France goes through, the Soccerroos did a fair dinkum job against the Danes, but it won’t be enough. Messi and Argentina are looking to spend the rest of the summer at home, well, Messi won’t go back to Argentina if he wants to live. Looking forward to the youtube mashups — “Don’t shoot at me, Argentina”. It’s the longest day of the year, and I am feeling every second at work today.
Statists worry that TOP. MEN.’s plans for transit will be spoiled by the unwashed (and thanks to capitalism, far too rich for their own good) masses. Who keep wanting the control of being able to drive themselves! The nerve!
And, no sooner have the unwashed masses been granted the right to try life saving treatments thanks to unseemly protests against their leaders than the cries of “profiteering” ring out. Probably by someone who thinks paying $150/hr for holistic medicine practioners should be covered treatments for Stage IV cancer.
Hey guys, I’m sure we’ll all be surprised that doctors employed by the State suffered no consequences for prescribing life-shortening amounts of heroin to patients merely because they were old, and without first gaining the patients’ approval. Its almost like liability is a feedback mechanism….
And finally, state capitalism seems to be entering its terminal phase in Venezuela. May the coup be relatively bloodless and the next government more open to a free and fair society.
Here you go. The Longest Day.

Why doesn’t the state just sell life shortening amounts of heroin OTC? win-win
Because people who could otherwise be on the dole for life who can be rounded up and bussed (or whatever they do in Britain) to polls would kick too soon?
…would kick too soon?
Never stops ’em in Chicago.
They just need to skip to the chase and go full Stalinist purge/liquidation. If your goal is to save money, the fewer people you have to pay for, the better. Just start killing.
As I said in morning lynx: Alternate Headline – “Government: Still the World’s Most Efficient Murderer!”

the Venezuela link takes me to a picture of Captain Picard’s shiny dome. Is he leading the coup?
#makeitso
Weird. I keep clicking the “read next” at the site and getting Picard. The article name in the URL is not that article, so… Venezuelan hackz0rs?
yeah the “read next” from the page I’m landing on is the actual link you wanted. No idea.
I just want to see Picard hang out in Venezuela and order a “tea. earl gray. hot” only to be served tepid water flavored with the blood of the campesino proletariat so he get’s enraged and has Worf rain fiery proton torpedo death down upon Maduro.
That or Q has a Venezuelan fiesta.
I would watch this.
“Number One, we don’t usually engage in actions against States, but these savages have no shame. Mr. Worf… Kill anyone fatter than me, they’re more likely than not government or collaborators.”
Good times
Weird. I don’t remember that episode, but I clearly must have seen it as I envisioned something remarkably similar.
“Q has a Venezuelan fiesta”
Clothing optional for the ladies.
That or Q has a Venezuelan fiesta.
According to a few Eurotrash coworkers, that’s a great way to snap out of a slump, if you’re not shy about paying for the privilege. Although I think they went to Colombia.
A Venezuelan Fiesta must be more like a Cleveland Steamer (only without poop, because that involves eating) and less like a Colombian Neck-tie?
Me too. Kind of interesting but definitely not about Venezuela.
The Longest Day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztoAMD0hMZM
I’d probably pick that among my personal “top 5 films ever made” for various reasons.
its not that its stupendous in any one way. its that it attempts something so incredibly broad and manages to do it successfully. its really like a half-dozen (or more?) completely different stories woven together. but all have compelling characters and very-real dramatic arcs.
Fabulous cast to get into one movie.
Bobby Darin’s silly death scene. “but. two. clicks.”
“Hold until relieved”
Richard burton’s reverse arc which seems to go from cynicism to optimism
“The bells!” guy who goes deaf being hung up on church tower
The one-take, moving camera shot of the french assault
Ted Roosevelt’s cane
like a dozen mini-stories which hold together completely on their own, and with memorable characters.
Yes, but casting a 55 year old John Wayne to play the 27 year old Benjamin Vandervoort was silly.
Or the 53 year old Robert Ryan as the 37 year old Jim Gavin
I’m drinking a Stone Tangerine Express IPA right now. I don’t know why I bought this other than I’d had everything else in the beer cooler before. Generally not a fan of fruit beers (or Stone really), but this one works for me. I guess I’ll turn in my beer snob membership card now.
6.7% is a good neighborhood for a beer to live in.
Cigar City Invasion. I know why it was on sale now. Its like a… weak… Jai Lai.
I actually like Invasion. But I never ever buy it because it has insufficient alcohol and Jai Alai is sooo much better (especially the oaked version). Cigar City Jai Alai is literally the only thing I will miss about Tampa.
Its not bad. Just, like you say. Jai Alai is superior in every way.
I don’t know if you’ve been back to Texas at all in the last couple years, but Community Brewing up in DFW area makes a beer called Mosaic IPA that is the most perfectest beer in the world (8.6% six pack for 9 bucks? yes please). I love it so much (especially the oaked version again)
Jai Alai is a close substitute, but damn I miss that mosaic ipa.
Huh. No, I mostly just by Shiner (I saw the Ruby Redbird today) for nostalgia. Sloopy brought a pony keg of St. Arnold’s Lawnmower to the beach and it was darn good. Although we learned that we’re too old to care for a keg over multiple days, and have too many kids to just dispatch it in one try.
Shiner tastes like high school to me so I can see the nostalgia appeal, but I rarely drink it these days. My father-in-law used to drink awful shit like Miller High Life all the time and whenever I visited I would decline the beer he offered me.
Several years ago he had Shiner in the fridge so I drank some beers with him and ever since he has decided that Shiner must be my favorite beer. It’s always stocked now when I visit and that’s pretty much the only place I drink it.
I like a lot of St. Arnold’s stuff. They make some pretty solid brews. Lawnmower is a good day drinker, and Endeavor is ridiculously good.
mosaic is a very nice hop variety.
yeah that beer made me a fan. Since then I’m willing to give anything a shot if it has mosaic in the mix. Definitely my favorite these days.
They’re starting to distribute cigar city in Raleigh/durham. I avoid the Invasion as well.
I love the oaked jai alai
Cigar City distributes in PA, but they’ve been afraid to come to Ohio so far. There are times I wish my state didn’t drink so much.
I’ve had that one… the fruit isn’t overpowering, which I think is key.
yeah. definitely not a juice bomb and hoppy enough to balance what juice there is.
And, no sooner have the unwashed masses been granted the right to try life saving treatments thanks to unseemly protests against their leaders than the cries of “profiteering” ring out.

That article is infuriating.
They need to live their final months in bleak hopelessness and despair it seems.
In my Catholic upbringing I was taught that every life is important (which is ironic now that we have a commie pope, but I digress). The idea of sacrificing some people for the good of the collective is infuriating, whether it be in health care or education. And even worse, there are politically connected “elites” out there who will never have to make those sacrifices. This is reason #1 why I am libertarian.
I’m disappointed in all of you for not linking this yet.

Are these women immune to being raped simply because of their profession? Of course not.
Does their profession blur the lines even more than they already are? Definitely.
Does the fact that these alleged incidents happened on camera complicate matters even further and hurt their credibility? I think so.
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/ny-news-porn-metoo-misconduct-20180614-story.html
I’m not familiar with that young lady’s oeuvre, but my gut makes me think she probably has a legit claim. I think there’s also a fair amount of simply poor negotiation involved and a helluva lot of room for a misunderstanding, so I’m not sure, to quote Whoopi, it was rape rape in her case. I also understand why the prosecutor wasn’t touching it.
But, yeah, I agree that being a pron star means the lines are blurred. There’s lots of really rough, hard core stuff out there that has more than willing participants. And many of those involved aren’t the most stable people. It makes it really hard to prosecute a case.
People in the kink community struggle with this too. I’ve changed my practices. I don’t play with women I don’t know any longer. I make them jump through way more hoops first. A large part of it is how many new folks there are who haven’t been vetted and mentored and don’t realize how piss poor they are at negotiating. They also have some hollywood idea that every scene will go perfectly with no miscommunications and that kink can be made perfectly safe. When…the point is kind of that it isn’t.
You mean you won’t just agree to be their Christian Grey the first time you meet them?
Fuck no. Now, use to, I’d be up for some pick-up play with someone I just met but I don’t do that any more. Let alone go from Zero to collared in 6 days like some people do.
Heh. I’ve got a story though. Back during Kinkfest I had a woman ask me to tie her up. I didn’t know her, but I knew of her. I told her I’d be happy to discuss it and maybe we could run into one another at Kinkfest and have a sit down. So we do and I start talking and she’s still on trial so to speak, but giving me a bit of the old red flag sensation. When she pulls out this 11 page, single-spaced, front-and-back contract that she requires any top her plays with her to read and sign.
I stared at her for a good five seconds. Looked at the stack of papers. Looked at her again and while the guy in my head is screaming “RUN! RUN! RUN YOU BASTARD THIS FUCKING CRAZY PANTS BITCH IS GONNA SKIN YOU AND WEAR YOU AS A SUIT IF YOU DON’t RUN LIKE FORREST MOTHERFUCKIN’ GUMP! RUN!” I calmly said, “You know, I don’t think are styles are compatible enough for us to both have a good experience. Enjoy Kinkfest” And beat a hasty retreat. It was only after that, that several friends were like, “oh? Her? yeah. she’s batshit. Shoulda warned you.” Fortunately they ran inteference for me the rest of the weekend. God bless those ladies.
Way too many people use all that stuff as a crutch and as some kind of weird…..I don’t even know the word for it. Someone can help me. But basically, it’s not even about rough sex, or about power exchange or whatever. The trappings of SSC and RACK and whatever else they come up with become the point. It’s like they have a rules and bureaucracy fetish.
Yeah. And there’s an element of topping from the bottom too. And too many “tops” that are just so happy to have a woman’s attention they’ll put up with it. I think you hit the nail on the head though, they do have a bureaucracy fetish. IT’s like they are interested in Kafka role-play, not kink and fetish. They want to be kinky without taking the risks because they think it makes them edgy.
“They want to be kinky without taking the risks because they think it makes them edgy.”
Yeah and that’s kind of the thing……50 Shades sold over 125 million copies combined. BDSM themes and imagery abound in the pop culture. When 50 year old housewives are openly discussing the subject, you’re not exactly out on the cutting edge.
Like, it’s not exactly difficult nowadays to find a girl who likes to be spanked, blindfolded, and tied up. Maybe 20 years ago that was genuinely out there, but just like a blowjob went from something only whores did to something only prudes won’t do, it’s pretty hard to find a girl nowadays who’s not ok with at least your intro level BDSM stuff. Maybe not whips and chains, but ping pong paddles and neckties are met with a grin and a sure, not a screech of “you pevert”.
Even 20 years ago it wasn’t all that out there. When dating I got plenty of willing takers when I suggested basic stuff like using a necktie for bondage or slapping her ass or pulling her hair. I mean, you had to discuss it, but now it’s far easier to admit that sounds exciting. I tended to pick my targets back then sot hat explains some of it. I think you are right though.
I think SJWs and the attendant desire to politicize kink + the 50 Shades crowd are driving much of what we’re talking about.
” I mean, you had to discuss it, but now it’s far easier to admit that sounds exciting. I tended to pick my targets back then sot hat explains some of it. I think you are right though.”
I think it’s without question more commonplace. I mean this song was a number one hit on top 40 radio. It’s not exactly “Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch”.
Which is kind of my take: if you’re someone who’s desire for kink is throwing her around, a few light slaps and spanks with the hand, and the occasional harsh language or nonconsent role play……you really don’t need to go to some kink meetup to find someone for that. It’s about as mainstream as joining the mile high club.
“I think SJWs and the attendant desire to politicize kink + the 50 Shades crowd are driving much of what we’re talking about.”
Oh yeah people gonna politicize everything.
“…you really don’t need to go to some kink meetup to find someone for that. It’s about as mainstream as joining the mile high club.”
Yup. 100%. You can do that without the formal scene / community. And if you figure out you want more, then go to the scene and get the education.
I agree. I mean Max Hardcore basically made a career out of raping women in front of a camera and getting away with it because a cameraman and a boom make it ‘porn’.
Completely agree. I would think better, more detailed contracts and scripts would help to dispel any confusion.
You gotta be careful though, the oral sex clause can get a bit sticky
Fortunately it’s got a facial rider.

Yeah, back in the 90s there were some crip or blood gang tags on a dam here, old people were freaking out. But, there were no gangs in this tiny Wisconsin town, just bored kids.
Sargon needs to make shorter videos.
I just ran a bunch of updates, including firefox. I hope that wasn’t a mistake.
I’ve never had a problem w/ ffx browser updates.
(with small exception of sometimes making obscure plug-ins/add-ons obsolete)
windows 10, otoh, i’ve found that it pays to set your automatic update schedule to “metered connection”, so that it gives you like 3 months extra before forcing changes on you. in that time they manage to catch the hiccups caused by the immediate-updates, and you can DL all the fixes along w/ the new build such that it never screws up your world.
Once Firefox decided to change how all of their plugins work, I’m still running the old version. You can have my TabMixPlus when you pry it from my cold, dead hands.
Melania Trump Wears Jacket With ‘I Really Don’t Care’ On It To Visit Immigrant Children
Hard hitting journalism from Huffpo! Actually she didn’t wear it when she was visiting the children, she wore it when she was boarding the plane to leave. Not that it matters.
she’s trolling the shit out of them… I love Melania.

The left has absolutely no sense of self-awareness, right? I mean, especially in regards to item 7 on that list.
I don’t think they understand that this was basically the Nazi inner circle’s list in 1932.
Why would they need to ban all guns if their ideas were so great?
For the record, I’d go along with #7. But this person seems to think that’s not the direction the Dems are going already.
have they run any of that by a judge?

No shit. “Change the law to give the next Republican President much less power” is what he meant to say.

Probably by someone who thinks paying $150/hr for holistic medicine practioners should be covered treatments for Stage IV cancer.
I wonder if we’ll start seeing essentially lifetime payment plans that cannot be discharged in bankruptcy for those who cannot afford to pay upfront. If I or my child was dying of X, and company offered to cure it in return for $500/month for 30 years, I would take that in heartbeat and be thankful such an option exists.
If they exist in the future, life extension treatments for the elderly could be handled the same way. Company XYZ can extended your useful life by 50 years for $15,000 per each of those years.
lifetime payment plans that cannot be discharged in bankruptcy
This would be illegal unless the Federal government enforces it.
I don’t think that would be difficult to make happen. Pharma has very deep pockets.
FROM ALL THEIR IMMORAL PROFITEERING. Deep pockets are why they should be forced to give every drug away for free. Except viagra of course.
Alas, that Derpetologist is not around, for I have found prime, prime derp (from my favorite Canadian source, of course)
This is not America? Oh, yes, it is
Canadians should be banned from talking or writing about America.
MacDonald should be the first on a ‘no write’ list.
Politicians, caught lying, used to at least stop repeating the lie, even if they wouldn’t admit having lied.
And then came Obama who called the people pointing out his lies cynics.
What pisses me off about MacDonald is I believe he was bureau chief in Washington for years. All that time spent over there on tax payer dime and this is the best shit he can come up with?
I want a refund.
All projection. The over-the-top appeal to emotion screeching will not stop until they get open borders so that they can import enough commies to out vote the deplorable. Fuck them. Pay no attention to their gibberish.
How someone didn’t get red carded in the ARG/CRO game I’ll never know. FIFA just can’t get it right. Brutal.
And to make matters more irritating, one of the aggressors – Rebic – ended up scoring the first goal!
Unpoetic justice?
Otamendi for sure should have gotten a red.
Is that the guy who irresponsibly slide tackled with his foot in the air?
He committed a foul, and then kicked the ball at the head of the person he fouled (who was still on the ground).
Well, I saw one where the Argentine defender made no attempt at the ball and basically took a stab with his cleats on a slide tackle. I forget if it was Meza or Tagliafico. Rebic should have been shown red earlier in the game.
Beyond that the ref was lucky it didn’t get out of hand. I guess he did well enough in other areas.
Yeah, the assistant refs came out on the field multiple times.
Not me too
Intel says CEO Brian Krzanich has resigned after the company learned of a “past consensual relationship with an Intel employee.”
“An ongoing investigation by internal and external counsel has confirmed a violation of Intel’s non-fraternization policy, which applies to all managers,” the company said in an announcement on Thursday.
Chief Financial Officer Robert Swan will serve as interim chief executive officer, effective immediately.
A source familiar with the matter said the company has a strict non-fraternization policy that prevents managers from engaging in relationships with employees. Employees who see inappropriate workplace behavior are required to report it to management.
The source said Intel recently learned of Krzanich’s past relationship with an employee.
He violated an established company. That’s how the cookie crumbles. I wonder if losing him will hurt.
Any employee or just directly supervised/in supervisory chain? And was it the policy at the time of the incident?
He should try the Bill Clinton defense.
I prefer the banana peel defense.
“I slipped and just fell into her!”
Worked better than the Costanza Defense

You don’t even thread your own corrections. That is admirable dedication.
This idea that Trump did something out of spite or to feed ruthlessness of his ‘base’ (another word I’ve come to hate thanks to the idiots on the left) is beyond retarded.
It also conveniently overlooks that Obama voters voted for Trump.
So I don’t know how you square that.
False consciousness. Latent racism. Faux News mind control. Hidden Nazis that came out from under the bed once DRUMPF was elected.
Pick your poison.
It’s crazy. He took all the air out of the room politically. Here’s a policy that’s been getting horrible news, and feeding cries of “you can’t reason with Trump, he’s an unfeeling monster!” And then he comes along and does exactly what they asked of him. He ought to have a line of Republicans up for election in November lining up to thank him.
The new spin is he did a peace deal with North Korea because he wants to enrich himself.
These people are exactly the sort of people who are so convinced they’re right but are obviously out to lunch they end up getting ignored. And they don’t like being ignored so they double down on the cra-cra.
Running a quixotic presidential campaign in order to get elected in order to orchestrate a hail Mary diplomatic campaign with a dictator is a pretty convoluted plan for enriching one’s self.
It was nice of the leftists to so promptly acknowledge that they didn’t actually give a shit about any children – they just wanted a stick to whale on Trump with.
It isnt meant to be squared. Emotional appeals and constant claims of ‘this is Trumps policy’ despite it being the same thing Obama did based on law Clinton signed into law. It is all lies all the time. They must figure this is their last chance and are going all in. I have never seen anything like this.
MUH DURG WAR NARRUHTIV
https://coloradopolitics.com/marijuana-teens/
I wonder how much of this is that much of teenage behavior is driven by the idea that forbidden + not something old people do = how cool it is, and now that it is legal they are seeing all sorts of old people doing it and it just doesn’t seem as interesting or rebellious?
Same reason there is much less problem binge drinking at Euro universities than at US ones. It’s been demystified earlier so there’s no rebellious, attractive aspect to it.
I’d go with the black market is drying up. I could score drugs a million times easier than alcohol when I was a teenager.
^^That , too!
Oh, well as long as you feel guilty…
What a fucking coward.

*bows in reverence*
Almost certainly. That organization is way too immature to be able to ramp up production that quickly while still maintaining quality (hahahahaha. *ahem* for certain values of quality).
Wait – are you telling me that hastily putting together a tent-covered assembly line isn’t the hallmark of a quality manufacturer??
That is what I’m saying. Though since I have a Six Sigma belt and have lead Lean implementations I may not be a trust worthy source, according to the morning links discussion.
Or tune in next month. Those fires are hard to put out.
I wouldn’t be terribly surprised if this results in a modest drop in prescription drug prices. Instead of paying $ billions for research, and having to incorporate those costs into the price of existing drugs, they have a way to pay for the research. Plus a pipeline of data for each drug once it becomes approved for “results oriented” medicine. Rather than what we have now, which is essentially FDA approved studies saying the drug does what they say it does, without too many undesirable side effects.
Those evil Icelandic cis-shitlords!
Of course, the idea of a court deciding what names are appropriate raises its own problems….
because Sigríður is only recognized as a female name
well, obviously
For a certain value of “recognized.”
I can’t pronounce that. Your new name is Thundercat.
But his name literally means Hlynur Snow-Bear’s Son.
Fuck Thundercat, I wanna be a goddamn snow bear
This is the kind of shit that makes me laugh when Europeans crow about how free they are and how shitty America is.
I laugh and then say “Net. Migration. Bitch.”
I haven’t read it, but I saw a WaPo headline on the gewgle about how Trump’s new immigration policy is still super mean and horrible.
I suspect it boils down to, “He tricked us!”
I mentioned it overnight, but the Radio NZ RSS feed had the headline “Trump frames separation policy change as ‘solution'”, with “solution” in sneer quotes. It’s an interview with a CNN correspondent.
The only solution they’d be satisfied with is dissolution of the border.
I’m not going to say 27-D chess, but Trump called their bluff and now they look like idiots.
You mean 34DD chess right Q?
You’ve got a reputation to uphold after all.
Coincidence?
I love the interwebz.
Donnie Two Scoops knows how to pick em.
“Bra Size: 34D”
“Dress Size: 6 (US)”

Pick one.
At a minimum.
Tune in tomorrow for the next installment of As The Tesla Burns!
I want to see Musk go full Howard Hughes, and become a paranoid recluse.

Someone should sue SPLC for going around labeling “hate groups”. Oh wait they are! HAHAHAHA!

Pacific Gas and Electric Co. and its parent company, PG&E Corp., warned Thursday that they will record a $2.5 billion charge to cover expected losses from last October’s deadly Wine Country wildfires, saying the utility expects to be held liable for damage from many but not all of the fires.
PG&E also said the $2.5 billion, which will be recorded in the current fiscal quarter, represented the low end of the utility’s potential losses from the fires. Roughly 200 lawsuits have been filed against PG&E seeking to hold the company responsible for damage from the fires, and estimates of the total potential liability range as high as $15 billion.
“The companies are currently unable to reasonably estimate the upper end of the range, because there are a number of unknown facts and legal considerations that may impact the amount of any potential liability,” PG&E and the utility reported in a press release Thursday.
Investigators with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire, have determined that many of the fires that swept across Northern California starting Oct. 8 were sparked by PG&E power lines and equipment either coming into contact with trees or branches during a fierce windstorm or falling to the ground.
That’s gonna leave a mark. I wonder how many people have figured out where that money is going to come from.
They can just tax it from the rich.
The Thomas Fire here in SoCal was also rumored to have been started by the electric company, Southern California Edison.
This tweet from Reason got some enthusiastic replies
Nominating Bill Weld is literally the only way I will vote for Trump.
Uh, that’s probably right.
I couldn’t believe that when I read the editorial at NRO today – absolutely facepalm.
The LP is a suppurating genital wart.
That would more likely get my vote than Bill Weld.
Wow, if Weld is on the ticket…*goes into convulsions*
lol
ℂ???
Sarwak is feisty in that thread!
Too bad he doesn’t go to bat like that for actual liberty and not woketarian, prog-lite BS.
Typical of libertarians, half are screeching that Weld is “a conservative” and the other half are moaning “he’s not a real conservative”
I think him more like that chocolate vanilla swirl of soft-serve you used to get @ Carvel Ice Cream, but which had no actual ice-cream in it.
If they nominated Fudgie the Whale, I might be interested.
How wasn’t it ice cream?
Foster/Cookie Puss 2024!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DOMxm0o12c
its sort of a joke reference to Carvel’s insistence that their soft-serve product was based on a secret ingredient
i mean, even 5yr olds knew ice cream was milk, sugar, cream (and some salt); the “mystery” ingredient was always the source of juvenile jokes. Whale Semen. Beard Trimmings. Pureed kittens. I always ordered the regular (hard) ice cream because i was terrified that there was some radioactive preservatives being pumped out by those machines.
Man, Gilmore, that is some of the best “phrasing!” I’ve seen in a while.
Kinda gives me a warm, funny feeling, way down in my… I’ve said too much.
I have no idea who the latest batch of commenters are at Reason.
But boy they don’t like me!
Of course they don’t. You’re Canadian.
good fuckin’ grief. Go ahead LP. It worked out so well before. He will probably endorse Hillary again.
I thought he was great in Lethal Weapon 2, though.
He should check for plastic.
Don’t forget, the LP claimed that North Korea is more free than the US because reasons pot reasons. The Democrat party isnt the only one that is chock full of lunatics.
I still dont understand the Trump hate. The guy is more libertarian than anyone since T. Jefferson.
Trump’s libertarianism is not by design. It’s an accident caused by him disarming his totalitarian enemies. If he had a sizable block of support in the Federal Government’s executive branch, rather than the almost uniform opposition he faces, we’d be screaming in fear and agony from his policies.
At this point I’ll take “right thing for the wrong reasons” all day over the status quo.
This- wrong thing for “fuck you, shut up, and stay on the plantation”
Someone here mentioned that John McAfee should be the LP nominee. I’d vote for him after watching the documentary on Netflix. that guy is a straight up manipulative sociopath, but he’s at least an entertaining sociopath with some libertarian leanings.
John McAfee is my President.
When I think “limited government”, I think of a hardcore drug warrior prosecutor-turned-Massachusetts politician who is an enormous fan of state power.
Well to be fair, as long as he’s the LP candidate, he sure to be “limited”.

heilsa. This is Icelandic after all. So in my former life as a medievalist I spent some time learning Old Norse. Unfortunately, the only real textbook for that is E.V. Gordon’s and it has limitations. Icelandic is actually quite close to Old Norse (Icelanders can read Old Norse like we read say Shakespeare. It’s archaic but mostly understood)
Since I’m a total genius I decided the OBVIOUS thing to do was teach myself Icelandic since there are far better materials out there for modern languages than dead ones.
Results: My Icelandic and my Old Norse are both pretty shitty.
Good times.
Second wife is mostly Norwegian (six feet of yummy, alloyed with ScotsIrish). We’re planning on visiting some seventh cousins or so over there in 2020.
So I started learning the stuff by taking youtube lessons. My approach is the same as my jazz guitar, which is actually just blues scales augmented by my sense of cool/weird. Said another way, my Norwegian is must so much English and German pieced together.
Most cancerous social media platform:
Facebook? Instagram? Twitter?
Go.
Probably Glibertarians
Yes.
I also vote yes. There is no redeeming value in any of those choices.
I’ve regeletad myself to only Twitter at this point and that’s mostly for catching up on national and world news. I finally quit FB altogether about two months ago and I must say that after the initial separation anxiety passed I’ve found the feeling quite liberating. For me personally, it was the most cancerous.
And while I’ve never had an account there and always found Instagram vain and narcissistic I think it’s mostly benign.
P.S. How’s everyone doing? I haven’t been around too much the last couple of weeks and don’t have the skinny on the latest gossip. I kind of missed you horrible pricks.
I didn’t notice you were gone. :-p
Of course, I generally don’t notice when people are absent for a while.
Ted, I’d be disappointed if you did.
Facebook.
OT, lighter topic:
Anyone here given a best man speech, or been present for a particularly good one? Looking for tips, as I am best man at my oldest college friend’s wedding, am just starting to write the speech now (wedding is in late September) and am struggling. What’s more, I feel like most best man/maid of honor speeches that I’ve seen have been pretty bad (the lowlight/highlight being a friend’s best man starting out his speech with “I’ve been told the best man’s speech should last about as long as the groom does on his wedding night…well, good night everybody!” and being met with dead silence) and almost always deteriorated into the speaker spending more time talking about his/herself. I want to avoid that and do right. I am going to ask friends and family for help, but I’ve always received/seen others receive good advice on this blog. Thanks.
It may be tempting to roast and make sexual jokes, but remember the couple’s grandparents are probably there (if not then their elderly aunt or someone of that ilk). Jokes are ok, but they should be G-rated and then go with something from the heart to wrap it up. And 2 minutes or less. After that everyone stops paying attention.
Heartily disagree. The bastard not only invited you to his wedding (no one wants to go to a wedding. ever.) But he likely made you rent a tux or buy some terrible formal wear, AND you have to get him and his future ex-wife a gift?
Payback time. Get hammered. Tell terrible jokes. Take bets on the exact cause of their future divorce. Proposition a bridesmaid in front of everyone. You have the microphone and they have to listen to everything you say. Go wild.
or don’t
I don’t know. I don’t get invited to a lot of things…
“I know your marriage is gonna last because when I fucked your fiancée last night she said it had to be the last time!”
“Plus, I had her mother earlier in the day. Both are really, really good and should age well.”
My best man made reference to how well behaved I had been since O got early release from prison.
My wifey to be jumped up and said” my husband has never been in prison”.
A good laugh was had by most. The FIL asked later that night which was true.
My best man is my best man partially because of his sense of himor.
If you have a funny or inspirational story about your friend–maybe he did you a really big favor sometime. Tell it and relate it to their new marriage.
Make sure and down like a dozen shots beforehand and then just wing it!
Seriously, please for the love of God keep it sincere, positive and grandmother friendly. Talk about what you like best about the dude and the chick he’s marrying. Stories are good if they are brief and funny. Mention the parents of both (flattery is always appropriate), and wrap it with a decent toast. Play your cards right and you might be pleasantly assaulted by one of the bridesmaids!
Good luck!
Tundra wins.
Yes. My best man followed through with how well we got along and seemed to be team mates in our interactions.
^this.
I’ve had that uncomfortable honor once in my life and in my own clumsy way followed your formula. It was received with murmurs of approval, polite laughter and mild applause; more than I could of honestly expected. It wasn’t good enough to land a bridesmaid but like I said, that wasn’t expected.
On the subject of bridesmaids, when I was in my 20s, one of the expectations was for the best man to compliment and toast the bridesmaids.
Definitely keep it short and to the point. I have heard some rambling, pointless speeches in recent years, and it’s excruciating. You just want to eat dinner and here is some guy droning on and on. Don’t be that guy.
If you drop your pants and begin touching yourself, odds are the guests won’t notice how bad the speech was. 33D chess.
Be sure to mention that you had her first, even if it’s not true.
This is the best Best Man speech I’ve ever heard.
That’s awesome!!
<a href="https://youtu.be/zFxzw7p5u8U?t=2m21s"Another classic
edit fairy?
Also, Practice it a few times. You don’t have to memorize the whole thing but make a note of the highlights and go over them outloud a few times.
Yes, for god’s sake, say the whole thing outloud. You’ll hear yourself say really cringey things that you once thought were brilliant, and it’s best to find out in private, rather than in front of everyone.
Best Best Man’s speech I heard was where he told the story of how the groom told him the bride was the one for him and involved nearly drowning on a scuba expedition, so that was exciting and romantic and a bit funny. She teared up (I don’t think she’d heard it before, or at least not told that way) ,and it wasn’t super long and draggy either.
If you’re really interested, I’ve officiated and given the blessing at weddings (I really don’t know why people asked me). The blessing I gave was:
I’ve been asked to give a blessing at this wedding, instead of giving my own blessing, I would like to ask all of you who gathered here today to help to bless this marriage. As marriages traditionally are the first block of building a community, I’d like this community to promise to help this marriage through any rough spots they encounter. This would include the times when they are fighting over “nothing”, as well as the times they are fighting over something. If you are willing to grant your blessing, and are willing to accept the responsibility to help these two through the rough spots, please say, “We Do.”
Nice speech Hillary.
Everyone there decided to take in the food and alcohol provided, they should pay for it in some way. I’d say showing up to a ceremony includes a bit of approving of what’s going on. And this was a cousin who I hadn’t talked to in over 20 years, and didn’t even want to approve my speech before I gave it. I could have gone much worse.
Stories need to be general access, third grade fables with him as the tortoise or some such.
I’m an acquired taste; my best man told some great lines, basically stealing my own favorite bon mots to describe me; problem was: it was all entirely obscure for her side; they weren’t in on the joke.
I just got into it with some friends of ‘friends’ on Facederp regarding the whole immigration kerfuffle.
My comment was basically that the system that did these horrible things preceded Trump, that the people who were carrying out his orders had been hired years, sometimes decades before, that the policy of how to house children and parents had been developed over decades, that the facilities had been built years before, that the money to pay for it all amounted to hundreds of millions over decades.
I decried how everyone was trying to pretend this was a Trump-introduced aberration rather than a policy that was sensible and supported by people like Hillary Clinton until the wrong person won an election and everyone freaked out.
I predicted that once Trump was gone, people would go back to pretending it wasn’t a big deal.
This FB ‘friend’ is a Bernie supporting uber-prog who got impregnated by a cousin of mine shortly before he died. She’s an art teacher at a private school who thinks that public schools are underfunded and believes in universal health care. Her circle is pretty much just like her.
A huge argument erupted. In the end, they argued that under Obama this sort of thing was only done to children of drug smugglers or other criminals, that the facilities were hastily erected tent cities, and while a handful of detentions was a tragedy, it was understandable.
What was hilarious is that they ended up defending these detentions! They claimed that the only problem was that prosecutors no longer were granted the discretion to decide when to detain and when to release. At that point I had only one interlocutor, who cheerfully claimed to agree with Chomsky that nobody who wanted power deserved it, and who also claimed that so long as it was a prosecutor or border patrol agent making the call, it would be fine and dandy. And yes, he confirmed it when I asked him point blank whether that correctly summed up his position.
And then when I pointed out that he was actually following my predicted course of justifying people who weren’t Trump deciding to do it, he claimed that I was changing the subject.
Why did I even bother?!?
I have a headache just reading your synopsis.
You are talking to useful idiots. Don’t forget your Bezmenov – “No matter how much information you give them they cannot draw a sensible conclusion.” “Even if you take them to Siberia and show them the gulags they will not believe it. When the military boot is crushing their balls then they will believe it, not before.”
I got into it over the black people cant be racist gibberish. I kept pointing up and saying “This is up. The sky is up. It’s blue. See that thing over there *pointing*, it’s a rock. That thing there? It’s a tree. Water flows downhill.”
The response was a bunch of post-modern, marxist gibberish explaining why none of that was true.
You are wasting your breath.
“The response was a bunch of post-modern, marxist gibberish explaining why none of that was true”
That’s the point of post-modernism. You tear down objective reality not to leave it torn down, but to replace it with your own version in which you are in power.
It’s not the point of post-modernism. But it’s how many people use it.
I know. I knew as I was doing it that I shouldn’t but felt a compulsion to try.
While reading your comment, I realized why I felt so compelled. You guys might remember my MIL, who so ardently adored HRC that she knitted a sweater for HRC and mailed it to the HRC campaign HQ. My MIL blocked me on facebook after I systematically tore apart HRC, citing her corruption, policy failures, and authoritarian impulses.
Now my MIL is perfectly civil, and we stay in touch etc. And for the longest time, she was only sharing her political stuff on FB, and my interactions with her were politics free. She’d group text to us in her extended family things such as which of us was experiencing the suckiest weather, her work at the hospital for premature children (she knits them caps to keep them warm and the hospital is always asking for more).
But starting last week, she started texting memes to us. Nobody is responding. Every twelve hours or so we get an obscene meme about Trump hurting babies.
And, for my wife’s sake, I leave the communication channel open, because what if my FIL slips and falls and they need something from us? So I don’t reply, but I fucking stew.
I hate to see someone who is so wonderful consumed by such a misplaced hatred. And so I said what I wanted to say to her to a ‘widow’ I barely tolerate…
It would truly be nice to be the sociopath the proggies claim we are.
There is a fairly recent movie that I cannot remember the name of. In a nutshell it is about a reporter attempting to confirm rumors that Stalin had a son and that son is hidden away and being groomed to take his father’s place. The backstory on the son is that Stalin had his lackeys hand select a young girl to be the mother, impregnated her and then had her murdered and disposed of. After being selected the young girl’s parents are so proud. Later when when the reporter reveals to the girl’s now aged mother what happened the mother refuses to accept it despite knowing it is true and continues in her worship of Stalin and party higher ups.
Fiction, but the girl’s mother character is spot on. I see it every day.
Archangel? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archangel_%282005_film%29
That’s the one.
Because fuck you, that’s why?
There’s no point in arguing principles (or anything even remotely logical) with these people. They are incapable of understanding that:
1. Pointing out that previous administrations did it is not excusing it
2. These examples are made to demonstrate what unprincipled hypocrites they are and is not “whataboutism”
3. Belief in limited executive power (which to them comes and goes depending on who is in office/what the issue is) means Trump can’t really legally do anything about it
4. The immigration system has been a dumpster fire for decades and neither party has had any desire to fix it
I’d say hasty “unfriending” is in order. Better yet, kick Derpbook to the curb permanently.
Better yet, kick Derpbook to the curb permanently.
This.
1. If you’re pointing it out in defense of the current administration, while not excusing it you are excusing them.
2. Hypocrisy is a two-way door, Yes they look stupid for attacking Trump for doing what Obama did, But if Trump is doing what Obama did why isn’t his base attacking him the way they did Obama?
3. fair point
4. fair point
Ignore them (use your scroll wheel). Keep Derpbook, if you enjoy the family updates, friends pictures, and beating your older valedictorian sister in Scabble repeatedly, etc…
What pains me is that if you don’t frame the argument in terms of “Trump is a Nazi” then you could actually get it changed easier. Almost like those assholes care more about virtual signaling then fixing the problem.
Well, the congressional Pubs did actually have a legislative fix for the problem and it was blocked by the Dems. There’s no political advantage to actually solving a wedge issue.
That is very true. Every time they get a choice between holding out an olive branch to their opponents and coming up with a compromise that resolves the problem or waving the flag harder, they choose the flag.
It’s not just a proggie issue. Republicans do it too.
The problem with compromise, esp with proggies on immigration, the proggies will never follow through.
1986 Reagan amnesty 20+ million. Rs gave in Ds ignored or openly defied the security. This is why
we currently have a problem. The 20 million new illegals KNOW they have a better than fair chance
at amnesty.
You caused them momentary discomfort. They won’t admit it, but you did. You did a good thing, and suffered for it. Basically you’re new Gandhi.
You mean sleeping naked with young girls to test your purity?
Pls see below for my thumbs up on your podcast! 🙂
only done to children of drug smugglers or other criminals
It’s ok because of ancestral sin?
Drug smugglers? Well, that makes it Ok! Fucking drug smuggler kids, choosing to be born by drug smugglers.
Why do you love terrorists, HM?
Because Leila Khaled was cute back in the day.
Hey! That’s not Ray Davies!
Since there is no serving wench here to make me a sammich, I am forced to fend for myself: turkey and guacamole on sourdough.
Muy bueno.

Yes. Yes you can.
That’s the sexiest picture you have ever posted.
America As Power-Bottom
Fox News announcing Charles Krauthamer has passed away.
Well, that sucks.
Fuck. Didn’t always agree, but always respected. I’ll drink a few to him tonight.
Damn.
Hey, gbob!
I downloaded the first episode of your podcast, I’m about halfway through, and it’s pretty damn great!
I’m surprised you both enjoyed Domino, Mim Headroom ripped it a new one.
I was also sad, but not surprised, that Squirrel girl is super-retarded even when it’s not Dinosaur Comics idiot writing her. She’s supposed to be a fun, funny, cute character, dammit!
And I’m looking forward to Kelly Thompson bit, I read her A-Force series and she’s the Cringe Queen. Your Gabby Rivieras and G Willow Wilsons just sperg out and cringe volcano all over the place. Thompson knows how to time it for maximum pain to the reader.
Whoops, correct link for Mim Headroom video.
Man, thanks. Means a great deal. Yeah, I’m trying to keep politics out of it for now. My co host is a pretty sensible lady, and I was surprised by how much she liked the book.
I actually liked the Nancy Drew book in the sense that I get it. I’m not the audience and I’m down for the market deciding.
I play pretty neutral for now. I get people like Gail Simone are SJWs, but it’s cool that she wrote something that connected to my co host (as well as liked our pod)
Did Kelly Thompson lay off the cringe for Nancy Drew? The fake teen speak, the horribly mistimed jokes, stupid pop culture references? Shit, she ended what was supposed to be a serious cliffhanger in one of A-Force issues by literally putting “DUN-DUN-DUNNN” in a text box!
It wasn’t even SJWness, it was like watching the UK version of The Office.
There’s some cringe, but I think it worked in regard to the audience. My co-hosts daughter really liked the issue as well.
My role is to me a MC, and set the stage for introducing someone to the world of comics. Well, also to make a marketable product that fans enjoy. I mean, I need some money to buy new orphans.
Bonita Granville was a cutie.
Solid presentation on the whole. As I’ve noted elsewhere, podcasts are not my thang compared to videos, but this is Very well produced and sounds great. No idea if you had to edit out bits and bytes for audio here and there, but it’s far better than my experiences.
Advantage to audio. There were a couple of bits I could cut out. Not too much. Plus, we would take breaks. By the third segment, we’re both drunk off our ass. Thanks for the shout out, by the way.
Finished the whole thing, and yes, I cringed listening to what was in the Nancy Drew comic.
The whole thing was a blast. True crime next time sounds amazing! Also, can we have more co-host singing, please?
First trial run we ever did, she was begging me to cut it out. First issue (where I deleted the data files by mistake) she was actually comfortable with it. (Did this breathy Marilyn like version of “Happy birthday” that was audio porn to my ears). Now I can’t stop her even if I wanted to…and I sure as hell don’t want to.
Next issue we’ll also do a new segment, “Bob’s Long Box” where I’ll whip out some of my favorites. It’ll be a somewhat glib related topic too. Moon Knight #5, where an eleven year old Bob was indignant that his comic was taxed while other periodicals weren’t, and I wouldn’t leave the store until they sold it to me without sales tax. I should have known I would grow up to be a monster right then and there.
When you say True Crime, it’s probably too late for production, but there is a new Mike Hammer book by Max Allan Collins coming out next week from Titan Comics. Added it to my list (I think they did one already this year, but I wasn’t really paying attention).
Surprise!
I see TOS is banging the ‘Trump is a Nazi for tearing babies out their mother’s arms’ drum.
That rag has really gone downhill. I haven’t been there since I found this place and a little before. I got tired of all the SJW / TDS crap.
I still subscribe to the mag: it seems less affected by TDS.
I see Dalmia has an article up on the situation. I didn’t read it but I’ll it’s well written, well reasoned, thoughtful, and not at all unhinged and shrill. How can you people dislike Reason with libertarian giants like her contributing.
We’re white cis-het shitlords? Or yokeltarians. take your pick.
It’s another moment where I want to bang my head. Strip away the TDS, and it’s an argument we all get. It’s another government institution run amok. Doing shitty things. Let’s find ways to make it non shitty. Hell, even an asshole like Ted Cruz had a decent plan.
I miss when TOS was the voice of…what’s that word that’s the opposite of emotion? Whatever it is.
I have a question for Glib Fit and A Leap at the Wheel. I have t-shirts that were tight across my stomach and hips, but now aren’t. Good. But, they now seem tight around my upper arms. Why is that? Is my fat just moving?
Oops, meant to be it’s own thing.
If you’re wearing shirts on your hips, I may see the problem….
Isn’t the problem that she’s wearing shirts?
/this is why there are no female libertarians….
You have better posture or more upper-body muscle?
If you are doing any weights, or something like yoga, your muscles are probably growing. You’re shifting mass, yes, but it is losing fat around the middle and replacing it with muscle in the upper body. I assume women’s shirts have tiny arms so it wouldn’t take much muscle mass to make them feel tighter.
The shirts shrank in the wash, your waist just shrank faster
I’m not doing weights unless you count some weeding. These are old t-shirts, so I don’t think they have shrunk or stretched. It’s just weird.
The recent revelation (not the first time but few pay attention) by Massie about the way committee seats are sold doesnt get the attention it should because few understand the implications.
Congresscritter douchebag holds a fund raiser. The funds raised are given to the national party organization. The more money you raise the better your chances of getting a seat and the more powerful the seat. Who do people think is doing the donating? It’s the fifth column: academics, journalists, community organizers and other activists, lobbyists, etc. By raising money Douchebag gains power and pays close attention to the donor list. By donating the fifth column critters gain access to power. They gain even more access if they hold fundraisers themselves and bundle the donation. This is a huge part of the so called swamp. It is naked corruption. It is a model copied from the Mafia. The ‘donations are nothing more than bribes.
I am not sure how to put a stop to that practice. If Trump really does want to drain the swamp the practice of selling committee seats has to end. How to do that if he has no power over how congress organizes itself? Term limits? He has said he wants them but he has no power over that either. Other than us electing more principled congress critters I dont see how it could be done. We need more Pauls and Massies.
Jokes about cocktail parties aren’t really jokes. There is more going on at those parties than cocktails, froot sooshi and off color jokes about the rubes and deplorables. TOS sold out their principles so the cool crowd wont shun them. They look down their nose at us just like the worst progressives do. Hell, Trump has advanced liberty more than I could have hoped for. That lot? Empty words.
Take away or at least curtail the government’s power.
That is the only solution.
Worse he tells donors which committee seat he wants to buy, so the lobbyists can target the money more efficiently. Basically the committee has been literally purchased by the interests they are “regulating”.
This was the worst news cycle yet for TDS. As soon as you thought it might be ebbing a bit, Tsunami of crazy hits.
Random person with clipboard outside coffee shop: Would you like to sign a petition for cleaner energy?
Hero: Sure, it’s about time we get rid of the regulatory barriers to getting more nuclear power plants online. Where do I sign?
Random person with clipboard outside coffee shop (takes a couple steps back): Actually, that’s not what this is about.
You really need a Valerie Perrine avatar.
Uh-oh, it looks like the ACLU might be ready to go squishy on free speech:
https://reason.com/blog/2018/06/21/aclu-leaked-memo-free-speech
They’ve already largely discarded the 2nd, why not the first?
Their confidential memo stating their defense of free speech is harming their equality message gets leaked. Oh boy.
TW: to be sure
Equality is a huge commie hobby horse. Free speech is a huge burr under the commie saddle. I am just shocked to find out which the ACLU is giving more weight to. Shocked I say!
…the organization will consider “factors such as the (present and historical) context of the proposed speech; the potential effect on marginalized communities; the extent to which the speech may assist in advancing the goals of white supremacists or others whose views are contrary to our values…
“We will only defend speech we agree with”
Double shock!
It’s nice what you’ve always suspected put in writing though.
“nice to see”
I love the idea of the ACLU.
We desperately need an ACLU.
I hate the actual ACLU.
So is there anything sadder then trying a flight at a new brewery and finding nothing exceptional?
Drinking Cobra on a Thursday night because Broke?
You and your nimble fingers….
Finding out that flight is really just Bud Light, Miller, Coors, Natty Light and King Cobra?
That would be funny as Hell to do to a bunch of Hipsters
So… there was a place in the Linq shopping area of Vegas that had a flight option. Bud Light was one of those options.
Really? I’ll have to check it out next time I’m in Vegas. I go at least once or twice a year.
Go to downtown, go to Banger best brewery I’ve found in Vegas.
If you’re looking for decent cheap beer near the strip, then Ellis Island’s beer is decent, and was under $3 a pint the last time I was there.
I don’t think that’s sad, I think that’s indicative of your well-developed taste! On the bright side, it’s a good thing that new breweries are so common that one might have an ordinary flight of beer! Moar breweries!!
Mix Cobra with Coffee, Voila! Stout!
That… that makes me die a bit inside.
In CO a black and tan is made with Coors…
Never done it, never Would, but talk about Irony,
Cobra Stout
Coors Light IPA
Bud Porter
Buzz Beer?
OOOOHHH Spud!
Burger King pulls World Cup ad promoting sex with players.
Meh. https://japantoday.com/category/world-cup/burger-king-pulls-world-cup-ad-promoting-sex-with-players
“It’s the children who suffer… and have suffered since the Soviet era. It’s lucky if they’re the same race (as the mother) but if they’re of another race, it’s worse.”
I thought communists weren’t racist.
Those fuckers are the most racist of all.
A bunch of proggish media outlets are running these stories about how “Trump objects to immigrants and claims “people who want economic migration for their personal financial benefit, and what they think is their family’s benefit, is not a basis for a claim of asylum” (that’s technically quoting sessions, but no matter)
this is the characterization:
” Trump allies are employing a tactic they’ve long used to obfuscate, evade, and blame-shift: they’re falling back on semantics.”
Multiple people have acted as tho this is the adminstration’s inhumane opinion: They don’t think *people who are literally starving* qualify for asylum! OMG OMG OMG OUTRAGE
This makes a lot of sense, provided you have no fucking idea what the hell “Asylum” means in terms of US law, and what its very-specific requirements are. If you’re not a member of a specifically (and acknowledged by State dept) persecuted group of some kind (based on race, religion, political affiliation, or some other non-economic issue), you don’t qualify as an asylum seeker at all. “BUT I REALLY WANNA” isn’t the basis of the UNCHR Convention on Asylum either.
The media routinely fucks around with terms like “refugee”/”asylum seekers” when the category of law they fall under in most cases is “migrant”. Refugees have to come from one of a limited # of countries already on a list….
Words mean things, at least around here, sadly, propaganda Rules all……..
The media is next to worthless when it comes to actual legal questions, particularly when it concerns politics.
There coverage when Obama droned an American citizen was more concerned with how it would affect his legacy than the legalities of it.
Because it’s not about immigration at all for the dem pols and media. They hate Trump, they hate not have full power over others, they hate themselves. If bashing immigrants hurt Trump, they’d start doing that in a nano second. They have no objection to bashing individuals based on the group they’re in. All depends on the group.
e.g. 2014 refugee proposal
https://www.state.gov/documents/organization/219137.pdf
and refugees are given a limited # cap, while asylum seekers are not.
We let in 10s of 1000s in refugees and asylum seekers annually, but we also process 100s of 1000s of legal immigrants every year (don’t remember exact #s, but its somewhere around 600K )
People who pretend (like Welch in his recent article) that because we’re not constantly expanding our refugee intake, that something is horribly wrong and broken, ignore the fact that we hardly ever stop taking in people, and the numbers the US takes in is *mammoth* compared to most countries around the world. Europe is freaking out because they took in a few million (like, fewer than 3) in the last few years, but the us has taken in 10s of millions and it hardly merited complaint until the last 10yrs. And while its a hot-button political topic, the reality is that people really aren’t so outraged about it as you might imagine. The “far right” who is most frothy about the topic may fuel a lot of heat on the internet, but i think “the wall” and the media battles about migrants is really more symbolic than it is genuine grassroots concern. as noted elsewhere – obama basically ran a deportation system no different than Bush or Trump, and (yes a few articles were written complaining about it) nobody in the Democrat party said boo for 8 years as tho it were a problem.
I suspect what will happen is that some day soon (before 2020) trump will wave some stats around showing some *modest decrease* in illegal immigration (mostly probably organic), and declare it a huge victory, and most ppl on the right will be sated that ‘something is being done’. Meanwhile the left will screech that this is literally Nazi policy and the worst thing that has ever been done in human history. the reality will be ‘hardly anything fundamental has changed at all’
and of course, new people are tweeting about the horrors of US immigration law, while posting *pictures of Iraqis fleeing mosul*
i’m all for freedom of movement and all that, but i think if you’re that dumb, you should at least be temporarily exiled to like, greenland for a year.

“the US takes in is *mammoth* compared to most countries around the world”
That’s definitely true. And I agree with what you wrote. But it ignores two things.
Firstly, more people want to come to the U.S. than any other country. Pretty much every person in the entire Third World would rather live in the U.S. than where they are now. No other country has millions and millions of people banging on their door year after year.
Secondly, not only to most other nations have stricter immigration policies than the U.S., they have way simpler policies. (“No” is pretty simple to understand.) They actually enforce those policies. Whereas the U.S. has both ridiculously complex policies that vary from country to country (there is confusing mess for Mexico, a completely different incomprehensible boondoggle for Cuba, etc.) and is completely haphazard in enforcing them.
quibble: ‘third world’ is a cold war term for ‘neither communist nor capitalist’. i know you mean, “less-developed world”, but consider dropping the term to spare my annoying pedantry in the future.
not sure how true that really is; sure, very many do. But almost 1/2 now are currently coming from *china and india* (‘asia’); which aren’t really the 3rd world at all.
scroll down and see where people are coming from
https://www.dhs.gov/immigration-statistics/yearbook/2016/table2
asians have been outpacing hispanics since 2010; yet the immigration panic you hear about is almost exclusively latino.
Just like above “migrant vs. asylum vs. refugee” conflation, the media is utterly retarded about misconstruing the issue.
also the rate of intake/outflow is more or less unregulated as it stands today; frankly we’ve never seen the sort of “‘hordes of unwashed poors’ showing up on our shores” scenario.
I think some people’s nightmares about “immigration getting vastly worse (higher)” is actually unlikely, because frankly its been more or less open door for the last few decades.
*yes, i know its easy to come, but not easy to get green card or papers, but my point is that the ‘worst case’ reality (from the POV of restrictionists) is what we have now – not some envisioned future dystopia.
I agree w/ you basically about needing a simpler system. I also sort of think Razorfist hit on a very true, “open secret” sort of point when he said, “we don’t have an immigration problem; we have a MEXICO problem”
iow, its not the “immigration issue” we need to solve; its the fact that our next door neighbor is a corrupt, criminal shithole which sends all its poorest over here so we can deal with them, while everyone else robs the country blind.
There’s a reason politicians never talk about Mexico, and why they never use the sort of bluster like the way they talk tough about “China”
Massive portions of China and India still meet 3rd world standards. Most of SE Asia, Africa and S. America do as well. It’s still a perfectly acceptable term – I’ve yet to hear an acceptable analog.
“3rd world standards”
see below.
My point is that the term never meant anything about the economic wealth or prosperity of a country. The way the term is used now is a replacement for “undeveloped or developing-nations”; but that’s never what it meant. (although many countries considered 3rd world WERE very poor/undeveloped at the time, it wasn’t necessary for that status)
i am hopelessly pedantic about this and i know the term has been abused for so long that its futile to try and convince people otherwise, but its just this thing that perpetually nags me, much like the way people toss around the term “Neocon” as a synonym for ‘Warmonger’, when in fact there have been warmongers for many decades who would have (or did) hate everything about neoconservative ideas. If anything it makes it seem as tho they’d cornered the market in ‘intervention’ when in fact they’re just one of a half-dozen very-interventionist camps in the FP world.
** ‘neither communist nor capitalist’.
technically that’s not exactly correct either. It was ‘affiliated w/ neither NATO or COMBLOC’ in terms of economic+security relations.
e.g. Iraq+Syria were affiliated w/ soviets in 1960s-1980s; Egypt and Saudi arabia were aligned w/ US. ( i think egypt flip flopped via Nassar? can’t remember); other nations in the region who had no direct ties to either would have been called “3rd world'” because they weren’t beholden to either superpower. It indicated nothing about their actual economic status. the 3rd world is where lots of US money went to help *prevent* emerging socialist revolutions/insurgencies, etc. A la Vietnam.
I think you’re conflating 3rd World with NAM (Non-Aligned Movement). Maybe they coincided in part, but I’ve never heard 3rd world used for anything other than economic development levels – in academia, politics, normal discussion, etc.
“not sure how true that really is; sure, very many do. But almost 1/2 now are currently coming from *china and india* (‘asia’); which aren’t really the 3rd world at all.”
Ignoring whether those are “Third World” countries or not. They are way less developed than the U.S. But they aren’t the poorest countries. As there is a difference between wanting to come to the U.S. and being able to get here. Getting across the ocean costs more than many people have.
Sure, which is basically my point about why i think many people have misconceptions about the possibility of some fictional ‘unregulated’ immigration producing some tidal wave of teh poors.
We already get lots from Latin America, and there’s little preventing them. If there’s a worst-case scenario, its current-border policy, not some dystopian future.
I’m not sure what (if anything) about my general point you’re disagreeing with.
I wasn’t so much disagreeing with you. “That’s definitely true. And I agree with what you wrote.”
My point is that U.S. immigration policies are ridiculously over-complicated as written, and then interpreted and enforced depending on sun spot activity, the price of bananas, and the size of the President’s dick, making them nearly chaotic in practice.
yeah, i got that, its just i wasn’t clear what the significance of the “ignores” bit was re: the wider point
i think we’re on the same page, more or less, regardless.
the thing i think is so often missed is that while the “latin/caribbean’ countries continue to be a significant source of illegals, they’re really a shrinking part of the overall picture. and – for reasons like you mentioned – they tend to be far closer to the median-income levels of the average US household Maybe that doesn’t matter to many immigration opponents, but you’d think it would cheer the people who think some brown horde of Messicans is going to reconquista the southwest.
*the number i was thinking of was “persons naturalized per year” – iow, granted legal permanent residence
https://www.dhs.gov/immigration-statistics/yearbook/2016/table21
we admit larger #s of legal immigrants annually, but many leave, and many don’t apply for naturalization
the number naturalized is often ppl who have been in the US for decade or more. but the point is that is the ~ rate at which we’re adding new citizens. nearly 1m a year.
OK you sound like me and A/C, chill bro….

“Professor: Learning Math Can Cause ‘Collateral Damage’ to Society
“Reasoning without meanings provides a training in ethics-free thought,” Paul Ernest writes in “The Ethics of Mathematics: Is Mathematics Harmful?” — a chapter of his book The Philosophy of Mathematics Education Today.
In an abstract for the book, Ernest claims that although he does “acknowledge that mathematics is a widespread force for good,” “there is significant collateral damage caused by learning mathematics.”
According to Ernest, this “collateral damage” happens in three ways. First, he argues, the styles of thinking involved with mathematics are “detached” and “calculated” ones, which value “rules, abstraction, objectification, impersonality, unfeelingness, dispassionate reason, and analysis” — which he claims “can be damaging when applied beyond mathematics to social and human issues.”
The second problem, he explains, is that “the applications of mathematics in society can be deleterious to our humanity unless very carefully monitored and checked.”
“Money and thus mathematics is the tool for the distribution of wealth,” he writes. “It can therefore be argued that as the key underpinning conceptual tool mathematics is implicated in the global disparities in wealth.”
Finally, Ernest claims, “the personal impact of learning mathematics on learners’ thinking and life chances can be negative for a minority of less successful students, as well as potentially harmful for successful students.” Ernest continues to explain that math is often viewed as “masculine,” and that that can essentially make it difficult for women to deal with learning it.”

The dude has a Ph.D. in Mathematics. I’m guessing his essay was cherry-picked for out-of-context quotes for Yokel Buzzfeed click-bait.
I mean, he is perfectly correct when he writes, “rules, abstraction, objectification, impersonality, unfeelingness, dispassionate reason, and analysis” — which he claims “can be damaging when applied beyond mathematics to social and human issues.'” This is the whole thing behind the abortion lowers crime rates theory. If we just look at the cold, hard quantitative data, one could surmise that we could drastically reduce crime by forcing all Black pregnant single women who live below the poverty line to get an abortion. Yet, for the individual who is not on the autism spectrum, such a policy is immediately recognized as horrific.

So why the hell is Thai food so expensive?
Though a couple bucks more than Chinese food, I don’t think it is ‘expensive’. Personally I would put it down to quality and competition.
Thai food tastes a lot better than takeout Chinese and there are far fewer places that do it.
But right, just based on racism/prestige, one would expect thai food to be even cheaper than chinese.

It’s not as bad as the Holocaust comparisons, but it’s still overegging the pudding, imo. Even if you believe the government should be agnostic when it comes to migration (neither subsidize or prohibit), the reasons people migrate matter and are not fungible. There is not institutionalized slavery in Mexico. At best, you could compare this to the Irish during the Potato famine.

I realize the passing of Charles Krauthammer was noted above, but worth a read. RIP.
Charles Krauthammer, who died Thursday at about 5 p.m. ET, announced his impending departure from this world in the straightforward, clear-eyed, elegant manner that fans had come to expect from him. The loss to America is dwarfed by the loss to his family and friends, but nevertheless it is enormous.
Especially at this time. The nation is deeply divided. Americans are having difficulty separating fact from fiction. Today’s debates lack the intellectual rigor and civility that Charles championed in his columns, his appearances on Fox News, and his many speeches and essays. When Donald Trump emerged on the political scene, Charles was no cheerleader. But after the election, Charles insisted on treating Mr. Trump with the fairness and respect due the president of the United States. Still, he kept watch for dangers to the institutions the Founding Fathers put in place—the “guardrails” that constrain any president’s behavior.

Fun fact: Japanese people have no idea what an “Atari” is despite it being a Japanese word.
Another fun fact: Atari is a term from the Japanese game of Go; it refers to a situation where two formations are both in jeopardy and one or the other will inevitably be taken in the next turn – it’s somewhat analagous to occurrences in chess where you will lose one of two pieces and you just have to decide which one you will sacrifice.
Akira; that’s a double atari. Plain old atari is just one stone or group of stones that’s one move away from being captured.

“I live in a border state”
Yeah I’m sure Laura Bush is often personally affected by all the illegal immigrants.
This is how Trump won: the elites of both parties are completely unaffected by illegal immigration’s negative aspects. They and their families and friends simply don’t actually have to deal with things like school systems overburdened with ESL students, or with higher crimes, or with declining property values.
Oh wait, I’m racist for even believing that illegal immigration can have both positive and negative effects.
Yes, it’s such a burden for a school to teach English.
Because I’m drunk and
hornyornery, I’ll add this. People act like it takes a Cray Supercomputer to teach a kid English. What drives up school budgets are many of the kids (native-born or otherwise) in special ed. Because of Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) language of section 504 of the Individuals with Disabilities Act, a school district has to provide an education for any child, even if they require the most expensive adaptive equipment. So you have these kids that are basically human vegetables, and regardless of the taxbase, a particular school will have to supply this kid with his or her own aide, communication equipment, perhaps even a wheelchair. So, no, ESL is hardly a “burden”. One doesn’t get to complain that them immigrants don’t assimilate, and also complain about offering the service that assimilates them.Well, taking care of the disabled is actually a boon to the local school budget. The feds subsidize all that as long as the proper forms are filed, usually more than it costs to actually do so. That’s why my local school district is actually going out of it’s way to bring in disabled students, FEDERAL FUNDING FOR THE WIN!
From what I understand, it really doesn’t work that way. Under IDEA, at most, the Feds will foot 40 percent, and it doesn’t go directly to a local school district. All Federal education money is disbursed to the individual States, which then disburse funds per their state laws. So, yes, more SPED students will increase funding, but at the state level.
My mom was an aid for 20 years. They had forms to fill out and the district would get reimbursed beyond what was spent on the child through various programs, like madicaid, disability and such.
Right. Medicaid, if I remember correctly, works the same way. The Feds disburse the money to the States, which then disburses them to the municipality. But regardless of how the money gets there, my point was that because of FAPE, there are still SPED children that are so expensive that even after the federal aid, the cost of the child to the school district is still extremely burdensome.
I dunno all about it, this is just what my mom said after doing it more than a decade, every kid the district got reimbursed more than they spent. And they took in kids that were basically vegetables.
Hey, I don’t hate the player, I hate the game! I believe you that your mom’s district was lucky enough to find a way to game the system. It really is district by district and what the taxbase is. I also have an anecdote about a SPED kid and how a school had to foot the bill for his autism robot.
So much this. Though, it should be done voluntarily of course.
Yeah teaching a native English speaker grammar is totally the same as teaching a non native speaker the entire language. There’s no difference whatsoever.
You really want to go down this path with me, of all folks on here?
You might provide a clearer answer to an admittedly ill posed but real question.
I normally get around 4,000 dollars to provide instruction in Intro. to Second Language Acquisition Theory. But, because I like you, I’ll give you a freebie. First, start with this for background. Then, I’ll take the liberty of quoting one of the greats in the field of SLA, myself:
Likewise, the Interactionists (namely Michael Long and Stephen Krashen), regardless of their stance on UG, agree that second language (L2) acquisition proceeds in the same manner as first language acquisition – in fact, when it comes to L2 pedagogy, Krashen advocates the “Natural Approach”, in which L2 is taught in the same manner as was taught the L1. Why it may seem different is because, and I’ll quote myself again:
Please tell me if I need to clarify anything…though I’m East Coast and I don’t know how much longer I’ll be online as it’s well past my bedtime.
Nevertheless, my original point was not about the process of language acquisition, but that ESL just requires a classroom, textbooks, and a teacher – just like any other subject. Band, Track, and a whole host of other school activities require more specialized and burdensome resources from a school than an ESL class.
HM- is L2 acquisition different for children vs adults? Does the Natural Language approach effectiveness taper/change with age?
(Not really related to what started this above; just curious about that.)
Good question. I specialize in adult L2 acquisition, and I have found that in some ways it is different. Everyone has had the experience where kids seem to pick up languages like a sponge, but adults struggle. The Critical Period Hypothesis argues that some sort of neural pruning happens at around 12 or 13 where the brain kind of closes up the language acquisition device (LAD). Now, of course this doesn’t mean that it’s impossible for someone to learn a second language after 13, but the acquisition of new phonemes, in particular, seems to be more difficult. That having been said, adults (in general) are better at kids in learning new grammar and vocabulary because they have the critical thinking skills to analyze the grammatical forms of their L1 and compare them to the L2, and with vocabulary it’s easier to explain that the English word for “globnorb” is “macroeconomics” than to have to get a kid to first understand the concept of macroeconomics first, and then connect that concept to two words in parallel language systems.
Now, that having been said, Krashen does advocate that adults learn “like” children in the Natural method. I believe he would argue that the effectiveness of the Natural method, per se, doesn’t taper off with age as much as our memory and general ability to learn tapering off with age (see Hakuta and Bialystok, of which I’m too tired to find and link). At this point, I’ll just mention that Krashen, even though he’s like 80 something, still practices martial arts and is quite good from what I hear.
No need for footnotes or references! Working on my own L2 (or maybe L3/L4) so I find this sort of thing interesting. I do notice more difficulty in learning & retaining information (not just language) than I remember (or perhaps misremember) as a kid.
I was at a bookstore in Fukuoka and was marveling at the large foreign language section, particularly English, and a big part of it was graded readers. I don’t see as much of that available for other languages here. My impression of the foreign language material I’ve used (either in a class or purchased privately) is it’s vocab memorization based with more emphasis on growing your vocab, rather than practicing it. I wish there was more graded reader type to use a certain amount of vocab repetitively.

The news cycle moves to fast for me, I’m still on the last thing before this thing.
Fed gov employee commits assault, posts political content on taxpayer time, nothing happens.
State employee posts personal (offensive) opinion on her own Facebook page, is immediately placed on leave pending an investigation.
Guardsman off duty on his own time says illegals are lucky they aren’t shot, is misrepresented & disciplined publicly.
I’m so glad I got out back in the dirt age and am no long part of that baboon led organization. Adjutant General boning his lady friend right up the ranks? Pepperidge Farm remembers.
Woah, woah, woah! Saying “illegals are lucky they aren’t shot” is a bit different than saying “they’re lucky we aren’t executing them”. The first implies immigrants being shot after refusing an order to halt and a border cop giving chase, the latter is some Yugoslav Wars shit.
I just picture this as your reaction/racist.
That was my reaction – but anime style.
Also, I’ll give 1000 dollars to any man who can acquire that M&M windbreaker for me.
Close enough?
Yes, you’re right, my paraphrasing is wrong also. It’s still not the same as claiming that he was calling for executions.
True. Though I will note that of course he’s MP.

‘Roseanne’ spinoff: ABC picks up ‘The Conners,’ minus Roseanne Barr
. Sure, why not?
