Tax Relief, Hollywood Edition

Thanks to an unusually eclectic set of parents, I was raised on classic cinema- my father always said that he knew he had acculturated me correctly because I was the only kid my age who knew who Spring Byington was. Of all the great movies we watched, I always favored Frank Capra’s. The themes were all different, but had a certain commonality of the Little Guy rising despite the entrenched forces of corruption. His vision of America is one that I came to adopt, a place where opportunity was there for those willing to grab it, a vision informed by his own experiences as a penniless immigrant who rose to the top of Hollywood through sheer effort and skill.

Fortunately, SP shares my taste for old movies, and when we were poking around Amazon a few nights ago, she came across the wonderful You Can’t Take It With You, which she hadn’t seen in… let’s say a long time. It featured a very typical Capra cast: a young Jimmy Stewart, the always hot Jean Arthur, crusty and foreboding Edward Arnold, flighty and dance-y Ann Miller (15 years old, playing a 20-something), avuncular Lionel Barrymore, and of course, a dotty Spring Byington. Fun extra feature: a very young Dub Taylor playing the xylophone. Another bonus: if you want to see where Michael Richards got the Kramer character from, look at Mischa Auer’s Kolenkhov.

In any case, one memorable scene had us high-fiveing in delight, something that reflected our own beliefs (and those of many of you) perfectly. And it even had Charles Lane, a Jew from Milwaukee who made a great career of always playing the same WASP-y character. So, with no further ado, the perfect Frank Capra analysis of taxes, as explicated by Barrymore and Lane. Have a fun April 15 (yes, yes, I know, the 17th this year)!

Ah, classic cinema, when high school kids played twenty something year olds, instead of twenty something year olds playing high school kids. How the medium has fallen.

    1. It’s those darn child labor laws.

    2. Go back to the 1929 movie So This is College, about a bunch of college senior football players. Robert Montgomery at 25 is the youngest; the others are in their 30s.

And be prepared for “unknown sources” to leak a ton of exaggerated or false shit the dnc operatives with bylines will report as news hoping to affect the elections in November.

Seriously, we are seeing the criminal left basically try to undo the result of an election they thought they had already rigged and stolen in order for one dnc crime syndicate boss (Obama) to hand over a weaponized government to another dnc crime syndicate boss (Clinton) and are pissed Trump is dismantling that machine they hoped would finally destroy any resistance or opposition to the left’s agenda to permanently and fundamentally change America into one of those European shitholes they so admire and pine for, as Obama promised to do.

        1. mexican sharpshooter

          Trump is dismantling that machine

I’m not sure he’s doing that. He certainly pissed it off and has it trying to cover its tracks while eat its own tail.

          1. AlexinCT

I was pointing out the proggie douchebags going batshit think he is doing so right now. We can debate if that is really happening or not amongst ourselves, but at a minimum Trump’s biggest accomplishment – IMO – is that he has made these scumbags out themselves as anything but sane, logical, or looking out for anyone other than themselves.

Our deep state is dangerous. Especially since it believes that there is a set of rules for us that doesn’t apply to them…

    2. R C Dean

I’m looking at the coincidence of Trump’s attorney being raided and a newspaper being investigated for not publishing anti-Trump “news”. And what I am seeing is government agents completely out of control, attacking two of the fundamental pillars of civil society in pursuit of their political agenda. Seriously, the balls on these guys, to crap all over attorney-client privilege and freedom of the press on consecutive days. This is a slow-motion coup by an out of control administrative state that is lashing out because someone is trying to bring it to heel.

The lack of outrage by nearly everyone, and even the vociferous support for this by not just the usual Dems and proggies, but also by establishment Republicans, is perhaps the most worrying. Our enemies have taken the field, and our putative allies have . . . joined them. My only solace is schadenfreude at the coming immolation of Republican candidates who will discover that stabbing your supporters in the back is a good first step toward them not voting for you any more. Fuck the Repubs in Congress. Good riddance, and I hope this November wrecks your party. Time for creative destruction in our politics, I say, and the first step is clearing out the deadwood. With a flamethrower.

I’m still mystified as to what crime was committed by paying off Stormy Daniels.

        1. R C Dean

You’re in good company. Mueller can’t figure that one out either. The difference is, he doesn’t care.

          1. AlexinCT

Your mistake is to think these people are out for any kind of real justice or to actually find a crime. They are not. this is about overturning the results of an election they thought they had already rigged and stolen for their insider candidate and crime syndicate boss. It’s about sending the message that no outsider will ever be allowed to control their machine. And most importantly about telling everyone that the left will not tolerate anyone else in power but them and their ideas.

        2. Just Say’n

From my understanding, if the money paid to Daniels was was with campaign funds and was not disclosed this could be a problem. The same thing happened to John Edwards when he paid off his mistress with campaign money. Note that no one stormed Edwards’ house with guns out

          1. mexican sharpshooter

          4. Raven Nation

And a lot of Trump’s campaign was subsidized by media outrage.

          5. AlexinCT

This money was paid by Cohen – who borrowed from a bank using his home as equity according to the people that claim this is why he was raided – so I am not sure how these cunts plan to connect that to Trump other than causing chaos and then hoping they can net him on a technicality and derail his presidency.

          6. R C Dean

I’m thinking the Cohen raid was mostly about getting material to set a perjury trap for Trump.

If he sits for an interview, I’m hoping he answers every question that is not about whether his campaign coordinated with the Russians with “That is outside the scope of your appointment. Next question.” and every question about whether is campaign coordinated with the Russian government with “I am a very busy man, and that was a very hectic time. I’m afraid I don’t recall.”

Over and over, the exact same answers, robotically.

Maybe have aides come in and out of the interview, whispering to him and giving him papers to sign.

          7. mexican sharpshooter

Maybe have aides come in and out of the interview, whispering to him and giving him papers to sign.

Wasn’t Manafort charged with falsifying (home) loan documents? Does this become a Federal crime if those are sold to Fannie/Freddie?

          9. R C Dean

Interesting. This is supposedly all about Cohen and nothing to do with the Trump.

In a just world, that would mean that anything they found that had to do with Trump would be strictly off-limits to Mueller’s team, or anyone else. That’s privileged, still, since it wasn’t the subject of the investigation.

I got $20 bucks that says Trump-related stuff that they picked up starts getting leaked to press in less than two weeks. Which, again in a just world, would trigger an investigation into the prosecutors and who they have been sharing material that is still privileged with, leading ultimately to disbarments and perhaps a conviction or two.

          Blame Canada for Optics?
          https://www.macmillandictionary.com/us/buzzword/entries/optics.html
          “Background – optics
Metaphorical expansion of optics into political and other arenas in fact dates back to the late 1970s, when it was used in the context of US President Jimmy Carter’s anti-inflation policy. Interestingly, at the time, the metaphor also extended to the related adjective optical, with for example a particular course of action being described as a ‘nice optical step’. Though metaphorical use of the adjective never really took off, the noun gained a foothold in political commentary throughout the 1980s, especially in Canadian English. Today it is still far more prevalent in Canadian and US English, though the current Libya conflict has led to more exposure in Britain. Optics has also gained currency in Irish English, often in the context of the country’s recent economic difficulties.

In this metaphorical sense, optics mainly manifests itself in two ways – either as a modified noun phrase, i.e. good/bad optics etc, or more commonly in the construction the optics of + noun/gerund, so e.g. the optics of the agreement/moves/deal, the optics of changing interest rates, etc.”
