Never understood how this can stand. If you had a software glitch that is your problem pay up
If gambling houses were in the business of paying out they wouldn’t be there. They are there to take fool’s money, not give them money.
I know but were i a judge i would make em pay.
Yup., A bet happens when two parties agree to it. For one party to later say that THEIR software, which THEY wrote, accidentally caused them to notify you erroneously that you won, is obviously welchery. I’d like to see punitive damages for even attempting this. Kinda the way gaming cheats are treated extra harshly in Nevada, disproportionately to the damage they cause, to deter others from even trying.

You busted up a dorm party and made them pour out the booze?
The RA’s I had in one dorm were the most authoritarian group of assholes I’ve met. They’d hang out at the front desk on weekend nights and search any and all backpacks/book bags/duffel bags. This is where North Dakota winters come in handy…it’s fairly simple to hide a 750 under a winter coat.

So, where are all the Black Friday deals?
Not having to deal with co-workers because they took the day off so the office is still dead silent at 8am – that’s worth more than any discount or running of the rabid shoppers.
Alabama?
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6420725/1-teen-dead-2-injured-Alabama-mall-shooting.html
At the breweries.
I’m relieved and pleased to see the world is still spinning merrily along, after a brief respite, yesterday. Google news is showing me a bunch of stories about how “Trump’s Tariffs” are going to destroy the grand American tradition of loading up on cheap Chinese crap on Black Friday.
I thought cheap Chinese crap was, like, the root of everything wrong with the 21st century. I can’t keep up.
Trump seems to be using tariffs as a negotiating tool, rather than imposing tariffs because he likes them. Sometimes I have to look past his rhetoric at the things he is doing. “Lower your tariffs on us, and we’ll lower them for you”, is something he says, which is a different attitude than, “We will impose tariffs ’cause Murica.”
Wow, re: the blackjack welchers
“Well, how ’bout £60,000, instead of the £1.whatever you were expecting?”
What would you do? With the way the courts are today (actually, how are the courts in the UK?), it might be safer to take the £60 grand rather than face the possibility that the judge decides you owe the other guy.
That is my thought too. Most countries have a law saying that gambling houses aren’t liable for ‘glitches’ and I’m sure with a 1 million pound budget that their software engineers could come up with something, even if it wasn’t a glitch.
Given the smalle size and the long history of culinary use – what is the traditional container for poppy seeds from antiquity?
Hamentashen.
Before it gets there. It has to be carried in something between the seed pod and the baking oven.
I’m likely to go with the safe bet of glazed clay pots.
Orphans with tweezers, it’s like you don’t even Slave bro
Are you writing an historical novel?
No, it’s fantasy, but my first question usually begins with “How was this usually done and why” before I deviate. The narrator is a merchant who arrived in an area that produces poppy and also needs to provision his ships.
While looking at historical data to get some idea of what the narrator’s cargo might be worth, I stumbled onto an interesting fact. During the first few decades after its introduction to England, tea could be worth up to twice its weight in silver.

***Expat Thanksgiving was very strange. Small affair, good Turkey, couple of good friends but most are waiting for a shindig this Saturday that I was too slow to pick up a ticket. No biggie. $40 buffet. I eat like a 12-year-old girl and I hate buffets because I can never eat enough to make my money back.
One of my more aspie friends was talking about waterboarding for some reason. He said it wasn’t a big deal. Having done it once (by a fucking crazy kinda-ex in college who was into shit like that) I told him he was an idiot. So I asked my friend/bar owner if we could somehow set up a waterboarding rig.
So we did! I lasted 15 seconds the first time, which I rewarded with a free Long Island Iced Tea. The second time I gutted out 20 seconds. That shit is deeply, deeply unpleasant. I can’t even fathom a minute at a time.
***There is no way that the Japanese are going to apologize now. Let’s say a comfort woman was 15 in 1945. She’d be 88 today.
Only have to stonewall for a decade or two more until there’s no real living memory.
***The shittiest thing about teaching is when you hate a student. Not just angry that they did something shitty, but that they’ve done shitty things so many times that you know they’re actual, legit pieces of shit who will most likely grow up to be larger logs of excrement. Fuck those parents, but I never meet them. I don’t have any kids like that now, but some are veeeery borderline with me at the moment.
This week and especially today I have had many Not Sure Fry memes involving me actually squinting and thinking “Not sure if poor English…or actually functionally retarded.”
Disclaimer: Almost all of my kids are lovely.
***Hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving! And to the dude (sorry, I forget who) who had to host 30 asshole guests…well. At least it’s over now.
So, I gather drinking was involved, but why would you do it? Did the guy who thought it was no big deal go a round or what?
Yeah, that was the deal. Me, aspie, other friend and also the owner took turns.
I was happy for the earned free drink, but I’m just weird like that. As long as I know something won’t kill me or have lasting damage, I’m pretty much good to go. I like collecting experiences. If our Middle Eastern policy or torture comes up in conversation, I am now (well, I was also able to in 2006) to speak intelligently from personal knowledge. I think most of us do this with food or travel, so I just see it as an extension of that. I’ve got lots of little moments like this.
It’s also true that I am a man, and men are dumb. I wanted to “win.” When the owner got 20 seconds I had to try again and at least match him, successfully.
I’d like to an Oak Rule, not quite as sturdy as Iron, but pretty damn close, that I’ve kicked around for a decade or so: Boys are stupid; girls are crazy.
Louis CK has it summed up better than I could.
It’s also true that I am a man, and men are dumb.
We are?
Dumb as in “Hold my beer” behavior.
Yeah, and you haven’t seen cutting edge stupid until you’ve spent a few years in the US Marine Infantry. They wear stupid like a badge.
It’s either that or face up to the fact that they joined the marine corps.
Sounds familiar.
In my limited experience, if the kid is a total piece of shit, a (or both) parent’s influence is involved somehow.
I agree absolutely 100%. If you let your kids act like that around other kids or especially teachers *that their parents are explicitly paying for the service that I’m providing* then you know there zero boundaries and shitty or lazy parents.
What else do you do like a 12-year-old girl? 😉

Shapiro interviews Harper. Very interesting. He crystallizes the current trade issues and immigration very well.
Disagree with some of his takes about libertarians but good stuff.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVNw03gyLmk
In this video, Shapiro asks Tucker Carlson if he would ban self-driving vehicles. Carlson affirms he would “in a second” in order to protect driving jobs.
Tucker is pretty good on opposing leftist kulturkampf but he has some retarded populist economic impulses.
Yes he does.
That is pretty damning. At least he is honest?
He is honest but he has a bit of a misguided pink streak.
He’s a right-leaning central planner but a central planner none-the-less
Ho-Le shit.
“Half the world was under communism because they didn’t manage the transition form an agrarian economy to an industrial one.”
Did Tucker grow up in Flint? He has a hard-on for Teddy Roosevelt too.
Tucker’s ideology seems to revovle around defending “Joe six-pack.” So he’s good on culture, war, etc. But a nightmare on free trade and economics. Ironically his prescriptions would keep Joe six-pack stuck in the 20th century.
…and I believe that’s his schtick 100%
Joe Sixpack would take any point in the 20th century over where we are now in the 21st century.
In the comments, someone claims that Carlson has “woken up” to the supposed benefits of fascism (at least, that is what I infer from the comment).
I watched as some people that I follow turned decidedly against Free Trade, and are,now turning against the Free Market. “Capitalism is based on debt”, or something like that. People who claim to have studied Austrian Trade Theory. Not a single mention of fractional-reserve banking, however.
The comments are quite repulsive. Most somehow thought Tucker got the better of that exchange.
Scientists want everyone to have his DNA collected and stored in a giant database, which they claim would be easier to regulate.
Sort of like how SSNs would never be used for anything other than retirement benefits?
“easier to regulate.”

Brasidas’ Black Friday tale of woe:
22016, Walmart Home Office:
Dan: Brasidas, can you run the Black Friday logistics report when I’m out this week?
Brasidas: Sure.
Later that week:
Random Electronics buyer: Hey, where is Dan?
Brasidas: Vacation all this week.

Brasidas: Ok, how much?
REB: About $75k retail.
Brasidas: Oh, that’s rounding error. No big deal.

Brasidas prepares an emailed report, makes a footnote about the small change in Puerto Rico numbers, hits send, and heads for the door.

*claps like a five-dollar hooer*
It’s all good. My store management couldn’t find the OtterBox cases, or the Netgear Arlos till about 7 PM, and left me on a line where we sold all of 11 units of the deal item, rather than pulling it back to electronics and let them deal with it, and let me help them find the stuff. Then the Market APM stayed for our entire sale, and was an impediment to the plan, and the Market Manager showed up at 8:30 to make sure that his pet end caps (in our market, all of them) were correctly done. After one hour of cleanup (since we have to run Supervisor lunches at around 7, on a 2-12 shift).
What could possibly go wrong?
Spraying sun-dimming chemicals high above the Earth to slow global warming could be “remarkably inexpensive”, costing about $2.25 billion a year over a 15-year period, according to a study by U.S. scientists.
Some researchers say the geo-engineering technique known as stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI) could limit rising temperatures that are causing climate change.
As yet unproven and hypothetical, it would involve the use of huge hoses, cannons or specially designed aircraft to spray large quantities of sulphate particles into the upper layer of the atmosphere to act as a reflective barrier against sunlight.
——–
There are risks to such unproven potential technologies. Scientists have said SAI could result in negative consequences such as causing droughts or extreme weather in other parts of the world, harm crop yields as well as potential public health and governance issues.
It also does not address the issue of rising carbon dioxide emissions, the main greenhouse gas blamed for global warming.
Science to the rescue!
I, too, have the uncanny knack of taking the wrong action at exactly the wrong time.
There have been some real doozies of bad ideas throughout history but it is worth noting that the worst of the worst all seem to be connected to the global warming hoax.
CO2 is not the main greenhouse gas, there is no statistically significant warming, there is no increase in CO2 emissions in developed nations – in fact, the opposite. What a bunch of sleazy grifters.
What I find funny is the loudest watermelons are always the least likely to restrain any of their own behaviors to ‘save the planet.’ Poor people and the shrinking middle class should have to live with less while they jet off to Europe or the South Pacific so they can post dazzling Instagram pics about what’s at stake

“Refugee acquitted of rape ‘as he has different cultural norms’ – His female victim attempted suicide
A refugee from Bangladesh was tried by a French court and was acquitted of the rape of a high school girl. The verdict was handed down yesterday.
The young man also sexually assaulted another young girl. He was charged with both cases but acquitted of the rape.
According to the defense the refugee has ‘different cultural norms’ or ‘cultural codes’ and could have misinterpreted the contact with the girl.
The refugee is acquitted of the rape but sentenced to two years in prison as a suspended sentence for the sexual assault of the first victim.
He will be registered in the sex offender file, according to the court’s decision.”
https://voiceofeurope.com/2018/11/refugee-acquitted-of-rape-as-he-has-different-cultural-norms-his-female-victim-attempted-suicide/
They’ve already given “refugees” the inch and they can’t wait to give them the mile.
I see absolutely no way that the lack of cultural assimilation could end without some dark shit happening. Scenarios I can see occurring on both sides.
Well, it’s clear the “refugees” are already enacting their Dark Shit policy of encroachment. It will get uglier or there will be a no-joke V for Vendetta underground, French vigilante violence.
I find it very interesting and disturbing that this is a modern form of cultural and political invasion and a way of seizing power and land. And that the Euros are…literally letting them do it.
“Let both of us follow our own customs” comes to mind.
I got into it with my SoCon Dad a few days ago and found myself defending allowing [legal] immigration from Muslim countries. His idea was just a no-kidding constulitutional ban on Muslims entering the country. The immigration issue seems to bring out the worst inclinations on both sides.
H. Clinton says that Europe needs to put the breaks on immigration, because it is causing an increase in right-wingism.
Since the article doesnt say who rendered the verdict I will generalize also. ‘The French Court’ should be shot in the face with a large caliber pistol.
And the invader also.
According to the defense the refugee has ‘different cultural norms’ or ‘cultural codes’ and could have misinterpreted the contact with the girl.
If true, then those with “different cultural norms” should be returned to whatever shithole countries they came from. Everybody wins.
Why not apply the same standard to murder? Beheading infidels is just a cultural thing, not their fault they don’t know any better. Europe is so screwed. Charles Martel is rolling over in his grave.
“The CIA has a recording of a phone conversation in which Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman can be heard discussing how they should “silence Jamal Khashoggi as soon as possible,” according to a prominent Turkish columnist and journalist.
CIA Director Gina Haspel “signaled” the existence of the wiretapped phone call between Crown Prince Mohammed and his brother, Prince Khalid bin Salman, Abdulkadir Selvi wrote Thursday for English-language paper Hurriyet. Prince Khalid is the Saudi kingdom’s ambassador to the U.S.
“It is said that the crown prince gave an instruction to silence Jamal Khashoggi as soon as possible and this instruction was captured during the CIA wiretapping. The subsequent murder is the ultimate confirmation of this instruction,” Selvi wrote Thursday.
Selvi wrote that the members of the royal family talked about the “discomfort” Khashoggi, who was living in the U.S., caused by being critical in his writing.
Khashoggi, a dissident and Washington Post columnist, disappeared on Oct. 2 after he walked into the Saudi consulate in Istanbul for an appointment to obtain paperwork ahead of his wedding to a Turkish national. The Saudi royal court has maintained that it played no role in Khashoggi’s death. ”
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/cia-has-recording-of-saudi-crown-prince-suggesting-jamal-khashoggi-should-be-silenced-as-soon-as-possible
There is no way to know anything, since everyone involved is a professional liar.
That is my stance on this as well. Why are we hearing about this and whose interests does it serve? These things happen all the time to little people and nothing is done.
You are hearing about it because making some, from what I understand, Muslim Brotherhood POS being murdered a big deal helps the Resist crowd thwart Trump.
There seems to be some hope in driving a wedge between Trump and the Saudis. Khashoggi was a member, or supporter, or something, of the Muslim Brotherhood. He didnt have a green card, although he had a temporary work visa, if I remember right.
What makes me suspicious is the lock-step assertion by both “left” and “right” news sources that MbS was definitely, no doubt, you’re an idiot if you dont agree, Khashoggi’s murderer.
What worries me most is that MbS seems to be a pro-US reformer type. Why is Haspel (if this article is to be believed) releasing this information. These people are spooks, so moral intentions can legitimately be discounted, but where is the benefit to the US to revealing this information, if it is true?
I read this: https://nypost.com/2018/11/22/the-us-saudi-alliance-doesnt-need-mohammed-bin-salman/amp/
Which argues we don’t need MbS, which may be true, but doesn’t really give any argument for why that would be. It isn’t as though we’re going to drag the guy off to international court over this, he is a crown prince in a real monarchy and seems to basically run the country already. I don’t see the US giving up their head of state to anyone else to prosecute for war crimes and such, why would SA do any differently?
MbS cleared out all the anti-US faction in Saudi Arabia, and looks to be working toward some sort of conciliation with Israel.
“He must be stopped.”
Yeah, I keep trying not to come to that conclusion because I feel like a conspiracy theorist, but I can only keep coming back to ‘these people hate America, and they are in the highest offices of the bureaucracy’.
Oh, I gave up being a respectable “skeptic, but not a conspiracy theorist” a long time ago.
Not saying anyone else should.
“Trump is denying his own intelligence agencies!” Too bad Bush II didn’t believe CIA when they told him Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. It sure doesn’t take long for partisans to flip on something: “Comey evil, cost Hillary the election.” “Comey great man’ Trump evil for firing him.”
From the records of my memory:
Pres. Bush (doubtfully): “That’s it?”
Advisors: “It’s a slam-dunk, Mr. President.”
“Sessions LIED! He must recuse himself from all matters relating to Trump’s collusion with Russia!”
“HERO SESSIONS WAS ALL THAT PREVENTED TRUMP STRANGLING MUELLER WITH HIS BARE HANDS.”
“Will no one rid me of this troublesome journalist?”
“Wait, I didn’t mean it like that!” nudge nudge wink wink
Except this time there will be no penance.
I was with a very good friend of mine on Wednesday night. A man of great wealth and success. No doubt the wealthiest man I call a close friend. Net worth well over $100 million, and growing. Completely self made. An all around good guy too.
But I was beside myself when he said this Wednesday night: “The CIA is telling Trump that MBS gave the order and he still doesn’t believe it. What an idiot.”
I said “Not to defend Trump, but you know, maybe if we had been more skeptical of CIA propagan – or, I mean – intelligence, then maybe we wouldn’t have wasted trillions of dollars in Iraq.” (before this, he was talking about how the national debt was beginning to be a serious issue)
I was quite disappointed to find that this exceptional man I’ve looked up to my whole life was just as susceptible to CIA/mainstream media propaganda as any run-of-the-mill normie.
Politics has become fashion. And having the “right politics” is a way to distinguish your class status
Sadly this is true. He’s definitely still a conservative. But he has to hide it when he mingles with the other elites, especially since the two latest startups that he seeded are tech oriented and he’s finding himself mingling with a lot of Silicon Valley types.
I work in finance and the same ridiculousness has spread among people who view the Wall Street Journal as the Bible. It’s so weird and has everything to do with class status and absolutely nothing to do with policy.
I will note, though, that in this instance I don’t think the CIA would have an incentive to say that the Saudis killed the guy. I definitely think that the Saudis killed him. I just don’t understand why this is the incident that should end US-Saudi relations when the Saudis are literally committing genocide in Yemen.
I’m 100% in agreement with you.
This thread underscores that progressivism’s greatest defining quality is historical ignorance.

“I will never understand the term “Judeo-Christian civilization”. There has been a secular European civilization that Jews have contributed to massively. However, “Christian” civilization in Europe has generally led to pogroms, and burning their “Judeo”-neighbors at the stake”
Best response:
(((Road Bear Life)))
@bearshrugged
I think you forget Aquinas, Moore, Hutcheson, and many more, not including Christians like Locke, Mill, Hobbes, and others who thrived because of it. There were abuses, but literature thrived, as well as the arts. The Judeo-Chritian ethic exists independent of these abuses.
Molly Crabapple
Correct me if I’m wrong, as I’ve done not so much reading of the scholastics like Aquines, but wasn’t the Jewish philosopher they were most influenced by Maimonides, who lived in (and was forced to flee various) countries under Islamic rule?
No, you are correct, Molly. And that Jewish philosopher’s name was……Aristotle?
(In fact, there was a Muslim scholar, Averroes, who did reintroduce much of Aristotle’s work and Aquinas did read his writings to learn more about Aristotle)
Let’s forget about other giants like Gregor Mendel and modern beer itself as well.
In agreement with you of course, just man these guys really do love erasing history if it has to do with icky Christians.
I’m in agreement with her that Judaism also impacted Western Civilization (ergo the term “Judeo-Christian”) and that Islam had an indirect impact on Western Civilization, but yeah this just boils down to “ill icky Christians, let’s invent history”.
She also leaves out St. Augustine from the early Church. Not to mention Justin Martyr and many others. Where exactly does she think the notion of “natural rights” is derived from exactly?
I could’ve sworn somebody wrote it down on a scroll that got burned in the Library of Alexandria. Trust me.
“Leaves out” presupposes she even read it.
St. Augustine….and St. Jerome and Pope Gregory the Great – All made up the Three Doctors of The Church.
This all boils down to the fact that SJWs are so incredibly ignorant that they believe “Christian” is a byword for “white”.
Try and paint the picture for them that Islamic military expansionism was real and a concern for for European countries.
Their eyes fall out.
So they’ve never heard of Copts or Southern Baptists?
Did you hear we may soon get our first non-white pope? 😉
Wait, what about all those I-talians, Poles and the Argentine antipope?
“Did you hear we may soon get our first non-white pope?”
By far my favorite remark. Well done.
Ironically, of course, it is the Left within the Church that opposes the leading African contender for the pontificate. Cardinal Sarah is beloved by the traditionalists in the Church, while the Left within the Church champions an old white guy in Germany.
Never let facts and nuance get in the way of a good narravtive.
A bizarre narrative. This attempt to re-litigate reality is so strange.

Not sure I used the term micro-aggression, but it’s for sure a term 1) with no historical meaning 2) made up by Christians who want to paper over Jewish history 3) often used to attack Muslims.
Whaaaa? We’re not reading the same things I think.
Members of the Alt-Right who are religious reject the term “Judeo-Christian” because of the “Judeo” part.
Intersectionality?
It’s identity politics all the way down.
WSJ:
The president of George Soros’s philanthropy called for oversight of Facebook Inc. FB 1.80% by U.S. lawmakers after the social media company confirmed it hired a controversial public relations outfit to research the billionaire financier.
Facebook’s departing policy and communications chief, Elliot Schrage, this week took responsibility for the hiring of Definers Public Affairs, a consulting firm and opposition-research firm that Facebook tasked with scrutinizing detractors. “I knew and approved of the decision to hire Definers and similar firms,” Mr. Schrage said in an internal post, responding to a New York Times article last week that detailed Facebook’s hiring of Definers.
Mr. Schrage also said Facebook asked Definers to look into Mr. Soros after the liberal philanthropist called internet “monopolies” a “menace” in a January speech at the World Economic Forum. “We had not heard such criticism from him before and wanted to determine if he had any financial motivation,” Mr. Schrage wrote. “Definers researched this using public information.”
A well known “financier” (don’t say market manipulator) who has made billions trading on news-related market swings starts badmouthing you at Davos, and you wonder if he’s shorting your stock. Totally inexplicable and uncalled for. Definitely something which demands a government takeover. Because that wouldn’t tank the stock, or anything.
Not all rich people involved in politics can be criticized. Especially not if they have the “right” politics

“Witch population doubles as millennials cast off Christianity
If you were interested in witchcraft in 1692, you probably would have been jailed or burned at the stake. If you’re interested in witchcraft in 2018, you are probably an Instagram influencer.
From crystal subscription boxes to astrologist-created lip balm, the metaphysical has gone mainstream. Millennials today know more about chakras than your kooky New Age aunt. That’s why it’s no surprise that the generation that is blamed for killing everything is actually bringing popularity to centuries-old practices.
According to the Pew Research Center, about 1.5 million Americans identify as Wiccan or pagan. A decade ago, that number was closer to 700,000. Presbyterians, by comparison, have about 1.4 million votaries.”

I’m going to take a different tack.
This is a good thing, it would be better (imo) if they were Christians, but embracing some sort of belief system may be better for them than otherwise.
I would agree that it would be good for them to embrace anything outside of the material, but I think witchcraft is just an attempt at trolling. Especially since these witches are often just remarking on current politics more than anything (casting spells on Kavanaugh, etc.). Their faith remains politics. The guise, in this instance, is witchcraft.
I would certainly question how many of the million+ witches and pagans really believe and treat it like a religion and not a juvenile attempt to troll, but there must be some serious adherent who try to better their spiritual lives. I think it would be unfair to paint them all as casting hexing on Kav. just because soem are idiots. In the same way I don’t like being associated with Christians who happen to be idiots.
Agreed. I hope witchcraft does provide these people with some sense of religiosity or something beyond the material world (and I can’t believe I just typed, because we live in profoundly stupid times)
I have a friend who identifies as a witch. She is small business owner (new age crystals, herbal remedies, dog food ) freedom lover, gun lover, political conservative.
Not a combo I would have expected. Sure, I roll my eyes at her witchy Facebook posts, but she is sincere in her beliefs.
I once had a girlfriend who considered herself to be a “white witch”, apparently one that only uses spells and charms for good. Yes, she was fairly crazy, but she was able to demonstrate some good magic in the sack.
And I respect that. Maybe I painted witches (?) with a broad brush. Every time I read about them in the news its usually them using witchcraft as a guise to express their true faith, which is politics.
I have a character who a libertarian venture capitalist/corporate hammer who is pagan. Not real life, sure, but infinite possibilities in infinite combinations, right?
You don’t burn witches, you hang them.
I thought you weighed them against a duck?
Well, that is how they determined if the accused were are actually a witch in the Old Country. Granted, the inhabitants in that time and place burned their witches.
The year “1692”, however, indicated to me a reference to the Salem Witch Trials, which resulted in the very American punishment of hanging.
/whendidIbecomeanannoyingpedantforpetessake
The reason The British and the British colonies hanged witches was because of Henry VIII. Once the crown because the head of the church, witchcraft became a crime against the crown, and hanging was the more traditional punishment for crimes against th crown. This is why Joan got burned and the salem ‘witches’ hanged.
“I’m ‘Enary the Aith, I am,
‘Enary the Aith I am, I am
I got ‘exed by the witch next door,
‘ad ‘er, ‘anged and she wont ‘ex, no more…”
I feel like I’m taking crazy pills. How do people fall for this shit? It’s a fad, idiots.
WSJ link for those who can get through the paywall.
In the Facebook memo, Mr. Schrage said the company asked Definers to explore the link between an anti-Facebook group called Freedom from Facebook and Mr. Soros. Definers “prepared documents and distributed these to the press to show that this was not simply a spontaneous grass roots movement,” the memo said.
Mr. Schrage added: “Some of this work is being characterized as opposition research, but I believe it would be irresponsible and unprofessional for us not to understand the backgrounds and potential conflicts of interest of our critics.”
I’m not on the Soros-is-the-Devil bandwagon, but I certainly cannot fault anybody who thinks it’s a good idea to keep tabs on what the fuck he’s up to. Especially if you think he’s putting your company in play.
https://blogs.spectator.co.uk/2018/11/scrapping-juries-in-rape-trials-would-be-a-mistake/
Eliminating due process, because “progress” or something
FTA:
“Coffey’s argument is that ‘juries view evidence through the lens of prevailing stereotypes shared with the wider community.’ As a result, she says, ‘the most common cause of unsuccessful prosecutions in rape prosecutions is jury acquittal’. Her suggestions to resolve this include the idea that jurors in rape cases should be ‘vetted for preconceived bias.’ Another is that they should be abolished altogether in rape cases.”
Why is it that “progress” always seems like going back in time three hundred years ago?
Do I need to post the Calvin Coolidge quote?
The left declared all out war on due process in 2008.
The original Dungeons and Dragons rules had it right: in this world, there is not a struggle between “Good and Evil”, but between “Law and Chaos”.
Uh… isn’t there already a jury selection procedure where they try to weed out people who would not convict under any circumstances? I’m guessing she’d want a slightly more robust system, maybe making sure wrong-thinkers aren’t on juries anymore, but the quote makes it seem like they just put whoever in the jury box.
It’s simple, they don’t want the balanced process used now. they want to throw out anyone who isn’t “the accusation is proof of guilt”
Does that mean you can also toss out the #believeher people in the jury pool?
Seriously, none of these issues are new, really, just appearing in different contexts. These fundamental questions have been asked and answered a long time ago. People who can’t live with the result should move to enlightened places that don’t use juries, like Saudi Arabia.
You know well it won’t be applied to both sides.
These types do seem to have a weird hard-on for more ‘traditional’ non-westernized societies, maybe that is why.
If it was only 300 we would have a decent chance. The history of juries seems a bit complex, but certainly dates back more than 300 years, you could conveniently say the 1215 Magna Carta, but I’m not sure we’d recognize those as juries in the modern sense. Either way the moniker ‘regressives’ is more apt I think.
13th c. juries acted as fact-finding inquests as much as deciding guilt or innocence. Jurors were chosen who had lots of local knowledge about the case and the players already. Today we do just the opposite.
Again, I ask (expecting no answer):
This Khashoggi thing, while horrible, was a crime committed by Saudis against a Saudi citizen, in a Saudi embassy, on Turkish soil.
Where do we fit in, exactly?
He was on a work visa in the US and he wrote for the WaPo, ergo he was part of the privileged caste.
See, this was the media’s response when Saudi Arabia was just killing some poor people in Yemen: https://theintercept.com/2016/09/09/wolf-blitzer-is-worried-defense-contractors-will-lose-jobs-if-u-s-stops-arming-saudi-arabia/
Notice how this is the exact same argument that Trump is making now with regards to Khashoggi. It is possible that both the president and his detractors are asshats. Actually, that is more true than not
What don’t you get? HE WAS A JOURNALIST!
Just about 8,400 km that way…
Where do we fit in, exactly?
We don’t. Except our “educated” classes are so atrociously educated that the concept of national sovereignty is one of those hundred year old words that nobody understands today. Therefore, since something bad happened, the U.S. government has a moral obligation to do something about it.
I’d like to OT and echo the sentiments of some of the Glibertariat regarding the personal importance of this site and the effort put forth by the founders, contributors and commenters. I feel like I’ve found my place and for that I am truly thankful. You people are a Godsend.
Aw shucks. Thanks Festus! You were singling me out, right?
When we finally meet our firm hand-shake will include a palm tickle. That way you’ll know that I am truly a Glib.
“Female scientist slams ‘sexist’ question from airport security”
https://www.news.com.au/finance/business/travel/female-scientist-slams-sexist-question-from-airport-security/news-story/c3a9ebe7641ce85735d1bd045e66401c
She’s an Instagram scientist.
I am guessing she is not married.
They asked her why she needs 2 laptops.
I would ask anybody the same thing. When I travel on my own dime I just bring my work laptop because anything I need to do personally I can do on that. I don’t bring two laptops because the damn things are not made of helium. An extra laptop adds to the weight and bulk.
Not all work places have such a permissive computing policy. Not to mention the trail left on the work machine and the spyware/monitoring tools on it, and the configuration lockdowns by group policy. I’d not do personal stuff on a work machine. Ever.
^this.
And the proper response is “Unless you have proof one is stolen or contains an explosive device, none of your goddamn business.” None of their goddamn business.
“Congradulations, Sir, you’ve been randomly selected for intensive screening.”
“And by intensive screening, I mean….”
https://twitter.com/AstronomerAmber/status/1064624037748342784
Another way of describing the incident might be “Somewhat attractive white female indignant about being spoken to by law enforcement in a less than completely polite tone for the first time ever.”
“Somewhat attractive white female” is not how you spell insufferable cunt.
Can you imagine going out on a date with this woman and trying to have any kind of a conversation with her?
Can you imagine getting on a plane without the government detaining you and demanding to know your business?
Right?
Last time I traveled for work I brought 2 laptops (personal and work) and not only did they ask why I have two, they checked both several times to make sure they weren’t bombs. #MalePrivilege
I got flagged for bringing food on a plane once, and I had no checked baggage, and I only had a one-way ticket. Detained me until right before the plane took off. “Hello, tomorrow I’m going to be helping my fiancé drive a moving truck back to my house.”
Yes I can Mojeaux. I haven’t flown since that was the case.
I dont fly now.
That is not what she was complaining about.
I don’t care what/how she said it. I care that she said anything at all.
I was confused by her a bit, because she is painting herself as an expert, and she seems quite young to be an expert in anything, then I scrolled a bit and found that she is only working on her M Sc. I guess she could be an expert already, but I kind of doubt it, especially because she doesn’t seem to have held any real job in those fields either.
The fact she speaks all in hashtags clued me in to that.
then I scrolled a bit and found that she is only working on her M Sc.
And, you know, if I were the professor evaluating her masters’ thesis, I’d drop her just for that little outburst.
+1 sassing back to the tyrants known as the TSA, an organization that shouldn’t exist and has no business knowing people’s business.
TSA is the insufferable ones. Who the Fuck cares if she’s attractive or not? TSA is the problem, not her.
Exactly.
I just skimmed the article, but it looks like she just assumed she was asked the question because she was female. Just like a POC might assume something was racist because they have a chip on their shoulder and always want to play the race card. There’s no real indication it was because she was female.
‘the most common cause of unsuccessful prosecutions in rape prosecutions is jury acquittal’.
Also sometimes referred to as failure to prove the charges beyond a shadow of a doubt.
“Juries have no place in rape trials. They simply can’t be trusted
Myths about rape are so widely believed by the public that their ability to deliver justice is compromised
The conviction rates for rape have long been shockingly low. This is what has led one Labour MP, Ann Coffey, today to suggest doing away with juries in rape trials.
I support this. Prevailing rape myths, such as “she was asking for it”, “he’s handsome, and does not ‘need’ to rape”, and “if she didn’t want it she would close her legs”, can poison the mind of a juror against the complainant, whatever the evidence against the defendant. Women and girls are routinely blamed for being raped, which means the perpetrator, even when it is abundantly clear that he is guilty, is too often absolved. That is how patriarchy works: keep females in a constant state of fear of male violence, and then put the responsibility for it firmly on their shoulders.”
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/nov/21/juries-rape-trials-myths-justice
The best defense against the charge of rape in the UK is, “Allah Akbar!!”
I thought the most common reason for rapists in England going unpunished is the cops turning a blind eye to rape gangs.
This. And sloth.
“I was asked to provide evidence of my claim that social justice attitudes are no longer relegated to fringe corners of society and rarefied college campuses. Here are a few examples where we are seeing these attitudes infecting areas of life/society affecting everyday people.”
https://twitter.com/SoOppressed/status/1064302705387163651
Saving that tweet because damn. I already lost enough old friends IRL because of this nonsense so I got that evidence in the bag already.
That’s terrible
In hindsight, it appears that the only problem with the Religious Right was that they were pushing the wrong faith. The Faith of Wokeness is now dictating laws and this is suppose to somehow be different
I have a catalogue of ‘SJW’ myself. It’s not anecdotal. It’s a movement and it’s seeping right into policy and law.
Our esteemed Prime Minister said it most succinctly, “Because it is (current year). Whatta slimy little cum-drop he is.
You were saying about that little authoritarian cum-shit stain?
And Bill Morneau and Freeland are no better.

The Liberals are buying the media.
Buying? The CBC was a different beast not even twenty years ago. I first noticed the trend when they went went from “Rah Rah Canada!” during the ’95 referendum and started on a long slow decline to identity this and identity that. It was bad when Harper was PM but post-Trump they are basically unlistenable.
Too bad they can’t get a blog.

The “Chinese finger trap” prosecutorial strategem, if you will.
So I am at the wine festival and 3 of the romanian wineries are owned by italians. Goddamn italians man comming into our country drinking our wine
Are you guys like the Greeks and olives? The Italians take the Greek olives repackage them and then sell the olive oil as “made in Italy”. “Made in Romania” wine just doesn’t have the same cache.
The italians buy milk from romania make cheese made in italy. There was a scandal about it
So it is just like the olive oil.
Those Italians are clever
If the cheese itself was made in italy, I don’t see why that would be a scandal. If the cheese was made in Romania and repackaged in italy, that would be a problem.
“Made in Romania” cheese does not sell as well as “Made in Italy” cheese. Same goes for olive oil. The Italians are banking off of the fact that upper class people, particularly in the US, will value the brand “made in Italy” above all else. The scandal is that the Italians are gaming the system. Taking the resources of these countries, which are not as plentiful in Italy, and banking on the brand name.
I’d venture to guess there is not much difference between olive oil from Greece versus olive oil from Italy. Same probably goes for cheese
But was the cheese made in Romania? That was the question I was asking. The sentence could read so many different ways.
Olive oil from italy has a problem beyond the olives they add random shit to it
Perhaps we should offer a STEVE SMITH brand Rapeseed oil.
But, the consumer still prizes it above Greek olive oil. Same would go for Italian cheese. They’re drinking your milkshake.
Moldovan wine is best wine.
Moldovan women are overall superior to the wine
Wife is Moldovan. Can confirm.
Per capita, the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen in my extensive traveling. Wine and food were great there as well.
That said, I’m curious enough that I’d pay a premium to try some Romanian cheeses.
After the debacle with Romanian lettuce this week, why take chances?
Can you imagine getting on a plane without the government detaining you and demanding to know your business?
So what you’re saying is you want the hijackers to win?
I remember getting on planes with no I.D. I remember crossing the border with no I.D. I remember lots of things from the wayback, like tube-tops, good popular music, slutty girls and no AIDS or herpes. Festus ‘members…
Still thinking about how to answer a question like this while defending individual liberties.
…or if I should even try to answer it. I mean, how does one deal with leading questions like this? Altered language, moral superiority, the illusion of safety before liberty…
Don the grey jump-suit, get in line in an orderly fashion and secretly prepare your bug-out bag?
Remember Archie Bunker’s solution to the Cuba airplane hijackings of the ’70s? It was supposed to be a joke, but it was unintentionally correct.
“Why do you need two laptops?”
“Fuck off”
For one party to later say that THEIR software, which THEY wrote, accidentally caused them to notify you erroneously that you won, is obviously welchery.
There’s an easy way to handle this. If I were the judge I’d offer the bookie a choice. They can pay up to the blackjack winner. Or they can let their “it was a mistake” excuse stand. And every single person who lost a bet to them for the last five years can pose the same claim to the bookmaker and receive a full refund.
Apropos of nothing. The JFK assassination.
I was listening to the Parcast podcast show “Conspiracy Theories”…they finally covered the Grandaddy of all Conspiracy Theories. The three they evaluated:
1. JFK was killed by LHO as part of a communist conspiracy involving Cuba and/or the USSR. They gave this a 3 out of 10, with 10 being “absolutely believable.
2. Oswald killed JFK, but the famous head shot was an accidental shooting by a Secret Servive member that was riding in the car following the Prez limo. They gave this an 8 out of 10, based on the head shot being done using an exploding bullet.
3. LHO killed JFK as part of a right-wing conspiracy involving one or more of the following: the CIA, the Mafia, the Military-Industrial Complex, etc. They gave this one a 7 out of 10, because “right-wing” (their podcast on the OKC bombing worked the phrase “right-wing” into the story in every conceivable way possible).
Here is anonymous conservative’s news links from yesterday, which begins with his thoughts on the subject, based on his viewing a video called, “JFK: the Smoking Gun”
We need a special counsel to investigate Ted Cruz’s dad.
I thought the accidental discharge of the secret service agent’s revolver was almost certainly what happened. Don’t most firearms and ballistics experts agree on this? My understanding is that the agent even fessed up to it. Am I remembering incorrectly?
This is the first I’ve ever heard this one.
“Accidental” 😉
Extremely anonymous.
I wondered why the “Anniversary” passed yesterday with nary a mention on any of the mainstream media that I consumed. Not a whisper.
https://www.anonymousconservative.com/blog/news-briefs-11222018/
The Oswald Acted Alone makes…pretty goddamn easy good sense to me. His Russian history, walking up to Soviet and Cuban embassies and being told to fuck off, the pro-Cuban literature he handed out…trying to assassinate a general (whose name escapes me)….he was a pretty shady dude. And could at least shoot a rifle pretty well.
I’ve been to Dealey Plaza. With that elevation it doesn’t look like a crazy shot to me (granted, a non-marksman).
HOWEVER. The Ruby assassination of Oswald has always bothered me. He goes there to kill LHO and….brings his dog and leaves it in the car? Why would he have brought it? I know that he had Mafia connects and was a loose cannon…but that’s pretty fucking loose. And his excuse of doing it to save Jackie from a trial is obvious bullshit.
I do think there is more to that aspect then is known.
One must also take into account that Oswald was caught on film, standing on the front steps of the depository building, just after the shots were fired.
“The Wizard of Oswald”.
I’ve stood where Oswald was in the Depository. It’s not a hard shot. I’m a mediocre shot and I’ve taken walking deer at that range.
What about the theory that it was Biff Tannon trying to kill Marty, but missed?
Crazy Uncle Tom is crazy.
Although white suburban women were praised for helping to flip the U.S. House from Republican to Democratic control, liberal political pundits and activists criticized them for backing Kemp over the female Democratic candidate.
But another group of voters also raised eyebrows for how they voted in the race, in which Abrams fell about 17,000 votes short of forcing a runoff with Kemp.
Black men voted for Kemp at a higher rate than black women, according to exit polling, a data point that drew gasps and rebuke on social media and news commentary.

Black men voted for Kemp at a higher rate than black women, according to exit polling, a data point that drew gasps and rebuke on social media and news commentary.
————-
“How can so many black men still align with a party that, now more than ever, is unified by white identity politics?” Renée Graham asked in a Boston Globe column after the election. “This Republican Party is not the party of Lincoln. This is unabashedly the party of white supremacy, migrant family separations, racist fearmongering, and Brett Kavanaugh.”
———–
Black men who voted for Kemp were not so much rejecting Abrams as embracing the conservative messages of rugged individualism and free-market economics.
“I think it boils down to — the conservative mantra of self-determination and economic empowerment resonates with men, period, but especially with a certain cohort of black men,” Johnson said. “Like the brothers that are hustling CD to the brothers that open barbershops, that entrepreneurial spirit is alive in the black community.”
He said those voters believe that the GOP talking point of “getting government out of the way and letting people determine their own economic path. That sounds good to black men, and it’s a mantra they can support rather than having the government say we’re gonna help you to be a man.”
Oh, no. Self hating race traitors want to act white. So sad.
Don’t they know their lot is to take the freebies and scraps and vote for the Dem candidate?
Apparently making everything about “identity” makes you stupid. I would not have guessed that.
“Raised eyebrows”. Whose eyebrows? How high? Clueless fucking morons don’t understand individuality and the country or political system they are trying so desperately to tear down, bit by bit, one grain of sand at a time.
“Why are the ranks of patriarchal white supremacists filled with women and blacks?”
I cant answer that because I dont speak Gibberish.
This^^^! I don’t feature it. It is nonsensical warbling from a tired, timid mind. It makes no bloody sense, whatsoever.
Johnson said there are a lot of black people who “may be social conservatives or fiscal conservatives but are liberal on the issue of civil rights and race.”
“To be a racial conservative means you’re okay with Jim Crow,” he added. “There’s only one party that you can support and be progressive on race, and that’s the Democratic Party.”
There is only one correct definition of racial justice, and the Democratic Party holds the copyright.
And don’t you forget it.
It is forever the 1960s for these types. The reason they’re now batshit insane with “identity politics” is that their parents’ generation accomplished everything regarding “civil rights and race” that they set out to. For-reals racism is no longer socially or legally acceptable anywhere in the US.
And if mostly white, upper-middle-class Democrats tell you that your children must be relegated to public schools in your neighborhoods, trust that they know what’s best for your family.
Under socialism you’d have free fresh raspberries after a short wait in a line.
Damn…..dead thread Gilmore
Still thinking about how to answer a question like this while defending individual liberties.
It can’t be done. No matter what you say, you hate America and want innocent children to be slaughtered in front of their weeping mommies.
They are relentless. Four year-olds that didn’t get a Barbie. They will kick and scream and even shite themselves if they believe that they will eventually get their way. Unfortunately, it seems to be working, incrementally. There wasn’t a “Blue Wave” but what we’re left with is more of a “Blue Seep”.
NO FRY TURKEY! SEE FOOD GROUPS ABOVE – NO FRY.
I’ve had deep fried turkey. It’s good, and we didn’t set anything on fire.
Sounds boring.
Yesterday, dessert was chocolate ice cream with raspberries.
Fresh raspberries, in Montana, in November. Capitalism made that happen.
If all the wannabe socialists were provided with a free helicopter ride to the nearest volcano, the world would be a much better place.
Oh yeah? Whattabout all that poisoned lettuce?
There’s no lettuce in Montana. The State Vegetable is veal.
I want to go to there.
John Roberts should shut his goddamn mouth. In the most important ruling he may ever make in his life, he abandoned any semblance of principle, and made what he believed to be a politically expedient ruling, and essentially made his own argument in doing so. That piece of shit basically signed off on allowing the federal government to do whatever the fuck it once as long as they call it a tax.
I think it’s more interesting that the same people who assured us that Justice Kavanaugh was Republican shill (and a gang rapist) are now saying there is no such thing as ideological judges. That’s cute
It’s a shame that those idiots will only be judged by the jaundiced eye of history and not by a jury of their peers.
There were no elk yesterday. Granted, we didn’t try that hard, but was still a good day. Montana is great. If there were some road courses around here I’d probably move here and settle down.
The barista at the coffee shop today was wearing yoga pants and hot damn, she’s got a smoking body. She’s always been nice/cheerful, and has excellent taste in music. But she usually wears overalls, coveralls, Dickies, etc.
I might have to go get another coffee.
“(insert any woman) was wearing yoga pants and hot damn”
Evergreen remark
The one bright side of the Xmas season for me is all the temps that they bring in. It’s a treat to see young women that are pre-menopausal. I fill those little containers with the paper sacks and come Xmas time, we have a run on them. I’m not a creeper, not at all…
Yoga pants are God’s way of trying to increase the world birthrate
There is the the Walmart Coefficient so that might not be set in stone but overall, yes. Yoga pants are a good thing.
Sounds like you better not talk any politics with her.
Sounds like he has to think ahead. Duct tape? Check. Soundproof room? Check. OMWC van? Check and check!
I might have to go get another coffee.
Excellent idea.
Giggly Coffee? Do EeeeeeeeeeeT!
