In 2002 we were in a beach town pub district in Spain having some beers with local friends when some seemingly nice Euro fellow found out I was American and started asking me seemingly innocent questions about George Bush. I answered matter-of-factly, but within moments I was surrounded by a hyped-up crowd who wanted to shout at me about how terrible the US was. (This was near Barcelona and actially reminiscent of a scene in the movie named Barcelona). It took me several minutes to talk my way out, I was just here for a nice visit with my friends and not looking for an argument, but when I finally got away my wife was visibly shaken.
I learned then not to even sound mildly to the right whenever around strangers in Europe, but never thought it would become like that here. And it is now. I keep my yap shut, especially living in the Bay Area.
Thank goodness we can still come on chat sites. For the time being, anyway.

I have been really busy the last couple weeks traveling and working… I can barely keep up with all the tears. But I’m gathering that it’s especially schadenfreudlich this week.

And it’s really kicked into high gear today, with the Janus decision announcement and Kennedy’s surprise retirement.
Just the one trip last week. We hit up The Greenhouse Tavern. My boss and I agreed that the chicken wings were the best we have ever had, and the burgers were meh. Lesson learned is take advantage of the per diem and don’t be afraid to splurge on something better than a burger…
I haven’t had the wings at the Greenhouse, usually I’m just stopping there on St. Patrick’s day, as it’s usually not that crowded (relatively speaking), and grabbing the animal style poutine for several of us. I will say the wings at Fat Head’s and the Brew Kettle (both in the suburbs) are outstanding, and usually scare people who order them without realizing that they’re the full wing. At least Fat Head’s started serving a 3 wing size.
These weren’t the typical Buffalo-style I’m used to from… well, Buffalo, and various attempts at replicating that nationwide. Instead they were less hot and more vinegary (and still spicy), but most especially they were “fall off the bone”.
Not sure what that is but it sounds delicious. (I know what poutine is.)
