Good morning, dear Glibertariat. Happy Friday!
I had a tough day yesterday. You’ll all remember the battles I am waging against my own personal Goliath at present. Yesterday I spent the entire annoying day being identified and background-checked, photographed, fingerprinted, and drug tested (for which they practically do a strip search). Driving all over Chicagoland. Filling out more forms. Proving citizenship. Waiting in more lines. Shelling out more cash.
So, please excuse the lackluster nature of my morning links. I’m amazed I even remembered to show up and post them!

1921: Insulin was isolated by Canadians Dr. Frederick Grant Banting and Professor John James Richard Macleod. They were awarded The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1923.
1953: Armistice ends the Korean War. Not the same as peace.
1974: The first article of impeachment against Tricky Dick was passed. I remember this well. The adults around me couldn’t stop talking about the enormity of the alleged crimes. How far we have fallen since then.
2003: Bob Hope died at 100. I never thought he was very funny, but I have to give him props for being not very funny for a very long time.

I’m off for another cup of java. Have a terrific day and an even better weekend!
Dog named ‘Lucifer’ saves owner – seems like a plot to look like a hero. I’m on to Lucifer
It was even a burning house… now if the owner’s name was Damien it would be the beginning of a 1970s Exorcist rip-off movie.
The Omen, not The Exorcist.
It’s the 70’s Ted. Everybody is coked up, and nothing about this low-budget rip-off makes sense. Hell, it’s probably just a bigtime drug deal/money laundering scheme designed to look like a film production.
Polanski called and wants to direct… and the cast has a lot of 13 year old girls too…
He hung around in Hutchinson,
when he saw it was time for a change
He demanded his soul before pulling him out.
Need a new furry friend? – Honestly I was expecting something else… That being said, I live in an apartment so I would not get a dog.
My wife has already pointed out that we could go in on Sunday…
Speaking of Sunday…..
Leap at the Wheel has bullied Tundra and I into a Minnesoda Glib breakfast at Ike’s in downtown Mpls this Sunday at 10.
Hit me up at pope@jimbo.church for more details or to let us know to keep an eye out for you.
Honestly I was expecting something else…
Same. Although for this crowd, a wholesome link was a much better plot twist.
I would love to get another cat or even another pet. But my current cat, who loves people, hates other animal. She played a constant low-level stalking game with our other cat until the poor thing had a heart attack and died at age 6.
She played a constant low-level stalking game with our other cat until the poor thing had a heart attack and died at age 6.
That’s really playing the long game on pursuit predation, but I guess you can’t argue with results.
Only took a year. And the other cat – Noodle – was biting its own fur off. Tried to find a home for her but she died before I could find a safe place.
That really is actually kind of sad. Poor kitty. One of our cats when I was a kid was like that. He’d beat up the older cat constantly. We had him declawed, even though my parents are against it generally. But he persisted. We eventually had to get rid of the older cat. 6 or 7 years later we got a kitten and were really afraid the same thing was going to happen, but he never hurt that one once. He’d mellowed out quite a lot as he got older.
Our dog is similar. On our last trip, she tried to eat Riven’s Corgi, and barely tolerated Francisco d’Anconia’s hunting dogs, albeit with lots of snarling, snapping, and barking.
Humans she loves. Except for Bacon Magic.
Wanted to eat that delicious stuff, didn’t it?
We need more Bacon-Magic around here.
Similar to ours: loves people, especially children (she’s unbelievably patient and doesn’t react to ear pulling, etc.).
Other dogs: 60% indifferent, 20% “I love you!”, 20% “fight me, bro!”, with no apparent pattern to which dogs will end up in which tranche.
Though puppies are treated like human children – she’s extremely patient with their shenanigans.
Dog named ‘Lucifer’ saves owner
You’re saying he..

Owes his soul to the devil?
Well you just had to put a comment in the middle of mine didn’t you?
To me it seems you put your comments around mine.
Study finds surprisingly long stretches of celibacy. Mr. Lizard hardest hit. – they are strong salamanders who don’t need no man. Also, to be that guy, Salamanders are not lizards
#shepersisted
Well, we don’t have a Mr Salamander.
Like Mr. Lizard never looked across the way and said to himself, “I don’t normally go for the slimy ones, but in this case I’ll make an exception.”
That donkey has been spray painted. Whoever did that is a real jackass.
That’s nothing to bray about
He seems to be trying to buck responsibility.

Global Warming to blame.
Global warming is to blame for everything. Shit, I am waiting for them to blame obesity on it.

I’ve put on weight, and it’s been getting hotter for months. COINCIDENCE?
Well played there, sir.
Salamanders are the beta bitches of the galaxy

But did they have to paint white stripes or black stripes?
Thanks for saving me from having to find that image.
Painted jack-asses?
Scientists who study these amphibians and their relatives, which are also called mole salamanders, have theorized that the theft of sperm is part of what has kept the unisexuals around so long.
Hipsters crossed off the endangered species list.
I don’t know. Hipsters are pretty lazy. Of course, if there’s a government program that will steal the sperm for them….
Greece fires: Adelaide newspaper apologises for ‘absolutely disgusting’ cartoon

I mean it is kinda funny
I don’t see what is wrong with it….?
I guess the bucket brigade imagery implies that Greece is a bankrupt 3rd world shithole, that doesn’t have the capital, knowledge, resources, or basic moral imperative to stop a conflagration that is spreading across a country made up of thousands of islands surrounded by ocean?
Those Greeks sure are sensitive.
Not as sensitive as Trojans, though.
Ribbed for her pleasure?

I’m Greek on my mom’s side. These Greek cunts need to get over themselves.
drug tested (for which they practically do a strip search).
Go on ….
The woman doing the test told her, “Oh, honey, this is nothing. For some of the tests, we actually have to stand here and watch you pee. It is not the most fun aspect of my job.”
something something water games
I don’t get the validity of a drug test where the *don’t * watch you pee. Im not for drug tests, but validating its the subjects urine is kinda key.
I have heard that people cheat screenings by using purchased dried urine concentrate, diluted with tap water just before the “donation,” with hand warmers to keep the temp to body level. This is, I’m sure, just a rumor. No-one would ever really do that. Nope.
I really hope Nancy and Ron are frying painfully in Hell for this shit. My hatred for what they did to our society still burns intensely, especially because the damage has been so lasting. He was right in what he said, government IS the enemy, he was its general, and Nancy was happy to play Eva Braun. And of course, now that drug screening is a huge industry, it can never be rolled back. Fry, you fuckers, fry.
SP had to nearly strip, was searched thoroughly, and she got frisked to a level that would make TSA proud. So that’s probably just as effective as watching the squat.
There are better options for guys.
Pics or GTFO.
And they turn off the water and drop blue dye in the toilet.
The entire experience was bizarre.

To be honest, I’d be happy if I never have to read the word EXPERT in an article for the rest of my life.
My grandfather’s KGB was running circles around our intelligence agencies for the entire Cold War, so…
I mean how many governments have the CIA successfully installed?
Including LBJ?
Don’t forget Castro.
One of those was successful.
So, how many successful? One.
SP, knows how to sneak a nut punch in.
I was a mere high school student at the time but remember clearly how, before that point in time, I was considered almost beyond the pale to make jokes at the expense of the president and high officials. That line was crossed most probably due to how people viewed the transgressions of Nixon et al.
The linked story in that particular line of text had nothing to do with Nixon.

The NYT finds it incomprehensible that someone would elevate principles over principals.
Wow. What a fucking asshat.
Birkenstocks? Now them’s fighting words.
No shit. I am strictly a Choco’s man.
Xeroshoes huaraches for me.
I buy the el cheapo foam and rubber flip-flops from the drug store, gas station, or taco stand. Florida man style.
If you can kick somebody’s ass while wearing them, you are ready to leave the temple and become a full Florida Man, Grasshopper.
Straps on Docs to back Scruffy up.
The only place I DON’T wear my Birks is to church and even that decision makes me pause a little.
Unremitting plantar fasciitis and every cure known to man to avoid wearing expensive AND ugly shoes will force you into a corner.
I wear Birks all the time, even during winter. But they’re not the sandal version, instead it’s a covered shoe with the same cork insoles.
They look a little dorky compared to my ol’ Doc Martens, but my foot pain is greatly reduced so I’m not hobbling around like an old man.
Yes, I have the clogs for winter and thick socks. Best snow/ice soles I’ve ever had. My next purchase will be the shearling-lined clogs.
“…but my foot pain is greatly reduced so I’m not hobbling around like an old man.”
Not medical advice, but I used to have sore/stiff feet for about the 1st hour after waking. A friend recommended taking MSM. I was very skeptical, but damn my feet feel great. No soreness/stiffness.
Doctor’s Best MSM Powder with OptiMSM, Non-GMO, Vegan, Gluten Free, Soy Free, 250 Grams https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BD4DIQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_gUYwBb6AF89F4
Interesting. Thanks!
I switched to barefoot/minimalist shoes about five years ago and that really squared my foot/ankle/hip issues away. It takes some tome to adjust, but they are fantastic.
I’ll give that a try – I was, before the birks, hobbling around in the mornings until the old feet tendons/muscles loosened up.
Sandals were good enough for Jesus.
Jesus better not be wearing sandals when he’s mowing my lawn, trimming hedges. Better be going steel toed boots.
Oh, you meant Jesus.
*polite applause*
Only Asics for tennies. What I wear to work is made by Sperry. One of my female co-workers call them boat shoes, or something like that. I don’t know, I like them. Around the house I wear my Uggs slippers, so comfy.
Oh sandals, I have a lot of them, flip flops galore. I don’t wear them here. There’s no sand but there are creepy crawly stuff like spiders and snakes. I like my feel a little more protected than that.
Boat shoes is the generic term for Sperries. It’s not derogatory. (the shoes originally came from the yachting community)
I need to get some no show socks and some Sperries. I like them but they stink to high heavens if I wear them without socks.
My daily work loafers are Penguins. I wear brooks running shoes most other places. Adidas and Babolat tennis shoes (legit tennis shoes for when I play tennis). Columbia boots or brooks trail shoes for hiking.
I’m a big proponent of those no-show socks, I’ve got a bunch of these. Good for all summer footwear.
It’s the NYT. You can’t expect better from that bunch of cloistered twits.

Birkenstocks? We ain’t hippies, motherfucker. I quote the wise words of Supernova here: “Fuck you, you piece of shit hippie, we’re gonna kick your ass.” Or the gospel of Guttermouth:
“Dancing round in circles, staring at the sky
Spending hours on the corner trying to catch a ride
Your girlfriend is filthy and stoned out of her mind
And she hasn’t had a shower since 1969

Don’t you fucking breathe on me, go get yourself a mint
Frisbee playing hitchickers are lame
Godammned hippies always smell like shit piss hemp and eggs

Nothing I hate more than dirty hairy chicks
Only things that like em are gnats fleas and ticks
Always out to lunch, always so confused,

Hippies
What a fucking asshat.
Hey now.
Birkenstock-wearing devotees.
I’ve never owned a pair and hate wearing sandals in general. I’ve always been a Sambas guy, classic look and I don’t have to think hard about what to buy once they wear out.
We need Gilmore to tell us the proper Libertarian footwear.
my instinct says, “Frye Boots”
*the frye company manufactured boots for both sides* of the US civil war. they’re extremely well made.
**also have women’s varieties.
(*’trade w/ all, alliance w/ none!)
for sneakers, i’d probably go with Stan Smiths or Sambas for their timelessness, and universal applicability. (chucks kind of suck, tbh)
I wasn’t sure if I was witnessing the dawn of a coming apocalypse when Cole-Hahn changed the soles of their flagship Oxfords from leather to synthetics. I am a hard-core, black leather, spit-shined Oxford wearing mother-fcuker – accept no substitute. When Cole-Hahn abandoned me I was shaken to the core.
I like my various pairs of Cole-Haans, but you may have to look to someplace like Allen Edmonds for proper leather soles. I have also heard good things about Alden though, for a company based in Mass, they’re surprisingly hard to find locally.
A pair of bespoke shoes is on my bucket list.
He isnt anyone’s wingman. Paul is truly principled thus causing complete confusion to the MSM.
But, he wants to legalize drugs!
2003: Bob Hope died at 100. I never thought he was very funny, but I have to give him props for being not very funny for a very long time.
My Favorite Brunette was pretty good.
Early Bob Hope movies aren’t bad.
Montgomery: “When a person dies and is buried, its seems there are certain voodoo priests who … who have the power to bring him back to life.”
Carter: “How horrible!”
Montgomery: “It’s worse than horrible because a zombie has no will of his own. You see them sometimes walking around blindly with dead eyes, following orders, not knowing what they do, not caring.”
(Bob Hope) Lawrence: “You mean like Democrats?”
Also, Woody Allen used to write for Bob Hope.
Honestly, all I know of Bob Hope in movies was his cameo in Spies Like Us. “Doctor, doctor…..glad I’m not sick”
This is how they write?
They’re experts, Dude.
EXPERTS.
And IT IS how they write, all of the time, every time. Almost everyone, the overwhelming majority! Meaning almost everyone in the NYT cube farm circus. Can you imagine being around those people 8 hours a day?
It would be fun to make them cry.
Garda alarm as child sex dolls uncovered in searches of 31 premises for child porn
hahaha how is this even real hahaha it’s a doll nigga hahaha just walk away like nigga close your eyes hahaha
I hate the fact I need to defend pedophiles, but for fucks sake. Let them have their fuck dolls, written porn, and fake images. No one is getting hurt there. Prosecute the hell out of those who make the child porn though.
There should be a simple rule of thumb here – were anyone’s rights violated by making it? Was anyone harmed? If not…..then who cares?
I always thought if they had dolls and anime, maybe they’d be less likely to attack a child.
Or could it make them want to act out more?
I don’t know, but arresting them for things that don’t involve real children seems absurd.
arresting them for things that don’t involve real children seems absurd
You misspelled “is.”
Fair enough
“The victim was transported to Mount Sinai hospital, at last check, she delivered a healthy baby,” Miami Beach police spokesman Ernesto Rodriguez said in an e-mail.
He delivered that baby, practically. A commendation is coming.
Just a Dave Weigel sighting. Ya know, you never hear anyone say “nice guy, that Dave Weigel”.
Well a prerequisite is for him to actually be a nice guy.
I still think anyone who approved his hiring at Reason should have been fired.
Why? He provided clicks and entertainment
It was as if the Daily Worker had hired Milton Friedman.

So, typical for TOS?
I hope WaPo hires STEVE SMITH as well.

Increasing and Diminishing Returns – Africa’s Opportunity to Develop
https://developingeconomics.org/2018/07/26/increasing-and-diminishing-returns-africas-opportunity-to-develop/
Today around 900 million people on the planet do not have enough food. Some of these will try to move to other countries where they can find work and better possibilities for feeding their children. The only meaningful way to «help the migrants where they are» is to change the world trade policy, making it possible for African nations to follow the same path to industrialisation that all wealthy nations have followed. The wave of migration creates new demand for a theory that has been there from 1613 (with Antonio Serra), but which was neglected during the Cold War ideological fights. Trade agreements should no longer make it impossible to create jobs in increasing returns industries in Africa.
I find this kinda dubious. So basically protectionism and taxing resources/agriculture to subsidies industry if I understand correctly. My first issue is that conditions are now different then in the 17th-18th century so you would not expect the same path for Africa as for Europe. Also it is a matter of institutions, rule of law and such which may be more important than protectionism. If you want to go the way of statist development, you would do better to look at countries that grew after 1950 than 1750…
Africa’s opportunity to develop. That has been there for 15,000 years.
Hold y our breath, I dare you.
All of the productive ones walked away about 100,000 years ago, apparently.
LIAR!
WHAT ABOUT WAKANDA????
BURN!!1eleventy!!
Of course Africa’s problems have nothing to do with the likes of Idi Amin, Robert Mugabe, and the current fucksticks about to ruin what’s left of anything good in South Africa. It’s everyone else’s fault. Anyway, what is the universal law named that Africa is not allowed to develop and trade and who is enforcing that rule?
Point is the last thing they need is property rights and somewhat free markets. As long as the current corrupt incompetent leaders do the right protectionist tax and spend policy, Utopia.
Those ideas are alien to them. Also many of them despise them as ‘white’.
Property rights are aggression!
If you’re going to SF, don’t forget to pull that needle out of your ass.
If you’re going to San Francisco
Be sure to
wear some flowers in your hairpull the needles out of your assIf you’re going to San Francisco
You’re gonna meet some
gentlehomeless people thereYou get me. Wanna join my commune?
I bet your “commune” is just like that sex cult they had that Allison Mack from Smallville running…
Except it’s just gonna be the two of em.
Ok I lol’d.
That reminds me of my first trip to Vegas, where I had to sign a hotel room contract stating that I would not leave used hypodermic needles or syringes in my bedsheets.
Lol, were you at the El Cortez?
The Riviera, for the first and last time
Well, definitely for the last. They blew it up a couple years to make way for the expanded convention center.
Hah! I just stayed at the El Cortez in December when I went out to see the Misfits. I spent $600 on the airfare so I needed a hotel at crackhouse prices, and El Cortez delivered!
The El Cortez has been delivering the authentic crackhouse experience for decades.
Honestly, it wasn’t that bad – I’ve stayed in much worse hotels.
Now, granted, that probably says much more about me than it does the El Cortez…..
To be fair they’ve renovated the place twice since I was last down there, and I think the Tony Hsieh downtown revitalization boondoggle drove out some of the crackheads and prostitutes. I think it was summer of ’06 when I was living in the city and a couple of my acquaintances from back home decided to visit on a low budget and grabbed a room there. If you can imagine some 19 year old kids who grew up in the sticks getting offered meth in the hotel lobby and losing 100 bucks to a 3 card monte scam within their first couple hours of arriving…
It definitely had a seedy feel to it – ain’t no high rollers hanging around that casino, and walking a couple of blocks to buy smokes at the 7-11 took me by not one but two apparent hobo encampments.
On the other hand, though, there was an excellent Thai restaurant right across the street.
Stayed at the 4 Queens for $35 an night. No bedbugs, clean, and $5 black jack.
“But thank God there are no plastic straws in any of the cars”
kek
I mean if I ever make it to the states San Francisco was one of my go to places, but at this rate I may give it a pass
I’d rather visit Minot, ND personally.
SF seems like one of the places in the US with a decent climate although a bit on the hot side in summer
SF is known for being cold in the summer, at night.
Really? Sounds great. Excepting for all the mess. And I assume the high real estate prices. And the pretentious inhabitants.
And the aggressive homeless population, and the piss and shit everywhere, and the expense, it’s not a bad place. It’s the only town where I had a women scream at me that she would, “Suck the white off my dick!”
Did she?
The saying, falsely attributed to Mark Twain, is “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco”.
It’s kinda true for early summer, because the marine inversion pulls the cold air off the ocean, making June typically cold and damp, probably the shittiest month there.
Meh, I’d take sunny socal any day. SF is pretty fucking dreary for half the year. The reason I’d avoid visiting is more to do with it being an open air lunatic asylum though.
“The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco”
― Mark Twain
If you were looking for a great climate in the US, the obvious choice would be Hawaii – temperate day and night, summer and winter. Otherwise, the rule of thumb is to visit the South in the winter and the North in the summer and you should be fine.
I once said I would be happy living in Atlanta in the summer and Madison in the winter (to pick two places I have lived).
I guess that’s why I settled back in the Ohio Valley – worst of all worlds! Plus all the allergies!
Where in the Ohio Valley?
I’m originally from Wheeling and moved to West Alexander when I was 13.
I am originally from Louisville and was there until 2014, but live in Bowling Green (KY) now.
I just got back from HI – it was steamier than anticipated (vog-related, perhaps). Stupid expensive too (a hearty FU to your 10.25% “transient accommodations tax”).
San Diego has awesome weather, in my admittedly limited experience.
That’s what I always heard air force guys say.
“Why not Minot!”
Freezin’s the reason! (I knew a guy who had family there; he never got tired of that joke)
If you’re going to Cali, there are many more interesting places to see, avoid the bay area, it’s a shithole.
This is exactly how every hippie dream ends – less flower children and much more Up Against the Wall Motherfuckers.

A knock down drag out fight between assholes.
Lawyer asshole who gave money to revered Minnesoda college is mad because the money is not being used as he stipulated when he gave the money.
School: hold on dude. Technically it was never your money to begin with. And besides you gave it to us. Fuck off.
Meh. I guess it depends om the paper trail…
” hadn’t written anything “worthy of submission.”
“This student did not fulfill the research project with a substantive paper,” Lindmark wrote, “but was paid his $7,000 summer stipend from the endowment fund anyway.””
And conservatives say academic work is soft, clearly you can’t live off of 7000 for a whole summer. This kid has been starved by the institution.
Let me guess, he set up the funds to be sent directly to the school to avoid paying income tax on the amounts.
I visited St. John’s in Santa Fe in ~2004ish thinking I might get my undergrad there. This was when I still had aspirations. Mom was bullish on the idea, despite the fact that we had no money. Oh, what naive people we were.
The son of a family friend attended maybe eight years later, wound up with a huge chunk of debt, and is now, afaik, trying to publish as a freelance writer in Seattle. Follow your dreams, I guess, if you dream of being virtually unemployed with a mortgage-worth of non-dischargeable debt.
Beats an MFA in puppetry I suppose.
Man. Fridays are the best. SP links, work from home, weekend coming up, I found out the money clip I have (and was thinking of picking up a spare) now has some awesome etched ones, and I’m not wearing pants. The afternoon meeting still sucks though.
The fiberglass clips are great. They don’t set off the metal detectors so you don’t have to hand them over to anyone at airport security.
and I’m not wearing pants.
A kilt worn in the Scottish tradition?
You’re not wearing any pants yet have a money clip. Talk about a money shot.
Dont ask where he keeps it.
On my dresser. I’m at home, I don’t need cash to wander around my house yet.

Freaky Friday: What Not To Do
Not textbook way to shoot into your hand.
Uffda. See? I was just shaking my head at the hoops SP has to jump through and wondering why people get so fixated on credentials. Then a guy watches a clip like that and automatically thinks, “there must be some test we could have required before we let that guy get a hold of a shootin iron”.
Just think of it as one of life’s pop quizzes.
There is a test he took it and failed it.
Looks to me like he installed a laser site, and fixated on the beam not working.
Dum, de dum-dumb…dumb!
That makes sense in a dumb way
What was the intended outcome there? Like, best case scenario, how did that end?
I particularly enjoyed seeing the blood dripping on the floor. Now that is authentic stupidity.
He wins this year’s Halloween costume contest when he goes as Jesus.

Look, it is a work in progress. Just be patient.
Hopefully it’ll be the same hand.
I think we saw the best case scenario. One dumbass gets injured, and no one else does.
Agree.

Hey, I have a package from ACME here…I don’t remember ordering rocket skates?
What was the other guy doing?
How can you watch someone do that and not try to stop them?
*Has flashback to being weapons instructor watching dumb PFC’s*
OT: I’ve been watching the old crime/detective series Cannon which an an overweight William Conrad huffing and puffing. I keep waiting for him to keel over but instead it’s hand-to-hand combat for him. Also a good glimpse of California in the early 70s. And Fords. So many, many Fords (since they provided the cars for the series).
Bonus: his 1971 car phone, that beeps the horn if there is an incoming call.
William Conrad was Matt Dillon on the radio version Gunsmoke. All kinds of awesome, much darker and brutal version of the TV show.
No love for Jake and the (appropriately titled) Fatman ?
Relevant.
I love those old ’70s detective shows. I used to watch Kojak and Ironside on Retro TV all the time.
SP, you live in Chicago. Can’t you just bribe the right person and get your credential?
A friend of mine who lived in Chicago for a while tells me how he and some of the other lawyers who worked in the same office would pay off a cop so that they could park in a loading zone behind the building all day. He said it was cheaper than legit parking contract and way more convenient.
After reading about your travails, I for sure would look for the right palm to grease.
Reagan’s Son: Trump’s Base Would Pick Putin Over Any Democrat As U.S. President
The son of former President Ronald Reagan believes Donald Trump’s political base is so consumed by hatred for the Democrats that they would vote for Vladimir Putin to be America’s president instead of virtually any member of that party.
“They really aren’t in touch with reality. The most important thing to them [is that Trump] seems to hate the same people that they hate,” Ron Reagan told Chris Matthews on MSNBC’s “Hardball” on Thursday. “That’s the real Trump derangement syndrome.”
On the other hand, they like the people Trump likes, Reagan said. Russian President Putin’s popularity is rising, he noted.
“If it was left just up to Trump’s base, they would elect Vladimir Putin as president of the United States over virtually anybody with a D after their name,” he added. “If Trump seems to love Putin, they’ll love Putin, too.”
A revved-up Matthews groused that if President Barack Obama had committed an antic like one of Trump’s, he “would have been keelhauled.”
Reagan responded: “You’re absolutely right. No previous president could have gotten away with even a tenth of the things that Donald Trump has.”
There is someone who is not in touch with reality, but it is not the average Trump supporter.
I’m guessing it’s the ballerina, not the adopted one.
I didn’t even know Reagan had a kid until this popped up.
Son of former republican president, that definitely qualifies him to speak on the mental state of half the nation.
When I lived in Memphis, Amy Carter was going to art school there and she was always protesting something that got her in the paper.
Come to think of it, why hasn’t CNN given her a show and paid her $$$$ even if she fails to show up?
I mean Putin does get shit done
I was thinking that. If he could be held to the Constitution, he would likely make a decent president bc of his no-bullshit ways.
Being held to constitution kinda inhibits the whole “getting things done”. Thanks but ive had my fill of presidents who “get things done”.
As libertarians we do not want presidents to get things done. But the majority of people do. Cause some on should totes do something. There ought to be a law, after all
I was thinking more in the sense of Calvin Coolidge. As in, do the job of office as described, nothing more, nothing less.
If the Constitution meant a damn thing anymore …
The left is yelling about all the shit Trump is doing by executive fiat. But it’s only that way because decades of Presidents (ESPECIALLY Obama) have grabbed power from the Congress (pen and phone, people!), which has been allowed by the people, the courts and by Congress for some absurd reason.
I’d be happy about that if I didn’t know that the next time a (D) is in office they’d stop whining about it and start demanding the executive be given even more power.
The President should have so little power that he can’t do a thing without the approval of Congress.
The President should have so little power that he can’t do a thing without the approval of Congress.
IOW, execute the laws as written.
With regard to Trump though, lefties are only upset that it is him and not “their” guy doing anything be executive fiat, even when he is simply undoing by executive fiat something that was done by executive fiat in the first place. And somehow a court managed to stop a certain instance of that. The Law: how does it work, again?
I’m pretty sure that’s what I said?
Just agreeing with you.
You would think that they would take this as a sign that DC has lost touch with the rest of the country and should reverse course before something really bad happens, but I think further polarization and political violence are probably coming first.
Who isn’t in touch with reality?
At least Putin has not reinstalled socialism yet by starving half the country on purpose, like Lenin did. That makes him at least somewhat an improvement over US democrats, who admire people like Lenin, Marx, and Stalin. No one needs more than zero choices in food.
Putin doesn’t want to back to bread lines.
Bernie says they are a good thing.
Toby Young’s own story about being tried and executed in the media for silly shit he did decades ago.
Well maybe he should stop alienating people
I see the sanctimonious left is invading the comments in Quillette now too. At least they’re outnumbered, for the moment.

Country star Eric Church blames NRA and gun lobbyists for Las Vegas mass shooting
Christ, what an asshole.
Fuck off, Eric.
Welp, there goes his career.
Way to know your audience, asshole.
He shouldn’t worry. There’s always NPR.
I’m sure he and the Dixie Chicks can have a European Comeback Tour
The Dixie Chicks put a nail in their coffin, but their country career was already fading. Poor album sales, move into a pop-ish direction before that.
Hah, first thing I thought too – nothing like dousing your career in kerosene and lighting a match.
I think TDS is real and it does damage the brain.
Specifically, what did the NRA do?
How could we have stopped the Vegas shooter?
And then there’s this gem:
“The gun-show [loophole] would not exist if it weren’t for the NRA”
I guess he took his stupid pill that morning and forgot who the Dixie Chicks are.
“Specifically, what did the NRA do?”
They don’t really do much if you ask my opinion. But they are the left’s convenient strawman to build and knock down. Because debating real 2nd amendment rights advocates will not go well for them.
I listened to Micheal Malice interview Cody Wilson and I agreed with them when they described the NRA as the moderate gun group.
The Dixie who?
Loophole is whatever remains of a legal method to acquire & keep firearms after the last gun grabbers’ restrictions.
Fuck you Church, background checks didn’t exist nationwide before 1993. You want to get rid of the gun show loophole? Fine. No more background check requirements for FFLs. Twenty five years of unconstitutional restrictions is enough.
I’ll ‘fess up. I like the Dixie Chicks and still listen to their songs.
Trying to keep that wall between the art and the artist is difficult sometimes, though.
This fuckhole sung the praises of Bruce Springsteen, why is this shocking
Someone does not know their audience/market.
Pretty sure his market is suburban soccer moms and their douchebag husbands.
“But we could have stopped the guy in Vegas.”
How so? The same way Mexican drug gangs are stopped from having high capacity assault clips with the thing that goes up?

the finest minds, contemplating the biggest problems
Ryan: Trump just made $40 million at his hotel that foreign dignitaries are staying in. Tax cuts that go to the same people who fund the Republican political apparatus and go to him directly. His refusal to turn over his tax returns while coddling Vladimir Putin. Business interests in Russia, China. The examples are endless.
We need to fix it by pushing public financing of our elections and getting the money out of politics. This is a new phrase I just came up with: “We need to drain the swamp.”
Bruni: Are those offenses you mention — and many others — ample grounds for impeachment? Should Democrats be talking more bluntly about that and be poised to act quickly if they reclaim the House majority?
Government funding for elections is how we’ll get money out of politics, children. It will usher in a golden age of honest, selfless service and accountability. All we have to do is impeach that traitorous despotic crook who stole our nation’s soul.
Didn’t Herself outspend Trump by something like 3 or 4 to 1?
shhh……
But that was “clean” and “good” money. Not the evil cash Trump slung around…
Hillary and allies spent around double what Trump and allies spent, and I do believe the margins between the official campaign expenditures was close to what you mention.
And having business interests around the globe and keeping your tax returns private are now impeachable offenses? Really?
The Democrats might want to think twice about setting the bar that low.
“Tax cuts that go to the same people who fund the Republican political apparatus and go to him directly”
Or when unions get strengthened by the same politicians they donate to.
Well, the part that is hilarious about that statement is that all these blue state tax and spend havens seem to all be pissed at this bill because the really rich that constantly prog hard and before the Trump tax change could write off their massive tax bill from the state off their fed tax filings, are now trying their best to invalidate that tax bill that really stuck it to these rich people they hate, all because these rich people that were leftists and financing these useless tax and spend states, will now move to a different state with less taxes. But hey, that tax bill was to help rich republicans,….
Sure.
pushing public financing of our elections
Definitely no first amendment problem there.
getting the money out of politics
Wasn’t Trump outspent by 2-3:1? (likewise with Romney and McCain I think…)
Republicans enjoy a multiplier effect; their dark monies spend 5x as fast with 10x the effect as Dem’s, because Democrats are such sticklers for campaign finance laws.
Of course, Republicans could learn a thing or two from Russians. Russian money is so effective, a couple hundred thousand dollars in Facebook ads purchased after the election can retroactively swing it.
Question: Would you rather be SP’s study buddy and have to go through the same regulatory nightmare, OR would you want to be assigned to the committee working on Minneapolis’ comprehensive plan?
My first pick would be to ask if I could go off the menu and instead sit on a park bench and paddle my nuts with a wooden spoon. If that was denied, I’d go with SP. At least of the end of that shitstorm, you’d have something useful and tangible (the cert). Putting together a plan to control every aspect of the city between now and 2040? And have to talk to other people who actually think it can be done? Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.
Think of sitting in a room with people who think you can actually do this:
*slams head on desk*
The other day I put my odds of leaving Minne in the next 10 years at 50-50. I’m now at about 90-10.
I actually feel bad for Heather. She has the classic lines of the Norwegian farm wife I grew up with, but I’m sure she is getting all sorts of unwanted praise for being “trans” these days.
“I’m not trans, asshole! I’m just a large mannish looking woman. Wait, how much of a raise is there that goes along with those additional victim points?”
Ugh! And I missed the best part of the quote:
The horror!!
Just cross the border into Iowa.
It’s a good life.
Almost makes me wish for the next Ice Age sooner rather than later.
I’m sorry. But a glacial ice sheet is not mentioned in the city plan so it cannot happen.
Besides I’m sure the bike lanes we are building will allow the population to flee safely in the event of any emergency.
*flash forward a century: industrial countries begin dumping superfluous carbon into the atmosphere in a bid to stave off projected cooling*
Ironically, they’ll still get it wrong and still won’t have any impact.
I would imagine those meetings would be on par with the Paris Climate Accord shit. Everyone neighborhood, business group, community action committee trying to weasel in to get some dedicated statement about how their pet cause should have funding directed to it.
Woah woah there “letting the market dictate” you can’t be having builders and renters determine by themselves how much off street parking they want to support.
Really though, I think they are hoping that builders cheap out and don’t have off street parking at all then everyone will walk, ride bikes, and take public transit. *tosses flowers in the air*
If a developer or building owner is stupid enough to not build parking in places like Texas and Minnisoda, they’ll soon be selling their property at a huge loss.
Seriously, what kind of retarded fuck stick thinks we can turn places that can have 100 days of 100+ temps in any given year or 6 months of winter into “walkable neighborhoods”?
I’ll take the committee. Spending all day building a scale Lego-model and coming up with ways to blow through other people’s money while earning a couple hundred grand a year is fun.
Art Notes
There are too many artists, most of them crap
Helen Dale
https://www.spectator.co.uk/2018/07/art-notes-3/
Well, I’ve decided to go public with one of my unpopular opinions.
There are too many artists, too many people who want to be artists, most of them aren’t very good, and schools should focus on inculcating self-discipline rather than dopey ‘all must have prizes’ creativity.
Most people are only ever going to be drones. Telling them because they starred in the high school musical or wrote the best poem in the school magazine means they’re going to make it as an actor or writer is a monstrous lie that sets them up for disappointment.
…
That is why – in these modern ‘attention economy’ times – publishing houses insist on using identity politics to try to ‘move the merch’. And you read that right – intersectional feminism and mandated racial diversity are marketing and branding strategies, not politics. That’s why they’re so light on policy solutions, and what policies they do propose are routinely based on pseudoscience.
Art is not about skill, it’s about the political statement. Or at least that the way it’s been for the last hundred years. Now, with Twitter and Facebook, we’re all artists.
Épater la bourgeoisie was the start of the rot. Since then far too many artists have been convinced that they have a social obligation to force their unexamined, boiler plate left-wing views on the rest of us.
I collect art – usually some inexpensive stuff – but I’ve been known to throw a few hundred dollars at a painting. My wife and I have also been eying a signed Calder piece but a few thousand dollars is just a little more than I want to spend right now. Anyhoo – art is subjective ‘n’ all that, but, based on the dreck I see, the number of starving artists out there must be sky high.
My wife bought a Calder about 30 years ago for $150.

Another gem:
Remember, the thread is about socialized medicine, i.e. getting something for less than you pay in.
Things that will not happen in 20-40 years: these same people graciously accepting 50% cuts to their own SS benefits.
I will now stop responding to myself.
socialized medicine helps level the playing field and makes small business more competitive with big business
Odd, then, that countries with socialized medicine aren’t full of small businesses and entrepreneurial activity, isn’t it?

Switzerland is the 4th richest country on the planet w/ a steady tax rate over the last 3 decades. Paying for it ISNT hard if, for example, you don’t have a military that costs more per capita than the 20 next countries on the list combined. For example. It’s also about budgeting
I bet this same motherfucker was losing his shit when there were reports of Trump wanting to pull out of NATO.
Switzerland spreads out their military cost by expecting every able-bodied adult male citizen to be ready to take up arms in defense of the country. The U.S.’s Selective Service system doesn’t compare (although the pre-modern militia did). Even if you don’t believe Europe enjoys the protective umbrella of the U.S. military, the states in Europe that are least dysfunctional right now are those that take their military seriously*. That’s not an endorsement of militarism, but there is something to be said for a mentality of being prepared.
* = I don’t know that this goes both ways (e.g. Belarus probably takes its military quite seriously but is highly dysfunctional, at least from the perspective of liberal democracy), and nailing down what, exactly, taking the military seriously means would probably be tricky, to say the least.

That means zoning the city in a way that makes goods and services and jobs more readily accessible in more parts of the city. At the same time, planners want to guide the bulk of new housing and employment opportunities to areas with reliable transit routes.
Sounds legit.
“If you allow density, and you regulate it for affordability, you will get more affordability.”
Zombie Nixon approves.
Light a candle draw a pentagram and say affordability thrice while spinning withershins
Is that local gypsy magic?
No this is good wholesome Romanian magic not that weird gypsy stuff…
What is great is that when the real estate bubble pops again, the same people who are demanding affordability will demand that the bubble get re-inflated stat. They won’t see it as a great leap forward in affordability.
When it crashed in 2008, I pointed out to a lot of my proggie friends that housing was way more affordable. They were not amused as they watched their home values crash. Like most of their hobby horses, they mean other people should have to sacrifice so that people can buy houses at below market values.
The rent in the slums is always cheap. You just can’t afford to live there.
Climate change driven by humans made heatwave ‘twice as likely’
Whatever your position on CAGW these pseudo-statistical claims are meaningless. twice as likely my ass
So they made up some numbers and used them to prove their point?
Besides, I thought that weather wasn’t climate? Or is that only true in the winter?
It’s whatever they want it to be, when they want it to be. Like the rules of what is PC and what is not.
But how can this interpreted through a feminist viewpoint? That’s the one that matters.
So Joe Bastardi is one of the head meteorologists at weatherbell.com, which is an excellent source that I pay $25/month for (to be able to look at the weather models during hurricane season, mostly). He’s like me in his beliefs – the climate is changing somewhat, it might have something to do with humans, but so much of it is overblown.
Anyways, here’s his latest, on the Euro heat wave. Sorry, can’t embed the pictures.
Some of the drop in Atlantic sea surface temperatures is because there’s been so much snow in Greenland (probably due to global warming!)
Two of the more important pics from there
https://imgur.com/a/YUP14qp
The bottom pic is the sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic (vs 1981-2010 average) in 2017. The top pic is 2018. An incredible amount of … cooling, except for the one strip going to England.
The color scale makes it a little hard to tell which is greater in magnitude, the cooling or the warming. Although it does still drive home the point that the temperature has changed non-uniformly. Also the guy could use an editor.

Overland Park officers wrote false tickets
Here’s a thought. Don’t put pressure on cops to steal money from the people and allow them to hand out warnings.
I hate to say it, but maybe the cop was cutting them some slack instead of giving them moving violations. Maybe.
I’ve had cops write me fake tickets for violations without points rather than speeding tickets which I would have to fight in court. I just pay the $50 nuisance fee.
My experience with cops in the US is about 30% cool guys just doing their jobs, 30% semi fuckheads that would leave you alone if you didn’t cause trouble, 30% power hungry losers and 10% total psychos.
99% guys who will look the other way when the total psychos act out.
30% cool guys just doing their jobs
A shame their jobs don’t include enforcing laws against other cops, then.
On my first speeding ticket, the cop wrote it for ten over the speed limit rather than the clocked speed. Saved quite a bit off the potential fine.
I’ve had a NJ State Trooper pull me over for 82 in a 55 and just give me a ticket for a seat belt violation and tell me to slow down. I don’t think that’s something to complain about.
Maps reveal scale of economic devastation in 14th century Ireland
https://www.irishtimes.com/news/ireland/irish-news/maps-reveal-scale-of-economic-devastation-in-14th-century-ireland-1.3576962
The full extent to which famine and conflict devastated Ireland in the early 14th century has been revealed for the first time.
Dublin lost more than two-thirds, Kilkenny and its hinterland half and Cork a third of its wealth following the invasion of Ireland by Edward Bruce of Scotland in 1315.
Bruce invaded Ireland on behalf of his brother, Robert the Bruce, to drive the Norman settlers out of Ireland. The invasion set off a vicious proxy conflict between the Scots and the English with the Irish natives lining up on both sides.
I did not see any maps but maybe others have more luck
English settlers? They mean Welsh-Norman, I guess. Though Robert de Brus and his brother were also Normans.
I made the links brighter with developer tools so I could actually see what was linked in the text of the article, but they’re all just links to “topics” on the Irish Times website. Although, they helpfully added their tagline at the bottom: “Facts have no agenda. Real news has value.”

My final litter of GSD pups has parvo. I’m really pissed/sad about it. I keep a clean house/yard and the pups were vaccinated at six weeks old. Parents are fully vaccinated of course.
The only thing I can think of is that they were exposed to it at their vet check at 5 weeks old before getting the vax. Also, the mom was freaking out about something that went around our chicken tractor during the night. I’m wondering if a fox or raccoon came and shed it in the yard.
Two seem to be in great shape but two aren’t doing so well. Time for around the clock gatorade, pedialyte, pepto bismol, and probiotics.
That sucks. The fucking virus lives forever, too.
I hope they pull through.
Thank you. I’m thinking the vaccine did at least mitigate how bad it was.
Have you been following that Musk/Montana Skeptic link you provided?
Yep. Here’s the latest.
Elon is feeling the pressure. Cue the SpaceX/Tesla merger in 3,2,1…
Thanks for sending these links. Montana Skeptic clearly seems to be a professional (he provides disclaimers on his posts re: Tesla and other investments). From his bio: I manage a $1B+ portfolio for a family office. Our investments include bonds, equities, hedge funds, and private investments with a wide geographical and asset class dispersion.
Musk phones his employer, a professional investment-related firm, and threatened legal action. Unclear whether Montana Skeptic, even using a pseudonym, violated any terms of employment and/or whether legal action by Musk would be warranted. Musk has been openly critical of the short sellers (Montana Skeptic’s disclaimer states I/We short Tesla).
I’m not a Musk apologist, but this isn’t clear-cut in my opinion.
Sure seems like a thin-skinned little bitch to me. Bad precedent, regardless.
Agree with the first statement, not clear on the second since I don’t know whether Montana Skeptic was literally trying to use a public site to push down Tesla stock price if he and his firm are short sellers.

TRUMP IS WRECKING THE PLACE, IMPEACH IMPEACH! MUH DEMOCRACY!
all from Obama’s groundwork!
All I know is that what goes up must come down and the last time the market came down we got Obama. From these heights, who knows what’s going to fall out of the sky.
I don’t know about that. When’s the last time the corporate tax rate was reduced to 21%? Just asking because I don’t remember it. But then again, Shreek said that Obama was the most business friendly president of all time, so it was probably 0% during his reign, they didn’t build that. Then Trump increased the rate to 39% on his first day, just so he could say he reduced it after. Tricky Trumpy, like Tricky Dicky, only with moar tricky.
Longest expansion in history, IIRC and FF rate at near zero. It’s gotta contract sometime.
Longest expansion in history, IIRC
One of those “technically true, but…” type of statistics. GDP growth has been anemic by historical standards and attributable entirely to growth in public sector spending.
Growth in public sector spending is not a sign of good things to come. Perhaps all the pent up energy is being released by regulatory/tax easing. Perhaps. I’m just not going to be all rah, rah on the economy while the debt is this high and the monetary policy is this loose. Looks like short term boost at the expense of long term growth just like we saw with Clinton, Dubya and Obama.
At this point that seems to be the only arrow left in their quiver Straff. If they actually decided to fix that debt, the world would implode. I am not saying I agree with this shit or like it, but the reality is that we passed the point of no return a long time ago, and at this point the thing is nothing but a giant scam that will keep going until it simply can’t go anymore. The difference is that at least in this scenario we have now, I am not getting fucked over thrice, but only twice.
Absolutely, I’m on the same page. The real economy is very much not okay still, despite official “full employment” (with lower labor force participation…) and record-long GDP growth because the fundamentals underlying those aggregated metrics are shitty. As usual the neo-Keynesian econometric sluts can’t see the trees for the forest.
It’s annoying because we know what’s coming. Sometime in the near future we’ll get another financial crisis, bond or dollar, and it’ll be blamed on the “capitalist” Trumpian policies. If we’re seeing this much love for socialism during the upswing, how much more will we see in the downswing?
I hate to piss on our cornflakes, but I am willing to bet that the next crisis – just like the one that led to Obama – will be instigated by the democrats so they can sell socialism. Unfortunately, there is nothing I see that can prevent that. Fiscal responsibility will never happen in today’s world. And I am sad to say I am almost resigned to that.
I don’t believe that this love for Socialism has a anything to do with the economy. The people loving socialism are for the most part, just out of or still in college or high school and they have been indoctrinated into this most of their lives. They don’t know shit about economy or markets and don’t care. They’re all about ‘Wow, free stuff! That sounds great, how can anyone be against it!?’. People who know better are not going to turn into commies if there’s a downturn in the market, which of course does happen periodically and probably always will happen. I just think that what Trump has been doing is better than what anyone else has done since… I can’t remember anyone doing as much pro-market, anti-regulation, tax cutting stuff as he has done. Yes, it’s a drop in the bucket, but still in the right direction. And now we see Trump trying to get zero tariffs with Europe and most of the media still screaming ‘TRADE WARS WITH OUR ALLIES!’.
Reading even basic economics–I’m talking Economics in One Lesson basic–was a bewildering knock on my high school education. Thanks, public schooling.
The next crisis will be state pension failures and our glorious, self-sacrificing pubic servants going on strike.
It’s going to be fun when large-scale PSU strikes result in gobs more people taking their business under the table.
Yeah, I see the “great” numbers but in my corner of the economic world, it’s penny pinching & relatively mediocre sales. I don’t see things booming.
From the “kicking cop”:
The affidavit said, “(Ambar Pacheco) later stated “She doesn’t know who, but she kicked somebody.”
I guess that’s the best excuse?
She doesn’t want to admit she kicked the pregnant lady, but knows there were witnesses?
People were kicked, cop went home safely, that’s what matters. Move along, cop hater.
Punishment Reduced for Somali Gang-Rapists in Sweden
The 13-year-old girl was probably asking for it.
White privilege!
So if it would have been a gang of rapey white swedish boys, the punishment would only be 2 months, right?
If they were under 18, yeah.
Sweden’s laws are really, really fucked up.
Clear the prisons of non-violent offenders and increase punishment for violent offenders (and increase punishment for prosecutors and police who conspire to convict innocent people who end up being classified as violent offenders). That’ll make me happy.
Yeah, I don’t know what’s so hard about actually punishing violent criminals while being less severe toward non-violent offenders or even decriminalizing victimless crimes. There doesn’t appear to be a single country that gets it.
Study finds surprisingly long stretches of celibacy. Mr. Lizard hardest hit.

I don’t understand why some extremely wealthy people do not have security for their persons and property. I see stories every now and then about how Celebrity X’s home was broken into while they were off shooting a movie. You have a net worth of hundreds of millions of dollars, you can’t afford to hire Rocco or Moose to watch over your 20 million dollar estate?
Apparently that’s one of 9 yachts her family owns, so I guess when you’re that kind of rich you can just take a idgaf approach and let insurance sort it out.
My guess is that if you leave your mansion unoccupied, you might be robbed or vandalized. If you let Rocco or Moose watch it, it is gay-ron-teed that they will throw giant parties and raid your liquor cabinet.
p.s. I once did a project on trying to instrument boats with sensors for an IoT company. Security is pretty hard because of the constant movement of the boat. Hard to tell if the boat is rocking because some ass in the no wake zone is going too fast or because someone jumped on your boat.
For high end boats, yeah you can solve that shit. My project was for lower end boat owners who don’t want to pay too much.
If I had something like that, I can guarantee you, if I can afford that, I would also afford someone guarding that 24/7. And it is possible to hire security people who will not throw giant parties or raid your liquor cabinet. There are still a few people who value their job.
Plus, if you have enough money, you can pay some serious professionals enough coin to do that sort of work.
Exactly this.
I have a drinking buddy who is a retired Marine who is part of a security detail for some Beverly Hills celebrity/Saudi sheikh/politician. I don’t know, and never ask him about his work (I mean, it’s all about security, right?). Serious minded professional, who ain’t going to raid the liquor cabinet.
We mostly talk about music and surfing/skating/working out/football. Trade songs on the jukebox at the local bar. Nice guy.
Exactly the kind of guy I’m talking about. My rackmate from boot camp ended up becoming a serious badass, serving with Force Recon for a while (the Marine Corps version of the Green Berets or SEALs, for anyone unfamiliar with them). He decided he was tired of deployments and got out and did executive protection for a while. Made a damned fine living at it too, until he got bored and moved on to something else.
I’d do home security the way rich people in India did it in a story I read once long ago – hire someone to let a bunch of cobras loose in the house while you’re away.
So how do you get rid of the cobras when you come home?
Personally, I’d go on the cheap and instead of hiring professionals to catch the snakes, I’d just organize a big party a few days before my return. After the snakes were done biting the caterers and guests, they wouldn’t have any venom left and you could safely dispose of them yourself. As a bonus there would be free food on your arrival and no pesky people to bother you.
You pay the snake handler to come in and get the snakes out.
My wife would not be pleased to find me paying hookers.
Because she’s being giving it away for free all these years?
Pullleeeeeze! I could have kept a bevy of snake handlers on retainer for the money that I have given to my wife and kids.
You hire someone to let a bunch of mongooses loose in the house.
mongoose is singular. The plural is polygoose.
Wow, a Pantera classic from SP! Thanks for giving the people what they want.
/hold the applause- just throw money
This is how I now the PC movement has gone too fucking far…
the team wants the focus to be on the dancers as artists and to highlight their skills, “not be eye candy or sexualized.”
Or employed.
The only skill I want to see is the jiggly.
You are not in the minority there.
John can help you locate some jiggly.
While I don’t mind thicc, I have a problem with blimp.
There was this guy I used to know, brother of a friend of mine. Sometimes we would drink together. But one time he got really drunk and wound up sleeping with this really huge fat girl. His little brother walked in on them together the next morning. Being the smartass that he was, his poor brother took a shit ton of abuse after that. I felt really bad for the guy because everyone was picking on him for what seemed like a year after that. Every fat girl joke insult you can even imagine. And it was really bothering the guy a lot. One time I was driving somewhere with some of my friends in the car and one of them spots the guy walking down the street, rolls down the window and yells ‘Hey, it’s the fat girl fucker! He loves fat girls!’ and everyone is laughing’. Moral of the story, don’t get really drunk and sleep with a fat girl and let anyone find out about it.
+1 Moped
Heh – one of my best friends in HS was this chunkier guy and also a total horn dog.
Once, during a cold spell between girlfriends, he was trying to convince me that a fatter, uglier GF (than my last one) would be just fine.
Me: I would rather take a vow of chastity than sink that low.
Yes I had some weird friends.
Well, there goes their ratings and the cheerleaders jobs. No matter how much people keep repeating the fact that the left will destroy every single thing they touch, no one listens and it gets proven again.
Hah….yeah, that’ll work well. Throw some fatties out there to cheerlead. They’ll look even chunkier standing next to the thin girls.
oh gawd no.
And for today’s halftime, Triggly Puff!
….as she performs her famous “Waves of Flesh” routine!
You know that the “different body type” cheerleaders will be the ones that they send up to the cheap seats. The attractive ones will be kept in the lower decks to amuse the high paying customers.
Which means that the chubbies will have to haul their butts up a bunch of stairs and arrive all sweaty and out of breath. Making even John lose his semi.
This is all because Cuban and the Mavs got nabbed in the #MeToo shit isn’t it? Can’t he just pay a fine and keep the hot chicks?
Don’t buy that shit about a 4.1% GDP that they are claiming, because THIS is what Trump’s economy really looks like!
Oh, them poor millennials!
**EDIT FAIRY AWAY!**
GILMORED!
Sure is crazy how the revisions all went one way under Obama and the other way under Trump.
Unexpectedly!
Oh Brett, I have mentioned that a few times, only to be told I was being racist….
That happened every fucking quarter under Obama. Shameless.
And if you use the same Kentucky windage from the Obama years, them bumping it up to 2.2 must mean it is above 3.
I’m sort of surprised that they didn’t use “unexpectedly” in the story. Isn’t that par for the course?
It was a big joke by the people that caught onto it and shamed the dnc operatives with bylines into stopping the use of that word to try and cover for how shitty the Obama years were turning out.
I am also sure, sooner than later, someone will claim this 4.1% GDP growth is because of Obama and do so totes seriously. Then argue that the tax cut actually caused that GDP growth number caused by Obama magic to go down by at least 50% because it deprived government of the money it needed to pick winners & losers….
I’ve seen the first part already. “Obama did all the hard work and the economy was already trending upwards. Now Trump gets all the credit for his work!”
Poor Obama. He got handed W’s economy and now his economy is being stolen by Trump. Why did he never get any recognition for his accomplishments?
At least the first part is true. Of course, he doubled down instead of reversing course, so he is still to blame.
Every president gets handed his predecessor’s economy. W got Bubba’s busted dot-com bubble and then had 9/11 torpedoing the economy for a while. Chocolate Nixon is the only one who gets excuses made for him on those grounds. And the fucker was in office for 8 years – there’s a statute of limitations on blaming W.
And that statute is less than a year, since the recession ended in June 2009.
“Poor Obama. He got handed W’s economy and now his economy is being stolen by Trump. ”
Yeah, W’s economy – and I am going to state clearly that I firmly believe W is a fucking nanny stater moron and no friend of capitalism or individual liberty of any kind – was created by Pelosi and the fucking left’s intentional crash of the housing market. These people are willing to destroy the economy to win politically, and I guarantee you they will pull that trigger to unseat Trump if they are given the chance. Forget the impeachment: woe the economic destruction that these assholes will inflict on us so they can steal the reigns of power again.

But wait, weren’t the Team Evil, ahhh, Blue guys indignant when Team Stupid, ahhh, Red said that they hoped and would work for Obama’s failure? It was a horrible thing then, but AOK now.
God, I really hate those Teams.

You know, it’s ok because I don’t even need to click that link. Why would I believe the same people who will tell me to my face:
Look, you didn’t get a tax cut! Look here at this neat calculator I have, this proves it!’.
Me: *Looks at paystub history* … ‘Umm, I don’t need your calculator, I just take my pay now and from that I subtract my pay before the tax cut took effect’.
‘CRUMBS!’
Thanks for the Bobbie Gentry tune.
I found that BBC tape about a year ago. I love it.
Seconded. My parents had a bunch of her records. Great memories.
The Pantera was pretty sweet, too.
Passed my qualification for a MN permit to carry last night. Now I just need to drive up to come some county sheriff’s office and fill out an application.
Nice!
Too bad we are such fuckheads about reciprocity. I think I’m gonna do the Utah one this winter.
The requirement to say “sorry about that” after every trigger pull was a bit distracting at first.
You get used to it. Muscle memory and all that.
How much did that cost you? I did some research and found my governor here in “The People’s Republic of Connecticut” had jacked up the prices to do this so that when I renew next, I will be paying a boatload of cash fore that constitutional privilege.
The class taught at my hometown range in Iowa was $80. The application fee, I’ve been told, is $100.
I live to serve.
Twat
On a conference call with analysts Friday, CEO Jack Dorsey said Twitter would continue to “invest heavily” in improving the health of the platform, calling it the “right thing to do” for the company and “for society as a whole.”
“We believe that Twitter’s value as a daily service is enhanced when the conversation on the platform is healthier and people feel safe freely expressing themselves,” Dorsey said.
————-
Twitter has focused on safeguarding the service in recent months amid scrutiny of its role in spreading fake news and election meddling as well as the broader data privacy backlash hitting the tech industry. It cracked down on fake accounts, purging suspicious accounts from users’ follower metrics and removed 143,000 apps last quarter for violating its policies.
Just what we need; a sanctimonious douchebag like Dorsey deciding what’s good for society.
It isn’t fair because progs keep getting their asses handed to them in public. It has to be pretty humiliating. So that’s not fair, you see? We have to make it fair by banning these conservative and libertarian meanies. If only they could be nice.
Dorsey is envious of all the headlines Zuckerberg made this week.
A personal gripe: Fangraphs and The Hardball Times (owned by the same people) have long been favorites of mine, but just like every other sports site they’ve been creeping ever more down the hyperpoliticization of everything road. SJWish articles have been popping up with increasing frequency. So it was with no surprise but instead resignation that I saw this today.
ZOMG!!1!1 People who don’t share all of my personal beliefs not only attend baseball games, but get group deals from the franchise! Problematic! Misogynist! RAAAAAAAAAAAAAACIST!!!!!
Just write about baseball, dipshits.
I gave up fangraphs because their juvenile drama queen headline style just screams “SJW assholes are in charge”.
“Unpacking” is one of those words where you can safely ignore everything that follows.
Yes indeed.
I don’t even like Barstool. Most of what they produce is grotesquely stupid…..but so what?
I like their semi-nude girls. That’s what she has her SJW panties in a twist about.
Whatever it is – the point remains, what the fuck does she care?

All I hear is stool and pack.
Somebody somewhere is doing something I don’t like.
These people are like the anti-smoking nuts who assure everyone that their unwoke ways are costing them customers.
“If only you were more woke, your ball park would be flooded with gals. But you allow these knuckle dragging women haters to go unpunished and all the gals stay home”
Then if anyone tries to implement their suggestions, they quickly find out that the mythical mob of non-smokers/women with money burning holes in their pockets never materialize and they lose money. When they complain the original busybodies will just sniff and say that it would have worked if their plan had just been implemented at a state/league wide level. The problem is that the knuckle draggers still had alternatives.
I don’t care what a team does, their core demographic is always going to be men. Women (correctly imo) think sports are stupid and don’t want to go dump a shit ton of money on tickets, food and drink.
But I’m sure there are meetings in the marketing department of every pro team today that are discussing this article. Wondering how they can be more woke.
I think I’m in love.

We have kids on the corners around here running their lemonade stands on pretty much every nice day during the summer. I guess the JOOS don’t repect the law and all that. Or maybe they’re allowed to do this because they’re controlling eveyone’s minds with their JOO laserbeams from the hollow Zionist controlled moon. But I mean, how can I sleep at night as long as these lemonade stands are permitted outside the law? I can’t get any sleep.
All that unregulated lemon sugar water, it’s horrifying.
One hot day my wife was like ‘honey, look at those cute little girls, we should buy their lemonade’. So I quickly warned her ‘shhh! Don’t think about it! Yes, they’re cute, but they’re JOO debils! They put secret JOO mind control powder in the lemonade! You remember that Hispanic girl we used to run into and talk to? Guadalupe, right? You seen her for a while? NO! That’s because she drank the JOO lemonade and now she’s cleaning their homes for $3 a week! She’s a slave now!’. It’s a good thing

A few contributions from the itty bitty titty committee for the (mentally ill) Glibs that prefer that. I’ll take 17.
I think the current model has to burn to the ground to be renewed.
https://www.mindingthecampus.org/2018/07/26/the-sad-state-of-higher-education/
I’ve thought for a while that the traditional “campus experience” will stick around but in a greatly reduced capacity. I think a good percentage of these kids (I hope) in the future will be doing online training and job apprenticing. People are getting wise to the fact that college in its current form just isn’t worth it in a lot of ways.

It’s in decline because of Marxism and identity politics. It’s a fatal degenerative disease. I’m afraid there is no cure outside of the crash and burn you speak of.
I think it will hold out for awhile longer. Before Spawn 1 chose his school, we visited a bunch. The pitches that we received from most of them were hardcore ROI-focused. Data on jobs, salaries, etc. Granted, these were all engineering programs, but the schools definitely knew their (parent) customers.
He chose well.
/biased
I think so. I’m excited for him.
Even if he doesn’t stick to it, an engineering education in 2018 is what a liberal arts education was in 1918. He’ll learn how to think and apply critical analysis (the real kind) to new domains, and he’ll learn some math and science which is *much* harder to learn outside of the classroom setting. He can take that to many different fields should he choose. But you’ll never teach an accountant how to perform FEA or how heat transfer works or how a shear plane in a load of gravel works.
Did you say what school he settled on?
By “it” I mean a career in engineering, not finishing school. Lots of those lessons don’t become apparent till you get out of school and actually have to solve some real problems.
Colorado School of Mines. Awesome school that apparently prepares you to be a productive citizen and a connoisseur of mammaries.
Right, Q?
Yarp, though the dearth of eligible females on campus, while excellent for study habits, hobbles the latter. For that you have to go to Boulder or Denver.
Good choice.
I’m sure it will do for his libido what MN winter does for my smoker. Makes you enjoy it more when you get to use it so infrequently.
Accountants are too busy earning money to worry about heat transfer. We leave that to the HVAC repair man.
When the inevitable and wholly justifiable massacre occurs, I’m totally on your jury.
The Patriarchy at it again.

TAX THE RICH!
Why didn’t anyone else ever think of that? She’s truly a genius.
Confiscate their wealth then kill them! Time for the guillotine!
Funny how anyone who advocates this has never sat down with a calculator for 5 minutes. You could confiscate all the wealth of the top 5% and it would pay the federal budget for just one year. Then after that, you have nothing. But math doesn’t get as many votes as envy.
“Math is hard, let’s go #RESIST!”
Don’t bother her with your objective cisfacts! Honestly, she knows her voting base doesn’t care if it’s true or not. THEY WANT TO BELIEVE.
Now, whether she knows it or not is another question. I’m going with “not,” as her previous utterments have shown her to be an empty headed twit. Perfect for politics.
“Then the last key, which is extremely extremely important is re-prioritization. Just last year we gave the military a $700 billion budget increase, which they didn’t even ask for,” she said.
What is she talking about?

https://news.vice.com/en_us/article/ev8b4p/gun-control-groups-are-racing-against-the-clock-to-stop-3d-gun-blueprints-from-going-online
New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal, a Democrat, sent a “cease and desist” letter to Defense Distributed that threatened to take legal action against Wilson and his company if they made blueprints for 3D-printed guns available to residents of New Jersey.
“Defense Distributed’s plans to allow anyone with a 3D printer to download a code and create a fully operational gun directly threatens the public safety of New Jersey’s residents,” Grewal stated in the letter. “Posting this material online is no different than driving to New Jersey and handing out hard-copy files on any street corner. The federal government is no longer willing to stop Defense Distributed from publishing this dangerous code, and so New Jersey must step up.”
you’re welcome for the laugh.
“threatened to take legal action against Wilson and his company”
Hasn’t this already been settled in court? What can they do about it?
The process is the punishment.
Now, if the courts would actually enforce the rules against frivolous lawsuits, we might see less of this.
DD settled with DOJ when it fell under new management.
I can’t wait for all those NJ crack thugs to run down to their local library, download plans for an AR, enroll in a trade school, gain access to the metal shop, learn how to use the equipment, get a job to afford the materials, then use their skills to build something useful to society.
DD will be responsible for motivating and reforming more criminals than any other social program NJ has every tried.
DD is publishing 3D printing files, not fabrication plans (or not just?). Minimal skill required, which is why they’re giving people the vapors.
The crackhead will have to take a CS100 course then, and still find $500 to buy a makerbot.
Either that or some enterprising young entrepreneur should invest in the 3D printer, get an FFL and then sell the resulting ARs to law-abiding people in shitty neighborhoods to defend themselves.
That would be better and more effective than anything Mother Teresa ever did.
“Minimal skill” and “3D printing” are not terms that should be used in the same sentence referring to the mental capacity of the general public.
agree, 3D printers are not “set it and forget it” tools. Plenty of learning, trying and failing with those just to get something that prints and looks nice. Printing something to withstand even one firing would be another large hurdle.
I think there will be more people hurting themselves, than others, with a printed gun.
Everything sounds easy if you don’t know what you are talking about.

“Thanks for the Bobbie Gentry tune”
These are my people; this is what I am in my core. If you put my picture or voice into an FBI computer it will draw you a map of precisely the red clay hill in Mississippi where my people have been buried for seven generations. We escaped MS circa Watergate, and I learned to speak in complete sentences in my adopted Tennessee….a very, very different place than the deep South. A bunch of degrees and many skins on the wall later, I’ve done pretty well, but only the fancy parts of me have changed.
Who cares? Why write this OT junk? Because I hear family in Gentry (Mom looked just like that then, too), because her backwoods truths resonate in me, because high finance and thermodynamics have not replaced my love of a sharp ax or corn squeezins. Thanks for the tune? Hell, thanks for everything: from Elvis to Oprah, from Kermit to Darth Vader, my neighbors have escaped….and prospered and painted the world over; I hear Elvis and the smell of okra will waft into the bottom of my brain.
Who knows what reasonable people hear. Morgan Freeman was cast as the voice of g-d. I thought James Earl Jones was just earthy-neighbor-yummy….molasses: Vader’s sweet grandfather voice (as I hear him) never reconciled with the fearsome space samurai get-up.
Gentry got hers and got out…..like we all do if we can; she was hiding (not so well) on some island near Savannah last I knew. I got out, but my plot’s waiting on that same clay hill, just another hillbilly that never completely left home: “the past isn’t dead; it isn’t even past.”
“only the fancy parts of me have changed”
Circumcision?
J/K, I like hearing personal stories from Glibs. This was interesting, thanks.

We live in a pretty cool country.
I was born in Iowa. Moved away and then back again several times. But I lived in Atlanta for 2 years and Chattanooga for 4 years at the time this song was a hit on the radio. I can’t shake the influence the south had on me even 40+ years later.

I don’t think this is going to be as generally appealing as they hoped.
“She Guevara, your campaign seems to have the momentum of a runaway freight train. Why are you so popular?”
She has to be a GOP plant. Because this is just too good to be true for Republicans in the midterms.
I’m really going to laugh when she loses to the guy she beat in the primary.
I think he’s still on the ballot and I see him using the party machinery to win in Nov. Think of Murkowski losing the primary to the Tea Party candidate, but winning the real election as a write in.
I don’t know if I could take the pure pleasure of waking to find out that there was no Blue Wave and that She Gueverra has lost to the old party hack. (Oh, throw in a Keith Ellison loss in Minnesoda and I’m totes happy).
They said similar things about The Donald.
“Insulin was isolated by Canadians Dr. Frederick Grant Banting and Professor John James Richard Macleod. They were awarded The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1923.”
That’s just so they can sell more maple syrup.
I missed yesterday’s Twitter discussion. I’ll chime in with my two cents here.
In principle, I agree with the sentiments SP expresses. But, there is a bit of a rub. Twitter holds itself out as a content-neutral forum. That has implications. Under the law, that means they can’t be held liable for what people say on Twitter. But, if they are censoring some users based on content, it’s a little difficult for them to claim that they are a content-neutral forum. They’re exercising editorial discretion. That means that Twitter, if they do want to censor conservatives, had better get ready to lawyer up for the host of defamation, cyber-bullying, etc. lawsuits they’d have to face the same as if they were the ones publishing the material.
I’d be more than happy to call Twitter a private enterprise that can censor whomever they want for whatever reason they want. HOWEVER, what tore it for me was the judge ruling that Trump couldn’t block people. So what then? Does that mean Twitter is a public utility? Is it a government entity? If so, then they cannot engage in viewpoint discrimination.
All in all though, SP’s conclusion is, I think, the proper response; just don’t use it. Twitter has already revealed itself as a biased outlet, so why would someone with opposing views *want* to support it?
I think the implication is that once you start asserting editorial control beyond “abuse”, you become indirectly responsible for what everyone posts, left or right.
Exactly. Twitter can’t say, “We get to decide what gets written on Twitter” and then turn around and say “We have no responsibility for what gets written on Twitter”.
HOWEVER, what tore it for me was the judge ruling that Trump couldn’t block people.
Same.
They’re evenhanded about weeding out defamatory and abusive Tweets, though. They block all of the users recommended by Anita Sarkeesian and the SPLC.
Doesn’t it also open them up to fraud lawsuits? If they advertise as a content neutral forum, but in fact are discriminating based on viewpoint, aren’t they committing fraud? Could then send the FTC after them on those grounds? Do they have any money to take if you did? Am I possessed by the spirit of Judge Napolitano?
“Do they have any money to take if you did?”
Excellent question. IIRC, they’re one of these magical Silicon Valley vaporware companies that have never turned a profit yet still manage to get their overlords rich. I don’t understand how it’s possible.
IPOs are the equivalent of beads and bits of glass necklaces.
It could, but you’d have to present evidence of harm. I suppose you could get some advertisers who were targeting conservatives on Twitter.
Lot of those being targeted make their living via the internet and could claim lost revenue from being shadow-banned, etc.
Man, I shoulda went to law school.
I missed it as well; at the risk of plowing old ground: I think it’s okay; it’s not consistent, but it’s okay.
“Twitter holds itself out as a content-neutral.” And Elizabeth was a virgin and Trump weighs 236 pounds. Twitter’s duty is to their investors and that’s it; like everyone, they have poses and ruses and half-truths they rely upon; they’re the GNC of the internet: full of pills that haven’t been tested by any lab you’ve ever heard of…..caveat emptor.
“They’re exercising editorial discretion.” This is also okay; it’s their server. If I ruled the world, I’d make ad hominem remarks in debate space a capital offense and let absolutely everything else go, but everyone weighs reasonableness differently. Once we acknowledge that everyone is shading the truth about how well they conform to a principle, how much they miss the mark is up to them. I can call holding on every play both ways. It’s their version of “we report, you decide.”
I follow all kinds on twitter, Popehat and such; it’s just culturally interesting to me. In the car I might punch between NPR and Rush (not funny any more) just to see where the narrative is. I can’t watch Colbert (not funny any more), but he was onto something with his “truthiness” notion; Tim O’Brien is a novelist and not accountable for accuracy, but I’ve chewed on this idea of his: “A thing may happen and be a total lie; another thing may not happen and be truer than the truth.”
“They’re exercising editorial discretion.” This is also okay; it’s their server.
I agree. And it should also be their liability when they decide what does and doesn’t get published. Just like any other publisher. I think it’s wrong to say “We’re going to hold one set of brick and mortar publishers to one legal standard of liability, but exempt another set of electronic publishers from liability.”. If Twitter wants to play publisher, they had better be ready to face the same risks as any other.
I guess I wouldn’t hold any publisher accountable for anything. I missed it if that’s somehow part of the deal or logic; ideas aren’t bullets. There is nothing they could publish that would make me want to shoot up a pizza joint, so I think it’s okay.
I don’t know your perspective, and I have no dog in this fight, but I don’t know why anyone would care what Twitter does. The only argument that has interested me was the one about advertising targeting, which reminds me of another timeless saw: half of all advertising budgets are wasted; we just don’t know which half. So it is GNC: results vary.
I do a lot of automotive work, and the design of surveys and segmenting of products just tickles me no end. X rightly claims that their vehicle Y has more power than any other vehicle in its class…Gosh, your 3.5 liter block is the best of all the mills between 2.8 and 3.6 liters….that’s amazing! I’m totally lost as to how Twitter is any more trapped in its dubious claims in think-space than anyone else is. There’s no weights and measures office to weigh their bottles: their bottles are full of air on a good day.
I guess I wouldn’t hold any publisher accountable for anything.
There is a strain of 1A purism that says you shouldn’t ever hold anyone liable for defamation. I don’t agree with it, though. Free speech isn’t freedom from the consequences of speaking, and if your speech wrongfully damages someone else, why shouldn’t you be held responsible for the damage you wrongfully caused?
Right; I didn’t mean to imply that defamation was okay; I try to reconcile all this below at 11:36.
They can’t have it both ways. They can’t be effectively immune from defamation cases because they are purely a conduit for tweets, and exercise control over what gets “published” on their site.
If Google delivers a defamatory email, Google isn’t liable for defamation, because Google is a pure conduit for email. If the NYT published the defamatory email, the NYT is liable for defamation because they exercise editorial control. If you want control, you take responsibility for what you control.
The Trump ruling was an absurdity. I see no difference between saying Trump can’t block people on Twitter, and saying Trump can’t refuse to do an interview with CNN. If Trump is prohibited from blocking people on Twitter, is he also prohibited from just quitting Twitter? What’s the difference? In both cases, as a government actor Trump is being required to use a certain messaging service in a certain way, isn’t he?
“If the NYT published the defamatory email, the NYT is liable for defamation because they exercise editorial control”
I get where you boys are going there; is issue that someone was clearly, sensibly defamed? Maybe I’ve not been paying enough attention?
The issue is that pure conduits for information aren’t exposed to defamation cases. Publishers who exercise editorial control are. At some point, Twitter (and Facebook, and any online platform) that exercises control over content stops being a pure conduit and becomes a publisher. Which would be catastrophic for them, as they would (a) suddenly be financially responsible for the daily avalanche of defamation on their platforms and (b) are a very inviting target for a lawsuit because they have money.
You should read some Umberto Eco.
Co-sign.
they’re not.
*or rather, they are, but in technical ways which allow that claim to be dismissed. and its non-trivial distinction.
if you’re being twitter ‘circumscribed’, everything you post will appear on YOUR feed. not everything you post will appear on your followers feeds. at least, immediately. it might appear eventually, but the point is – as long as your posted content is available ‘somewhere’, its not being censored. its just not as readily available or timely.
and they’re not making the decision about whom to circumscribe based on content (or so they claim); they do it based on how others are interacting w/ it. If lots of bots are auto-retweeting your posts, they’re going to shut your posts down. if lots of accounts that get muted/blocked retweet your posts, your posts will get slowed down, etc.
its algorithmic based on meta-behavior, not content.
that said, its not hard to simply tell the algorithms to apply to group x, but not group x, and say, “Its not us! its the algorithm!”
Which is already how they do it with ‘content strikes’; because language use or insults/harassment will get Group X suspended on single strike, while Group Y is allowed to do/say whatever they want w/o any concern. Its a glaring, obvious case of double standards, completely based on their editorial position on “Who they prefer”. Tankies make death threats all day long and no one so much as bats an eye. ‘Youtube personality’ makes off-color joke, and is banned w/ 1 strike.
as long as your posted content is available ‘somewhere’, its not being censored. its just not as readily available or timely.
Hmm. Not sure about this. If my book is available only in hardcopy at one location for a year, that sure feels like censorship to me. If my Twitter feed is blocked in some countries, but not others, I think its fair to say the countries blocking it are censoring me, even though my Twitter feed is available elsewhere. Platforms like Twitter don’t fit easily into our pre-existing categories of censorship, but at some point I think that limiting distribution becomes censorship.
they’re not making the decision about whom to circumscribe based on content (or so they claim); they do it based on how others are interacting w/ it
They have made the decision to circumscribe. Now, some limitations on what to circumscribe, even based on content, won’t cross the line into editorial control (for example, circumscribing illegal content is still content-based, but not editorial control). How others interact with your content can be (indeed, likely is) based on your content; if they circumscribe distribution of your content because others object to it, for example, then I don’t think outsourcing the determination that the content is offensive changes the fact that they are circumscribing your content because it is offensive, which is editorial control.
These are not easy lines to draw, but I think they exist even for Twitter. I don’t nearly enough about what Twitter is actually doing to say whether they are crossing these lines, but I the lines are there.
“at some point”
and this is why people have lawyers.
the point is that ‘some point’ is legally vague enough such that mere throttling of someone comms /= silencing
otherwise you’d be arguing that no company could EVER interfere w/ user-content on their sites. which obviously the retain the right to do. the discretion to do so they have built into their Terms of Service, which are written in ways to give enormous latitude
I’m just setting up the issues the way I sees ’em.
There is a line between “pure conduit” and “edited publication”, but in the case of these online platforms, I don’t know where it is. I’m not proposing “at some point” as the actual rule; I’m actually saying that the “at some point” means there needs to be a rule (and I’m sure what the rule should be).
An interesting question might also be – do we look at the authority they claim to interfere with user content in their TOS, or do we look at what actually do with that authority? There are advantages to using either one, I think.
If lots of bots are auto-retweeting your posts, they’re going to shut your posts down. if lots of accounts that get muted/blocked retweet your posts, your posts will get slowed down, etc.
The first is woefully ripe for abuse, and the second will only amplify the effect.
that said, its not hard to simply tell the algorithms to apply to group x, but not group x, and say, “Its not us! its the algorithm!”
Even if it’s not wholly intentional (i.e., can’t be proved definitely in court), it is not hard for biases to seep in. The algorithms are trained by humans, and the decisions they make* reflect the biases of the humans who trained them.
* = Technically, the decision is still up to a human, in the sense that someone decides at what thresholds of estimated confidence certain actions should be taken.
When Govvy Lickapooper is considered “moderate” your party has gone off the rails.
https://gazette.com/government/hickenlooper-says-moderation-is-best-path-for-democrats/article_54b39b86-8f70-11e8-9d6f-0f31b41d7bdf.html
I expected Evil Party would be running circles around Trump and the GOP simply by playing the moderate foil to Trump’s cantankerousness. They could have split him off from the GOP by appearing more cooperative. Amnesty for the wall would have been the perfect tradeoff: pretend to fund border security and Trump amnesties millions of new Dem voters. The GOP was in disarray, most Congressmen weren’t sure whether or how to treat with Trump, and the looming spectacle of a lame duck first term would have driven Trump to the table with Pelosi and Schumer. All it would have taken was a little composure on their part. They couldn’t manage it.
Or as I’ve been saying; all they have to do is not be crazy and they can’t even do that.
Disappointed to find the Ethiopian food stand in the farmer’s market at work is vegan. It’s at least gotta have a hard boiled egg, for fuck’s sake!
That is all English but I do not understand. How can you have Ethiopian food without ketfo?
I’m a doro wot kinda gal, myself. All they had was berbere lentils and those yellow chickpeas and some greens. Fuck that noise. Gimmie my chicken & hard boiled egg, assholes!
When the food is being marketed not to actual Ethiopians but instead to white hippies.
Portland. There is no place in America more White and more Hippie than Portland, OR. Ethiopian places here all have ketfo and doro wot. There’s a lot to bitch about here in Progtopia, but the food is varied and delicious.

Wish someone would.
Holy crap. I have a new love in my life.
1 cup yogurt + 1 package of instant oatmeal + 3 tbsp oat fiber + 1 scoop unflavored protein powder + 1 tbsp dehydrated peanut butter + 1 package of splenda + 1 cup of pears in syrup. Mix everything but the pears the day before, let it sit in the fridge over night. Mix the pears in, and eat.
Its, well, it looks like an unappitizing brown gloop. Looks like hell. Tastes like heaven.

Mrs. Leap down for a threesome?
After I’ve been making this for a month, she asked to try a bite. “Wow, that actually tastes good. I thought you were lying!”
Honey almond granola and plain greek yogurt. Mmm.
I am not a fan of almonds, but have been known to smack a Nature Made peanut butter granola bar with my Mrk 1 Cullinary Brick and add the resulting bits to yogurt.
Is your culinary brick something of your own creation?
What flavor ice cream do you put that on?
If I was going to, cinnamon. Underrated stripper name. Underrated ice cream.
In this case, its because 1) cinnamon goes great with pears and 2) there is no such thing as nutmeg flavored ice cream.
Nutmeg flavored ice cream, eh? I think I have a weekend culinary project. Thanks for the tweak.
Actually thanks mucho for that. My mind is racing with flavor combinations.

Wow. How domestically violent do you have to be to be the domestic violence chief?
How do you think she got that pay? She had to go crazy on some mf’ers.
Job Title: “SME in Wife Beating”
Lucky they have a domestic violence squaw.
They would have had to pay a chief a cool million if you believe the statistics.
well if we do the math… holy crap! that’s a budget.
I’m guessing She Gueverra’s scheme to soak the rich doesn’t include The Vanguard.
My shocked face is at the cleaners.
The “not-for-profit” world is rife with this sort of self-dealing. The head of my wife’s old not-for-profit had a board stocked with friends, had herself a generous $150k+ salary and might, _might_ roll into the office maybe 20 hours a week.
But it’s teh evil corporashuns that are the problem.
Odd thing I noticed: why are all of the pictures accompanying the story from 2004?
No one knows where all the VAWA money goes.
It’d be real nice if they took a closer look at the SPLC…
Nice work if you can get it.
Yeah. About that. You can’t get it. 20-1 odds that Carr is very politically connected and was before she even got the job. And, in a sick way, it probably makes sense for the non-profit. If you’re a non-profit, a politically connected rainmaker can get you a lot more resources than you can scrounge up begging individual donors. They pay her $762k a year. What if she’s able to bring in $10mm in government grant money? In that case, it sucks to say, it’s a bargain.
It would be especially funny to see somebody make that argument, and then rail against CEOs being overpaid.
Oh, and they will. Unless the CEO is politically connected on the right team. That’s the thing about statism. It rots everything it touches and anything it doesn’t touch, it covets. And this is a game that seems to go beyond party lines. For statists, something existing outside the orbit of the tribe is something that has to either be taken over or destroyed. That thing is a set of resources that its existence denies the tribe.
Does anyone know what happened to the proposed 12 billion in farmer handouts that was being proposed? Did it get ditched after the EU negotiations? I haven’t been able to find it out.

I get the guy’s main point and think that ignoring unreasonable assertions is part of being a juror,
but there is a bigger point: it’s not smart to alarm people. People defend themselves, and maybe you don’t survive a bit of your own poor judgment to testify to your side of things. I know I don’t go rushing up to people, their cars, or their homes; I don’t swashbuckle about in public with fence pickets adapted as swords; I don’t bitch slap people for having music that’s too loud in the park…..I keep my distance and move about peaceably; I walk quietly.
