Good morning Glibs, I’m just one and half days from hitting the road. Hope your vacations are as near as mine.
After much speculation, Mueller finally releases the original 302 for Flynn’s interview after being ordered to by Judge Sullivan. It was under seal this whole time. This morning is Flynn’s sentencing day. Will he actually be sentenced only to be pardoned by Trump? Will the case be thrown out? Whatever happens will be a big fucking deal.
Please don’t let a libertarian girl down, fail like I know you have it in you!
Good news Michelangelo! A federal judge ruled New York’s ban on nunchucks unconstitutional.
Jenna Jameson on Keto. Wait am I stealing Q Continuum shtick?
Here are the most corrupt congressmen of 2018 according to a watchdog group.
Roger Stone spreading lies on Infowars? Why I never!
That’s all I got for today, before I leave I’ll give you a song as tradition dictates.
I take vacations to get away from coworkers.
This time of year, I can do that by going to work – they all leave.
Since I work in a big corp I have never been at work between Christmas and New Years
I work in a big corp, and the time between Christmas and New Year’s is packed with year end bullshit.
I work in an European corp and mostly no one does anything during the festive times unless they fucked up before or are an unlucky layouter. Anyway my line of work is not one where I ever have a deadline at year end.
No-one in European corporations actually works. This is known.
This year-end may be busier than normal.
All those children at the border?
I laughed out loud. Thanks!
I turned in my fall grades yesterday, so the rest of the week is going to be mostly (i) me chasing down the slackers who haven’t turned them in yet, (ii) responding to all my students who are unhappy with their grades, and (iii) trying to whittle down my email inbox. Oh yeah: (iiii) buying christmas presents.
How many of them students can “improve” their grades by washing your car, doing yard work for you, or cleaning the house? Not gonna ask the obvious question about cleaning the pipes and such…
I don’t want them to know where I live.
Because then they will no where to run after they escape your basement dungeon?
You said you wouldn’t tell.
You shouldn’t have cheaped out on the drugs you used to knock me out. If you can’t keep me dosed up, expect me to run and blab.
You’ll be back. They always come back.
Sometimes they come back… for more.
We went to a “no presents” policy about 8 years ago and it is great. No stress about presents and shopping makes this time of year so much better.
Probably a good idea. I only need two or three, and I know Mrs. Spartacus will always be pleased with shiny baubles.
Do you wrap them around your member as a means to make the gift more erm, personal? I ask cause I used to buy my ex whatever gift I fancied and a dildo. The later was so she could go fuck herself if she didn’t like the gift and complained I had not wasted enough time thinking about how to make it special.
*snort*
The only jewelry related stuff I ever bought my wife was a loupe (of course that was for the bedroom)
I can’t believe you’re not still married.
As a professor, your improper use of romanettes (iiii ?!) gets you a D.
Same here – and our year end is in September, so no extra IT headaches.
I’m using the last of my vacation days to take all of next week. And working from home Thursday and a half day Friday. So I’m almost there.
Poor Lady Humungus is suffering from a horrible cold that has given her a sexy 3-pack a day voice. And yesterday was also the year anniversary of her father’s death. Needless to say the Xmas spirit isn’t exactly brimming over at Chez Humungus – no Christmas tree, and, except for the laser light show I put up, no other decorations.
If you put up a tree and/or decorations you have to take them down. I don’t.
Likewise. I have 4 days left that I just scheduled.
In years past I have gone in to work between Christmas and New Years. Almost the entire professional office staff would be out.
Now they might have been logging in from home, but the near complete lack of emails and adhoc requests suggests if they did log in it was for show.
“This time of year, I can do that by going to work – they all leave.”
That was my plan too, but then i found out that i might loose some of my vacation if i don’t use it this next two weeks
Use it or lose it time for me is the end of the fiscal year – March 31st.
#metoo
It is not end of the fiscal year for my company just the date at which I must consume my remaining vacation although there is a little leeway and I can request for a later date as long as it is in the system by 31st
I end up taking most of December off too because a state law prohibits any employer from paying people (so pay for vacation AND work at same time) to work during their vacation time. Fuck the government asshats that think they did me a favor by forcing me to take time off.
The new place I’m working at is… different… for how they do vacation (as opposed to other places I work). You accrue it per paycheck starting when you’re eligible, and have a maximum accrual amount. And if you’re not on the operations side, you must take vacation time for the week between Christmas and New Year’s. My old places all gave you the full vacation amount at the beginning of the new year, and if you left the company you would either be charged or paid out for the remainder.
My place sounds like yours (accrue as you go) but then my co-workers were talking about use it or loose it. This is the end of my first full year here, so i’m not sure how that works, got to go talk to HR… Wish me luck.
DO NOT TALK TO HR. EVER.
^^^^This. x1,000,000
All my gigs at big companies that have vacation policies have been accrual type of places.
I was worried at my current job because I took a week off (and went negative) almost immediately after starting here. In my past, that has always been a red flag for bad employees. They have learned to a) use up that vacation early and b) no one ever really goes after them to repay that vacation.
In my case, I went to Japan for a wedding and it had been planned well in advance.
Did you tell them before they hired you that you had this commitment? I find that if you let a prospective employer know you have a commitment you quickly can ascertain that they will be OK or if they are anal about time off.
Before I accepted the offer for my current job, I made it very clear that I had two vacations that were already planned and paid for (April and July, I started in March). They had no issue with me taking the time, but that first vacation had a chunk of unpaid time in it (which was balanced out by the vacation pay out from the old company).
Yeah, I told them about that trip and another one that was already planned and they had no problems.
Like you said, it was probably a good test for sides. They knew I was at least organized enough to give them a heads up and I knew they weren’t going to be too gung ho about time.
Haven’t had a vacation in 25 years.
Fourscore, you have no one but yourself to blame for being as busy as a bee.
He should spend his golden years waxing philosophic.
We accrue as you go, but we don’t have a use it or lose it policy. There’s some people with nearly 200 hours of PTO because they never miss work or ask for time off.
I was getting that yearly at the old job (being at the same place for 10 years has its benefits), the new one has a maximum accrual that caps out at 252 hours if you’ve been here for more then 5 years.
Our vacation time is get full time at beginning of year and use it or lose it.
PTO is 60 hours on a rolling 1 year schedule, so if you use 8 hours on, say, Jan 8*, then you get it back on the next Jan 8.
*picked because that is what I did last year.
But if you take Feb 29th off, you don’t get that back until the next leap year.
“nearly 200 hours of PTO because they never miss work or ask for time off.”
They’ll get screwed out of that when they are fired or leave, I’m sure.
I have an accrued vacation time system too. I can only roll over 80 hours so I’ll be taking off all next week and New Year’s eve.
When I was a kid, my father would actually go to work on Xmas Eve! As a spastic kid who wanted to open presents that day, his actions were unfathomable. How could anyone have the self-control for that?
When I had a family of my own and worked at a startup, I learned the wisdom of working on Xmas Eve. My own kids were in the same frothy lather to open presents as I had been to open presents that day. I could have stayed home and listened to them whine constantly about opening just one present early or I could have gone to work.
Better yet, because we worked at a startup, there was no HR to get their grundies in a bunch because there was a bit of booze in the office. So the entire day was pretty much us hiding out from our families and having a few drinks at work. It wasn’t just us either. A lot of clients or other people who worked with us would drop by to shoot the shit and have a drink. Basically our office was Misogynist Central filled with shitlords who were hiding out from our wives and families.
I guess this is why the presents always appeared under the tree on Dec 24 after all kids were asleep. That’s the way I grew up and that’s the way my boys understand X-mas.
I’ve told this before, but the St. Paul paper used to have a column where readers would submit amusing stories about their lives.
One year at Xmas a reader told a story about his parents who would wrap empty boxes and put them under the tree. Then if the kids misbehaved, they’d say, “Well, that’s it. No present for you” and would take and empty box and toss it in their wood furnace.
I still laugh at that story.
Your parents missed a real opportunity to teach you some discipline Tejicano.
That’s brilliant!
My plant shuts down for 5 days around Christmas. All the production workers get a nice holiday while we members of the maintenance department work 24/7 doing as much as possible to improve the plant before it starts back up.
On the bright side, I get 2 1/2 times base rate pay on the 24th, 25th, and 26th.
Stop internalizing your working class oppression. You are being exploited. You need a nice sociology major to explain the errors of your way and the necessity of socialism. You can pay her with food, she needs it with that debt
I work at Fox Sports. So, this time of year is always busy.
Thankfully, I’ll be able to take Christmas week off. I’m anticipating time with the family lots of movie watching, reading, listening to good music, all the while enjoying good drink and food.
Hope all you Glibs get a chance to at least relax a bit and enjoy some holiday cheer!
Please don’t let a libertarian girl down, fail like I know you have it in you! – if you hate children why did you bring them into the world? Millions will die
Between the tax cuts and abolishing net neutrality, I thought everyone was already dead.
I got killed so badly I am now Undead. I still won’t vote blue.
Finally! Mourning Lynx!
Yay!
Too bad it took two decades of court fights for one slice of the patently unconsitutional weapons possession offense list to be struck down.
I assume simple nunchucks no more than two sticks and one chain
Yes, if they have a pistol grip, then they become “assault nunchucks”
OR if they are painted black and have a chrome plaited chain, cause those look scary.
You could take two of those police stick that have a perpendicular handle (do those have a name?) and make pistol grip nunchucks
They’re called nightsticks, they’re derived from the tonfa.
Yes I think this is right, billy clubs or batons can be used for a variety of lawful authority dispensing implements
Billy Clubs
Do not have the side handle.
Yeah, Nightstick is more accurate
Billy clubs or batons would be the name.

Don’t nunchucks have a thing that goes up pretty much by definition?
I thought it was a weird drinking game…like dwarf tossing, except it involves nuns
High capacity nunchucks still banned.
Is that determined by the links in the chain?
Nah, its the thing that flips up.
Just be sure to wear a cup when you practice with those things. *Experience is the best teacher*
Ask Tupac why they started calling him Onepack?
“Good news Michelangelo!. A federal judge ruled New York’s ban on nunchucks unconstitutional.”
Don’t they remember the great Chinatown massacre of 58? That’s the whole reason the law was put into place!
The deadly Mu Shu riots, too
I thought that was the Axe Gang?
The rate of self inflicted brain injuries is now expected to triple.
Or, as known by people who see them annually – winter.
Which is being delayed this year. 50 degrees on Friday, WTF?
Expect a Polar Express Monday night.
A top 10 list of corrupt Congress members without DWS?
Or Buck Schartzmore?
Good news Michelangelo!. A federal judge ruled New York’s ban on nunchucks unconstitutional.
Michelangelo was my favorite Ninja Turtle when I was a kid.
I liked the one with the forks
Raphael.
Nah, that’s Ruprect.
I thought the one with the forks was Shredder?
May I take your trident sir?
Way to out me, dude. I was night-lighting as a ninja turtle until now.
Cowabunga, dude.

Here’s the thing about nunchucks: how many people have hit themselves while “practicing” with them? All of them. How many of those have died? None of them. Seems like they must be pretty ineffective weapons.
Roger Stone spreading lies on Infowars? Why I never!
Sir Humphrey: Unfortunately, although the answer was indeed clear, simple, and straightforward, there is some difficulty in justifiably assigning to it the fourth of the epithets you applied to the statement, inasmuch as the precise correlation between the information you communicated and the facts, insofar as they can be determined and demonstrated, is such as to cause epistemological problems, of sufficient magnitude as to lay upon the logical and semantic resources of the English language a heavier burden than they can reasonably be expected to bear.
Hacker: Epistemological — what are you talking about?
Sir Humphrey: You told a lie.
Hacker: A lie?
Sir Humphrey: A lie.
Hacker: What do you mean, a lie?
Sir Humphrey: I mean you… lied.
As a rule, I don’t play multiplayer games. The one exception, MechWarrior Online, I don’t get involved in the ‘community’. So this entire comment is based on a sample size of one.
For whatever reason, I decided to start tackling the MWO advent challenges. These are really simple things like “deal 1700 points of energy weapon damage over any number of matches within the allotted time”. With that time frame being several days. It wasn’t until the energy weapon challenge that I even ended up swapping out from my standard builds. (I own a score of chassis, but only regularly use three or four.) The energy weapon challenge didn’t even cause a change of behaviour, amounting to playing much like my scout, only with more lasers.
The ballistic damage challenge was a bit different. I tend not to use ballistic weapons because the guns are heavy, the projectiles slow (and don’t track), and they’re ammunition dependant. I’d initially thought to just grind through the requirements in my Rifleman, which never gets out of the mechbay because it’s slow, it doesn’t hold a lot of ammo, and it heats up really fast. But during the lead up to the start of the window, I played around with loadouts on the available, little-used chassis.
The strategy game BattleTech taught me to disregard the Banshee, because it’s an assault weight chassis which never carried enough armor or enough guns to be worth bringing or worth fretting about if there were other opponents on the field. So the Banshee chassis I ended up with as part of a discount bundle got ignored (the mechs I wanted were cheaper with the additional dross). But it turned out the Banshee moved as fast as the Rifleman, could mount as many rotary autocannons, twice as many lasers, a backup Medium range missile rack, and jump jets while staying cooler than the Rifleman (and having more armor). If I viewed it as an assault mech, it was a poor choice. If I ran it like a heavy, it was compeditive.
So, I took the Banshee out for the ballistic challenge.
The first thing I found was that my normal sniping, LRM-lobbing playstyle got thrown out the window. I needed prolonged line of sight to keep the bullet hoses on the enemy mechs for as long as possible. So I began to run the Banshee like some kind of crazed berzerker. Mind you, it may have more armor than a heavy, but it’s thin-skinned for its weight class. So I ended up either getting hammered to scrap, or tearing through the enemy formation like a movie slasher through immoral teens. There was no in-between.
It felt utterly daft, yet half the time it worked.
I played the mobile version a few times. Now you are tempting me.
You can take my LRM Missile Boat away from me in BattleTech when you’ve scrapped the rest of my lance.
Challenge accepted!
*Flicks on battery of AMSs*
FREE RASELHAGUE!
Look at the rich merc with LosTech.
*Sensor Lock Engaged*
More seriously though, I’m usually the LRM boat with a few ER Medium lasers as backup weapons. (Unless I break out the Raven and go scouting. that only carries an LRM 5, two Mediums and a Large Laser)
I’ve found a Kintaro stripped of most of its armor, and loaded up with LRMs, ammo, and having a pilot with the second tier tactical advantage (moving in an earlier phase) is a great paper tiger. It can’t take a hit, but as long as it can stay behind mountains just lobbing missiles, it will dump a lot of damage (armor and stability) quickly.
Now you’re making me miss the Ablative Meat Shield.
Backstory – It’s the SLDF Highlander. On my first playthrough I didn’t realize her highness took less damage if she didn’t move, and had a frustrating time getting them out of the SLDF depot since I didn’t build either the mechs or the pilots. So I played to the objective of ‘her highness must survive’ and used the rest of the disposable lance to soak the fire. My response to the highlander pilots complaints about the damage was “Shut up, you’re an ablative meat shield”, so when that mech was the mission reward I named it “Ablative Meat Shield”. I then found out how fun it was to headshot Atlases with a Gauss rifle.
My strategy centered around being able to survive the abuse doled out by two lances in a row of enemy units. So I would tend to pile on the armor and LRMS, and focus on dismantling the most dangerous/squishy opponant first. ie, I’d shoot Jaegermechs and Catapults before Quickdraws or Orions because they went down faster and took out as much or more firepower from the other team. this mental threat matrix is where I picked up the habit of disregarding Banshees as not worth the ammo while there were other targets.
I’ve been playting GTA V – only in story mode. And, coming from the old GTA: Vice City days, I’m impressed by the size of the world. And all the different types of vehicles, and the strippers 😉
All I have to say is Trevor is a godsend. Have fun man, I blew so many friggin hours on that game.
I stopped GTA 5 when I’d made the characters a billion dollars, and exhausted the side missions. Admittedly, that took a while.
If you (or any glibs) want to roll together in GTA online, let me know or give me your steam name.
The heists can be a lot of fun and online in general can be a blast but i find its most fun to have a group to play with. I like to set some house rules like, no armored cars in missions, those take all the challenge & fun away.
Nuke that shit from orbit.
In the old tabletop version of Battletech that is pretty much exactly the role the standard Banshee played, a slightly undergunned but up armored Heavy Mech with excellent heat dissapation characteristics. You can think of it as kind of an Assault Scout mech (which makes sense given that Steiner was the main manufacturer of it) . Then of course Steiner decided that the Banshee was just too fast for them swapped out the engine for a lighter one dropping it to typical Assault Mech speed and used the extra weight to make it into one of the best Assault Mechs ever published in the game
I followed the link on the Flynn article. What crime did he commit? I forget.
If Mueller wasn’t holding a legal sword over Flynn’s head, I bet this would have turned out very differently.
He held perfectly legal conversations with a russian ambassador then misspoke when pressured by the FBI into an unrecorded interview.
” misspoke when pressured by the FBI into an unrecorded interview.”
Not just mispoke, when the FBI agent asked him a question he knew the answer to, and then was never given the chance to correct himself.
If the FBI quizzed me on everything I did last week, I would fail miserably and have to be their bitch for 2 years.
That is a feature built into our legal system so the people in power can do exactly what we are seeing going on right now with this sham to distract the voters from the fact that our government was weaponized by the corrupt Obama administration, used to spy on the political enemies of the democrats and to make up bullshit stories to let democrats that should be wearing orange jump suits get away with some real despicable criminal activity, amongst other things.
https://youtu.be/Jhs6TYBkx4s
It’s the only sensible thing to do.
“What crime did he commit? I forget.”
Opposing Obama’s Iran deal and working with Trump.
Talking with the FBI instead of asserting 5th Amendment right to not talk with govt employees.
Don’t answer questions from govt employees in law enforcement roles. Just don’t. It’s not hard to understand.
The thing is, though, in his job he dealt regularly with people from the FBI. He was tricked into thinking there was no active investigation into anything to do with him (there were news stories within a few days before the interview to that effect), and they came into his office giving no sign at all that this was an investigation interview.
Hate Speech on Patreon
https://patreonhq.com/hate-speech-on-patreon-a9026e52c2cf
The comments seems to be infested by alt-righter. But honestly the example given does not look like ehm… lets say problematic speech to me, and I am no fan of Sargon – the youtube star I mean, I like the original Sargon he had style.
“Hate speech includes serious attacks, or even negative generalizations, of people based on their race [and] sexual orientation.”
Lying POS.
Is the creator using racial slurs or negative depictions of a protected class? – what about an unprotected class?
I’d respect them saying “negative generalizations of a protected class”. It’d be wrong, but at least it would be in the open. They are trying to have their cake and eat it too. Fuck Conte.
or even negative generalizations, of people based on their race
I assume this applies to disparaging comments about white people as well. (stop laughing.)
Hey, remember when Sarah Jeong was given a pass because she was (supposedly) imitating the white supremacists who were attacking her on Twitter?
Damned unregistered trains from Indiana
I bet it gets counted toward the gun death tally.
When I heard this from my wife last night, my initial thought was that this was a setup. One or both of the cops were reporting criminal acts by another cop or group of cops. I thought that the killed cops would have been on the force certainly less than 5 years and maybe even less than 3. I also thought that there would never be a suspect caught, but eventually there would be rumors of eye witness reports of more police at the scene before the train killed these two.
A few years ago, a cop in the area was shot after reporting a couple of guys being suspicious or something. I don’t remember the details as it was all bullshit anyway. I told my wife immediately “He probably killed himself.” I attributed it more to incompetence than intentional suicide, but my wife thought I was the biggest asshole for even suggesting it. It turns out, he was stealing money from the city and the new city manager was on to him. He killed himself to try to get killed in the line of duty payments to his wife (who was helping him steal).
I think that was the guy in WI (Fox River) that had spent all the Youth money and offed himself to make it look like murder. Can’t remember all the details though
The Gliniewicz case? I had the same cynicism when that story broke. They even lined up three suspects who “matched the description” of the cop “shooters”. Last I heard, at least one had received a settlement from the village.
So we had Secret Santa today at work. In a strangely unliberarian move, I took part. Why do people gift stupid cups with santas painted on? At least a normal cup you could use…
Is there some sort of Taboo for librarians to take part of secret santa? Or Liberians?
you caught a typo go you…
Only if they’re mandatory.
I’m not even sure why they would be unlibertarian.
My wife drinks her morning tea out of a Santa cup every day of the year.
I also got some coffee from one of the better local roasters. Beans, I don’t go for the pre ground stuff. Did not no “Christmas blend” coffees existed.
40% Columbia Inza Cauca washed 1800 m altitude
40% Ethiopia Mormora natural 2000 m altitude
20% Kenya Komothay washed 1600 m altitude
So is it a “Christmas blend” because it represents the main factions of the Christian faith – Catholicism (Columbia), Orthodoxy (Ethiopia), and Protestantism (Kenya)? Or does it just “taste like Christmas”, whatever that means? Or is it just a cheap marketing trick rebranding regular coffee?
apparently it has aromas of chocolate and orange both things Romanians associate with Christmas
Anyone give someone else a dildo with a picture of santa on it?
A bill by then-Rep. Ron Desantis that would have named the congressmen who benefited from these payoffs in past years went nowhere
The bottom of the garbage can is “somewhere.”
Study: Women are abused every 30 seconds on Twitter
I’m abused by a woman every 30 days or so. You don’t hear me bitching.
And I bet it goes on for 5 or more days!
Twitter should be shut down for this atrocious behavior. Next thing you know, it’ll be The Handmaidens or some shiz.
What qualifies as ‘abuse’?
“Troll Patrol means we have the data to back up what women have long been telling us — that Twitter is a place where racism, misogyny and homophobia are allowed to flourish basically unchecked,” said Milena Marin, Senior Advisor for Tactical Research at Amnesty International.”
I’m sure you’re all fine women but can we have some explanation regarding methodology please?
I know where you live rufus I will come there and fuck you up you here. You ain’t heard the last of me you goddamn canadian (what is a good slur for canadian? I draw a blank)
Canadian is a slur.
Hoser? Maple Fucker? Ice Dick?
Leafs fan.
Hoser?
What is the difference between Hoosier and Hoser?
The first sells guns to people in Illinois, the other is a Canadian.
So, THAT’s where all the guns used in Chicago crime are coming from! Who’d thunk it?
Hoosier = Indiana basketball hick from the movie ‘Hoosiers’.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSftABlOixc
Hoser = Bob and Doug McKenzie….
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssCZWBtwUTI
Not sure if maligning my ‘home’ state, or a Romanian who I in no way expect to know the difference.
Hoosier–Person from Indiana.
Hoser–Dumb Canadian
…there isn’t much of a difference outside of passport, I’m afraid.
I can google but wanted to see the most entertaining explanation of the difference glibs can give me
Some years back, when Northwestern was beating the Indiana Hoosiers in basketball, the Northwestern fans were chanting “Hoosier daddy!” Indiana coach Bobby Knight complained to the press that this was racist, because some of the black Indiana players were the product of single mothers.
I heard “snow Mexican” at work last night.
I think hoser refers to the guys who fill ice rinks with water to be frozen (did not Google, ymmv), which is kind of an unusual insult.
No one really knows the source. Another one is how in the Prairies people would use hoses to steal and siphon gas from cars. Hence, ‘hosers’.
“Iceback”
“the Oxford English Dictionary entry for “hoser” cites the first written example as a 1981 article in the Toronto Star about the McKenzie characters, in which Moranis said “a hoser is what you call your brother when your folks won’t let you swear.” Beyond this, the etymology of the word is hard to trace, with informal origins coming from different folk traditions and Canadian history.
The most prominent unofficial derivation comes from every Canadian’s favorite pastime—pond hockey. Whenever groups would get together to play some shinny (another Canadian slang term, for an informal pick-up hockey game) on the local pond, the losing team would have to hose down the ice with water afterwards to make the playing surface smooth again. In this version of hoser’s etymology, “hose” and “loser” were contracted to make “hoser,” giving it a colloquially negative connotation tied to the Canadian national game.
From this article.
You know…..this country is about more than just hockey.
Curling for example.
And poutine and passive aggression. Can’t forget them.
And dreamy politicians.
donuts and beer!
For reasons I will never understand Curling is somehow a popular sport here in Maryland. Nearly every ice rink I have been to has a dedicated curling section.
Don’t forget to mention strippers, Rufus… Canadian strippers are serious high quality damaged girls with daddy issues.. YUM!
Every credible study shoes men are abused the same or more than women, for loose definitions of abuse that is. The only difference is women declare to be bothered by it.
shows goddamnit
These women want it both ways…
They want to play the victim when convenient and they want to be treated as if they are though.
hmmm seems low.
2*60*24*365 = 1,051,200 30-second periods in the year.
~200,000,000,000 tweets per year
This (at a minimum) would account for 0.0005% of all tweeting. Having jumped on twitter i know that the percentage of “abuse” that their is on twitter is much higher. Since they claim that it is every 30 seconds and not more often I must conclude that all the other vitriol is toward men or organizations.
Twitter is supposedly investing heavily in machine learning that will guard against abusive tweets, but as noted by the Financial Times, the platform remains guarded about the way its algorithms are trained and how abuse reports are handled.
Explain this to me. Fine if you want to ban certain words. Why can’t they explain the way they come to the conclusion that something is abusive? It leads one to think that may they just want to be able to boot people who engage in wrongthink. Nah…
And you know that 95% jump to the conclusion that these women were “abused” by men when in my experience bitchy behavior is exhibited by bitches.
That study sure seems to assume a lot of peoples’ gender.
A more complete link of corrupt members of Congress.
We need to have a jaunty hat contest. Frederica Wilson should not just win unopposed.
Fucking shitlord. Jaunty?
How bout Minnesoda bringing the fucking woke to Congress vis-a-vis hats?
Yeah, but it’s not jaunty.
I think that was my point. Why should jaunty be the metric that we use to define winners and losers? When so much oppression is abroad in the land, I think we ought to be thinking how we can be more woke in every aspect of our lives.
See, that’s why people don’t like you. “Jaunty” just isn’t in your emotional vocabulary.
You know that “jaunty” doesn’t mean “something my jewish aunt would wear” right?
And my emotional vocabulary (or deficiencies thereof) is not even a patch on the other reasons people don’t like me.
I can only say, “Be careful what you wish for, little girl” What next? Everyone/anyone can wear any hat they want? 1st Amendment, Baby. If elected I promise to wear my tinfoil hat, the dressy one.
MAGA hat ftw!
You beat me to it your holiness.
The proggie millennial asshat that keeps on giving
“For working people, immigrants, & the poor, self-care is political — not because we want it to be, but bc of the inevitable shaming of someone doing a face mask while financially stressed. So I’ve decided to take others along with me on IG as I learn what self-care even means and why it’s important.”
/face palm.
Looks straight into the face of person who voted for her.
I cant make heads or tails of that. I am fairly certain that woman is not sane.
That sort of thing would get you twitter banned Suthen. You should never point out women are not sane.
I think he meant that she was Fucking Goofy. Totes different.
Why are we taking about Minnie Mouse and the reason MIckey divorced her ass?
She’s making a word salad of terms that people who voted for her want to hear. It doesn’t have to make sense. She prolly can’t make it make sense.
I hope this is as far as she ever goes in her political career.
She will end up running for the top job is my guess.
If the claim Trump is an ignorant illiterate and this drives the left mad, how can they square that with if she runs? Her ignorance is breathtaking. Another level of astonishment.
*If* a society is enlightened, it *should* be able to weed such personalities out.
It’s sexism and/or racism if we doubt her “intellect”.
“Enlightened” is a subjective measure based upon one’s current values. It is nothing more than temporal snobbery towards your forebearers and cultural cheauvanism towards foreigners*.
*except that there are some groups that really do range from pig ignorant to outright evil.
How about ‘reading comprehension level’ above back of cereal boxes?
Better?
Only if those coral boxes are peddling marxist tripe?
So she “likes to take care of herself” before a big day at work. Nothing wrong with that.
I would think she could get a face mask for free, IYKWIMAITYD.
Actually I don’t. Is it another term for mustache ride?
Its like you’ve never seen pornography.
The Bronx-bred democratic socialist heading into her freshman term in the House of Representatives announced Monday she’s taking some time off to take care of herself before she officially starts her new job
So she’s going to take a crash course in American Government?
“For working people, immigrants, & the poor, self-care is political — not because we want it to be, but bc of the inevitable shaming of someone doing a face mask while financially stressed. So I’ve decided to take others along with me on IG as I learn what self-care even means and why it’s important.”
Oh…
FFS. She doesn’t know a life that isn’t filled with tweeting every stupid brain-fart that comes into her head. Doesn’t she have minions yet to tell her to shut her trap once in a while?
A mani-pedi can do a girl a power of good. Wonder if she checks the Vietnamese migrant lady is being paid more than minimum wage
Maybe she could resurrect that nail-salon controversy and pretend it wasn’t a total fraud made up by the NYT.
She’s taking time off from a job she hasn’t started yet.
Maybe she’s just a performance artist trolling all of us.
Seven days of class left til my “vacation,” which will be a mix of nomadic homelessness, last-chance trips to see things I haven’t seen yet, and online work and work-hunting.
Thankfully I live in a shoebox, because I am going to have to pack up my meager amount of shit by December 31. The packing process for this bullshit is going to be a complete slash-and-burn offensive tossing everything in the
dumpsterstreet corner where trash is put to be picked up.There will be wallpaper damage that is gonna be subtracted from my bonus. Hopefully I can take care of most of it this weekend. It’s going to be fucking brutal, as in the Battle of Cannae brutal. I’m throwing everything to the curb.
Ain’t worth my time to sell and ain’t I don’t give a damn about my bad reputation.
Damn dude, well good luck with the move and hang in there, man.
Oh, I’m incredibly excited. Friend of mine is also leaving soon and only works 3 days a week now, so we’ll have lots of opportunities to explore around. I’ve got a going-away show on Jan 19th and I’m just gonna play with lots of people that I’ve performed with over the years. Probably fly back (THE DIRECT FLIGHT FROM INCHEON TO CHICAGO HAS RETURNED!!!!) . the 25th or so. Then lots of nephew and work time. Probably April 1 journey to Chiang Mai. Auspicious date for me.
I had my two worst classes of the week this afternoon, but with Xmas next week I don’t ever have to see them again. Fucking. Monsters.
Eyyy, sounds great minus the nightmare classes, but sounds like you got quite a bunch to keep you busy and moving the next couple months. Enjoy the time with the nephews, I can’t wait to see mine again next year too.
There will be wallpaper damage that is gonna be subtracted from my bonus.
Dude, just wait until you can buy proper rolling papers next time.
Not sure about Korea, but double check the lease. A lot of the stuff they try to hose you for is actually normal damage for occupying the apartment. They think you either a) don’t know the law or b) won’t bother fighting it anyways. Give pushback at least and find out what the standard is. One apartment here tried that shit with me and my company tore the rental company a new asshole.
I don’t have a lease. Apartment is owned and provided for by my employer as an off-the-books (for me at least) perk. I could get $400/month to do something on my own, but the proximity to the school was too valuable to get involved in rent agreements in Korean.
Not rental related, but my wife’s employer tried to pull that shit with her. First thing they told her yesterday at the office was that they had no liability whatsoever for her fall on the ice. Any issues she has with lost pay or injury can be taken up with the place they lease from.
That made me pretty fucking angry. I sent my wife an email to send to the owner (from her) that contained the federal statute holding them responsible for her lost wages for medical care. It ended with a reminder that our lawyer can be in touch if needed, and they should be thankful an afternoon of lost wages is all they’re on the hook for. It could have been much worse due to their negligence.
They practically fell over themselves racing to reassure her that she would be paid with no issue. We wouldn’t have said anything except their lack of responsibility for an employee was appalling and my wife is critical to their business so there would be no consequences. I knew they had no idea about the statute. They have some jackass 25-year-old running their HR department who has no idea what he’s doing.
Good for you. You have to forcefully call them on it when they try to wriggle out of obligations. As for Evan, even if it’s the school’s apartment, push back on them if they try to charge you a couple hundred bucks for a snag in the wall paper.
When did she fall? The “commute” to and from work or “lunch hour”?
There is all kinds of games you can play here, but a sane employer would absolutely take the Workers’ Comp claim. Your wife’s employer seem to be an idiot here.
OTH, WC is no fault – so many people actually want a General Liability claim with the landlord – that get you to the pain and suffering jackpot.
Since this is Glibertarians – I’ll remain silent if “lack of consortium” is a plus or minus for your wife! 😉
The entrance to their building was iced over. In addition to my pregnant wife, several elderly patients slipped and fell. The 25 year old HR shit claimed the entrance way is the responsibility of the property they lease from and told my wife, before anything had been said by us, that she wouldn’t see shit from them.
Her employer only gives 2 weeks off of combined sick/vacation time each year. All we wanted was for them to pay the remainder of her shift while she had an emergency visit to the doctor. HR guy told my wife to fuck off. The owner stepped in quick once we provided them with the statute number and threat of legal intervention.
The problem was that they actually directed my wife to walk onto the ice using caution tape. Absolute negligence on their part. They got very lucky with her and the elderly patients.

I’m trying to think of teachers who “looked like me” that I had in my public school days and am failing to think of any. I dunno, it just seemed less important to me than the question of whether they could actually teach.
Exactly, I only cared about the teachers who actually put an effort and cared about their students (aka also me).
That was usually ‘no’. But you may have gone to a school not filled with apathetic union members waiting out their retirement date.
I had one or two pretty decent teachers. One or two.
Maybe one.
The whole thing about needing teachers who “look like me” is a stupid argument. Logically it would require us to segregate schools wouldn’t it? If black kids can only learn from black teachers, then white kids must only be able to learn from white teachers.
If you are running a school with mixed populations, how can you hire the right mix of teachers? Logically, it makes sense to have all black, all white, all indian, all asian (and those bastards can tell who is who, so probably Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Laotian, Hmong, Vietnamese) schools. That way you can make sure all the students learn by having teachers who look like them.
It’s depressing how much these assholes want to bring back segregation. I’m sure they would’ve also loved everything about Plessy vs. Ferguson.
I’m not sure I even believe that anymore. While this might put me in the same camp as some really kooky people, if you listen to their rhetoric and read some of the dumber twats and public statements, they won’t rest until white people vacate leadership and and over power lock-stock and barrel. Because having a disenfranchised, pissed off majority always works out well.
/not that it matters because these people are still very much the useful idiots of the rich white liberal class
The whole thing about needing teachers who “look like me” is a stupid argument. Logically it would require us to segregate schools wouldn’t it? If black kids can only learn from black teachers, then white kids must only be able to learn from white teachers.
I only had two teachers who were worth a damn throughout high school. One was an elderly black lady who taught chemistry. The second was a middle woman teaching anatomy/physiology who looked like a stereotypical lesbian gym teacher.
When I was in between jobs, I tried substitute teaching at some schools in the ghetto. Oh man, that shit was an eye opener. I thought my school was rough, but that fucking Candyland compared to these places. As we were waiting for assignments in the lobby, this older black dude sub just looked over at me and laughed and laughed.
Turns out the kids didn’t like white people very much. The actual teacher in the classroom next to mine was a large white dude. Probably 6’2”, 300 lbs. I still remember him telling some kids to tuck their shirt tails in and hearing the immediate “Shut Up You White Nigger” response thrown right back. I also remember going through the roll and coming up on a girl named Ashley(made up first name) Blow. The class erupted in “Ashley likes to suck dick”. “Yea, get them blow jobs Ashley!” Then another student came up and told me that another kid said “Mr. SSD, Mr. SSD. *points* He said he was going to come to your home and kill your whole family Mr. SSD” “No, I didn’t” “Yes, he did Mr. SSD, I heard em!”
This was middle school. High school was much easier. Security just told me to let the kids do whatever they wanted. If not, they really would come to their houses and kill their families.
The whole thing about needing teachers who “look like me” is a stupid argument.
It is stupid on the whole, but I can’t say it is entirely without merit. When I, a white male, taught at a small school in which white males were a minority in both faculty and students, I did notice that in my one class with white males (2 of 20) that they did go out of their way to interact with me more than any of the other students in that class (middle schoolers, it should be noted). But of course that is a small sample size – the students most likely to stop by my classroom outside of class hours were non-white males (from a different class of middle schoolers). The overarching pattern I noticed among all my students at that school was not racial preference but gender preference – the boys were far more eager to interact with a male teacher than the girls were (except in my high school class, but as I was in my early 20s there may have been a confounding variable there).
Yeah imagine this poor white boy – his favorite teacher in high school was a woman. And in college a Middle Eastern history prof, a Eastern European math teacher, and a jock-ish math teacher who made Calc interesting.
The poor “Jock” teacher had to take an early retirement because he kicked a black student out of his class (for not paying attention). And then his class was constantly disrupted with sit-downs and groups of black students showing up to disrupt his class. Early-SJW days, eh?
One of my better professors was Middle Eastern. He was also the ASME club advisor. Being as he was Muslim, he didn’t drink, which meant he was the designated driver on club outings
Gov.-elect Tim Walz’s plan to increase teacher salary and provide loan forgiveness for educators of color is a start.
That’d be great way to increase the diversity of hatred in the teacher’s room.
There’s no way this will cause or increase any animosity between the workers. Not at all.
educator of color
I thought “colored educator” would be considered derogatory.
Educator of color is an art teacher, no?
You just know she starts every fucking sentence with “As an educator of color . . . .”
I have yet to hear that said in a work setting, but if anyone starts that shit with me in the room, I’m likely to cut them off and tell them nobody gives a fuck what color they are.
Police Release Texts Revealing How Teacher Allegedly Lured 13-Year-Old Student Into Sex

“hey you want to have sex?”
After looking at her pictures, she lured him by offering it to him? They doesn’t seem tricky. She seems above average for the 27 year old teacher sleeping with her students.

Not guilty.

“According to reports, court documents claim her husband called the boy’s family not to go to the police and that she had just made a mistake, but ‘she loved the kids’. It is claimed that he ‘harassed’ the parents and asked to meet the boy’s father but they refused to.”
Cucked by a pedo. Willingly.

Titanic: The untold story
lol, Bulshit.
Judah Cohen of the Atmospheric and Environmental Research told the paper his climate models indicate a vortex is likely to hit in late December or early January. A polar vortex disruption occurs when the stratosphere – where most weather occurs – suddenly warms, causing winds to change decrease or change direction. The vortex will then be displaced and split apart, spilling cold air into the mid-latitudes.
Global Warming causes colder winters?

Sigh… See i thought you’d be against war because of all the loss of Human Life…
She probably unironically sports a “bombing for peace is like fucking for virginity” bumper sticker too.
“How dare we bring anyone so small and helpless into our dangerous situation?”
So does she mean “because if a woman would abort her child, the child is better off not having her for a mom”?
I’m sorry, there I go trying to make sense of something senseless.
“Never” is a strong word. I’m going to guess you voted Quisling.
^This^
A better philosophy than “Peace at any price” is the one articulated by Patrick Henry:
Don’t know where I saw it, but somebody once said “If you have nothing you are willing to die for, you have nothing to live for” or words to that effect.
“Why War is Never a Good Idea” is a stupid theme even for a kid’s book. You could kick me in the balls and I could still shout out 3 or 4 reasons why it would be a good idea in some cases.
Yeah, I wouldn’t worry about feeling morally inferior to anyone who advocates Abortion, for the precise reason that we shouldn’t bring children into “this hell hole”. There is so much wrong with that. A) you are admitting that these are people and that this amounts to murder to “put them out of their misery. B) if that’s how you feel about the world, then why are you still alive? Go Euthanize yourself so the rest of humanity doesn’t have to be poisoned by your retarded ideology.
So I guess waging war against some asshole(s) who wants to oppress and kill you, your family, and everything you love is also a bad idea?
That is of course, unless it’s war against the Jews.

It’s all so fucking tiresome.
Liquidity Is Falling Like a Rock
This is important because hedge funds provide liquidity to the markets. When liquidity goes down, credit usually tightens with it, when credit tightens, the market shrinks.
Additionally, there was not a single junk bond offering in November. There were no buyers.
Does credit “tighten” or is it just the price of credit going up?
Not really any difference.
Most of corporate America can’t afford an increase in credit prices. So as soon as the price goes up, lending dries up. The corporate bond market is $7.5T, of which only $2.5T is high-grade.

How are the asshats telling us only agents of the state should be able to have firearms going to make this revelation by the courts go away? If the cops have no obligation to protect the unarmed people they herd into these gun free zones, and thoe people have no right to protect themselves, are we saying slaughterhouses are cool (or schools in this case).
As long as the officers get home safe, yes
You can die smiling, knowing that you gave your life to keep that gunzone free of guns.
Make no mistake, these fuckers want their boot on your neck. That is all gun control is about.
I think everyone here gets that Suthen. I wonder how many of the people that want to deny us our rights actually know exactly what that means and yet are still all for it because they like the idea of others getting the boot (and think it never will happen to them for some insane reason).
I think it appeals to them because when the unintended consequences show up in the wake of these policies it just gives them more reasons to restrict freedom further. Whether it’s a goal or a bi-product the end state is a pacified populace al a Brave New World ruled by the police state of 1984.
Leftists get to pretend to be anti-war when a Republican is in the White House and they get to ignore its existence when a Democrat is in the White House.
If they had the foresight of “me today, you tomorrow” they wouldn’t be gun-grabbing, tyrant-enabling dumbasses.
“Gun control” – “gun” is the modifier. “Control” is the operative noun.
It’s all about control. Guns are just the entry point.
The case against billionaire philanthropy
A philosopher explains how megadonors can undermine democracy.
https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2018/12/17/18141181/foundation-charity-deduction-democracy-rob-reich
Rob Reich, a political theorist at Stanford (and no relation to the former labor secretary), begins his new book Just Giving: Why Philanthropy Is Failing Democracy and How It Can Do Better with the story of the Rockefeller Foundation’s founding, and argues that the skeptics have a point: Foundations, and large-scale charitable giving more generally, pose a real challenge to democratic institutions and norms. He contends that we ought to be less deferential and more critical and skeptical of billionaires giving away their fortunes.
Big philanthropy — more than ordinary small donations that most people make — is an exercise of power. It’s an attempt to direct your private assets for some public influence, often with a naked aspiration to change public policy. And in a democratic setting, wherever power is exerted, it deserves our scrutiny, in order to understand whether it’s serving democratic purposes or undermining them. And philanthropy shouldn’t be exempt from that examination.
The only reasonable solution is for the government to seize those assets and distribute them as they see fit.
Everything people do privately that i want done by government undermines democracy
After watching They Shall Not Grow Old yesterday, I decided that if I were a billionaire, I would pay for a team to restore old footage like the WWI film and put it into the public domain.
Holy shi-ite, that was an amazing movie.
I am very, very disappointed that I was unable to go, and not sure I’ll be able to make the 27th either. I wish it wasn’t such a limited release – why aren’t there more dates?
It’s just not that into you.
I’m kinda peeved. The only showings here are 3D. Blecch.
I watched it in 3D too (seemed they all were in that).
Yeah, I wasn’t a fan, but it wasn’t too distracting.
“It’s an attempt to direct your private assets for some public influence, often with a naked aspiration to change public policy.”
It’s only okay when we do it.

Democracy! The State is us!
God. Fuck democracy.
It’s an attempt to direct your private assets for some public influence, often with a naked aspiration to change public policy.
And?

I take this to mean “does it do things I want or things I don’t want”.
Everything within the State. Nothing outside the State.
Do you know what grinds my gears? People who can’t decide how fast they want to drive down the highway. Set your goddamned cruise control.
Do you know what else grinds my gears? James fucking Comey and his holier than thou shtick.
“So another day of Hillary Clinton’s emails and the Steele dossier,” Comey said. “This while the President of the United States is lying about the FBI, attacking the FBI and attacking the rule of law in this country. How does that make any sense at all?”
“Republicans used to understand that the actions of a president matter, the words of a president matter, the rule of law matters, and the truth matters,” Comey continued. “Where are those Republicans today?”
“At some point, someone has to stand up and in the face of fear of Fox News, fear of their base, fear of mean tweets,” Comey said before taking questions. “Stand up for the values of this country and not slink away into retirement but stand up and speak the truth.”
“This is not about Republicans and Democrats, this is about ‘what does it mean to be an American?'” Comey declared. “What are the things that we care about? Above our policy disputes, which are important, there’s a set of values that represent the glue of this country and they are under attack … ”
“We have to stop being numb to it, whether you’re a Republican or Democrat, you need to stand on your feet, overcome your shame and say something,” Comey whined, later adding: “People who know better, including Republican members of this body, have to have the courage to stand up and speak the truth, not be cowed by mean tweets or fear of their base. There is a truth and they’re not telling it. Their silence is shameful.”
Comey/Avenatti 2020
What “American” values has that prick ever supported or upheld in his years of “loyal service” for the government?
Above our policy disputes, which are important, there’s a set of values that represent the glue of this country and they are under attack
“Get fucked you miserable peasants” is not actually a set of values that represent the glue of this country you smarmy little impotent brainlet
People who can’t decide how fast they want to drive down the highway.
Invariably, they’re on their phone.
Point 1. I don’t have cruise control, get off my ass.
Point 2. I’m suprised that the left didn’t sustain any brain damage with how fast the whiped back and forth between “Comey the greatest” to “Comey the destroyer of democracy” to “Comey the Martyr”. The guy is obviously slime, who just looks out for his own good. And i’m sorry but having the Fucking Secretary of State hosting an unsecured private server to skirt transparency laws (at the best), is way worse than having the President say mean things about your beloved organization. If you ever need to prove there is a Deep State, just point out that Comey worries more about the dignity of his fucking Agency, than he does about actually enforcing the law.
Do you know what grinds my gears? People who can’t decide how fast they want to drive down the highway. Set your goddamned cruise control. – many don’t have cruise control and it is sometimes difficult to maintain exact speed without it, depending on the road
There is an axiom for gaming that applies here. Ahem – “Git gud skrub”.

That style of driving seriously makes me nuts. Also, those who are clearly accelerating but their brake lights are on.
Blah blah blah no reasonable prosecutor. Yeah, whatever. Now fuck off Jimmy, you lying sack of shit.
Do you know what grinds my gears? People who can’t decide how fast they want to drive down the highway. Set your goddamned cruise control.
I have adaptive cruise control. I set my max speed and following distance. My car then automatically adjusts based on those parameters to the car in front of me. If I change to an open lane, it then automatically accelerates to my set max speed and holds the car there.
Sounds like something a fag would have.
It’s my preference to an autonomous system. And nice on longer car trips.

“Fear of their base”….iow, the people who elected them to represent their beliefs. Fuck those people, amirite?
Asshole has the nerve to puff up about the rule of law – if you gave a shit about the rule of law, Hillary Clinton would have been indicted.
No, Hillary Clinton would be making license plates while wearing an orange jump suit. So would be a slew of other people she would rat on to protect her own mangy hide, including Obama.
So another day of
Hillary Clinton’s emails and the Steele dossiermassive FBI, DOJ, and intelligence community corruption and lawbreaking.Every time that vile human being opens his yap, my opinion of him somehow goes even lower.
there’s a set of values that represent the glue of this country and they are under attack
Yeah, those values include things like due process, telling the truth, etc. They are indeed under attack, by you and your scum friends.

“Coward” implies that they were too afraid to do the right thing. They’re aren’t cowards if you go by that.
unprincipled opportunistic hacks sound better?
Exactamundo. Gotta get me elected one way or another. Who cares what I promised? I just need a scapegoat for why I couldn’t do fulfill my promises.
I actually heard one of these cunts that voted not to kill Obamacare when it came up after years and years of promising to do just that to get reelected, claim that the voters had been unfair to them because they were playing the long game – and supposedly counting on the recent outcome where dropping the tax made the courts do the heavy lifting – as if that was a genius move. Someone should tell these asshats that they were elected to legislate and not to pass the baton to someone else to avoid the voters punishing them at the ballot box, which is how the whole US system of government intended for things to work.
They should be sued for fraud.

I sometimes wonder if these proggie asshats simply want to prove people that point out how crazy they are right on purpose, or that they just can’t help it. Not sure how many people took time to read Chad Greene’s article about how he gets more grief about being a conservative than he gets about being gay, but it was some seriously interesting stuff that clearly showed that there really was some serious hate on the left. Queue the usual leftist morons to make the case for him by attacking him for daring to calling that hate filled left’s usual behavior out.
What the fuck are they talking about? There is a stigma about being gay? The only stigma I see anymore is people just dont care.

in the event that a higher intelligence should visit this planetas a cautionary tale about the depravity of ancient man (since procreation will still be carried out by the hyper-religious, it is their descendants that will inherit the earth in this timeline).Women, for the first time, got the pay they deserved. – 60% of what men got?
Uffda. That was as delusional a piece of writing as I have ever seen.
I love the whole subtext that men are stupid violent brutes and this new technology will allow us smart women to relegate them to the dustbin of history. Like all the other lies that they tell themselves, if men really were that dumb and violent, what is going to keep them from smashing your cyborg and raping you? Who exactly is going to arrest him? Some other violent brutish man?
I’m sure the author would have to retire to her fainting couch if you pointed out to her that the only technology that is going to realistically protect her from violent brutes is a firearm.
I am guessing Cathy cant get laid.
My first thought, too.
What does this mean? How are cyborgs giving women blowjobs (or denying them?)??????
Also, at what point do colleges get Robot Studies department where the robots that have to clean the cum out of self driving cars rail on and on about the undeserved privilege of sex robots? Doesn’t seem fair that robots are pigeonholed into the roles for which they are built. What if a robot identifies as DC powered, even when it clearly has a power cord that is meant (by its designer) to be plugged into an AC outlet?
We already have prosthetics and a ubiquitous, never-ending cornucopia of pornography. What do sex robots bring to the table, other than a creepy and more difficult to maintain and keep tucked away reminder of our sexual and social inadequacies? The wannabe sexual revolutionaries sound even more loony than the self-driving car partisans. Hey, remember when futurists were nerdy but harmless weirdos who talked about the singularity as a looming promise, and had their heads frozen when they died? Now we’ve got lunatics who look upon the works of Boston Dynamics and think, Yeah, I want that in me.
The fantasy of the sexbot is not what we can field now, but a perfectly lifelike simulacrum of a person who is always beautiful as per your personal preference, and always faithfully out to please its owner.
And that’s a fine fantasy if you’re into that sort of thing, but the way feminists like Cathy O’Neil (and many MGTOWs, I imagine) describe it, we’re verging on a second sexual revolution due to full-body prosthetics. I just don’t see it, not only for the state of the tech, but because we’re already awash in alternatives to conventional sex. If anything, the renaissance will come in the form of renewed interest in human relationships, as we realize tech will never fill certain holes. It’s one thing to be fooled by the Turing box, but when you know it’s a Turing box and will never be other than a Turing box, you haven’t really replaced having a spouse, you’ve just got a dildo mounted on your Alexa device. (And that’s assuming some heavy lifting on the AI front.)
To be clear, I don’t doubt that such things will eventually (inevitably) be made available. I bet they’ll even be popular. But I don’t see any fundamental restructuring of human life as a result.
But I don’t see any fundamental restructuring of human life as a result.
Horny, dumb young men might get themselves into less trouble that follows them into adulthood. Maybe.

Allow six-year-olds to vote? No, but it’s not as crazy as it sounds
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/dec/17/six-year-olds-vote-children-progressive-idealistic
Now this is ment, I will give the benefit of the doubt, as a semi joke but
Having said that, children do tend towards the progressive, having a natural sense of justice (which kicks in at the age of six months, psychologists have shown, by simulating scenes of great unfairness to babies, and making them cry) and an underdeveloped sense of self-interest. My kid, when he was six, made quite a trenchant case against private property, on the basis that, since everybody needed a house, they shouldn’t cost money, because nobody would want anyone else not to have one. Also, food should be free. It was a kind of pre-Marx communism, where you limit the coverage of the market to only those things that you wouldn’t mind someone else not having.
This should tell you something about your politics if it is the result of thinking like a 6 year old.
This is purely about slanting the political landscape to generate a desired outcome. Kids are more susceptible to influence, which is why they want them to be able to vote.
My 6 year old was disappointed when he asked for a mini gun and I told him those were illegal and we couldn’t get one. He also doesn’t want to wear his seat belt.
#notall6yearoldsarecommies
Untrue! Miniguns are Not illegal, You just need the NFA stamp and at least $500,000 to convince one of the current owners to sell theirs.
And another 1M to keep it in ammo.
Yeah. 6000 rounds per minute. Cheap .308 is around 40 cents a round.
We are looking at about 2400 dollars per minute of use.
That’s a bit pricey for me.
The kid is only six. I dont think he would have really grasped the finer details of the 1934 NFA and the 1986 Hughes amendment had I tried to explain it to him.
However, you are technically correct.
In a few years use it as an example of how brazenly unconstitutional laws can fester on the books for decades.
Also, try taking a toy away from a 6 year old and you will find that most of them have a highly developed penchant for property rights.
It is sort of like the old commie joke
If you have two houses would you give one to your comrade?
Yes
If you have two goats would you give one to your comrade?
No
Why not?
I actually have two goats
Their concept of property rights is what’s mine is mine and what’s yours is mine. So, yeah, they’re socialists.
Hmm sounds a lot like “Liquidating the Electorate, and establishing a new One”…
So they’re claiming that the PC Babies from South Park are a good thing?
Having said that, children do tend towards the progressive, having a natural sense of justice (which kicks in at the age of six months, psychologists have shown, by simulating scenes of great unfairness to babies, and making them cry) and an underdeveloped sense of self-interest.
I don’t have kids, but I’ve never met one who had an underdeveloped sense of self-interest. And from what I can tell, their sense of justice is basically “Getting what I want is justice. Not getting what I want is injustice.” Only they use the words “fair” and “unfair”.
Your kid wants a minigun? How about this?
That’s badass. I really might buy that.
Gotta love the tacit admission that the proggie mind is basically that of a child, unthinking and malleable.
Can’t be any worse than the top 40 pablum the industry normally churns out.
The other day, during a football game, they ran an ad for the grammys. You couoldn’t get me to watch/listen to that crap at gunpoint.
I mean, I know pop music is supposed to be formulaic and accessible, but I still swear it’s gotten worse even since I was a kid.
Somewhere in the 90’s I lost interest. Occasionally, something comes out that is catchy, but most of it is pure crap.
I mean I don’t exactly listen to the most high brow fare, but it seems like chord variety and lyricism has gotten simpler.

If only 8 year old got the vote… Well actually some may have voted for Trump
He’d clean up with the offer of free hats. I remember during the Iowa caucuses he was also giving free helicopter rides at a fair. A lot of 8-year-olds would vote for that.
Victoria Woodhull was a stockbroker and free love advocate, and Frederick Douglass was of course Frederick “freedom depends upon the ballot box, jury box, and cartridge box” Douglass. That’s a ticket any right-minded person could get behind
The first woman to receive an EC vote was Libertarian VP candidate Theodora Nathan, in 1972.
Heh, I know this one – cast by Roger McBride who was a faithless voter or whatever you call a member of the EC who doesn’t vote for the party he’s affiliated with.
Yep, and it earned him the 1976 LP Prez nomination.
Oh, so Hillary injected herself into this girl’s life as a means of keeping her own name in the headlines? I’m absolutely floored by that revelation.
What? You think Clinton’s handlers focus-tested that letter and refined it for maximum impact?
Such a cynic you are.
Have we confirmed it was really from Hillary? And it wasn’t Bill posing as her and trying to groom the next generation of interns?
Do you know what grinds my gears? People who can’t decide how fast they want to drive down the highway. Set your goddamned cruise control.
How am I supposed to hack and chop my way through traffic? You want steady speed? Next time, take the train.
I don’t normally look to Europe for answers but the Autobahn…
Traffic? Two mule deer and a cow does not traffic make, Brooksie.
When you are driving through open range and the cows can stand right in the road, they do in fact constitute “traffic”.
I’d rather face a pissed off suburban commuter after an accident than a rancher who owned the cow I just ran over. The rancher is far more likely to own a rifle and farm more likely to be acquitted by a jury of his
peersneighbors. Also a cow will do far more damage to your car than a Prius will.
Traffic is moving at comperable speeds to you. Unless you drive at a cow’s amble, they’re an obstacle.
I nearly hit two women in a toy car last wed. They were lucky it was me. I could see it coming a mile away. I knew they were going to run through the intersection. Most people are not as attentive when driving. I dont know what model car they were driving but it was barely bigger than a shoe box. They would have been killed for certain and trapped in that tiny shitbox. Why bother cutting them out? Just bury the car.
Why bother cutting them out?
So you can cut out the good parts and bring them home.
– Ed Gein
My Dad had a car totaled by a mule. The mule was totaled too.
My wife had an uncle killed when he hit a horse. He was driving a convertible with the top down. Yikes.
That hitchiker nagged him to death.
I worked with a guy who ran his geo metro into a cow. The geo lost. Badly.
The only cows in the country that no one will claim ownership of are the ones that have been hit by vehicles on a public road.
About 20 years ago, some young dude drove a motorcycle into the side of a cow at 55 mph. Neither he, nor the cow, survived that one.

Police in Philadelphia Stealing Houses
https://marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolution/2018/12/police-philadelphia-stealing-houses.html
A forfeiture petition for one property lists one gram of marijuana, a half gram of cocaine and some over-the-counter pills as justification for taking. In one case recently settled in a $3 million class-action lawsuit, Norys Hernandez nearly lost the rowhouse she and her sister owned after police arrested her nephew on drug dealing charges and seized the house. Another family named in the suit fought to save their house from the grip of law enforcement after their son was arrested for selling $40 worth of drugs outside of it. Of the lawsuit’s four named plaintiffs, three had their houses targeted for seizure after police accused relatives dealing drugs on the property. None of the homeowners were themselves accused of committing a crime.
As families fought to keep homes targeted by the DA, the revenues from the forfeiture sales became a big moneymaker for local law enforcement – netting some $6 million annually in the best years. The proceeds turned into an unregulated budget split between the police and DA. The money made off of the seized homes went to buy wish list items ranging from new submachine guns to custom uniform embroidery.
This selfish bitch wants to keep her house while cops have to suffer a lack of custom embroidery? What a monster.
You could take any government official in Philly at random and I’d put the odds of them being corrupt shitstains at 95%.
Fuckin’ Rethuglicans who run Philly!
All cops are Republicans though, even those that vote Democratic
But don’t suggest police unions are a problem.
I got a phone call yesterday from the arkansas state police. They were trying to gain up support for some law they want passed that according to the guy on the phone, “strengthen officer protections and increased penalties for those who assault officers.”
I laughed and told the guy he’s barking up the wrong tree. If I hadn’t been busy at the time, I would have given a detailed explanation of why he barking up the wrong tree.
“Officer, we would all be much better served by unlimited civil and criminal liability for law enforcement activities. Using the standard applied to all citizens by banishing any reference to their employment as law enforcement from the trial for assault or murder to judge the appropriateness of their use of force.”
Also, your union should be disbanded.
You know for all the “War on Cops” bullshit, when I read this stuff, i’m surprised that there aren’t more cops being blown away by people that they routinely fuck over.
Look, that affordable housing isn’t going to build itself.
Didn’t see this mentioned yet: mourinho sacked

I’m too crying with joy. At least he didn’t get the chance to fuck up Mason Greenwood
Aw, and they were a match made in heaven. But really I don’t care enough to reflect any further than HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
A new environment of sex-positiveness emerged, in which young women were encouraged to discover what they enjoyed and what they did not, and they felt safe and comfortable expressing those desires.
We tried that in the ’70s. Now, those same women are doing everything they can to shame women into hating sex.
I don’t know, guys. I know a few of you were in denial, but I just finished watching this season of ‘South Park’ and the last two episodes were, to my mind, pretty explicitly pro-socialist (and not the ‘no, we just mean Nordic socialism’ lie either, but real socialism). And the two episodes before that were pretty explicit reversals of the show’s previous climate change heterodoxy. And the show even ended with a nod to supporting imprisoning Trump (and I don’t think it’s a libertarian ‘imprison all presidents!’ sentiment either).
Can’t blame them. It’s no fun being the curmudgeonly contrarian always and forever, but it’s disappointing to have a show that had the balls to stand up repeatedly especially to the fervent climate change orthodoxy, to have been reduced to regurgitating ‘acceptable’ views. It’s still very funny and clever, and the season was better than the previous two where I kind of just zoned out completely, but I think I’m now about as ambivalent toward the show as its creators apparently are.
They’re still on the air?
This. I really can’t be bothered by that show as it had been showing signs now for a few years of going stale and the people in charge going woke.
I haven’t been watching the show, but Ive heard they’ve been acting leftish lately. I’m hoping it’s a big setup for a trolling moment in the season finale and they still are a Libertarian voice.
The season finale was last week. They had some good setups they could have ran with, but I think they finished soft.
Oh whoops
That was the finale?! Yeah, I was hoping it was a big troll, too. Bummer.
Yeah, about the only thing that really landed for me was watching ‘Tegridy grow itself into a big business, eventually needing a logistics arm that could handle fulfillment, growing nationwide, and…
The “creative destruction” theme was good but too subtle to be a counter argument to the heavily pushed socialism.
I know a few of you were in denial
I probably haven’t seen an episode of South Park in close to ten years. I thought they sucked before it was cool.
Well, it’s nice that you guys are so above it all, I guess.
#metoo
Not that I didn’t like it – I loved the early seasons and the movie… OMG. Just moved on to other things.
The only thing better would have been the addition of some C4.
I saw one of those where the guy loaded his bomb with runny dog shit and it blew up directly in their faces.
Some sort of nearly permanent ink would have been good.
Absolutely trash the property of the thief.
The future of porch thief protection is drones paired with on ground security cameras.
.308 works pretty well.
Try as you might, you will never be as cool as this guy.
HAH I will be doing that in a few days! I do need a year or two to grow me some dreads like that, though.
I hope that newly elected asshat in my “People’s Republic of Connecticut” that will simply extend the stupidity that has turned a once prosperous state into a giant shithole, pays attention to the fate of tollbooths in frogland and rethinks his plans to straddle this state with them…
They have tollbooths in space?

“Texas’ New Hipsters Threaten the Very Environment That Lured Them There” by Joel Kotkin (Richard Florida’s nemesis)
FTA:
“Over the past two decades, Texas has enjoyed one of the greatest economic expansions in recent American history. In contrast to notions of a wide-open Texas defined by oil rigs and cattle, this expansion has been a profoundly urban one. Approximately 80% of all population growth since 2000 has been in the four large metropolitan areas: People may wear cowboy boots, drive pickups and attend the big Rodeo in Houston, but, they are, first and foremost, part of a great urban experiment.
Economic growth has driven this process. Since 1969, Texas has considerably out-performed California in terms of percentage job growth, as well as real personal income growth. Between 2000 and 2016, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, or BLS, Austin expanded its employment by over 50 percent, while Houston, Dallas and San Antonio grew above 30 percent, more than twice the growth of New York and three time that of San Francisco and Los Angeles.”
And
“Democrats of the old school, like Houston’s former Mayors Bob Lanier and Bill White, raised money from the real estate industry and other interests that also supported the GOP. The new Democratic crowd relies on massive funding from the post-industrial progressive gentry, much of it concentrated in traditional Republican-leaning areas: The fanciest areas around Dallas and Houston at election time sported many more Beto than Cruz signs. The big money, notes Shuvalov, now, as in the nation, goes to the Democrats.
O’Rourke helped drive this trend and benefited massively from it. Unlike many traditional Texas Democrats, O’Rourke ran as a standard-brand national progressive, earning him an almost embarrassing degree of adoration. The lanky El Paso Congressman is already being compared to Lincoln, counselled by President Obama and widely seen as a serious contender for the Presidency, despite what even The New York Times notes is “an absence of signature policy feats.”
At the local level, many new Democratic office-holders such as Hidalgo will likely adopt very much the national party agenda, with its emphasis on dense urbanization, climate change and racial “equity.” She has already announced that she will campaign against “sprawl,” which literally defines Houston, greater spending on trains, which have done very poorly in the area, and an agenda focused primarily on transfers to the poor. Add to that the Democratic Party’s climate-change mantra, including provisions to eliminate fossil fuels by 2030 and forbidding energy executives from serving in the White House, and you have a scenario that could devastate an economy still built largely on oil and gas.”
And
“The rest of America should care if Texas abandons its model. Without it, we will increasingly resemble European countries—like France—where all power and wealth is concentrated in the largest, densest and most established cities, while everyone else is on the outside looking in. And the country will have lost its premier safety valve for young people and families priced out of the coasts.
Unlike many New Yorkers or San Franciscans, most Texas city-dwellers are not forced to choose between having a family, with a middle-class lifestyle, and staying in a city they love. The large Texas cities, according to American Community Survey data, all rank above the national average in children per household, while New York and San Francisco sit near the bottom.”
Sorry. I didn’t mean to post so much text. I screwed up on pasting. My apologies.
Of course. Prog migrations ruin everything. See Portland, Ashville, Missoula, Austin, …..
These are all desirable places that will probably end up being smaller scale Detriot’s and Baltimore’s in 30 years when the prog policies all the hipsters originally fled, but then voted for, in these places, come home to roost.
In 30 years, conservatives will be telling Texan prog transplants to “go back to Texas!”
Texas is fucked, honestly.
The funny thing is that these places all have a couple commonalities at the begining. Nice scenery, reasonable property values and libertarianish local/state laws. In the end they end up with cluttered suburban sprawl, sky-high property value and draconian city taxes and ordinances.
The sky high property values here around Austin are in the places that are literally sky-high skyscrapers, or close to them.
The price of real estate drops quickly the further out from the city center you are.
I’d give it a decade before Tejas turns purple then trends Blue, at which point the GOP is fucked.
I should have said “Sky-high property values in the places that haven’t become ghettoized.” Free shit and running off employers ensures the working class neighborhoods turn to ghetto’s provided they aren’t adjacent to the nicest part of town.
*whispers*
Declining marriage rates means that we will all be living in a socialist paradise in a few decades
*runs away*
In 30 years, conservatives will be telling Texan prog transplants to “go back to Texas!”
Exactly where will these conservatives that are protesting the prog migration from Texas actually be?
By the time Texas is prog-infested and close to collapse, I don’t think you will be able to find any state that isn’t in similar shape.
….Richmond. I fucking hate what this city has become.
Eliminate fossil fuels by 2030? Good luck with that.
How does one go about forbidding energy executives from serving in the WH?
It’s much easier when you shoot them.
If you poke at the lefties enough they will admit that that is exactly what they want to do.
A campaign to eliminate fossil fuels will really go over well with the residents of houston.
Comparing Texas cities and their largely suburban character with NYC is like comparing apples and oranges. A better comparison would be something like a Texas city with the NJ suburbs.
That’s interesting. Could you explain what you mean by that? I apologize, but I am a Midwestern bumpkin that is more familiar with the suburbs of Cleveland than anything along the eastern seaboard or south of the Mason-Dixon line
Just that the character of each (Texas cities and the NJ suburbs) is more similar, by mostly being developed post-war. Most of NYC was developed before the automobile and the nature of the development reflects that. So naturally there are more kids in suburban areas because there’s more space and everyone has a car.
The writer could just as easily be comparing the outskirts of a Texas city with the same city’s older downtown areas and be scratching his head wondering why the former has more kids.
That is a good point. Thanks for the clarification.
Kotkin has hit on the point of the number of children in metro areas several times. I think your right that the comparison to NYC is not a fair one. But, he also uses LA and Chicago too (both largely developed post-war with the suburban-ish Valley of LA and the Bungalow Belt in Chicago) which I think is a better comparison. And his argument remains- cities (particularly in the north) are bleeding families. Especially families with children.
Just for the hell of it I did a little digging for population percentages under 18:
Houston – 27.5%
Brooklyn – 26%
Manhattan – 18%
So really, the phenomenon is largely a Manhattan thing. Granted, Brooklyn has some suburb-ish areas but the overall density is still 10x that of Houston.
Comparing Texas cities and their largely suburban character with NYC is like comparing apples and oranges. A better comparison would be something like a Texas city with the NJ suburbs.
This is a good point: Houston has 1/8 the density of NYC and 1/2 the density of Los Angeles. Texas cities aren’t urban so much as they are a massive sprawl of suburbia. Houston has something like three ring highways at successive distances from the city center – it is growing out, not up.
Here’s an infuriating article about the sham science that is blood spatter analysis.
See? Isn’t that infuriating?
I’ve fired my editor
https://youtu.be/79TVMn_d_Pk
Henry Lee has a sad.
Did you read Balko’s latest book? He shows all kinds of absolute horseshit ‘science’ that state’s witness experts have used to convict the innocent. Bite mark analysis, determining time of death based on stomach contents, blood spatter, etc. All about as scientific as climate change or healing crystals.
No, but I’ve read a bunch of his articles on bite mark analysis. That’s one subject to make a man’s blood boil. I’d put more faith in a shaman using chicken bones to determine guilt.
It seems through the 80’s and 90’s there was quite a bit of profit to be made in declaring oneself an expert in some unexplored field of forensics and getting sweet paid gigs as a star witness for prosecutors.
The west memphis three vigorously agree.
Honestly, that’s one case that I really can’t figure. I can concede that the prosecution was terrible and spurious and thus they should have been acquitted, but after reading a lot about the case as a whole I think the case against those guys was stronger than is commonly accepted.
I have seen the Paradise Lost series of documentaries and I’m convinced that they were not only innocent, but were knowing railroaded bu a prosecutor whose sole goal was to get a conviction, guilt or innocence be damned.
Paradise Lost has its own biases, I think, and isn’t particularly reliable when it comes to the actual case facts.
I won’t assert they were innocent.
But the reasonable doubt was big enough to drive a semi through. And the proprietorial misconduct was stunning.
There should never have been a trial.
Those movies contributed to my evolution from mildly libertarian to wildly anti-government.
And that’s a fair comment. Like I said, the prosecution was a mess and I would have voted to acquit had I been on the jury…..but I still believe that there’s a rather good chance that they did it. Echols and Miskelly, anyway, Baldwin being involved seems flimsier.
I was living in Memphis at the time that happened. I was not nearly as aware of police/prosecutorial misconduct as I am now. The vibe going around was that they had caught their guys. They had a confession from one of them (Miskelly).
My recollection wasn’t that it was so much a panic about satanism as that they caught three shitheads from the shithead part of town. I will grant that there were some Southern Baptist types who did hit the Satanism bit, but I don’t remember them being the majority.
Those movies were eye openers for me because of how much it made me realize that I was totally unaware of how shitty the govt can be when it needs to find a scape goat.
When I was 13 or so I read the Grisham book “an innocent man” about a guy who was railroaded for murder/rape in Ada, Oklahoma.
That was my first exposure to the realities of what a prosecutor/police dept. can do if they set their minds to it.
Interesting, but i have a quibble with it. He has an interesting graphic that looks flashy and cool re: states and… I don’t know. He has no Legend and never gives any indication what the different colors mean.
Feminists Think Sexist Men Are Sexier than “Woke” Men
Innate sex selection is the greatest threat to whatever feminist clap trap colleges make-up
Not only more willing to protect and care for them, but as ABLE to. See Louis C.K.’s scene where he was on a date at a diner and backed down from two assholes who wanted to fight. His date said she couldn’t respect that and left.
Yup.
I think there’s also something many women realize, even feminists. That men who are ‘benevolent sexists’ are actually going to treat them with more respect for their autonomy than the woke-ster guy in skinny jeans and a kimono sweater.
*googles “kimono sweater”*
Holy shit…
Also, this is why romance novels exist, and why there’s a large subset of feminists justifying their love of them.
Women like strong men.
Also, water is wet.
I’ve been on several gigs where I’m the geezer dinosaur surrounded by young developers. I’m always amused that I get more flirting from the young gals in the office than the youngsters because I am unabashedly a man.
I talk about hunting and fishing. I talk about guns. I like girls (mostly for not being like men). I have stories about being in fights. All of this seems to endlessly fascinate the gals. They youngsters do yoga, put “product” in their hair (it is a good day when I remember to comb mine), worry about saying the right thing to women and would never threaten to kick anyone’s ass no matter what the circumstances.
* I also realize that a good part of my attraction is that I am considered pretty harmless because I am married and old.
Speaking of bizarre obsessions…
Workers of the world, unite!
What may happen soon is a clash between political control and the law wielded by Republicans, and labor market power controlled by workers. Consider the case of the University of North Carolina. At UNC, there’s a battle over what to do with “Silent Sam,” a divisive Confederate monument on the Chapel Hill campus. Torn down by protesters in August, it would have been housed in a new building on campus under a plan from the university’s Board of Trustees. Students, employees and some alumni fought this proposal, and the Board of Governors recently rejected it.
The employees played their part not only by speaking out but also wielding labor market power: More than 80 teaching assistants and professors pledged to withhold final grades from students in response to the board’s plan to keep Silent Sam. Teaching assistants are traditionally weak employees in academia, often overworked and underpaid. In a tough labor market, such employees who were upset by a political decision by their employer would probably go on about their work rather than risk their careers. In a tight labor market where workers increasingly wield more clout, it’s not so clear who wins if workers make a stand.
Here’s where national politics come into play. The incoming class in the House looks to be the boldest, most progressive in history. Representatives-elect like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar already have significant presences on social media. What we could see is more cases like what’s going on in North Carolina, where political power controlled by Republicans is in conflict with liberal-leaning workforces, and new Democratic lawmakers with large followings on social media urging those workers to strike to get what they want politically. Worker success in places like North Carolina will lead to similar attempts elsewhere.
Yeah. Being a fucking TA at UNC is just like being enslaved by the Nazis and sent to a forced labor camp to mine iron ore. And that statue, which was right there for you to see from Day Fucking One, has become the symbol of a society so oppressive and exploitative that it cannot be allowed to survive for another minute. Come, serfs, to the barricades. Throw off those chains!
“More than 80 teaching assistants and professors pledged to withhold final grades from students in response to the board’s plan to keep Silent Sam.”
I believe when you took the students money you obligated yourself to hold up your end of the bargain. You dont get to opt out.
Tell them, once, if they don’t deliver grades on time, they are fired.
Then, if they don’t deliver grades on time, fire them.
This
Unfortunately, the schools are in on the act.
A+
Yeah. Colleges Hate it when you point out that they are a business. Give out the grades you little shitstains and don’t hold other people hostage for your pet causes. In any regular corporation you would be fired. In a charity you would be investigated for fraud.
I’m not one who ever advocates for more federal spending. In light of the kulturekampf going on around confedrate statues however, I think I’d be 100% on board if Trump set up a grant for towns to conserve existing Confederate monuments and/or build new ones.

“a divisive Confederate monument on the Chapel Hill campus”
It’s a monument that honors confederate soldiers that died in combat. Maybe we should stop saying that the Civil War was the deadliest war in American history, since we are suppose to un-person the dead confederates. This is some crazy shit.
Vacation? I get Tuesday off, I guess.
I’m using sick days for the two Mondays, those don’t get rolled over to next year. Other then that, I’ve already got a vacation planned in April I need to bank vacation time for, and a weekend in the summer. Doesn’t look like I’ll be able to bank enough in time for a trip to Belgium/Germany in the summer, looks like that’s getting pushed to 2020.
Slate article about the ACA ruling.
It is an affront to the constitutional separation of powers and an embarrassment to the federal judiciary.
As opposed to the ruling that held it as a tax.

Now tell us how a District Judge in Hawaii setting national immigration policy is just the rule of law in action.
Unfortunately, research suggests that women do in fact find sexist men attractive.
There it is, in a nutshell. “Why don’t these stupid people behave as I want them to? Why can’t I move them around like chess pieces, to show my superiority to them?”
Repost from a dead thread. )Why are you people not online at 2:30 am Almost Eastern Time?) “They Shall Not Grow Old” is only showing for 1-2 nights. On Oahu it showed Monday and again on the 27th. No other shows. Not sure the DTG’s for your locales.
Short bullet review: Go watch this movie!
I was skeptical because it is the LoR director and it has colorized film but the trailers looked interesting so says I, “Why not go watch it? You’ve walked some of those battlefields and been to the Imperial War Museum.” I am glad I watched it and I think you’ll be glad you did too.
Jackson was asked by the IWM to come up with a movie using the old movie footage and interviews with soldiers from the 1960’s and 1970’s. He focused on the British Army experience on the western front and he brings those long dead Soldiers alive. The movie is nothing but the old footage and the interviews with the soldiers. Not a word of other narration.
As a former soldier it is a testament to Jackson’s skills that I recognized the timeless aspects of soldiering and the unique aspects of 1914-1918 and how these soldiers were people and not just jerky old images. There were a few moments when I felt my heart beat faster and even a faint taste of pre-battle in my mouth and that is damn rare for me from a movie.
Before the movie starts Jackson invites you to stay after the credits for a 30 minute explanation of how the movie was made. That is worth the price of admission right there. Plus in that 30 minutes is one of the most touching moments of the movie. Jackson films one of the original locations today and as he cuts back to the close ups of the infantry from the original footage drops that the the majority of the men you are looking at will be dead in less than 30 minutes. The fear and forced nonchalance is clear on multiple faces. You are looking at the last images of the dead as they themselves saw it. Haunting.
Jackson does encourage the viewer to ask their parents and grandparents about what their parents and grandparents said about the war. Because even those 2d hand memories are fading fast as those generations die. This war impacted both sides of my family and is directly the reason my father was born here versus Italy.
I didn’t bother with the 3D version, This big screen version was enough.
But again, go see this film.
No thanks. I am sure everything you said is true but I just dont think I could sit through that. From your very well worded description alone I almost feel like I could puke.
Puke? That’s….a bit of an odd reaction.
That war was horrible beyond description. The incredible waste of life and human potential, and for what? It is sickening to think about.
The disassembly of large, old empires typically is done with blood and fire. WWI was mostly about disassembling the Ottoman Empire and the Hapsburg dynasty.
While the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire could have been a purely internal affair (civil wars of secession and nationalism), the temptation of neighboring powers to try and bite off a piece was both unsurprising and not unprecedented.
WWII was, in many ways, just round two of neighboring powers (Russia and Germany) trying to take their bite of the defunct Empire. With, in Germany’s case, yet another round of their long-standing war with France, dating back to Napoleon, really.
It was nothing unusual. Even the way the horrific body counts came about was largely the result of technology outrunning tactics, and not for the first time. Probably the only unique thing was that it was filmed, and the post-war view of the fighting was largely created by a handful of disaffected Western European writers.
All war is sickening but there is something about that war that gets to me. I also probably couldn’t watch the movie without getting blood-spitting angry. I guess I am getting squeamish in my old age. Hell, I cant even shoot a duck anymore.
“Even the way the horrific body counts came about was largely the result of technology outrunning tactics, and not for the first time”
One thing that has come out recently is that the Germans, in particular, took lessons from the Russo-Japanese War. Although the Japanese suffered large casualties attacking Russian defenses, the losses were lower than military thinking at the time expected. Thus, the Germans were convinced that frontal assaults against modern, entrenched defenses could be made with “acceptable” casualties.
I think the Germans miscalculated the difference in the quality of the Russian formation v French and English formations.
I’ve seen a couple adds for this, unfortunately it’s a little bit of a drive. Maybe I can convince someone in my family to go with me.
The War that is rarely discussed (unless it’s the hundred year anniversary of its end), because it reveals the stupidity of most overseas conflicts
I remember my American History text book in school barely gave it a blurb. It was a blip on the radar between “ROBBER BARONS!!!” and how heroic WW2 was.
Why did your american history textbook cover the tendency of local nobles to rob merchant shipping along the Rhine?
WWII is convenient in allowing us to pretend that there is always a “good guy” and a “bad guy” in every conflict and war is simplistic and done for noble ends. Amazingly this is the same childish view that made people first celebrate the mobilization for what would become WWI.
And then we wonder why college kids today look at the Civil War from such a simplistic prism and with utter historical ignorance
That is usual. “C’mon boys, let’s go whip ’em! We will be home in a week!”
People never learn.
There are wars which lasted anywhere from Forty Minutes to Six Days. A week isn’t an entirely unwarrented time frame.
I’ve seen strong arguments that WWI was actually much more consequential than WWII, on the grounds that WWI basically set in place the international system and relations that we have now.
Ottoman Empire – gone. Resulting nation-states, with some adjustment, still around.
Middle East – redone in its current highly dysfunctional form.
Russian revolution and resulting empire, only recently undone.
And, of course, the sequel (WWII) being largely the result of fucking up the resolution of WWI. The Germans and the Japanese both feeling abused and disrespected, and the Western ambitions of the Russian empire being the root causes that were in turn created by WWI.
“WWI was actually much more consequential”
Absolutely that’s true. WWII just reaffirmed what had been concluded at the end of the previous war.
I’ve read that by the time Wilson got his wish for US entry into the war, it was basically over.
The only net change was it took a few more months fighting and dying, and that the terms of the armistice could then be more favorable to Britain/France.
FWIW, I don’t think the bolshevik revolution happens if the Russians aren’t fighting ww1.
If the commies never take power in Russia, the whole of the 20th century would have been a lot less bloody.
Add to that the establishment of the current international order. The League of Nations may have utterly failed, but it shaped the way we do things in international diplomacy to this day.
dbleagle,
Great review. I watched it yesterday too. My buddy and I thought that the last 30 minutes where Jackson talked about how they made the film being almost better than the film itself.
You hit the same exact point about the image of the Fusiliers in the sunken road being the most creepy/poignant part of the movie. The one kid who’s trying to smile for the camera, but you can tell he is scared shitless. Ugh.
All the showings around me were in 3D, so we sat through that. Not too bad, but I don’t know why they even made that version.
It was an entirely different movie than I thought it was going to be. I expected it to be a bit more historical. Places and times. Instead it was entirely about the experience of the common grunt in the trenches. How he ate, slept and shit. Very humanizing.
I believe when you took the students money you obligated yourself to hold up your end of the bargain. You dont get to opt out.
“So what you’re saying, in plain English, is, ‘I’m on strike,’ right? Fine. You’re fired. Collect your things and be off this campus in ten minutes.”
US ballistic missile systems have very poor cyber-security
Yet somehow they manage to put enough content filtering software on your desk computer as to render it nearly useless.
My goddamned iPhone bugs me daily for updates, upgrades, etc. It never ends. If I wanted something that costs this much and took so much maintenance and time I would have gotten something with tits. I am about ready to toss the thing.
If I wanted something that costs this much and took so much maintenance and time I would have gotten something with tits.
The sexbot thread is up there. Seriously, I larfed.
My iPhone never bugs me for updates. I have to check to see if there are updates pending. Maybe there’s a setting you can change?
Possibly but I cant be bothered to figure it out. I make phone calls. I play WordWarp to kill time. That’s it.
Daily?? Mine is maybe once a month, tops.
The military uploads enough filters and blockers to their network to slow down the computers hard drive and make even basic web use almost impossible. It’s telling that they are more worried some soldier might accessing pr0n out there somewhere than they are about missile security.
In this case, physical isolation is the best option. But, I imagine they probably suck at that too.
Recently I’ve been watching the first season of Miami Vice on demand. I remember the show being on when I was a little kid and it seeming cool from the commercials, but I was too young to actually watch it. It’s surprisingly fun, if hilariously dated in many respects.
Also, “Alf”
Speaking of teevee shows, I have been watching a show called “Chuck” lately. Once you get past the absurdly preposterous premise, it’s actually extremely entertaining.

Judge Sullivan offers Flynn a chance to postpone this sentencing hearing to rethink his guilty plea. Flynn replies, ““I appreciate that, but no your honor.”
What does that mean?
I think it means Flynn is more worried about being charged with being an unregistered foreign agent, which he may be at some risk for. I gather this plea clears the slate for him at a pretty minimal cost. He took the deal for that reason, and Mueller offered it as a way to embarrass Trump.
Yes. I think Flynn is a cowed man who views this plea as an acceptable price to pay for getting completely out of this mess for good.
It is more than embarrassing Trump. It is about terrifying anyone who might be tempted to work with Trump. They are destroying lives over trivial crimes or not-crimes.
Anyone who talks to the FBI has to have rocks in their head.
If I worked one of those White House jobs that required me to deal with the FBI, I’d probably be very tempted to record every single conversation.
Francis Wilkinson- the Bloomberg version of Krugabe.
Then, in 2016, when the Republican Party chose a presidential nominee who demonized Mexicans, repeatedly linked blacks with violent crime and earned enthusiastic support from Nazis, Cheerios maker General Mills gave more than twice as much money to Republicans as the company gave to Democrats.
Like a lot of companies, General Mills seems to like Democratic consumers and Republican voters. It’s a familiar dichotomy.
Nike went all in on the former with its big Colin Kaepernick television ad, celebrating the rebel football quarterback who has been blackballed by NFL team owners as surely as the Hollywood Ten were blacklisted by McCarthy-era Hollywood. Nike sales, dependent on the young, spiked in the wake of the Kaepernick ad.
Yet Nike employees, along with the company’s political action committee, generally combine to give more money to Republicans than to Democrats. “Believe in something,” the Kaepernick ad demands. Or, if necessary, pretend to believe in something while investing your political money in diametrically opposed beliefs.
Rational self-interest is a tool of the Satan.
We need more self-immolation on the altar of social justice. It’s better to curse the darkness than live by the light of a candle produced by an insufficiently woke kkkorporation. And besides, all your out of work former employees can just rely on their universal basic income to pay for their Cheerios and Nikes.
“Or, if necessary, pretend to believe in something while investing your political money in diametrically opposed beliefs.”
Or, as an author completely fail to distinguish between ideas held by corporate execs and everyone who works for them. The stupid in that paragraph burns.
Waaaah, guy who wears a Fidel shirt isn’t someone people want to hire. What a pity.
The more I think about the UBI the harder time I have squaring that this is a popular idea among some libertarians. As someone else said, we already have a UBI: $0 as dictated by nature.
Bob Murphy does a good analysis of it. It’s a non starter because for it to actually be a living “Income”, you have to tax upper groups so much that it hampers growth on that end. If you make it small, it won’t do any good to actually be used as a basic income. in the end you are always chasing your tail.
I think the libertarian case for the UBI is that it would replace all other forms of entitlement/welfare spending and with it being universal it would create less perverse incentives to work.
A UBI would probably actually be better than the current entitlement/welfare state we currently live in, provided that if implemented it replaced all other forms of social spending. I dont believe this would ever happen though.
Yes. I’m not a big fan of UBI, but if there were a choice between the current welfare leviathan and UBI, I’ll pick UBI every time.
Of course, we all know that UBI would only be added to the current structure. It would never replace it.
I did a back of envelope calculation. If you eliminated all transfer programs and gave everyone a UBI at the poverty level (although my calculation was technically a little higher than this, as I did all adults at the 1 person HH level to avoid marriage penalty and all children at the additional person level), you could pay for the UBI with about a 35% flat tax.
Now that sound high, but consider that:
1. It eliminates the SS part of FICA, so that is a 12.4% tax savings on income.
2. A family of 4 would have to be well above the median HH income before they actually pay any net tax.
The people hurt would probably be middle income singles and some high earners who currently have large amounts of deductions.
I don’t favor this, but it is better than the current welfare system.
“pay for the UBI” means approximately balance the federal budget. So it would be paying for the UBI and non-transfer payment spending.
Poverty level where?
I used the 48 state number, not the AK and HI number.
you could pay for the UBI with about a 35% flat tax.
If UBI is counted as taxable income, I think you probably knocked it back below the poverty level. Once you start grossing up payments to account for taxes, you have to nearly double the payments (you pay more to cover the tax, then you pay more to cover the tax on what you paid to cover the tax, etc.).
If UBI is not counted as income, then that 35% flat tax is strictly on employment and investment income, and sure looks like it would be a massive tax increase, especially at the lower levels but also at the higher levels.
Would the 35% flat tax also cover Medicare and Medicaid spending, or would those programs continue as is?
It was a while back, but I think Medicaid went away but Medicare stayed. Not sure, thought, it might have been axing both. I only think that as I mentioned the 12.4% tax cut, instead of a 15.3% cut. The goal was to eliminate ALL transfer payments, so lets say I cut both out entirely.
And the UBI was untaxed, so someone not working got to the poverty level.
Using 2019 poverty levels, a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 kids) would recieve a UBI of $32920, which at 35% means the 0% tax level would be $94,057. At that point their income tax == UBI so they are net balanced. They aren’t a net tax payer until above that level.
Like I said, singles may get hit, their zero point is $34685. This would be a bit harsh on the middle class single dude, but maybe not considering we are getting rid of the FICA tax and the current tax schedule isn’t that friendly to that dude either. A single person making 80k is going to get hit hard regardless.
Its hard for me to sort out the tax impact of larger UBI transfer payments (because they would exceed current transfer payments if UBI is set at the poverty level) and taxing at a level that would balance the budget (which I think your flat tax is intended to do both).
I think the libertarian case for the UBI is that it would replace all other forms of entitlement/welfare spending and with it being universal it would create less perverse incentives to work.
Total entitlement spending by the feds is around $2.2BB/year, including Medicare, not counting the cost of the agencies administering it. Not sure if the UBI would be paid based on individuals, adults, or households, but if you divvy it up by individuals, it comes to around $6,200/head. By household, it comes to $17K per household.
Realistically, it would be no less than the official poverty level, which would require a massive increase. Anyone who seriously proposes a budget neutral UBI is simply unrealistic. Especially when you consider the difficulty of getting rid of Medicare and Medicaid, which is big chunk of current entitlement spending. Poverty-level UBI, plus Medicare and Medicaid, would destroy the budget and the economy.
Stop calling it Universal Basic Income. It’s proper name is ‘Gun Budget’.
That’s my utilitarian argument. In practice it would take on the form of minimum wage and it would be a never ending struggle of Marxist economic leveling.
My moral argument is that it still requires taxation and taxation is still theft, even if it is ostensibly “wiser” spending.
Then, in 2016, when the
RepublicanDemocrats Party chose a presidential nominee who demonizedMexicansMen, repeatedly linked blacks with violent crime and earned enthusiastic support fromNazisCommies,Democratic politicians are unlikely to drive a wedge between these two positions, because many still depend on corporate donations themselves — especially as labor money is pinched by Republican policy and court decisions.
“labor money”
those forced union contributions belong to the Democrat Party.

Rand Paul mocks the demise of the Weekly Standard and WokeHat has thoughts:
BigCrimeHat
@Popehat
Replying to @RandPaul
Dude, you’re garbage. How did anyone ever think you weren’t garbage.
Cosmos are full-on neocons now
Dude, you’re garbage. How did anyone ever think you weren’t garbage.
That’s funny, I feel the same way about Ken White.
Yeah, I seem to recall a time when he wasn’t such an asshat. I don’t really follow him, though.
I used to read him fairly regularly. He has always been a leftish Democrat, but one who took principled stands in defense of liberty. Now, though, #RESIST overrides everything else.
The man is atrocious on free speech. I don’t know why people pretend otherwise. He wrote a lengthy article defending the CA law mandating compelled speech for pro-life pregnancy centers.
I think someone dropped him on his head or maybe he got hold of a bad batch of dope. I cant remember when it happened but I think he has a severe case of the Trump syndrome.
I am still amazed at how unhinged everyone has become over the wrong kind of guy winning the presidency.
What was Rand’s big sin again? That he was willing to work with Trump on something? That he called out the media for their lies? I don’t remember what it was that got Ken so pissed, but he’s gone full retard
He doesn’t scream ORANGE MAN BAD 24/7.
Remember when Ken White gave a shit about civil liberties? Those were fun times, but we can’t allow for such frivolities when the urgent need to #RESIST compels us.
Rand believes in small government. White, not so much
I still don’t get the libertarian hate for Rand Paul that comes from all corners of libertarianism. He ran an unsuccessful Presidential campaign, the failure of which had at least as much to do with the media running interference against him (per the orders handed down in the leaked DNC emails) as it with it being poorly handled. Beyond that he didn’t promise to nuke the military from space in his first day in office so ipso-facto he’s a war monger.
His credibility as an actual libertarian with a Senate seat and a non-zero chance to be President scares the shit out of libertarians who prefer to marinate in ideological purity and avoid the grubby business of actually getting results.
“marinate in ideological purity and avoid the grubby business of actually getting results.”
I would not consider his opponents at TOS, Ken White, or Niskanen as “ideologically pure”. Just the opposite.
Agreed, its seems the more “ideologically pure” libertarians at least tolerate Paul as close enough.
I genuinely feel bad for the guy. Woketarians hate him because he’s the icky conservativey sort of libertarian they hate, Mises types have dismissed him out of hand because…..???? Something about not anti-warring hard enough. Even though he sponsors bills contrary to the interests of the interventionists at every turn.
The Mises people have always been complimentary toward the Pauls (particularly his father). That’s their bread and butter.
I think a lot of Koch-funded people hate Mises and the Pauls, because they’re actually successful at electoral politics.
Except they are far less supportive of Rand than they are of Ron. They wisper Ron’s name in hushed and reverent tones where his son get a casual mention and a “he does some good things but….”
“They wisper Ron’s name in hushed and reverent tones where his son get a casual mention and a “he does some good things but….”
Don’t we all?
Rand will never be his father, because Rand actually has a political future.
The only asshole move I’ve ever heard of Tom Woods pulling was when he introduced Ron Paul at his 1000 episode even
“Thank you Ron for being the only libertarian voice in gov’t” and now that you are gone there is nobody left”
I couldn’t help but think Ron’s inner monologue at that moment was “except my kid dickhead”
Rand is willing to make compromises to achieve some progress. Love Ron for what he stood for, but in the end his effect on Congress was next to nothing.
I was thinking more actual libertarians, not cosmos or TDSers.
A lot of that hate comes from people who claim to be libertarians yet are anything but. A lot of people like to throw that word around but if you start asking them they have a million exceptions to liberty.
Oh, no! A propaganda outlet of the Deep State went bankrupt. How will we survive without it?
You never know which Popehat you’re going to get.
That’s just sad.
I can understand if Ken doesn’t agree with Rand on specific issues, but a general insult like that to someone who is one of the more civil libertarian members of the entire Congress is more a reflection on Ken than it is on Rand.
Exactly. Hate-following someone on Twitter displays a profound lack of intelligence.
Good grief, those are some vicious replies. I happen to agree with Paul.
Kn White (and all the other twitter poo-flingers) are Hihn socks.
If all the neo-cons replying to that thread had bought subscriptions, the WS would still be going.
I think it means Flynn is more worried about being charged with being an unregistered foreign agent
Wasn’t it Flynn whose son was being held hostage by the feds to coerce him to “co-operate”?
i know this is CNN but Flynn Jr. sounds like a nutbag.
https://www.cnn.com/2018/05/22/politics/michael-flynn-jr/index.html
The establishment hysterics over anyone who laughs at the demise of the pathetic Weekly Standard is rather illuminating. PROTECT THE GUILD!
The Weekly Standard was a more poisonous publication than The Nation. That’s just a fact. It’s death is something to be celebrated. “Orange man bad” is not a good enough reason to back warmongers.
The American Conservative is critical of Trump, but they don’t promote every pointless foreign intervention every proposed.
There are also plenty of ways to be substantively critical of Trump without engaging in the same kind of puerile insults towards his voters that the leftist media engages in. Shockingly enough, gratuitous insults of their readership proved to be a poor business decision.
And we haven’t even gotten to the fact that the NeverTrump crew from TWS started frothing in defense of George Soros once Soros started bankrolling grifters like Kristol and McMuffin’s astroturf outfits.
McSally appointed to John McCains seat – A compromise that lets almost everyone get who they voted for?
I larfed. Those are going to be some uncomfortable Arizona Senate delegation meetings. She’s obviously the choice of AZ Repubs, so the Repub governor would have been hard pressed to pick someone else.
Not sure why their choice was a women who couldn’t even beat out a rather dimwitted women who has an extensive record of verbally disparaging her own constituents, though.
A UBI would probably actually be better than the current entitlement/welfare state we currently live in, provided that if implemented it replaced all other forms of social spending. I dont believe this would ever happen though.
The real problem (and I realize I’m preaching to the choir, here) with pretending the UBI would replace “welfare as we know it” is the ugly truth that the real beneficiaries of the welfare apparatus are the administrators, bureaucrats and nonprofit parasites, not the downtrodden poors. There is absolutely no way those valuable members of society would be cast aside in the name of economic efficiency.
^This^
Those programs exist to employ government slugs. I think I remember correctly…for every dollar that goes into the welfare state something like 3 cents makes it to the people using those programs. The bureaucracy soaks up the other 97 cents.
Clinton Foundation has similar numbers
And, naturally, the UBI would be used as the vehicle for social engineering.
“Oh, you want your UBI? Then you have to qualify by [insert totalitarian nightmare scenario here]. The UBI is basically commie-lite – the almighty State controls a big chunk of your income, so you will do whatever Your Masters require. Believing it wouldn’t be the ultimate social engineering tool is just naive.
^THIS X 1000. I cannot see UBI as doing anything but giving the government a sizable new cudgel to beat us into submission with.
^This
And the justification I frequently hear that “there aren’t enough jobs to go around” is horseshit too.
“There aren’t enough jobs to go around”
I think that brain dead commie girl has a plan to fix that.
And the justification I frequently hear that “there aren’t enough jobs to go around” is horseshit too.
