The day Ramadan was over, she barged into the medical department and demanded to have the med times changed back immediately, then she made a sad pouty face when I told her that she doesn’t have an appointment and she’ll have to fill out the health services request form in order to get one.
She would also pretend to not speak English, but you’d catch her speaking damn near perfect English with other inmates when she thought the staff couldn’t hear her.

The difference in latitude is pretty negligible, the main things about Laramie are the elevation and the wind. It’s all the way up at 7500 feet (as opposed to 5000 for FoCo) and, for some reason, it seems like the wind NEVER stops blowing there. That’s what makes it so frigid all the time.
That said, I love Laramie and would live there in a second.

I had a crazy one-on-one class today with a 7th grader. This is about my 3rd time teaching him and first time by himself. The kid is a boss. Amazing accent and just has natural confidence in himself/his English that the other kids simply do not have. Koreans are largely terrified of speaking English. Turns out he lived in Vietnam for 3 years and went to school at a Canadian International School. Makes a lot of sense. He’s gonna go far. That understandable fear of sounding stupid in a different language has been expelled and we really just shot the shit for like 20 minutes of the class.
Leaving your country/comfort zone is such a powerful way of learning, be it an actual skill or a way of thinking/being. The homogenous-ness of Korea does them no favors, and I’m very glad that it’s gotten so much better in the last decade. Always be exploring Just like in physical space where one explores food and landscapes and people, it’s also applicable to thoughts and beliefs. It’s very weird living in a country that doesn’t have political group think, but straight-up cultural group think. (They imprison the shit out of their presidents. I am so jealous. Their love of the rule-of-law is still strong in them. Sigh. We culturally lost that long ago.)

I’m pulling this right out of my ass—My guess is that the culture of hierarchy and cultural obligation sort of gnaws at their soul. Korea is an incredibly non-violent country, and I’m guessing that violent media is sort of an escapism for them to experience shit that they kinda want to do themselves.

In fact, a delayed announcement would be similar to what happened with David Petraeus in 2012 when DOJ sat on announcing that investigation until three days after the election.
Now, back to January 20, 2017. Could a future President Hillary Clinton pardon herself?
The short answer is she could certainly try, and may very well get away with it. What’s more, there is likely little Congress could do about it — even with a Republican controlled House of Representatives and Senate. Here is why.
The president’s pardon power comes from Article II, Section 2 of the United States Constitution that provides, “The President … shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.”
Based on the language of Article II, Section 2, the only limits placed on the power are that pardons may only be issued for federal offenses (not civil or state crimes), and a pardon cannot override the Congress’ impeachment power. Comic book movies, remakes of comic book movies, remakes, prequels and sequels, more remakes of remakes is all I see. I see Jurassic Park #59, Star Wars #37, Star Trek #104 plus a hundred remakes are about to be released. What a fuckin’ snoozefest.

True. It is all there in the Greek classics. Never the less there are new and interesting ways to tell old stories. Aren’t they supposed to be smart, creative types? Look at ‘Jaws’. They had all been told in 1975 too. *ducks*
That’s what is so frustrating. Even in the genres that I read (mostly fantasy and science fiction, with some historical fiction), there are hundreds of stories that wouldn’t be hard to adapt to the big screen (and, of course, hundreds more that would be harder to translate). There is no shortage at all of good stories to be told. Hell, a decent director and producer could spend their entire, very successful careers just doing David Gemmel stories, and that’s just one author.
Plus, I think a lot of the talent has been leaving the movie biz for video games and TV.
The best story telling at this time is long-arc TV on both the premium cable channels and the cable-only channels (see FX with Justified, the Americans, etc).
I have given up on movies. I rarely record them even though I have HBO and Showtime. I record the original programming from those channels instead.
I agree on the long arc TV, with the caveat that this format is prone to padding and not quitting while its ahead. Still, I watch a lot more hours of these series than I do of movies.
Yes, knowing when to quit is one of the sign’s of real talent.
But even when they drag on, it’s better than the 45 minute CGI shit-show finale that has taken over the movie business.

Yes, my wife (who likes comic book movies) talked me into seeing that one and it was funny, I have to admit. Still pretty dumb, but entertaining.
I just was never into comic books, even as a kid, or really any kind of fantasy story.
Superhero stories are just government propaganda. I nearly gave up comic books when I figured that out at age 12 – the ’70’s was a great time for giving the finger to government propaganda.
I would generally be OK with SciFi except that every successful book/movie eventually becomes a “franchise” which always winds up being taken over by the superhero comic book folks who ruin the original vision. Howard The Duck is one of the earliest examples.
Pretty much. There’s a few I’ll watch at home, but the vast majority? Pass.
I’ve been thinking of this question while at work, and there have been some good original films to come out in the past decade. Ex Machina, Arrival, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, the Lego Movie (seriously), Wall-E, Looper, and Shutter Island are some that hit most of the genres. No comic book movies, no prequels, no sequels, no remakes.
Honestly, the movies I have enjoyed most in the last decade have been disproportionately animated movies. Just off the top of my head, Isle of Dogs, Up, The Incredibles, I’m sure there are others.
My theory: nothing wrecks a movie like a Hollywood star.

The thing that was lame about Ghostbusters is that there were ways to do it with women that would have been just fine and still incorporated the original. Something like: the Ghostbusters have been defunct for a while (quit after Egon died, for example) and Peter Venkman’s niece wants to revive them, so she buys the equipment from him and Ray and opens them back up. You get your new female Ghostbusters plus you could have smaller roles for the original guys as they give the new Ghostbusters initial training or advice or something. Just show some creativity rather than just trying to tell the same story only with four women instead of four men.

The studio made it the focal point of the marketing Ghostbuster with chicks if it was funny or even okay the studio would have won. But it wasn’t, it was one of the worst high budget movies I’ve ever seen. I honestly have no idea how they deluded themselves into thinking they had a good product there, and it’s a shame because they had decent talent making it. It was just a giant turd.
Of course it was a lousy movie. A lousy movie with Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver, Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, and Rick Moranis plus a fantastic supporting cast. The story itself was boring and dumb as hell. Remaking it with hacks and the ‘twist’ of switching genders was moronic.

well it was dialogue driven. So having an interesting cast that makes it work is key.
I remember watching a making-of type show about Ghostbusters where William Atherton said that people were being nasty to him on the street because they hated Walter Peck so much. Now THAT’S what you call nailing a role.
The other thing is that comedy movies become unwatchable when given a massive budget. Unless you have the vision of a Buster Keaton, throwing all sorts of technology into a comedy movie is the exact wrong way to do comedy. It crippled the original Ghostbusters and got in the way of the comic actors; jacking up the tech budget and putting in generic actresses is what a coke-snorting MBA thinks is entertainment.
When I was young the trend for a while was to take existing programmes and make the characters kids. Stuff like Muppet Babies, A Pup Named Scooby Doo etc. That’s all this looks like to me.
There’s nothing particularly advanced about taking male characters and making them female. All that really suggests is that you don’t find feminine characteristics interesting enough to write about.

Me too. I always laugh when people around here talk about conserving water. There are rain barrels all over the place. Meanwhile, the Chesapeake Bay watershed has nothing like a shortage of groundwater, not even close. We’re silly with the stuff. It’s not quite swampland where I am, but it’s damned close, and we’ve got wetlands all over the place. Maybe half the year the ground is completely saturated.
In Cali, my understanding is that the reason they have water shortages so frequently is because the state subsidizes agricultural water use in order to keep prices down and make California crops more competitive. Since they don’t have to bear as much of the cost, farms don’t sweat water use the way residents and non-ag businesses do, and the result is that there’s less water for the rest of the state.
That and a shortage of reservoirs and keeping the rivers flowing for smelt…
That and southern California is a fucking desert where millions of people decided to live.

My wife trains for half marathons. During training, she will often gain upwards of 8 pounds because she carb loads for the longer runs. Also, the stress on her body (she’s 42) means that her body tends to ‘hoard’ resources.
Once she slows down training and just runs a few miles a week (not 26 per) she loses the weight.

OT: So, my C&R is being processed and I hope to have it by my 40th in August. As my birthday coincides with a wedding in which my wife is a maid of honor, I have scads of guilt dollars to spend. I’m hoping to pick up my first C&R purchase around then, and I’m torn between the following three pistols: a Tokarev (Russian or Polish), a Makarov, or a CZ-82. Anybody have any experience with these? Any advice? I’m in Maryland so I can’t carry, which means that size isn’t really a consideration. Also, as I understand it the C&R eligible models of those guns all use Soviet bloc rounds, so for instance I couldn’t get the Mak in .380, not that I’d want to.
Out of those 3? I’d chose the CZ82 – better sights, 12 round capacity, & CZ quality.
I’m eventually going to pick up an example of all three, but I was leaning towards the CZ or the Mak, and probably more towards the CZ for the reasons you mention. Plus, it looks like 9×18 is cheap, even if I want to pick up some fancy Hornady Critical Defense or something similar.

Aside from the huge tell that they use “precautionary principle” as if its a good thing, when you are talking about clinical or therapeutic use of anything, you should test it for efficacy first. Its got nothing to do with the precautionary principle. Plus, they get the precautionary principle wrong. Its not about proving efficacy before use, its about proving lack of harm before use. In short, not one single thing in the sentence isn’t wrong.
I still say that the precautionary principle is self-invalidating, as by its own terms you shouldn’t use it until it has proven to be harmless, and no such proof is at hand.
If we consider “changing societal norms” in the context that the majority of sexbots are aimed at adult males, that raises a vital question: Who we are changing society for?
