I donated because I feel guilty about not having time to write articles.
Well, it’s about that time of year that you can make a grand resolution to change that, if you like!
… Or not!
Hopefully in February our house will be in order and I can write again.
What happened to your house? Are you no longer king of your castle?
Or master of his domain?
I hate resolutions, but I promise a submission shortly. I’ve been coasting too long.
But thanks to all you who provide this awesomeness every day. It is truly appreciated.

Sherryl Attkisson drops the news.
Hard not to love that woman.

That was a funny read.
But, also Attkisson has clearly be compromised by Putin or something
I can’t stand her because she’s an anti-vaccine conspiracy theorist. Rest of her reporting’s pretty good, but man that irritates the fuck out of me.
“she’s an anti-vaccine conspiracy theorist”
I didn’t know that. She actually pushes that or just thinks that people should be allowed to forgo vaccines? I’m OK with the latter.
She’s full on anti-vaxx conspiracy nut.
https://sharylattkisson.com/medical-vaccine-links/
That’s nuts.
In her defense, the anthrax vaccine is a scam implemented by government force on unwitting guinea pigs.
The government forced me to get an anthrax vaccination. The only shot I ever had that left my arm numb and gave me a bruise in my life. I considered it suspect.
In her defense, the anthrax vaccine is a scam implemented by government force on unwitting guinea pigs.
Yeah, I think the anti-vaxxers get traction because so many pro-vaccine people like to pretend that all vaccines are 100% safe. Pretty much all vaccines are great, from a utilitarian perspective, but a great many of them have a (usually vanishingly small) chance of failure, sometimes extreme. They are a great medicine with an acceptable risk, not a magic bullet.
Would.
Second. Also since I donated, you get Sheena Is A Punk Rocker.

You have to donate for it to work?

can someone else read this and tell me what the police were supposed to do?
Yeah other than being black, I got robbed as a teller by a guy dressed exactly like that… but i don’t like the cops harassing people either… I’ve talked to enough cops who think they are the shit to know that they think they know when people are lying and just refuse to believe anything else that could occur.
I doubt the cops were telling the truth about the breaking and entering suspect. They don’t send out 4 squad cars for that. They send out one bored patrolman, after several hours, to fill out a report no one will read. That said, whatever they were looking for, they were polite. I don’t see how he can ask for much more. If he thinks it would have somehow been less stressful for him had he been white, he’s dead wrong.
paging Lachowsky to the white courtesy phone…
Lachowsky, white courtesy phone.
I’ve known a white person to get detained. No wait, I’ve known several including myself.
Never known. Derp on me.
In all honesty nothing. From his own descriptions of their actions those cops did EVERYTHING that we could ever ask of them. They were polite, courteous, and did not escalate. I suppose I we could quibble that they didn’t do a little more to establish his identity and once they determined he was a college professor backed off a little but from this guys own descriptions of events the cops never acted as if they regarded him as guilty merely a subject of interest.
Put me in the same situation, the description of the perp was white male, 6′ heavyset, short hair and about 50 and they held me under those circumstances it would have been uncomfortable but I would have understood them detaining me and would hope they acted exactly the way he describes.
This is why BLM is such bullshit, yes we absolutely have a problem with policing and police violence but you can’t blame the cops for the fact that people who look like you do commit over half of all crime and then attack them when they do pretty much everything right
To be sure. You can’t be too careful in Trump’s America.
So when I was in high school I was at a friend’s house. His mom was sort of the group mom for her son’s friends. One of my friends was in the front yard and had just gotten there from being inside the house at the same time a bunch of city cops were walking around looking for someone. They saw him and stopped him. They were questioning him when she stepped out of the house and started to give them the business but good. This was a duplex in town; not a bad part of town but not a particularly good part, either. The point she kept making was, “He was in the yard. You don’t know that he wasn’t anywhere else. I’m telling you he was inside. Now fuck off.” He’s about 5’10”, blonde with blue eyes.
I’ve been stopped by police for plenty shit before when I was young. Mostly when I wore hoodies and ballcaps low on my brow. Now that I’m older and dress a little older, it never happens. I’m not saying dude should be stopped by police because he’s a black man in a hoodie and shades. However, if the police get a description that’s frankly pretty vague based on what seemed to be a current, ongoing situation, where urgency is a thing, I hate to say it but “young black man in a knit cap and hoodie” fits the description of a lot of people who aren’t college professors doing the smart-casual bit. I feel for the guy, but I don’t know what the cops should’ve done differently.
Also, ask a white guy with a beard and a truck if he’s ever been stereotyped. Or a gun-owner.
“Also, ask a white guy with a beard and a truck if he’s ever been stereotyped.”
I use to get pulled over by police all the time, because I drove an Oldsmobile Delta 88 (85 model). The cops would always say that my car fit a description
My wife’s best friend has a brother who is a ex-con biker and looks the part – covered in tats, shaved head, scraggly goatee, etc. I assure you, he is never lonely because he gets uniformed company all the time, and his complexion is just slightly darker than newly fallen snow.
Don’t even get me started. I’m a tattooed, goateed biker type. Up until about ten years ago I was treated like John Dillinger. I’ve been arrested dozens of times, beaten by cops, spent time in jail, been framed for petty bullshit and had my property stolen from me many times. My life experience with cops could be a movie called ” making a libertarian.”
Go on…
Don’t leave, sister.
THANKS FOR DONATION.
I wouldn’t categorize that as a puffy coat.
And he did kinda look like a criminal. I mean, those shoes! Ouch!
As a mostly quiet lurker, I gladly donated. This is easily, my most favorite web destination. Heck without you guys, I’d have so much time on my hands, I wouldn’t know what to do. So thanks to everyone who writes & comment here. You are truly appreciated.
Heck without you guys, I’d have so much time on my hands, I wouldn’t know what to do.

True – its like you guys know me.
Not in the biblical sense, of course.

…nd upstart Prole Feed (sp?)
One word:
“Prolefeed is a Newspeak term in the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell. It was used to describe the deliberately superficial entertainment including literature, movies and music that were produced by Prolesec, a section of the Ministry of Truth, to keep the “proles” (i.e., proletariat) content and to prevent them from becoming too knowledgeable. The ruling Party believes that too much knowledge could motivate the proles to rebel against them”

“How Bill Kristol Closed the Conservative Mind”
In honor of WokeHat and his undying love for the Weekly Standard.
One of the links in that column is to Bruce Bartlett’s twitter feed, in which he huffs and puffs about how terrible TWS’s implosion is. Which is interesting, since Bartlett broke from mainstream conservatism because he started ripping the W administration in general and the Iraq War in particular……but now he’s mad about the demise of that administration and that war’s biggest cheerleaders?
Because Drumpf, of course. What a fraud.
There are only a few anti-Trump people who haven’t abandoned their principles in order to oppose him. It’s a small club
“’I’d be happy if Ron Paul left and ran as a third party candidate. I was very happy when Pat Buchanan was allowed to go off and run as a third party candidate,’” Carlson recalls Weiss saying of his conversation with Kristol.”
Bill Kristol sounds like Nick Sarwark. He’s going to get along swimmingly in the LP
Well, since there’s no discernable difference between Bill Kristol and Bill Weld, why not?
The fuck is wrong with Ken White? He hates Rand Paul because…what, Paul doesn’t hate Trump?
Was Ken White ever actually a self-described sorta libertarianish lawyer? His true lefty colors have come out recently.
Not Lefty- neocon.
There are some solid Left-wing voices who never go out of their way to praise a character like Bill Kristol
Maybe I just don’t know much about the guy, but I thought Ken White would have been more on the skeptic side of foreign-policy interventionism.
Yeah, I’ve noticed that, too. White and a number of other folks I used to read, and thought were overall pretty good, have proven to be really bad on not just foreign policy, but lots of other things.

Vanity Fair has a serious fuckin’ scoop here!!!! Rich, popular preppie jocks tend to be assholes in high school. HOLY SHIT, I NEVER WOULD HAVE GUESSED!!!!
The Boofing Truthers just won’t let it go
“The Boofing Truthers” would make a solid band name.
Except I have trouble seeing much in there that is actually unusually assholish for high school students.
Well, that’s my point – there’s nothing unusual about it. Teenagers are the fucking worst.
I read that article and it sounds just about identical to my own high school years. I went to a fairly hoity-toity boys private school (our most famous recent alum is the husband of Jenna Bush, Henry Hager) despite my family being pretty average middle class. My parents took out a bunch of loans to send me there because they were determined I get the best education possible (and, much as I generally hated that school, I will say that the quality of the education was excellent).
It was a small, claustrophobic place. My graduating class was 54, most of whom were the scions of wealthy, socially notable Richmond families and had gone to school together since kindergarten. The upperclassmen ruled with an iron fist, lording over the freshmen class in general but in particular the outcast freshmen, like me. There was a senior lounge where they would congregate during the day when they had free periods, and all the freshmen knew to tread carefully when walking by that room because they’d snatch you up and drag you inside and do shit like draw on your face with permanent markers, dogpile you, play “human pinball” by lining up around the outside walls and shoving you back across the room, and then throw you out the window. Parties were everything and drinking was very heavy – my senior year, I drank more than I ever did in college, and I wasn’t even close to being one of the popular kids. It was an oddity, probably because the classes were so small, that by senior year everyone went to the parties and drank, but just socialized there within their own social circle. Anyway, long story short, everything in that article sounds like my adolescence. Do I look back on those years fondly? Not really, but neither am I whining and crying about it 25 years later. It sucked, I muddled through it, and moved on with my life.
My graduating class was 54, most of whom were the scions of wealthy, socially notable Richmond families and had gone to school together since kindergarten.
If we were the same age, I probably went to college with some of them (scholarship student at a very small Virginia liberal arts college). And, meh, I wouldn’t say they were unusually decent or unusually dickish about them. Honestly, the impression I get is that the people who whine the loudest about “those damned preppy jocks” (like the authors of the article) aren’t whining much out of any particular moral or ethical complaint, as out of simply a difference in tastes. Their particular clique weren’t the “cool kids” and they resent them for it. But, as for abusiveness, given the chance, they’d be just as bad or worse.
My complaint about those assholes was the preferential treatment. Preppie jock boy steals a car and it’s all, “Boys will be boys.” Young Mad Scientist skips class one day and it’s all, “You’re undermining everything this school stands for. One week of detention.” I wasn’t. But I will be now.
Hampden-Sydney I’m guessing? Yup, had a bunch who went there, a handful at W&L, one or two at Randolph Macon. They would have been in college 1994-98.
Eh, not sure I’d agree with that characterization, but it’s not worth a debate because, again, I’m not one of the whiny bitches. Also, I’m guessing high school dickheads are often less dickish in college simply due to growing up a bit.
I know nothing about preppie Virginia high schools.
*hides penny loafers and polos*
Hampden-Sydney I’m guessing?
Yup. Class of ’93.
And, yeah, it probably did have something to do with the whole growing up part of life. That said, I didn’t find it particularly more cliquish or inhospitable than my public high school. If anything, maybe a little less so.
LOL. Nothing was funnier than the reaction of my frat brother from Brooklyn to a HS party. It was like he was in a foreign country.
It was like he was in a foreign country.
In a good way, I hope.
Huh? That was my first job, about ten years later than you were there.
My high school – a small, public “magnet” school in the ‘hood, graduating class of 124 – was the opposite of all of that. The seniors didn’t prey on anybody, everyone more or less got along, any parties were small and kept strictly on the DL, etc.
Spare me. It’s a fucking Vanity Fair article, the magazine for privileged Hollywood assholes.
This Weekly Standard thing annoys the fuck out of me. On the one hand, I have no time for Bill Kristol. On the other hand, every single piece of media out there is now either “OMG I LOVE TRUMP MAGA” or “ORANGE DEVIL IS GOING TO KILL US ALL”. Nothing for us right-ish leaning libertarians who don’t like Trump.
Not true. The American Conservative (which is not a self-identified libertarian publication, but does print articles by libertarians) is very critical of Trump, but also especially critical of The Weekly Standard and neocons.
It’s the last non-interventionist publication
National Review seems to runs the gamut, and I think both the pro and anti Trumpster writers take a measured approach, not a lot of over the top praise or condemnation.
The National Review publishes Kevin Williamson, who is awesome, but also some people who are decidedly not awesome. It’s a mixed bag. But at least the people are intelligent and well informed. It’s a better read than most political drivel,.
VDH and Andrew McCarthy have also been invaluable for taking the piss out of the Mueller media circlejerk. (To, uh, mix metaphors.)
Yeah, I can see that. National Review is much better on economics than The American Conservative (they have pro and anti tariff folks on their staff). For my taste, though, The American Conservative is better on foreign policy. They also get Rand Paul and Massie to write articles on specific topics on occasion.
They publish a wide variety of opinions. Some contradictory with one another.
I remember one time they published an Ann Coulter article that was kind of crap, and a friend of mine who is a conservative judge got all pissed that “one of the last bastions of intellectual conservatism” would stoop to publishing that.
Yeah, I know. NR’s Michael Brendan Doherty was a big opponent of the Iraq War and has been critical of Obama and Trump’s foreign policy in the Middle East. And CW Cooke and Kevin Williamson are pretty libertarian in their economics. I don’t disagree that they have a good diversity of thought.
For the most part, the notion that the Weekly Standard was the only center-right publication that was critical of Trump is largely a media invention. These people need to get their noses out of The New Yorker and read some publications off the beaten path
David French is constantly convinced that Trump is going down with this Russia investigation.
Truth is I don’t know enough about our system to know whether that’s actually true or not.
the notion that the Weekly Standard was the only center-right publication that was critical of Trump is largely a media invention.
I think the difference is that the Weekly Standard got itself to the point of being so reflexively anti-Trump that they’d oppose conservative policies as long as it was anti-Trump. Places like the National Review or even the American Conservative have enough of a compass that you don’t see it as much.
And the major media is happy to present anti-Trump to the point of abandoning conservative policies as the only alternative to Trump-worship.
I thought French was convinced that Trump was going to be brought down by the campaign violation.
Which seems more likely than anything related to Russia at this point.
For the most part, the notion that the Weekly Standard was the only center-right publication that was critical of Trump is largely a media invention.
Indeed.
That’s fair. It’s generally pretty NeverTrump, but not in nearly as heavy-handed and insulting a way as TWS was, and they do publish some Trump-friendly pieces, most notably by VDH. Williamson and Cooke, both of whom I usually enjoy reading, are generally not Trump fans but certainly aren’t #RESIST types.
I don’t really “like” or “dislike” Trump. I ignore most of his Twitter trolling. I like the tax cuts and deregulation he signed / sponsored.
I used to read the Weekly Standard and despised what they became – Bomb Everyone, then Let Them Move Here. I made no sense and was in no way conservative. And they couldn’t restrained their dislike of Trump to specific issues – they let it become the hatred of DC insiders against an outsider disrupting their cushy gigs. I’m glad the are gone and their shitstain leader thoroughly discredited.
I dislike him, but I dislike every president.
I think that’s the difference.
People who are used to worshipping the cult of presidency think his brashness is a huge deal. Meh. For me, it’s just run of the mill the way things are. I’ve always hated our presidents and more importantly they have about 10X the power they ought to have.
And you don’t pretend that other presidents are somehow these upright paragons of decency and civic minded virtue. They’re all politicians, so they’re all grifters. Trump is just unusually showy about it.
Plus, I do admit that I enjoy the fact that he pisses off the right people. It’s a guilty pleasure of mine. Fuck those people.
The Weekly Standard was the Jennifer Rubin of conservative publications. Good freaking riddance.
Baltimore’s Anti-Gun Government Offers Free Money to Gun Owners
But there’s a very amusing part of this story. Baltimore is offering $25 for every “hi-capacity” magazine.
And this creates a very interesting opportunity to make a quick buck since a quick online search reveals that one popular magazine (holds 30 rounds, so easily qualifies) can be purchased for about $11-$13.
GSL (an Illinois organization) regularly takes a collection of scrap arms, things like rusted up, old Montgomery Wards shotguns, from its members every time some Chicago area dingleberry would have one of these events.
They’d hand over a couple dozen pieces of junk, then take the proceeds for raffles, and youth training. They always made a big deal about publicizing it afterwards.
https://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2012/06/daniel-zimmerman/guns-save-life-uses-chicago-buyback-send-kids-nra-gun-camp/
I think it’s pretty common that a decent chunk of those “buyback guns” are inoperable relics, or even crudely fashioned fake guns.
It’s nice to know that the perpetually broke Baltimore has money to spend on stupidity.
OT: I never want to hear another word about Idris Elba as Bond after this bit of “if you haven’t done anything wrong, you have nothing to fear. Then again, maybe a middling bureaucrat snooping in on everyone else’s business is just up his alley.
Reading that shit made me sad. He’s a pretty good actor, so I’m going to still watch his shit. But how clueless can you be especially a man in his position, to not realize that the whole #metoo movement has been weaponized?
to not realize that the whole #metoo movement has been weaponized
Until he’s the target. Then, it will be totally different.
Dude couldn’t even manage a Dunder-Mifflin office.
He sucks.
At this point, anything said to the media beyond “No comment” is just asking for trouble.
“But–!”
“Talk to my lawyer.”
I just got an email from GOA announcing that they are filing a lawsuit over the bump stock ban.
Good use of funds.
Where’s the NRA’s bitch ass?
Making cool videos.
Making more trite Dana Loesch videos and sucking up to cops, as usual. (Still would, though, oh my god I would).
Dana’s a reason the hot/crazy scale exists. No.
I might regret it later, but fortune favors the bold.
Second.
Thirded?
Didn’t they support this?
Fucking commies.
I don’t know what the fuck a bump stock is and I ignore all news about this, but still. It’s the principle.
Hoarding donations and agreeing with the ban?
I also had to un-follow Colion Noir on Twitter because he’s sooooo fucking boring and self-serious.
Donated
THAT MAKE STEVE SMITH HAPPY.
And there’s this:
Donated. Not as much as I gave to Glibs (which itself wasn’t a lot) but every bit helps.
*wanders off to the Institute for Justice webpage*
Even though I just spent an obscene amount of money for this, I suppose I’ll throw a bone.
Nice!
You’re like the perfect woman.
Except for the fact that I don’t have the first clue about keeping house. I hear tell dudes like chicks who can keep house.
Do you think you could keep a van?
Does it have floor-to-ceiling shag carpet?
(asking because I bought a new vacuum a couple months ago and it’s still in its box)
Look, alls I need you to do is hose it down once a month. Nothing fancy. Are you in or not?
Geeze…that sounds like a lot of work
You know what? It’s your loss. There’s a reason they say that once you go into the van, you never come back.
Meh, as long as you as fine as I am living in the filth no problem.
(also, I would never make it onto one of Q’s boob lists)
More than a handful is a waste
Lol. We dig you as you are KK. Heavily armed and everything!
It’s nuts that we live in a time when celebrating the demise of the Weekly Standard and questioning FBI practices gets you labeled a “Trumpist” by people who work at CATO. People have lost the plot.
Social media has killed principles.
Julian Sanchez is to civil liberties what cancer is to good health
CATO still has some really good, principled writers, such as Ilya Shapiro (a libertarian lawyer), Roger Pilon, Chris Edwards, and Vanessa Calder Brown (who is both smart and pretty!). They have a wealth of good policy proposals and information at downsizingthefederalgovernment.org.
I’m sad Gene Healy kinda has a case of TDS – every article I’ve seen from him has been about how Trump should be impeached (he is the author of the Cult of the Presidency, a great book that I own, and he was critical of Obama, but he never once entertained the thought of having Obama impeached).
But overall I agree with you. I was kinda taken aback by Ken White’s anti-Rand-Paul quote. Yeah, I get it, Ken, Paul is an icky right-libertarian who sometimes agrees with Trump. But how the hell could you, a supposed libertarian, possibly defend TWS?
I don’t think Ken has ever referred to himself as libertarian. I’m too lazy to look it up but I know of at least one time he referred to himself as a moderate liberal.
On the other hand, Marc Randazza refers to himself as a screaming liberal and is a serious defender of 1A.
My Pa says he would have replaced the glitter with spray paint.
https://youtu.be/xoxhDk-hwuo
I’d like to replace it with hand grenades.
Other (non-lethal, MS!!) options:
air horn
woman screaming bloody murder on a loop
dogs barking aggressively on a loop
siren on a loop
auto-dial 911 over and over and over (that one may be lethal, come to think of it)
taser
add a speaker and have it do the mission impossible “this package will self destruct”
Maybe some Propylene glycol and a heating element to make it start smoking for added effect
OK, how about a flash bang followed by a canister of tear gas?
Powdered depleted uranium.
Gives that little extra oooomph for the pranksters that want their work to say “I care.”
The fart spray was a nice touch. Well designed.

I knew it was about a cat before I clicked, so fuck you.
I hate that someone was paid anything of value to write that story. What was the dispute over the cat? My hunch is that something was done to the cat. Or the ex goaded her into the action by claiming he did something to the cat. And I’m unaware of many married dudes communicating with their exes who aren’t scumbags.
My verdict is – beating likely earned.
Dont act so smug. Its in the link.

Is it near a water feature?
It wouldn’t matter to them, I suspect, if I parked my van down by the river or not. There aren’t any windows.
Does it need new window treatments?

Took care of some business and finished early. In a part of LA I barely ever get to. Now I’m tucked in at my 5th favorite Mexican joint about to mash a chicharron burrito and a Pacifico.

My visits to Santa Fe have really driven my cravings for the Mexican foodz. Pork tamales, especially. Sadly, despite our ginormous immigrant population, DC is an ethnic food black hole where tasty international dishes go to die.
So….like a……desert ?
I agree. DC is a black hole.
Northern NM cuisine is unlike that of anywhere else. It’s not “Mexican” food, it’s “New Mexican”, the combination of Mexican and Indian. Tamales and sopapillas are firmly in the latter influence.
Agreed.
Back In The Day™, (okay, it was November of 2002 to be more precise), some friends and the spousal unit and I spent a couple of weeks kicking around northern New Mexico, and there was this one restaurant called “The Old Mexico Grill” in Santa Fe which ceased operating about a year after we found it. We ate there several times. Some of the best meals I’ve ever had in my life, but for some reason, the owners couldn’t see their way forward in Santa Fe, shuttered the place and went back to Mexico.
I grieve over stuff like that. They introduced me to elevated examples of the best of northern NM cuisine, and they go bust. Goddamn it.
Whatever its origins, the food up there is just outstanding. I took my friend that lives there to a very fancy place for her birthday. Though it didn’t have specifically NM cuisine, it catered to all the rich Texans that seem to inhabit the city, so there was lots of meat to choose from.
Las Fuentes or GTFO. It’s in Reseda.
Noted and bookmarked. Steak nachos + salsa bar next time I drive by.
Bookmarked. Will try it some time when I’m on that side of the 405.
No mariscos guillen today?
I was in Van Nuys. I don’t get up there too often. But yes, Mariscos Guillen in Hawthorne, or even better La Playita/Mariscos Guillen in Venice. Bestest chicharron in LA.
Dollar ceviche is really pushing it.

Green Bay police chief makes anti-theft cardboard cut-out . Hilarity ensues.
That’s better writing than usual for the Press Gazette.
Hmm, I just saw a Facebook comment (!) which said that, if abortion is a sin, it cannot be outlawed, because to do so would violate the Anti-Establishment Clause. Of course, this comment had hundreds of likes/loves.
In other news, laws against murder and theft are unconstitutional.
That’s a special kind of stupid.
I’m willing to bet the anti-establishment clause has been used by actual judges to do various things far stupider.
I would imagine that this person thinks lying to the FBI is a high crime itself. And, I have it on “good Authority” that lying is a sin, soooo…..
If you guys are fucking with me, you’ll end up in my van.

I love the Surgery Center of OK
https://surgerycenterok.com/blog/10-lessons-from-running-a-cash-based-asc/
I’m shocked that the government or pro-universal health care haven’t shut them down yet. The idea that we can save on health costs if we don’t have a transparent pricing mechanism and that a third party (generally the government) be made to pay for services is a ludicrous idea.
60 minutes did a spot on them a couple years ago, and like you, I thought that was all the attention they needed to get closed down.
It’s funny: I see the same rhetoric from the left that I see from the right, and that I see from libertarians. “Trump ripped off the masks—but of the other guys.” “The other guys only know one thing: projection.” Etc.
I feel like I’M the one being gaslighted. Or am I legitimately crazy? Every day I’m reading accusations from people, toward others, that apply much better to themselves. But maybe I’m just crazy.
Idk why I went looking for that anti-RandPaul PopeHat tweet. I think I need to be institutionalized now.
Ken White is a garbage person.
I think he might just be unstable.
I think you are correct. There seems to be a lot of that going around these days.
I was informed by another glib that this is indeed the case, and that he has in fact written about it before. I don’t if it’s a get-out-of-being-a-jerk card, but it is what it is.
He was hospitalized for depression several years ago and struggles with it.
Striving for internet fame is probably not a great life choice in that case.
I get he’s got issues and says a lot of jerky authoritarian things, but I have a hard time panning him because of what happened over at TOS.
What did happen? I don’t believe I’ve ever heard the backstory here.
I publicly offered to buy him a steak dinner for that. He probably played a role in getting the subpoenas rescinded.
Of course, I’m not the kind of person he would want to dine with.
When Dread Pirate Roberts was sentenced, there were comments to the effect that the judge should be tossed into a woodchipper a la Fargo. There were a few other suggestions. Somebody from the justice department (can’t remember his name and I am lazy) sent Reasons subpoenas demanding six commenters’ names and IP addresses. Ken stepped in and helped those commenters escape relatively unscathed from the DOJ.
Here’s a starting point:
https://www.popehat.com/2015/06/11/media-coverage-of-the-reason-debacle/
Preet Bahara, Grade-A asshole
I knew about Preet and the whole woodchipper story. Well, not the whole story, I didn’t know Ken was the White Knight.
Or…maybe I just forgot. If I ask you for the whole Popehat backstory again a year or so from now, don’t be mad. My memory is shit.
IIRC he offered to defend those wicked, wicked people who said mean things about the good judge in that case.
Didn’t he actually spend time in a mental hospital?
Yeah. Voluntary. I actually appreciate that he shared his experience publicly; it could help other people.
My issue is how he treats people he disagrees with. It’s unnecessarily dickish at times.
says it better than I did.
I feel bad for him.
He seems like he could have been a perfectly decent person for most of his life.
Whoring for retweets destroys your soul, apparently.
I think he wants to be a good person, but I don’t know that he’s ever been good at it.
Remember, he was a prosecutor, and he still has a very cop attitude. Whether he got that from the job, or he took that job because ohe already had that attitude I don’t know.
Federal prosecutor is a career stepping stone. He walked away from it, so he’s better than 99% of the people who take the job (IMO).
I must have missed when he went off the rails, I follow his tweets and some are informative, others sad attempts at humor (he’s got a wannabe Iowahawk complex) but I can’t recall any straight up stupid shit.
He got his fame from being insulting to jerks during the Oatmeal v. Funnyjunk brouhaha. Now he’s trying to make a career out of “snort my taint.”
You’re not crazy, but the voices in your head might be lying to you.
You aren’t crazy.
It’s an extremely frustrating phenomenon and a big reason we can’t make any progress.
Most people seem to want the police state, they just want the boot crushing the throats of the other side. But that’s not very American, and since both sides consider themselves patriots, they refuse to see that in themselves. Thus, both major TEAMs end up hurling accusations of projection at the other side, and both are correct.
Libertarians who actually argue from first principles don’t fit this mold, but since people often see things as us v. them we get lumped in with those “others” who are guilty of projecting. We project too, but our issue is that we do it by assuming other people argue in good faith or actually care about principles when they usually don’t.
What good is all that power if you can’t use it?
They’ve got him this time…
https://newrepublic.com/article/152717/robert-muellers-legal-masterpiece
I’m going to say this: a two year investigation, millions of dollars down the drain and only a few “lying to FBI” convictions doesn’t look like a masterpiece.
I loathe the very idea that a prosecutor should be engaging in anything that could be considered a “legal masterpiece.” Because what that phrase really means is twisting and reinterpreting the laws to attack someone you can’t get at through already accepted practices. I mean, some may argue its justified in going after some mob boss. Engaging in cheap tricks to go after a democratically elected president? That people cheer this is rather asinine. Strangely, I see very few legal scholars raising the sorts of concerns they did with Starr who led a far more mundane investigation by comparison.
A step further – it really doesn’t take any cleverness on the part of prosecutors to pull off what the Mueller team is doing. It only takes a lack of shame. We have decades of rulings from judges on the left and right deferring to shady prosecutorial tactics. If a prosecutor wants to stretch or even completely alter the law to go after someone, judges have been pretty lenient in allowing them to do so. It’s how you end up with an investigation into a major presidential candidate based on a law that hasn’t been enforced in two and a half centuries, and unprcedented and ridiculous charges against people who you know will never step foot into a courtroom on American soil.
And they have not won convictions in court. They have trumped up charges that would amount to life in prison and used that to extort a plea deal. That might be what counts as fine lawyering in the DOJ, but don’t count on a bunch of libertarians having a positive impression.
I’m going to say if someone went after Hillary with the ferocity, thoroughness, and budget of Mueller, then Hillary would be in jail. So would Obama. So would just about anybody.
They misspelled ‘banana republic travesty’
If by “masterpiece” they mean “work of art”, I agree.
For once I was ahead of the curve and donated before Mighty ZARDOZ had to threaten me with grain slavery!

Didn’t I donate recently? I cant remember. I think it was recently. But then I can barely keep up with what day of the week it is. I will check.
I need to get some more submissions going. I have written and now that the chiggers are gone I will go take the photos that it needs.

Just saying…
Cool, and again at 10:15. Geez I love that movie but will they inanity-profanity it? I really need to get it on hard media.
I don’t think ifc edits anything.
$%^*!! You beat me to it. You #$%%$##!!
Apparently, you’re not IFC.
?
They didn’t before they started running commercials. I haven’t watched since then, so I don’t know.
I remember when AMC started running commercials to pay for the (in my mind) non-classic; i.e. newer, movies they started playing. I was so pissed I even sent them a sternly worded email. And haven’t watched a minute since.
I see TCM is moving into the 70’s; and even 80’s movies I think? If they wreck that channel I might have to word an even more unpleasant email.
Of course, I hope to unplug in the next month or so, so fuck it.
TCM was showing 80s movies in its first year as a channel.
If you really want to see a sense of entitlement, read the TCM discussion forums. They ran a night of movies last week honoring films named to the National Film Registry this year, and you should hear the caterwauling for their having aired My Fair Lady.
I’m pretty sure they don’t edit anything
Gonna DVR the later showing, so we’ll see.
Ally Sheedy was adorable.
One $20 or $40 donation(I can’t remember, too stoned at the time) and one STEVE SMITH SAY RELAX baseball T that my friends, knowing my bizarre sense of humor, have refused to inquire about.

Genetic genealogy is really, really hard. Even for my logical brain. However, I have a new piece of info on my brother’s birth parents. One of them (probably the father) was…get this…most likely Canadian. LOL.
Anyway, I know the names of one set of his grandparents, and I’m very sure these were his maternal grandparents, which is good news. If the father wasn’t even aware she was pregnant, finding info via his father’s family (short of a sibling or aunt/uncle DNA match) would be impossible.
I’m getting more confident that the woman whose obit I found was his birth mother. Still no word from her daughter to whom I sent a Facederp message.
As a Canadian, I’m not grokking why this is funny. Oh well.
My mom has dine a Herculean amount of work to research family history and genealogy. Unfortunately she has yet to find a way to compile it in a chronological, coherent format to make it relatable. Ancestry.com does a decent job but it still fails to tell the whole story in light of the amount of information she has found.
My paternal grandparents were (((Canadian))).
BTW, y’all need to Google Map “Towner County, ND’ – that’s where my brother’s mother (or possibly father) was from. Holy fuck.
Anyway – I just grokked that a 1970 Grand Forks, ND phone book might give me my answer. Looks like the Library of Congress only has 1969 and 1971. My brother was born in 71, so that might work too, but I have a suspicion (based on who I think the mother might be), that she didn’t stick around Grand Forks for very long after my brother was born.
I’ve spent most of my life within an hour of Grand Forks. I go (near) there every Mon-Thur for work. And I currently live 90 minutes or so away from Towner county. I’d love to help you if I can.
OoooohhhH! If any of the local libraries has a Grand Forks phone book for 1970, I have a name to look up (see below)! My brother’s mother gave birth to him in Grand Forks, so I’m hoping she was living there for a period of time beforehand.
Here’s a perhaps too esoteric question – do you know where kids from northern Towner (like, Sarles area) would have gone to high school in the 1960’s? I see there is a high school in Rocklake, but I have no idea how old it is. I have found a couple of intriguing names in the Cando yearbook from 1961 on Ancestry, but I think that might have been too far away from Sarles.
It would be amazing if you could check out the phone book thing! The name is Nell or Nellie or Nellie Mae Nelson. If she’s not in there, I may be barking up the wrong tree and need to check out some of her siblings instead.
I’m pretty sure you start with his adopted birth cert. They usually had a first cert. with the mom’s name and father’s (if it was given,) and then issue a modified one to the adoptive parents with their names on it. Hall of records for any child born that day in that hospital and you have names. At least that’s how I’ve seen it done.
No info in the birth cert (just spoke with bro). I think it’s probably a reissue after he was adopted (he was up for adoption before he was born and brought home very soon after). The only info my parents were given was non-identifying personality stuff. I should look up ND adoption laws and see how hard it would be.
But the Ancestry DNA has brought me pretty far. I was very excited to even have the names of his grandparents. Unfortunately for my research, they had 8 kids, so I have to eliminate them one by one.
Yeah, that’s normal, but there’s another birth certificate with the real info filed that day (at least usually. Sometimes in very rural areas they might not have done that) it ought to be filed at the hall of records for that hospital. There will be two babys for that day and time. One will be the real one and the other will be the adopted one. I’ve seen this work three times with 60s and 70s births in the midwest.
I’ll give it a try! Thanks!
Looks like there were two major hospitals in Grand Forks in the early 70’s. They merged into the same company in 1971 – same year my brother was born.
The two old hospitals I know of were St. Michael’s and Deaconess. Growing up, the only one was United, which is now called Altru.
FYI: gotta get to bed. I’ll start sleuthing tomorrow.
My street has more people than that whole county. People there probably have every tidbit of history ever even remotely related. Prolly not easy to pry it out of them, though. At least it’ll be easy to determine the hospital, right?
Well, the mother was in Grand Forks when she gave birth, so I am going to start there.
But you bring up an interesting point about people knowing each other. Mike, if you ever run into any elderly folks from Towner (specifically the northern part of the county), I wonder if they know the Nelson and/or Smerer families? Nelson is a very common name, I know. Nell Nelson’s parents names were Arthur and Lottie (Smerer). Nell’s obit states she was born in Sarles.
Also, Arthur was 20 years older than Lottie. His birth name was Arthur Johnson, but his father left or died when he was young and his mother remarried a guy named Nelson, so he changed his name.
Nelson is extremely common around here. However, Smerer is a new one to me. To answer a question form above, Rock Lake would have been around in the ’60’s. Sarles quite likely had it’s own school back then. I can look into that more for you.
If you want to take this offline, email me at my handle at hughes . net
I will definitely head to the GF library. And I’ll look into schools in Towner Co. Email me and I’ll do everything I can. I love genealogy as well as a good detective story. I’m looking forward to doing what I can!
Huh.
That whole county’s very close to many places in Manitoba where one of my wife’s uncles worked and ultimately retired in. Morris, Brandon, Souris, Winkler, Morden, Manitou, Neepawa . . . good times, good times.
Well, bonus day is Friday. . .
I’m happy to temporarily suspend my lurking to drop a crisp 20 into the pot. You guys keep me entertained when I’m not at work… Or when I’m on the can at work. 20 bucks is 20 bucks. Use it wisely!
Done. And I will try to write more articles next year.
