Like I’ve argued here and at TOS, why would ostensibly ‘libertarian’ commentators throw religious liberty under the bus? It’s one of the few things that makes the US truly freer than other countries. It allows people to not be ordered by the government to do something that violates their faith- thus establishing that the government is NOT God (unlike in Europe where the Cult of the State is in full bloom). And who is covered by “religious liberty” has been expanded by the courts to include Pastafarians and other newer faiths. “Not so”, I was always told by some “it only protects Christians and other established faiths”.

There is one real reason for a service member to be clean-shaven; in an NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) environment, a protective mask will not seal on a bearded face. That could easily be fatal.

I don’t know if I qualify as one of the deplorables who would throw religious freedom under the bus, but I probably am not nearly as strong a defender of it as some. A couple reasons:
1) A child hood filled with religious nuts who were gung ho on banning fun stuff or like my 5th grade science teacher publicly shaming me for not believing in God (I argued with him about evolution). Hard to feel sorry for those assholes getting forced to do shit they don’t want to after they have forced me to do shit for years. Intellectually I get it, but the schadenfreude makes me happy.
2) Why the fuck should I have to pretend to believe in some imaginary deity in order to avoid having the govt not be able to force me to violate my conscious?
To me religious freedom means you should be able to go worship (or not) however you want. What irritates me is that it is used to carve out exceptions to the rules everyone else has to follow. In my libertopia, we’d either decide everyone has to be clean shaven or we’d realize that there isn’t a good reason for that rule and everyone could grow a beard. If the rule exists for a reason, why give out exceptions just because of who you worship?

This is just across the bay from me. Second fire started just after noon. The 20 mph winds probably aren’t helping. Evacuation area is 10 miles south (wind is blowing south) and 3 miles east or west. After all these years, I expect myself to be numb to the stupidity and evil of other people. This, however, sparks my fire.
My daughter died in my arms after a very, very short life. I was advised by some not to continue treatments. I chose to buy that extra time no matter what the cost. I’m still paying, nearly two decades later, for those bills, but there’s nothing I own that I wouldn’t happily trade for those extra months of her life. If some judge had ordered her death to be any earlier, I would have burnt the whole god damned world down. Fuck these people.

I have maybe ~1.5 TB of assorted audio files. Everything from CD’s ripped to disk (as FLAC, MP3, or raw wavs), to legacy audio recordings (which may be Wavs of 16/44, 16/48, or 24/96), to thousands of .aac and mp4 and .opus files which are basically rips from Youtube or encoded streams.
my experiment would be to try and batch-convert most of them at once to a single, consistent audio format.
(all uncompressed files would be converted to a single uncompressed format; all compressed formats would be converted to .opus)
pretty sure it would require a machine running all night/all day
i actually think the problem would be the storage requirements; every time you run a conversion, it creates duplicates in a buffer … basically uses 3X the file size during the process. I guess if it runs conversions serially, its not an issue, but if its running dozens at a time… im not sure what the problem would be, but suspect something somewhere would choke.
basically, i haven’t tried it yet. just mentally trying to organize what the ideal process would be to make it work.

i’ve used a dozen of these sorts of things. they all have their hang-ups, quirks. this one just works w/ everything i throw at it. particularly audio which is encoded in video-wrapper formats
(which is one of the fuckups about ripping best-quality audio from YT; audio programs sometimes get confused by it because it thinks its a .mkv file)
That particular model is powerful enough to transcode video on the fly with Plex, so it’d be up to it. I’ve got a bit over 10.5TB usable with those 4 4TB drives, which would also be plenty. It’s Linux under the covers – you can SSH to it – so you could put together that sort of custom conversion pipeline.
That said, you could likely put together something yourself that’d be cheaper, just not in that small form factor.
I’m extremely curious about this, so thanks for sharing your thoughts. I use Plex all the time, on Roku enabled televisions, laptops/tablets, and phones and have serious heat problems using my primary PC and external HD (several times per year Best Buy puts the WD Easystore 8TB external drive on sale for $149; it contains a WD Red HD so I grab them when I can). I’ve been eyeing the Synology stuff on Newegg for a spell now but kinda want to build my own.
Synology systems are mostly a linux box with a GUI. you ssh in and can then see all of the details behind the user interface.
The cloud sync tool will do remote synchronization with encryption to S3 and other cloud services, but I think it is a file by file basis. That allows metadata to leak out of your secure systems (when you updated files, what you call them etc.)

as mentioned above, i’ve got like a half dozen of these 250gb jobbies floating around and need to consolidate them; some of them run hot and noisy and are probably close to total failure. 1 had maybe ~1% of its data corrupted, all of which was recent writes… indicating that it is going to shit the bed very soon.

I learned the hard way that Uninterruptable Power Supplies are cheap compared to replacing the damaged hardware in the computer. It’s now standard practice for me to use them instead of a mere surge protector.
Every TV, DVR, and computer in the house is plugged into a UPS. My wife plugs her automated embroidery machine into one.
If you don’t need the battery backed power, these seem to work well (and are cheaper than a UPS):

Of course surge protectors, power conditioners, and UPS’s are somewhat useless without grounded outlets.
The battery gives the computer enough time to cleanly shut down or to ride out brief outages. (at my apartment a five to ten minute blackout wasn’t that uncommon, it happens less at my house) which is why I picked a UPs over a power conditioner. Though if you don’t have a system state that needs to be quiesced, that will work.
Yeah, a UPS is no doubt better, but also more expensive and requires more maintenance over time. You could pick a copy-on-write filesystem (like ZFS) to better ensure that data is written to disk, to mitigate some of the risk of not having a UPS.
But I’m not arguing against a UPS, use it if you can.

It catches fire. It starts getting hot which makes the fire larger. After a while it gets hot enough to boil and when it does the bubbles of fumes can be huge. So then you have a large volume of flammable fumes rising into open flame. If it is inside a sealed or even partially sealed chamber you have a real problem.

Got up this morning when my wife woke up to get ready for work, 4:30 am. Almost immediately realized something isn’t right with me. My back was hurting, lower back, like a son of a bitch. I’m just walking around like a zombie, my typical early morn behavior, so I think she didn’t pay too much attention. But I’m thinking WTF is wrong with me? So she leaves and I put on some coffee. Then I want to the bathroom and just happened to glance in the mirror when walking out, then I suddenly went back. My left eye was sort of all matted and red as fucking fire. Holy shit! So then I just suddenly realized that we had two people missing from the office of one of my clients last week because of pink eye. FUCK! That’s when I realized I can’t go to the office today looking like this. Emailed my client and explained and worked from home. My back is fucking hurting like shit still, but I’m taking Alleeve, which is helping a little and just grabbed a beer and that seems to be helping a little. I still have some eye drops from having this shit last spring. I hope they’re still effective. I think so because it’s already a little better and not as red. I hate that stuff though, it’s like you’re putting milk in your eyes and burns like hell. I really don’t know about going to the office tomorrow morning either, I need to but I’m doubtful.
