who are now old enough to know who I am. I don’t to be that uncle that they’ve never known. And I will eat everything that has ever existed or will exist.
I’m moving into freelance editing/proofreading/writing online. So I’ll be able to get some contacts and work while I’m at home. I already have side gigs that I’ve taken with one company–not much money but I’ve also been working full-time. Good people to know.
Then my girlfriend and I are moving to Chiang Mai. April for me, probably. She’s going to get another teaching gig, but I feel like DiNiro in Heat. I’m never going back to that shit. I know that I can if I need to, but even then I’d do it online to be more flexible. I’m very much relying on the cost-of-living advantages of living in Thailand as I start out.
“And I will eat everything that has ever existed or will exist.”
Except cereal with milk*, or spicy food.
Honestly the idea pod moving to Thailand and not liking spicy food. :O
*The secret is to just put the right amount of milk such that you can eat the layer of cereal in contact with the milk before it gets soggy. I know you have issues eating fast, but that’s the way to do it. Divine.
Or eat actual food instead of breakfast cereal.
Thai food is hands-down the best Asian food. Vietnamese is a middlingly-distant second. (I do order “White Boy Spicy.”)
I like cooking and will do it frequently when I don’t want to spend a buck for a full and glorious meal. (I’ve been to Thailand 4 times now.)
I went to a nice grocery store as part of my research in Chiang Mai. It took an insane amount of discipline to look at the cured meat and cheese departments and not orgasm like Chikatilo strangling a young Russian girl to death.
Ugh. Now I know what it feels like to brush my balls against the depravity of SF. (The last Subaru tale was actually disturbing for me.)
*goes to get a bowl of Fruity Pebbles with almond
milkjuice.Hands down. Ugh. Guess you don’t like the freshest food produced by chefs that dedicate their lives to perfection of subtle yet delicious cuisine. Go back to your Fruit Loops. (Enjoy your trip back, though).
I’ll take sausage, hash browns and eggs over cereal most days, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t an optimal way to consume cereal. (Also, only use whole milk)
You could always become a lady-boy.
Nah, there’s not enough pixelation (yes I know that’s Japan).
I know the feeling. Next Friday is my last day. My boss is flying in for a couple days, which is nice because he’s a good guy, fun to hang out with and shoot the shit, and (personally) more than a little sympathetic to why I’m getting out.
OMWC, without details could you discuss why your workplace, position, or work has you seeking new opportunities? I manage very intelligent and creative people of all shapes and sizes and I want to prevent my people from getting to that point if I can.
In a nutshell, I spent most of my career in small companies and as an entrepreneur. After selling off my last business, I took a job with a megacorp that had nearly a thousand business units that worked autonomously- because of that, my (at that time) boss, our business/sales manager, and I worked very closely and had complete control over all aspects of our business unit. It was great, we were growing the business nicely, were creating excellent products, and had very happy customers.
This of course could not be tolerated. A new CEO decided that the autonomous business model was horribly inefficient. So my boss and the business manager got fired, and our business got rolled in as part of a much larger division. This saves a lot of money, see? So I went from being a key driver of the business to a cog in the machine. Worse yet, upper management in the division didn’t really understand our business, and our manufacturing and quality were taken out of our hands. Product quality and delivery declined sharply, the new product pipeline was so heavily bureaucratized that getting anything new out was made nearly impossible, and customers started falling away. Senior people either quit or were fired to save money. Fuck that.
So I found a small company that badly needed an overall strategic technical manager who could run new product development, engineering, manufacturing, and quality. And that’s where I’ll be.
Thanks for the synopsis. I’m feeling similar issues with my company. I’ve worked for small independent divisions or small companies until quite recently. The burocracy in new product development has been present but manageable. I try to keep it away from my technical and creative technical people, but it’s becoming harder as the company gets larger.
The internal nickname for the marketing group who control the stage-gate is “Sales Prevention Team.”
It’s an outrage!
Former US Army four-star Gen. Barry McCaffrey, who was awarded three Purple Heart medals, two Distinguished Service Crosses, and two Silver Stars, described Trump’s visit as “embarrassing” and “entirely inappropriate.”
McCaffrey said “it’s a good thing that the president went to Iraq and visited the troops,” but suggested that what was supposed to be a morale-boosting visit between troops and the commander-in-chief, became a political affair instead.
———
Trump, who did not meet with Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi during the trip, was also criticized for allegedly snubbing the leader of Iraq.
“The whole notion of going into Iraq and not genuflecting … the Iraqis is simply outrageous,” McCaffey said. “And announcing we’re going to use it as the site from which we’ll conduct combat operations in other nations, I mean, it’s just inciting Iraqi sovereignty concerns.
The nerve of that guy, visiting the troops and talking about politics.
“Inciting Iraqi sovereignty concerns” you say? It’s a little late to be worrying about that, isn’t it?
ORANGE MAN BAD! ORANGE MAN BAD!
Perhaps Trump could suggest another line of work for McCaffrey.
Look dude, if you want to retire all you have to do is say so.
“Former”
All you need to know about McCaffrey is that he is a crazed drug warrior who was Clinton’s “drug czar”.
Good old “shoot ’em in the back” McCaffrey
Shocking that the military industrial complex is unhappy with Trump.

61 works.
That is not the sexiest of chive. I would actually call it the opposite of that. 33 looks like she was in Face/Off with Gary Oldman’s character in Hannibal.
2 wins Best in Show.
17’s stomach and hips are divine.
21 looks like Kennedy.
26’s face.

Chinese schools enforce ‘smart uniforms’ with GPS tracking system to monitor students
Facial recognition further ensures that each uniform is worn by its rightful owner to prevent students from cheating the system.
Skipping classes triggers an alarm to inform teachers and parents of the truancy, while an automatic voice alarm activates if a student walks out of school without permission.
So the security can be defeated simply by changing your shirt?
Facial recognition. You’d have to change your shirt and go from Travolta to Cage.
Facial recognition – a technology so unreliable that I don’t even have to make a lacist joke about it.
Do the Chinese autoclave their uniforms?
That is some creepy shit right there. How long before they require everyone to participate?
It seems as though the rise of capitalism in China has not weakened communist control of China as ma y predicted and hoped for.
The rise in capitalism coincided with a rise in technology preventing a loosening of control.
Local school board busybody gets a stiffy.
The funny thing about writing is the number of subjects you have to read up on. Metallurgy, mining, historical commodity prices, sailing ships, scurvy, traditional tanning, vernacular architecture…
Now I’m stuck trying to describe interior decor without using the words ‘baroque’ or ‘rococo’.
Fabulous?
Does not fit the narrator’s voice.
Faboo?
Papal?
Gaudy if it is in fact baroque
But I do like the expository introduction to the city.
No fooling me. That’s Mar-a-lago.
No need to fool you, you’re fooling yourself.
Seriously, you’re a fine writer. Describing scenery is my least favorite part of writing anything.
If I don’t paint the backdrop, I don’t have the feel of the place in my own mind, so the foreground action becomes rather more difficult.
Especially in the sequence to follow, where it’s the narrator, alone, breaking into one of the fancy houses.
“…you didn’t see much gold…”
Change to “…you did not see much gold…”
I know, I know, I use contractions all of the time in informal writing so it’s rich coming from me, but in this kind of writing it out looks/reads better. Just my two cents.
*Reads over to find the typo*
Sure as shit, Muphry’s law strikes again.
I disagree. If the narrator uses contractions in their normal dialog, than you should stay true to their speaking style and use contractions.
Sugarfree agrees
I think I have it. *checks clock* and lunchtime isn’t quite over yet.
Honestly a 6 month panic attack at work.
Seriously- congratulations for getting out of that. Good luck in the new life.
Facial recognition further ensures that each uniform is worn by its rightful owner to prevent students from cheating the system.

There’s a ton of people in this country who would endorse this. We’re probably just a couple missing children away from it.

Damn it people, stop trying to take ideas from Black Mirror. The entire point is that they’re terrible ideas.
Your kid is a loser
But happy and free.
Several people were talking about reading Epictitus(discourses, I assume), and Marcus Aurelius (particularly meditations) last night. I’ll make 2-3 suggestions as someone who just finished reading both a week or so back. Meditations is just random thoughts, kind of a journal. It’s relatively easy reading, but it won’t give you a structured look at stoicism. If you only have time for one book, read Discourses. If you don’t even have time for that, read only the Enchiridion, it is a cliff notes version of the philosophy.
Thanks! I’m going to set myself to that task. I’ve read parts of all the books you mentioned but as part of my new year’s resolution I’ve decided I will read Meditations and the Enchiridion in their entirety and then perhaps move on to Seneca.
I’ve been wanting to write a stoicism v. Libertarianism article for a long time. Let’s see if it happens. Good article btw.
Lack, I’d be interested to see that article. AFAICT, there isn’t much conflict between the two.
I actually found this a very approachable modern translation of the Enchiridion. I read it first, and then read Meditation and Discourses in classical translation. I don’t think much is lost by the adaptation.
That appears to be something other than the Enchiridion, which is quite short, I think 20 pages or so in the version I have.
FWIW, I pretty much exclusively use modem translations. I am completely self taught in philosophy, and while there may be some marginal utility in finding the exact definition of a Greek word, the lost time and effort simply isn’t worth it for me. I am willing to accept for the most part the efforts of others in that area.
It may be the whole Discourses.
Also Seneca is worth reading as well. There are multiple free translations available on the intertubz.
You know what I hate? Dealing with sysadmins who refuse to give you the right permissions to configure things yourself AND also refuse to do config setup for you in a timely manner. It is fucking one or the other. And to top it off, this shop is a firm believer in only granting you the most minimal access to start with and slowly adding to it as you “prove” that you need it. Just grant me everything, and then we can pare back until it stops working!
I have a project demo due today and I have spent at least half my time trying to cajole or browbeat the sysadmins into setting things up so that my code will run. FUCK! Especially maddening that there is another project that is very similar to what I need, but they refuse to use that as a template for setting things up. (Because they won’t just grant that much access off the bat until I can show I need it).
Been there man. It’s especially frustrating when they want you to “Prove” yourself for the job you were hired to do. At my current job i had to spend ~4 months getting the permissions i needed to do the job i was actually hired to do. I mean if you don’t think i was competent enough, why did you hire me in the first place?
I hear ya man. “Rights by groveling” is no way to run a company
I’m still stuck on version 2015 of Inventor, updates have been repeatedly requested from various tiers of management with to no avail.
About a year ago IT apparently got tired enough (or no single IT person wanted it on their plate) of us asking for updates to our nesting software that I got rights to the license server to update it myself. Had the server and all users updated in half a day. We originally requested it be done 2 years previously.
I know I’m going to get flamed here for this, but I think the problem is that sometimes the folks in IT start to think that the point of the organization is IT. A comparable situation is the issue with passwords. Consider the standard rules that are recommended or required:
1. Use a long string of numbers, different case letters, and symbols for your password.
2. Don’t use a password that is readily associatable with you.
3. Don’t write down your passwords.
4. Don’t use the same passwords for multiple sources.
5. Regularly change your passwords.
I’ve challenged folks in IT security to try to remember two or three such strings. They consistently can’t.
Every IT guysi know uses Password Managers. You know the ones that you only have to remember one easy to crack password to then let somone have access to all your passwords.
Honestly, I can’t blame them for doing that. The ridiculous set of rules they’ve established around password management kind of make it inevitable.
I was being a bit tounge in cheek, they are super nice and useful, but you have to make sure you have a pretty good password for it.
Which really just means a long password, as putting numbers and crap in it doesn’t help as much as adding 5 more characters to a password.
This. I have a corporate account with Roboform and I tell my employees to use it. It works.
Exactly true.
See yesterdays talk about the bean counters.
If your company is not a tech company IT is on the same level of importance as the janitor and the security guard. You need them to clean up messes, change light bulbs, and keep vandals away, but they have nothing to do with your actual business.
If you treat IT that way and underfund it, don’t whine about slow computers and poor performance of the key applications.
You sound exactly like a teacher’s union rep. “Give me more funding! We need to install some new garbageware I heard was awesome!” Then you spend a few grand on software that makes the entire company grind to a halt for 3 weeks as every single person has to relearn how to do their job through the new super system that will tarck every metric and blah blah blah. Then 6 weeks later you nuke the whole thing because it sucks and go back to what you had.
Most businesses would run better with Windows XP era software. You know, the last iteration of working windows.
No, you missed my point.
The business wants to roll out an expanded HR app to cover every agency and add in self-service options for the individual employees along with all the bells and whistles. We tell them how much it’s going to cost to accomplish what they asked for and they go “Oh, no that’s way too much, make it cost less” so we ask what the budget target should be, they just say “less”, so we trim and we trim, and eventually implement something, at which point they complain that it doesn’t do what they asked for at breakneck speed.
Likewise when they complain that current apps are slow, we tell them about how everything is heaps on the same handful of servers because they won’t approve buying more and ask for the funds to expand capacity, they go “no, that costs too much, make it run faster with what we’ve got” and we tweak and tweak, but can’t get the gains they expect because we’re simply too heavily loaded for available capacity.
Or how we tell them “the hardware is dangerously old and could fail” and they go “your replacement costs too much” then get shocked when the whole business goes down when a CPU dies mid-workday on the core database server.
I can’t help your decision to work for Government. My point is that IT workers seem to believe they are the core of a business when in fact they are peripheral. To return to my original analogy, at a brick and mortar store the customer experience is enhanced by clean, well maintained premises, but no one regards the janitor or maintenance workers as the core of the business. IT occupies a similar place (again I am excepting tech companies).
You basically perform the same function in the virtual world that Bob the facilities guy performs in the physical world. If that is insulting to you perhaps the issue is with your low opinion of the facilities guys.
No, I’m saying that if your business depends on the customer floor being clean and shiny but you refuse to buy mops or cleaning supplies, then bitching about how poor a job the janitor is doing every time he asks for the tools needed to provide the level of service demanded, then you are not understanding the role played in your business by these groups.
And as to the “Government IT” bit. One of the advantages I have is keeping up my contacts with the consultants who cycle in and out of this place – trust me, that attitude of expecting miracles for free extends to the private sector as well.
if your business depends on the customer floor being clean and shiny but you refuse to buy mops or cleaning supplies, then bitching about how poor a job the janitor is doing
Ok, fair enough. But it seems like IT never wants a new mop instead they want the newest super duper floor cleaner tech that they read about on some tech blog, which will require every other person working at the company to relearn their job, and which will probably not work, since no tech really works well in its first iteration.
I have met those dipshits and loathe them as well.
IT done right is invisible.
That’s the problem. You never notice those of us who are doing our jobs correctly, and see the embarassments.
Jarflax:
I’m in IT, my job is to help the company make money, and I’m aware of this. One of the directors at my old company used a simple question to judge who she wanted working on their service desk. Assume you’ve got a delivery driver call, a manager call, and a call from her. How do you prioritize those calls? To her, the proper answer was the driver first (if they’re calling it’s revenue impacting and time critical), the other two didn’t matter as much.
But, this doesn’t mean that people can blame IT for their mistakes and poor planning. If you know it takes 2-3 days to create a new user account, escalating it after 4 hours because they started two days ago and can’t work isn’t IT’s fault. It’s your fault for not putting in the request when you decided to hire the person.
@Nephilium – That director sounds smart. I interviewed at one place (a university) where my answer of prioritizing the classroom full of students was the disqualifying factor. (More experienced me would have countered by asking if there was a written policy on prioritizing conflicting service calls). There was also the helpdesk I did work on where user based additional priority was given to calls from supernumary executives who didn’t have much impact on the day to day but were in the orbit of the CEO.
Everything in every business boils down to serving the customer. Certainly IT is necessary and important to this end. I hear a steady stream of griping by IT folk about how stupid and annoying their ‘customers’ are and it makes me want to lash out at them in the same way that hearing customer service or retail workers bitching about how stupid and annoying their customers are. I also am dealing with a situation where idiots keep making IT decisions based on sales pitches which make my life more difficult. (Office 365 is an abomination before the Lord, and some Biblical plagues need to descend)
Profits come from serving customers. This is the only place they legitimately come from. While everyone should be courteous, the employee has an actual obligation to serve the customer. The customer does not have an obligation to serve the employee. This means that the customer who is rude is simply a person being rude. The employee who is rude is not doing what they are paid to do.
UCS: She was, unfortunately when we got brought into the whole corporate IT department (we were working for a group that had been acquired a couple years back), they put drivers on the bottom of the priority list. Because the people making the decisions never worked closely with the field workers. There’s multiple reasons I’m no longer with that company.
Here’s the thing – bitching about our customers here does not mean we’re not providing the service being paid for. The same with the public-facing employees.
We can’t tell them to their faces “you, sir, are a moron and an asshole”, so we sit quietly, do our job, and vent online.
I have never had say in the technology rolled out beyond the advisory. As far as I can tell, the people who say “we’re going to X” are no longer involved in actual IT work, if they ever were. These are management decisions that we can only influence by trying to cajole the manager back to a sensible position – if we ever get to speak with the decision maker that is.
My last response was @Jarflax.
IT done right is invisible.
I’m not sure I agree. I’ve had IT that actually helps me do what I want. Sometimes they take a bit longer than I’d like to get me on their calendar. But, that’s because they wind up in demand.
The resources issue isn’t negligible. I understand that.
But, I’ve also had IT that is an active hindrance to doing my job. And they expect the users to work their jobs around the IT, rather than vice versa.
I’m not trying to trash IT. Good IT is important.m But, lousy IT can make even easy processes a nightmare. And lousy IT is almost always the IT that expects the organization to revolve around the IT.
@wdalasio – My perspective gets skewed because I work serverside. over 80% of my customers are other IT folks. The remaining 20% who talk to be are executive level or longstanding contacts from when I rolled out applications upgrades.
And these were upgrades. My first task at the state was to help the data entry folks in application processing get off the old green screen program onto something more responsive and easily modified. First thing I did was sit with them and go through their business process so I knew what they were doing.
They were happy with the results, which were easier on the eyes and less complicated to use. (Though some retraining was required, there was user buy-in, so it went smoothly)
Its more like Accounting. Underfund/understaff accounting (or let it run according to their convenience) and eventually no one will want to work for or do business with you. Same with IT. Yes, the staff is your customer, but you are also responsible for many things so they don’t have to be. There should be always be some tension between convenience and inconvenience in IT. A good IT shop will attempt to balance security and usablity. A bad IT shop will just say no to things due to security/cost/time and then wonder why there are all these mini-fiefdoms of IT-related stuff in other departments.
The best IT department I ever worked with was at a mid-sized IT consultancy. They hired me twice and had a different IT director both times, but the speech when they handed you your laptop was “this is your computer until you put a virus on my network. We understand people will travel a lot and be on their own, but please don’t put anything on the hard-drive you don’t want your mother to see. I will email her files I think are questionable.”
Also, with all of the advances in networking, there is no reason not to setup small virtual-nets with jump-boxes that are reasonably sandboxed from each other for people doing development and demo like Pope Jimbo. They can be admins on all the boxes except the jump box.
LOL except when the entire business runs on software written by the IT folks.
5 actually makes things worse. A sufficiently complex password can last a long time, but if you have to change it every X days, you’re going to end up writing it down.
The root cause of all this shit is the fact that most of IT is a one way street. I need their help, but they never need mine (because they have the fucking root password).
If you know you will never need a favor from someone, you don’t feel any need to ever help them out.
I’m used to working in smaller more agile shops and this shit is killing me. I feel like such an asshole when I escalate this shit up the pole to the directors, but it is the only way I have ever gotten any traction on the stuff I absolutely need done.
I know exactly what you mean, all those ungrateful people from the business areas constantly bugging me about why I haven’t figured out their bizarre and unique to them issues when they don’t even give me the information about what they’re doing and assume I already know everything their job entails and what they need.
Our IT guys HATE that complex-and-mandatory-reset password shit. “This is a guarantee that people will put passwords on easily-accessible sticky notes and greatly reduces actual security.” Our IT guys are smart.
But we have to do it because it’s corporate policy. See my rant elsewhere in this thread.
I Tease the IT guys (were friends) that they just single highhandedly killed communication here. As part of a new policy to ensure data security they published a new mobile policy that means if you run Teams or Outlook apps on your phone you have to give the company enough permissions on you phone to factory reset it remotely. Funily enough, everyone decided to uninstall Teams and outlook on their phones, because the company said they would only pay for phones for people who “Needed” to have Teams/Outlook on it.
There’s a fix for that. You bug the shit out of them every 5 minutes to change things for you, whether they need changed or not. By the next day, you have full admin rights on the server.
“Open up a service request and direct it to the appropriate managers for approval. Once we recieve the approved service request, a technician will be assigned and a change request opened. Upon approval of the change request, the technician will make the requested adjustment to the system.”
– Actual process.
Note, it is uncommon for the full process to actually be employed. Usually if there are repeated adjustments, we’ll leave one ticket open for all of it, even stuff we didn’t know about beforehand.
But if you’re a dick, we can resort to malicious compliance with the official policy.
“it is uncommon for the full process to actually be employed”
A sign that the process itself is not useful.
Hey, I didn’t design the process. It was an edict from on high.
The process is the punishment.
Michelle Obama Voted Most Admired Woman Of The Year
Failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton no longer holds the title of the most admired woman in America, a status she has retained for 17 years. Now, it’s former First Lady Michelle Obama’s turn.
According to Gallup, Michelle Obama, after finishing second to Hillary no more than three times, earned the top slot for most admired woman in 2018, followed closely by Oprah Winfrey. Both Hillary Clinton and First Lady Melania Trump were in third place. The annual Gallup question, which asks Americans to name the man and woman whom they most admire, has been ongoing since 1946.
“Also among the top 10 most admired women this year is Queen Elizabeth, who placed in the top 10 for a record 50th time,” reports Gallup. “German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, human rights activist Malala Yousafzai and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi are the other top 10 finishers this year.”
Admired for what, exactly? What has she done besides starve school children and contribute to Twitter hashtag campaigns? ///rhetorical
Like her Husband, she has found that Honors and Acclimation are much easier to get when you haven’t actually accomplished anything. It still disgusts me how people revere Obama. The entirety of my generation was brainwashed by the Media/Academic establishment to think the man could do no wrong.
With the exceptions of Haley (not a fan, either) and Malala, how big of a shitlord am I that I don’t even like, let alone admire, any of those ladies.
The only person on that list worth a damn is Malala. She has actual courage, not the hashtag, phony kind.
I’m surprised Christine Blasey Ford is not on the list. Or Rose McGowan.
Noticeably absent are significant female business executives like Barbara Rentler, CEO of Ross Stores Inc which is killing the department stores, or Lisa Su of AMD , which is finally making a turnaround.
Instead we get celebrities and professional politicians, both of which ought to be viewed as “not quite scum”.
Regarding the Cincinnati trades.
The NL Central is going to be a fucking bloodbath next year. Cubs are THE BEST (ALSLDKFJEWOIADWAAAAAAAAAHHHH!), Brewers are very good, St Louis with Goldschmidt, Cincy investing hard….whoever wins the division is going to have a much worse record than their ability would normally warrant.
Cubs get a healthy Bryant, hopefully Darvish can come back from injury, my boy Hendricks continues his magic, and Lester pulls something out of his oldish man hat in his final year of his contract….Rizzo is who he always is and my position-player boy Baez can sustain his monster 2017 season….I still feel good.
But it’s going to be another beautiful slog.
Nats fan here people seem to be sleeping on your division hard it will be a fun ride. Cincy will still suck, no pitching at all. St. Louis will be good because they’ve got satan on their side. Brewers are legit. The Cubs are legit. The pirates are the pirates. So should be a good race.
Darvish cannot come back from being a head case.
Why they jettisoned Arrieta defies understanding.
Arrieta is a solid overpaid innings eater. The starting pitching market is absolutely insane.
Wow. People voting as individuals and it pisses off Democrats. Who’d a thunk?

The way this has been framed by leftists still grinds my gears.
Roughly 420,000 federal workers have been working without pay while another 380,000 have been furloughed. The shutdown began last Saturday, days before the Christmas recess.
It’s not like they aren’t going to get paid.
The fact that we have that many federal workers at all (and it’s only a fraction of the total) is a disgrace.
The average federal employee costs 120,000 per year in wages and benefits.
That 420,000 working without pay for a year would be a 50.4 billion dollar savings.
In other words, if the shutdown lasts a total of 26 federal work days, then The Wall is revenue neutral.
Or would be, if they weren’t already guaranteed back pay.
Not if they never end the shutdown.
“Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) tweeted on Thursday. “He’s taken our government hostage over his outrageous demand for a $5 billion border wall that would be both wasteful and ineffective.””
Suddenly you’re concerned about government waste?
He’s called Whip Dick for a reason.
I passed right over that. Must need more caffeine.
Remember that time Democrats called Republicans Domestic Terrorists over some budget issue?
taken our government hostage
25% “shutdown” =/= “taking hostage”.
Suddenly you’re concerned about government waste?
Principals, not principles. This is literally a drop in the bucket (if that…) and is far more doable than anything else Team Blue wants. I’m interested to see if The Wicked Witch of the West and Schmoobs blink now that they are dealing with a Team Red Pres. that has a backbone.
“This is literally a drop in the bucket (if that…)”
By my calculations 5.7 Billion is 12 hours of government spending.
Thank you Rhywun for reminding me that I own an Instant Pot. I made a corned beef round last night that turned out spectacularly. It made dinner, today’s lunch and today’s dinner.
Also, anyone who is so foul as to cook cabbage with their corned beef should be flogged relentlessly.
Cabbage should be braised in butter, not boiled.
If you’re boiling corned beef, you should be boiled yourself. Crock pot, oven or pressure cooker. Boiling deals both color and flavor from corned beef.
I haven’t used a pressure cooker yet, but I find that crock pots cook nothing well. Meat dries out, flavors in soups and stews don’t blend well, all in all what you gain in ease and convenience by using the crock pot you lose in flavor.
You appear to be using it wrong, because I don’t get those kinds of results.
Anyway, don’t ever boil corned beef. It turns gray and flavorless.
Is this a situation where you are distinguishing between boiling and simmering? Because unless you’re putting it in the crock-pot dry, you’re boiling it.
I cannot even imagine how salty a corned beef not cooked in water would be. Does your baked version even slice, or do you chip it out of the mass of salt crystals?
It slices, and if you make the mistake of cutting across the grain, the slices fall apart.
And the small water at the bottom of the crock pot to avoid dehydrating doesn’t cover the meat as it does when you’re boiling. It’s actually closer to steaming – as with the pressure cooker.
^^^That.
I was replying to @Jarflax, who is completely correct about the utility-deliciousness ratio of Crockpots.
I am baffled by this. I have had better results from crock pots that soud vide in avoiding drying out protein.
I made salisbury steak in it once that was good, but it took more work to make it like that than in a deep skillet.
If you put too much water in, then it tastes boiled and I hate boiled meat. I don’t like stews, and the only soup I really like is lobster bisque, clam chowder, and that seafood soup from Longhorn.
I am baffled by people that swear by crock pots (and I am not trying to be snarky here unlike above in the iT conversation). If I cook a stew on the stovetop I can control the temperature more carefully, can add ingredients to a more exact schedule (ie potatoes go in later in the process, softer veggies even later) and by stirring frequently the cooking is more even and the flavors are more blended. Crock pots gain in fire and forget, but lose in all the other areas. I suspect that pressure cooking solves some of these issues, possibly even better than stovetop, by speeding the process and preventing volitiles from boiling off, but having never used one I don’t know.
Off the top of my head I’ve made bread pudding, stocks, soups, steel cut oatmeal, and certain cuts of meat (such as pulled pork) in a slow cooker. They’re also useful for serving items warm that were made in something else (dips, stews, etc.).
Mine have sat unused since I got an Instant Pot.
They use pressure cookers on my cooking shows a lot – must be something to it.
Rhywun, the main advantage of a pressure cooker is that it reduces the time required to complete the process. It is essentially steaming, and if you bear that in mind, you can get some pretty spectacular results. (I tend to set mine to ten minutes for a personal portion of pork ribs, for example. Half an hour with the right cut and you have pulled-pork, etc)
Crock pots make lots of stuff well. Including country-style ribs.
Cabbage should be turned into either coleslaw or saurkraut. That’s it.
Shredded and stir fried with mustard seeds, ginger, red chiles, and turmeric.
Hmm…hadn’t considered stir fry…
OK, I’ll explore more options before taking a firm stance on this important issue.
I see you are a man of culture as well.
Low Culture is culture too.
True. Cabbage strips as noodles are pretty awesome in stir-fries.
1. Marinate meat (or tofu for OMWC) in a mixture of soy and Yellow Bird sauces
2. Stir fry, adding cabbage strips
3. Finish with hoisin sauce.

Non-profit organizations and private companies are working to provide financial assistance to roughly 800,000 people who won’t receive regularly scheduled paychecks as Congress failed to vote on a resolution to the partial government shutdown during a session Thursday.
The U.S. Office of Personnel Management, an agency which handles human resources for the government’s civilian workforce, advised thousands of employees who won’t be paid during government shutdown to reach out to creditors in order to work out alternative payment schedules.
The OPM released sample letters Thursday on Twitter to show shutdown workers how to ask for help from mortgage companies and landlords.
“As we discussed, I am a Federal employee who has recently been furloughed due to a lack of funding of my agency,” one sample letter reads. “Because of this, my income has been severely cut and I am unable to pay the entire cost of my mortgage, along with my other expenses.”
Oh, for fuck’s sake. The parasites have got to stick together. What are the odds those non-profits will be making money off of the shutdown?
If those fucking retards can’t scrounge up rent money, let ’em go to a payday lender or a pawnbroker.
“Because of this, my income has been severely cut and I am unable to pay the entire cost of my mortgage, along with my other expenses.”
It is customary to take precautions against interruptions in cash flow, such as maintaining an account that can fund your expenses for a few months or, if you have to, having an emergency credit card. Cry me a river.
You know I had some cash flow issues a couple years back, took money out of my mutual funds to cover the shortfall, and then of course when tax time rolled around, had to pay the IRS more of my money.
You think a form letter would have got me off the hook?
“If those fucking retards can’t scrounge up rent money, let ’em go to a payday lender or a pawnbroker.”
Geeze wouldn’t it be nice if Non-Profits and Government Bureaucrats hadn’t squashed Commercial banking products that were much cheaper than pay day lenders but served a similar function.
And, oh by the way,
While it is unclear what the future holds in this instance, in the past, government employees have usually received back pay at the end of shutdowns.
No kidding.
Never going to run out of commissary.

So the guard are into Gay Porn?
It’s not gay if they have tits.
And yet, it’s not straight if they have dicks.
Tits, by definition, are secondary. In other words the presence of tits is trumped by the absence of vagina.
Yes, but secondary sex characteristics are what indicate sexual desirability (unless you’re OMWC).

Ohio legislators on Thursday broadened gun-owners’ rights in the state by overturning a veto issued earlier this month by outgoing Republican Gov. John Kasich.
The bill includes a provision allowing off-duty police officers to carry concealed weapons and strengthens penalties against certain illegal firearm purchases. In cases where a defendant claims self-defense, the legislation also shifts the burden of proof to prosecutors.
———–
A spokesman for Gov. Kasich said the governor doesn’t always agree with legislators’ decisions and “on this issue he profoundly disagrees.”
Fuck you, Kasich.
Watch what you say about future LP vice presidential nominee, John Kasich.
Ugh.
That’s Mr. Vice President Ugh, to you
Of the three parts of the new law cited, two have nothing to do with expanding gun owner’s rights.
I’m still undecided about shifting the burden of proof in self-defense cases.
I was confused too.

I get inundated at this time of year with donation requests from various groups that somehow think I will give them money. The one that always perplexes me is when my undergraduate college and graduate college start hectoring me with e-mails (and sometimes phone calls in the case of the graduate school) asking for money. Why would anyone make a donation to a university? That’s like making a donation to the store that you bought your TV from. Except that TV store is already getting your tax dollars. We completed our transaction already, we have nothing more to discuss.
Especially when current trends indicate they will use your money to fund a new associate administrative assistant dean of diversification of Hispanic transgender blind wheelchair-bound otherkin.

These new nonprofits make clear with their own words that transparency is merely a means to the end of destroying the Trump administration. Their FOIA requests to date look like fishing expeditions designed to manufacture scandals, or attempts to overwhelm agencies with information demands. They’ve already proved how effective a strategy of piling ethics complaints on officials can be: It forced the resignation of Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt and Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke. And it’s easier when the press is on your side.
The groups in question look to be flush with cash; Mr. Trump is a great fundraiser for his adversaries. Not that there are details as to where that cash comes from. (Where’s the New Yorker’s Jane Mayer, scourge of “dark money,” when you need her?) Several of the groups are registered with the IRS as nonprofits under Section 501(c) of the tax code, which means they are not required to make public their donors. At least two, Restore Public Trust and Fix the Court, didn’t even bother with the IRS. They are instead “projects” of an outfit called New Venture Fund, a charity managed by the for-profit Arabella Advisors.
“The left has no bigger bogeyman than ‘dark money,’ but it plays the dark-money instrument like Isaac Stern, ” says Scott Walter, president of Capital Research Center, a right-leaning watchdog of nonprofits, which tracks groups on its Influencewatch.org site.

This guy is just saying what so many on the left actually think. It’s not the case that they share the rest of our goals and are just wrong about the means to those ends. Their goal has never been increased prosperity and human happiness. They want (other) people to be without. If it’s not for the welfare of the proletariat, it’s for Gaia or whatever other excuse they can drum up. Hell, it isn’t even necessarily power for themselves that they value. They value being able to lord that power over others.
Bingo. Also, see Boberson’s article from last night. He nails it too.

If you have misery for most and prosperity for you and the elect you get comfort, tasty food, a good life, and scads of people who will serve your every twisted desire in order to avoid starvation or the gulag. In the free world you only get to roleplay master to a sex slave, in commietopia you get to actually be the master. (of course, much like reincarnation fantasies the people spouting this crap always expect to be the master, but odds are you are going to be the slave.)
“When they see the reality of their world of social justice and equality they will not like it very much. They will want to dissent and dissent cannot be allowed. They will be squashed like cockroaches.” – Bezmenov
When talking about commie morons that guy never gets old, and he sure as hell knew what he was talking about.
Man, they throw around the Hatch Act like parents trying to get their kid to behave tell their kids Santa won’t bring them gifts if they are bad.
Aren’t the President and VP exempt from that?
I guess to the drowning man every straw looks like a life raft.
Um, not to be pedantic but they banned straws because some 9 year old said that a trillion of them were killing turtles or something and nobody checked the math.
Of the three parts of the new law cited, two have nothing to do with expanding gun owner’s rights.
Anything short of forcible confiscation is surrender to the NRA and their program of wholesale murder!
In the last ten years I have heard more than a few calls for the incarceration/killing of NRA rank and file members.
“Yeah, all those NRA members should be shot!”
We typically have Trumpistas in the Mist type articles, now we have My Life as an Undercover Deplorable.
