Happy last full (work) week of November. For some of you, government types especially, I figure this is the last full work week of the year. I’m not jealous, but sometimes I wish I was in that sort of cruise job. Anyhow, I got out of Dearborn as the atmosphere itself was solidifying. So I hope all my coworkers lived. Here are some links.
We’re changing the definition of the kilogram? Great. Still 0 moonlandings by kilogram using nations.
Intersectionality comes for the oldest lesbian bar in Norfolk. Enjoy your dog-park.
UK names new Brexit secretary. Hopefully one who believes in Brexit this time.
Look at this shitlord Trumpista enhancing protections of those accused of sexual assault. Its almost like they are innocent until PROVEN guilty.
Time to relax a little.
Score one for imperial measures, biotches
Every nation but the USA is responsible for the moon landing. An actor told me so.
“You didn’t land that”
*Manned* moon landings. The Soviets have done unmanned soft landings and other nations have crashed probes.
And timely XKCD.
“I’m glad to hear they’re redefining the meter to be exactly 3 feet.”
Pro tip — always read the alt text on XKCD.
Yep, and I remember the first time I stumbled across one of the alt-texts… then went back and read the full archive again.
I believe someone once said a meter is a Froggy yard and I don’t care what anyone says they‘re just trying to post-hoc rationalize it.
I’m glad to hear they’re redefining the meter to be exactly 3 feet.
I understand they’re going to redefine pi as a value of precisely 3.0, too.
Yawn. Nobody cares–one way or the other–about imperial units in the metric countries.
D&D and Warhammer players do!

Us FedGovs in the field don’t get luxurious time off. I do get Tgivings off though so that’s nice. I’ll be covering my boss through the rest of year.
Government-sector fuckers get more time off then those of us whose taxes pay them. Schools get snow days, and we had to drive in to work at 5AM today.
I’m not disagreeing with you here. We have an overly generous package when it comes to that. However, there are some who don’t take advantage of it and do work like everyone else.
I’ve blown off most of my CBA to get the job done and probably have broken laws doing so.
During furloughs…we were barred from coming to work but the radars are not going to fix themselves. Getting called in the middle of the night to provide technical assistance? I’m not going to claim that time as directed in my contract. It’s my job. I’m not here to bilk the taxpayer, I’m here to fix the equipment that I have 15 years knowledge on.
You do get the rest of your life off after 20 years.
Usually 30, but yeah.
Who among us hasn’t thrown himself down a flight of stairs for an early pension?
Hey, that handrail was loose. (after I loosened it)
I work for the government, and I agree – we get a tremendous amount of time off. I carry over my max every year, so that means I have to take the full 26 days off every year or I will lose it. Add in the credit hours (a one-for-one time off for every hour worked over 40 in a week) and the travel comp (any travel outside of normal work hours), and I probably have another 10 days or so leave in a year. Then the sick leave, which doesn’t have a max carryover. I was just off work for the last month and a half recovering from knee surgery, and I’m only about a third of the way through my built up sick leave.
I could be making a bit more in the private sector in my career field, but I chose the time…

Way too many great choices so I’ll just say I’d like to see Rule 34 with 34.
3 is pretty great.
I think I have an actual glasses fetish – in that, glasses by themselves are in no way a sexual object, yet I find women in glasses sexy. Isn’t that the definition of a fetish?
I have “fetishes” for some things where it’s not the thing itself, but the idea of the woman doing this thing. Like lingerie – I don’t actually prefer a woman to have it on during sex; it just gets in the way. But what gets me going is the thought that she wants to please me so much that she got all dressed up in this sexy outfit.
WTF is going on in 16?
And, hot damn, 63.
+1 chicks on horses.

Ohhhh look who has come crawling back, brazenly posting links like he isn’t gainfully employed and too busy for us!
“Intersectionality comes for the oldest lesbian bar in Norfolk. Enjoy your dog-park”
$1.5M for the land to put in a dog park does seem really steep and unnecessary. Norfolk got nothing better to do with $1.5M in tax dollars?
It’s Norfolk
“We don’t drink and we don’t smoke!”
“Norfolk! Norfolk!”
The article says there are three dog parks already in a three mile radius of this place.
But are there any lesbian dog parks? No price is too great to achieve equal representation.
(It’s possible I didn’t read the article due to being too lazy to bypass the paywall)
When you say lesbian dog parks, do you mean the dog’s owners are lesbians, or that the dogs themselves are lesbian?
Like all good policy, the details will be ironed out later. We have to build the park to find out what’s in it.
The parking lot will look like a Subaru dealership.
Aren’t all dog parks lesbian dog parks?
Seriously when I used to bring the mutt to a dog park to get some exercise it was always populated with a big mob of lesbians who had made their dog substitute for a kid. And they disciplined (or not) accordingly.
Every single one.
In that case, I don’t see what the barflies are so upset about.
but think of all the starving peasants they could have fed with that money…
Still would have been more useful than a dog park
Not to mention exactly why a city should be providing dog parks in the first place…
Dogs vote too.
Gentrification is no longer market-based, but is instead facilitated by government action. Thank Richard Florida for that
There’s got to be a joke about bitches in that story somewhere.
And Butches.
A la tomayto tomahto?
I hated everybody in that article. What a shitshow.
Looks like the bar was a tenant. This was not eminent domain. The city is buying a whole parcel of land from the owner of the lot where the bar is.
I hope those lesbians learned their lesson. You can try to fight City hall, but you will never lick them.
RE: Commie mass measurements.
“This is really a pivot point for humanity,”
No. No it’s not.

Related to kilogram standards.
I was really hoping this would be something Q worthy. *sigh*
Sorry. At least I only post SFW links.
Maybe it is? My gut feeling is that this conversion will somehow make it easier to “prove” that Climate Change is real. If so, it will be a pivot point.
They just changed to using a fundamental constant to define a kilogram (Planck’s constant divided by 6.626,070,15 × 10−34 m−2s) instead of using some artifact that’s sitting in a vault (Le Grand K). A kilo is still a kilo.
In theory, anyone can access that reference kilo now, instead of some metrology priesthood. That’s unambiguously good.
I thought this was a good article on it:

I empathize with the host in this video, because I tend to laugh at tragedy, even though I know I shouldn’t.
I hope the new rules start with creating a more rational and circumspect set of definitions covering what is considered sexual misconduct.
That’s almost certainly not going to happen.
I clicked for lesbian pics.
I’m sorry I did.
Well, DUH, real life ain’t a Skinemax movie
I think I know why they’re closing down
My eyes got opened in law school when a lesbian friend took me to a lesbian bar. The lipstick lesbians were what I hoped for. It was all downhill from there.
Best drinks I’ve ever had were at a gay bar. Bartender at first wanted us to leave since we were not of their type but soon realized we were there to enjoy drinks with a lot of money.
Yes, the drinks are notoriously strong at gay bars.
Tourists (ie, straight people) are viewed with suspicion because many times they become obnoxious. And for a while it was a thing for straight chicks to hold their bachelorette parties at gay (male) bars.
By today’s standards, I’ve been sexually assaulted at least twice at gay bars. It was the price of dating girls who lived in Hillcrest, San Diego.
#MeToo
I’m pretty sure one of them played Francis in Pee Wee’s Big Adventure.
It did say they were old lesbians.
I keep telling you guys…
Look at this shitlord Trumpista enhancing protections of those accused of sexual assault. Its almost like they are innocent until PROVEN guilty.
This is why I don’t subscribe to the pox on both their houses view. The right occasionally attempts to do something good.
I’m not at all surprised by this “related” link.
Ensuring due process rights for accused men (notably a group of men disproportionately racial minorities) = Fascism.
The right occasionally attempts to do something good.
Well, a wise man once said that the right is stupid, but the left is evil.
But, yeah, I get your point.
From your link:
This one is a puzzler. I wonder how much is sincere belief, versus just parroting the party line.
I’ll take this as a good thing: 73% of females and 78% of Democrats believe that people accused of sexual assault should be given the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise.
So strong majorities feel that both the alleged victim and the alleged perpetrator should receive the benefit of the doubt.
Nobody said that consistency is our strength.
Shows the vaguery of the question, and the agreeability bias baked in. If the questions were “Do you believe that accusers should be given the benefit of the doubt when reporting the crime to the police?” and “Do you believe that the accused should be given the benefit of the doubt in a he said/she said situation where the consequences are expluslion from the school?”, I could see answering yes to both.
Saw this Stevie Ray Vaughan – Voodoo Child live video recently. Does not get any better.
Don’t bother visiting the Frist Art Museum in Nashville. Possibly the worst art museum I’ve been to. Country Music Hall of Fame was surprisingly good, even if they have a T Swizzle Education Center.
Grand Ole Opry tonight. Really excited to finally go. They should have a function on their website to limit the show results to just the day(s) you select. So depressing to see the names performing before and after.
How was the quilt museum?
*snicker*
It was the AIDS quilt, you monster
Don’t know. Wife wasn’t feeling great so passed on that. Two hours of driving through snow and rain at 32F but that’s the breaks.
If you haven’t already, be sure to hit Tootsie’s 2nd floor. The 2nd Fiddle and Benchmark have good bands at times. The best bands anywhere come out after 9PM.

All bitches are equal, but some bitches are more equal than others.
But our 35-year history is being torn down in this way where the city is essentially saying we’re less than a dog.
Gee, it’s almost like the government you wanted involved in every aspect of everyone’s lives isn’t really your friend.
Like they would connect those dots…
Ding ding ding!
Yes, it’s just terrible that your sexual orientation is so widely accepted that there is no longer anything novel about the bar. Now you get treated like everyone else. *Sad trombone*
^^^ So much this. Every time I see some sob piece about another gay bar going out of business, all I can think is, “yes, because you convinced society to change their minds and you don’t need some special place now”.
^This.
That said, the gloryhole at the local Applebee’s took some getting used to.
Still complaining about it being too drafty?
Didn’t we explain it to you enough? If we build it to your specs it stops being a glory hole and is just a peep hole.
I just wish the edges were sanded a bit more.
Really, it’s been a positive change, overall.
Perhaps, someday, I’ll get to meet some of those ladies on the other side of the wall who are just looking for a carefree, anonymous way to service some fellas. They seem really enthusiastic.
“Intersectionality comes for the oldest lesbian bar in Norfolk. Enjoy your dog-park.”
Yuppie always outranks every single category on the intersectional pyramid.
But victims’ advocates lambasted the new rules, saying they will have a chilling effect on reporting, as survivors will not want to subject themselves to such a difficult process.
“It demonstrates Betsy DeVos and the Trump administration share the same attitude about assault that we saw from Senate Republicans during the Kavanaugh hearing — disparage and diminish survivors and discourage them from reporting,” says Jess Davidson of the group End Rape On Campus.
Combined with other proposed changes, she says, this would mark a return to a time when “rape, assault and harassment were swept under the rug.” Her group already is organizing protests.
Of course they are.
A social media acquaintance had back to back posts today that were: First, celebrating millionaire reporter Jim Acosta’s rights to due process to retain a White House press pass and; Second, gnashing teeth and rending garments over college aged men accused of sexual assault receiving due process rights to remain in school.

Yup, Trump supporters are definitely the fascists. Not the people opposing due process

When even WokeHat takes issue with the ACLU.
There are going to be some somber cocktail parties this weekend
Saw that this morning. My eyebrows went up.
For Ken White to trash the ACLU (or any left-wing organization) is surprising.
From the comments, “How are civil liberties not social justice.” You use that as an opening statement to explain many of today’s problems.
One of the things on my list of stuff the kids have to know: The word “Social” used as a modifier makes it mean the opposite of the modified word. Social Justice is the opposite of Justice. The Social Gospel is the opposite of the Gospel. Social Studies does not include actual study. They are diametrically opposed and cannot work together. Neither can live while the other survives.
Wow what a long history for that lesbian bar.
“Since 1983”
I thing I have t-shirts that have been around longer.
only slightly stained?
Slightly stained and threadbare
Oh, and I to have T-shirts from 1983. Souvenirs of another lifetime. in 1983, I was six feet tall and probably about 110 lb. And t-shirts at the time were worm tight.
So my tours shirts and jerseys from that era look like they would fit my elementary School daughter. It’s always nice to have a reminder of just how fat you’ve gotten 🙁
I saw the title of one of the oldest lesbian bars on the East coast, and it gave me pause. I mean, my history a bar hopping does not date any further back than 1983 either, but it sure seems that there were gay and lesbian bars that had been in existence by the time I gained the age of majority in 1983.
And this is in small town North Carolina. I am quite certain that if you went to Atlanta or another larger metropolitan area they would have had such places even earlier. And that is just the South.
They said on the East coast. That includes New York City, Boston,…. I’m just going to go out on a limb and say that they must have meant something more like within the top 100 to 200 oldest lesbian bars on the eastern half of the United States.
Perhaps they mean “exclusively lesbian”? I dunno. Most of the ones I’ve seen were lesbian only one night a week.
Meh, probably in NYC there is too much turnover in the bar biz for any place (lesbian or no) to stick around for 35 years.
Britain just needs to throw every high government official who isn’t named Rees-Mogg in the Tower of London and start the negotiations over or just leave. What a shit show.
If we had a Parliamentary system, Mitch McConnell or Nancy Pelosi would be our Prime Minister.

But, I should watch it, if for no other reason than to get all the references used here.
It is almost old enough to be on TCM.
I’ve never seen it either. Really need to correct that.
The scary thing is I don’t see that much difference between the cabinet in Idiocracy and some of Congress.

On the whole metric kefuffle, someone pointed something out to me once. The supposed advantage of the metric system is that it’s more rational in that it’s base ten and, thus easier to work with. In fact, that was why it was created during the French Revolution in its attempt to remake the world according to (French) Enlightenment ideals. The thing is, that’s only true because we use a base ten counting system. But, the only reason we use a base ten counting system is because humans happen to have ten fingers and ten toes. Because it’s much more dividable into common fractions (thirds, quarters), switching to a duodecimal counting system would actually have been much more rational by the standards of the metric system’s creators.
I never understood that reasoning. Even if I had 8 fingers, it would still be easier to easier to just change the first digit when adding 10 and changing the number of zeros when multiplying.
10 octal X 10 octal = 100 octal
10 octal is 8 decimal
100 octal is 64 decimal
Math is math, no matter the base you’re working in.
To broaden things out, our numeral system works like this:
Each digit from right to left is a succeeding power of the base N. The rightmost digit is N^0, the “tens place” is N^1, etc. This way, the math stays the same no matter what base you’re working in. The only difference is how many numbers you can use in a digit before it overflows to the next higher power digit.
By the way, this works for both smaller bases (10binary X 10binary =100 binary… 2×2=4) and larger bases (10hex X 10hex =100hex… 16×16=256)
That’s true if you’re translating to decimal. It wouldn’t be, if you were using a base-8 system.
Don’t you have 8 fingers, you freak?
Who’s got two thumbs and thinks this is funnier than it probably is?
Among the most significant changes is that schools can make it harder to prove allegations by raising the level of proof needed.
Shame the changes aren’t, “Don’t get involved, it’s not a matter for the school to handle.”
what’s the week of 11/26-11/30? chopped liver? that’s a full week!
Not under the new metric measurements.
Get with the pogrom, comrade.
Stupid fucking white women
The feminist hostility towards white women became most apparent during the Brett Kavanaugh debacle. The women who were appalled by his treatment during his confirmation hearings – in which unproven allegations were used to try to bring him down – were attacked as enablers of misogyny. ‘The 53 per cent had once again sold out their sisters in the service of the patriarchy, an especially egregious sin in the wake of the #MeToo movement’, read a piece in the Washington Post.
But the idea that white women are doing the patriarchy’s bidding is just a rehash of the reactionary ideas which were once used to withold women the vote. Women were said to be too impressionable, too hysterical, too emotional to be trusted with the franchise. Some argued that women would just double the votes of their husbands, because they’d have no views of their own.
There are many reasons why women vote for Republicans. It is ludicrous to assume that a young woman working in a convenience store in rural Ohio will naturally have the same political views and interests as a female banker in New York. Given the fact that white women were so lambasted for voting for Trump, I’d hazard a guess that some voted for Republican candidates in the Midterms just to stick it to the elitist ‘Resistance’.
White women aren’t a monolithic voting bloc, who all think alike? I never would have guessed.
Women were said to be too impressionable, too hysterical, too emotional to be trusted with the franchise.
Sometimes the truth will leave a nasty mark.
Individuals don’t exist
Bill DeBlasio’s excuse for sucking up to Amazon while railing against Walmart
tl;dr: Progressives use Amazon. And oh yeah the Waltons are Republican.
Alternatively, “You don’t want to be a people of Walmart, do you?”
Yup. That’s a non-trivial part of it. Particularly in Manhattan and the more fashionable neighborhoods of Brooklyn.
Meanwhile, Manhattan especially contains numerous housing projects that are populated with poor people who would probably love to shop at a WalMart if it wasn’t for their betters keeping them out.
It boils down to classism.
Back a couple of years ago the hypocrisy was based around the urban liberal’s love for Target, while trashing WalMart. Target has basically the exact same business model as WalMart, so it never made any sense to trash one while shopping at the other. It all boiled down to the fact that WalMart was a rural phenomenon and Target was the urban counterpart.
He can do all the mental gymnastics that he wants, but it boils down to the fact that he thinks WalMart is for white trash (aka “bad people who should die, because progress or some Hegelian clap trap bullshit”)
He can do all the mental gymnastics that he wants, but it boils down to the fact that he thinks WalMart is for white trash
Which is funny, because when…my friend… visits Walmart, he notices that it seems to have one of the most diverse clienteles of any store chain.
Perhaps that’s why he slouched into the presser 41 minutes late. (Note: he is well-known for being late to everything. He might be the world’s laziest communist.)
Comrade Sanders says hold my vodka.
Having been to an actual communist country, that is a very high bar to meet.
Well I can’t complain if he actually says what everyone’s been thinking. “Amazon good because we use it, Walmart bad because we don’t”.
Boston–obviously Democrat–politicians have done their best to prevent Walmart from opening a store in or near the city. Many people here have no experience shopping at Walmart because the stores are nowhere close. I would guess Walmart wasn’t welcome in Manhattan either.
They tried to ban them in Chicago, but black aldermen pushed back because their communities suffered from a lack of food stores at affordable prices. WalMart is a hang-up only for well to do white urbanites. It has everything to do with fashion and condescension and nothing to do with logic or anything remotely making sense.
To be fair, it also has a lot to do with pandering to the union types that form the other half of the Dem base. In their eyes, “no jobs” is better than “non-union jobs”.
That’s a good point. I forgot that they objected too. I forget about private unions now, because they’ve become so insignificant
Huh. I just looked on Bing maps and there are no Walmarts in New York city. That seems so crazy.
That’s stupid even for that moron.
Amazon is used by the good people who drive Priuses and listen to NPR. Walmart is used by yokels who drive F-150s with different colored fenders who watch WWE.
Don’t forget tractor pulls.
“who watch WWE.”
From my experience they are all into MMA. Midwestern yokel may be different from other parts of the country, though
Whatever you like or dislike about Amazon, Walmart is an entirely different universe in terms of the efforts they’ve undertaken to not only undermine labor, small business, the environment … and obviously the politics of [Walmart’s owners] the Walton family to add to it
Unintentional honesty is sometimes the best kind.
Not to mention their association with notoriously corrupt former Board Member – Hillary Clinton.
Deblasio has never been shy about expressing his sympathies. And why should he be, when the Dems run everything and the GOP is effectively dead? Same goes for Andrew “There is no place in New York for Those People” Cuomo.
This is an elected mayor admitting that he basis his economic favoritism and policy off of dislike of a business owners politics. That he favors business people with his politics.
In a society where people hold principles, that would be a problem.
Ain’t machine politics grand?

Decent waterfowl reports from Eastern NoDak.
SW Idaho. I’ve been paying attention to the waterfowl reports and the birds haven’t come down yet.

It’s weird, but I haven’t talked to anybody who has been hunting birds. Nobody seems to be having any difficulty filling their deer and elk tags.

Democrat Congressman wants to start the next civil war. Ban assault weapons, buy them back, go after resisters
“An assault weapon, then, is a hand-held weapon of war, capable of spraying a crowd with more lethal fire in seconds.”
If he really believes that, he’s perfectly willing to send someone else into buildings to confiscate them. What a POS.
Oh wait, he’s an ex-prosecutor. That explains it.
Didn’t the guy in Thousand Oaks use a pistol?
He isn’t trying to stop crime. He wants you disarmed so he can make you a serf.
Gary Jackson never stood a chance.
Gary was 28 and working as a security guard at a taco truck in Oakland, Calif., in 2009 when he saw Dreshawn Lee carrying a sawed-off shotgun and reported it to police. Three months later, Lee took his revenge by shooting and killing Jackson with an AK-47-style semiautomatic assault rifle.
There’s no way that Gary would have died had he only been shot with the sawed-off shotgun instead!
Or an arrow. Or stabbed or bludgeoned,
I can’t get past “security guard at a taco truck”. I mean, Oakland, I get it but… what does the good Congressman think about that?
There’s a bit to unpack there, in particular:
– the taco truck needs security
– the taco truck can _afford_ security
-the security guard accepts his pay in tacos.
Now I want tacos.
Same.
Taco trucks have security guards? People are so desperate to sell tacos that they go into areas that require security to do so? It’s a truck, go sell tacos to people that won’t kill you if you go light on the queso.
Acquaintance on FB is bitching that it took two hours for her to be seen at urgent care for a sore throat. And then someone else said this:
“On a tangent, if we had universal health care, urgent care and the emergency room wouldn’t be clogged up with people using their last and only possible healthcare option because they don’t have insurance.”
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA
Bitch, please. “Are you taking in new patients?” is literally the #1 question Canadian doctors hear.
Answer is usually “No”.
Indeed. The shortages of doctors here in the Lower Mainland is so acute, that when I actually found a doctor willing to take on a few new patients, one of the first questions he asked me was “Do you know of any other doctors taking new patients?”
Turns out he needed a family physician for himself and his family, and wasn’t able to find one.
As someone that has once actually sought emergency treatment under a socialist “universal” health care system, please allow me to state the following:
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m almost choked on my food.
It’s the opposite.

“if citizens don’t give up their arms we’ll nuke ourselves!” is not as compelling argument as he seems to think.
OK, what’s with Democrats?
I get riling the base and waving the bloody shirt to get elected. But FFS, you won. Every time you try to “git tough on gunz” you get rekt. Why not focus on things your idiots want as much? Repubs have the Senate, you never have to take any responsibility for the damage done by Free Shit And Student Loan Forgiveness Act since it won’t pass there, and you can equally well gather funds on it. Or on abortions. Mexicans. Literally anything but guns!
They are terrified of people who are independent of the state.
The state, to them, is community. It’s the church. It’s society.
People who have guns are rejecting the protection of the state. They are rebelling against the true church. They are diabolical.
Ok, but why not…private education? Private healthcare? Muh brown children in concentration camps? They have so many things that rile the base that are also outside the state and that get about 3% of the pushback that “take all gunzzzz!” gets.
I mean, Jesus, look how popular straw bans are. Get on that nation-wide!
Remember, they partake of private education. They partake of private health care. They want to take those things away from the poor, but retain it for themselves.
Plus, every time they have a “national dialogue” about guns, it sparks a panic of gun purchases. I think I remember reading somewhere that in the 365 days after Newtown, there were more guns sold than would have been sold in the next five years had the rate of gun purchases stayed as it was.
… Not that more gun sales is a bad thing. More people exercising that right only strengthens the cause. And I like the idea that I might be able to sell my MAK-90 for 3 times what I paid for it.
But FFS, you won. Every time you try to “git tough on gunz” you get rekt.
They have a false sense of security, because (according to exit polls) the energy in the last election on guns was behind the Democrats. Of course, that could (and most assuredly would) change if they actually made a move on guns, but they don’t exactly take a long view of things, do they?
I’m sure if we talked we could find common ground to protect our families and communities.
Oh, he just wants to have a conversation.
But not until you’ve put down the gun.
That’s my congressman, Representative Putty.
High Five!
That’s the one. Swalwell has the same vacant look.
Rep Swalwell should pay attention to our War in Afghanistan. Fire power doesn’t mean shit
^This^
Every time one of the gun grabbers rolls their eyes and says that there is no way a bunch of rubes with rifles could beat the govt, I bring up Afghanistan. I am told that that is different somehow.
Then I totally p0wn the by referencing that fine documentary about the Wolverines holding off the Cubans and Russians.
Wolverines got rekt when Soviets replaced second line garrisoners with combat troops in the area, though.
Hey! It was North Koreans in the good movie.
*snort*
This might be the most wrong thing I’ve read all day.
There’s one simple answer to his “the government can just nuke ya” drivel – where the fuck do you nuke? The entire country except for the Acela Corridor? And what the fuck does Einstein over here think happens when the commander of one of our nuclear subs gets word that the psychopath decided to kill his entire family?
Sorry for the course language, but this is just plain psychotic. And somehow or another, it passes for an actual argument in some circles.
Where does he think the land based nukes are? Is he just going to dial up a base in Montana and order them to nuke… Montana?
The really insane thing is that I’ve heard similar arguments before.
To be fair, we didn’t use our “vast nuclear arsenal” in Afghanistan. I wonder how much of the US he’s willing to glass to confiscate our guns.
Wanna bet he rambles about Republicans trying to take his vital bodily fluids?
^This^
Fire-power does mean something, if you use it. The question, of course, is should you use it? And given that the US has been hesitant to repeat their approach to Germany & Japan, the idea that the US would go total war on its own citizens is laughable.
It is. Even if such a thing were attempted, it would be like Iraq times ten. The rates of civilian gun ownership would make that a nightmare as would the proficiency. Hell, you have plenty of people – almost all of them conservatives or libertarians – who stockpile food and ammunition in preparation for that exact scenario.
Also, I find it funny how you will hear anti-gun people say both of these things:
“You think your guns will protect you from government tyranny?? They have jets and nuclear bombs; you don’t stand a chance with that little pea shooter!”
“Holy shit, what do you need an AR-15 for?? The only person who would have that is someone who is going to take over the government or something!”
He should also consider who makes up the bulk of the armed forces that he expects to enforce his bullshit. It ain’t gender-studies majors from Sarah Lawrence.
Fear the mighty LGTBQ Brigade!
In fairness, I might fear some of the Ls shown in the dog park article.
A fair amount of them are in the Air Force, I hear.
No, I said the armed forces.
/jarhead
Christ almighty. With that one tweet, he proved beyond the shadow of a doubt that he is not only an evil POS, but an absolute, irredeemable, imbecile. Does this clown think the gun owners in a civil war would be nice and neatly congregated in one place? Does he think the entirety of the armed forces would just blindly obey his order to engage in one of the greatest acts of mass murder in history?
He’s doubling down, by the way.
https://twitter.com/RepSwalwell/status/1063543731431727104
Christ, even compared to other Democrats he’s a massive cunt.
If TEAM RED weren’t so stupid, they’d tie every single Democrat to this until the cows come home.
This. They should beat their drums until they get the dems to force him to step down from his leadership position. Then, they should use it in 2020 to show how dems are tyrants because when a representative literally threatened to nuke American citizens for asserting their 2a rights, all they did was strip away some nominal leadership position.
This made me laugh:
I love Nick. I miss Justified.
…the founders never mentioned anything about assault weapons automatic semi-automatic what do they do shoot one round with powder and a projectile
“Arms” is a very broad category. It includes all manner of military weaponry. If the founders thought it should be restricted, they would’ve used a more specific term than “arms” and a more restrictive phrase than “shall not be infringed”.
Which, of course, is besides the point: even if the second amendment were repealed, the people would still have the natural right to use a “second amendment approach” to oppose tyranny.
” automatic semi-automatic ”
Hmmm, I could use one of them, save me a lot of trouble and time when a flock of deer settle into my decoys
JFC – hello, Republicans – ad campaign for 2020 right here. *sigh*
And the odds that anyone in the media will ask him if he is really suggesting that the government nuke his own constituents? I’d put it at about zero.
The left-leaning ones will, and he’ll use the ‘woodchipper’ excuse (rightfully) and then they’ll ignore it. No one on the right will because it’s better to fan the flames than give the guy a chance to play the sarcasm/hyperbole card, and then they’ll bring it up for the next two years.
“give the guy a chance to play the sarcasm/hyperbole card”
Well, the nuke line was clearly sarcasm & the comments on the twitter feed by people who took that at face value were, um, odd.
What I was less clear on was whether or not he was suggesting that the US government could/should take armed action to confiscate weapons even if that only meant SWAT raids.
He did, he’s pushing a make some guns illegal, and (as a sop to Gun NutZ) added we’ll buy them back instead of taking them. But everyone knows if people don’t sell then they are going to confiscate. A very reasonable argument against his can be made. “He wants to Nuke America!!! is not that argument.
It’s just a reversal of the hysteria aimed towards Trump re: jokes of questionable taste and the “dignity of the office.”
Haha.
So I am finishing up the day working from a coffee shop. The coffee shop has been swarmed by a bunch of kids that I am guessing are 8/9th graders.
Watching the poor young men try to figure out how to catch the eyes of the cute girls has been pretty funny. They really are like young hunting dogs. Spending a ton of effort without any real idea of what they are doing.
I want to yell the same thing at them that my father told me: “Just ask them for it. They are just as horny as you are and will be willing to fool around if you just ask.”
Of course, I didn’t believe that old man back then, so why would they listen to me?
Yoga class?
No, I’m down in New Hope today. This seems to be an unlicensed day care. A bunch of kids killing time here until their parents pick them up.
The owner is more patient than I would be. It is tiring watching all the pointless grabass going on.
As opposed to the meaningful grabass, which I applaud.
STEVE SMITH SAY NO GRABASS IS POINTLESS. IT’S VERY POINTED.
You mean staring at them from across the room doesn’t work? Damn! /my stupid JHS method
It doesn’t sound like it’s working for Jimbo, either.
It better not either. I don’t want the Little Cardinal to even be tempted by any of the jail bait running around here.
For the most part, I’ve just been staring in disgust at the lunkheads who think the proper response to a girl laughing an putting her hand on their arm is to a) punch their friend (male of course), b) make fart noise with their hands or c) all of the above.
Youth is wasted on the young.
Aaaaaaaaaa!
The young lady at the next table has decided that staring longingly at the idiot boy on the other side of the table (who keeps staring at his phone or the tops of his shoes) isn’t working. So she just moved her chair to be on the same side of the table.
Will this bold move work? So far the prognosis doesn’t seem good. The only indicator that he has even noticed is that he is now typing IM messages even faster.
I want to smack this kid already.
Maybe he’s just not interested in ladies, but she thinks she can convert him?
Now she is on her phone texting people too.
Maybe there is a chance? Will they end up texting each other?
Pan, no he looks like he probably like gals. He doesn’t seem to be flamboyant at all.
His scraggly fuzz on his chin seems to indicate he doesn’t have a flambouyant bone in his body.
Pope, as a former teen boy I’ll just say that he may not be interested in her.
As a former teen boy myself I was always interested in any girl that even nodded an acknowledgement of my existence. My, my, how times have changed.
Vox is at it again
Others applauded the decision, citing the economic boost that would come with 25,000 jobs in each region over the next 12 years. But even that claim seems dubious given the tight labor market. Which leads me to my next point: The US economy doesn’t need more Amazon jobs.
———-
But in today’s economy, cities and states shouldn’t be so obsessed with creating more jobs. There are plenty of jobs in urban areas like Washington, DC. Raising wages, which would also boost consumer spending and raise tax revenues, is the most pressing issue.
What a nonsensical blathering mess.
Blah blah blah a centrally planned economy is what we need, apparently. We sure as Hell don’t need people like Bezos putting his tech operations anywhere he wants and poaching software people from the FBI and CIA. He should be hiring janitors, and paying them $80k, I guess.
Uh, no. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the vast majority of people below the poverty line are those who go the whole year without employment, not those who are full-time employment and just don’t get paid enough.
I love it when people instruct me on what I do and don’t need. Making those choices on my own is such a daunting task.
Raising wages, which would also boost consumer spending and raise tax revenues, is the most pressing issue.
And what does this imbecile think leads to higher wages other than greater competition for labor?
Hyper-inflation? Easiest way to get to $20 an hour for everyone.

And Yes
As a former expat, fuck you, Walsh. No representation, no taxation – deal?
Citizens of other countries routinely participate in the elections by voting in person in embassies, consulates and other temporary polling places set up by consular officials (how about US military bases?!). And, of course, only US and Eritrean citizens owe taxes when they live abroad. The US practices are rather inferior.
My Scottish friend was horrified when I told him I had to report my income abroad for taxation purposes. The US laws were also responsible for why it was almost impossible for me to open a bank account.
Fuck FATCA.
I still think the most disgusting part is they went for a cutsey acronym and then backed out halfway. Not even a courage of their douchery!
And, of course, only US and Eritrean citizens owe taxes when they live abroad.
sorta
Difference is that you can declare yourself non-resident once you fulfill certain conditions. Like, according to that 2012 article, Americans sorta could before FATCA.
I want to yell the same thing at them that my father told me: “Just ask them for it. They are just as horny as you are and will be willing to fool around if you just ask.”
*starts setting up GoFundMe for Jimbo’s bail money*
More Voxsplanatin’:
Frustration over stagnant wages is the underlying factor behind widespread workers’ strikes across the country. In addition, congressional Republicans had promised that their massive corporate tax cuts would help the average worker, but the gains have been meager.
Widespread strikes? I guess I missed those. Maybe she means teachers, who aren’t exactly on a subsistence wage. These people live in a universe which exists solely in their own heads, as far as I can tell.
So whatever you do, prevent businesses from opening up which would increase demand for labor and flood the lower end of the labor market with unskilled labor via illegal immigration. That’s sure to work wonders for the job market.
Ask people getting all the new jobs that would not otherwise exist how “meager” their gains have been. Oh, you only care about getting yours? Thought so.
Shorter NPC: Orange Man in power, economy badder than look. Orange man bad.
I loved the SI units when I started my engineering education. They were so much easier to convert and use in equations in my science classes. Then I started my actual engineering classes and the profs expected us to use mixed units and convert between SI and Imperial measurements in the same problem. At the time this seemed like an old man (Prof) holding on to his past. Then I got into industry and it make so much more sense.
All semiconductor Fab units used in manufacturing and design are SI, but all assembly and packaging units are in Imperial.
The assembly sites are all in SI using countries in Asia, but the industry legacy is from the US in 1970’s so they are still using Imperial measurements for the most part.
My profs prepared me for the real world.
Having worked in RF/microwave engineering, SI is the only way to go.
Having worked in construction, Imperial is the only way to go
^this.
I couldn’t imagine trying to get construction guys to do shit in metric. It’d be a fucking disaster.

Huh. I just looked on Bing maps and there are no Walmarts in New York city. That seems so crazy.
Are you kidding? The cost of a standard Walmart-sized parking lot would be prohibitive.
The level of progressive white-knighting that goes on when Walmart tries to set up in some urban areas is ‘prohibitive’ as well.
I believe there was some huge kerfuffle when Walmart tried to set up in one of DC’s ‘food deserts’.
I’ve seen two-story Walmarts with parking garages. It’s rare, but they do know how to accommodate city living.
As I recall, the Walmart on Oahu just west of Waikiki has a multi-level car park. Place is always packed.
No one drives there anyway, so they wouldn’t need the lot anyway.
Not a problem. There are e.g. mall-sized parking lots in Brooklyn anchored by the likes of Best Buy and Kohl’s.
Also, K-Mart was in Manhattan and I know several Targets in Brooklyn that don’t have/need parking lots.
No, WalMart is not in NYC for purely for political reasons.
But Jim Acosta’s press pass is the real due process concern in this country.
Finally! A victim point clarification that needed to happen.
Marcia Fudge may challenge Pelosi for the speakership.
On paper you would think that black woman beats white woman. But wait! Black woman might not have been properly observant of the new rules regarding LGBT thinking. So is not being sufficiently pro-gay enough to erase the bonus African American points of Fudge?
The chamber will be packed for that vote.
Dammit!
I was trying to work that one out.
Speaking of stupid self-inflicted fights….
Looks like the Millenials have shown up in Congress with their usual sense of entitlement.
The n00bs think that seniority on committees is so old and broke.
DeFazio just doesn’t want to give up his Dart or the plane ride to his NZ properties. Still has no compunction about burying the rest of us with big gov though. Fuck that PoS.
I’d laugh myself silly if DeFazio shoots himself in the foot over this (the BS climate “kids” lawsuit is in his district), but I’m sure he’ll spin this and retain his loyal following.
They don’t seem to get that the whole point of ratcheting up government power is that you have to do it in small steps.

Did we find the only democrat who supports Trump?
There are shitloads of democrats that support Trump. They just reverse carpetbagged in 2016.
Sigh…
On one hand, I want to know how to “reverse carpetbag”.
On the other, I fear the answer will be in a form of a YouTube link.
Carpetbagging is something we ‘Muricans learn about in 7th Grade.
No, I get the concept, I just thought basic “carpetbag” was universal way to depict someone moving where they aren’t wanted but hustle is better (e.g. Hilary Clinton to NY for a Senate seat), I’m not sure how you “reverse carpetbag” – you leave a place you don’t belong to go back home even though the hustle is worse there?
Carpetbagging = Northern, urban Republicans moving South to push local government Republican.
Reverse Carpetbagging = Southern and Mid-Western Rural Democrats moving “North” to push the GOP to a “Hard Hat” Democrat platform.
Ooooooh!
Me right now.
As I sit in Phoenix Sky Harbor, sipping a double Makers Mark, I was happy to see that travel is over.
Magical thinking- it’s whaT’s for dinner.
All across America, university towns are thriving. Their skilled workforces and research activities draw in business investment, while their medical facilities and high quality of life attract residents from smaller rural towns.
As a result, there are a lot of ideas for how public policy can help turn small and decaying rural towns into slightly bigger and more prosperous college towns. One way is simply to start new universities and put them there, and in fact I once suggested that the federal government create a system of elite universities, much like the one that exists in India. (The idea is slowly becoming more popular.)
I have now come to believe, however, that this idea has inherent limitations.
No shit, Shirley?
But we shouldn’t let that stop us.
One of America’s greatest strengths is its network of public and private universities. One of the country’s greatest challenges is how to revitalize its rural areas. By upgrading the assets it already has, the U.S. can make regional economies more relevant and competitive. If the next Congress is looking for an effective economic policy to address the declining fortunes of rural America, it should help smaller, less well-known colleges expand their research activity and maximize their economic impact.

New data shows that the majority of Americans describe their neighborhoods as suburban. Yet we still lack an official government definition of suburban areas
No official government definition of “suburb”?
Good gravy. We don’t even deserve to be considered a first world country.
How can they even know, if the government doesn’t define it for them?

My parents keep leaving during thanksgiving, that is probably why.
I found out about libertarianism through my dad because he voted for Andre Marrou.
Hell a couple Thanksgivings back my dad was trying to learn how to sign up for Twitter just to follow Trump. I think he deleted the app by the end of dinner.
This is something I heard (paraphrased):
‘Based on Mitocondrial and Y-chromosome genetic testing, something like twice as many women as men have reproduced over the history of humans’ (time averaged I suppose).
Is this true?
If so, was most of that during prehistory? It seems to me that the institution of marriage was invented partially to rectify this, or rather, may have become popular and beneficial to society as it addressed the issue of unmatched males. Does the prevalence of divorce/lack of fucking by millennials mean a return to the historic average (2x as many women have children as men)?
Government encouragement seems to be playing a part.
something like twice as many women as men have reproduced over the history of humans
I wouldn’t be surprised if that statement is true. Before DNA testing, you couldn’t really be sure of paternity.
It definitely confirms by biases. Healthy/high status males are more attractive and can afford to spread some love around, women are choosier and won’t sleep with some men. Add in that effective contraceptives weren’t typically in use in the past, and that makes a smaller portion of males (the virile ones) even more likely to have offspring, I’d think.
If anything two-to-one seems low, especially during pre-history. OTOH I think the bulk of humans have lived during historical times so that would skew the ratio down.
I’d imagine that throughout history men tended to have far higher mortality rates for a variety of reasons. Being the hunters, being the fighters, and being the ones with the risky and back breaking jobs. Lower class men likely died before having a chance to reproduce. I mean, in the 20th century alone, you had the two great wars. It’s actually not quite so easy to find a breakdown of casualties by gender (at least, a quick Google search didn’t give it to me). But you had countries losing half their populations. I’d imagine even looking at civilian deaths, men would be greatly over represented for a variety of factors.
I also think you have to question how much agency women even had in various times and cultures.
Russia in 1950, for instance, had 76.6 men for every 100 women.
Seems you would get a potentially conservative answer just saying all battlefield casualties were male and the rest split based on gender. The more pertinent problem would be that battlefield casualties are disproportionately *young* men.
A lot? They may have been forced into marriages at times(so were men, depending on place and time), but that didn’t always prevent flings.
Oh, also polygamy. Totes cool for most the world, during most of history iirc.
I started out drinking some Miracle on 10th Ave and am now drinking some Devious Imperial Pumpkin. Miracle on 10th Ave is pretty good, and I’m surprised at how much I like the Devious Imperial Pumpkin.

Costco’s in house mashed potatoes are delicious. No need to start from scratch.
I grabbed some ribs from the Costco “deli” case not long ago. They were quite delicious when I took them home and heated them up. Will eat again.
Peanut Butter Cup Coffee Porter
Paging Teenage Girl…
Eeew!
Don’t knock it until you try it. It’s not as sweet as it sounds.
Although I don’t understand why Willoughby’s feels the need to put “cup” in the name. Or “coffee” for that matter. Peanut Butter Porter seems descriptive enough; and sounds less teenage-girly.
They use peanut butter, chocolate, and coffee in it. It seems so much less special now that I’ve got several six packs of it in the basement. And there’s very little sweetness in it. Still not as good as their Nut Smasher though.
huh, I assumed it was just PB infused in a porter like most places do. I only had that one a year ago, but I don’t remember it tasting remarkably different than other PB porters I’ve had. I mean; chocolate and coffee are two flavors already present in Porters, so it seems kind of redundant to infuse more.
That should be a career ending statement more for it’s stupidity than the threat.
Stupidity is a disqualifying factor for a Congressman?
