      1. Count Potato

        Wouldn’t that be an M1?

        1. Hereabouts we hunt tofu with .22 pistols, else there’s damn little sport in it.

      2. Chafed

        I’d read that.

Well, he could be swallowed by volcano tomorrow and he didn’t want to die without knowing.

          1. dbleagle

Some background. That crater was erupting without stop since 1983. The lava was continuously almost to the rim and flowing out down the flanks through various tubes. On April 30, 2018 a series of large earthquakes collapsed the the magma chamber below it and the main Kilauea summit crater, draining both. On May 3rd the new eruption sequence started miles away. Both craters on top have emptied.

Is this a continuation from the early days? Those were awesome.

    1. Nephilium

Just to carry on what was asked in the last thread, I’m not looking for beers you like, but flavors. Let me know those, and I can probably guide you towards an IPA that you like.

      1. westernsloper

Flavors? I like beer flavored beer. I don’t know what you mean. Like chocolate, coffee……? I get those in porters and stouts. I am not a fan of citrusy beers, but did have a peach beer in Australia that was damn good.

        1. Nephilium

I actually just mean flavors that you like. If you like chocolate and coffee, that’s a start. Not a fan of citrus, got it. How do you feel about mango and papaya?

And it’ll take several weeks before it gets to homebrewing. For as much as beer is looked down upon, it’s one of the more complicated alcoholic beverages to make.

        2. Do you dare to drink a peach?

      2. westernsloper

Oh, and I look forward to your article. Home brewing has been on the to do list for years.

      3. Chafed

I like citrus, coffee, chocolate, and whatever flavor applies to Weis bier.

I’ll finish that yoga article someday. I keep changing how I want to do it. I also realize few people would be interested in reading it.

    1. westernsloper

      Very early days. Good stuff.

    2. SP

Try this link. That other one doesn’t seem to be working.

Oh, I like that! Thank you.

          1. straffinrun

Can’t find any English translations of that song. Starts with something like, “My room that faces west is always filled with your smell. If I have to live alone, in order to remember you, I’ve left the scratches in the wall.”

        2. Gustave Lytton

This is just bizarre. Are you looking at my Youtube history? I’ve been on Teresa Teng kick lately and was listening to her in another tab. Sadly died far too young. Also the high note music lounge channel.

Here she is singing Zhou Xuan’s “When will you come back?”.

          1. straffinrun

She’s awesome. Kind of a Japanese (actually Taiwanese) Karen Carpenter in that every note is spot on.

          2. Gustave Lytton

And I know her mostly as a Mandarin singer, although I knew she sang in Japanese. I can listen to the The Moon Represents My Heart over and over.

Zhou Xuan also died early. Her original version from 1937. Register is way too high for today’s ear, but I still like it. And the accordion accompaniment. Sounds like polka.

            Also, both – 林.

          3. straffinrun

No idea what she’s singing about, but it’s nice background music. Makes me want to be “diligent”.

          4. CPRM

Uhm Aktually *pushes up glasses and adjusts leiderhosen* Polka is classified as such by it’s timing as a ‘two step’. This is more akin to an Irish ballad on a squeazebox.

  11. Luther Baldwin

Shucks I didn’t see the new post. I hate to repeat myself but… I thought this might be news you can use:

Chicken stroganoff is a flavor combination that does not work.

    1. Gustave Lytton

My stepmom used to make turkey tetrazzini when I was a kid. I miss it.

      1. Luther Baldwin

        turkey tetrazzini

Heh I’ve only ever seen that in a Stouffer’s version – which means it must be a 50s classic. But yeah, it was delicious.

    2. Spudalicious

      Breasts or thighs?

    3. SP

Um…I imagine that’s true. Sour cream is an abomination.

      1. Luther Baldwin

See, I really like sour cream. And mushrooms. And I really like chicken. What could possibly go wrong?

        1. AlmightyJB

Yeah, I would totally be on board with some paprika and black pepper.

      2. Count Potato

        No, it isn’t.

        1. You have to remember SP is using tofu cream.

          1. AlmightyJB

            I can’t even.

      3. SoberPhobic

I don’t care for old cream either, normally I’ll sub cream cheese.

    4. Count Potato

      Why not?

      1. Luther Baldwin

It just tasted disgusting. Which is probably why nobody does it.

        1. Luther Baldwin

I should add this was Lipton’s stroganoff to which I added my own chicken, not something I found in a restaurant or a store.

          1. Count Potato

            Ah.

          2. Tulip

We’ve found the problem. Make your own and I promise it works.

          3. Luther Baldwin

I imagine the flavor combinations would have to be different though. This junk, while beneath many, tastes fine to me with any kind of beef.

    5. CPRM

Hm, I made chicken stroganoff for the first time a few weeks ago and it was really good, but then again I didn’t use a ‘Lipton’s stroganoff’, whatever the hell that is.

    6. Mojeaux

Chicken stroganoff is a flavor combination that does not work.

      This is true.

      1. Nephilium

I’m starting to think there’s not a difference.

        1. kinnath

          Well, there’s:

          1) Trying to do good, but fucking up. {Incompetence}

          2) Trying to do bad, and succeeding. {Corruption}

    Drinking BIF #3. Squatch Ale

A nice beer, but not exactly to style for a wee heavy. A bit on the dry side (but that’s how they describe it, so it must be intentional) and bit on the hop-forward side.

    1. Nephilium

A hop forward wee heavy? I’m now intrigued. How does it compare to a hop forward American barleywine?

      1. Yusef drives a Kia

Bigfoot BW, Sierra Nevada, that’s hop forward

      2. kinnath

        I don’t do barleywines, so I can’t compare.

This beer has the classic caramel and roast aromas, and it’s getting better as it warms up.

The flavor also has good caramel and roasty malts, and it’s getting better as it warms up. At this point, the malt and hops are in better balance than when it came out of the fridge. Still, wee heavy is supposed to be sweet and malt dominant.

I get annoyed when beer styles that are not supposed to be heavy on hops get a little boost in the hops to make IPA drinkers happy I guess. I don’t like IPA, but I don’t begrudge the market for making products that a lot of people like. When I go to a brew pub and look at the menu, I look for the styles where malt is supposed to be the reason for the beer to exist. It’s frustrating when the brewer ups the hops just to up the hops. The worst case I ever saw was an Irish Red with about 60 IBUs.

        1. kinnath

          To be clear. The beer is not bad. It’s actually quite tasty. It’s just not to style. {homebrewer and competitor bitching about style guides and judges}

          1. Yusef drives a Kia

I’m sure you know your Beer types and styles but Marketers don’t know shit, you may miss out on good beer

          2. Nephilium

I appreciate the styles just for the fact they produce guidelines. However, I’m always upset when I get a beer that claims to be a style and is so far off it just is wrong (the most recent case of this was a “Kolsch” that tasted of caremel and residual sugars). My complaint about the judges is when I get dinged for something that’s directly in style (like an American Stout that got dinged for having some astringency and coffee notes).

Wee Heavies are also one of those styles I don’t care for, so hearing hop forward intrigued me. And at the ABV, it seems like it would almost fall into a Barleywine category.

          3. kinnath

7.5% ABV is the low end for a wee heavy.

The IBUs are in the middle of the acceptable range. If the beer was not on the dry side, the hops would have been in better balance. And it was much better at “cellar” temperature than coming out of the fridge.

        2. Yusef drives a Kia

I prefer Ales, Stouts and Sours, but IPAs are everywhere, some good some…… Remember to look at the Bottle, a Pale Ale IS NOT an IPA,
          so much good beer

          1. kinnath

I prefer sours, sours, and sours. 😉

That being said, there are other styles that enjoy having every now and then — scotch ale, porter, Belgian double/quads, and saisons (esp. Brett saison). I look for complex grain bills, strong malt flavors, and enough hops to balance sweetness. Or beer that have complex spicey notes (see saison).

          2. Nephilium

Have you had the Boulevard Saison-Brett? And again, if you have a Trader Joe’s in your area, they’ve got their (Unibroue made) Vintage Ale and a (Petrus made) Cranberry Sour.

          3. Yusef drives a Kia

Neph, make Kinnath my BIF send to Guy, I think he will enjoy it!

          4. Yusef drives a Kia

Hmm, I don’t Want to drive to Claremont, but I think I must…..
            (Petrus made) Cranberry Sour.

          5. kinnath

            Have not had the Saison-Brett.

I have Love Child #9 and the Changeling in the fridge right now.

            Was ist “trader joe”?

Actually, there is one about 40 miles away from where I live.

          6. Nephilium

The only favoritism I do in the BIF’s is to avoid people shipping to the same people they have in the past and to avoid shipping to someone who’s close enough to drive to (Hyperion, if you want any of the Cleveland beers, I’ll be driving through your neck of the woods in December).

Other then that, I aim for randomness. If I was trying to fix things, we’ve got a Cincinnati brewery and a Cleveland brewery focusing on sours.

          7. Yusef drives a Kia

@Kinnath, my TJs 15 miles away, may as well be forty,

          8. Yusef drives a Kia

Neph, Lack wan’t amenable to my Randomness when we played, no ones fault but that’s how I see it

          9. Nephilium

The Saison-Brett from Boulevard made a friend of mine agree that “sours” can be good. I’ve learned through the years that it’s one that you don’t want to sit on (the Brett overcarbonates the beer). I’ve got about a case of a homebrewed batch we did that involved Brett being pitched at about 40% of fermentation. Trader Joe’s is a grocery store well known for private labeling items in their stores. I unfortunately live 30 minutes away from two of them.

          10. kinnath

And for keeping score. My first BIF was a nice Belgian Pale Ale. The 2nd was a great Saison. And the 3rd was an enjoyable Squatch Ale (but not exactly as scotch ale).

          11. kinnath

Well, I’m done for the night.

Got to get up and dig ditches in the morning.

Konishiki had some pipes. Around 2003 I was walking down the street and saw a huge line in front of a pachinko shop. Usually there are half a dozen losers waiting for the parlor to open, but that day there were hundreds. I walked to the front of the shop and peeked in to see what was up. Some security guard came up to me and told me to stay in line and pushed me to the very front. I just did what he said and nobody behind me said anything. About 5 minutes later, the doors opened and a big curtain was hanging down. Drum roll and then the curtains opened, revealing Konishiki sitting on a stool. The MC yells out in Japanese, “Rock, paper, scissors…” so I throw out paper. Konishiki rolled out stone and everybody cheers. He shook my hand (giant paws on that guy) and they take our picture. He signs a tee shirt with “Yokozuna” printed on it. I left with it and continued down the street. I think I got it somewhere in the house here.

          1. CPRM

Yeah, what neph said minus whatever nerd talk he was talking about.

          2. Yusef drives a Kia

I’m a wargamer now To be sure, (SOAVE SIGHTING!) I’m just a Terraniac, thanks CPRM

*admits the real reason he’s not a table top gamer is because he doesn’t have enough friends* *drinks more Red Dog*

            It’s all good.

/points at old board game articles.

/tosses CPRM a Willoughby Peanut Butter Cup Porter Coffee stout

          7. Yusef drives a Kia

every one of my boards has a story behind it, I need to explain what’s going on. Tales need telling, the Game just moves the story along,
Creativity and imagination are the fun parts,

          8. Yusef drives a Kia

Thank you, I was looking for that, my concern was the road, so maybe I’ll paint dark road and grey mountains,
            good call,

        2. Tundra

There is a lot of blue in fresh snow, especially in places without pollution. Just sayin’

          1. CPRM

Blue snow? You Sotans fuck everything up.

          2. Yusef drives a Kia

Saw a video that showed that, a Must, good call Tundra, you”l like what I do…….
            /Going for Snow, Swamps later

          3. CPRM

The only time I’ve seen blue snow is in photos where the white balance was off.

  20. Yusef drives a Kia

I should save this for another time, But I am a fool for mods, Cars, Grinders, lawnmowers, A/C systems, don’t forget Programming anything they can build, I’ll make it just a little bit Cooler, or easier to use. I didn’t ask for this curse, but it sure is fun!

  21. PieInTheSKy

    good morning glibs

    1. CPRM

Wait, you’re a vampire, so that means it’s night there, but it’s night here…FLAT EARTH CONFIRMED!

    2. PieInTheSKy

Hi Pie! I never get to do that….

    4. Nephilium

It’s technically morning here too. Slainte, SKy or Cake, whichever you’re running with today.

      1. PieInTheSKy

shit got the capital K again

        1. Nephilium

What, you mean Cake (the Turkish one) was the same person as you?

          1. Nephilium

That worked so much worse once I learned what Turkish Delight actually was.

          2. CPRM

Well, old people in the olden days had limited candy reserves, as it wasn’t yet a government run program like…wait, I’m getting word that…the government doesn’t direct the production of candy? This can’t be true…

          3. Nephilium

I’m beginning to get upset that I have a Halloween strategic candy reserve… perhaps I should stop buying things I like.

          4. CPRM

Even though I JUST had half a pack of Starbursts, I’m not usually a sweets/candy guy. My carbs tend to come from beer and french fries.

      2. Yusef drives a Kia

No, it’s 9:16 but your on the old clock, as in later than us…..

    1. CPRM

Well, I see you like Megadeath, so that is settled. Here is one of my favorite metal vocalists working in the confines of that high pitched ‘metal’ that prevails these days.

      1. Yusef drives a Kia

Nevermind, music was a Plus, Screamy Grinders are Amateurs at best, try again….

        1. CPRM

-1 Old Man Yusef from my cool kids party.

          1. Yusef drives a Kia

I’ll be onstage in AZ within 1 year tops, Old man my Ass!
            I fucking bring it

          2. CPRM

Get a bit more aggressive with the vocals and you got something akin to Buckcherry goin on.

          3. Yusef drives a Kia

Hate the Buck cherry, but I appreciate it just the same, Reggae?

            That’s Right

        2. Nephilium

Meh. Fuck Pantera, when I met them back in the 90’s they were a bunch of cunts. Dropkick Murphys have been the most friendly band towards fans I’ve seen in a long time.

          1. Yusef drives a Kia

            Face it, your too cool,

          2. Nephilium

Words that have never been told to me in my life. I was wearing a Sabbath shirt when I met Pantera, and the band gave me shit for it (mind you, I was coming from a Catholic High School just to get a signed picture). I’ve seen the Dropkicks tell off bouncers at a show before.

  24. Yusef drives a Kia

    The question?
    Is it a good Song?
    Or is it good Metal?

  25. Yusef drives a Kia

  29. Nephilium

Alright, night all. And I look forward to all of the home mazers, brewers, and wine makers to tell me everything that’s wrong in the introduction to fermentation tomorrow.
