I can’t believe you guys pretended like you were disappointed there weren’t enough links yesterday. If this is where you get your news, its all rapesquatches and destruction.
Vox takes a paste-eating, “burn it all down” approach to the Brett Kavanaugh appointment. Trigger warning: Vox
Wow, me and Elizabeth Warren agree on something. John Kerry IS a giant asshole. But probably not wrong here.
If this happened in Florida, someone would be dead. But UK, so this clown got away.
Guys, do we really WANT robots to be able to climb stairs?
Of all the things that I thought would happen to the GOP under Trump, growing a set of balls is the last thing I suspected. My feeling is that there’s a polarity swap happening between the Stupid and the Evil parties.
Its been a crazy week at work, and I feel about as weird and strung out as this.
You just know someone here was the paste-eater in school.
Totally not me, tho.
NOW HIT THAT ISH !
I need to listen to that album again. I remember it being consistently pretty good.

29 can blow out the candle.
Happy birthday. Is it snowing there? My brother just left Nederland to go to Iceland and stay in an amazing AirBnB house on a lake with its own hot tub. I think he’s the smart one.
It snowed from Monday – Thursday, sunny today and tomorrow, more snow tomorrow.
Good for my trees.
You’re growing Thunder Fuck?
I ummm…. have no idea what you’re talking about…
And I’m sure not putting it in my search history, I want to be on the
supreme court someday.
I, err, a friend told me, yeah, that’s it, a friend told me that Matanuska Thunder Fuck is a variety of marijuana popular in Alaska.
Nederland, is that where Ned Nederlander is from?
Ned Nederlander is from Palmdale, Ca.
Happy birthday!
Happy Birthday
*throws confetti*
Happy birthday, my bosom buddy.
Because you wouldn’t normally immediately go off topic with tits?
Q was asked by the Glibs staff not to first-post his chick links, and he has gracefully and politely done a great job of honoring our request. We appreciate it, and will happily tolerate him throwing them up front on his birthday.
I was not aware. And I was just being glib anyway. I already wished him happy birthday in the am links, so I thought I should start busting his balls. Thanks for the heads-up, Brett.
Happy birthday to my favorite purveyor of T&A.
Happy Birthday! Send yourself some tiddy and azz pics sir.

I haven’t voted for a republican since 2000, but damn am I considering it for the midterm. Also, I would have shot that clown.
My ballot in November will have as many candidates per office as this one.
Being in a swing state my vote might actually count.
I was considering the straight R ticket to reward them, but fuck. I can’t vote for DeWine. So far, about the only thing that looks interesting on my ballot is Issue 1.
Hmm
About the only part that gives me pause is:
Of course, I’m willing to bet that the amount of money saved will be nil, as the state gov will find some way to spend it. And if you look at the Opposition, you can see that (at least here) the Republicans still want to keep up that drug warrior title.
I haven’t voted since 2004, and never for a Republican, but I’m punching R where available down the entire ballot this year. I’m doing this for no particular reason except that I live in a blue state and it’s more of a “hey, what does this button do” kind of impulse.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_B._Calhoun#Mouse_experiments
“Initially, the population grew rapidly, doubling every 55 days. The population reached 620 by day 315, after which the population growth dropped markedly, doubling only every 145 days. The last surviving birth was on day 600, bringing the total population to a mere 2200 mice, even though the experiment setup allowed for as many as 3840 mice in terms of nesting space. This period between day 315 and day 600 saw a breakdown in social structure and in normal social behavior. Among the aberrations in behavior were the following: expulsion of young before weaning was complete, wounding of young, inability of dominant males to maintain the defense of their territory and females, aggressive behavior of females, passivity of non-dominant males with increased attacks on each other which were not defended against. After day 600, the social breakdown continued and the population declined toward extinction. During this period females ceased to reproduce. Their male counterparts withdrew completely, never engaging in courtship or fighting and only engaging in tasks that were essential to their health. They ate, drank, slept, and groomed themselves – all solitary pursuits. Sleek, healthy coats and an absence of scars characterized these males. They were dubbed “the beautiful ones.” Breeding never resumed and behavior patterns were permanently changed.”
I DON’T LIKE EXPERIMENTS THAT TURN THE FRIGGIN’ MICE GAY!
Calhoun Mice Experiments sounds like a solid band name.
Did some of the mice stay secluded and only played video games?

Hillary lost? Get rid of the Electoral College!
Kavanaugh confirmed? Get rid of the Supreme Court!
The backflip was fucking awesome.
Was that Star Jones haranguing him outside the BAFroom?
Fun fact: I knew Star Jones ex husband, Al Reynolds, in college. Suffice to say, we were all pretty surprised married.
Hurricane damage is wacky from Michael. More damage in Georgia than Florida so far. Weird.
So, it’s music then. I have a dream I’ve seen the light
I love this tune
More: Fools Gold
Love this track, but we used to joke about having to get the 5-disc set of Fool’s Good (since it was so long)
Yeah. I know a guy in Tallahassee whose mom lives in central GA. They said her place got hit harder than theirs.
Part of it is the buidling codes. For every house that was built pre-Andrew building codes that got destroyed in those coastal towns, there’s at least one that is pretty much whole except for missing siding/roof panels that got knocked clean off it’s pilings. I’m not in love with government building codes, but considering how much of the coast Citizens (the state-backed insurer of last resort) insures, it’s probably the fiscally responsible thing.
Also, $8B is a lot of damage, but I thought it would be at least twice that.
I’m not in love with government building codes, but considering how much of the coast Citizens (the state-backed insurer of last resort) insures, it’s probably the fiscally responsible thing.
Of course, you could have the codes done as a private matter in order to be eligible for commercial property insurance, rather than a state code for government insurance.
Right. I phrased it that way on purpose. The reason beach houses used to be tiny shacks is that no one would insure them.
Isn’t the insurance done by the government, or their proxies? Its still not feasible.
Currently, the state of Florida insures something like 90% of all residential structures within 800 meters of the coast. My family has a very nice beach house about 20 miles east of Mexico Beach. It lost some siding and some exterior things (like the boardwalk required so we don’t disturb the dunes… which are gone again). But the lot next to it, someone built an easily $1M rental property with something like 6 bedrooms and a pool. I don’t think either structure would be viable on the commericial insurance market for anything my parents would be willing to pay.
However, I would like to see the shakeout from this storm. If, for example, post-Andrew structures were $1B in damage and there were 50,000 of those and pre-Andrew or commercial buildings wer $7B and there were 100K of those, you could pretty easily determine the going premium/value ratio. (Last claim my parents had was 2005 — TS Dennis floated the septic tank, pre-movein)
I think it would dramatically lower the value of property along the coast of FL. Whether that is a bad thing depends on if you are a buyer or a seller.
Final thought, I think Citizens had like a $12B war chest, based on a 2005-2006 two year season, they were predicting needing $35B to make it “whole” to commerical insurance capitalization standards, so they are technically financially good for making right even if they are the only insurance to pay claims to the estimated $8B in damages in FL.
For those who haven’t had to deal with such things… insurance in Florida has been hell since 2005. I got forced onto Citizens for a few years, then back off, then back on, then back off…
There for quite a while pretty much every insurance company left the state. Citizens is damn expensive for the coverage you get, but at least they didn’t pull my mortgage because I couldn’t buy insurance. That would have been worse.
Stone Roses and an All-Timer for me. Great, great band
Seconded. I saw them right after Second Coming came out. One of my best concert memories.

Ah.
I really should pay better attention to things other than Q’s posts.

Awesome. We’re actually watching it later tonight for family movie night. Kids think it’s hilarious.

I’ve seen the Dickies a bunch of times.
Never saw the movie though.
The movie is 80s classic. And it has John Vernon playing a hard ass cop.
“The 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey found that 54 percent of transgender people in unsupportive families had attempted suicide, while *37 percent of those in supportive families had attempted suicide*.”
(Emphasis mine)
https://durangoherald.com/youth-suicide-in-la-plata-county#article-245096
No disrespect to these kids suffering from illness, but 37% fucking percent still attempt suicide even in SUPPORTIVE families? Sounds like gender dysphoria is an exceptionally grave mental health problem that should be confronted with aggressive psychiatric intervention. Even schizophrenia doesn’t have suicide attempt rates that high.
hmmm, it’s almost like support or non-support isn’t the issue at all……
The obvious conclusion will not be reached.
“A 2016 study found almost 30 percent of gay, lesbian and bisexual high school students surveyed across 25 states had attempted suicide in the past 12 months, while only 6.4 percent of the heterosexual students had attempted suicide, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report.”
Although surveys are crap.
Well, they must suck at suicide. If 30% attempt it, the failure rate must be astronomical. I wonder what the success rate actually is? If 30% attempt suicide, but only 5% succeed, I would suspect that most of those attempts aren’t real, but are drama queening attention grabs. Seriously, how hard is it to kill yourself if you really want to?
This is from India, not the US, but it is the only one I found that listed actual rates of suicide and not just attempts:
Source.
FWIW I suspect the rate of “support” in India is approximately zero.
40% suicide rate after reassignment surgery.
What about the ones who don’t get it. Is 40% high or low for intense gender dysmorphia?
Why are crazy people allowed to roam the hallways of the Capital building ambushing Senators? Somebody is going to get killed.
Or at least shot on the softball fields, right?
Never heard of such a thing
Something, something, representative democracy, something, accessible to the common man.
You used to be able to visit the President, for that matter.
Sure – and the President would beat the fuck out of you with a cane if you tried to shoot him.
‘Twas a simpler time.
On a somewhat related note, for a while we had a President assassinated every other decade (Lincoln, 1865; Garfield, 1881; McKinley, 1901), and yet the country kept on moving.
“Why are crazy people allowed to roam the hallways of the Capital building ambushing Senators?”
You mean like Jim Acosta and Jill Filipovic?
What caliber for agile robots? I’m thinking .308 or 12-gauge slugs.

Their parents let them believe they were the center of the universe… ugh.
Umm… just leave him there. It would have been better if you did it when he was 6 months old, but it will stop if you just leave them there.
Why, its almost like you get more of what you reward.
Way to reinforce a dynamic where he is the boss of you. I’m sure that won’t cause problems later.
This is easier said than done. My daughter was a total night owl since birth, and we had to gate her in her room. I look back on it and laugh now when we had videos of her crying for an ipad/this/that/whatever when she was 3 and it was 2 am. Lights on, shit everywhere in her room.
So, I ended up sleeping on her floor nearly every night until she was NINE. It just worked out easier than the alternative. I would lay there for about 1/2 hour, she would fall asleep, and I would get up and leave — but I have to be super stealth to get out of the room. It was basically the only issue we had with her when she was younger.
“How did they get that way?”
Stupid mothers?
“And why would you call your son ‘buddy’?”
Cause we’re not a bunch of kiddie didlers? Maybe Elon was right about that British pedo guy…
In order of use my sons get called:

2) bubba
3) son
4) goddammit!

I listened to that album over and over as a kid. Might just rebuy it now.

my favorite is how those magazines like to mourn the fact that men don’t show emotion. But then when a man like Kavanaugh shows righteous emotion, he’s too emotional and unstable and clearly not fit for office.
I’m not sure what’s harder to believe, that they really want emotionless and impartial men, or emotionless and impartial jurists.
From the comments
Hey! That’s how I shop!
I already overdosed on crazy feminist with the previous link. I cant slog more of that.
“This figure is not only inaccurate, but also it has no basis in reality. Reporting it publicly as a valid frequency rate with any empirical basis is either scientifically negligent or fraudulent.”
I’d actually read somewhere where that “statistic” came into being. A feminist writing a book asked a (presumably also feminist) police officer friend how many rape claims (I don’t remember if it was charges, arrests, convictions or accusations) were false and the friend essentially guessed 2%. From there, the figure got rolled to the most expansive (if it was 2% of arrests it got turned into 2% of accuations).
I’ve noticed recently, especially around the Kavanaugh thing, that the claim has been changing from “2%” to “statistics range from 2-10%”. And then they act like that’s totally normal, which is ridiculous. a 10% false accusation rate is literally 5x as common as 2%, it’s the difference between 1 in 50, and 1 in freaking 10!
If 10% of rape accusations are false, that’s a pretty huge problem!
Yeah. 1 in 10 odds are shit (i mean so are 1 in 50). I would never try to ruin someones life if i knew i had a 1 in 10 chance of being wrong.
to put it in perspective, there were like 90,000 rapes reported in 2015. So that would mean there were as much as 9,000 false rape accusations in just one year.
But #BelieveWomen
If 10% of rape accusations are false, that’s a pretty huge problem!
Not for women, it isn’t.
True, that’s what really matters
If 10% of rape accusations are false, that’s a pretty huge problem!
And other studies peg the number as high as 40%. A lot of it stems from defining false accusations and what standards you use to determine truth or falsehood.
The one thing the left never engages with, primarily because it utterly destroys their narrative, is that there are 2 kinds of false accusations.
1) She knows she is lying and is doing it on purpose for some reason
2) She honestly believes she is telling the truth but is simply wrong. Either she mis-remembers events or considered legal actions as being illegal
I can easily see fewer than 10% of claimed rape victims falling into group 1, group 2 however yeah that is way higher than 10*
I’m disappointed that you don’t understand why we were disappointed.
Is that you Dad?
More like the wife. amirite?

STEVE SMITH frequents these here parts. That half man/half ape monster is known for his rampages. Of course we are going to upset about missing links.
From the Warren article. I Like the Protestor with the sign that says: only 6 in 5k Rapists go to jail.
I mean, at least try to make your fake statistics sound reasonable. But i guess that’s the scary thing. In these peoples minds, blatant lies seem reasonable.
Facts are, not surprisingly, uninteresting to people who are ruled by emotion, and assume everyone else is ruled by emotion.
They would be happier if 6 in 5 rapists went to jail.
Didn’t some prog say that he’d prefer that 10 in 1 rapists went to jail?
Better for 100 innocent rapists be convicted than one guilty one go free.
I’m pretty sure you’re reading the stat wrong. All men are rapists, but only 6 in 5000 of them get convicted.
6-5000? Sounds familiar.
Pretty much. The radfems were saying all sex is rape not long ago, and its not like they’ve gotten less rad.
Google news puked up this Amanda Marcotte fever dream for me. Because they are the gatekeepers who will protect my gentle sensibilities from teh FAIK NOOZE!
Despite all this, in a story that’s become all too predictable, Trump’s approval ratings don’t budge, lingering a few percentage points north or south of 40 percent. He’s not popular and never has been, but it’s clear that the 40 percent of voters who love him really do not care if he’s a crook. And despite the GOP’s widespread corruption, FiveThirtyEight still gives the party a four-in-five chance of holding a Senate majority in the midterm elections.
It’s easy to chalk off this widespread indifference to criminality and corruption among Republican voters as evidence that such voters are themselves amoral. But that reading is overly simplistic. It’s highly unlikely that 40 percent of the country thinks it’s no big deal to cheat or steal or lie under oath or shrug off a murder likely ordered by your son-in-law’s friend. Nor is it satisfying to simply blame partisanship. Democratic voters are also highly partisan, but don’t seem to have nearly the same tolerance for immoral behavior being conducted in their name.
Instead, the likeliest reason for this willingness of Republican voters to indulge all sorts of wicked behavior in pursuit of power is that they’ve convinced themselves that the “other side” does it just as much. It’s an attitude called “what-about-ism,” and it allows Republican voters to tell themselves that their side can be as shady and corrupt as they want to be, because Democrats do it, too.
Of course, the fly in that particular ointment is that Democrats do not, in fact, do it too. Barack Obama did not put an accused sexual predator on the Supreme Court after that person repeatedly lied under oath, nor did he shrug it off when an American journalist was killed because he happened to be fond of the alleged murderer. Democrats are not trying to steal elections through widespread cheating. Hillary Clinton was no tax fraud and was able to prove it by releasing her tax returns, something Trump continues to refuse to do.
This disparity, I think, points to one reason why conspiracy theories tend to proliferate more on the right than the left. In the absence of real corruption and crime among Democrats or leftists, conservatives instead rely on conspiracy theories to justify their continued belief that Democrats are just as corrupt as Republicans, if not more so.
Blah blah fucking blah ruination of democracy why them hicks no vote fer my team?
Democrats are pure as the driven snow. Republikkkins are so evil they make Beelzebub look like Mister Rogers.
Holy shit! She voted for both a forcible rapist, and his blatantly influence peddling & spectacularly incompetent-at-governance wife and she pens this?!?!?
Either she is utterly sociopathic, or she is so stupid that she runs the risk of drowning if she walks outside in the rain.
A little bit of option 1… a little bit of option 2.
Look, those concessions to corrupt Ds were just little things, hardly worth mentioning. Just people who chair the appropriations committee dodging taxes and saying they didn’t know what the law was, or people with a freezer full of bribe money. And sure, there are a few TEAM BLUE rapists, but if you consider the rape plague that TEAM RED candidate would subject the people and the environment to, why these are just trivialities!
Look, those concessions to corrupt Ds were just little things, hardly worth mentioning. Just people who chair the appropriations committee dodging taxes and saying they didn’t know what the law was, or people with a freezer full of bribe money.
Honestly, that’s something I’ve noticed in the media overall. And I’m not even 100% sure its completely partisan, so much as geographic. The press treats crooked (predominantly Democratic) machine pols as somehow or another “romantic”. Sure they gave out contracts to their friends and family, but they also came around to the local family that lost their job and would “take care” of them. And heck, those old players had style. It’s suburban corruption (and hence more Republican corruption) they see as inexcusable.
They’ve convinced themselves that the only thing Hillary Clinton did was send a few emails in a way that was totally not illegal but upset Republicans because they hate her.
Calling out their hypocrisy really just gets tiresome.
“Democratic voters are also highly partisan, but don’t seem to have nearly the same tolerance for immoral behavior being conducted in their name.”
hahaha that’s perfect! You can’t even parody these people anymore
Polls prove Hillary has a 97% chance of winning the election. Just remember that.
The problem isn’t the 97% likelihood (although, it could be wrong). It’s the people who conflate arbitrarily high likelihood with certainty. If we ran the election again a few thousand times, maybe Clinton does win 97% of the time. But that’s not this works…
not how this works*
Democratic voters are also highly partisan, but don’t seem to have nearly the same tolerance for immoral behavior being conducted in their name.
That must be why Charlie Rangel won not one but two elections after having been censured by the House for ethics violations, and basically got to retire of old age instead of facing any real repercussions.
Or why Bob Menendez will almost certainly win re-election, and was endorsed by several prominent New Jersey Democrats.
Or why Al Franken won re-election even though his first election was fraudulent (although they eventually drove him out for fake-groping someone).
Or…
I should say that Franken’s first election was questionable rather than fraudulent. Those ballots in the back of a van may have been legitimate. Of course, they may also have been only some of the missing ballots.
I may be a flying reindeer
I hate to say this, but the story about ballots being found in the back of a car is bogus.
The story about people who weren’t eligible to vote, still casting ballots is real. There is also some pretty good evidence that a lot of kids going to THE U of M (from Wisconsin) also cast votes that they shouldn’t have been eligible.
Fair enough.
However, that election was fraught with issues. I think leaving it as “questionable” is valid.
I should have said “fraught with other issues, too”. I missed your second paragraph.
John Kelly or John Kerry?
/easily confused Muppet.
Chelsea Handler calls out Lindsey Graham for being closeted. Lindsey Graham responds in the gayest way possible – conducting an interview with TMZ. She doesn’t know his truth.
For the record, I actually find Graham’s denial to here to be rather ambiguous.
As in, he’s gay, but doesn’t practice…
So he’s a master?
At debating.
As long as he’s not diddling kids or animals I just don’t care. Let him stay in the closet if he wants to.
^This^
I care how he votes, that’s all.
I think it is perfect what she did. They are visibly falling apart daily. Their behavior is becoming increasingly unhinged and extreme. At some point they are going to start losing even blue states.
She’s a cunt for doing that.
I mean, she was a cunt long before this. But with Graham, you do have someone some people may see as as something of a cliche. An anti-gay Republican war hawk from the South. I think her biggest issue is that, in typical batshit crazy leftwing fashion, she comes off as shrill and mean rather than rational or funny. Despite her ostensibly being a comedian.
But we all know Lindsey Graham isn’t gay. He totally has a girlfriend who lives in Cana…err, Austria. That’s why we’ve never met her.
It’s only wrong to out someone if they’re a Democrat. If they committed thinkcrime, it’s totes OK to slut shame, sex shame, queer shame, or whatever. They deserve it for holding the wrong beliefs.
Not only that, but if you are a publication that publishes a private video without someones consent that outs them as gay, and ignore a court order to take it down you can get the entire proggy establishment to agree with you for your free speech rights. And TOS. But i repeat myself.
Hulk Hogan’s sex video was a gay sex video??
(I never watched it. I suppose you could be referring to something other than Gawker.)
Woah. Slow down there. The Hulkster just fucked his friends wife with his consent.
I might be crossing narratives. I know Gawker outed Peter Thiel…

It’s hard to see what was controversial about the 2015 study besides that it didn’t produce the results some people wanted. I’m also unaware of any study done on anything similar to this (male versus female athletes as one great example) where women suffer fewer injuries. So it leads me to believe that either:
1. They are going out of their way to coddle these females during training to avoid injury in ways that they would never consider for men
2. Someone is cooking the numbers
We’ve already seen in Army Ranger training that women were given preferential treatment. They were determined to get female graduates.

He’ll be a queer cocksucker that should be ashamed of himself up until the instant they find some Dem operative who is willing to go on record saying he tried to rape her in high school. Then he will be a serial rapist.
It would be interesting to see what would happen if they found some gay guy who claimed Graham tried to rape him in high school. Trying to figure out what the correct application of victim points was would be very interesting.
I mean… How much trouble did Kevin Spacey Get in?
Obviously he’s a rapist who rapes to cover up his latent homosexuality. Not there’s anything wrong with that. The homosexuality that is, not the rape.

Yeah, the people who said he couldn’t win clearly don’t know how much Utah Mormons absolutely love Mitt. Its very annoying.

Wow, me and Elizabeth Warren agree on something. John Kerry IS a giant asshole. But probably not wrong here.
I wish she did agree John Kerry is an asshole. But I’m pretty sure it John Kelly you are referring too. Of course, if you are writing this from Japan then ignore me and carry on.
She’s fighting back by reminding the country how many people think she’s an idiot. Masterful! If you’re the WaPo.
Finally.
Time for some beer.
Problematic
The lawyer most responsible for winning a $289 million verdict against Bayer AG may end up wiping it out.
Brent Wisner was the lead trial attorney who in August convinced a jury that Monsanto Co.’s Roundup weed killer caused his client’s cancer. His compelling arguments and marshaling of evidence resulted in a blockbuster verdict that has spooked investors looking ahead to thousands of similar lawsuits across the U.S. pending against Monsanto, which Bayer acquired in June.
But Wisner’s closing arguments at trial irked the judge handling the case so profoundly that she’s considering tossing the verdict and ordering a new trial. The lawyer told jurors that Monsanto executives in a company board room were “waiting for the phone to ring” and that “behind them is a bunch of champagne on ice,” according to a court filing. He said that “if the damages number isn’t significant enough, champagne corks will pop.”
At a hearing Wednesday, San Francisco Judge Suzanne Ramos Bolanos cited a number of reasons why she’s inclined to set aside or dramatically cut the verdict. But she singled out the champagne comment as she questioned whether Wisner’s impassioned rhetoric crossed a line. Wisner also told jurors their decision could “change the world” and they could become a “part of history.” Bolanos said the comments may prove “sufficiently prejudicial” to warrant a new trial.
Oh, come on. We’ve got to stick it to the man, every chance we get.
Let’s just ignore that the whole verdict is a farce and not supported by the evidence.
Jury trials make (some) sense for judging guilt or the facts of simple laws. Putting a question that requires years of technical and professional expertise to even understand, never mind attempt to answer, to a jury of people doesn’t make a damn bit of sense. There is a reason the question posed to the jury is supposed to be whether the harm was knowingly caused by the accused.
This, times a thousand.
What little I see of scientific evidence in the courts drives me nuts.
I was working with DNA in a lab when Barry Scheck was questioning the LA forensics lab’s practices. He asked about the expiration date on their EDTA. EDTA is a calcium chelator. It is a preservative. You make up a concentrate and it lasts for years and years and years. They do positive and negative controls as a part of the assay – which we were shown. So we know to an absolute certainty that the EDTA was perfectly fine. Scheck knew this when he asked the question. It was a completely dishonest question. Yet it seemed to persuade quite a few folks, even among media “experts”. And that is an extremely simple issue that was not at all pivotal to the case.
Imagine 12 lawyers trying to decide if vaccines cause autism. They wouldn’t have a chance in hell of figuring it out – and they are highly educated and above average intelligence as a group. Toss that question to an average jury where they are likely to be slightly below average as a rule (because the above average folks would have a higher chance of getting out of jury duty)…. yeah. They ain’t getting that right.
And not the first time our courts have done this. We seem to have a court system that is completely untethered to reality and scientific evidence. The only consolation for Bayer on this one is that at least it isn’t as farcical as the talcum powder verdict.
Maybe Kavanaugh can help the courts out on this one. We really need better guidance on the standard of proof required before you can determine fault.
Heck, even something like cigarette smoking doesn’t result in cancer in most cases, and many cases of cancer – even lung cancer – are not related to cigarettes. But if you have lung cancer and have ever seen a cigarette, you can get a big payout.
In a case like the talcum powder thing, the notion that externally applied inert powder can cause cancer of an entirely internal organ is laughable, yet it is now the legal determination of the US that regularly using talcum powder not only causes cancer, but it was foreseeable that such cancers would be the result and negligent of the manufacturer to allow it to be used.
Dow Corning had a nice little breast implant business, before a run of TV news magazine stories claiming that they were hideously dangerous, would rupture and cause horrible auto-immune diseases. It sounded nonsensical to me at the time… but it didn’t save them, nor did the scientific research that was on their side. Eventually they were proven right – but they had long been out of business by then. And women have been using inferior saline implants ever since.
The whole thing is just insane.
Those ballots in the back of a van may have been legitimate. Of course, they may also have been only some of the missing ballots.
Pre-sorted, to make counting them easier.
To the extent that it matters, I’m not gay.
To the extent that it matters, I don’t give much of a shit, either way.
I’ve got to say, though, Graham’s “Why don’t we see if he floats?” retort made me like him more than I ever imagined possible.
I’ve got to say, though, Graham’s “Why don’t we see if he floats?” retort made me like him more than I ever imagined possible.
Between that and today’s “Your parents are using you as tools” retort, I’m starting to think the GOP might, just might, be starting to get a clue. Despite the rhetoric from popular culture, the country really doesn’t have much of an appetite for the whole Social Justice Cadre act. It’s popular with a really small, really visible segment of society. That was reveal;ed in the recent Atlantic article. Telling them to bugger off might cost you an invite onto Colbert or Fallon, but it might well gain you votes.
Speaking of crazies ambushing people– we stopped at a roadside farmer’s stand to pick up a couple of items. 60F and sun was starting to come out so left the window cracked. Some asshat comes up and decides to lecture us and insist that we should immediately return to the truck and move/open windows more. I cut her (and my wife who was falling into the trap of defensively responding to the statements) off, but crazy lady waits in her car the whole time until we walk out with our produce.
Thank you state legislators for passing a bullshit “Good Samaritan” law that protects these nazi psychopaths from criminal or civil liability for breaking open car windows, if in their minds, an animal is in “distress”. The only person that would be coming up to other people like that are sanctimonious loons, who are the last ones who should get a free pass on their judgement or actions.
Damn it pisses me off. Fuckers like her would break my property, create a very real danger to my dog from the breaking glass, and cause my dog distress by entering her territory. One of these days, someone like her is going to get their nose broken off by sticking it where it doesn’t belong.
Yup. Ava the Wonderdog used to accompany nearly everywhere when I wasnt working (more often than not the liquor store), and when I left her in the truck, I had the standard, “Dog is fine. A/C is on max. She’s chilling and listening to the radio” note that got posted on both windows.
And my trips were generally 5-10 minutes, but I always wondered when I was going to come out to some lunatic next to my truck.
What’s he listening to?
She fuckin HATES the eagles, man
Well, hate-ed. Sent her on her way last summer.
Been there. Same situation with my wife. I stepped between them and just said “Go away”. She started videoing (I am sure it’s out there somewhere). She said she was going to call the police – “Knock yourself out” is all I said. She babbled o n threateningly for a few more seconds but the last time I said “Look, piss off and mind your own business” I think the situation she had created suddenly sunk in. She turned and left. Over her shoulder she said “You dont deserve a dog!”
Wife and I looked at each other and said at the same time “She’s right about that”.
Funny part of the story – I drove wife to the restaurant for her girl’s night. I sit in the car. I did the girl’s night thing for ten years. I am still the designated driver so now I sit in the car, share hamburgers with my dog, listen to Mark Levin or read this site. So I am parked there reading, I look up and the owner of the business next door is out walking her dog for the evening about ten feet from my car. Guess who….she looked up and noticed me just as I recognized her. I started laughing. Her face turned red with rage and she stomped off.
She is lucky she did that to me. I would never raise my hand to a woman, but instead call the police. One of these days she will do it to someone else and not be so lucky.
“I’d never advocate violence against a woman, but if someone told me they punched her, I’d understand”
“Think about this shit. I buy you a car and you’re gonna let another man drive around in my car? Are you out of your fucking mind?! Shit! God! You’d better recognize … Shit, I don’t even have a Ferrari, but if I saw somebody driving in my Pinto … … That shit would blow like in the Godfather! I’m not saying he should have killed her … … But I understand!” – Chris Rock
Exactly.
“Hey, lady, the longer you keep us so you can flap your fucking gums, the longer it’s going to take my wife and I to finish shopping.”
Need a law requiring manufacturers to put a thermometer in plain sight in the car so passers by will know when its time to break into someone else’s car and rescue Muffin. Maybe have a distress scale indicating degree of distress. Needs to lit for night time rescues, too.
More from the Monsanto hearing:
By the end of the hearing Bolanos said she was considering options including setting aside the punitive damages of $250 million, whittling down the compensatory damages from $33 million to about $9 million, and ordering a new trial. American depositary shares of Leverkusen, Germany-based Bayer jumped 6.3 percent Wednesday to close at $79.50 in New York.
The judge is examining the company’s arguments that there no basis for the jury to conclude that Monsanto is liable for plaintiff Lee Johnson’s non-Hodgkin lymphoma based on his exposure to the key ingredient in Roundup, glyphosate.
Lombardi said the medical evidence at trial was “legally insufficient” to prove exposure to Roundup caused Johnson’s disease. He argued that the diagnosis provided by the plaintiff’s medical expert was “extraordinarily simplistic and deceptive.”
Shocked, I am.

I’m waaay late here, but just wanted to add my congrats to mama, you, and big brother. What a great looking family!
Oh, noes! Teh frat boy culture is everywhere!
WeWork’s drinking culture was so pervasive and problematic, according to the suit, that one co-worker told Anaya that it was “only a matter of time until someone gets raped” at a company event. A WeWork spokesperson declined to comment on the allegations Anaya made about having her photo taken or the company’s alcohol policy.
Anaya’s attorney, Seth Rafkin, told NBC New York that the company never brought up any performance issues. “We also note the obvious: If our client had been a poor performer for a year or more, why didn’t WeWork ever give her a warning or a performance plan, something human resources professionals will tell you is typical practice?” said Rafkin. “And why did the decision to fire her come only after she complained again about a sexual assault and the way it was handled?”
tl;dr- sexual assault accusations, termination, lawsuit
If this was such a horrible place to work, why did she stay for four years? Oh, that’s right. As an employee, she has the “right” to dictate corporate culture and working conditions to her employers.
So…professional grievance monger.
And that’s why you don’t reward behavior like that. It just encourages them.
I should have quoted this part, as well. Reading between the lines, they hired this person. She was probably a pain in the ass and in order to placate her and hopefully avoid litigation, they gave her some bullshit role better suited to her lack of ability. It only encouraged things.
I noticed the women who go on and on about men discriminating against them or what not are some of the worst workers. They want their kudos and more money for putting forth the least effort and when their paycheck or the accolades don’t match what they perceive themselves to be, they scream discrimination.
I don’t know what happened, but we have created a subgroup of folks who believe that they should be rewarded for their mediocrity and will cast themselves as the victim when life doesn’t work out for them.
There are men around like that but fewer of them. This bullshit is going to result in women unable to find employment.
Barefoot, pregnant and back in the kitchen. A return to victorian social norms is something I never would have predicted.
I don’t know what happened, but we have created a subgroup of folks who believe that they should be rewarded for their mediocrity and will cast themselves as the victim when life doesn’t work out for them.
Because it’s tolerated. Rather than showing her the door, they gave her a bullshit play job (probably paying top dollar). It creates a sense of entitlement. It tells them that they’re just super wonderful no matter how badly they screw the pooch. If you give kids enough participation trophies, they’ll begin to think it’s because they’re just such wonderful athletes and of course they didn’t make the MLB because the scout was discriminating against them.
I worked at a startup that had a Culture Team. The whole purpose was to come up with more opportunities for alcohol consumption.
I like that.
It was a fun place to work. Being a married man I didn’t fish off the company pier, but a few did, including the lady in HR. Then we got bought by a bigger company and the fun ended.
Some people like to drink there, so ipso facto, someone will soon be raped.
the left really has become modern puritans
In 2017, she moved to the culture team and worked as a liaison between employees and management.
Okay. I’m going to have to be the dick here. You know what? If your company has a “culture team” and someone working full time as “a liaison between employees and management”, I’m not going to say you deserve this kind of shit. But, what the hell do you expect? Yeah, I know. I’m accusing WeWork of wearing too short a skirt and asking for it. But, when you are so damned eager for your employees’ approval that you give them an inflated sense of entitlement, how surprised should you be when they turn that entitlement on you?
That’s kind of how I feel about my alma mater. You have a gazillion departments devoted to (fake) grievances and diversity but yet, they are surprised when the students are huge dicks towards them and turn the stupidity towards the university.
Well, the university has entire departments telling them that the only reason they’re not the kings and queens of the universe is that the evil patriarchy/wypipo/cis-hetero-patriarchy has conspired to oppress them. It’s hardly surprising that they expect to be treated like the kings and queens of the universe by the institutions telling them that.
In 2017, she moved to the culture team and worked as a liaison between employees and management.
Yeah that deserved to be pointed out. She apparently did a sub-optimal job of molding corporate culture. No wonder they canned her.
Speaking of alcohol-fueled frat boy misogyny- I do believe the bar is open . Time for beers and leers.
Ok, BIF beers bought, bagged, bubble-wrapped, boxed and brought to shippers.
I selected your 8. Hopefully can get it shipped tomorrow.
Christ! should we be shipping already? I thought I had a week or so. Oh well, I got MikeS and IIRC he was late sending out the last time around so he can’t really bitch. Plus his QuadLaser is easily sidestepped.
I think the deadline for delivery is the 6th of November.
And I think I need another beer. 2nd of November.
I was, but I am not a good roll model for anyone.
I mean look, I am necro-posting. That’s not cool at all. Nor is shipping late.

As my colleague Matthew Yglesias noted last week, the Court is now a blunt political instrument, used repeatedly to undermine outcomes of democratic governance — often on behalf of corporate interests.
The Court is a blunt political instrument because assholes like that author of this article caused the government to grow and stick its nose where it doesn’t belong.
Now another one appears primed to enter the lexicon — “impolite arrogant woman.”
That is how White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly described Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) in the days following the Trump administration’s 2017 travel ban, according to emails obtained by BuzzFeed News under the Freedom of Information Act.
That disclosure means the White House may have inadvertently gifted a potent catchphrase for Warren, a 2020 Democratic front-runner, to use as a blunt political instrument.
“Nasty Woman” worked out so well for Hillary Clinton.

You know who else liked to take suppositories?
Happy B-day, Q
Happy Birthday, Q!
LOL Cialis, old man?
Aw, like I’m getting any anyway.
Happy birthday!
And nice funbags in the earlier thread, but I’ll stick with my gallon jug of booze. Less hassle.
Lady, it ain’t the Senator who is ruining your kids’ lives.
Speaking of clowns, we went to see Puddles Pitty Party a couple of weeks ago. Superb show.
They’re almost naked.
Oh, and Happy Birthday to Q, Congrats to Lach, and my condolences to Festus. Maybe I’m caught up.
What happened with Festus? I’m also catching up.
Car crash involving his dad, from what I gathered.

It finally, finally feels like fall here. I bought beer in the can on the way home and plan to drink some in the hot tub. Wooo!
Please reassure us that it’s not some pumpkin spice beer!
Mama’s Lil Yella Pils from Oscar Blues Brewery.
That’s good stuff.
Did you really think I would drink slop?
Of course not! But I did feel the need to remind people who
enjoydrink slop that they are sloppy slop drinkers.Jury summons for the second time in three years. What are the odds?
Or is it because I actually responded to the first summons and showed up for selection, they recycled my name? Punctiliousness screws me again!
I’ve had it 4 times in 6 years. My wife: zero times in ever.
Could it be that’s because you vote and she doesn’t? Not accusing, just guessing.
I have been on a run of “not selected” since my first jury way back in 1983. That one I sat through 3 days of pretrial stuff and then they settled out of court.
Since then I’ve either gotten the “you don’t need to show up” message or sat around all day and never got called. I’ve only been into the courtroom once since, and didn’t get picked. It does seem to go in runs though. I didn’t get called for at least a decade, and then I got 3 in the last 2 years.
I’ve been summoned several times yet never selected. I have a feeling they dont want people like me on a jury…
I was super keyed up from social anxiety. I can’t remember what I was asked or how I responded. Whatever I was selling they weren’t buying.
I was very recently selected for the first time ever and I’ve been eligible for over 28 years now. I’m stoked. If I get booted in voir dire I am going to be very depressed.
My wife got picked on her first jury call a couple of years back. She came back with a good story too…..
They charged a guy with stealing some computers from a warehouse. It was a pretty big case because they had software worth $100k on them.
So the guy they charged was a former employee. They caught the thief on video. The defendant says “that’s not me”, despite the fact that they recovered the computers from his apartment.
The funny part…. the guy is 6’9″ and rail thin with an extremely distinctive look and gangly walk that is impossible to miss. My wife said they laughed out loud when he claimed it wasn’t him on the video.
For you meatatarians, Alton Brown is rebooting Good Eats and he’s updated his ribeye show with a reverse sear. Starts Monday night.
Is he going to dial back the smug?
He’s a gun-toter. I forgive him his smug.
