Vegan School: Turmeric Latte

My electrophysiologist told me to eat more anti-inflammatory foods to help my heart problem. He recommended turmeric, ginger, and green tea (among others).

This past week I’ve been drinking a cup of green tea and a turmeric latte daily.

I was unhappy with the turmeric latte recipes I found, so I made my own. This recipe is quick, simple, cheap, and delicious. (Don’t worry: it doesn’t taste like curry.)

I use fresh local honey as a sweetener. I buy turmeric in bulk anyway. I am partial to this brand of turmeric. And this brand of ginger.

I currently use soy milk because that’s what I have in the house, but it’s delicious with Oatly oat milk.

Turmeric Latte

  • 1/4 tsp turmeric
  • 1/4 tsp ginger
  • 1/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 2 turns freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 dash iodized salt
  • 6 oz hot water
  • 6 oz non-dairy milk
  • honey (to taste)
  1. In a coffee cup add the spices, hot water, and non-dairy milk. Stir thoroughly. Add honey to taste. Enjoy.

Hehe. Turmeric is very… calming? It goes in curries, but definitely isn’t a dominant flavor, unless you put a lot.

    1. Lackadaisical

There is also some evidence to show it does have an anti-inflamatory effect, potentially also on the brain. I read one study showing that taking turmeric regularly can delay the onset of old-age neurological problems. Also, it is good for sore throats.

  2. Spudalicious

I tried turmeric capsules for arthritic inflammation. My stomach can’t handle that much turmeric.

      1. Scruffy Nerfherder

I don’t think you’re supposed to take it that way.

      2. Spudalicious

I puke in your general direction.

  3. Not Adahn

Why would you deliberately spill honey on a tablecloth?

  4. Sean

I won’t post any snarky “needs more bacon.”. ?

Instead, I’ll point out that TGIF’s now carry Vegan Beyond Burgers and will also serve their burgers “green” (on lettuce instead of bread).

  5. Tundra

    Nice!

I make a similar one, except I use cayenne pepper instead of the pumpkin spice. I’m told that pepper helps turmeric absorption.

Yeah. It’s a classic. A great culmination of sounds from LA from the Paisley Underground, punk, goth, jangle scene. I see a rabbit hole, I may have to go down.

The things I don’t know. I need me some anti-inflammatoriating. Shall try sans the non dairy milk as I have none. How about 1/2 and 1/2?

    1. Tundra

Coconut or almond milk work great.

      1. westernsloper

        How about 1/2 and 1/2?

        1. Lackadaisical

I am not an expert as all non-diary ‘milk’ tastes disgusting, but since they are usually less rich than even whole milk I’d go that route, or 2% rather than half&half.

        2. Tundra

I’ve never tried it, but why not? It will be pretty rich. Also, dairy is one of those things that some people cut out to reduce inflammation.

          Give it a shot!

          1. westernsloper

I am into football beers now. I will give it a try tomorrow.

  12. westernsloper

Something vegan I just put in a jar for fridge keeping. (there is probably a real way to do this but this is how I do this)

    Candied Jalapenos
    10 japs sliced
6 baby carrots sliced longways into 1/4’s
    1 C water
    1/2 C White Vinegar
    1/2 C Apple Cider Vinegar
    11/2 C sugar

Bring liquid to boil, add sugar and dissolve. Add japs and simmer/slow boil/reduce until mixture is bubbly and thick (couple hours or so). Jar it up and refrigerate. Top burgers, pulled pork, anything.

    1. SP

      That looks great!

    4. MikeS

Oh wow. I’m saving this one.

        1. But Enough About Me

…most seem to be 25%-200% longer than necessary.

This is sadly bang-on. I subscribe to Mr Carlson’s Lab on Youtube and Patreon, and his videos are full of good info but could use serious editing.

I have never fermented anything, and I know those rules, but Cherry Mead? Hell yes..

    3. kinnath

Nothing particularly wrong in the video which is surprising. It’s pretty decent for a youtube mead class — most are full of mistakes.

Note that he is using dark sweet cherries, the most common frozen cherry you will find in the grocery store. Dark sweet cherries are notorious for producing a mead that tastes like cough syrup. I use a blend of 2/3rds tart red cherry and 1/3rd dark sweet cherry. It is very difficult to find frozen tart red cherries. So I generally used 100% pure Montmorency tart red cherry juice. Then I will use frozen dark sweet cherries or 100% dark sweet cherry juice.

I personally do not like K1V-1116 wine yeast. Lalvin 71B or RC-212 is much better (RC-212 in particular works great with cherry).

        The More you Know….
        Good info Kinnath, thanks!

      2. kinnath

kinnath’s recipe for beginner’s cherry mead.

        2 qts water
2 qts Knudsen Just Tart Cherry juice
2 lbs frozen dark sweet cherries
        1 qt (~ 2.75 lbs) blonde honey
        1 pkg Lalvin RC-212 yeast.

        1. Tulip

I really want to like mead (Vikings!), but everything I’ve tried is too sweet. Do you have any recommendations?

          1. kinnath

            1) Make your own.

The recipe above will ferment to dryness around 14% ABV. I normally back sweeten to semi-sweet, but cherry mead works great bone dry too.

            2) Visit a good meadery.

Lots of commercial meads are sold sweet (just like lots of apple cider is sold sweet). The target audience has never tried mead, and the seller is shooting to make women happy by providing a sweet alternative to bitter beer or dry wine.

A good meadery will have some sweet products, but will also have dry, semi-dry, and semi-sweet products for more knowledgeable customers.

          2. DEG

            Kinnath’s advice is excellent.

Earlier today I had some blackberry mead that I brought back from Canada two years ago. It is sweet but not overwhelming so. It’s quite tasty.

          3. MikeS

Make your own, Tulip. It really is easy.

          4. Nephilium

Third on making your own. There’s some articles in the pipeline (I wrote them, so I know) about fermentation, and making your own meads, ciders, wines, and beer.

          5. Tulip

            I will watch for them.

          6. But Enough About Me

If you can get it where you live, look for mead from this meadery. In particular, their Dry Mead was a revelation for me. Every time I go to Alberta I bring back at least one case of their Dry Mead, plus sprinklings of their Traditional (still way drier than anyone else’s) and some of their more idiosyncratic stuff. It’s amazing how good mead can be when it doesn’t taste like liquid candy.

      3. Mmmm, cough syrup.

@ WebD That recipe looks interesting (minus the PP spice *shudders*) I think I might give it a try.

What’s the Oatly stuff taste like? I love milk, but I am lactose intolerant. I’m not big on soy products of any kind, so I’m looking for alternatives. I have tried almond milk, and it’s OK, it just seemed kinda sweet. I’m basically just looking for something that tastes like milk so I can have an occasional glass and also so I can start eating cereal again.

Regarding the article on the Ukrainian wife’s visit to the US: America is the greatest country in the history of the world, and not just by a little bit. What makes it great? Americans, that’s what.
Most people dont understand that. There isnt anything magical about the dirt here. What makes us different than every other country are the ideals that Americans have.

It’s true. In most countries if anyone tries to raise their head up it will get whacked off. In the rest of them you simply cant because of class or guilds.

In much of the non-english speaking world it is known as the big man system. Anyone who has more than everyone else (big man) is expected to give away what he has until everyone is equal. Consequently no one bothers to acquire wealth or accomplish anything and those cultures are, as expected, impoverished.

        2. egould310

I think a lot of the rest of the world doesn’t really understand what we have here in this country. If you’ve never been here, I don’t think you can comprehend the freedom of movement, the abundance, the cleanliness, the diversity, and just how safe it is. And all the stuff. And that stuff is relatively cheap.

What really bugs the establishment types is that their children and grandchildren have more interest in Jay-Z, McDonalds, Nike, and American English then the historical national cultural products. And that may include American ideas of individuality, personal freedom, property rights, right to self defense, etc.

          1. DEG

It’s been a great weekend. I drove from Chicago to Ann Arbor see the Michigan ( my wife’s alma mater) vs. Penn State game. It was my first live Division 1 football game ever. The atmosphere was off the charts but it was an overall boring game because Penn State sucked. Then from Ann Arbor, we drove to Cleveland to watch the Browns vs. Chiefs. I wanted the Browns to win but it was still awesome to see Mahommes in action. And now back on the road back to Chicago.

      1. Ed Wuncler

My boss went to Texas A&M and never went to one football game. We all ripped on him for that. I think it’s partially to do with growing up in Texas and being over exposed to football. And also because he’s a damn hipster.

OT: Just noticed something really weird. When I do an image search on DuckDuckGo for “NPC meme”, the first dozen or so results appear to be blocked; there’s just a graphic of a camera with a circle-and-slash symbol over it. It will show me the image if I click on it, but it’s not showing it in the main image search page. There are some real images further down, and there actually are a few sporadic NPC faces in these images. But I’ve never seen DuckDuckGo do this before… Is it intentional? Also, I checked Google and Bing image searches, and neither of them are doing this.

    1. Tres Cool

Whoa…never mind. I mean it helps, but there are still some censored ones sprinkled through. I knew they wouldn’t let you search for sexy movies, but this is actually worse.

There’s nothing remotely “unsafe” about the blocked ones, either.

          1. MikeS

Yeah. They are completely benign. Must just because of the website they link to?

TBH, I didn’t know what it was all about. So I followed one of the censored images to Breitbart. There was a good article on the whole meme. The last sentence was spot on:

Despite the left’s insistence that the NPC meme is “dehumanizing,” there seems to be no similar outcry from the same people when conservatives on social media are dismissed as “Russian bots” by opponents.

            I just don’t understand it.

The normal search results list KnowYourMeme as the first result, which doesn’t make sense if they were trying to stop people from reading about the NPC meme. Yet, it’s strange that the images seem to be blocked (from preview at least).

I’ve never seen DuckDuckGo do that before. I guess I’ll check back on it in a few days.

Heh. My son just called. He has been helping me collect seed for planting…acorns, walnuts, hickory nuts, persimmon etc. I would have sworn I warned him not to store them indoors. Every acorn has an acorn weevil larvae in it. A little while after an acorn falls the larvae escape from the acorn and crawl away. If you put them in your house you will soon have a zillion little white maggots wriggling all over your floor. They are harmless, but who needs that? Store them outside.

It’s no-nut November. I thought we were all supposed to keep our seed indoors?

I cant believe I let that one get past me.
