I mean, she already look dead. How bad she gonna look undead?
Kristen Bell thinks Snow White tells kids the wrong message about strangers and consent
I was pretty over her when she married that ugly guy, but now she trying to let Snow White die in the woods. Observe this stolen cartoon:

Greetings
Knowing you, they wouldn’t have worked anyway.
But please, turn off the sidebar.
Geez. OK. Such baby.
Yeah, that was off the top ropes for no reason. (Still Lol)
Everyone knows URL’s and A1C don’t mix. Why do you hate science?
[golf clap]
And so early in the thread, to. Well done, Count.
*snicker*
Playoff baseball is brutal. I went to bed at 1:15 am with adrenaline still in my blood. What a game.
All the Indians need is some hitting, and some relief pitching, and some…
At least there’s a good chance they’ll make the playoffs next year again.
How shall we fuck off, oh lord?
Embrace our great American socialism and more letters to the editors
*dons rose colored glasses*
I guess the one good thing of all of this is that these assholes are finally admitting that Roosevelt was a socialist.
MUH ROADS!
Wait, You’ll let me opt out of Social Security and Medicare? DONE!
Well, FDR did insist they are “contributions” not taxes, and we all know contributions are voluntary.
Falser words were never spoken.
Dude has obviously never met anybody who qualified as “poor”. None of them can be satisfied either.
Humans as a whole are never satisfied that is the most basic rule of economics, there are scarce resources to allocate among infinite human needs.
Wait, can I stop sending the government social security taxes in exchange for not getting paid when I’m 65? Because I’ll totally make that trade.
I’m 41. If I were to stop now and invest the money that otherwise would’ve been sent to Social Security I’d end up with more than sending it to the government will net me when I’m 65. Or 67. Or 72. Or whatever the retirement age is then.
I’m 46…I think it’s 72 for our age bracket? I could be wrong on that.
Of course, by the time it actual rolls around, it’ll probably be 75, if there’s anything left.
Just checked, 67 if you were born after 1960 which covers us. But you can start taking reduced benefits at 62. I’m just waiting for SS to be paid back in some new scrip so they can claim they aren’t reducing benefits.
Huh. I don’t know why I was thinking 72. I suppose I just assume it will be 72 at some point.
It needs to be for it to remain solvent long enough for us to get there.
You’ve got a year on me. I would totally take that deal too.
As a 24 year old, fuck yeah I want that deal.
Y’all are wise beyond your years, Grasshopper (s).
Oh, SS will still exist but will put you in the 100 % tax bracket. Only way to save it.
Yo Ponzi! You got some s’plaining to do over here.
No, if you oppose SS, please continue paying into it. You’ll be a hypocrite though if you collect.
I just turned 49 over the weekend, I figure I’ve got about 5 to 6 more years where if I could stop paying SS taxes and shove the money into my 401k that by the time I retire around age 65 a 4% draw of the extra savings would equal or exceed what I can expect to collect from SS
Can I get my FICA taxes given back to me to invest retroactively?
Of course not… they already spent that money.
Hell I’d be satisfied with just an opt out going forward, hell I’d even allow for a forced IRA type situation (non-ideal, but better). I consider the money taken in taxes already gone. Can we get someone to put this idea into Trump’s head?
Hat? Hair? You guys busy?
Democratic socialists of the past were: Roosevelt, Truman and Johnson.
Interesting level of honesty.
gave us socialist benefits.
All programs that are not in the legitimate/legal purview of the US gov’t, per its founding charter. Also, I would call it well-fare, not socialism
Speaking of socialists, has anyone ever debated one that argued in good faith? They seem to always assume the moral high-ground when they definitely do not deserve it, argue with straw-men in their heads, emote all over the place, and just generally not understand opposing positions.
You’re right. The author does not know the difference between welfare and socialism.
Other Democratic socialists of the past were: Roosevelt, Truman and Johnson. The Great Society and the New and Fair Deals gave us socialist benefits.
My great-grandfather was noted for his loud loathing of Roosevelt. Also, my dad’s earliest memories of the guy are of him blowing various things up with dynamite. I’m glad to carry on his legacies. The bloodline is strong.
They left out that asshole Wilson
Too racist. Embarrassing.
How racist is too racist when you might be on a list with FDR and LBJ.
According to my dad, my grandmother would refer to Roosevelt only as “that man” with contempt in her voice.
Henry Ford gave us eight-hour workdays, but why be truthful?
“A day after Mayor Ted Wheeler called out right-wing group Patriot Prayer for bringing a cache of guns to a downtown rooftop before a summer protest, the mayor and police clarified significant details about the discovery and response.
Police said they found four people on top of a parking garage at Southwest First Avenue and Jefferson Street on Aug. 4 with three rifles, all in cases.
A sergeant instructed the men to store the rifles in a locked container in the back of one of their pickups and place any ammunition in a different part of the truck, and they complied. Police made no arrests.
No laws were broken and there was no imminent danger to the public, police said Tuesday.
The follow-up details contrast with a “cache of guns” positioned on a garage rooftop that the mayor, who serves as police commissioner, referenced in a Monday news conference.
Patriot Prayer leader Joey Gibson of Vancouver, who had publicly encouraged supporters to bring firearms to the rally, called Wheeler a liar by suggesting his group had posted snipers looking down over the demonstration site.”

“Patriot Prayer Members Armed With Snipers Positioned Themselves on Roof Ahead of August Protest, Police Reveal”
https://www.newsweek.com/patriot-prayer-members-armed-snipers-positioned-themselves-roof-ahead-august-1171862
Wait, the members were armed with snipers? Or were they armed with assault? Or was it some people had rifles in cases? It’s a good thing they’ve got a journalism degree.
No kidding. I see the Newsweek writer is not only a complete moron but also a lying piece of shit. I am sure this article will be flagged as fake news by the gugles and FB.
I’ve just got this mental image of guys holding other people (who are armed with sniper rifles) by the legs, swinging them around the area.
Don’t be silly. You wield snipers by having them sit on your shoulders.
I think that’s in the next non-hat patch of Team Fortress 2.
Forget it. It’s Newsweek-town.
This Wheeler asshole sounds like a piece of work.
with three rifles, all in cases.
And?
encouraged supporters to bring firearms to the rally
Yea it’s weird that people would want to defend themselves from the actual purveyors of violence (i.e. “Antifa”).
Hey, check out these guys!

I bet they’re gay and their shit looks all fucked up.

I’ve heard about those people. They used to be cool, sorta, but then they got pissy and went and formed their own little clubhouse.
Tony lamented that we won’t let him come over and troll us for years. The fucking balls on that dick.
That’s crazy. What’s wrong about a rehab spa?
The problem with a rehab spa is that they will try to get you to stop having all that fun you were having before you needed to give your liver a break.
I’m sure Tony is well enough versed in rehab spas to be able to critique.
But did he try with decent though contrarian points?
Tony hasn’t had a decently thought out point in his entire miserable life.
His pointy little head would like to disagree
I thought it was well established that “Tony” was actually multiple account handlers. Is that theory no longer en vogue or do we just not give a damn at this point one way or another?
I think it was always the same dedicated troll under that one handle. But there were trolls that posted under multiple handles.
Although, whatever is now posting over there under “Tulpa” isn’t classic Tulpa. Completely different diction and argumentation.
I thought I remembered something about him having conflicting backstories. But since he’s not here… what difference, at this point, does it make?
Oh, he’s here alright.
*narrows gaze*
Pretty sure we disagree on a lot of shit. I mean, I know Tony’s disingenuous, but he’s outright lying there.
“Pretty sure we disagree on a lot of shit.”
No we don’t!
Oh. Wait.
Oh no, that’s next door. It’s being-hit-on-the-head lessons in here.
Both of you shut your lying mouths NOW
Sure, I mean looking at those D-Day models the other day, some think that the German soldiers helmets should be painted Earl Grey and others were confident that Serious Gray was more authentic.
And he obviously didn’t get involved in the arguments about whether Girl 34 was hotter than Girl 23 (both wrong, Girl 19 was the obvious choice – no ink and real boobs).
Heh.
German helmets should be painted RAL 7009.
Unless in Africa, then use RAL 8000.
Germans have standards!
The only echo chamber is Tony’s empty skull.
The atmosphere reminds me of a rehab spa.
He would know from experience.
No opinions allowed that might cause any slight discomfort.
Said with zero self-awareness and awareness of the modern left.
I expect that’s why it posts at reason: spending time among progressives is agonizing.

Pretty cool. The guy the article is about has been a good friend of mine since childhood. Hes a hell of a guy. Its not often a friend of mine makes the news for a good reason.
That is truly awesome. I wish I could give him some business.
The Sleeping Beauty Disney version is much, much less dark (and rape-y) than the fairy tale version.
how about The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty?
Still not as dark as the fairy tale.
Just in case someone doesn’t know, in the fairy tale the prince has sex with her while she’s still asleep, she gives birth to two babies, and then she wakes up after one of the babies sucks on her finger and removes the needle.
Have you ever read the Gaiman reversal of Snow White? And most modern readers have no idea how dark the original fairy tales are, they’re just familiar with the Disney versions.
I have read it… Although I read most of Gaiman’s stuff.
Just read it, apparently you can get it for free. Sugarfree is clearly Neil Gaiman, his editor must have nightmares, God only knows what the original manuscript was like of that’s the cleaned up version.
Sugarfree is clearly Neil Gaiman
Nope. My women shave their armpits.
Gaiman has some really good work out there. Including a Sherlock Holmes/Cthulhu mashup and a horror story for children (that was made into a decent stop action movie). I could keep going, but there’s only so many links I can do. Needless to say, I’m a bit of a Gaiman fanboy (and Good Omens may make me pay for Amazon Prime).
Whoever hit me yesterday owned up, called their insurance, their insurance called my insurance, they’re taking full responsibility so I don’t have to pay my deductible, which is nice. Guess they had damage too that they had no way of explaining.
Plus Progressive gave me a cherry red Mustang convertible as a rental. I don’t think I want my old car back (actually, I do, because gas mileage. It’s still a hell of a lot of fun to drive though)).
I don’t wish the cops on anyone, but didn’t they just open themselves up to a “leaving the scene of an accident” charge?
Maybe, but like you said, I don’t wish the cops on anyone, and I don’t want to tag whoever it was with a criminal record for this, especially if they owned up and I’m getting paid.
Oh yeah, for sure. I was just surprised that someone would do that.
My guess is they panicked and drove off, only for their conscience to kick in.
Takes good, strong morals to do that.
How did he know the details of who he hit? Did he stop, record your plate and THEN flee? That makes no sense.
Well, we work in the same building, so they probably walked down later (it was like 5 hours later when I heard who did it) and took down my plate.
Chased down a hit and runner years and years ago and got her license plate, later took it to the homeowner whose car she’d hit. Turns out she’d gone back and copped to it. The old lady was exultant about what a kind and honest young girl she was. lol
Maybe. It’s unlikely that the cops would pursue that since the vehicle was unoccupied. May not even be chargeable as LTS under those circumstances.
It is. It’s a misdemeanor in Florida.
Whether they’d pursue it is another matter.
I suppose it depends, can they toss his place or just serve a warrant? Does he own a dog?
““leaving the scene of an accident” charge”
Speaking of fairy tales…
But you have to live with the ignominy of being seen driving a red sportscar. Chick/Gay lore has it that guys who buy red sportscars have tiny little penises.
Glad the person did the right thing and it’s not costing you.
Does Metallic Ruby count as red? Asking for a friend.
You forgot the NTTAWWT
So Mohels?
Good to hear the person owned up.
New Jersey Governor is caught up in a rape scandal . One of his staffers is accused of raping another state worker.
The weird twist with this case – there was probably a real rape and it was immediately reported to the police.
Rookie mistake. You’re supposed to wait 35 years. Then you can be famous and get book deals.
But only if you help the democrats in fabricating an accusation to prevent some important game piece in the team blue system of power (education, media, and deep state) from turning over to team red.
“The woman who came forward is also a Murphy official, and has a credible story. Katie Brennan told the Wall Street Journal that Alvarez gave her a ride home, entered her Jersey City apartment on the pretense of using the bathroom and then forced himself on her until she managed to escape.
She immediately reported the assault to her husband, close friend and police, and got a rape kit done in the emergency room. Her accusations and the corroborating statements seem like solid evidence.
And what about his reported offer to pay a $15,000 settlement to shut Brennan up? And another accuser who just came forward, saying Alvarez also sexually assaulted her, back in law school? Claims like Brennan’s often expose a pattern of predatory abuse.”
It sounds more believable than most accusations.
REAL RAPE OR STEVE SMITH THAT ALWAYS QUESTION
STEVE SMITH ALWAYS PROVIDE REAL RAPE
I find it incredible this is being treated as a MeToo story rather than police indifference or political interference.
That’s not incredible. That’s completely unsurprising.

Well, alright then.
A Democratic operative for American Bridge 21st Century, a group founded by David Brock and funded by liberal billionaire George Soros, was arrested Tuesday after the female campaign manager for Nevada GOP gubernatorial nominee Adam Laxalt accused the operative of grabbing and yanking her arm and refusing to let go.
Kristin Davison and other officials for the Nevada attorney general’s campaign said the “battery” left her “terrified and traumatized” — and with bruises on her neck and arms.
“Politics is a little bit aggressive these days, but this is just insane. I’ve never seen anything like it,” Davison, 31, told Fox News on Wednesday.
According to the Laxalt campaign and local law enforcement, Wilfred Michael Stark III, 50, was arrested by the Las Vegas City Marshals on Tuesday evening and remains in custody in the Las Vegas city jail.

Ill-fitting suit tips police off to con man in Tokyo
This sometimes happens in major cities of Japan, as police officers often stand outside police boxes keeping an eye on the area while on duty, and the officer in question later admitted that there was something suspicious about the way Ogawa’s suit didn’t fit.
Ogawa reportedly told the officer off, saying “I don’t have to tell you anything.” He then boarded a train to Kinshicho Station and there locked himself inside a toilet stall…arguably not the best escape route.
Well add Japan to the list of places I can’t go without being harassed by cops.
“For several hours he waited in the stall, all the while refusing to comply with police requests to step out. Meanwhile, the authorities took this time to investigate who they were dealing with and confirmed that Ogawa matched the description of a man involved in the con of an elderly woman in September by a group pretending to be her son over the phone.
Using security footage of the woman’s home, police say they could identify Ogawa picking up 1.8 million yen in cash and walking away. In the video he is said to be wearing the very same poorly fitting suit.”
You figured with all that money he could afford better clothes.
Wait, that’s only $16K.
The Incredibly Fake End of Elizabeth Warren
A long pathetic narrative of lies, cowardice and fraud.
That’s interesting. I did not know that. Do they think they spontaneously appeared?
Aliens?
Probably some kind of mud people created out of earth. Sounds silly until you think woman came from a rib.
Oh yeah, smart guy? Then where’s my extra rib?
Chris Rock got it.
No expert, but i believe a number of (most?) NA indigenous people believe they came from the earth in some way or another. Not sure about what the Cherokee believe.
And we all know how progs love them some creationism, yes indeedy. But if they are pushing their tribal creation myths, then it would be fascinating to see the contortions of progs on one hand scoffing at Abrahamic creation mythology, and on the other hand embracing the Great Buzzard from Galun’lati.
If nothing else, progs are masters at selective outrage and selective scorn. Abrahamic creationism is icky, Galun’lati is fascinating and an important belief system.
Yes, that’s totally fascinating.
I’d love to know whether they are pushing the veracity of their (many, possibly conflicting) creation myths, or whether they believe in parallel evolution. And that parallel evolution thing is going to be a hard sell for progs since there is no fossil record of any hominids except for Homo Sapiens in the Americas, parallel evolution is not supported by evidence, etc.
I don’t know. Progs seem willing to believe any sort of religious bullshit as long as that religion isn’t Christianity.
Or (((them))).
And ironically, progs fellate the least progressive of the three Abrahamic faiths.
Wait, marxism or fascism are Abrahamic?
Curious – I found this series of tweets about the Bering Strait Theory
https://twitter.com/nativeapprops/status/1007325305164443655?lang=en
and the money shot article
I wonder if they can even understand that what they are doing is exactly what young-earth creationists are doing. The as-yet-unexplained gaps in the Bering Strait Theory doesn’t mean that their religious mumbo-jumbo is correct.
T.Rex had those big teeth to eat coconuts, ya know.
Considering that use of the word “coconuts” came form you, oh mighty SF, I should ask for a clarification. Do you meant the thing that hangs of coconut trees, or the ones that hang of the ladies? Cause I was unaware that Raquel Welch was that old…
The world is only 6,000 years old, therefore all animals in the fossil record co-existed with Adam and the Patriarchs up to Noah (and died in the Flood and were fast-fossilized.) Before The Fall, there was no death, therefore all carnivores were plant-eaters.
The Creationist Museum here in Kentucky asserts the T.Rex was not a carnivore, but rather had those huge pointed teeth to help him get through the tough husks of his primary diet: coconuts.
I swear I’m not making any of this up.
http://scienceblogs.com/grrlscientist/2007/03/28/tyrannosaurus-rex-started-out/
I recall that 20+ years ago a further arabesque on the entire baroque structure was that when Genesis talks about G*D separating the waters, and later about opening the vaults of the sky and the earth for the flood, that what it was saying is that the earth was flatter in the before times; the seas were very shallow and the mountains low. And that the entire earth was enveloped in some kind of cloud that resulted in higher barometric pressure and shielding from cosmic rays that meant people lived longer (thus explaining the 800+ year old Methusalehs, etc) and that since lizards never stop growing, this meant that dinosaurs were simply long lived lizards that got really large because of their long life-spans and vigor.
Adam and the Patriarchs.
Their first album is really under-appreciated.
That’s quite a stretch. Seems to me, the researcher is using the currently popular trend of associating anything you don’t like with racism, which is proof of nothing.
Thanks, LH. That purports to be Part 6 of a multi-part article, but their link to “Bering Strait Theory Part 5: The Theory Comes Tumbling Down” no workee and takes you to an unrelated page on their site (currently top article something about Alaska Lt. Gov).
The tweet I posted links to all 6 parts. The website with the story doesn’t. Go figure.
Thanks! I didn’t follow the link to the tweet.
*looks at the Book of Mormon article from last week*
Nah. Too easy.
GMTA
I was thinking it, but I wasn’t going there. The only faith I feel I’m qualified to mock and deserves it is socialism.
I went there, see below.
It is one worth mocking.
Um, I grew up next to the biggest res in Minnesoda and I’ve never heard anything about the Bering Strait one way or the other. I call BS on that.
American Indians hate the Bering Strait theory more than Elizabeth Warren fans hate Trump.
Huh? So they contend they are a human population that didn’t evolve from homo sapiens that left Africa? Do they think they are not homo sapiens or do they contend co-evolution of two interfertile homo sapiens populations from different pre-hominid ancestors (one of which evolved in the Americas from some heretofore unknown primate line?)
Damn your nimble fingers, Sir.
“do they contend co-evolution of two interfertile homo sapiens populations from different pre-hominid ancestors”
They would have to be remarkably unobservant to think that Native Americans can’t have babies with non-Native Americans.
Maybe they believe they came over in spherical boats without airholes from Israel?
I am sure I got a bunch of that wrong.
Savages! Savages! They’re not even human!
The fun thing about the Bering Strait theory is that a.) there’s evidence in the archeological record to support it, and b.) there’s some evidence to support the idea that there were multiple migrations, including some from SE Asia to South America over water, and that subsequent migrant groups “displaced” existing groups.
And by displaced you mean, colonized?
Hush, you.
But you are absolutely right that the multiple migrations theory strongly implies that there was conflict. Of course since there are no records or (known) archaeological evidence they can claim that the newcomers were peaceful and were welcomed with open arms.
they can claim that the newcomers were peaceful and were welcomed with open arms
Which accords perfectly with the known behavioral patterns of the species homo sapiens. Science FTW!
FUCK DAT!
Disney says that the native americans, like all animals, were always peace loving hippies!
I’m sure existing populations just scooted over so that the newcomers had plenty of room, like people on a bus or in an elevator. All very polite and not at all rapey or stabby, to be sure.
I grew up near a reservation in AZ, my school had a decent sized Papago contingent, and the Bering Strait thing never came up. One thing that di raise serious indian hackles in AZ was when archaeologists came across multiple sites with cannibalism associated with the late Anasazi culture. THAT got, and still gets, the Hopi and Zuni tribes seriously pissed since it doesn’t fit into their narrative.
I find that odd since the H/Z coalition is the only successful uprising that forced a European power to abandon ground and NM has a statue of the the leader (Pope) in the US Capitol building. They revolted in 1680 and Spain did not return to northern NM/AZ for 12 years.
Spain did not return to northern NM/AZ for 12 years.
That’s like 2months in inflation-adjusted time.
Maybe the whole DNA thing was to throw those nosy reporters off the scent of Warren flip flopping on gaming and going full in on supporting a new casino in MA.
Why am I not surprised that a) Warren is a puritan opposed to gambling and b) not so committed that she cannot be bribed.
How can she be a native american if she is not pro-casino, huh? Does she not know how this is supposed to work?
It’s kind of complicated but what other people have commented on here is basically the idea. Originally a number of Native Americans contested the Bering Strait theory as it contradicts the plethora of special creation myths for various groups. However, there is some evidence now that the original Bering theory is/was too simplistic. That is, the original theory is of the land bridge migration followed by gradual diffusion south & east. But there is (relatively) new evidence that, as the original population grew, small groups traveled south along the west coast of North America and then moved inland.
As to the religious side of it, it does get interesting. I know someone who teaches at a school where, among the annual lectures is one for Native American subjects and one for medieval subjects, the latter often being about religious material. The Native American lecture is always preceded by a prayer. The person who runs the medieval lecture, when I’ve talked with them, rolls their eyes in tolerance and says, “Imagine if I had a Catholic priest pray at the start of my lecture.”
So who wants to try a bizarre mix pack of beers? The brewery (based out of Cincinnati) only does sour beers, and has had some success. I may have to take a detour on the way home one day from work, as there’s a place (about 20 minutes) out of the way that will be carrying these.
I am in.
Sorry about failing y’all on the links. Work emergency…
This would be the day to do it. Really not much happening other than a nice scalping and a disappointing ending to a baseball game.

No need to apologize.
Oh those crazy dudes from the Stans.
Is that a Caucasian Ovcharka? Looks like it will be a massive dog.
The first month or so with a new puppy, I’ll pick it up by the scruff of the neck after an accident in the house.
I picture Vlad telling his guys to polonium that dude afterwards.
Yup, don’t see the problem, that’s how momma dogs carry pups, right?
that’s how momma dogs carry pups, right?
Yes, as evidenced by how passive that dog was while being carried like that. But while that is the proper way to carry a puppy, it’s an unconscionable way to treat your “fur baby”.
The Miami Herald endorses DWS.
It’s a heavily gerrymandered district that’s 70%+ registered democrat, so she’ll win big like always.
Also, LOL at the bolded part.
Especially when immediately followed by a whole list of the things that most certainly were not the FF’s intent.
“She’s a dumb, evil, liar and cheat, but she’s our dumb, evil, liar and cheat.”
^This. Once again they are running an unpopular, corrupt candidate and their best argument is “not as bad as the opponent” with a minor chorus of “seniority.”
Wasserman Schultz took the same test Warren did. It came back 95% Crisco Indian.
Keith Ellison also took the same test. It came back 50% Slapaho.
Nice.
+1 Trail of “Why You Cryin’, Bitch?”
*audible chuckle*
Gary Johnson has no idea what that is.
Let’s play who am I:
This politician hired foreign nationals who spied on Congress.
This politician used their position of power to interfere with an investigation of said individuals.
Who and I?
“Who and I…” – Eddie Rabbit
…… “just WHO and Iiiiiiii” – Crystal Gayle
Here, by the way, is the South Florida (Fort Lauderdale) Sun-Sentinel’s endorsement, which makes the above look like nothing.
“Throughout her 25-year career, Wasserman Schultz has been a consistent supporter of traditional liberal values. She favors, for example, a $15 minimum wage, environmental protections and appropriate gun control. She’s strong on Everglades restoration, on protecting Social Security and Medicare, and on the Affordable Care Act. She’s an opponent of Trump’s tax program that, she believes, exacerbates income inequality.”
Those aren’t liberal values. Those are progressive values – if you can call them that.
#takebackliberalism!
It’s amazing what passes for logic these days…”She has never lost an election. She must be doing something right.”
So, George W. Bush, Ron Paul, et al, were all doing something right?
Well technically Ron Paul did lose a few Presidential Elections.
That said I really fail to see why that would be considered a positive attribute for a politician. I mean yeah winning elections is kind of important for them but that doesn’t say anything about how good of a job they do which is what an endoesment should be based on….
newspaper endorsment…
I wonder if the asshat that wrote this was paid to do so, or if it was just done out of pride and joy.
SO how can we attract more variety of opinion to this site? Lets get some lefties up in this joint.
Or lets do a debate thing when a glib is randomly selected to be a lefty for a day and he needs to come with plausible left wing opinions
Oooh, can I be Tony? I could probably come up with a plausible Tony.
+1 Bus Pregnancy
JB’s car was hit yesterday…should he pee on a stick too?
nono no trolls. Just a naive, somewhat honest, vaguely well meaning leftist.
These are rare
We could pretty easily make a Tony post generator like the op-ed generator for Tom Friedman.
Instead of just the Smith family and ZARDOZ, perhaps a Devil’s Advocate account?
That would require actual work, and we all know none of us works.
Don’t trigger Rufus
Get Titor to come back.
12 years of public school and then public university. Half a century of statist bullshit from the media. Friends and family that spout the same tired lines about how “taxes are the price we pay for civilization”. Do I really need more exposure?
I did this for CPRM’s philosophy post. You’re welcome!
There is a lot of diversity of opinion here already, despite what our critics may say. Witness the near-daily open borders vs closed borders debates.
The problem with importing leftists, as pointed out by others, is that they bring with them Trolls. While I don’t want an echo chamber, the time-wasters and screechers were a weakness of TOS.
I would prefer to keep the discussions between people that pay attention to reality, facts, logic, and consider appeals to emotion to be immediate disqualifiers to any argument made. If you find that unicorn amongst the leftists, I would be glad to have them here for however long they remain leftists (not possible once you stop living in lala emotional land).
The problem with this is that our parodies of progressive opinions and talking point are in fact their actual opinions and talking points.
Is there a charter for the site?
I came for practical libertarian perspective and stayed for the string of daily take-downs of statists in the links.
Some questions that are open for me:
a/ what’s the practical perspective on American governance based on what is possible (to undo) in my lifetime (office-holding, policy, taxes)
b/ what are the practical personal vectors for commercial success that avoid bureaucracy
c/ how to shield one’s wealth from chaos, politics as normal, and the Federal Reserve.
d/ how to sell a philosophy that promises hard work, personal accountability, and no free shit

I don’t have any interest in a plausible left wing opinion. I do have many concerns about the principles driving this administration and the infant at its head, but there’s not much to be said about that here since it’s always met with something like I’d-rather-be-ass-raped-by-a-horde-of-porcupines-than-critique-the-president-btw-Hillary-sucks….yeah, I knew that already.
Why don’t you write those concerns up as an article?
My introduction to the Glib commentariat on TOS was a bit shocking. I had replied to one of the trolls there (trolls then being as new to me as commenting on a site), and y’all jumped my shit, telling me not to engage it, not to look it in the eyes, etc., haha!
Hi. This is Wilford Brimley. Welcome to Retardation: A Celebration. Now, hopefully with this book, I’m gonna dispel a few myths, a few rumors. First off, the retarded don’t rule the night. They don’t rule it. Nobody does. And they don’t run in packs. And while they may not be as strong as apes, don’t lock eyes with ’em, don’t do it. Puts ’em on edge. They might go into berzerker mode; come at you like a whirling dervish, all fists and elbows. You might be screaming “No, no, no” and all they hear is “Who wants cake?” Let me tell you something: They all do. They all want cake.
That’s the one! Btw, I went to that brewery in your ‘hood when I was out west this summer. Tasty! Thanks for the recommendation.
Awesome. I was there Tues. night. I really do love that place. Stormbreaker is probably my favorite brewery in town and we have a ton of them. Glad y’all enjoyed it.
I think the 6 lefties capable of independent critical thinking and arguing in good faith are already working for Glenn Greenwald
And starting to sound more libertarian by the day.
To be honest, I could use a good no-holds-barred coddling. Or nine.
So dumb that you can’t make it up.
Within 24 hours of actress Keira Knightley announcing her ban on the films “Cinderella” and “The Little Mermaid” for her three-year-old daughter for sending false messages on female empowerment, “Frozen” actress Kristen Bell blasted “Snow White” for teaching girls false messages about consent and talking to strangers.
Speaking with Parents, Bell expressed how she loves reading to her daughters and discussing the stories every time they put the book down. In the case of “Snow White,” Bell used that to teach the girls a lesson about consent and talking to strangers….
“Don’t you think that it’s weird that the prince kisses Snow White without her permission?” Bell says she has asked her daughters. “Because you cannot kiss someone if they’re sleeping!”
She was going to die without the kiss, so…context maybe?
They thought she was dead. So this is necrophilia!!!
Why is she confusing Snow White with Sleeping Beauty?
Because she’s retarded?
Snow White had to be kissed too.

It’s like JB doesn’t even Disney, bro.
The kid never liked the older Disney movies.
Now Frozen? Princess and the Frog? Brave? Tangled? Those have been obsessions.
Nice little wokester you’re raising there.
I look forward to that kid’s tell-all book someday.
“Mommy Dumbest”
Don’t care still would
Later, the actors’ children died easily avoidable deaths. Watching from his throne in the astral plane, Carl Jung smiled.
Can’t wait for her to tell the kid the “Boy Who Cried Wolf” story. Make it the “Skank who cried Rape” story and the moral is still the same.
I don’t know why sports outlets are claiming that fan ‘robbed’ the Astros of a HR. Even if he just stood there and did nothing a) others would have tried to catch and b) still would have been interference. It was just plain bad luck and a natural instinct. It’s not like he reached over the fricken wall. His hands were pretty much behind it. I see nothing wrong in what happened.
Also, Aguilar kept his foot a tad too long. He was being coy and Machado responded in kind.
They both knew what they were doing. It was a typical ‘get under the skin’ action we see in sports. Move on.
I am in no way triggered by talk of “playoffs/ball/fan/wall/interference.” Nosiiiiiiiireeeee.
No sarcasm. Fuck Alex Gonzalez for booting that double play ball.
Thank you for being a sane Cubs fan who blames Gonzalez and not Bartman.
I saw a good documentary on Bartman. It was sad as fuck. That guy went through some serious hell.
And then they won and were all like ‘hey come have a drink dude! all is forgotten!’
Humans are wretched creatures as Machiavelli wrote.
Some d-bags walked around the stadium after the Red Sox WS win in 2004 with a “We forgive you, Bill Buckner” banner. Buckner, properly, was of the opinion that he didn’t need any goddamn forgiveness.
Buckner didn’t need forgiveness. The manager did for having a guy with 2 bum ankles in the game at that point in time. Also the real blame lies on Calvin Schiraldi anyway
Yup. That was my take at the time. Buckner shouldn’t have been out there at all. The manager’s sins in the Series were manifold; having a fielder who can’t really move was only one of them.
He had to be escorted from the game, had to move to Florida, received death threats….he still won’t give an interview (can you blame him?).
I understand how 2003 makes people feel. I was 16. After we lost game 7 I literally just turned the TV off and literally just stared at the screen silently for about 20 minutes.
What Cubs fans did to that man is absolutely shameful. I had no part in it. Fuck. Alex. Gonzalez. (Fun fact–he had the highest SS fielding percentage in the NL that year.)
Yeah, the guy doing the documentary followed him around for a long time and finally cornered him in a parking garage. He got Bartman to talk a little bit, but the apprehension and fear of “what new hell is this going to bring upon me?” was very obvious. Poor guy.
I wish I could remember the name of it. I think someone here recommended it. Do you know what I’m talking about Evan?
It was called Catching Hell. Overall it was very good, but since it was made by a Sawx fan, of course he had to shoehorn Bill Buckner into the story for absolutely no reason.
Buckner gets unfairly blamed too. His error let in the winning run, but Calvin Schiraldi had come into the game with a lead and had already blown it.
Yep, that’s it. Thanks Chip’. I don’t think Buckner was really shoehorned in, Buckner was the catalyst for him making the movie. He grew up with that scapegoat, and now here was a new one.
I recommend that movie to any baseball fan, or really sports fan. Hell, I think there’s actually appeal there for anyone who likes a good tragedy.
Catching Hell is excellent. That poor guy.
Looks like it’s freely available: http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=13883887
(URL aside, it’s more than just a clip)
Escorted isn’t even quite the right word for it. They had to sneak him out of the ballpark to avoid the angry mob outside.
Gonzalez certainly bears plenty of blame, but the Farns poured kerosene on that fire when he came in, too. The game was merely tied at that point. How the hell do you give up a bases-clearing double to Mike Mordecai, he of the whopping .213 BA and 4 doubles in 65 regular season games?
To tie this to the Seinfeld thread, there is an amazing Curb ep that redeems Buckner. He gets reviled everywhere he goes and he ends up “making the catch” and saving a baby from falling out of a window.
Actually pretty touching, especially from a Yankees fan.
Because saying the umps made a bad call is a bridge too far? Since that’s what actually happened – if there’s no reach beyond the wall, it’s not interference per the rules.
Activists call for ‘Hitler balcony’ destruction in Vienna
Zombie Hitler just can’t catch a break.
Priests molested boys. Ergo destroy the Vatican.
Rome was a conquering empire ergo destroy the Colosseum.
Roman civil law is based on white privilege ergo patriarchy.
What I find amusing is they’re obsessed with only Hitler. No demands made upon Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Castro, etc. Heck, they even wear CCCP and Che t-shirts!
No demands made upon Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Castro, etc.
Case in point
Hated by me and two others, loved by the rest.
So they are in favor of creating these gaps?
+1 George Orwell
I say burn it all to the ground.
While they are at it, just destroy Germany since Hitler ruled it.

“Last Man to Walk on the Moon Mistaken About Climate Change on Earth
A former NASA astronaut who was the 12th person to walk on the moon may have seen Earth from space — but he doesn’t see that human actions are shaping global climate change.
Today (Oct. 15), Harrison Schmitt, a geologist who flew on the Apollo 17 mission in 1972 and who is the last living person to have visited the lunar surface, told a roomful of science journalists that he did not believe climate change is caused by human activity, despite overwhelming evidence and scientific consensus to the contrary.
Schmitt is known for denying scientifically proven aspects of climate change, Discover Magazine reported in 2011; in an article Schmitt co-wrote for the Wall Street Journal in 2013, he claimed that increasing levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) would actually benefit humanity. Schmitt recently doubled down on these views while at the Science Writers 2018 conference in Washington, D.C., during an appearance in a panel about the past, present and future of the U.S. space program.
At a Q&A after the panel “Apollo Plus 50,” New York Times reporter Nicholas St. Fleur asked Schmitt about his documented denials of human-influenced climate change. Schmitt countered by saying that he “saw no evidence” that global warming was taking place as a result of human activity, and that climate change wasn’t happening as quickly as reported, audience member and astrophysicist Adam Becker wrote in a thread on Twitter.
According to Becker, St. Fleur first read aloud from a 2009 article in the New York Times that quoted Schmitt bemoaning the stubborn denial of conspiracy theorists who claim astronauts never visited the moon. St. Fleur then asked if Schmitt saw the irony in denying climate science, after speaking out about people who claimed that the moon landing was a hoax.”

About the author;
Totally qualified to talk down to a Geologist who walked on the moon.
What kind of good/decent geologist would deny AGW is real, and the only cure – marxism – huh?
Heretic! Blasphemer!
“Schmitt is known for denying scientifically proven aspects of climate change, Discover Magazine reported in 2011; in an article Schmitt co-wrote for the Wall Street Journal in 2013, he claimed that increasing levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) would actually benefit humanity.”
This is hilarious. Because the actual literature in the economics of climate change show that a slight increase in temperature is a net benefit to humanity. But this guy is the one who denies “scientifically proven” stuff.
Common nitpick, but gosh damn I want to burn the public school system down for never explaining the fact that you can’t prove a premise through the scientific method.
Hard to believe she didn’t learn about Scientific Method at Columbia Film School.
But apparently learned Method acting very well.
Last living person to have visited the lunar surface? Buzz Aldrin will be surprised to hear that.
I think Mindy meant “only surviving member of the last crew to have visited the moon,” but order of modifiers is tough and I suspect that linear thinking isn’t Mindy’s strong suite.
of people alive, he was the last.
Wasnt Cernan with him and had weird beliefs?
Cernan was with him and has said he believes UFOs are products of other civilizations.
but he doesn’t see that human actions are shaping global climate change.
So you are saying that he doesn’t fucking love science?
Or marxism.
a geologist
In my (admittedly limited) experience, geologist seem to be the most skeptical about the climate change narrative. Probably because they’ve been trained to think on a longer time span, are familiar with the multitude of natural catastrophes that have befallen the earth in the past, and know that we are currently living in an abnormally cold period such that the temperature must necessarily rise in order to get back to “normal”.
Alert! Alert! Euphemism overload! Also high school girls volleyball.
WATCH: Sasquatch volleyball continues winning ways against Big Bend
That’s a hilarious headline. Wait, I mean, you know who else had a “big bend?”
STEVE SMITH SUPPORT GIRLS VOLLEYBALL, AND BY SUPPORT, MEAN….
Some Democrats are tired of Pelosi, and Republicans can’t stand her. Here’s why she’ll almost definitely be speaker again anyway.
I just assume she made a deal with the Devil. Or she is using the dark side. That has a very destructive effect on one’s body.
Facebook’s political ad system still allows anonymous advertising
Madness!
Activists are calling for a little-remembered balcony on the front of Vienna’s town hall to be destroyed because it is where Adolf Hitler gave a speech in 1938
If that balcony is destroyed, we’ll enter a new, better time line.
*I have been watching The Man in the High Castle

Some Activists think the country of Austria should be vaporized, because it is where Hitler was from.
That’s because it was settled by convicts.
I support Global warming destroying the earth because Hitler was an earthling.
Why is she confusing Snow White with Sleeping Beauty?
White girls. They’re all the same.
Nah, they both needed a kiss. Fairy Tales recycled plot points, too.
OT: so more spooky shit happening at the office. Yesterday, a picture went missing from a frame. The photo was from a former firm member’s wedding, and was a group candid shot of the firm members.
Then co-worker sets up a motion detector last night, not to record, but to ping back if her office door was opened. (All our office doors have a lock, but share the same key). And it went off at 3am today. So someone is messing around. . . and we have to change the locks. Outside of the building has a double security card entrance, so . . . . .
Co-worker thinks it is a former client who is messing with her, but the question is how does access happen? Does the dude wait around in the building, starting at 5:30pm (before the double security cards start happening)?
OT on the abbreviated links? Pah.
And it’s obviously aliens.
In mean none if us read the links, but not even reading that there are no links.
And it’s definitely aliens.
They do say our building is haunted . . . but yeah, probably aliens.
You seem to be discounting all the strong evidence that when aliens die they also become ghosts.
…when aliens die they also become ghosts
Exactly. It’s like EF has never heard the story of The Obi Wan Hauntings.
Scientifically proven, even.
My wife came home early one day and caught me “pleasing myself” as I poured over our wedding album. She went from angry to sad to angry again.
Euphemism?
“poured”? John-ism or intentional?
And of course she got mad. Do you know how embarrassing it is to try to explain why all the pages of the groomsmen are stuck together and none of her in her fancy dress are?
Hopefully you were looking at pictures of your wife…
So much this…
Cause spanking it to the bridesmaids is not a cool thing.. You would spank it to the briedesmaids, right? Not that there is anything wrong with doing it while looking at the dudes.
“poured over our wedding album. ”
Use a Kleenex, dude.
I hope you didn’t utter “why don’t you look like this anymore?”
3am? It’s clearly Rob Thomas.
Could it just be a Halloween prank? Of course, changing the locks is an expensive prank.
Since we keep harping on Seinfeld recently, maybe this is a real life copycat of the show where George had to photoshop himself out of the background of his boss’ picture (The Slicer)?
The most likely answer is that someone left a door open or unlatched and the intruder was thereby able to bypass the card system. Start with the smoking area (whether designated or not). Find out if people prop the door when they go out for smoke breaks. Also, do you have overnight janitors and do they leave door open?
Changing out ALL the cards would be a good step, but will cost money and people will bitch. But the people who bitch the loudest are the most productive pool for those who know something.
Window entry a possibility? Again, doesn’t have to be *your* windows as long as there is a no-card path from that window to your offices.
Wouldn’t the former client have to have an office key to gain access (provided people actually use the locks)?
You can also install an alarm system that passively monitors door openings and closings for all doors that
(cont’d)
…reports times of entry and exit.
Lastly, pranksters?
It’s more likely to be a trusted insider fucking with you.
Yes – I am thinking the basement entry door is propped by the smokers, and there are two restaurants in the building – so I am thinking there’s the source of access.
I would go to triple security cards.
A friend was singing the praises of his Blink cameras the other day; battery-powered, so you could slap a couple up with minimal effort.

When they figured out fashion obsessed young women are retarded social signalers.
Propaganda – it’s FANtastic!
From time to time I visit ‘TV by the numbers’. I checked out the ratings for ‘The Conners’.
They weren’t good. It was explained that ‘Roseanne’ was falling in viewership ‘anyway’. Probably true but if ‘Big Bang’ can keep up the numbers, why wouldn’t ‘Roseanne’? It wasn’t around long enough to know if it could foster a loyal base.
Then I read the comments. Wow. People really do let their true colors out. You’d like to think people will be objective about a medium they enjoy but not really.
I was reading stuff like ‘it’s better than Roseanne’ and ‘Roseanne dragged the show down’ and ‘she deserved to be fired’ and ‘The Conners is very good’ and ‘Metcalfe is better than Roseanne’ and ‘No more Trump propaganda (no one ever said boo about Will & Grace though – whenever someone suggested it was too political they’d laugh at the person). Finally, this one was weird ‘the characters were more real’ and ‘back to their roots’.
Not one person chimed in and said, ‘erm you assholes. ROSEANNE MADE THE SHOW.’
So all those previous comments are meaningless and worthless.
Seinfeld would have been so much better without Jerry.
Not to undermine the general point, but as a die hard fan of the show, I contend he was probably the least essential character tbh.
Would anyone else on the show even know each other without him?
Not the core characters, no. Kramer and Newman were buddies, but I don’t think you can count Newman as a core character.
By the end, Newman was close to core. He was only in a handful of episodes in the first few seasons, but in the later ones he was pretty regular.
I always liked how, in the backwards episode, Jerry unwittingly tells Kramer “Hey, just come on over anytime” when he first moves into the apartment and Kramer said he didn’t want to be a bother.
I don’t know…he was sorta the glue that bound it all together. The normal one that had these crazy characters orbiting around him.
I can agree with “least essential”, but you can’t have the show without him. He was the straight man to the other three.
Yep. If people think that role is so easy, they should try UnCiv’s shtick for a while.
Hah hah hah!
Exactly this. He’s the straight man. He has his funny moments but he’s there to make sure that characters meet each other. And it’s fitting because, as the show famously made fun of, he can’t act.
I adore that show so much. Good Simpsons, Seinfeld/Curb and Trailer Park Boys are my favorite comedies.
Also: Costanza never handles the situation correctly, but he is always right.
George literally ate out of the garbage.
The doily was still on, and there was only one little bite out of it.
He also pees in a public shower.
IT WAS ON TOP! ON A GLOSSY MAGAZINE! WITH ONLY ONE BITE TAKEN!
I will absolutely
dieclaim glorious victory on this hill. This is why I love the show so much. I am literally Larry David. I’m the only one in the room rooting for him because he sees the world EXACTLY as I see it.It’s food. Fresh. It’s not covered in ants or fungus or anything. It’s just sitting in a place and it’s perfectly fine to eat.
The trick is that I don’t get caught.
“Was that wrong? Should I not have done that?”
I still laugh at that.
100% correct, that’s pretty much what I was getting at.
I disagree, he was key to the interactions with the various characters that made the show great.
“A Beautiful Mind” would’ve been interesting without Russel Crowe’s character.
It’s like if they did the Cosby show without Bill Cosby…. Err.
What is the best way they would write Bill out of a remake of the Cosby show?
Also it’s funny, but isn’t the point of theater that the actor is portraying someone they are not. In that way you can like the character (e.g. Jason Bourne) but detest the actor (Matt Damon).
It would be funny if they rebooted Cosby and wrote him as being in jail for molesting all his gynecologist patients.
Richard Chamberlain Jason Bourne would beat Matt Damon Jason Bourne senseless and not even have a clue as to how or why he did it.
Roseanne is a tough watch. How does anyone get past listening to her voice?
And I keep hearing that Roseanne just wasn’t very conservative. It’s pretty much progressive-lite, with her backward views being challenged and by the end of the episode, corrected. Which, if true, makes it pretty clear that anyone rooting for or against it wasn’t watching it.
I thought it was pretty even-handed. IMHO the whole point was to be not all-prog like every other show & to show a “typical” American family where not everyone thinks alike.
Rosanne herself relates to Blue-Collar people. Socially somewhat conservative (when compared to pussy-hat wearing commies). Fiscally moderate – wanting to hang-on to manufacturing type jobs and not get outsourced to the Third World.
Pretty much where Trump won and Hillary lost.
‘No more Trump propaganda
Because everything needs to be leftwing propaganda all the time.
Tesla inks deal for Gigafactory 3 in China
I’m sure it will be powered by windmills and hydro power. And the batteries will be built from recycled materials. It will totally not be powered by coal plants, and the batteries will totally not be built using strip mined chemicals, because that would be Not Green.
Just in time for a major economic crash in China.

“best qualified person to run for President in my life”
That line never fails to make me hyperventilate with laughter.
Her husband was way more qualified.

Even Lyndon Larouche was more qualified.

Anyway, I bet she is fun at parties.
The government does not have the authority to force any person to purchase health insurance nor does it have the authority to operate a socialized healthcare system
It has the power to do so though, and that’s ultimately all that really matters.

British woman ‘catapulted’ from bed during sex and paralyzed
Am I bad I clicked for a pic?
But seriously, that’s horrible.
What is horrible?
1) The injury she suffered
2) That the article didn’t have a pic of her?
3) The case of blue balls her partner suffered?
*3 is obviously a false answer because of course he finished his business with her. After all it wasn’t like she could storm off.
Let’s go with….yes?
Her paralysis. Brutal.
Ouch.
Let me remind all of you pea brained sucking chest wounds on America – that this was before you decided that a sexually predatory treasonous fraud was a better option than the best qualified person to run for President in my life.

The divorce records for Brother Keith were released to the public yesterday. Turns out Brother Keith is a victim of spousal abuse!
There really wasn’t much in there. The biggest takeaway was that after their divorce his wife lost her job and instead of getting new job, decided to squeeze Keith for more money. That is when things got interesting. He accused her of the abuse then.
My favorite thing about this is that every story I have read about it, says the records were unsealed as a result of a law suit by the Star Tribune (local paper) and Alpha News -“A right wing news web site”. Every story mentions that Alpha News are a bunch of right wingers. They never mention that the Strib is so far left that they think Lenin, Stalin and Mao were a bit too liberal.
although I am physically larger, quicker, and stronger than she is.
“I can totally do more pushups than that bitch.”
I’m just glad I’ll never go into politics. As much as I detest Ellison, third parties getting sealed documents surrounding a private relationship unsealed and released are scum.
I will not stand here and let you badmouth Barack Obama.
IANAL and I wonder how hard it is to seal divorce records in the first place. I know that Ellison’s opponent has said that his own divorce records are in the public record so why shouldn’t Ellison’s.
If everyone’s records were sealed, then I think Ellison has a good point that his private life should stay private. If, on the other hand, it takes special connections/efforts to get divorce records sealed, then I say too bad Ellison.
Weird/funny story from the bartender at our local watering hole: One of the kitchen crew noticed a sealed cardboard box sitting in the dumpster. Curious as to what it was, he opened it and found several very large dildos of different colors. Bartender even showed us a picture.
So apparently someone decided to ditch their sex toy collection by sealing ’em up in a box and throwing them away in someone else’s trash.
So apparently someone decided to ditch their sex toy collection by sealing ’em up in a box and throwing them away in someone else’s trash.
When did you become so cynical? That was clearly a gift from the dildo faerie.
What is the point of differently colored dildos?
Like, I get skin colors, but why pink or purple or green? Alien fetish? NTTAWWT.
That’s like asking why you need one of all the beanie babies.
I’ve heard from certain wimmins that they like the fruity colored varieties specifically because they are less realistic and that the flesh-colored varieties have like an uncanny valley quality for them. Girls are weird.
So you don’t get them mixed up, like different plates for meat and dairy in a Jewish household.
G/d bless you sir. You are a literary treasure.

So who got to keep the Dildo’s?
Idahoans shocked to discover that the commissioner of Fish and Game is a hunter
Christ, even Idaho is doing this shit? We’re doomed, aren’t we?
Without managed hunting and the money it provides those things he killed wouldn’t have been alive to be killed because they’d be extinct, at least in that area.
I was raised to frown upon trophy hunting, and I still find it distasteful at best and immoral at worst. That said, proceeds from trophy hunting help fund conservation efforts, and I don’t see a problem with a public official doing it according to the laws of the area in which he or she’s hunting. I guess this is one of those things that fall under the category of things I have a personal issue with that aren’t illegal.
I feel more or less the same way. It breaks my heart to see dead leopards, they’re probably my favorite animals. But I wouldn’t stop anyone else from doing it, even if trophy hunting had no secondary benefits, which it does. And it seems absolutely crazy to fire a public official who is literally in charge of hunting for participating in a completely legal trophy hunt on another continent.
I’d be surprised if a commissioner of fish and game was not an outdoorsy hunter or fisher type.
The average publik skool student thinks the commissioner of fish and game is there to ensure that fish and game never get killed.
From your betters at Teen Vogue:
In a capitalist country, the focus is on profits over anything else; in a socialist country, the public is seen to be more important, and social welfare is a major priority.
When I think ,of a place where social welfare is a priority, East Germany and the USSR are right at the top of the list.
Teen Vogue donates all of its profits to charity, I assume?
Teen Vogue makes profits?
Fuck if I know. Before the recent spate of leftist nonsense of theirs being shared here, I didn’t know there even was a Teen Vogue in the first place.
Teen Vogue makes a profit?
When I think of social welfare in a socialist country, I just imagine the people suffering from worm and viral infections in North Korea and the soldiers who have to loot the rotten farms there.
That’s the fault of evil capitalists ruining their socialist paradise. Just like Venezuela.

OK I want some glib advice.
Job people love me. Assuming they can hire me when I’m available…I have some problems. They only pay about 1000 euros a month. Now the ex did indeed say that that was like 2-3 hours of work a day. But they’re trying to push the workload up, so they told me in the interview. No idea what that will entail or how factual it is. That is enough money to pretty much break even in Thailand. I have a bit of a bankroll so I’m not going to have to slum.
I can also try my hand at freelancing, but that’s less stable and I’ve never done it before. The company has a 3 month intro contract. If I do that and break even, I will at least have some employment history in this field (all I have now on my CV is teaching). So I can go 3 months and bail while also looking for other contacts, or I can dive balls deep into freelancing without any guarantees but with assuredly higher pay as long as I can consistently find it. Or I can decide to stay on. It’s also possible to supplement income by teaching online.
This is new territory for me. I’m going to talk to older brother, the successful child, tomorrow about what he thinks. Any experiences or insights would be greatly appreciated.
Would the increased work load for the new job be tied to an increase in pay? Can you negotiate the salary higher, or have it tied to productivity?
The gig is 40 hours/week salary. Ex has worked there for I think 6 months and she said that she worked 2-3 a day. I’m to be her direct replacement. If that’s the case then hell, yes. That’s a fantastic safety net.
But working 40 hours a week and getting such shit pay is only worth it for the resume/experience as far as I’m concerned. I’d get out after 3 months if that turned out to be the case.
Well then, if the pay is acceptable, and is enough of a safety net for you, sounds like a good play. Verify in the contract if you can accept other clients, and do their work outside your official working hours at the main job. I’d also keep an eye out for penalties for breaking the contract (on both sides) just in case.
Is there really a possibility that your work hours can increase so much? If your ex is claiming two to three hours a day as the norm, how much can the workload realistically go up?
In the interview they mentioned that they were pushing more into the English market (they do most of their work in Scandinavian/Norwegian languages).
I thought that that was a bit of a bullshit, bearish attempt to convince me that there would be more work. I actually do not WANT more work so I hope that they fail…
As of now I have no idea of what they are able to muster up. That uncertainty is affecting my ability to make a decision. I just….can’t work 40 hours a week on that pay. That’s 6.25 euros an hour. Even in Thailand that’s unacceptable. I want to have a nice-ish lifestyle but more importantly I want to be able to save money. I can’t do it on that if I have to be committed to that gig.
Leaning towards going for it for the experience and breaking even. Make a choice later.
My mom finally agreed with my philosophy of Not Making Decisions not too long ago. I always figured that as you stand you have an infinite number of directions to go. If you wait, life will play itself out and whittle it down to two or three. Then you make the best call that you can. Planning for things months/years away with the imperfect knowledge of life is only going to distract, confuse and neuroticize things.
I shall see what occurs with my second interview next Thursday.
Planning for things months/years away with the imperfect knowledge of life is only going to distract, confuse and neuroticize things.
Only for those who do not realize that “plans are useless, but planning is indispensable”.
The planning is there. I think of it like playing baseball. I’m ready for the curve but have to sit fastball.
I’m not in a count where I can sit on one pitch. I need to be flexible enough to adjust to whatever’s thrown at me.
My recommendation is to give it a try, but have a fallback plan in place if the job doesn’t turn out to be as advertised. If you end up having all the free time that the ex promised, you need to have a plan for using that time productively. If you end up having to work the full 40 hours a week at the shitty pay rate, you need to be prepared to do that until the fallback plan can be put into place. You’ve also got to put a price on the experience that you are getting in the field. If that experience is going to open doors for you in the future to more lucrative opportunities it might be worth it to suck it up in order to beef up your CV.
That is *exactly* where I’m at right now.
If your ex is claiming two to three hours a day as the norm,
can you trust what she says?
Why would the ex leave a sweet gig like that?
@RC Dean: Yes. We patched up our differences and are friends.
@Invis Finger: She’s a very ambitious gal. It’s why we broke up. She’s writing for Samsung now in Singapore making $6k a month. That’s $2k more than she used to make when we lived there together.
For we expat teachers that’s a goddamn fortune. I feel very poor when I talk to folk on this site.
Agreed. You are doing piece work. No reason that your pay shouldn’t be tied to your productivity. Eat what you kill.
Plan C? Can you go back to your current teaching arrangement at same or similar employer (besides the possible to supplement income part)? Not that it should stop you, just so you know where you stand. And can you freelance while on contract?
I’m very conservative, likely way too conservative, with my own employment, but I’d figure my cutoff point where I would need to do something else, back from that when I’d need to start looking for that something else, and back from that an evaluation date to be brutally honest with myself if I can make it work or not. It sounds like you’re set to that point now.
I can always get a job teaching in Korea or elsewhere, yes. This is just my foray into what I actually want to be doing.
I’m going to be almost debt free (maybe $2k left) and I’ll have $17-$20k sitting in my bank account. No other obligations or dependents.
I can likely freelance on contract as long as I keep it on the sly. Ex just moved back to Singapore this week and is very busy with the move and her new job. I’ll be able to talk to her later but it’s harder to get information out of her right now–I certainly don’t want to be bothering her right now. She’s writing for Samsung and making $6k a month, $1500 more than we made when we lived together in SG.
I’m pretty much paralleling her career trajectory, just two years behind.
Good luck to you sir!
If you’re wanting to add some new skills to your resume, I knew a guy who did various different translation and editing work through a couple different telework companies. Appen was one, and I think Lion Bridge? Something like that. Might be worth googling.
Glad to hear it worked out. I was worried that you’d gone silent.
Teen Vogue donates all of its profits to charity, I assume?
Teen Vogue, profitable? Good one. They don’t even bother to send it to the printer, anymore.
They just need more articles on adolescent anal sex and it’ll fly off the shelves.
They only pay about 1000 euros a month.
They pay in Euros? That’s probably a good thing. Is the exchange rate stable?

Trump’s unprecedented war on leakers
President Donald Trump’s hunt for leakers in his administration snared a senior Treasury Department employee who was charged with giving a journalist bank records about suspicious transactions involving Paul Manafort, Rick Gates, and accused Russian agent Maria Butina.
The prosecution of Natalie Mayflower Sours Edwards is intended to send a signal that Treasury will punish violations of a law designed to protect sensitive client information that banks flag to the department, said a senior department official who asked not to be identified.
She’s a patriotic whistleblower who just wants us to see the depth and breadth of corruption in Trump’s America. Give her a medal.
“Unprecedented”
she handed over an individual’s private banking information to journalists? fuck her.

Trump prosecutes law breakers?

Unprecedented? This is another one of those things that even if true it would have tons of precedent. This author needs to learn a new word: Unprincipled
Here’s Nancy Pelosi’s to-do list if Democrats win back the House
In addition, Pelosi said she would like Democrats to make sure there is integrity in the U.S. voting system.
In addition, the fox said that he would like foxes to make sure there in integrity in chicken coop security.
RCP has Dems +7 in the House but the GOP +3 in the Senate. should be a fun couple of years of nothing accomplished.
I read somewhere, though, that the close House races are a statistical dead heat, though. The Dem overall edge stems from them winning their overwhelmingly proggie districts by huge margins.
This is exactly why I want the Democrats to take the House. Nothing will happen for two years. As libertarians, that’s the best we can hope for.
After the Pachyderms failed to repeal Obamacare, they deserve to lose IMO.
I finally learned about one Dem district that should flip GOP: 8th in Minnesoda where the incumbent Dem is retiring and his popularity in 2016 managed to survive a Trump majority in the district. Supposedly, there are several other pro-Trump districts that may toss out their Dem congressmen in Nevada and New Hampshire. But there are still plenty of GOP seats where Clinton won in 2016 where it is doubtful the voters are more in favor of Trump now than they were in 2016.
I live in the 8th district. I don’t care for either candidate. I would be VERY surprised if the GOP won. This is union proud, proggy country. FML
Where’s my shocked face at? Gun grabbers trying to move that one way ratchet. Fuck you RINOs for not repealing background checks when you controlled all three branches. Or Obamacare.
Why do I have the feeling this isn’t by going with legalization and moving more things (like Birth Control) to over the counter?
What, are they already backing off promises to impeach?
“undocumented immigrants”
Fuck this term, and fuck the AP/UPI/whatever-the-fuck-ever for adopting this term in their style guides.
If I steal shit from the 7-11, I’m not an undocumented shopper.
I’ll be voting a straight red ticket given Democrats are currently insane. Sorry in advance Libertarian candidates that are running. (they probably are not very libertarian anyway.)

It’s ironic that the image they use to illustrate water is of Hoover Dam. You know, a hydroelectric dam. The kind of thing that if we created more of them, would reduce our CO2 output. But, we can’t have those because fish are more important than saving the world.
The thing is, like with a lot of “green” policy, the technology to deal with dams interrupting fish passage exists and has been implemented successfully. But, that would solve a problem without imposing unnecessary scarcity or constraints on quality of life, so, you know, fuck that.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/17/world/europe/turkey-saudi-khashoggi-dismember.html?action=click&module=Top%20Stories&pgtype=Homepage
Saudi agents were waiting when Jamal Khashoggi walked into their country’s consulate in Istanbul two weeks ago. Mr. Khashoggi was dead within minutes, beheaded, dismembered, his fingers severed, and within two hours the killers were gone, according to details from audio recordings described by a senior Turkish official on Wednesday.
Turks claiming there’s audio evidence. i’m guessing they bugged the consulate.
But Turkish officials on Wednesday reiterated their conclusion that a team of 15 Saudi agents, some with ties to Crown Prince Mohammed, was waiting for Mr. Khashoggi inside the Saudi Consulate the moment he arrived, at about 1:15 p.m. on Oct. 2.
After he was shown into the office of the Saudi consul, Mohammad al-Otaibi, the agents seized Mr. Khashoggi almost immediately and began to beat and torture him, eventually cutting off his fingers, the senior Turkish official said, describing the audio recordings.
this is one of those situations where i’ll accept the use of anonymous sources.
We need to cut the Saudis loose, they’re fucking scum. Let them stand on their own two feet in Yemen too.
I’m open to the idea I read yesterday that things aren’t as cut’n’dry over there as we might think. I mean, I agree with your conclusion but… I would expand it to include, well, the entire region. Including Turkey.
Agreed…
Meanwhile, the Saudis dropped $100 mil on us to “help with Syrian stability efforts”. We need to be as far away from the Saudis as we can.
I’m getting a little tired of the Khashoggi story, on a couple of fronts.
(1) The references to him as a “journalist”. Maybe a recent and part-time journalist, but that elides his involvement in Saudi politics from way back.
(2) The breathless retailing of lurid details about a torture, murder, dismemberment, smuggling the body out in boxes, etc., without a moments pause to consider where those details come from, how unlikely it is that anybody not on the alleged assassination team would know them, and what agenda whoever is peddling them might have.
The Turks do need to cough up the tapes they supposedely have.
I seriously doubt the Turks have tapes of anything going on inside the Saudi embassy. At most, I think they can show a group of people, supposedly an improbably large assassination team, going into and out of the embassy, and maybe getting on and off a plane. The lurid details all relate to things that supposedly happened inside the embassy, and would realistically be known only to the assassination team and maybe a handful of other highly trusted individuals. Maybe that trust is misplaced, or maybe one of the killers is blabbing to the press (which I doubt it very much). Balance that against the regimes who would love to see the US and Saudis have a falling out, and I see little reason to believe anything we have been told, other than Khashoggi went into the embassy and hasn’t been seen since.
The details may be the product of imagination, but it seems pretty clear that he was set up and killed. He was instructed to return on a set date; he went in; he never came out (at least under his own power). The new Saudi leader is a reformer, but that doesn’t necessarily make him a good guy. Khashoggi was Muslim Brotherhood but that does not make setting him up and disappearing him a good thing.
The details may be the product of imagination, but it seems pretty clear that he was set up and killed.
We are hearing that he was killed from the same sources with the lurid details. Why I should I believe them?
Assume he was killed. Why should I also assume that that it was bin Salman who had him killed, and not one of the multitudinous other factions in the Saudi royal family? The succession has hardly been uncontested; maybe one of his rivals did this to undermine him?

I suppose he could still be inside, and in a condition that makes producing him worse than allowing the furor to continue. I have no idea if bin Salman personally ordered this, or if it is someone else in the Saudi government, nor do I particularly care. The Saudis royals have been a force for evil in the region since the founding of the Kingdom. They are our ‘ally’ in much the same sense that Stalin was; we choose their brand of evil as less immediately dangerous than Iran’s. I think we have made a devil’s bargain with that choice.
Consider, if it wasn’t bin Salman but another royal: If you buy the story being frantically peddled by . . . someone for . . . some reason, that it was bin Salman, then you are basically going along with one side of the evil Saudi royal family, likely one of the eviller sides since bin Salman is probably as good as its going to get, for this generation anyway. The alternative, of course, is that the Iranians are behind the current tale, and you would be going along with the mullahs, likely the one group in the Mideast that you can argue is worse than the Saudis.
Ask yourself: will breaking one off in bin Salman over this story make things better or worse? Cui bono? Since we are entangled, I think we need to disentangle ourselves, but at a time and for reasons of our choosing, not, as seems likely, those of bin Salman’s regional and internal rivals.
I think you are creating a conspiracy theory in your mind because you are hopeful about bin Salman. I would really like to share your hope, but I think there is a lot of evidence that his reforms are less about westernization and more about eliminating dissent and strengthening Saudi Arabia. He seems to sincerely want to end the international playboy lifestyle his kin have enjoyed, which is a good thing, but I see that more in terms of Hitlerian or Stalinist puritanism. In other words he’s telling the family to stop raping models in luxury hotels, not because he gives a damn about decency, but because it’s hard to be a world power when your leaders are having drug fueled orgies.
Again don’t get me wrong, everyone around this is a bad guy. Khashoggi was scum, Turkey is ruled by scum, the Mullahs are scum, Assad is scum.
Somebody is peddling a story for some reason. We are asked to believe details that it is highly unlikely would be known outside of a very small circle with very strong incentives not to leak. I’m asking where the information comes from, and why? Who would want us to believe this, and why? Until we get actual verifiable information, these strike me as the very first questions you should ask.
Admittedly, I’m speculating about likely suspects and motives, but I don’t think that’s a conspiracy theory, myself.
The story being peddled by Glenn Beck on the radio last night (Hey! It was 8 pm and there was nothing else on the radio when I was driving around!) was that Khasshoggi turned his Apple watch to record when he was going into the consulate and streamed the audio to the cloud, which his girlfriend downloaded. Thus the tapes.
How stupid are they to kill him in their own consulate?
Because I hate myself and you should all suffer too, more fun with Teen Vogue.

Always my favorite little piece of cognitive dissonance.
It’s like a Wikipedia summary for people too stupid to read Wikipedia summaries.
It’s totes obvious that trading is not acceptable behavior in anarchy.
I’m going to need an English language ruling from the booth.
That whole paragraph reads like it’s been run back and forth thru Google Translate a few times. Or maybe that’s just the way True Believers™ communicate.
activity of militant self-defense
I guess militant self-defense means you get to throw the first punch?
While I’m sure it would be used as fodder by the Dems, I’m actually looking forward to the inevitability of one of these Antifas getting shot and killed after instigating a conflict and the shooter not being prosecuted/acquitted. Maybe then they’ll stop LARPing.
“self-defense”
I don’t think they quite understand what this means…
anarchism’s inherent opposition to capitalism.
This person definitely does not know what words mean.
Teen Vogue…. I would sort of assume that their target audience would be more into reading about fashion, boys, maybe girls’ high school sports, etc., and not thickly worded, graduate-level postmodern foolishness.

Facebook ‘war room’ scrambles to combat fake election news
“an operation the social media giant launched in September to stamp out fake news, disinformation and fake accounts in real time.”
If they were serious about this, they would have to close down the site and go home. Almost everything on facebook is bullshit.
You have to admit, it’s pretty funny watching them stumble around with their heads shoved so far up their ass.
LOL sure, OK.
“Remain calm, everyone! I’m a data scientist and I’m on the job!”
Also, the “director of elections and civic engagement work” sounds like they’re off-shoring a lot of the work.
Meanwhile I see morons sharing fake free money or airline ticket scams daily that clearly have been untouched by Facebook. Unlike Fake News those scams actually cause harm.
“Facebook ‘war room’ scrambles to censor news that deviates from Leftist orthodoxy”

Beto O’Rourke’s campaign has transcended politics to become something of a political-cultural phenomenon.
Normally we call that losing.
An Irish guy with a fake Latino name trying to out-Hispanic the son of an actual Cuban refugee. It has transcended something.
I don’t give a fuck. His last name is a dead giveaway. And I don’t give a fuck about bullshit identity politics. Latinos don’t have a patent on the nickname Beto and Cruz doesn’t have some Divine right to represent brown people.
Besides, that’s Jeb!’s gig.
I’m really, really hoping that the Lizzy DNA debacle is identity politics jumping the shark. Most normal people I know (read: non-rabid Leftists) don’t buy that shit and are sick of it.
it has transcended the Earthly bounds of hypocrisy.
fleeing the scene of a hit and run, then using your father’s influence to get out of trouble is the very definition of the elitism and patriarchy the Progressives rail against. but when it’s one of your own party members, it’s “cool”.
okay, got it.

Anybody that tries to inject politics into my one most beloved thing can go fuck a duck. And fuck Thrasher for running this garbage.
Why does Thrasher Magazine have a senior political correspondent?
Every time I see something like this, I remember that D.C. is Hollywood for ugly people. If O’Rourke were judged by normal standards, he’s a scrawny, dorky fuck. I’m guessing being in a band was his key to (trying to) get laid, and when that failed he went into politics for the same reason.
Skimming through Hammercorps’ water link, I am again reminded of something I have been thinking a lot about, recently.
Under “Socialism” innovation is nearly nonexistent. I don’t worry much about an impending global warming driven drought, because I believe we can adapt, via innovative technology and improved agricultural processes. No central planner will ever be able to respond to change as ably as a distributed network of self-interested individuals. And, of course, those individuals must be allowed unfettered access to information and the experiments being carried out by others.
Which is the central premise of “Anthem” by Ayn Rand.
“Under “Socialism” innovation is nearly nonexistent”
Well, except for that jet which could be flown by brain waves that the Soviets designed…
Firefox was a documentary.
It did try to defect.
No central planner will ever be able to respond to change as ably as a distributed network of self-interested individuals.
Up until 7 or 8 years ago it was easy to make that point relatable to people by using the worldwide web as an example of a distributed network of self-interested individuals creating order out of chaos. Now that it’s been completely centralized and concentrated under a smaller number of companies than the old print and broadcast media to the cheers and applause of the users it’s no longer a practical example. And probably a metaphor for something larger.
How we use the worldwide web is still a distributed network of self-interested individuals mostly doing whatever we want with it. Whether what we do with it is stupid and self-destructive or productive is up to us, and still a good metaphor for liberty.
I would say Antifa is a pan-radical-left politic, or activity of militant self-defense against the far right.
Pre-emptive self defense. “We don’t like what those guys think , let’s kick their ass!”
It’s disturbing how many Lefties actually use that as justification. They’ve bought into the “words are violence” hook, line and sinker.
People are going to start dying.
“Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.”
*shrug*
that jet which could be flown by brain waves that the Soviets designed…
Were the brain waves the means of propulsion? Because that would be pretty cool.
O’Rourke, a former punk rocker with a message like Obama’s and a face like a Kennedy’s, has seen his star rise so steeply that, for now, he seems to have reached escape velocity from mere politics. For a moment, at least, he’s become cultural phenomenon on the lips and in the hearts of Democrats around the country in a way few outside of Obama and Bernie Sanders have achieved before him.
Fucking personality cultists. Between this dipshit and Gulag Barbie, the media coverage is a step down intellectually from Teen Beat. I can’t wait for the article about his vegan breakfast and hot yoga routine.

Mr. BurnsMr. O’Rourke, Your Campaign Seems To Have the Momentum of a Runaway Freight Train. Why Are You So Popular?”I look forward to the hagiography after Cruz rips off his electoral head and shits down his electoral neck.
I’ve been reading up on the short lived Bavarian Soviet Republic. It’s a hidden gem in history. For 6 days the republic was led by Ernst Toller. So much of what he did reminds me of modern day socialists. His police president was a former burglar. His transportation minister was a railroad tracks worker. Best of all his foreign minister Franz Lipp was literally insane. He declared war on Württemberg and Switzerland because they refused to allow him to borrow 60 locomotives. In a telegram to the Pope and Lenin proclaiming victory over the previous Bavarain socialist leader Johannes Hoffman, Lipp went off on a tangent complaining that Hoffman stole the key to the ministry bathroom when he fled.
” Dear Colleague ! I have just declared war on Wurtemberg and Switzerland , for these dogs had refused to lend me sixty locomotives. I am sure we will win. Moreover, in view of our victory, I will ask the Pope’s blessing – I am on good terms with him. ”
“Proletariat of Upper Bavaria united in joy. Social democrats, independent socialists and communists gathered like a hammer, Peasants League with them. Liberal bourgeoisie, valet of Prussia, completely disarmed. Hoffmann (de) fleeing to Bamberg, where he took away the bathroom key of my ministry. Prussian politics, of which Hoffmann is the lackey, is trying to cut us off from the Berlin-Leipzig-Nuremberg area, Frankfurt and Essen coal. At the same time, they try to discredit us with the Entente as bloodthirsty dogs and looters. Meanwhile, Noske’s hairy gorilla hands are dripping with blood. Fuck that. Can he add and subtract?
?
here’s a video of him skating around a busy parking lot.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwizfmPNrH8
a few thoughts from a former skater who is now old and haggard and tired of bullshit:
1. he looks like maybe he dabbled in longboarding as an adult the way he’s “surfing” that shorter deck
2. fuck anybody who thinks he’s an authentic skater and this is anything more than a contrived shoot
Yeah, that’s somebody who might have had a longboard, but not somebody who ever skated street more than twice. Not at his age. You don’t do that weird crouch thing just to turn. Plus, if he really had skated, and I say this as someone with bad knees who hasn’t skated in twenty years, he’d be trying to see if he can still ollie.
yep. first thing i tried to do when i stepped on the neighbor’s kid’s board was a kickflip. i didn’t land it. but that was the first thing i tried to do. second through eightieth attempts were ollies.
I could never quite land a kickflip. I could ollie pretty well, and I could do rail slides. My best tricks were ollies to nose stall reverts and tail slides. I was never able to get the hang of ramps, though.
Ugh, man, I can’t shake the anger from seeing that shit. It just looks so obviously fake it’s obscene. He looks like a middle-aged career politician going to the “rock n’ roll concert” and dancing with the kids to show how hip he is. “Look, young people, I’m just like one of you! I listen to The Weekends and I ride skateboards at the local fast-food hangout! Vote for me!”
I come from the generation of tiny little boards – and didn’t get a longer wooden board with a kick until the 80s. And even in my late 40s I can still skate a bit better than he can – the few times a year I grab my son’s board. A lot of the tricks of skateboarding started just about the time I stopped boarding, so I never learned to ollie, for example.
Alright, now I have a mental image of the movie character skateboarding. Which is weird.
I started around 9 with a Valterra back when you got those at Kiddie City or Toys R’ Us, then around 11 I started buying separate decks and trucks and so forth from skate shops, and that was when you started seeing noses and tails with the same angle. I could ollie on the flat nose deck, but I couldn’t break two feet until I got a deck with a curved nose. Being able to ollie was pretty much the price of entry to call yourself a skater when I was a kid, and really you weren’t shit until you could do something else, like rail slides or nollies, stuff like that.
the prices haven’t changed much from those days of mail ordering from the skate shop. that was my first intro to COD. i think my first board was pushing $100 but that included all the plastic nose/tail/rail guards. you can still get a board for $100.
my first was a Lance Mountain, followed by a couple Luceros. also skated a Rodney Mullins freestyle board which became the modern eras standard size. we had a good sized group of kids that skated. we would build little 60 degree “quarter pipe” ramps and rail slides in the burbs using tools borrowed from an old guy we dubbed our “skate dad”. we also had the awesome benefit of an enormous drainage ditch running through our neighborhood that dried out in the summer. it’s about 15′ wide, 4′ tall on either side. the transition’s rough but skateable. cops would chase us out of it if we stuck around for too long.
this O’Rourke guy trying to pass himself off as a skater makes me legitimately angry.
I was lucky in that a skate shop opened up downtown when I was starting to get really serious, and there was an abandoned high school that had a tennis court where we all used to skate. Kids would build quarter pipes, bring parking curbs, benches, stuff like that. It was off the beaten path enough that police wouldn’t generally give us shit, and there were enough guys there that no bums or crackheads or anybody would hassle us. They mostly hung out in the abandoned buildings, anyway.
They’ve since restored the place, and the high school is a community center or something. I believe the city actually funded a skate park where the tennis court was, but I haven’t been down there to see it. It’s a far cry from when I was a kid and we’d have one guy post up to watch for cops while we skated downtown amidst the tourists.
my aunts and uncles skated those tiny plastic toothpicks with the roller skate wheels.
Guys, guys, guys!
Slate is on to us!
It is a kind of formalism which resuscitates the moribund idea that judges do not make law in part through value judgments, but instead find law through neutral principles.
Pretty much says it all.
Holy christ, they’re putting that forward as a criticism?
Yes.
It would be more honest on their part to advocate for getting rid of the courts altogether.
Sorry, the warning that this was Slate was right there. This story came courtesy of my viewpoint-neutral Google News feed. More derp:
Emphasis mine. Since they think they’re being neutral, we can totally get them to vote with us sometimes, if we make good with the arguments.
wow.
“find law through neutral principles” is a dead idea? just wow.
“Moribund”. God I hope that’s sarcasm.
Consider the source. To lefties, finding law through neutral principles has been laughably obsolete for a generation or more. They were teaching “critical legal theory” rejecting the idea of neutral principles when I was in law school in the ’80s.
find law through neutral principles.
IOW, not law.
Meant to say that they do not believe in law.
They could embrace Federalism and demonstrate how much better their policies are in places like Illinois, California, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Then other states would follow and the Supreme Court would be irrelevant.
They can’t because they mean to rule you.
In other words, Scalia and Thomas were inconsistent in application, therefore the entire theory should be thrown out as illegitimate and replaced with a system where words have no meaning other than what we find useful at the moment.
Bankrupt Judicial Philosophy
Band name.
And this is already their M.O.
Question for cable-cutter types: what’s the solution for watching live NHL? The NHL’s streaming service blocks any game I could see on cable (and broadcast, too, I think), and since the regional Fox Sports net carries every one of the local team’s games, that means no local games for me. Fox will stream the games, if I subscribe to a cable/satellite service that carries the Fox programming.
I can see two possible options: 1) Buy the NHL’s streaming service, and connect to it via a VPN, so they think I’m not local (assuming they judge locality by geo-IP). 2) Buy the cable service, at which point streaming doesn’t matter, since I really want to watch it on my TV anyway.
Any better options?
I think Fubo carries the regional sports networks (like MSG in my area, which shows all the local hockey teams). They probably also carry NBC Sports but I don’t think NHL Network.
Looks like they’ve got Fox Sports and FS regional, but $50/mo…. yikes.
Well, yeah, you get a whole bunch of other stuff along with it that may or may not interest you. If I cut the cord, it’s probably the direction I’ll take.
That’s about the size of it.
It’s unfortunate in that I thought everything moving to streaming/cord cutting would actually be liberating, however there’s now this proliferation of different services all showing their own shit all of which you have to pay for. Like game 3 of Rockies-Brewers, which I wanted to watch but was ONLY available on MLB network. Sure, it said I could validate using PS Vue (which I use), but it still wanted me to pay. Fuck that.
Spoiler: The Rockies got swept, scoring two runs in three games.
Not sure about NHL, but between Sunday Ticket and Hulu I can watch pretty much everything. Hulu Live carries the local teams, and Sunday Ticket gets me everything else. It sounds like the NHL streaming service does pretty much the same.
NHL website is very clear, “out-of-market” games only. Give ’em your zip code, and they’ll very helpfully tell you which teams you won’t get to watch. They also blackout “nationally broadcast” games, so Stanley Cup games are out.
Obviously I would never do any such a thing because I would never deprive the NHL of its well-deserved revenue by violating domestic and international copyright laws, but I hear that some people just wait until the next day and torrent or stream bootlegs of the games.
Sling for $25/month through Roku includes NBC which broadcasts my local market team.
Yeah, sling blue has most of the fox and nbc rsn’s.
unblock-us.com works well with NHL streaming.

But it’s different when we do it.

Or, you could take responsibility for your own decisions.
Which he does and is the point of the article, but why not kneejerk?
Yeah, that was a kneejerk. But I don’t come here to read the actual articles, you gauche little man! The very idea!

I think this will be worth seeing. I’m not a huge horror movie fan, but I do love all those old late 70s / early 80s horror movies.
If thinking men competing in women’s sports is giant crock of shit makes me a bigot, then I guess I’m a bigot.

A mere generation ago you were a bigot if you didn’t support sex-separated sports leagues.
I wonder if this is just revenge over nobody watching the WNBA. Eventually Lebron’s gonna play for the Mystics in drag.
Denis Rodman already did the drag thing.

For those of you who think I have “folded” I have not. There’s a group of us working on getting the rules changed but we are going to fight it offline, not in the name-calling angry world of social media. I’m choosing to move on in a positive way.
Its like she doesn’t even #hashtag.
working on getting the rules changed
I though the rules were already that women’s sports are for women, not men.
But the rules don’t have 60-page definitions of “men” and “women” any other possibility. Don’t worry, a few large committees will hash this all out in a couple years, including their legal teams, and it will only cost you the equivalent of a cup of coffee at an expensive cafe each month.
Easily done:
Eligibility for participating in a league is based on the athlete’s sex, not gender. Sex will be determined by either (a) the sex stated on the athlete’s original, unamended birth certificate or (b) by genetic testing.
There will be no discrimination against athletes based on their gender; male athletes may present as women while competing in the men’s league, and female athletes may present as men while competing in the women’s league. We encourage everyone to use an athlete’s preferred pronoun, as a matter of common courtesy.
However, testosterone boosters will still be disallowed steroids.
I don’t understand how someone can be proud of winning this, nor do I understand how people can cheer this on.
I’m really, really hoping that the Lizzy DNA debacle is identity politics jumping the shark. Most normal people I know (read: non-rabid Leftists) don’t buy that shit and are sick of it.
Tyler Cowen has served up a dish of lukewarm mashed potatoes at Bloomberg (so solly, no linky) about how political correctness is going to hurt the Demos more than the rest of us.
A (possibly bad) idea for Glib content… A la the “What We Are Reading” articles, would it be inappropriate to have a “What We Are Investing In” segment? Some people view talking about financial matters in public as distasteful…
I just assume that everyone here is investing their money in booze, fast cars and loose women.
More seriously, the founders might not go for it is because they don’t want to give the appearance of offering financial advice due to liability.
Yes. A guy I know well from a football board who is a big time investment banker has always refused to comment on investing at all for exactly that reason.
Those are great investments… The returns rock.
I’d advise against this for fear of something running afoul of SEC rules. I suspect Swissy would know more about those than I do, or is he in the Chocolate side of the Helvetic enterprise?
I hear ya, thanks. Figured there’d be a good reason there’s really no talk of that kind here.
I suspect a goodly number of folks will just point to Bogleheads
I’ve been following the robo-advisors a bit. I’ve got my new job’s 401k with one, and have a brokerage account with Schwab using one as well. Basically, you give it your risk profile and funds, and it keeps you at your target allocation. I finally met with a financial advisor earlier this week, so we’ll see what his opinion on those accounts are when I get my initial write up.
I use Schwab as well. Mostly I have a lot of respect for the intelligence of the Glibs and am curious how they approach investment. I’ve got my ideas, but 2 heads et al…
I just picked a bunch of whatever my 401K offered.
Most have been pretty good. The one exception is this one: EKWAX
I’ve been dropping the % allocated to it and am hoping it goes back up to a reasonable amount before dumping it.
I don’t know enough about investing to do it wisely. Several articles that I read stated that many professional brokers and most people who try to manage their portfolios by picking and choosing individual stocks end up doing worse than just putting their money into an index fund, so I just picked a Vanguard index fund, poured everything into it, and leave it alone. Overall I’ve been pretty satisfied with that, although it doesn’t produce eye-popping 30% gains…
You say you don’t know enough about investing wisely, but you demonstrate that you actually do.
Sure, parents must take responsibility, but we can’t be oblivious to the realities. What about single parents? What about parents who aren’t tech savvy? Parents who work two jobs to get by? I’m a married, relatively comfortable father of two. I’m a tech journalist with a secure understanding of games and how they work.
Techno Barbie says, “Responsibility is haaard.”
Yo, is Grrizzly–or any Russian speaker around? Got a favor for some translations for my next piece.
I have to go to bed fairly soon. If anyone sees this light the signal for the Afternoon Links or whenever.
Thanks!
Learning to bargain for sex in yet another language? Good on ya.
Pussy is pussy in every language, son.
🙂
No problem. Let me know in the afternoon links.
Well kids, I got my ballot in the mail yesterday and filled it out this morning. I am ashamed to say that this is the first time in my life I’ve voted straight party ticket (R obviously). I have major problems with many portions of the Pachyderm platform, but the Jackasses are so insane, so unhinged and so dangerous that for the first time, I’m embracing pure pragmatism. They cannot be allowed to gain power and the only realistic option to prevent that from happening is voting R.
You may now begin calling me a yokel, fake libertarian and a crypto-republican who likes pot and hookers.
Damn Yokel! Voting is worthless.
I’m not going to vote this year.

I’m enjoying the Polis ads where he says his health plan will save money while insuring everyone. Hmmm…. I seem to recall hearing that claim a few years ago…. It must’ve ended up working because I haven’t heard much since.
Solidarity, Comrades!
Amazon just raised its minimum wage to $15, but that’s not enough for some progressive politicians.
Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders sent a letter to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos on Tuesday scolding the company for allegedly distributing a 45-minute instructional video to managers at recently-acquired grocery chain Whole Foods on how to defuse union organizing.
“Workers’ rights do not stop at the minimum wage, and raising the pay of your lowest-paid workers, while important, does not give you a free pass to engage in potentially illegal anti-union behavior,” Massachusetts Democrat Warren and Vermont independent Sanders wrote.
——–
The letter to Bezos refers to a video originally reported by Gizmodo in early September that allegedly told team leaders how to recognize signs of unrest among workers, and provided arguments for why a union would not be in the interests of the company or its workforce.
“Our business model is built upon speed, innovation, and customer obsession—things that are generally not associated with unions,” the video said, according to Gizmodo. “When we lose sight of those critical focus areas we jeopardize everyone’s job security: yours, mine, and the associates’.”
The senators’ letter raised concerns that, if genuine, the video would constitute violations of the National Labor Relations Act, the law that protects worker organizing. Specifically, suggestions that a facility might close down if employees organize and any attempt to spy on union activity could be grounds for a complaint to the National Labor Relations Board.
“things that are generally not associated with unions” Understatement, they call that.
By all means, let’s get that federal thumb back on the scale of economic justice, now that the economy is starting to pick up steam.
that’s not enough for some progressive politicians
It never is, and never will be. The sooner people learn this, the better.
Will Bezos learn? The bazillionaires in Silicon Valley?
potentially illegal anti-union behavior
Trying to convince them otherwise is illegal?
Actually, yes.
It’s pretty ridiculous but basically a Owner/Manager saying anything that can be construed as negative about a union, or potential (inevitable) consequences of Uninonizing, can be seen as a threat, and is illegal.
The basic rule of thumb is that a manager can say verifiable facts, give personal opinions, and give examples of why they don’t need a union. What’s not allowed is threats or promises related to voting for or against a union.
Of course, I am not a labor lawyer, but I don’t think that labor law would prohibit someone from saying they would close if they were unionized when there wasn’t an organizing campaign going on. Not sure about that.
Look if i can’t speak in Hyperbole, why do i even come here…
I just assume that everyone here is investing their money in booze, fast cars and loose women.
Guns. Don’t forget guns.
I did ok with my guns, gold and sin portfolio after the 2007 crash.
It’s pretty ridiculous but basically a Owner/Manager saying anything that can be construed as negative about a union, or potential (inevitable) consequences of Uninonizing, can be seen as a threat, and is illegal.
“I don’t think this enterprise will survive for long with Richard Trumka as a non-executive director,” might be problematic, then.
My conversations about unionizing have basically been along the lines of:
Do you want two bosses? Because with a union, you will have your hospital boss, and your union boss.
Do you want more bureaucracy? Because with a union, you will answer to the hospital bureaucracy, and to the union bureaucracy.
Do you want more conflict at work? Because a union exists to resolve labor management conflicts, and will create them to justify itself whenever it feels the need.
There’s also –
– any increase you might see in salary will be siphoned off and donated to the Democrat of your union boss’s choice
– your schedule will change every week and will be whatever the guy who’s been there next longer than you says it is
I would be glad to have them here for however long they remain leftists
