This weekend started out being pure shit. First off all, there was my package in the mail. First they lost it, then it turned out it was still at the sort facility. So finally, it was out for delivery again. So around 7 PM Thursday night, I get a text message from USPS saying that my out for delivery package was being held at the post office. No reason given. I wanted to call someone up and deliver a hate and curse filled rant, but you cannot call the post office after hours. So, moving on to Friday. I went to the post office to get it at and they didn’t have it. Apparently they delivered it. WTF is wrong with these dumb people?

Then it got worse, got a call from wife at work telling me she fell, doesn’t feel too good, can I come and get her. So off I went. Before I got there she called again and tells me they’re taking her to the hospital. So I said, I’m almost here, just wait. So I arrive and a couple of her co-workers helped her to my car. At this point, she cannot walk. So I took her to the emergency room. After a couple of hours there, finally got to talk to the doctor, nothing on the X rays and nothing on the MRI (whew, relief!), just a sprained ankle and bruised swollen knee. Seriously folks, when you fall at our age, it’s fucking scary. Dodged a huge bullet there.

So now, I’m drankin bourbon and rye and playing with me new toy, my 1080 ti. Sweet! Oh, and I cannot remember who recommended the Sagamore Barrel Select rye to me, but thank you! It is freaking good!

    Pics to follow.

Yeah, my cable management skills are shit. I don’t care, this thing is a beast.

And my whistlepig 10 yo mini sample that I got with it! Awww, it’s so cute!

    1. I am glad things eventually worked out. Glad I could recommend a decent beverage for ya too.

      1. Hyperion

Thanks, Swiss. I really like the Sagamore a lot. Actually pleasantly surprised by how good it is.

Wife is better now, just really sore and can’t walk too well on the sprained ankle. I’m sort of a slave right now since she’s sitting on the sofa ordering me around, but I’ll take it any day over ‘could have been much worse’.

        1. Amen. Could always be worse.

        2. You’re a husband. You’re always a slave.

I bet if you filter out criminal on criminal murder, London is even higher. Not sure if the same would apply if filtering out high crime/avoid neighborhoods.

      1. And yet the london police is dedicating more staff to online policing than to street crime.

One of these is within their actual function, the other is not.

        1. Gustave Lytton

One is much safer for the investigating officers than the other. And more comfortable. Can be done with a cup of tea and a biscuit.

        2. Suthenboy

I get the notion that there is a fundamental difference in the way they see policing from the way we do.

What has happened to Britain is tragic. I hope they wake the fuck up and make their country free again.

I think there’s a serious risk that the government’s policy of suppressing and punishing discontent will cause more people to join up with ultra-nationalist Nazi-tards like the BNP.

      1. Number.6

The public learned their lesson with the BNP and the National Front. The more likely scenario is to take action outside of the political sphere, since it’s now clear that this isn’t *just* a case of the Labour Party wanting to import 200 years’ of voting loyalty.

And by “action outside the political sphere” I mean widespread, politically-unaligned violence.

      2. Hyperion

Their PM is Theresa May. They are totally fucked. The only way they could be more fucked is if Angela Merkel or Hillary was their PM. And probably not much more fucked in that it would make a real difference.

  17. The Late P Brooks

    Grrrrl power

I want Congress to understand that there is still no such thing as separate but equal. And I desperately want female Marines to understand just how capable and competitive they can be. What might the possibilities be for the military if women were allowed to compete and lead?

If blatant sexism continues, we may never find out. Why would parents encourage a smart, talented daughter to join the Marine Corps if the first thing she would encounter is the message that she’s simply not good enough?

This must change, not only because our military services are struggling to fill slots since so few Americans are willing or fit enough to serve, but also because future generations will not stand for it. The definition of female strength continues to change, redefined by CrossFit gyms and extraordinary female endurance athletes. Yet the Marine Corps continues to insist that women can’t train with men.

It’s silly. It’s insulting. It’s time to lead.

Some can, some can’t. I suspect the reluctance to “believe in those female recruits” might have to do with experience.

    But what do I know?

    1. Akira

Fine – as long as there are identical physical standards and absolutely no complaints about “disparate impact” if a higher percentage of women wash out during training.

      1. Hyperion

Nothing says equality like putting your head in bullet range, I’ll give them that. Hope they enjoy, but I doubt it. High levels of testosterone is what is required for that sort of thing and they can’t inject enough.

    2. Brochettaward

      Counterpoint.

The corps said that Colonel Germano’s removal had nothing to do with gender, and that an investigation had found that she disobeyed her chain of command and berated and embarrassed subordinates when they did not meet her standards.

“This whole thing started when her Marines — her female Marines — were telling us they were being mistreated,” said Col. Jeffrey Fultz, the chief of staff for Parris Island. “She was telling them their male counterparts will never respect them if they don’t get good physical scores. You just don’t do that.”

She may be right. She may have produced results. But she probably had a shit ton of malcontents in the process.

    3. Derpetologist

During WW2 and all the way up to about 1990, the US military was segregated by gender. This had 2 main benefits:

      1) greatly reduced problems of rape, sexual assault, and pregnancy

      2) reduced training injuries among women

West Point went coed in 1980 and army basic training went coed in 1994.

      From a 1994 article
      https://www.deseretnews.com/article/380118/ARMY-UNITS-GO-COED-FOR-BASIC-TRAINING.html

      ***
Not everyone likes the idea, but Staff Sgt. Edward L. Johnson, Fort Jackson’s drill sergeant of the year, has a ready answer: “`When you were a little boy, there was one person who you always looked up to. You tell me your mother was weak? She was strong!’ It works every time with the males.”

Nevertheless, some remain unconvinced, including Charles C. Ross of Columbus, N.C., a retired Army colonel.

“Coed training will only produce diminished standards and results for the simple reason that women do not possess the strength and endurance of men,” Ross said.

But Johnson maintains there’s nothing like a little competition to bring out the best in his recruits: All he’s got to tell the men is, “I’ve got a female who can outrun you.”

Sgt. Barbara Davies, who participated in an experimental coed training course last year, found the competition spurred the women on as well: They wanted to prove they were as good as the men.
      ***

From time to time, a female soldier will outperform a male. In general however, it’s the reverse.

      1. Rhywun

They wanted to prove they were as good as the men.

Because it’s sexist for men to be better at things that men are good at. MUST BE EQUAL!

    1. Libertesian

      @STEVE_SMITH TOO TIRED FROM RAP(P)ING

  22. Derpetologist

    today I learned

    ***
Etymology. The term rape originates from the Latin rapere (supine stem raptum), “to snatch, to grab, to carry off”. Since the 14th century, the term has come to mean “to seize and take away by force”. In Roman law, the carrying off of a woman by force, with or without intercourse, constituted “raptus”.
    ***

    Raptor means thief in Latin.

    1. westernsloper

It does at Ford too. Those things are way over priced.

      1. Gustave Lytton

Almost all trucks are overpriced these days, yet they keep selling. I wish my wages inflated as fast as prices have.

        1. westernsloper

I am with you, it has gotten ridiculous. When it is nothing to spend 60 grand on a 3/4 ton truck things have gotten out of hand.

          1. Gustave Lytton

Try 60K on a 1/2 ton. It’s almost there now.

Plus the styling and interiors suck so I keep driving my 16 year old truck.

          2. westernsloper

New truck prices are the range I shop in for fixer upper homes.

      2. Don Escaped Texas

I’ve left the business, but I truly believe there is a huge hole in the auto industry where basic transportation and equipment belong.

We have 17 types of trucks and deodorants, all jazzed up to triple the price, and subsidized credit makes it easy for people to get in lots of trouble (but I’m sparing everyone my credit-is-evil lecture this one time; rest easy).

But no one sells a big I-4, 3speed, half-ton rail-frame truck. Leave out all the custom, computerized junk, go with crank windows, bulb head lamps, and OTC fuel injection, and one could tool one up for well under $10k that gets maybe 17MPG at 50MPG. Five star crashworthiness would be impossible to achieve without tons of FEA, but you’d learn most of the answers during federal crash testing; indeed, you might just design in gawdy NASCAR-styled roll-cages and 5-point hitches and get pretty close for only a few hundred bucks a throw.

        1. Old Man With Candy

Serious question- are crank windows and computerized ignition and fuel actually more expensive to make these days? The price of everything electronic has decreased dramatically in recent decades, while the power and performance has increased just as quickly.

          1. Don Escaped Texas

Yours is a good question, and I’m not really close to the costs of the window deal, but I meant it more as a generalization: there are certainly a ton of systems that are overly custom and specialized to no end further than brand and styling. Most of my work was in heat exchange and controls, and those design choices regularly struck me as pointless expensive: an old Bowden cable HVAC control can be less than $25, for example, while a integrated circuits version is $65 before amortizing design/programming (~$1,000,000) and tuning (at least another $250,000). A hot-water valve is $12, while a blend-air kinematics are $25 (again, before amortizing another $250k in test and tuning). There are tons of cases where you’re right, and I didn’t shy away from EFI, for example (couldn’t approach emissions requirements without it, anyway).

Along this line, I’ll give you a way of thinking about the window. The crank handle is probably in the ballpark of the up/down switch. The kinematics are in the range of the actuator. The rest of the door and window stuff are the same. But the body controller that all of this talks to is probably $100 to say nothing of development/programming. On F150, CRV, or Camry, those development costs can get diluted pretty well; figure maybe $3-4M divided by 500,000 to 1,000,000 units, more if you can apply the technology and tooling across several badges or platforms. None of this would work on my cute little zero-staff backyard start-up.

But let’s take an example that more than makes the case: A top end standard socket lamp bulb would be less than $10; three of them and framing and lenses, $50 tops. A contemporary headlight assembly with integrated controls, power, and baked deposition reflector is probably over $100 in parts before considering extra tooling and design costs ($2M?).

    2. Libertesian

I’m guessing that the #METOO crowd does not approve of the “thief” definition, even though that is by far the more common usage of the word in non-STEVE_SMITH circles.

London murder rate beats New York for month as stabbings surge
    http://www.foxnews.com/world/2018/04/01/london-murder-rate-beats-new-york-for-month-as-stabbings-surge.html

    ***
London became a bit more like New York City in February, but it’s not a distinction to be proud of.

The city of Big Ben and the tube overtook New York in murders for the first time in modern history as the British capital dealt with a surge in knife attacks.

The Sunday Times reported 15 people were murdered in London, against 14 in New York. Both cities are very diverse with large populations: London has over 8.7 million residents to New York’s 8.5 million.

In March, according to the British publication, there had been 22 killings in London versus 21 in New York.

A massive decline in crime has helped to transform New York City: In 1990, of 2,245 people were murdered. Last year, however, that number dropped nearly 90 percent to 290 murders.

The total number of murders in London has fluctuated over the years, but it’s risen by 38 percent since 2014.

For those of you who have the time for a three hour long nutpunch, this latest podcast from Thad Russell has quite the story to it. tl;dr version – this 19 year old kid is wrongfully convicted of a murder he didn’t commit, and eventually becomes heavily involved in the California Prison Reform movement while serving a life sentence at San Quentin. He was released a couple of years ago after serving 41 years, and there is an hour long documentary about him here. This guy saw firsthand, and has researched to the nth degree, the evil of prison guard unions; seems to me he deserves some kind of honourary libertarian award.

I’m still trying to get one of my friends to come here, but I’m afraid he misapprehended the nature of this site’s content after I tried to show him the cool articles and the first post just so happened to be an installment of Manly Monday. He has now developed a serious belief that the title is a contraction of “gay libertarians”.

    2. Galt1138

I really like Russell’s podcast. Sometimes he can get in the way of his guests, especially when he goes on about postmodernism which, with respect to objective reality vs subjective/abstract ideas, Russell’s simply wrong.

Still, Russell’s generally on the correct side of things, particularly on things like state abuse of power. Will definitely add this one to the list.

      1. Gordilocks

It’s one of my favourites as well. Despite his weakness around PoMo, he’s a good interviewer, and as you mentioned, on most of the issues surrounding the state, he’s on our side.

I appreciate the wide range of guests he’s had on in the year the show has been around. From alt-lite trolls like Gavin McInnes and Jim Goad, to a Syrian Refugee, a gay porn star, Iraq War Vets, Iraq War critics, various other podcasters, Michael Malice, a few authors I’ve never heard of, and everyone’s favourite, Maggie McNeil, his show has certainly run the gamut and is not otherwise easily pigeonholed.

Ooh, Sharktopus vs. Whalewolf. I gotta see that one.

Same deal with Grizzly. It even has a ripoff of Quint’s USS Indianapolis story, but with bears and Indians instead of sailors and sharks.

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grizzly_(film)

spoiler: the ending involves a bear and a bazooka

It made $39 mil on a budget of $750k.

the ending involves a bear and a bazooka

          *excellent*

there was another book by the same author of Jaws… Peter Benchley….. he wrote a couple of action-thriller type novels around the same oceanic themes

Oh, right – The Deep (1977): (nick nolte, jaquline bissete)

does it also involve a speargun with dynamite on the tip? i feel like it does.

          1. Derpetologist

Devour by Kurt Anderson is pretty much the same thing. The monster is a Mosasaurus and it is partly written from the monster’s perspective.

I read most of it while waiting at a bookstore while my friends went shopping.

            ah, so… Jewish?

          3. Derpetologist

The name means lizard of the Meuse [river].

I don’t know if there were any Jewish dinosaurs, but I do know from the Onion about the world’s oldest sexual predator.

Also with Robert Shaw. I don’t recall a spear with a dynamite tip. But, Lou Gossett, Jr. does have a great death scene involving a great moray eel.

Plus, Jackie Bisset in that wet t-shirt. Mmmm.

The main scenes for Grizzly II: The Predator were completed, but before special effects featuring a huge electromechanical bear could be used, the executive producer, Joseph Proctor, disappeared with all of the funds, with some sources saying he was jailed during the time of the filming. Filmed footage of a live bear, however, attacking a live rock concert, was shot in Hungary.

    Arrest over ‘offensive napkin comments’

    30 March 2018

Police have said a 22-year-old man has been arrested as part of a hate crime investigation in Dumfries.

The inquiry began after racially-offensive comments were found scrawled on a napkin in a local Chinese restaurant.

The discovery was made by a member of staff at the Hong Kong Star in the Friars Vennel.

A report is being prepared for the procurator fiscal.

Man guilty of hate crime for filming pug’s ‘Nazi salutes’

Mark Meechan, 30, recorded his girlfriend’s pug, Buddha, responding to statements such as “gas the Jews” and “Sieg Heil” by raising its paw.

But police were alerted and he was arrested for allegedly committing a hate crime.

The original clip had been viewed more than three million times on YouTube.

        Grossly offensive
Meechan, of Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, went on trial at Airdrie Sheriff Court where he denied any wrong doing.

He insisted he made the video, which was posted in April 2016, to annoy his girlfriend Suzanne Kelly, 29.

But Sheriff Derek O’Carroll found him guilty of a charge under the Communications Act that he posted a video on social media and YouTube which was grossly offensive because it was “anti-semitic and racist in nature” and was aggravated by religious prejudice.

Sheriff O’Carroll told the court he did not believe Meechan had made the video only to annoy his girlfriend and ruled it was anti-Semitic.

He also said he believed Meechan – who was supported at court by Tommy Robinson, former leader of far-right group the English Defence League (EDL) – left the video on YouTube to drive traffic to other material he had on there.

He added: “In my view it is a reasonable conclusion that the video is grossly offensive

“The description of the video as humorous is no magic wand.

“This court has taken the freedom of expression into consideration.

“But the right to freedom of expression also comes with responsibility.”

OT: What kind of savory baked goods should I make to take to work next week?

I always like to bake some kind of snack to keep at my desk to eat throughout the day. This is usually a whole baguette, but sometimes I make croissants, focaccia, English muffins, cornbread, soft pretzels, or bagels.

I’m just looking for a little variety. Any ideas for a savory snack (because I don’t want to much sugar) that is good at room temperature?

Way late to see this, but how about savory scones? I have a couple great recipes like Parmesan-black pepper, or rosemary.
