I developed a passion for shooting and hunting at an early age. I suppose my Grandfather’s and Father’s love of firearms rubbed off on me. Shooting for me was what golf is to others. It is an activity that requires discipline, an activity where focus and precision pays off. I constantly competed against myself always trying to improve and over time with effort the improvement was very evident to me. Like most the majority of my shooting was done with 22 Long Rifle because of economy. When I was about 14 years old my father gave me a wonderful Christmas gift – a Lee Precision handloading set and a Ruger No.3 rifle chambered in 22 Hornet. Suddenly I could shoot center fire for less than the price of 22 Long Rifle.
Since that Christmas, I have reloaded hundreds of thousands of rounds, maybe approaching a million and a half, in every caliber you can imagine, save the new-fangled rounds that have come out in recent years. Yes, I said it. Get the hell off of my lawn.
Since those days our economy has expanded dramatically, the cost of reloading components has risen and the cost of bulk ammunition in common calibers has fallen. For plinking ammo reloading is not as economical as it used to be but reloading still has an important place. Uncommon calibers can be exorbitantly expensive and difficult to find. Precision rifle shooters cannot obtain the quality of ammunition their sport demands off the shelf. For people like me, reloading is a very enjoyable hobby and an end in itself. With experience one can acquire one heck of an education about the sport, and with a small stock of components and tools never lack for ammo in a pinch.
Many people, like me, got their introduction to reloading with a Lee Precision handloader kit. It is simple to use and at about forty bucks the smallest outlay of cash to get started making your own ammunition. I haven’t found any distributors for these little gems but you can buy them directly from Lee Precision.
I am not aware of any other companies that fill that niche but if you want to step up to more sophisticated tools there are many manufacturers. The big names are RCBS, Lee Precision, Redding, Lyman, Hornady, Dillon, Forster and MEC. All of these companies have websites (links above) and are distributed through a large number of suppliers. I am not going to make strong endorsements for any of them because they all make quality products that are better in some ways than the others. Like choosing a firearm the beginning reloader will have to decide by their own personal preferences.
As for distributors there is a plethora of them. If you prefer shopping in-store Bass Pro and Cabela’s keep a good stock on the shelf. There is also the odd and end small sporting goods stores around. For mail order there are number of large houses for comparison shopping. I find that their prices are very competitive, their stock reliable and their service top-notch. These include Midway USA, Wideners, Brownells, Precision Reloading, Natchez Shooter’s Supply and Cheaper Than Dirt. This is by no means a comprehensive list.
The first step up from the Lee handloader kit is a single stage press. This press bolts onto a sturdy work bench and holds one die at a time. There are some very high quality single stage presses out there and these happen to be my personal favorite. I can concentrate on one step at a time and pay close attention to every detail. My personal press is a Forster. I consider it of the highest quality. It also has great advantage in convenience as the dies are held in a groove so you don’t spent time screwing them in and readjusting each time you change dies. Additionally it has clamping jaws to hold the cases so no large sets of shell holders are needed.
Forster co-axial presses are not cheap but definitely worth every penny for the hard core reloader. The next step up from the single stage press are multi-stage presses. These presses hold more than one die at a time and each crank of the handle performs one step of the process on multiple cases as they progress around a turret. Spent brass goes in one end and a fully loaded case comes out with each crank of the handle. Obviously these presses produce loaded ammunition for the high volume shooter.
The last step up would be motor powered presses. Many of the manual progressive loaders can be accessorized with motors and by now we are talking about high budget equipment. Dillon is commonly considered the top of the line motorized progressive loader and most competitive shooters use them but there are others that work well.
I have a progressive loader but I prefer to use my single stage press. With the multi-stage press there are too many things going on at once for me to fully pay attention. If you are a novice intending to get into loading your own ammunition I highly recommend starting out with a single stage press. Safety must always come first so take your time. Don’t get in over your head. When you have learned all of the ins and outs of the loading process and all of the things that can go wrong then move up to a multi-stage press.
Addendum
A recent study showed that CCL holders are six times less likely to commit crimes than police officers.
There is a reason for that. These are people who are law abiding by nature and interested in keeping their licenses. I suspect the same is true for reloaders. These people pay attention to detail. They follow the rules. That becomes second nature to them. Safety is a huge concern and they become accustomed to thinking that way. If you program yourself to behave that way reloading can be safe and rewarding. Never forget and become careless or have lax standards. You are dealing with inflammable materials that can develop very high pressures very quickly. Bullets, even travelling at low speed have incredible momentum. They carry more energy than you think even at speeds low enough to see with your eye. A relatively light lead slug travelling at the speed of an airsoft pellet can be deadly. You can lose eyes, fingers, get broken bones or severed arteries. You can receive severe burns. If you have a store of gunpowder in your reloading area, depending on how much, you might want to consider that if your house catches fire you may have to stand in the street and stop the firemen from approaching the structure. Let it blow. Nothing in your house is worth someone losing a life over. I threw all of the candles out of my house years ago. I don’t smoke in my reloading room.
Safety. Safety. Safety. Always on my mind. In the forty years or so that I have been reloading ammunition I have never had a single failure. Every single cartridge I make is done with great care. I own about a dozen fire extinguishers. Kitchen, living room, Jeep, Honda, bedroom, garage, outside shed, mule, and two extra bedrooms.
Don’t be that guy. Be Safe. Stuff can be replaced. People can’t be.
Awesome article. Just don’t get me hooked. I already have enough expensive hobbies.
Too late! Wait until you see the upcoming posts in the series.
Agreed. Great article!
That said, my wife will kill me if I start buying reloading gear. Too many other things we need to spend money on (we both hate the tile in the master bedroom of our house. It was the one thing we didn’t like when we bought it last year. Alas, that’s at least an $8K job, and will have to wait).
For now, I’ll just stick to buying LAX ammo reloads.
Great article Suthen! Excellent advice.
Add reloading to the list of things I quit doing when I had kids. I need to start up again and teach them as well.
Woohoo. Thx Suthen
save the new-fangled rounds that have come out in recent years.
I don’t follow this terribly closely, but a buddy of mine who is much more serious and informed about these things sprung for a new rifle in one of the “short magnum” calibers that came out not too long ago. Nice gun (don’t recall the maker), he got a lightweight version to carry while hunting. But, those short magnums are loaded with hot fast-burning powders, making for a sharp kick, a nasty report, and finicky ammo – it took awhile for him to find the right load to shoot accurately.
Meanwhile, my .300 eats everything you feed it, has a gentle-ish kick and report, and puts everything within an inch and a half or better at 100 yards (with the exception of some lighter-weight bullets that just never grouped well). I like slow powder, and if that means I need a long-action rifle, then so be it.
It’s a trade off. Shorter actions mean lighter guns. A lighter gun can be incredibly nice if you’re going to lug it around all over Hell’s half acre, but a lighter gun with the same total recoil will have a sharper and harder felt recoil than a heavier one. My dad has bad shoulders, and prefers a softer recoil; my uncle has a bad back and prefers a lighter gun. De gustibus and all that.
De gustibus
As ever, get and use whatever jiggles your handle. My .300 is a heavy beast
De gustibus
As ever, get and use whatever jiggles your handle. My .300 is a heavy beast (I think they actually lightened the barrel a little bit for the current version). It fits me, though – I (increasingly) rarely haul it over rough terrain, hunting more and more from stands or ambush locations, I think the last time I shot it at an animal offhand rather than with a rest was 10 years ago, and it doesn’t give me a flinch. But I can absolutely see why it wouldn’t fit someone who hunted differently than I do.
Nice! I have a cheaper Remington in the same caliber. Love it.
I’d probably get a lot more use out of it if I hunted.
Good article, Suthen.
I don’t reload, but I do save all my brass. The plan is that someday (maybe when I retire) I will take up reloading.
Great article Suthen. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
I imagine this is somewhat calming to do because of the precision and process nature of it.
Anyone have recommendations for goods sources for load data? I find that the availability of bullets and powders is hit and miss, and often I can’t get load data for the supplies I have. I’m able to take a SWAG based on the information I have, but when dealing with explosives I like to have more confidence that I’m doing the right thing.
The folks at Hodgdon Powder may have the info you need (https://www.hodgdon.com).
Load data from powder manufacturers is going to only show loads for their powders, same for bullet manufacturers. I’d say get three or four manuals from various sources. Lee, Lyman, RCBS, should both be powder/bullet agnostic. Hornady, Sierra, et al, will only show you loads for their respective bullets, but a starting load using a given Sierra bullet (for example) should make an adequate starting load for another manufacturer’s bullet of the same specs (weight, diameter, profile). I wouldn’t go swapping components in a load you’ve already got worked up close to max load.
Get a subscription to http://www.ammoguide.com. You should probably have a few reloading data books as well, but AmmoGuide is a huge amount of information for not much money.
How many rounds can you load per hour using a single stage press? The reason I would look at a progressive press is the volume of ammo you can churn out, but your safety warnings are well-heeded.
I have a few expensive rounds that make sense to reload (.45-70 and .460 S&W Mag) but for most of the others it’s easier (maybe not cheaper in large volume but the margins are low) to just buy it. I would like to start reloading though if for no other reason than self-sufficiency.
Not only can you save on those rounds, but get more component options reloading.
I have single stage RCBS. I’ve never checked since I never cared about speed, but it’s difficult to give RPH since you need to do each step in batches. I’m sure someone ha tracked it though. When I reloaded 44s I could probably reload a batch of 50 in a couple hours, but that was being meticulous and doesn’t include time in the case tumbler for example. Just things like primer extraction, case trimming and sizing, bullet seating, etc. My rifle rounds were similar I think, but had slightly different times for certain steps.
Thanks Suthen! Another good read. I like that this is becoming a habit for you.
So Reloading is to important to be left to orphans?
Honestly given my Romanianess I got nothing…
Giving the orphans access to explosives and control over your munitions is asking for a revolt.
some orphans are kinda revolting after a day in the mines
This makes me sad. Not only have Europeans been alienated from the most important means of their natural right to self defense, you also are denied the pure joy of firearm ownership and ‘shop talk’ that comes with firearm ownership. Get over here Pie!
a plane ticked is like 700 bucks. Also hotels are outrageously expensive in the US for some reason. Maybe airbnb is cheaper i dun no.
I have a Ruger #3 in .22 Hornet. It’s a great fall turkey rifle and with mild loads and a hard-cast lead bullet, great for small game.
do not shoot poor innocent turkeys you … you … animal
How can I eat them otherwise? I’m too old to run them down on foot.
Where is it that they let you shoot turkey with a rifle?
Here in KY, it is shotgun or arrow.
Fall season in Colorado is any turkey, rifles OK.
Dad once shot a turkey with a rifle by shooting its head off. Dad was a crack shot.
… Hobbit
Its that way in at least some other states.
Yeah, mostly Western states, as far as I know.
Of course, I mainly use the .22 Hornet because the bastards in the shooting sports industry refuse to listen to me and bring back the .25 Stevens rimfire.
OT: NYT’s latest hire sure sounds like a doll.

Naomi Wu damn it aka sexy cyborg
Pretty sure the boobs are aftermarket bolt-ons. At least its not false advertising since she presents as a cyborg.
For sure, and her like default resting face is intense as hell. Still, though…
She publicly stated they are.
Oops, Grizz posted this on Morning Lynx.
They put her on the editorial board?
Jesus
I told you mammals several times. When an errant female mammal acts out in varied atrocious ways, it is simply a signal that she needs good dick.

Something about sticking it in crazy?
Cause that’s penis loppin’ level of crazy.
Urban Meyer is supposed to be harangued for not firing someone for what that person might have done in his personal life, meanwhile NYT defends hiring someone who’s professional life is littered with examples of horrible behavior.
Meyer should just say he votes straight D and then all will be forgiven.
Let Vox’s Gaza Bridge expert explain to you why she’s not racist, though.
People this stupid are dangerous.
Best reply:
“Ah, the subtle, anti-racist nuance of “Fuck white people.”
Neontaster is one of the better people on Twitter.
And his daughter-in-law is a doctor who practices medicine 😉
He’s Ben Shapiro’s dad!?
“A lot of people on the internet today confuse the expressive way eugenicists talk about “defective people” with actual genocidal tendencies, for some unfathomable reason.”
And now she’s playing the victim, of course
“it was just a reaction to the horrible things people tweeted at me, as evidenced by these tweets which were sent months after a bunch of the racist stuff I wrote”
The NYT shouldn’t fire her because she’s racist.
The NYT should fire her because she’s not up to their editorial standards for writing bullshit.
the expressive way anti-racists and minorities talk about “white people” with actual race-based hatred
Mostly, I read what these SJWs say, so the way they express themselves is not really a factor. I look more at the content of what they say, not how they say it, and some of its pretty fucking racist.
I do appreciate the attempt to divert from what they say to how they say it, though. I take that as a tacit admission that what they are saying is pretty fucking racist.
“The Times Can Hire and Fire Whomever It Likes
By Kevin D. Williamson
For some mysterious reason, my name keeps coming up in connection with that of Sarah Jeong, a writer recently hired by the New York Times editorial board. I am not familiar with her work, but there is a social-media campaign currently under way, sometimes using my name, seeking to have her fired from the position in response to some odious and boneheaded tweets that might be summarized as “Derka derka white people.”
I am agnostic on the question of whom the New York Times hires and why. They employ some excellent reporters, a couple of very good columnists (Hey, Ross!), a fair number of mediocrities, and Paul Krugman.
I assume that the editors of the Times knew exactly who and what Jeong was when they hired her. If not, then it isn’t Jeong who needs to be fired — it’s the negligent people who hired her.”
https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/sarah-jeong-twitter-new-york-times-hire-who-it-wants/
Who is this guy? Rational conversation is forbidden? Burn the witch!
He doesn’t think much about a lot of white people, too.
Oh, snap!
“Derka derka white people.”
It’s “Derka *clap* derka *clap* white *clap* people.”
I’m honestly kinda sad I’m off Twitter, ‘cuz I’d love to see that posted on threads about the bigot.
I agree that they can hire and fire who they like. But, I can now use this information that they knowingly went forward with hiring an avowed racist as evidence that they’re comparable to the Daily Stormer, another racist rag.

yes.
Thanks for writing this series, Suthenboy. This is nicely thought out and very clear.
(Note to Glibertariat: Suthen was the one who wanted the disclaimer at the top. Don’t sue him if you’re a dumbass and commit dumbassery!)

Great article Southen. I look forward to the rest.
Huh, I never considered that it might have come from anywhere else.
“Don’t sue him if you’re a dumbass and commit dumbassery!”

I’ll get to this right after replacing the primary hard drive in my laptop. Damn SSDs give no warning at all.

https://apnews.com/d24e6ecc38ea49e39bba937af361ff2c
“Ian Morrison donated sperm in 1976 on the condition that he remain anonymous. That now-broken promise angers him; he has always believed a contract is a contract. Beyond that, though, he worries about whether the children seeking their donors have considered the potential grief for the people who raised them[…]The truth about Gypsy Diamond’s origins unraveled on the day of her grandfather’s funeral. Her parents were separating, and emotions were raw. Diamond, then 21, was standing in the kitchen with her mother, Sue, when the words tumbled out. “I need to tell you something,” Sue said abruptly. “Your dad is not your biological father.”[…]She adored her dad. Now, she was hearing a stranger’s sperm had been used to conceive both her and her brother.”
What possible good can come from this? If someone donates *anonymously* they want to be *anonymous*. Also, just like (IMO) “open adoptions”, this seems to confuse people more and end up tearing apart both families. Fuck the government for, ONCE AGAIN, mandating something that should be voluntary.
A long time ago I saw some MTV thing where the son of a lesbian couple giddily contacted his biological father (sperm donor). I remember it struck me as incredibly sad…..here’s this kid who desperately wants to connect with a father figure and some poor random dude who now has to deal with it who, 18 years before, just wanted to help someone out and maybe make a quick buck.
i applied to be a donor. i answered the questions truthfully during screening and was turned down. i bet some of these kids are going to wonder which parent gave them that genetic disorder despite not having a family history.
Before we started IVF to get my daughter, my wife and I were required to undergo genetic testing from the fertility clinic.
My results came back the day before me wife’s. We were sweating it out for 24 hours as it turns out I am a carrier for Niemann-Pick Type C.
I have no idea where that comes from, none of my ancestors are even remotely related to any of the groups in which it is common.
This is quite common actually. There are many degenerative, incurable, invariably fatal genetic diseases that are autosomal *dominant* (Huntington’s comes to mind) that still could go for generations without manifesting (to say nothing about autosomal recessive).
The trope about knowing genetic history is not (IMO) nearly as important as it’s trumped up to be. Having an intact, non-confusing family structure is, I think, far more important to someone’s health than knowing if they have some extremely rare genetic condition that likely can’t be cured anyway.
something’s wrong with your post. there were no boobs.
I’m on a boob hiatus. The market was getting saturated with boobs and I need it to cool down.
I beg to differ.
Something is going down…
The market was getting saturated with boobs and I need it to cool down.
Sounds . . .perky.
And I am sure violating anonymity requests will have no impact on future decisions by men as to whether to be donors or not.
“Gypsy Diamond” and has daddy issues?
I’ll walk away without further comment.
Wasn’t she that chick in Pacific Rim?
I started poking around after reading this and, if you really want to go down the rabbit hole try this on for size:
http://www.adoptionbirthmothers.com/
Just like there’s a man-o-sphere that seems to blame every single problem in their lives on “Western women”, there is apparently an “anti-adoption-o-sphere” that blames every single problem in their lives on being adopted. As if being raised by your 16 year old mother would be some kind of panacea that would create endless happiness and bliss and meaning. On the same side, there’s people who relinquished their children at age 16 and curse the universe that they were “duped” into it by predatory adoption culture. They would have been able to raise that child just fine on their own damn it! These folks think that adoption should be *illegal* unless the bio-parents are dead. Right. Cause being raised by a 17 year old meth addict is so much better than being adopted by an infertile couple.
More:
“Diamond, in turn, fretted over how her father would react to her blossoming friendship with Peacock. Her dad had been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s, and Diamond feared the news might confuse or upset him. She didn’t want him to think Peacock was taking his place. She put off the conversation for months. When she finally told him, she kept things simple and factual. To her relief, he seemed to take the news well.”
And that’s the last we hear about her Dad. Gee, so glad that worked out so well for you. No worries, he’s got Alzheimer’s so he won’t remember anyway right? Besides, fuck that guy, you don’t have his genes. He only raised you and put up with your shit for 18 years, that’s totally irrelevant compared to a random sequence of amino acids!

Good thing the NYDN didn’t just fire 50% of their editorial staff and are not on the expressway to bankruptcy and liquidation… oh wait, the did and they are.
I can’t wait until dead tree “journalism” finally gives up the ghost permanently.
Thanks, Suthen. A lot less intimidating than I expected.
Does it make financial sense to reload shot shells?
It can. I never reloaded shotshells since it takes different equipment and I don’t shoot much shotgun. Today, I’m guessing like brass rounds it makes more sense to reload the spendy specialty stuff, like turkey loads, than the cheap plinking loads.
Thank you.
“If you have a store of gunpowder in your reloading area, depending on how much, you might want to consider that if your house catches fire you may have to stand in the street and stop the firemen from approaching the structure. Let it blow. Nothing in your house is worth someone losing a life over. I threw all of the candles out of my house years ago.”
Not sure how candles are dangerous, unless there are boxes full of them. Anyway, one way to store gunpowder if there is room on the property is a little trailer. Unlike adding a shed, if it’s on wheels then it’s not assessed for taxes.
Never seen an assault candle, I take it
Roman candles?
Exactly.
Can the single stage press double as a bottle capper? It might be worth it then.
Busy at work, don’t have time to read the article. Just tell me it’s not about that shitty Metallica album and I’ll give it a go.
Great article, Suthen.
I used to reload because I shoot an oddball caliber (7×57). It was fun to cook up a new batch then go the the shooting spot in the forest about ten minutes away. Then they closed the road to that area and the new places are 30-60 minutes away. Kind of takes away the spontaneity and I lost interest.
I got my setup from Dad who got it from Herters (how’s that for a name from the past). The biggest PITA of my setup is the balance beam powder scale. If I start reloading again an electronic powder dispenser will be the first purchase.
… Hobbit
Good, at least it won’t catch on fire!!!
Never got into loading, but I always appreciated Dillon’s catalogs over the years. They definitely have a target market.

Yeah, I get their ads everywhere. That was one off my favs.
Urban Meyer is supposed to be harangued for not firing someone for what that person might have done in his personal life, meanwhile NYT defends hiring someone who’s professional life is littered with examples of horrible behavior.
Oh, you kids and your whataboutisms. That’s completely different, because vagina superpower.
Pussy privilege + Proggy privilege makes someone untouchable. Roman Polanski doesn’t even have the former and he gets a pass for child rape. Combine them and you could get a pass for being a serial killer.
The fact that the crazy chick saved all of her text messages with Urban’s wife just shows you how shady she is.
Good stuff, S.
Go reload.
That’s what she said!
I assume that the editors of the Times knew exactly who and what Jeong was when they hired her. If not, then it isn’t Jeong who needs to be fired — it’s the negligent people who hired her.
Ouch.
at least her biases are public. it’s kind of refreshing, really. everyone has a bias. she’ll never escape them. they will influence her writing.
the more important issue is: can she write?
KDW has a bias. he’s also a very good writer. but the leftist mob came for him anyway.
I don’t understand why it’s apparently so hard for them. All the idiots would have to do is substitute any other ethnic group for ‘white’ in their statements, and the racism would be obvious even to their stunted intellects. Substitute ‘black’ for white in those tweets, and you’d have statements I don’t think David Duke or Richard Spencer would stand by. (In public, anyway).
They are of the position that “yes, it would be racist if you were talking about ‘blacks’, but it’s impossible to be racists to whites”
Yes
And apparently this is an accepted enough explanation that the NYT would put an advocate of said position on its editorial board.
I think we’re thru the looking glass.
Generational coal miners living in rural Virginia can go pound sand if they’re white; also, Ta-Nehisi Coates is uniquely put-upon, a modern tragedy, a life snuffed out by the oppressive culture of white supremacy–despite being very much alive and pulling six-figure income from adoring, gullible white lefties.
Yeah, I think this is exactly the point that needs to be fought. No one gets to have their own personal subjective truth.
The really sad thing is that they are objectively working against a society where race is irrelevant. To Badolph and RC Dean’s comments; they are creating a society where it’s the decisive factor.
Why would they care? Her tribe isn’t going to call her out for this, they’re going to give her accolades and pile the victim cred on even higher. This is what they want.
All the idiots would have to do is substitute any other ethnic group for ‘white’ in their statements, and the racism would be obvious even to their stunted intellects.
They have constructed elaborate ramparts of rationalizations that only white people have power, so only white people can be racist. Now, a normal person can see the obvious bullshit in that from both an intellectual perspective and from personal experience. But these are True Believers; they cannot allow themselves to consider that their beliefs are wrong.
Real racism is displayed by Asians on business travel.
Pretty sure some Asians are honorary white people. How you sort Asians into “crypto-whites” v. “POCs”, I have no clue.
I forget the comedian, but she used the terms “jungle Asian” and “fancy Asian”.
The Asian on the left is a POC, the one on the right is a crypto white. Just like the gay man on the left is a heroic victim of oppression and the one on the right is a Cismale Shitlord oppressing true victims. The real question for our time is will these neo marxist parasites spiral into self destruction before or after they kill Western Civ.
will these neo marxist parasites spiral into self destruction before or after they kill Western Civ.

How can this be?! Don’t they understand he wants to send the Army marching South killing every brown person in sight until there aren’t any left to kill!??!

Shocking I tell you. SHOCKING.
They are also more conservative on social issues — especially abortion — than the average voter.
prog nut punch?
Who knew so many Latinos were racists?
People that follow the rules resent people that cheat? Who knew?
We had a fair number of Costa Ricans in my hometown growing up. I reckon cause of all the apple orchards in the county. Despite being Catholic brown people in the buckle of the bible belt, as long as they spoke English they were welcome. The emphasis on family, church, and food bridged the divide. And most of the kids who were raised there, and now their kids and grand kids generally consider themselves ‘white’. Save for those unfortunate souls who have fallen afoul of the indoctrination of public universities and are now ‘woke’.
And most of the kids who were raised there, and now their kids and grand kids generally consider themselves ‘white’.
That’s the normal course of things. And it’s a healthy evolution of a culture. And there’s nothing that says to me that it wouldn’t happen in perpetuity with successive waves of immigrants. The problem is government intervention. The government actively intervenes to establish notions of “racial pride” or “ethnic solidarity” that sets immigrants against their neighbors and their neighbors against them. It’s a shame, really.
And there’s nothing that says to me that it wouldn’t happen in perpetuity with successive waves of immigrants.
Immigrants trickling in and dispersing, yes.
Immigrants arriving in large enough numbers and staying in ethnic enclaves, maybe not.
But, that happened before. We have actual historical evidence. The Jews and Polish. The Italians before them. The Irish before them. And the Germans before them. They all adapt to the broader culture, changing it modestly, and everyone goes on their merry way.
The only thing that’s changed is that we have the government, colleges (supported by the government) and ethnic activists (also supported by the government) insisting that the broader culture has to adapt to the immigrants. That’s the very thing that keeps them grouped in ethnic enclaves.
But, that happened before.
True, and it even happened with immigrants who didn’t speak the language, although they shared some other cultural affinities, being Western or Central European. Of course, Europeans are also famously incapable of getting along with each other, so . . . .
I definitely think the biggest thing working against assimilation now is the government and NGO action you point out. I’d point out a couple of things that I think are at least worth looking at:
The 19th/early 20th century wave of immigration definitely set up ethnic enclaves. How long did they actually last, as compared to, say, the barrio enclaves you see in a lot of Southwestern towns and cities, or the Hmong immigrants from the ’70s (who aren’t notably assimilated even now, I don’t think).
I have the vague impression that Vietnamese immigrants from the ’70s have assimilated pretty well. Why the difference (if there is one) between the Vietnamese and the Hmong?
“The government actively intervenes to establish notions of “racial pride” or “ethnic solidarity” that sets immigrants against their neighbors and their neighbors against them.”
Feature not bug. Divide and conquer.
Feature not bug. Divide and conquer.
I think, in a big way. If the current set of ethnic minorities ever fully integrated into American life, it would be the death of the Democrats. I think it’s why you saw the Democrats push a lot of the positions like “cultural integrity”, “racial pride” or “ethnic solidarity” in the wake of the defection of earlier immigrant waves to Nixon in the 70s and Reagan in the 80s. All this nonsense is custom-designed to make ethnic minorities dependent on a set of political patrons.
Thanks for this, Suthen. I’m planning on getting into reloading eventually and pieces like this really help me figure out where to start. You da man!
Thanks for this write-up, Suthen. Not a gun guy myself, but my brother is. Gonna see if this would be of interest to him.
Interesting article. I’ve thought about reloading, but I don’t get much chance to shoot and when I do it’s mostly cheap rounds like 7.62×39. However, I do have some guns in pricier rounds, like 303 British, that might be worth reloading. I’ve also got a Gewehr 88 that might benefit from hand loading, since the barrels weren’t designed for the pressures exerted by modern loads.
I’m not seeing a comment section on the afternoon links.
WTF is this some cosmo lefty site? can’t comment on afternoon links!
STEVE SMITH HID THE COMMENT SECTION AND BY HID, MEAN…..
The IowaHawk tweet linked by STEVE is a good one. AND BY LINKED, MEAN . . .
Stay tuned each Thursday in August for more in this great series!
I reload a number of different calibers that doesn’t have readily available ammo. .45 Winc Mag, 30 Herrett, 6.5 X .223, .30 Remington and another 10 or so of ordinary stuff. 270 Weatherby costs 45 bucks or so a box, I stocked up on the fixings a few years back and can get in for a quarter or so round (at the old prices) . I hardly shoot any more, my shooting buddies have relocated to the Big Range in the Sky. Single press RCBS and mostly RCBS equipment. I tend to load down to the starting loads or just slightly above starting. Deer are thin skinned and at Minnesota ranges (40-50 yards) easy to take.
Every powder company has good info, my manuals are way outdated and with lots of new and different powders I wouldn’t try any new stuff without updated info.
Never, never use just a little ‘extra powder’ to try to make a hotter load. Pressures are a funny thing, can get dangerous in a hurry.
I used to shoot a lot of trap and skeet but haven’t shot a shotgun for 20 years or more. I gave all my shotgun reloading equipment away a few years ago to a younger friend but to my knowledge he hasn’t taken the plunge.
And thanks, Suthen, hope you motivate some of the Glibs into taking the handoff. If anyone has a reloading friend there’s a good chance your buddy will show you what you need to do. Maybe for the cost of a set of dies one can reload with your friend, save the 6 pack until you get finished though.
