SP and I are in a state of bliss- football is back! Even if we’re just stuck with seeing dogs like Philly-Cleveland or Detroit-Tampa Bay. When the regular season starts, we’ll have the full NFL package and our Sundays will be totally wasted in a most delightful manner.
The main disadvantage: we basically don’t watch actual television. We see old movies and binge-watch selected shows on Amazon and Netflix, but the idea of seeing something on NBC-CBS-CNN-whatever is repulsive to us. And seeing games on networks reminds us of why. The commercials promoting network shows really brought home to us the mathematical reality that half the population has a sub-100 IQ. And none more so than the endless promos last night for a show called God Friended Me. We just stared at each other in disbelief. There is not enough alcohol in this world that could make something like that tolerable. Maybe with enough head trauma… This explains who wins elections.
In any case, this will be a quieter season. SP yells at referees, especially when she’s been drinking (and how can you watch NFL games and not be drinking?). Her usual targets have been Ed Hochuli and Jeff Triplette, both of whom could get her into a rage-storm and both of whom are now retired. And that just leaves Jerome Boger, and nobody could yell at him. Damn, he ought to be the ref for every game and be the only one allowed to use the microphone to announce the penalties.
Ahem, this is supposed to be a links post, I just get distracted. Today in history, John Birch was killed by the commies, which gave rise to the eponymous Red-Scare organization. It’s delightful irony that this banner now is in the hands of Team Blue. It is also the birthday of Michael Rennie (the One True Klaatu), Sean Connery (the One and Only True James Bond), noted Jew musician Gene Simmons, and antisemitic piece of shit musician Elvis Costello (who also has the distinction of calling James Brown and Ray Charles “niggers”). Oh, and the Grand Mustache, Rollie Fingers, who I don’t think is an antisemite and never called Reggie Jackson a nigger.
On to actual links.
Not news, but an interesting link, 10 Libertarian Thoughts on the Civil War. The author makes the vital point that, without an explicit constitutional provision outlining the means of states exiting the union, a civil war was almost inevitable. But then we get into the knotty issues of, “What are the moral obligations of a society toward other societies where there is injustice?” “What are the economic drivers which might cause a subset of states to want to exit and form a different union?” “What is the moral balance between the liberty to exit a voluntary association and the motivation of continuing oppression of people within the exiting states?”
I hope you read this article and that it stimulates some discussion here. It’s a very nicely done piece.
We in Illinois have an interesting gubernatorial choice this year between a totally ineffective billionaire who will oversee massive tax increases and a totally corrupt billionaire who will oversee massive tax increases. Surely the Libertarian Party has a better alternative, right? Meet Team L’s candidate, “Kash” Jackson.
Jackson, who was previously named Benjamin Winderweedle before a legal name change in 2017… has said he is unemployed and living exclusively on disability and pension payments from serving in the Navy 20 years. He’s said in court he takes home about $4,500 a month from those benefits.
Great.
At that, I guess we’re still better off than Florida.
U.S. House candidate Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera has a long list of accomplishments to bolster her campaign in Florida. But she is perhaps best known for claiming that she was abducted by space aliens as a child… [L]ast weekend, the Miami Herald endorsed her for the GOP nomination in the Tuesday primary out of a field of nine candidates.
Rodriguez Aguilera says she was taken aboard a spaceship as a young girl by blond extraterrestrials who resembled the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. She says they told her that the “center of the world’s energy is Africa” and that thousands of non-human skulls were once discovered in a cave on the Mediterranean island of Malta.
“We realize that Rodriguez Aguilera is an unusual candidate,” the editorial noted, adding that the paper was impressed with her “boots-on-the-ground ideas and experience.”
We need more politicians like Bettina.
Apparently, the Zionazis control FIFA!
President of the Palestinian Football Association (PFA) Jibril Rajoub was fined CHF 20,000 ($20,333) and banned from matches for a year by FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee on Friday… In June, Rajoub called on Palestinian fans to burn pictures of Messi as well as replicas of his shirt should the world-famous striker choose to visit Israel. “We are going to target him personally and we call on all to burn his picture and his shirt and to abandon him,” Rajoub said at the time.
I don’t know why anyone cares. It’s soccer, not actual sports.
Speaking of football and Florida, they sure do know how to liven up a game down there.
A shooting at a high school football game in Jacksonville, Fla., on Friday night left one person dead and two injured, officials said. The shooting happened about 10 p.m. ET, 15 minutes after the game ended at Raines High School, where about 4,000 spectators attended, the Florida Times Union reported, citing Jacksonville authorities.
The stadium for the Raines-versus-Lee High School game was placed on lockdown as security personnel worked to keep the remaining fans and players safe, Jacksonville’s WJXT-TV reported.
Now maybe it’s just me, but it seems that trapping people inside is not exactly something that’s going to make them safer.
The superintendent said everyone coming into the game had to undergo a magnetic detector wand search and that security inside the game area was tight.
Well, that was certainly effective. And cue the predictable:
“This is evidence that there is a community issue that has to be addressed, and one of those issues includes access to guns,” Paula Wright, a school board member, told the paper.
Fuck you, Paula.
As a kid, I hated two things in the public school morning ritual: reciting the Lord’s Prayer (this was before Madalyn Murray’s court win) and the Pledge of Allegiance. So initially, this started out well.
An Atlanta charter school will not recite the Pledge of Allegiance as part of its morning meeting agenda. Atlanta Neighborhood Charter School on Grant Street announced the change Tuesday in a statement from elementary campus principal Lara Zelski.
Yay, Lara! Oh, wait, maybe not.
“Teachers and the K-5 leadership team will be working with students to create a school pledge that we can say together at morning meeting,” Zelski said. That pledge, “…will focus on students’ civic responsibility to their school family, community, country and our global society.”
Fuck you, Lara.
Old Guy Music! And keeping with Brett’s theme and my semi-traumatic visit to Detroit this past week, the one hit wonder pride of Motor City, the Amboy Dukes! As usual, The Nuge plays it close to the chest.
This “getting up at 6 AM every day” thing is working out pretty well for me. I’ve gotten to the point where I just wake up by myself at 5:50 or so. I’d recommend it to anyone who has trouble with oversleeping or repeatedly hitting snooze. I do miss the feeling of sleeping in, but it’s nice to be able to get out of bed on workdays without any kind of struggle. And remember, you can still take as many naps as you want as long as you get up at the same time.
Also: holy shit, am I first??
No, because you weren’t on topic.
Goddamn. Your lazy ass sleeps in until 5:50?
The day’s like a quarter of the way over by then. Lazy fuck urbanites.
I’m at work by 5:50 every morning.
Ugh, that would be a bridge too far.
Honestly, I think I’m a second shift creature by nature. I used to get up at 9:30 AM, and that was about perfect for me. This 6 AM shit is just because I’m on first shift… Gotta do what I gotta do to get to work on time.
Yeah, I never slept that much. It’ll probably drive me to an early grave or something, but my alarm clock is set for 4:30 to get me to work by six, and I’m usually up before the alarm clock. On weekends I wake up before six even though I stay up a bit later.
Dude, it’s Saturday
Huh. I went to bed about three hours before you woke up.
has said he is unemployed and living exclusively on disability and pension payments from serving in the Navy 20 years.
Ooh, another of our hero veterans.
The picture sure looks like he’s able to work at something. I have no problem with the pension and disability assuming it’s all on the level, but that is a big assumption. The unemployed (but apparently able) part is most disconcerting.
This is one of the biggest con-jobs that all servicemen and women know about (and many if not most get in on) and the flag waiving american public doesn’t want to hear about it. You can collect a diability payment as big as your pension check if you spend your last couple years of service complaining about various aches and pains and getting it documented in your medical file. there’s always the nebulous gold mine of PTSD if that doesn’t work. And there are absolutely no restrictions on working after like there is with regular diability. If the public really knew what they were paying for they’d be far less likely to run around thanking people for their service.
Oh I know the system is fucked and isn’t just. My dad was in the AF 66-70 and goes to the VA. He gets pushed around because he is a nobody and doesn’t claim the latest sympathy card. He’s just old and broken. I also don’t think he should get health care for life just because he worked on some planes in non-combat areas when he was 18-22. However, he never used the VA until he retired because he always had a good job with benefits.
A big milestone on my path to libertarianism was my roommate post-basic training. Dude started complaining about back pain (pre-existing condition that he hid to get in) and was discharged with 100% disability after less than 6 months of service. No work restrictions at all. Asshole gets E-3 pay and free healthcare until the day he dies.
That is a nut punch, but I’m sure not the most egregious example.
The conscription part helps me tolerate it. Many of the “volunteers” of the Vietnam era weren’t really volunteers. It was either volunteer or infantry…
Yeah, it’s one of the reasons I don’t make a big deal about a few things that happened when I was in uniform that have been cropping up as I get older. Yeah, the original injury happened while I was in uniform but those injuries are over 40 years old. At my age I have to expect a few issues cropping up anyway. I know people who have real issues from injuries that happened in the military and they deserve some help.
I know a guy who is 70% disabled from PTSD – but this is real. He is still functional however all but totally withdrawn. I’ve never seen him laugh or even smile. Luckily for him he is exceptionally gifted in a rather rare skill and his total lack of people skills don’t affect application of that skill.
Well said. I work with a lot of old (soon to be crusty) former servicemen from all branches. We are disgusted by the PTSD scamming and disability abuse that we see. It’s criminal that these bastards are outright stealing from us tax cattle. Meanwhile, those that are truly disabled and maimed seem to need help from various charities. That’s some bullshit. The scammers need to get cutoff, and the money given to veterans that earned it. It often comes up as a topic of discussion in my home because my POS SIL is one the PTSD scammers.
You can’t really discuss it out in the open because you automatically get tagged as unpatriotic and anti-military. My wife (ex-AF) and I cringe when someone thanks us for our service. I often respond with, “It used to be a great place to start.”
Well, not quite. If one is retired from the military AND service connected disability the disability cash is with held from the retirement pay. The big difference is that the disability is tax free. For example, I am 10 % disabled, I lose $134 a month on my retirement but get a separate check for that amount tax free.
Now the question may well be how does my “disability” affect my lifestyle, you can make that argument, at least in my case.
In about 1975 there was serious discussion to modify the retirement requirements. It was a political football that never moved.I sat through a briefing by Gen George Patton II explaining the program. I knew it wouldn’t get off the ground because of the Pentagon special interests.
In today’s political atmosphere where every basic trainee is a “hero” there is no motivation to make any serious changes, unfortunately. I am very uncomfortable when I get thanked for my service, since even in VN I hardly left the shadow of the PX.
Another part of the scam is that in my early days we didn’t make a lot of money. As a pvt I was getting $78 a month and didn’t pay any FICA (SS tax). When it came time to get SS the SS Admin computed those early years at a different level, plus pretended that we actually had paid in.
The changes will only come when the US Gov goes Chapter 11. The problem, however, is not with the GIs. Politicians make the laws. I’m not disagreeing, only explaining.
U.S. House candidate Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera has a long list of accomplishments to bolster her campaign in Florida. But she is perhaps best known for claiming that she was abducted by space aliens as a child…
Didn’t Jimmy Carter claim to have seen a UFO?
Actually I…uh…I dont like to admit it but…I saw a UFO when I was about ten years old. I thought it was bullshit then, I think it is bullshit now but I saw what I saw.
Unidentified flying object. Yes, you saw one. No, it probably wasn’t a spacecraft.
I have no idea what it was, thus, unidentified. And it wasn’t flying.
STEVE SMITH UNCLE! Lucky you got away!
SPACE SMITH of SPACE FORCE fame!
Now maybe it’s just me, but it seems that trapping people inside is not exactly something that’s going to make them safer.
+1 Hillsborough
But the police did nothing wrong!
Once in the early ’70s my father was talking politics and I asked him “Why cant we get someone good?” to which he answered “Like who? No one in their right mind wants the job.”
Nice links, Old Man. Good format. Amusing commentary. ?
I got no time for links, though. I got to hit the road. 12 miles of running before I’m done.
Morning y’all!
The Nuge with Amboy Dukes and Kenny Rogers with First Edition were both aha moments in the formation of my musical tastes. What? People aren’t just ‘country’ or ‘rock’ from the time they’re born?
In the late 50’s there was a group called “The Arizona Trailblazers”, alas ,they were from Perth Amboy.
“Pictured: Mom and daughter, 12, killed in fiery wreck after famous YouTube gamer, 18, drove his $500k McLaren the wrong way down the freeway at 100mph and plowed into them to ‘commit suicide’
Police have identified the driver who killed himself and left a mother and daughter dead in a 100mph car crash as teenage Youtube gaming star Trevor Heitmann.
The 18-year-old sped down I-805 HOV at 4.30pm on Thursday driving in the wrong direction and collided into a Hyundai SUV, resulting in the fiery crash.
The mother has been identified as Aileen Pizarro, 43, and her daughter as Aryana Pizarro, 12, by her son according to the San Diego Union Tribune.”
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6096691/YouTube-gamer-car-crash-victims-pictured-18-year-old-driver-sped-100mph-wrong-direction.html
Christ, what an asshole.
Imagine the language if it were a cop driving the McLaren.
Saw that on the news this morning. Fucking horrible.
Burn in hell trevor.
Kill yourself if you want to, but leave everyone else out of it
If only guns were more readily available so this asshole could have just killed himself in private.
Friend from high school was killed in a similar way. On his way to work and a couple in the car in the opposite lane was having a fight. Asshole decided to show his wife who was boss and steered right into him.
SP might think this, but my own bet is that she’ll have an aneurysm by year’s end with the rule changes and the fact that the NFL managed to replace the above mentioned referees with individuals who inexplicably worse.
I guarantee several major controversies related to the new kickoffs alone. The helmet rule is going to be a weekly shit show.
Motown meets… Frank DeVol?!
Great song, and the movie is a lot of fun too. Much better than the M. Night Shyamalan shit.
I guess she wanted to “get home safely”
Soo… the guy sitting next to him is…useless I guess. What is he doing? Why doesn’t the cop give him instructions? Very confusing.
Just spitballing here: Could it be possible the cop wanted no record of his attempt to beat the hell
out of the “suspect”?
I suppose. There were numerous phones recording it, though he may have seen only her.
And I’m not so sure cop dude could beat hell out of perp dude.
Head of the cop union got her fired from her job.
Democratic Split on Impeachment Talk: Officials Avoid It, but Voters Are Eager for It. TW: NYT. Dems that aren’t completely insane aren’t bringing up the idea of impeachment, since they’d like to actual win their elections. Crazy proggy voters whine that they should move for immediate impeachment. (over what exactly besides “I don’t like Drumpf”, I can’t tell)
If the Dems do get control, impeachment will happen. Impeachment is a political process. And Mueller along with the media have given them the pretext, no matter how flimsy.
It’ll be interesting to see the Republican response.
I still hold that there are only two actions that have the potential of starting a civil war here. 1) massive draconian gun confiscation and 2) Trump being dragged out of office on bullshit pretenses.
Old Guy Music, ugh. Maybe stick to Jazz and obscure folk artists. That song is top ten overplayed shite material, and I’m a Nuge fan, seen him like four times. Not as bad as that Hair metal shit a few guys were pimping in last nights links, but I expect better, or at least novel, songs weekend mornings.
What kind of jazz do you like? I know a lot of people here like Miles Davis and stuff (and that’s cool) but I’m into the pre-WWII kind of jazz – Fletcher Henderson, Original Dixieland Jazz Band, Benson Orchestra of Chicago, etc.
Of course, I also like pre-jazz popular music from 1890s to late 1910s, and I think the number of people who enjoy that music is probably in the single digits.
For you.
And then watch the James Cagney movie Strawberry Blonde. One of his personal favorites.
Sweet clip! I collect 78rpm records, and I want to get into wax cylinders, but a cylinder player in working order is $600+.
For you
Wow.
My uncle collected old record players, and we’ve got one cylinder player that may or may not be in working order and a 1920s victrola-type 78 player. He also had a ton of stereoscope cards that I have no idea what happened to.
What kind of jazz do you like? I know a lot of people here like Miles Davis
pretty much that, Mingus, Monk, Marsalis etc. But as I get older I find myself listening to anything if it’s done well, I’ll check out those guys you mention.
Art Blakey ftw.
And of course, Vic Fontaine, but that one is obvious, pally.
People hated when I posted jazz-phase Joni Mitchell. They hated Zappa. They hated Beefheart. They ignored Rahsaan.
Y’all are just haters.
Yes we are
Now that’s just mean.
The sentiment of the lyrics, or the song itself?
Yes.
I’m not saying you have to play stuff we’re likely to enjoy, I like the variety. Even is it Zappa or Tull or someone I’m familiar with you don’t play the expected songs. JTTCOTM is just a lazy ass choice is all I’m saying.
Does this count as an expected song?
“Ya’ll are just haters.”
Uh, a collection of libertarians who like to post on internet forums….
Haters….
Uh,
Ssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhocking!
Yep, truly shocking.
I swear, if I become a multi-multi-millionaire, I’m gonna change my first name to Misanthrope.
I like most music because music is pretty cool.
“Trump’s ex-doorman reveals $30k contract he signed with the National Enquirer barring him from speaking to anyone else about his claims the President had an illegitimate child with a housekeeper – that the magazine then never published”
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6096857/Donald-Trumps-former-doorman-releases-document-details-illegitimate-child.html
This shit is getting ridiculous.
Trump is basically a classier Bill Clinton.
His wives are all a hell of a lot classier than Hillary.
Didn’t Ah-nold knock up a housekeeper, too?
Google says yes, and he is somewhat involved in the child’s life. helpful synopsis of the phenomenon here
What the fuck do people think a non-disclosure agreement means?
Evidently it means free money with no strings attached.
I think it means “if George Soros (by proxy) promises me more money and is picking up the legal bills, hey, have at it.”
We’re way beyond ridiculous. It’s all background noise to me, sorta like Charlie Brown’s teacher. I don’t give a fuck about any of it. The more they scream about Trump, the more I support him.
I just picture this every time I hear someone ranting about Trump’s latest atrocity:
https://imgur.com/a/my3XaaN
Yeah I decided to get off my ass and register to vote because of this. I moved recently and won’t be around in November so I need an absentee ballot. Normally I wouldn’t waste my time but the crazy train lately motivated me.
Trump promised that he would make America Grate again.

Law enforcement officials think this crime and others in the area are a result of the rise in methamphetamine use.
Gotta push the drug “epidemic” narrative….
Federal dollars for the drug war is probably one of Kentucky’s top sources of income after Bourbon which is kind of ironic.
But they are out of date with their ‘crisis’. It is heroin now. Or fentanyl.
Nobody cares about meth…
Dairy push us to new heights?
Or will they just milk the topic?

This shit is getting ridiculous.
She’s got issues for sure.
That b is crazy. Kee-ray-zee.
I’m torn on the VA benefits. On one hand, I understand why we have them, on the other hand, I’m beginning to feel like it’s creating a different ‘class’ of citizens. The benefits are pretty extensive and don’t have a term attached to them.
The article doesn’t mention how much disability he’s rated for.
It also doesn’t mention his rank in navy.
See my comment above. I have no problem giving an amputee disability for life. The problem is what plagues all government welfare programs, freeloaders and malingerers figure out how to work the system and the VA is all to happy to accommodate them in their quest for bigger budgets. Basically those without principles can easily get on the doll for life when they are discharged regardless of their lack of combat or diagnosable ailment. Fucked up incentives, who knew?
*Dole, Lord I hate glibing from my phone.
Yeah. People like Bob Dole. Dude lost use of his hand. Had to carry around a pen everywhere he went so he didn’t look like such a freak. Didn’t stop him from getting up and going to… well, not work exactly. But, you know, he was at least doing something …. well, not exactly productive, but…
You know what… .let’s just drop this example. Still, dude didn’t whine about stuff.
TW: HuffPo. Trump Congratulating ICE And Border Patrol Officers Is An Insult To All Americans.
Oh! These are the American people’s opinions are they? It’s just uniformly “abolish ICE and the border patrol and open the borders up to everyone” is it? There are totally no Americans that have no problem with ICE and the border patrol.
MICROAGGRESSION!
I mean, getting rid of ICE was so popular that most Dems refused to even vote on the matter…
There were some quiet harumpfs
It’s embarrassing and insulting that the American people’s opinions on the matter are being ridiculed ― and at a White House event, no less.
Obama having his hissy fit in the Rose Garden about gun control was totes OK, however.
Crap, I Brooksed the reply!
At least you didn’t Gilmore a link.
THAT’S DIFFERENT! Obama is wise and intelligent and knew better than the rest of us what should be done. DRUMPF is a buffoon and fool!
And here I thought he was just clean and articulate.
B-b-but he cried! Don’t you know that tears are the currency of Progland?
So to get them to pay their “fair” share of taxes, we should beat them regularly?
“‘Tinder Trap’ model claims she’s the victim after duping guys
The model who duped hundreds of dudes into showing up for a phony Tinder date in Union Square refused to apologize Thursday — and painted herself as the victim.
“I’m taking all the hits right now,” Instagram model and actress Natasha Aponte whined on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”
Aponte made headlines this week after inviting dozens of dudes to the park on Sunday, only to blindside them by revealing they were all there for the same date and would have to compete — turning most away for arbitrary reasons like having a beard or being named “Jimmy” and putting the rest through physical challenges.
The brunette finally explained what it was all about Thursday as she and “viral video” marketer Rob Bliss released their footage of the ruse — saying it was a “social experiment” to highlight the problem with online dating.”
https://nypost.com/2018/08/23/tinder-trap-model-claims-shes-the-victim-after-duping-guys/
When that said Tinder Trap dupes guys, I was thinking this was going to be a tranny that got attacked by the guys that met up only to find out she wasn’t actually a she. But, either way what a bitch.
In the mold of Lincoln, my brand of punishment would be a public gang bang for all involved.
“social experiment” to highlight the problem with online dating
You know who else conducted social experiments and then claimed to be the victim?
I think this is hilarious. Guys are dumb.
On call this week…I have been up since 4 AM.
What am I actually doing? I am the go between between vendor support teams and in-house support teams. Apparently I am a people person.
“I take the vendor calls and give them to our in-house people!”
Exactly the reference I was going for.
I have a 6 year old. I was up at 2:30. And again at 4:15. And then last night’s beer and salsa (with chips, not as an addition to the beer) caught up with me around 5:30. so today is going to be a long, long, long day. I am hosting the Sister in Law for her 50th birthday at a pub up in Jupiter. So 3:00 sounds about right for hitting the pillow tonight.
But i’m not complaining. Not because I don’t complain. Rather, because complaining that your daughter kept waking you up and then you got the runs is just plain weird. So I ain’t doin’ it.
That’s a shitty deal.
Aren’t you a brewmaster or something?

I’m constantly amazed at the rapidity with which some of you can find and link a YT video.
Not that difficult. I have Rorschach thoughts, and just open another tab to see if the relevant song is on YT (it almost always is since my selections aren’t too obscure). And I’m a good typist.
I guess you aren’t that amazing then! 😉
Well, I am amazing, but my YT skills aren’t the reason why.
It’s the hat that allows you to maintain your…porcelain skin…isn’t it?
And if the songs put a terrible earworm in your ear, so much the better.
Here’s an earworm for you!
And people think I’m bad!
I always wanted to see a “Cars Against Kids” charity.
*giggles like a schoolboy* Gotcha!
That blasted jingle is on multiple times a day here. It never goes away!
Who could watch that and not support abortion?
Great. I didn’t even click but still figured out the jingle which is now in my head. This is why I hate people.
To the mines for the lot of ’em.
/Mr. Creosote voice.
I’ve seen that soooooo many times it’s actually gone from “fingernails on a chalkboard” to “inoffensive background noise”. I didn’t think that was possible, given how truly wretched it is.
See your link and raise you.
Did I hear correctly that that category 70 hurricane that was going to kill everybody in Hawaii because climate change sputtered out to a tropical storm without doing much damage?
It rained a lot. That has never happened before, therefore global warming.
The Big Island is getting lots of rain. Oahu was just overcast and kinda normal high end winds yesterday and the 8-12 inches of rain never happened. Today is a bit above normal wind and we better get enough rain for my garden and pool or I will be disappointed in Lane.
It is still possible Ted that Lane disturbed the Aloha Godzilla and we’ll get a mutant monster bent on destroying Waikiki.
Do we have some sort of moral duty to invade Venezuela? No.
So how would the newly formed independent CSA be any different?
If you acknowledge a right to secede and a general policy of not getting involved in internal issues of foreign nations, then the civil war can’t be supported at all.
Honestly, if you removed the issue of slavery from the subject entirely, and it was just a war to keep the South tethered to the North and assuming the same results, I think most modern American intellectuals would still support that hypothetical civil war scenario, and in turn most American citizens would go along. And I think that’s the crux of the issue.
Most of the assholes who hand wave away everything Lincoln did will tell you how wise Wilson was for sending Americans off to fight in WW1. And how great FDR is…
And a century of propaganda along that lines means most people just go along with it. And then you get a situation like Iraq where its way too easy for progressives and neocons to come together and rally the people behind it. I mean, if the NJ and NYT’s agree, how can it be wrong!?
Of course, but too many supposed libertarians fall into the same trap.
If you acknowledge a right to secede and a general policy of not getting involved in internal issues of foreign nations, then the civil war can’t be supported at all.
The former is not generally accepted as a “right.” Certainly not by Lincoln and his successors. I don’t see that 9A and 10A grant that right. Now, one can argue, as does the author (and me, for that matter), that perhaps this is something that should have been spelled out in the constitution one way or the other.
The latter has sadly been abandoned for, oh, about 200 years. Even the Monroe Doctrine says, hey, it’s jake as long as it’s in the Western Hemisphere. Too bad, that’s why we’re being taxed to support paying for our armed forces in 23 countries during a time of no actual war.
It’s the opening fucking sentence of the Declaration of Independence.
Our entire country is based on the right to secession as a natural right granted by “Nature’s God”.
The Declaration of Independence is not the constitution.
Rights aren’t granted by the constitution.
Or the DoI, but it is the defining document of our country.
You know the country exited for ~20 years without the constitution? And the rights still existed then too. Not to mention constitutions come and go, the current one ain’t our first, and may not be our last.
The constitution is about the governing of the country. The country exists because of the DoI (and the war that accompanied it). It is superior to the constitution in that way.
Math is hard. 12 is sorta like 20.
Individual rights are not granted by the constitution indeed- if one actually reads it (which apparently judges don’t), it only calls out what the rights of the State are. But the right of an individual State to withdraw from the union isn’t mentioned, and that’s one major reason why a war was inevitable.
I am not entirely sure that there is a single judge sitting on the US Supreme Court who fully agrees with this thesis.
They mostly seem to come to this conclusion when there is something about the law that they don’t like. Then they are all-in on some nebulous pre-existing rights – like a right to have the state pay for your abortion, just to be obnoxious about it.
But even Thomas is a bit wobbly on the notion that federal power is limited to only those powers specifically enumerated in the constitution.
If any of them could actually read the constitution, they’d quickly come to the conclusion that our government as it exists is almost entirely beyond the scope of its mandate. One might speculate that they have actually come to this conclusion, decided that the implications of this conclusion are unworkable and therefore simply ignore the entire line of reasoning.
I am not entirely sure that there is a single judge sitting on the US Supreme Court who fully agrees with this thesis.
Indeed, and that’s a huge problem. Worse yet, given the way judges are appointed to that position, there’s no chance that one with a true constitutional outlook would ever get nominated, much less approved.
So you have guys like Thomas, who are excellent on 1A and horrible on 4A and 5A, or Sotomayor who is excellent on 4A and 5A and terrible on 1A and 2A, and ALL of them are horrible on 9A and 10A.
On the 9th and 10th it is almost as if they are automata from HBO’s Westworld.
The robots in that show are so lifelike that even they do not know that they are robots. But they are programmed to not be able to see certain things. So they look at a door and say “what door”.
That’s your supreme court. “What enumerated powers clause?”
I loathe nearly this entire paragraph.
1. The “union” has no rights. It has, at most, powers vested in it by the people it represents.
2. It’s embarrassing! Think of the implications! No one will invite me to a cocktail party if I argue this!
3. The notion that countries have the right to invade territories because something bad is happening there is a rabbit hole this author hasn’t much considered, and in this case it’s easy for the author to wave away the ethical issues because alls well that ends swell. It’s commonly accepted that the Civil War was a righteous cause. The opposite position is just ludicrous.
#3 is basically an argument for endless interventions across the globe. Especially when we consider the historical reality that the North didn’t get violent and decide to fight to end slavery, but to keep the South bound to the North. The neocons in this day and age are no shit interventionists who think that they’re serving a greater good. Their international busy bodies. The ends (democracy and freedom for brown peoples) justify the means (killing lots of brown people). That wasn’t the reason the North started fighting or endured such losses.
There’s also the fact that just because the Constitution is silent on an issue, doesn’t mean something is illegal. And the argument that Lincoln “solved” the issue of secession because he showed that you’d get burned and pillaged for doing it is ludicrous on its face. In fact, if we start going down that rabbit hole, it’s hard to argue that Lincoln wasn’t a tyrant. And I don’t even think Lincoln was a tyrant.
The people who make these arguments about the Civil War would never actually try to apply them today. I mean, if there’s a moral obligation to force people to go fight to end slavery in the South, why the fuck aren’t we invading various African shitholes tomorrow? It all boils down to a case of special pleading aided by the fact that attacking the end result (a unified America that kicks ass) is blasphemous.
If California wants to secede tomorrow, is Trump justified in invading? I mean, fuck, within a month the tax rates would be so high that you are effectively talking about slavery, anyway. I’d be willing to bet that plenty of slave owners in the South let their slaves keep more of what they earned than a free California would.
There’s also the fact that just because the Constitution is silent on an issue, doesn’t mean something is illegal.
It’s not silent. Read the 9A and 10A.
I think what you are implying is that if the constitution is silent on an issue, it is explicitly not illegal. As in, unless the constitution grants a specific power to the government, the government cannot write laws regulating that area of our lives.
So if the constitution is silent on the federal government having the power to outlaw alcohol, they need a constitutional amendment before they can ban alcohol.
This fact carries dangerous consequences if applied. That is why you will never see this repeated on the evening news, never hear much about it in debates over legislation and won’t even hear it when listening to supreme court arguments (where presumably this would be the primary thing you’d hear about).
“Conor Daly loses Lilly Diabetes sponsorship over remark his father made over 30 years ago
ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (AP) — Lilly Diabetes has pulled its sponsorship of Conor Daly’s No. 6 car in the NASCAR Xfinity race at Road America, citing a racially insensitive remark made by the driver’s father in the 1980s that surfaced this week.
In a statement, Daly said he admitted to using a racial slur for African-Americans during a radio interview in the early 1980s. Daly, who had just moved to the United States then, said the term had a different meaning and connotation in his native Ireland.
Daly said he was “mortified’” when he learned how the term was used in the United States and has never used it since then. Conor Daly, 26, wasn’t born when his father made the comment.”

This shit is getting ridiculous.
We’re firmly into religious territory here.
The cynic in me tells me that they wanted to sever ties, anyway, and that they went digging for an excuse. The more realistic side of me, the one that thinks that most people are just retarded, thinks that this is legit.
Yeah, I don’t really see how a sponsor needs an excuse to sever ties.
You don’t even have to go through the Czechoslovakian ritual of saying “I break with thee, i break with thee, I break with thee” and throwing dog poop on their shoes.
Will we get to grandfathers?
Unreal…
Every time I think we have reached the pinnacle of Orewellian chill…
Meh, affirmative action is already blood libel from our great grandfathers. We’ve been condoning the practice for a while. We live in medieval times with heretics and excommunication.

10 Libertarian Thoughts on the Civil War

Letters to the Local Rag: Maybe You Should Have Studied Something Other Than Basket Weaving
WTF!!!!!
While he is very conservative on this point, Dave Ramsey recommends 25% (And while it is an extreme position, if more people did that, people would be much better off over all) And anything over 40% is veering into the “house poor” regime. 80% is unworkable.
I have always used 3 years gross income when pricing houses. Which works out to about 30% of the net monthly on mortgage, taxes, and insurance. Bonus is that as long as your salary rises faster than taxes and insurance, it will be a shrinking portion of your budget with a fixed loan.
Net or gross income? What’s included in housing costs? I’m curious, because fully loaded, my housing costs are probably 50% of my take-home.
I think Dave Ramsey says 25% of net. It’s left to interpretation whether that means take-home or just gross minus taxes.
I should’ve kept reading. Housing costs would be mortgage, insurance, and taxes only.
My PMI is probably 30% of my aftertax income. It’s my only debt ,so it’s not a strain at all.
Someone didn’t read Hazlitt’s book.
Judging from the appalling level of economic ignorance in the world, I think a lot of people didn’t read Hazlitt’s book.
That book is definitely on my list of “Books I Would Like To Force The World To Read (But I Can’t Because I’m A Libertarian”.
I mean, in general you just have to be non-threateningly incompetent and not a lazy shit bag. It wasn’t the studying basket weaving that did this person in.
And the 80% on housing is just bullshit.
The problem comes when your housing costs plus transportation is more than your income.
Unless you’re printing money, it’s always a problem when expenses exceed income. Either cut costs or increase income.
Envy is an ugly emotion – perhaps he should find a Communist or Commie-lite country more suitable to his lack of ambition?
Effort =/= value.
Yup. Don’t even correlate.
In fact, skill doesn’t always enter into it either. Ask anyone who has a B.S. or even a Masters in Biology. That’s worth about the same as a 6 week training course at a technical college in the medical field.
At the same time a stripper can make a very tidy sum without even having any skills or training, just a few natural attributes that aren’t even all that uncommon. Add in some skill and experience and you’ve got a really nice income…. for a few years anyway.
The only thing that really counts is being able to spot an opportunity and exploit it. The guy I used to work for was a billionaire off of his eye for new opportunities that have high margins and low competition. He’s only done it a few times, but he’s got a few billion to show for it. He doesn’t even do all that well on the “execute” part… other people handle that part. He just tells them where he wants the ship to go. It is an extremely valuable skill… one that has taken him from being a realtor in New Jersey to a financial magnate living in the tax haven of the Bahamas with more money than even he can spend.
The lady who invented “gibbets”, the little button things that go in your Crocs shoes made a couple of million the first year. All she did was have some little plastic figures made onto buttons that fit in the shoes. Who knows how much she has now…. and it doesn’t sound all that hard. But I didn’t think of it. In fact, I wouldn’t have ever thought of it… because I think they are the ugliest shoes ever and couldn’t fathom spending money decorating them.
This is why the free market works better. You get to buy the stuff you want… not something that “TOP MEN” decided you needed.

Another Shitlord Alert
I see these guys regularly at industry trade shows. Their entire booth is adorned with quotes from the negative emails, tweets and letters they get for their ‘inappropriate’ name. It’s hilarious!
Haha yep… We had one of those fans in the factory where I used to work.
Shoulda gone for Hugh Jass fans.
Tell them Rufus gives them a big thumbs up!
Their ass?
He’s a muppet; he thinks that’s normal.
Occasionally, I check the price on Haiku model. Then I sigh, and click away.
Yeah… those are amazing…. and, ouch.
I was somewhere that had their fans this summer. I think it was at the US National Whitewater Center in Charlotte. Not sure…. we went a lot of places on that trip and they all muddled together. But I do remember noticing the huge fans and noticing how good they were. They are very cool fans.
*Clicks link.*
/Oh yeah, these guys. Great fans. Oh, they make lights now?
*Clicks buy now link*
$400 for a fucking light fixture!? That’s far more offensive to me than their name.
Honestly, if you removed the issue of slavery from the subject entirely, and it was just a war to keep the South tethered to the North and assuming the same results, I think most modern American intellectuals would still support that hypothetical civil war scenario
“Balkanization” is an epithet. You’re talking about the people who practically wept when the Brexit votes were counted.
Bigger, more centralized government is their religion.
I had multiple American FB “friends” post pictures of themselves in tears after the Brexit vote.
Da frick do they care?
Do they see the EU as some kind embodiment of perfection and glory or something?
Of course they do… It’s a supra-national organization that gets to impose rules on citizens while those same citizens have little to no input on the decisions that get made.
It’s a vehicle for more regulation, therefore they love it.
Damn – I was happy as hell after the Brexit vote. And damn Theresa May to hell for trying to thwart it at every turn.

Great movie and scene.
it’s still an issue that we have to work out between ourselves
Uh-huh.
“Shut up and agree with me,” he explained.
But, more importantly: we sell those items because we like them. You, of course, do not have to like or purchase those items.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. That’s not how it works. Where do you think you are? Somalia?
I really wish more people would take this approach.
We are about to reach a tipping point with the “divest from my enemies” movement. Now that keystone industries like banking are caving to these pressures, it will become increasingly difficult to oppose the mob.
I’m not sure what happened to my country. When I was growing up, the most important values were being honest, honoring your word, respecting other people and their property and minding your own business. If Tom and Jim were “confirmed bachelors” who lived as roommates for the last 20 years… then they were confirmed bachelors. None of your damn business. The same goes for the crackpot family who homeschooled their kids and sewed their own clothes because Jesus. None of your business.
Now everything is apparently my business. Either you think the right way, or I’m supposed to excommunicate you from society. There was a time when Orwell was a warning, not a roadmap.

By the way, Argentina cancelled their friendly with Israel because of pressure.
Unfrickenreal.
It is un-fricken-real… because exactly how big is the Palestinian lobby in Argentina? They can’t have that big of an islamic population, can they?
And it is fricken Argentina. They are almost Australia macho down there, aren’t they?
The match was supposed to be played in Israel.

I’m soliciting ideas here.
The latest stupidity coming out of Quebec daycare is I have to join this ridiculous website/group:
https://www.laplace0-5.com
It’s a scam to steal money as far as I’m concerned because not only do they force me to join they fucken charge me. $156 for a service I DO NOT NEED.
Mafia by other means.
So I’m thinking of a couple of things and I welcome ideas here. I want to send them 10 cheques of $15 but I don’t really want to waste that many on them but maybe I’ll do six or something. The other is on the memo line I want to write something. When Hydro Quebec confiscated $1500 from businesses as ‘holding money in case’ without any justification (in my case) I would wrote ‘GFY’ on the memo. In this case, I’m thinking something along the lines of ‘File under: Protection services.
If the private sector did that the CBC would be right on the case.
Immigrate? Only half unserious. I like how even selecting English, some of the news links remain in French. Telling.

Oh, sorry, yeah that would piss me off royally too!
Not valid?
So, apparently, ESPN has some shitty new morning show with Mike Greenberg in which they tried to pair him with Michelle Beadle. They paid Beadle $5 million a year to take this role even though no one I know gives a fuck about Michelle Beadle. This is a morning sports talk show, and she didn’t watch the NFL last year. And then recently promised to boycott college football as well as the NFL. ESPN responded by extending her deal and letting her cover the NBA.
I’m reminded that this is the same ESPN that cut a lot of its ‘talent’ recently. The relative little people who cover various sports as professionals, but who aren’t woke and who don’t refuse to watch the top sport in the country because of social justice. This same network basically lets Jemelle Hill do whatever she wants. They don’t have the balls to fire her. And Hill probably has more fans than Beadle.
But then there’s Mike Greenberg who reportedly makes $6.5 million a year. And I’m left pondering who in their right fucking mind actually likes Greenberg? I mean, you pair him with a meathead like Golic and bored commuters who want to hear bland sports opinions might tune in. They’re not really fans. Like these weren’t the people who listened to Howard Stern in the ’90s. You put him on a camera, and no one is making a point to tune in.
The people who make these decisions make even more money.
They fire people for saying nigger 35 years ago, his son who has nothing to do with it loses sponsorships BUT the NYT hires a ranting, raving, lunatic in Jeong.
Sounds legit this equality and diversity shit.
Ms. Hill has pretty much left ESPN if not completely. Her show did not have the ratings ESPN was looking for plus she stuck her foot in her mouth again after being told not to.
It has to be a pretty tough balance…. they want you to be provocative and say click-bait style things… but no so much that you drive away people. It sounds easy, but really must be tough. Stephen A. Smith is really good at it. Guys like Cowherd are also good at it. They are mostly assholes and they often sound like morons, but they have to be pretty damn sharp to come up with a dozen takes per day that are provocative (but not too provocative).
Part of the skillset seems to be groupthink. Once a take gets “legs”, they all grab the same take.
Like the Urban Meyer thing. I can’t for the life of me figure out what everyone is talking about, but local, national, TV, radio, cable…. they all agree. He is terrible and what he did is awful and The Ohio State is terrible for not doing more to punish him. I didn’t here a single dissenting voice on this one. I didn’t specifically go looking, but it was all they were talking about every time I flipped past a channel on TV or the radio for a couple of days.
Since there is absolutely no way that everyone actually shares this opinion, I assumed that I was getting a glimpse at how the sausage is made. Very few of these guys are “opinion makers”, Mostly they just follow the mob. Opinion making is dangerous. So they leave that to Smith and the other big name pundits. Then they take the successful version and run with it.
Someone give me a good pick up line. These 20 something’s next to me at the bar are hot.

Replace the last sentence with “Wanna fuck?”
I have seen this strategy in action. Many years ago we went to the Women’s ACC basketball tournament in Fayettville, NC. A bunch of us (including the cheerleaders) went to a local nightclub. There was some guy there who kept going up to the girls and whispering in their ear. They’d react kinda shocked and he’d move on.
One of the cheerleaders came over to us and we asked what was up with that. She said he walked up to her, leaned in and said, “Hey… ya fuckin’?”
We watched him make the rounds, going up to each woman.
Later that night my buddy grabbed my arm and started gesticulating toward the door…”Look! Look!”
Sure enough, he was leaving with a girl.
That lame shit worked. It’s just a numbers game. Ask enough times and you’ll eventually get a hit, I guess.

The one thing that occasionally gets me to visit Reason is the occasional headline that catches my eye on social media. This morning, I saw this one that used the term “positive liberty.” The argument put forward by Doherty is somewhat libertarian, but the entire thing rubbed me the wrong way from the start because it frames it in the terms of progressives. Public healthcare isn’t “positive” liberty. Neither is education, no matter how widely accepted.
It the ended with this appeal:
The entire thing is an attempt to get libertarians on the same page with progressives. Sort of like conservatives, if only we could start using more of the same terminology, we can find common ground (and then get run over) by the progs. Abandon your principles and accept compromise (by which we mean doing exactly what the left wants, being useful idiots).
But…but…but…don’t you want to win the game?
No. I just want people to leave me alone.
By far most libertarians do not refer to themselves as such and by far most people who do are absofuckinlutely not.
Why don’t you just rip your own guts out, spread them on the table, and declare it a victory while you’re at it?
Posting for general hilarity:
“[Hampton & Richmond Borough F.C.] is nicknamed the Beavers and there is some debate as to its origins. The ground is known as Beveree – after the nearby house from whose grounds it was originally part of – and it lies adjacent to Beaver Close, which would seem to suggest as to where the tag originates although Beaver Close was built after the ground.
Following the renaming of the club from Hampton to Hampton & Richmond Borough, occasionally ‘come on the Borough’ is heard but generally, the fans prefer ‘Beavers’ to anything else, which is reflected in the naming of the club’s youth group as the ‘Hampton Beavers’ and the supporters sometimes referring to themselves self-deprecatingly as the ‘Beaver Patrol’. An alternative and somewhat humorous chant often heard emanating from the crowds behind the home goal is ‘Up the Beavers’.”
You’re trolling us, right? His voice is annoying as hell and he often has trouble enunciating such difficult words as “offsides” and “and.”
He cracks me up every time he speaks and gestures. He’s totally straight, but if I were to have to teach a gay guy how to be a stereotype, I’d show him game film of Boger.

I’m not really current on some of the VA scandal stuff for vets – since with Mattis now the big deal is they will kick you out of the Reserves, etc if you can’t prove you’re 100% deployable. I do know from working with a lot of retirees that a lot of stuff does take longer to show itself, and depending on your line of work it can be a real pain to show it’s service related or not service related – hence the issues with Agent Orange, Burn Pits, etc – although I’m sure Mexican Sharpshooter has more info on those.
Hearing loss is a major factor and while mine has been good so far – I’m not sure how much it’ll deteriorate in the future – just being on a ship full time is nuts – whether you’re in engineering, around the weapons or when they start pinging active sonar. There are plenty of programs in place and the ships I was on – it was a big deal, but that stuff builds up over time.
And then you’ve got shit like this: https://www.navytimes.com/news/your-military/2018/07/26/company-to-pay-9-million-after-allegedly-selling-defective-combat-earplugs-to-us-military/
Additionally…if it didn’t take essentially an Act of God to modify your disability 10-30 years after retirement if/when a legit health issue emerged, I expect there’d be vastly fewer “able-bodied” folks currently claiming disability. The current system is basically what the military coaches you through doing when you separate because they’re aware of how broken the system actually is.

I am no constitutional scholar and am just a dumb hillbilly, but I imagine it could be argued an exit was left out intentionally because the framers saw keeping the union together to be of highest importance. (it would be interesting to know if this came up in the federalist papers) They did address a strategy to reel in the fed gov so succession would not be necessary because I imagine after what they had been through, they knew it would eventually get out of control, and it has. It is Article V. Granted 2/3 of the states are not going to agree to anything dipshit CA would propose as amendments which would be a laundry list of freebies, but one might imagine 2/3 of states would agree on an exit plan amendment to let them go.
“Socialism means different things to different people. For some, it conjures the Soviet Union and the gulag; for others, Scandinavia and guaranteed income. But neither is the true vision of socialism. What the socialist seeks is freedom.
The socialist argument against capitalism isn’t that it makes us poor. It’s that it makes us unfree. When my well-being depends upon your whim, when the basic needs of life compel submission to the market and subjugation at work, we live not in freedom but in domination. Socialists want to end that domination: to establish freedom from rule by the boss, from the need to smile for the sake of a sale, from the obligation to sell for the sake of survival.”

“Tonight at the Marmont, Bennett lies entangled on the bed with Marilyn Manson. They are a passive centerpiece to those on the room’s periphery—Jerry Harrison from Talking Heads, Sharon Osbourne cursing in the doorway, Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon—who have for years have turned out to support LeRoy, the teenage transgender drug-addicted hooker whose literary star rose so improbably in the early ’00s. He is a survivor, a fragile one; Lou Reed and Winona Ryder do readings on his behalf. JT at this moment, dressed per usual in Andy Warhol white wig, sits drunk and crumpled in the corner of the room, until a woman with flame-red hair and kabuki make-up orders him to stand up and have his picture taken, after which he slumps back down.
The woman is Laura Albert, who will soon be exposed as a literary hoaxer, the person who wrote the books and spoke on the phone to the famous in the voice of JT, who drafted her young sister-in-law as his body double, who confected the damaged, outré, beautiful victim that proved irresistible to the cognoscenti. When they find out, they will be angry.
It is 2007, and Laura Albert is telling me “the whole JT thing” was just a bit of fun, how when “we went to the New York Post and we told them Asia Argento was pregnant with JT LeRoy’s baby, we did that with Asia on the phone.” Albert laughs when she says this. Less fun is the betrayal people tell Albert they now feel, for having offered sympathy and support to JT, someone they saw as a victim. Albert dismisses their concerns, saying she felt just as deserving of love as the character she created, and, while she was never able to substantiate the abuse she said she endured at the hands of various people as a child, she did at the time she created JT weigh 320 pounds and feel suicidal and as far as she is concerned, it should not matter if the person you’re helping is not the person you think he is.”

One of the repliers (replicants? replyists?) had the gall to say something to the effect that the woodchipper comment was exactly the kind of threat that the Secret Service investigates every day. How many people threaten the current president and are subsequently investigated? I’m gonna guess less than 1%.

ERMAGERD DATS A THRETT!
It is totally believable that I was going to wheel a woodchipper up on the federal courthouse steps, go in and toss a federal judge over my shoulder then bring him out and feed him into that woodchipper in broad daylight. Yep, sounds like a serious threat to me.
Those people are retards.
Lol!
