So someone from here (actually not sure who) set up a Glibertarians Discord server a while ago and John Titor and Rick C-137 lured me to join and then were @-ing me so much derp every day while I was on my book deadline that I had no time to check the actual site. But now my book is done and Titor is apparently in the Canuck military (I didn’t know this until like a week ago) and is at officer training for the next two and a half months or so. Without the support of his evil puppetmaster, Rick’s derp inundation receded enough that I was able to escape, replenish my energy sources, and return here to be accosted by whatever derp all of you can serve. And STEVE SMITH.

My kid going to NDSU doesn’t even seem to know who they are. But he isn’t a sports guy, so that may be more him than a real statement on the loss of a real rivalry.
The old timers still let Sioux “slip” from time to time. And at hockey games “home of the SIOUX” at the end of the anthem is still loud. But, other than hockey fans it is starting to fade a bit. In 10-15 years youngsters will wonder what all the hub-bub was about.

My niece wants to go to Duluth for school. She is a legit aspie and not too good at handling a lot of social interactions or planning or reality yet, so we’re trying to get her to stay closer. But then again I ran away to Las Vegas as soon as I could when I graduated and I was only slightly more adept than her at that point.

I have one daughter who is looking at going there next year. She wants to do either music or dental school. Dental school seems like a better career choice to me, but as she reminds me endlessly, I am old and nearly senile.

I was down in Fargo today (no, I was not renting a wood chipper) and stopped by Flatland Brewery. They had a rye “heffe” on tap that I fell in love with. So, I got a growler and am now enjoying it as a back to a Glencairn of High West Rendezvous Rye. The best pair since Q’s last comment.
Tonight was a bar crawl through the Cleveland brewery area, ending at Great Lakes. Unfortunately, the Indians lost, so there was no big celebration. I did learn that GLBC has picked up a crowler machine though.
Just downed a Fat Tire from New Belgium Brewing. Goes nicely with a well-broiled cheeseburger (medium rare, thanks).

2015 TerraNoble Carignan Gran Reserva. A suggestion from the local wine store to go with tonight’s rib-eyes. I don’t believe I’ve ever had 100% Carignan before, and I’m enjoying it. Lots of tannin and acid goes nicely with the nicely marbled steak.
I’ll probably switch off soon – mebbe, some rye, mebbe just some vodka. Red Sox v. Yankees always go long, so this is a marathon, not a sprint.

Yeah, “cellar temp” would be perfect but I don’t have a cellar. Cold is too cold so I try to let it rest before drinking. But room temp is just gross IMHO.

The wine in a “box” is in an air-tight bladder – it just shrinks as you dispense it, so air never gets to the wine – that means it keeps _much_ longer than it would otherwise.

It has been 20+ years since I lived in Memphis, but this stuns me. Memphis has always been bluer than blue. A lot of that has been because Memphis is a majority of African Americans. If black leaders are feeling like they can come out and work with the GOP, it is huge.

It will be interesting to see how the they work together in actual power with the former and have yet to see evidence of the latter. While I’m happy to see the PQ decimated, many of their votes simply migrated to the CAQ. And the hard left socialists in Quebec Solidaire did too well for my tastes. The CAQ’s victory though was horrible news for the Federal Liberals under that clown.
I’m ambivalent to the CAQ because the leader is a former PQ leader and clearly leans on the side of all that was typical with the PQ when it comes to culture. A pass for me. I really wanted to give the CAQ a chance but they’re too incoherent and don’t stand up for small business and free enterprise.

This is what is so fucking confusing about the term ‘millennial’. In some contexts it refers to people who graduated or turned 18 at the millennium, in other cases it’s a catch all for ‘damn kids these days!’.
The best paradigm I’ve seen was 19 years per generation.
Boomers – 1946-1964
Gen X – 1965-1983
Millennials – 1984 – 2002
New Kids (GenZ/whatever) – 2003 – 2021

I would limit it to acceptable dating age range. By your account someone born in 1984 is in the same generation as someone born in 2002. No way a 34 year old dating a 16 year old is acceptable.

My point is that if you define it this way, no matter what degree of ‘creepy’ you use as the line it will necessarily mean generations being undefined since the defining characteristic is one that changes as you age. 34 and 16 become 50 and 32, 60 and 42 etc. obviously the acceptability of the pairing changes as the younger person ages.
If I were demographic dictator for the day, I’d set it at 12 years. That way, barring a few outliers, you can’t have a child in the same generation as you.
Of course, that means that there are 6 or 7 generations between 1945 and now instead of 4 generations.
I’d put it at 10, that seems to correlate better with my experience and I have a love for the clean crispness of 10.

Gen X seems to have found the sweet spot between “She had it coming” and “I believe her”.
I just finished The Coddling of the American Mind, and they put the Millennial cutoff at 1995; the defining factor being that the next generation (that they refer to as iGen) grew up with smartphones and social media.
It’s almost like these are arbitrary labels designed by a pseudoscience only to perpetuate ideas..no that can’t be it.
I don’t know that they’re completely arbitrary, there’s just some grey area around the edges. Generations are certainly different, but they’re often defined by cultural trends or events rather than arbitrary timelines.
So for example, I would define “Boomers” as “people old enough to be drafted and sent to Vietnam (if they were male)”. GenX would be something like “teenagers when MTV played music videos”. And yeah, that leaves a gap between the two, some short nameless generation defined roughly as “teenagers at the birth of punk rock” or something, but assigning those people to either Boomers or GenX would be equally arbitrary.
I wouldn’t disagree that generations don’t exist; only that the pseudo science as it is now has no meaningful definitions..
Gen X is pretty defined, because we’re the “Baby Buster” generation. Demographically Gen X is a distinct dip in numbers – a lot of us were born of those who were children during WWII but into enough prosperity (and women in the workplace) meant delaying and having fewer kids. Millennial is hard to define because they’re generally the kids of the Boomers – that’s why they’re such a big balloon — but there’s no obvious point to draw the lines in the numbers.

My point is, and has been, my sister 3 years older than me and my brother 2 years older than me are very clearly defined as Gen-X, yet by some accounts I’m Gen-X, by others I’m millennial. My niece who was born when I was 16 is also considered a millennial, how the fuck does that work? What I’m getting at is these aren’t categories of any importance. There is no actual definition. It shouldn’t be considered a science, but yet it is treated as one.
I was just pointing out that it’s not totally out of thin air, because it’s a pretty obvious curve of LOTS oF PEOPLE -> not lots -> LOTS AGAIN. The dates are fuzzy because after WWII, there’s no one event to point to as the cause for the shift, it’s too gradual.
