A Slice of Omaha Beach: D-Day, 1944 pt. 1

I think it was MikeS who said, ā€œWhat next, Omaha?ā€ It took about 10 seconds to say, “Why not?” Well, for one thing, 10,000 Allied casualties on the first day, It wasn’t a small battle, and a lot of shit happened all at once, kind of like war, anyway…

I decided to work in 1/72 scale this time (a soldier is 1ā€ high) due to the scale of battle, and I could get more men on the field that way. Next was deciding where I wanted to build. I chose a cliff that has a large bunker system full of artillery, and the Rangers are going to attack and scale the cliff, WooHoo! Uh, oh, how do you get there?

Higgins Boats: Built on a design from a Loosiana Swamp Boy, low draft and easy landing, they carry 15 troops, and are swampy as all get out, but they get the job done, of course, until the Germans open up on you. We will get to that….

Water: Yay! I get to spend a lot of time and money experimenting with surface water, you see, I need to have deep water, sunk/blown up Higgins Boats, and blood water up against the shore; mockups will be required.

Army Men!: I have 47/87 finished, and another 30 on deck, tedious is too simple a term for this tiny ass BS, but it’s cool. I’m trying for at least 500+ men, 9 or 10 landing craft, multiple Shermans, and a very busy landscape.

The Germans: I found a guy who 3D prints out various useful objects, very cool but he ships like a snail. We’ll go over the Germans next.

’til next time!

WAR! What is it good for? Making dioramas!

HUH!

          32 years running

Huh? Is that how they measure sexbots? Like how you say you have 120 hours on your boat motor. And if so, WTF? Given the amount of time, either your sexbot is an old hollowed out corn cob or that 32 years is compressed by having gang bangs with her (32 man/years would be the more accurate measurement in that case)

        3. I’ve got little girl hands and I’m nearsighted, so stuff like this ought to be right up my alley. Funny thing, though, I also have little patience and drink about two pots of coffee a day, so repeated, precise, small hand movements are not really my forte. I tried, but after the fourth soupy decal tore on the model plane I screamed obscenities and hurled it into a wall.

We once hung a P38 from the tree in my backyard. Then took turns with the BB gun. I have a vivid memory of shooting and my buddies heckling “you missed!”

I was sure I hit it, so I insisted on an inspection. As it turns out I took the pilot’s head clean off. A nice little FU as I handed the gun to the next guy!

  15. Man, I am awestruck by your level of dedication and skill. Like, just reading the description of what you’re planning on doing made me want a drink.

    OT:
I successfully smoked some pork tenderloins in my grill, and they turned out pretty damn good if I do say so myself. Nothing special, just coated them in olive oil, rolled them in some Steak Shake, smoked them around 250 for a couple of hours over apple. Came out medium rare, with a nice ring. In the future, I think it’s an either/or thing with apple and a very flavorful rub. I think next time I’ll skip the rub and do either apple or like a cherry, or keep the rub and do mesquite. I love hickory, but I kind of like it with beef more than pork.

    1. Yusef drives a Kia

      Can I come over?

      1. It’s a long drive. Maybe there should be a companion program to BIF. SIF? Smoke it forward? Wait, that might not work…

    2. Tundra

I use apple a lot. I like hickory but it seems to overwhelm the meat easier.

I have a rotisserie for one of my grills and it’s my favorite way to do pork tenderloin. Some veggies in the drip pan and go!

      1. The Bearded Hobbit

        I use apple a lot.

I had a friend who smoked a lot and said that apple was the best. I recall going to a party at his house when he asked me to cut some more smoked turkey. I was caught by his wife eating one slice for each slice that I put on the tray.

        … Hobbit

    3. CPRM

Apple wood is pork’s best friend. Pork Chops and Apple Sauce!

    4. Spudalicious

I’ve gone from Apple to cherry. Both are superb paired with hickory.

Next time try smoke for the same amount of time at 225 and finish with a reverse sear.

      1. So like 1/3 hickory 2/3 apple?

I need to get a good thermometer I can mount to the lid. From my beer brewing days I get OCD about checking the temperature, but right now I’m just cracking open the top vent and poking a digital thermometer in the top.

The reverse sear is a great idea. Now that I know I can do it without botching it, I want to move on to fattier cuts. Really, this is all part of a long plan to develop my own source of burnt ends and crispy fat.

        1. CPRM

This goes back to my stance on recipes, if I try to figure out the temp of meat it always fucks things up, I’m better cooking by ‘feel’.

The Atlantic Wall was a Poor Maginot Line, the Germans had 4 Years, and dropped the Ball at the worst time,
      Superiority Complex?

      1. DenverJ

I think that’s a bit unfair. The Maginot Line was a perfect example of preparing for the last war, not the next; the French didn’t understand the threat and the Blitzkrieg simply went around. The Germans, on the other hand, did understand the threat, but had thousands of miles of coast to protect. You must admit the defenses were formidable. The Allies did a great job convincing the Germans that the invasion was going to be elsewhere, and if IRC, had diverted an entire division of Panzers north. As to the 4 years, that’s not really accurate either, because for the first two or three, they were simply not worried about defense, and besides the Superiority Complex, there were other reasons not to be. Namely that they were still expanding, Britain was almost defeated, and the US took its sweet time becoming a major threat in the European theater, and even then was first a threat mostly to the Italians. I doubt I would have been planning defenses 4 years before D-day.

        1. DenverJ

err, *The Allies did a great job convincing the Germans that the invasion was going to be elsewhere, and if IRC, THE GERMANS had diverted an entire division of Panzers north.*

          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_Wall

          1. DenverJ

Yes, and its actually one of history’s major engineering accomplishments to build that amount of fortifications, covering that distance, in that short a period. I forget the exact numbers, but seem to recall that never before or after has so much concrete been poured in that amount of time.

          2. Chafed

When I visited in 1987 it looked like a moonscape covered in grass. When the offshore batteries scored a direct hit on the gun emplacements only piles of concrete rubble were left. I still don’t feel bad for those Nazi bastards.

          3. DenverJ

87 was the year I graduated from high school. Two years before the fall of the Berlin Wall, which may actually be when future historians will date the end of WWII. I’d like to see it. Wonder if it still looks like it did in 87.
As for “feel(ing) bad for those Nazi bastards”, well, they were just dumb kids fighting for what their elders told them was righteous. Are the US soldiers (average age 19) who fought in Vietnam personally responsible for the war crimes of the government that sent them to fight?
The people in those bunkers weren’t evil characters from Call of Duty; they were 17 and 18 year old kids doing what their society told them they should do: fight for their nation, countrymen, women, and children.

Looks like Balderson is going to win. CNN busy spinning. Special elections are always weird. My guess is Balderson wins easily in November when the media isn’t so focused on Ohio. Democrats will probably stay home.

    1. Pope Jimbo

That is funny. When I checked a few hours ago, it looked like the GOP was going to get edged. Now I can look forward to more tears tomorrow morning.

What is extra funny about the way it went down was that when I checked the spread was .7% or something and there was squawking on both sides about a recount. I guess anything less than .5% is an automatic recount. When I was checking the GOP was demanding a recount anyhow and the Dems were saying no way, a rule is a rule. Now that it has flipped, I’m sure that both sides have also flipped their arguments. I love the hypocrisy.

      1. Scoff all you want at the “spin” the mediaā„¢ will put on it, but I live here, the fact that this was so close is not a good sign for team red. I hate ’em both so it’s no skin off my nose either way. Should have been a slam dunk for Balderson.

        1. CPRM

Balderson sounds like a Viking name. That is all I have to comment on.

I haven’t followed this race – what’s going-on? Is there something “wrong” with Balderson?

          1. CPRM

It’s about the ‘Blue Wave’ I think he’s the Rep, and projected to win, so teams are projecting that on the fall elections.

          2. Not that I’m aware of, he’s a run of the mill Republican, hits all the GOP talking points – low taxes, pro-military, tough on crime, build the wall, loves God and guns. I think the bad news for R’s is the enthusiasm of the D’s, maybe the R’s mailed this in because they, like me, the thought it was going to be a walk in the park, but the D’s apparently had other ideas, and got out the voters. That had to be the reason it was so close because as I said earlier this district leans hard right and has for decades.

          3. RAHeinlein

Thanks for the insight. I have sincere concerns about the Dem’s using illegal voting, particularly students.

          4. Urthona

The poll spread was basically a tie for several months now so him winning I don’t take as a bad sign for Republicans necessarily.

          5. But the polls are all run by leftist and they distort things to fit their narrative, that’s why they all said Trump was dead it the water. You can’t trust poll. /Right wing radio guy

The worst case, i.e. tin foil hat crowd theory, is that he’s a test case for banning all conservatives even tho before this most conservative thought he was a nutjob as well, and you can follow about 56,231 just as crazy if not more so conservatives on those sites every day.

    2. CPRM

Yes, Alex Jones is nuts, and should not be taken seriously, and this is just going to help him build a case of conspiracy his fervent followers will buy hook line and sinker and won’t help anyone other than him.

  29. Pan Zagloba

OK, I’m in for the next installment. It’s the water effects that interest me the most – I’ve seen some amazing stuff people pulled off that I have no idea how in the hell.

    1. CPRM

“I have no idea where water comes from” spoken like someone who grew up in a communist country. (I kid, or did I)

      1. Gustave Lytton

I’ve lived most of my life on well water. /knows where water comes from
And my folks did the gentleman farmer thing /knows where the hamburger comes from

        1. CPRM

You don’t know where water comes from unless you have a sandpoint.

          1. Gustave Lytton

Static water level is 70′ at my place. Clay starts about 6-9″ down. Good luck hand driving! It should get easier at around 30′ when it transitions to sandy clay before becoming sandstone.

          2. Yusef drives a Kia

I’m working with EPS foam and Acrylics, no clay here…..
            WTF?

          3. CPRM

            Lame.

          4. Playa Manhattan

I guess he just doesn’t want to drill it very hard.

          5. Gustave Lytton

I’ll stick to a drilling service with powered equipment. Last time they air drilled it down to 165′, according to the well card.

          6. Plinker762

I grew up with water from a well with a sandpoint. I remember changing the point a couple of times.

    2. Yusef drives a Kia

I’m experimenting with the Water,so far so good, I’ll let you know….

  30. CPRM

Where the ladies at? Tundra told me there were lots of hot chicks here.

    1. CPRM

My dad loved Alice Cooper! /make you feel old

    1. CPRM

I think the reason I like Iron Maiden over other 80s metal is that the bass is present, so many others are just too high pitched for me.

      1. Yusef drives a Kia

Steve Harris will just kick you out of the way, He’s playing the Bass!

      2. Chafed

James Hetfield reluctantly nods in agreement.

  34. F. Stupidity Jr.

I’m so pissed about this social media censorship I could spit. And I am weary of this idea that “the market will correct what’s going on here”. If we had a free market, yes, of course it would. But every tech brand anyone’s ever heard of – Facebook, Google, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram – are in bed with the Democrats. Tech companies might be “private companies” (please, spare me), but the Democrats occupy house seats, senate seats, a shit-ton of unelected positions in DC, and they are unapologetically pro-censorship.

We don’t have a free market. Free market solutions don’t apply where the free market doesn’t exist.

    1. hayeksplosives

This censorship of ideas, whether by private corporations with an effective monopoly or by the government itself, is the single most worrisome erosion of rights of my lifetime.

      It’s a big effing deal.

      1. Gustave Lytton

We have little Maoist Red Guards conducting struggle sessions first in supposed institutions of higher learning and then in ordinary society, now we have wide swathes of society advocating for the very unamerican idea of stifling opposing opinions. Only a couple years ago the ACLU were free speech extremists, opposed to suppressing the vilest of speakers.

It’s as sad as seeing MLK’s dream of a colorblind society being burned upon the pile of identity politics and greivance mongering.

        1. Chafed

          What GL said.

      2. Chafed

I’m not sure it is a monopoly HS. At least I don’t think it is one that can last. I think this goodthink agenda is becoming a marketing opportunity for upstart competitors.

    2. straffinrun

FS Jr, there are ways to go after these companies that limit the reach of government and ways that would expand the reach. I’d suggest going after them for false or deceptive advertising, breach of TOS and forcing them to be either publishers or simply platforms. As of now, they get the protections of being a platform w/o the legal liabilities involved with being a publisher.

  35. R C Dean

Awesome, Yusef. I love dioramas, and have exactly zero of the skills or temperament to do them.
