I got my hair did today. So I got that going for me. Had a decent dinner in a weird restaurant last night. Maybe it was the blue lighting in the bar. Maybe it was that we were the youngest couple on our side of the restaurant by at least 10 years. Maybe it was the fact that our server looked like he got dragged off a bar stool at the shuffleboard court. Anyhow, lovely dinner with my wife until the fucker brought me the wrong wine — on purpose. I still tipped him, but I was hot. Bring me. What the fuck. I ordered. Don’t save me $2 on a glass of wine. So he got the minimum I give for holiday nights.
I don’t know the answer to the mystery, Do you think he was exploring his hobosexuality?
From the “Trump is not our ally” files. A sales tax? Sure, just repeal the 16th Amendment first.
Well, there’s at least one clear hero in the school shooting yesterday. Rest well, Coach Fies, you done good.
Nothing to see here, just move along, sure, its a hole in the theory, but we will get it explained if you just increase our research funding! (Just how much of the Earth does weather have to affect before it becomes climate?)
I’m digging this riff today. Even if the vocal loop is a little weird.
You’re in Florida – you probably have a 70% of being the youngest person in whatever joint you happen to wander into.
What about the Panhandle?
Maybe more like 55%, depending on where you are. Plenty of retired Navy geezers around Escambia and Santa Rosa counties.
Good point, I keep forgetting about the bases around there.
We winter on 30A – makes us feel young (were >60)
Its worse in the winter. I always forget until it happens.
Why your internet/voice bundle costs less than internet-only service (I was late to the links this morning, so I’ll post this here):
In the morning links I noticed a couple Glibs were wondering why their telecom company will charge less for an internet/voice bundle than an internet-only service. I work in the industry, so I can answer this question for you.
The answer is government subsidies. Telecom companies that service higher-cost areas are provided with Connect America Fund (formerly known as Universal Service Support) dollars for every person they hook up to a voice line – so they get support dollars if you have a voice line, but lose it if you opt for internet-only service. The companies respond to these incentives by charging customers more if they don’t get a voice line bundled with their other services.
Recent reforms open up CAF dollars for broadband-only subscribers (called CAF-Broadband Loop Support), however the amount of the fund that has been opened up is severely underfunded compared to the dollars available for voice services, including dollars received through inter-carrier compensation pools that only reimburse for voice services.
Keep in mind that high cost areas are not always well defined, so even if you think you aren’t in a high-cost area, you actually might be by the FCC’s standards.
Thanks, TK. Is there a map or a list of zip codes for this?
All I saw was this: https://www.fcc.gov/maps/
Didn’t quite look like what you wanted (from here: https://www.fcc.gov/general/universal-service-high-cost-areas-connect-america-fund)
That’s just fed funding. The states have their own USF slush funds.
I don’t know of a list of zip codes out there (there are 30,000 eligible census blocks for CAF II program funding alone – and this is only for super crazy high-cost areas).
Your best bet for finding data on this stuff is though NECA – which administers the interstate access revenue sharing pools & payments between telecom companies. Take a look
You’ll notice that the subsidies are now split between 2 different types of support – USF (CAF) and A-CAM. This was the result of recent reforms. A-CAM is a model that projects cost of service over a 10 year period and offers flat subsidies over that time period. USF (CAF) is a cost-based model that requires telecom companies to do annual cost studies.
I could honestly write an entire article on this for Glibs (I have considered doing so).
Please do, TK.
Please do.
Agreed. It sounds interesting, and may illuminate yet another distortion of the market by government.
I’ll have to put something together. I appreciate you guys letting me know you’d be interested.
Thanks, guys.
We have voice bundled in with our cable and internet, and yes, it is much less expensive than cable/internet alone. We’ve had this package for several years now and I’ve yet to plug in a phone to the outlet. A completely paid for and unused telephone line is thus in our house. Thanks for explaining why, this is very interesting.
I had the same deal. I had the reduced rate which was supposed to only be a 2 year promotional thing for 5 years. When I dropped AT&T and switched to the Comcast phone service I was already paying for, they came back the year after and told me the promotional rate was done for and jacked the cost up 15%. If I didn’t need reliable internet to work from home, i would have dropped everything.
I’m in the area where the guy takes 4 hours to install the cable and makes you late for work. Hopefully the internet is on when I get home.
Now starring in Log Jammers
He installed the Cable?
Don’t be fatuous, Robertarian.
The plot is ludicrous
How do you expect to keep them on the farm after they’ve seen Karl Hungus?
I cannot wait to share this film with my son. He’s a bit young for the subject matter though.
You can always watch the censored version and try to explain “This is what happens when you meet a man in the Alps,” actually means.
God I hope so. I’m at work now. I had to leave the guy in my house. Hopefully he didn’t steal anything. If he did my wife is going to freak.
I had a situation once where my cable was down so I called for a service tech to come over. Standard we’ll be there between 8 and 7. Guy never shows. Do it again. No show again. After hours of tracking down a customer service rep who was smarter than a brick, it was determined that they had an automated system that would call my cable box all day, and this system determined that my cable was working fine so my appointments kept getting automatically cancelled with no notice to me.
I was able to get the non brick rep to turn off this system so a tech would come visually observe that my cable was out.
I would’ve canceled on the spot and gone to another source.
I worked tech support for a number of years, it’s generally the IT equivalent of working the Window at Taco Bell. The people who are good at their jobs can usually get better jobs pretty quick. Depending on your ISP you might be able to ask for an American or Tier 2 tech support right off the bat.
Maybe the Undercover Boss was doing the install.
Look around for a camera crew.
Thanks!
I got an email about CPNI. It seems I should opt-out of this.
Thanks. I used to argue with the cable company about this and could never get an answer, so now I just accept the phone thing because it’s cheaper with it, but I tell the installation guy not to give me one.
Chances are the installation guy has absolutely no idea – he’s just got a rate sheet and told to sell/install.
The modem they provide you (or you buy on your own based on their specs if you want to avoid a ridiculous charge) has a jack for the phone. There is no opt in or out with that…
*checks modem*
Nope, it just has the cable jack, power plug and the RJ-45 Ethernet port. It could handle a VoIP phone, but any network connection has the potential for that.
I meant that the installation guy has no idea about the CAF/USF subsidies that distort the price structure.
The presence of a jack doesn’t really mean anything – I have plenty of phone jacks but don’t pay for phone service (but I’m not in a high cost area so getting voice service won’t lower my bill anyway).
Buy your own modem.
For the love of God, you make it back in the first year.
It was eight months for me to break even on the Modem.
Yeah. It was the rep on the phone I would argue with, not the poor tech guy.
He probably doesn’t know either, haha. Most telecom employees don’t have any idea – its the guys at the executive level that are keenly aware of all this stuff.
I took a look and Comcast doesn’t offer Internet/Phone bundles in my area. Bastards. They offer tons of triple play packages with cable thrown in but those are good deal more expensive.
I have a landline free through VOIP and Google Voice. Though now, I’m strongly reconsidering Google Voice.
The other part of it is that bundled customers are less likely to churn than standalone customers. There’s a huge cost to acquiring a new customer versus reducing churn and keeping the ones you’ve got.
Personally I think the bundle vs standalone is a indicator not the cause. Standalone customers could be more likely to just want what they want and be more likely to jump for faster speed/better service/better price and such. Converting what would be standalone customers into bundled customers doesn’t actually change the person but what the hell do I know? I’m in the weeds.

Continuation of my Latin questions from yesterday…
I get the impression that “Liber Metallica” is the incorret tense for referring to the entier series of books. What would be the proper tense?
Tense is used with verbs.
Whatever the proper term for declining nouns in latin is.
“I decline to use nouns in a sentence.”
Is that about right?
No, the case.
Are we talking Libri Metallici? Libris Metallicis? What?

This is what use tax is for. I own an online retail business (shameless plug), and I really, really do not want to have to remit sales tax to each and every single state that I sell into. Doing monthly filings with my own state is enough paperwork for me to deal with, please don’t make me do this in 50 different states every single fucking month.
Comrade! Send all gross receipts to us and we will distribute to states for you. Then sometime later in year we send you what’s left!
You didn’t build that. All of your profits belong to us.

Yeah, the equivocation in that entire article just set my teeth on edge. Fuckers.
To be fair, I prefer it when scientist are timid about their results, rather than trying to beat everyone into submission.
OK. So, the secondary discussion to the gun-grabbers ejaculating all over dead kids is the “how can we prevent this?” and “MENTUL HELTH!!” rigmarole.
I happen to believe that there is nothing to “tackle” here, violence is part of living in a free society and these incidents are outliers. However, putting a pin in that and assuming we have to “do something” the mental health angle creeps me out almost as much as the gun control angle. These “warning signs” are always 20/20 hindsight and for every 1 person that shows these signs and acts on it, there are probably 100,000 who show said signs and don’t. So what do we do with the staggering number of false positives? Involuntarily commit them for some period? Take away their gun rights? Put them on a forced medication regimen? Put them under continuous surveillance? The vast majority of these people are in a transient state; but punishing and stigmatizing them for nothing but a suspicion would seem to me to exacerbate the situation. People have a way of living up to your expectations and if you treat someone as a deranged killer, then put them through the meat grinder of the System, they’re much more likely to actually become a deranged killer; or at least a permanent ward of the state/basketcase.
This guy made an explicit threat on YouTube under his own name…he wasn’t a borderline or ambiguous case. He should have been investigated much more closely than he was.
Yeah, just like the woodchipper crew!!
Naptown Bill mentioned that this morning.
Once you get on one of those government lists, it will be impossible to get off. There will be no due process.
Much is being made on Derpbook about how the POS had been forbidden from bringing backpacks to school before they expelled him, with the follow-on question of if he couldn’t be trusted with a backpack why was he allowed to have a gun. IOW, they want schoolteachers to be able to put you on a federal government watchlist.
I got into a huge fight once at work about this.
I get pretty heated and let loose with “people with mental illness are far more likely to be victims of crime than ordinary people. Why should they be deprived of their right to self defense?!? They should take one for the team so you have the illusion of feeling safer?!? What other civil rights should we deny to the mentally ill solely for the purpose of making ourselves feel better?”
Found out much, much later that the person I was arguing with had once been in inpatient treatment for bipolar disorder. Which explains why she was utterly poleaxed and then said “I never thought of it like that.”
When I was a teenager I was admitted for inpatient treatment after a suicide attempt. It’s probably a good thing I didn’t have a gun back then. But should I be restricted from owning them now, two decades later, because I’ve been in outpatient therapy ever since?
No, you should not be so restricted unless you have made credible threats against others.
pretty much this. I don’t want you to hurt yourself JB, but if you were to decide to, that’s none of the governemnt’s business.
I think that’s the whole thing right there. Once you’ve done that, I think you ought to be detained for a bit and probably should be prevented from purchasing a gun for some time.
To ask the question is to know the State’s answer, citizen.
320 million people in the US.
north of 15% of the population (48 million) experience some level of mental illness each year.
perhaps a couple dozen people do something horrendous each year.
unsolvable problem.
Guns are point and click death. It sure would be easier to solve this problem if all guns were criminalised Australia style. Both inevitable responses.
My sarcasm meter has been broken for months.
Will someone parse this one for me?
I think he’s saying that both those sentences are inevitable responses to events.
Thank you for translating it from the original troglodyte.
There are somewhere north of 300 million guns in domestic circulation, by the most conservative estimates. At least five million of them are the assault rifles that politicians piss themselves over.
That horse is out of the barn.
I don’t care if you think prohibition would be effective. I don’t care if you can mathematically prove that it’s a good idea. IT’S TOO FUCKING LATE.
More recent estimates put the number at closer to 600 million.
You’re crazy if you think creating lists of the mentally ill will have any unintended consequences or be abused/used to strip people of rights. CRAZY! If it saves just one child…
What society needs is more stigma attached to mental illness and more reasons for people to avoid getting help.
If putting children in camps where only responsible, government-approved adults look after them could save the life of even one child, don’t we have an obligation to try?
I resist that mental health argument because they will eventually call wanting a gun a sign of mental illness
I agree Q. The best thing you can do is not prevent people from defending themselves no matter where they are.
I think one way to help would be to have organizations and people in charge assume liability in any violent situation where they have restricted the ability of people to defend themselves by banning guns on said property. Criminal charges too as accessory to murder where victims have died. They have the to duty to assume responsibility for your defense by actively preventing you from defending yourself.
Due to the nature of compulsory education, this should apply to every public school. Also every single government building.
I’m undecided on private property. Is negligence compatible with libertarianism? Thoughts? I haven’t really thought too deeply on negligence to form a position. I would venture to say, that if negligence is compatible then so would this. If negligence is not compatible, then this probably wouldn’t work either for private property.
The vast majority of private places don’t restrict gun posession. At least around here. I think this would be less of a problem than you think.
I’m just looking at places where mass shootings occur. Aurora and Orlando occurred on private property that had, to my understanding, gun-free zones.
I do think the schools are the biggest problem due to compulsory education. College isn’t compulsory so this is unrelated, but there was a push by some VA Tech parents of the shooting victims to hold the school responsible since they prevented students’ from defending themselves but then failed to provide adequate protection.
I think most places would voluntarily take down their gun free zones if they had to bear the responsibility of disarming their patrons. I think it’s workable.
Me, the patrons still choose to enter private gun free zones. Not like you have to go to a movie or a club.
I find it odd that school boards across the country aren’t looking at improved security options – there are plenty of consulting firms who specialize in this area. Obviously, I’m not surprised that the call is for Federal/State action.
I find it odd that school boards across the country aren’t looking at improved security options – there are plenty of consulting firms who specialize in this area.
Well, who’s going to take the pay cut for that?
That bigger pension ain’t much help in the afterlife.
My youngest’s preschool has an armed guard.
I make sure to get him a gift card for the holiday season.
The secondary discussion SHOULD be “What’s up with the Las Vegas shooting that nobody seems to care about anymore?”
I had the exact same thoughts when I was listening to Ben Shapiro today. He was suggesting that more involuntary commitment of people that are mentally deranged might be a solution.
I was surprised by Shapiro’s shallow thinking on this.
Shapiro’s not quite as smart as he thinks he is. He can speak a thousand words per minute, sure, but the thinking behind it is often vapid.
Yep. And, did you know his wife is a doctor?
violence is part of living in a free society
Because those totalitarian regimes are so non-violent. Oh, what? That doesn’t count, my bad.
The answer is government subsidies.
Hitler was unavailable for comment.
Serious question: What do you say to a Hillary-supporting Lefty who understands that military adventurism is wrong, but thinks it is necessary, to convince them that (1) killing people overseas and sending people to kill overseas for lolz is not necessary and is actually counter-productive and (2) none of it is necessary?
Point to their favorite shithole social democratic country that can’t project power for shit and say why shouldn’t we be like them?
Nothing. There is no reasoning with them.
Stick to the counter productive arguement. They may be more receptive to that. Then yell about how these are bush and trumps wars. Should work.
Today, you do nothing. Just ask them for the bodycount number that would make any of our adventurism not worth it. Write the number down, wait for it to happen, and when it does, ask them for an update.
Give them a copy of 1984. You can lean left and still recognize that governments both left and right will always want to fight Eurasia.
Just stick with telling them we are killing people for lolz because shitty straw-men are the most convincing arguments.
I just heard Bob Ryan on Chris Russo tell a story. The way he described it, I thought my God what did these radio personalities do that offended people so much?! So bad he said it ‘crossed the line.’
Turns out one of them made fun of Brady’s agent mocking an Asian accent.
Shock! Horror! People must lose their jobs!
But wait! There’s more! It’s a right-wing show and right-wing shows are edgy and bring in ratings in….the age of Trump!
It’s pretty clear Ryan is a Democrat.
Meanwhile, back on the Democrat plantation, Obama hires a bigoted SJW masking as an artist to paint his mug who once said his work was a play on ‘the kill whitey’ thing. Barry hung out with Bill Ayers and Rev. Wright – two anti-American miscreants.
That’s OKAY though eh Bobby? Eat shit already you ESPN loons.
I can’t take the double standard anymore. It’s beyond the pale.
Never mind all the stupid shit ESPN personalities say all the time about ‘whitey’. Nay a fucken word about Jemele – there it’s truth to power, eh Bobby!?
Meanwhile up here our asshole PM compared the immigration of people from Europe to his fucken retarded ISIS reintegration policy and that’s not offensive?
Fuck. YOU.
/fin rant.
I forgot I meant to add, we never hear people like that say ‘hey, what can you do about Michael Smith…it’s the Age of Obama!”
I’m reposting this here because I’m still pissed off. The reaction of a prog “friend” to the father of one of the victims being insulted on Twitter for wearing a Trump 2020 shirt
To unpiss me off, I’ll link Maggie McNeill’s reaction to the “we should just pass more laws!” thinking, because (a) she’s awesome and (b) she’s right.
It will always be true: Any law you pass, ESPECIALLY ONE LIKE THE ONES PROGRESSIVES WANT TO PASS, has the potential to result in death. And yes, the ones dying ain’t gonna be well off white people, aka the progs (and republicans) who push for those kinds of laws in the first place.
One element of this I was curious about – that photo of him in the Trump shirt was taken yesterday or today? If so, isn’t he sort of interjecting his politics first?
Yeah, it really doesn’t matter at all.
Democrats had control of the presidency and both houses for 2 years. They didn’t pass any gun laws.
Obama sold more guns than anyone else in history.
If less people supported assholes like Trump there would be more gun laws and less guns. Attacking him is wrong, of course, but people like him are the problem.
Forget for the moment that school schootings are not a function of the number of guns available, but of the shooter’s intent. Forget even that nothing short of actual confiscation, which the gun grabbers swear up and down they’re not going to do, will have any significant impact on the number of guns “in circulation”.
We’ve already got a whole slew of laws. We’ve even criminalized such things as murder, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, possession of a firearm with intent to commit a crime, etc. The country is thick with laws on gun purchasing, ownership, possession, and use.
And not a one of those laws have stopped these things from happening. Laws are not magic.
“nothing short of actual confiscation, which the gun grabbers swear up and down they’re not going to do, will have any significant impact on the number of guns “in circulation”.”
I doubt it would make that big a dent. Good luck getting anybody to actually go around confiscating. It would be highly dangerous.
It’s been said many times before – any attempt at gun confiscation in America will result in rivers of blood. It cannot be done peacefully.
rivers of blood and a huge spike in unfortunate boating accidents
Can you imagine the casualties?
The ATF has to show up at, what 30 million houses? Armed to the teeth. And the real danger probably isn’t in the house – it’s all the neighbors in the woods who start picking them off.
That’s what drone strikes are for.
It would be highly dangerous.
Of course, but since when has spilling blood been a problem for the government? You can either give them up voluntarily or we can shoot your dogs and hold you at gunpoint in the middle of the night while we take them from you. And if you shoot back, or “brandish” your weapons, or make a furtive movement, or the cops just get itchy trigger fingers, well…
Do you think the same people who didn’t give a shit when this happened to innocent people in the name of saving children from drugs are going to suddenly start caring when this happens to innocent people in the name of saving children from guns?
depends on where you are. And hown many agents does the ATF have? How many can they loose and still keep it up? There are a shit load actual gun nuts in this country. Once these confiscations start turning violent, word will get out.
Once these confiscations start turning violent, word will get out.
That word being along lines of “yet another drug dealer busted with hoard of guns. See all these drugs we found, whoops, lemme grab this old evidence sticker here.” /thecrowdcheers
I know cops who would quit before being part of it. The rest would be afraid to wear their uniforms after a day or 2.
Some old Asian dude said something about not attacking your enemies where they are strong, but where they are weak. In that situation, insurgents aren’t going to try to target the LEOs when they are armed and ready. (though they might do things like rig the house to explode). Insurgents would go after soft targets. The families and friends of any cop or agent who remains in gov’t employ would be targets. The low-level local politicians who support gun confiscation or don’t speak out against it would be targets. It would be bloody and brutal and lots of innocent people would be dead before it would be over. Attempts to crack down even harder would simply make it worse. That’s why it would be a bloodbath.
Full-scale confiscation would lead to civil war. It’s the only thing I think could ever lead to civil war.
They are not going to call up the National Guard, Katrina-style, going door-to-door all at once. They’re going to have “buybacks”, issue ultimatums, spread propaganda, and then act on tip-offs. The biggest incidents will be the FBI going full Waco on some compounds, but just like Waco they’ll paint them as violent nutjobs and rapists first.
That would be the best possible case. It’d give me a chance to have a few unfortunate river accidents for some of my arsenal, and lay up a couple tens of thousands of rounds of ammo.
Waco cost the feds a federal building in Oklahoma. Imagine that times 100 if they started pulling wacos every week.
An incident on the level of Waco would be the exception, not the rule. And McVeigh’s mass murder of unrelated Federal employees and their children, if it was intended to drum up public support for his cause, had the exact opposite effect. The Feds will barricade their buildings and the public at large will support the ensuing crackdown, if enough people decide to become terrorists like that.
School shootings are a function of the anti-libertarian idea of compulsory education. We had ZERO school shootings back when school wasn’t compulsory.
We also had almost no school shootings before “gun free zones”.
If there were no government schools, then there would be no shootings at givernment schools. QED
If we’re going to have school shootings, I’d prefer they be restricted to government schools.
Forget for the moment that school schootings are not a function of the number of guns available, but of the shooter’s intent.
Actually, a year or two ago, just on a lark (okay, I’m making how much a nerd I am all too plain), I did a regression analysis on gun ownership and homicide rates. The coefficient came back insignificantly negative.
So what you’re saying is that the introduction of new criminal laws intersects with the plight of the poor and minorities targeted by law enforcement. But that’s not what we mean by intersectionality!
A different person gave me their “solution”. Does anyone in the class want to tell me the first thing wrong with this, on top of everything else that’s wrong with it?
Gosh! That sounds like what they do in Mexico!
I wonder what the gun-violence rate is there?
It’s unconstitutional?
Brilliant! We’re gonna need a lot more prisons.
I’d also ask your friend to define “AR-15 like weaponry”
I have a mini 14 that he would probably think is a harmless hunting rifle.
They’re right after semiautomatic pistols.
Along with my M1A and my Arisaka.
An M1A is on my list of things to buy. That is a fine rifle.
Scout Squad, 2-7x Scout scope, Ching Sling. With good ammo, it’ll shoot 1.5-2 MOA out to a couple hundred yards and then it really starts to suffer from the short barrel.
To be fair, it is a Ruger
/blind brand loyalty
I mean, it looks like a solution, but is it final?
I believe that begins at step 5.
Hitler? Wait, no, wrong question.
I own an online retail business (shameless plug), and I really, really do not want to have to remit sales tax to each and every single state that I sell into. The BorgAmazon will handle all that for you. Resistance is futile.Have spent my day finishing up a pro bono project (okay, finishing up the easy part for now) in getting a 501(c)(3) application out for a program to help battered women. Trying to do good in the world. Of course, this makes me not a libertarian, because we’re a bunch of privileged white fucks who would never do anything for the poor and never do anything that didn’t benefit us because we all worship Ayn Rand as a goddess and…
(I’m in a mood. Can y’all tell?)
The foundation I sit on the board of directors for just became a 501(c)(3) last year. This is the first year we were able to tell our donors that they can deduct their contributions from their taxes. Yay!
I think you were here when I told my story about trying to help a battered woman the other day. Be careful is all I can say.
You forgot cisnormative heteropatriarchal shitlord.
He’s obviously a white knighting asshole.
Florida Shooting Live Updates: White Supremacy Group Claims Nikolas Cruz as Member
Here come the all white nationalists are Republicans therefore Republicans want to shoot up schools argument. If you agree with anything a Republican says you are one of them!
I hate how people dig in and throw out reason when these shootings happen.
Isn’t the killer a registered Democrat?
No. That was a different person (spelled wrong and wrong birth date)
Ah. A rant and a wrong comment.
I think I’ll quit while I’m ahead.
I think the interesting statement in the article is that the FBI had received a report about a comment the shooter made and did diddly. Once again they show that the FBI has failed us in several recent mass murder cases.
Yea…something is telling me to remain skeptical of this report.
As in skeptical, I’m calling bullshit. And while the guy they’re quoting may be a legit racist scumbag, he’s doing a great job trolling the hell out of reporters desperate to politicize this to the max to fit their narrative.
Given it appears he targeted anyone regardless of race, noting he was a racist POS seems irrelevant to his motive.
Love the article on an online sales tax. Ends by claiming states miss out on some $13 billion in “revenue” a year. As opposed to consumers/tax payers saving some $13 billion.
Taxes are things other people pay without which your children are deprived of a good education, your family is deprived of responsive emergency services, and your government is practically unable to function at all!
You know who else threw out reason?
Glibs?
Nice!
Nick Gillespie?
Sloopy in 20 years? I kid, I kid.
how old is Baby Reason now? wouldnt it be more like 16-17 years?
Question for Glibs who are interviewing or just got new jobs:
How are you getting most interviews these days? Recruiters, applying for specific jobs, job boards…?
Thanks – I had a good 10 -year run with my current employer but it might be time for a change. I’m not in a rush or anything but seems like a good time to see what’s available.
Good question, I’m in the same Boat
I’d like to know too. I’ve had professionals review my resume, contacted recruitment companies and applied for roughly 30 jobs in the last 2 years. Yet to get a single interview. Quickly losing hope.
Dunno. LinkedIn is awesome for the tech skills I have. Literally got a message a day when I was looking. Not sure it works for anyone else but sales and tech people.
People actually use LinkedIn? I thought it was like MySpace – an artifact of the old web adrift in the tubes.
Says the government employee.
The most painful thing about this job – I spent quite a few hours audting the infrastructure billing to make sure we’re being charged the right amount.
The people billing us are… us. The same agency. It’s all fake dollars, because they do nothing but shuffle around between columns on the ledger, I don’t think they’re even backed by the agency budget.
It felt like such a waste.
Accountants, I get hounded all the time on Linkedin.
Of course, they always pitch me roles for which I am not qualified. “Hey, your background looks perfect for this internal audit position.” Really? Because my profile clearly indicates I have done tax work my entire career and I don’t know shit about internal audit.
I’m looking for a new job too. I am looking for work from home or something close to me, but I have to keep reminding myself those jobs are rare and it will take some time.
I did have a lot of luck with an Amazon recruiter, but they wanted me to move to Seattle and that was a big no.
My comment to Brett aside, I have made it all the way to an in-person interview at a large corporation. It went well, they seemed pleased, and told me I would hear something early next week.
Well, it is not Thursday and no response. When is it ok to check in without coming across as annoying or desperate?
Monday
Word of mouth introductions. Nothing in the history of employment is or was more important than a large and shallow social network and a good reputation. What do you do and where do you do it? I’ll pass on an introduction if I’m able to help.
My biggest hurdle is my internal skills assessment.
My brain’s default position is “If i can do it, it must be easy, or all I’ve been doing is dabbling around the edges, so there’s no point in mentioning it.”
I agree with Leap. Every single job/opportunity I’ve gotten since I was a teenager was through a contact. If you have a good Idea of what you would like to do (or can quickly articulate why you’re just so goddamn good), your best bet might be to start marketing yourself among your networks.
This is harder than firing off resumes, but it really does work.
I got on Indeed everyday, ran a search for everything in the geographic areas I was willing to work in, and applied to everything I thought I qualified for. Took a couple of hundred applications, but I found something.
I would not recommend that, but my professional network all got canned the same time I did.
Looks like Jacob Zuma is out as president of South Africa.
http://www.apnewsarchive.com/2018/The-Latest-Ramaphosa-takes-oath-as-South-Africa-s-president-after-election-in-parliament/id-c51a5471029444bdb803e0d7d43cb70d
Did they physically drag him out, or did he finally concede?
He resigned. I would imagine taxpayer funded golden parachutes will be involved.
Last I heard he was holding out for immunity from proesecution. Did they grant it?
Unknown as yet, Info not available in the link that I shared.
Ramaphosa won’t be as catchy a name for a clear malt beverage.
When I was 8 years old I found an unopened bottle of Zima that somebody had dropped. Instead of doing the smart thing and opening it and having my first illegal drink, I decided to grab the neck bottle and slam it down like a hammer like an idiot. Damn thing exploded in my hand, luckily no stitches.
Out of curiosity I damn near almost bought a sixer of Zima when I saw it in the grocery store last year. Zima!
Liquid Hangover.
During a drunken argument in my youth, i slammed a 5th of rum on the table (more like a pestle than a hammer), the top part of the bottle with the handle snapped off and my wrist continued right into the newly formed edge of the bottom part. Amazingly I didn’t bleed to death while not-seeking-medial-attention. Butterfly bandaids ftw.
On the bright side, that deescalated the argument.
In my early-30s I managed to stab the middle finger of my left hand while trying doing some electrical work on a car. It never quite healed up straight, leaving this white scar gash around the flap of skin. Plus I lost a lot of sensation at the end of that finger.
I could have gone to the ER to get it stitched… but nnnnnoooooo. Instead I bandaged it up, went out to a few bars with this cute blonde chick, and then tried to play some pool – poorly. And no I didn’t get laid that night 🙁
“Zima. Zomething different.”
This was from the WaPo article on the subject:
“In a statement after Ramaphosa’s inauguration, the ANC encouraged him to begin implementing economic reforms — including a controversial policy of forcibly redistributing land, which economists have said could backfire. “The African National Congress has full confidence in President Ramaphosa to build on the foundation laid and focus the country on accelerating our program of fundamental and radical socio-economic transformation,” the statement said.”
Awesome, it’s gonna be like Zimbabwe, with extra Marxism!
Jesus Christ. Zimbabwe is next door to South Africa. How do you get so far up your ass that you decide, well, let’s get some of that?
There are people who fled Zimbabwe asking “Where am I going to go now?”
radical socio-economic transformation never hurt nobody.
radical socio-economic transformation never hurt nobody.
Now, the ones it killed, on the other hand . . .
It’s almost as if you don’t like omelettes, BEAM.
Exactly. You don’t know, until you know.
Also, who gets to define mental illness? That’s the worst part of it.

Someone at Forbes is questioning the White Supremacist angle. Tread lightly, lady
In the tedious “we don’t need your prayers, we need you to do something!!!” genre of editorials, the following is not particularly remarkable.
But…
STASI: You can keep your thoughts and prayers, Trump, but ban assault weapons now
I dunno, I think I would have adopted a pen name had I chosen that line of work.
And all of you, you members of Congress and senators just shut up and stay off of TV if you have any shred of morality left — especially if you have refused to vote for gun control.
There is only one opinion, and everyone else should be silenced.
Good to know their calling for abolition of the Constitution and imposition of a dictatorship. Makes the traitors much easier to spot, and they conveniently just destroyed their own First Amendment protection, too.
Honestly, if your name is Stasi, you should probably rethink the whole “I’m going to professionally agitate for the kinds of things the Actual Stasi did.”
“Scientists call this colder weather a “hole” in overall global warming”
I think weather forecasters just call it weather.
Scientists call it a Null Hypothesis.
We don’t want your prayers and we don’t need your thoughts and wishes, President Trump. And all of you, you members of Congress and senators just shut up and stay off of TV if you have any shred of morality left — especially if you have refused to vote for gun control.
Get off the air! We need the air time for our Sermon-on-the-mount-of-bodies anti-gun shrieking.
I did not read it, but I saw something about an armed “school resource officer” at the school who was somehow or other unaware of the active shooter situation
Or maybe he was hiding in his car.
So you are saying he was doing research on Hope Hicks?
RE: Elizabeth Warren
I think it’s a mistake to hyper-focus on whether or not she has some minuscule amount of Native American blood by demanding genetic testing, etc. She didn’t grow up in poverty on a reservation. She’s pasty white, nobody can tell her ancestry unless she tells them, and she has never faced a single second of discrimination or hardship in her life due to her possibly having a tiny fraction of Native American blood. Yet, she took advantage of affirmative action opportunities offered – in theory, at least – to people who have encountered hardship due to their ancestry. Either she pushed out another applicant who legitimately had a claim to the affirmative action slot, or the whole thing is a sham, or both. This is all true even if a DNA test shows she is 1/64 Cherokee or whatever.
It’s similar to when skeptics of global warming focus on year-to-year temperature measurements. It doesn’t matter if there’s a slight warming trend over the years, the big questions are “what are the effects of warming, both good and bad” and “should we destroy our economy and give all our money and power to bureaucrats in a vain attempt to reduce the warming trend”? I fear that focusing on minor data points simply opens critics up to charges of goalpost shifting if/when the data points are shown to be accurate.
Her defenders claim there isn’t proof she took advantage of it. Shoot, they even go as far as to accept what she says at face value. At least, that’s what ‘Marc Williams’ in the comments section on FB on an article was screaming about yesterday.
It’s also okay she profited off foreclosed homes because she speaks for the downtrodden.
It’s also okay she profited off foreclosed homes because she speaks for the downtrodden.
That alone should effect an epidemic of fatal aneurysms. If there was any blood getting to peoples brains in the first place.
A very good point.
I’m 1/128 Jeep Wrangler.
Ahem. But we know the real question is TJ or YJ.
crazy automotive chromosomes.
Did she take an ‘affirmative action slot’? Seems to me she applied for a job anyone could get and threw in the Indian bit thinking it might help. And maybe it did, but that’s different than taking a dedicated minority spot. She’s still a lying liar, no need to exaggerate.
Since I think a dedicated minority slot is illegal using that standard for fraud seems exceptionally high.
she has never faced a single second of discrimination or hardship in her life due to her possibly having a tiny fraction of Native American blood.
Just like the real native Americans.
Scientists call this colder weather a “hole” in overall global warming, or a “warming hole.”
STEVE SMITH KNOW ALL ABOUT WARMING HOLE. AND BY WARMING HOLE, MEAN …
STEVE NO NEED WEATHER TO WARM HOLE. STEVE JUST USE FRICTION.
HARD, FAST, CONTINUOUS FRICTION.
I think one way to help would be to have organizations and people in charge assume liability in any violent situation where they have restricted the ability of people to defend themselves by banning guns on said property.
I think this is a good point. Instead of suing Remington, sue the school board.
The obvious down side is that they will use that as an excuse to make the schools even more like concentration camps.
Public school is going to have to get even worse before it gets better. Just tell your kids they’re going to the amusement park before you send them to school, they’ll never see it coming.
It’s never going to get better, shut it down now.
I assume there are a bunch of people braying about the “Australian model” of gun control, while blithely ignoring the fact that only 20% or so of the firearms in the country were surrendered.
Hard to work up the will to go mass shooting when digesting a kangaroo and vegemite sandwich.
And while escaping from the mass hordes of insects and animals that are constantly trying to kill you.
The actual problem is wasting all your ammo on schoolchildren only to get eaten by dropbears.
I think that would be a real incentive for me to perpetrate a mass shooting, tbh. That shit is nasty.
Lemme guess, ya bloody POM, marmite fan, amirite?
Not that either. Still nasty. There’s only one thing marmite and/or vegemite works on, and that’s “Twiglets“.
Hopefully Trump’s Wall keeps that garbage out of here.
There are a few British foodstuffs I still get hold of when I can, but the list is pretty short.
There’s two British foodstuffs I need: HP Sauce and Jaffa cakes. The former I can find everywhere, the latter I can’t find anywhere lately.
HP Sauce ain’t a problem. Jaffa cakes? maybe. But there are US near-equivalents.
You need a shipment?
Amazon stock both, and they don’t rape you for shipping either
Anyone see Invisible Furry Hand lately?
NYT reporting the shooter arrived at the school via Uber. When will we have sensible Uber control?????
“What is the purpose of this trip?”
“I’m going to go shoot up my old school, because I hate those motherfuckers.”
“Haha, okay, I’m gonna just go ahead and put ‘shopping’ down.”
“Haha, okay, I’m gonna just go ahead and put ‘shopping’ down.”
lol.
I’m going to hell.
“
Haha, okay,Hmmm, that’s not listed in the dropdown, I’m gonna just go ahead and put down ‘shopping’.”For you writers out there, Agorist Writers Workshop have posted the call for submissions to their annual short story anthology. It would be fun to see some Glibs represented!
If it is truly an Agorist group, shouldn’t we buy the short story on the black market and submit it under a pseudonym?
Don’t Do It!!! How Do You Know They Will Pay You!!!!
ooh interesting link! I’m tempted though I’m pretty rusty on the whole “short story” thing.
It’s time for everyone to switch places! Yeee-haw, let’s do the Washington shuffle:
Democrats: Passing a twenty week abortion ban would do nothing, because people would still get those abortions illegally
Republicans: Yeah, but it totals less than 5% of total abortions and virtually no other industrialized nation in the world allows them
*mass shooting*
Republicans: Passing an assault weapons ban would do nothing, because people would still get those guns illegally
Democrats: *autistic screeching*
Prohibition works because laws are magic!
Abortions were illegal. There were nowhere near millions of them at that time. Guns have been outlawed, and crime was not reduced.
Whatever you may think about how equal those are, the numbers show they are not.
There’s a lot of reasons for the false equivalence anyway. Guns are used for defense. Guns are used to stop attacks with guns. Bans don’t remove guns from law enforcement. Guns are a method to kill, there are many others gun bans won’t stop. Guns are in the Constitution, etc.
I’m applying some of the things I’ve read recently to school shootings. Here is an article about Social Proof Theory, which states that people who are uncertain about how to behave will look to the group for cues:
https://www.psychologynoteshq.com/social-proof/
Then I found this one by Malcolm Gladwell, comparing the way school shooters behave to the way people behave in a riot:
https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2015/10/19/thresholds-of-violence
Putting those two together, you find that school shooters are looking to each other for inspiration, and as time goes on the shooters become less and less “out there” and more toward “normal”. I don’t know what will stop the next shooting, but gun control and locking up mentally ill people won’t do it. I’m more inclined to say we need to keep these kids from being glamorized in the media. Which in itself is a huge task.
Nobody dares to admit that schools are complicit in creating mental illness.
how not to report mass shootings
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PezlFNTGWv4
Common-sense media control?
Hey, I’m all for freedom of speech and freedom of the press, but if you read Gladwell’s article, you’ll find that most of these kids idolized other mass shooters. The difference between now and 30 years ago is that you have 24/7 saturation from traditional media and social media.
which states that people who are uncertain about how to behave will look to the group for cues
Duh?
Love the article on an online sales tax. Ends by claiming states miss out on some $13 billion in “revenue” a year. As opposed to consumers/tax payers saving some $13 billion.

LOL
There are a few British foodstuffs I still get hold of when I can, but the list is pretty short.
Keiller & Sons Dundee Three Fruits Marmalade is teh awesome.
Other than that…
I haven’t seen that in a very long time.
“Flashback 30 Years: Guns Were in Schools … and Nothing Happened
The millennial generation might be surprised to learn that theirs is the first without guns in school. Just 30 years ago, high school kids rode the bus with rifles and shot their guns at high school rifle ranges.
After another school shooting, it’s time to ask: what changed?
Cross guns off the list of things that changed in thirty years. In 1985, semi-automatic rifles existed, and a semi-automatic rifle was used in Florida. Guns didn’t suddenly decide to visit mayhem on schools. Guns can’t decide.”
https://pjmedia.com/jchristianadams/flashback-30-years-guns-schools-nothing-happened/
I’ve said this here countless times, so at the risk of being redundant. When I was in high school, there was a parking lot full of pickup trucks with gun racks full of guns in them. No one thought shit of it and no one even got shot and there was never anyone even shooting. What’s changed? I don’t know, drugs kids are pumped full of for ADD? No idea. Also, weed was everywhere and I never seen any swat teams with K9’s sniffing lockers. In fact, I never once saw a cop on school grounds, in 4 years, not even once.
#metoo. And I went to high school a lot more recently than you did.
Guns became taboo in real life while glorified in movies and tv.
“What’s changed? ”
The education has gotten shittier, for one.
I liked that article linked in the AM lynx about compulsory, centralized, one-size fits all education. The more I’ve thought about it today, it really seems like that could be a contributing factor in creating these little monsters.
This one.
I didn’t even read the AM lynx yesterday, I was swamped at work the moment I got in.
Kids don’t respect their parents or teachers anymore, because parents and teachers have shirked their responsibility and deferred it to the state. The state is comprised of a bunch of totally incompetent morons who can’t even take care of their own affairs, let alone be a role model and moral compass for children.
I think the population of the country has just expanded. More people more chances for nutjobs to be born. That and the constant media coverage makes sure we hear about every incident that happens. There have always been shit parents and shit kids.
In other news, Piers Morgan is an idiot.
https://twitter.com/piersmorgan/status/964202088799469569
You don’t say!
This is going to blow up in their faces. Badly.
There only source for any of this is a white supremacist publicity whore who runs a Florida secessionist outfit (guy is either insane or a complete shyster – probably both) and supposedly 3 unnamed students at the school who claim to have seen Jared or whatever with Cruz all the time despite the Republic of Florida group being located hundreds of miles away.
The rumor was started on 4chan and ‘confirmed’ by the ADL calling to ask if he was a member.
This Jared guy has said various things. He didn’t know Cruz personally, but then in other articles is saying shit like he hadn’t spoken to him recently.
He didn’t know Cruz personally, but then in other articles is saying shit like he hadn’t spoken to him recently.
Consequence of trying to glom-on without being prosecute-able.
“Can you even imagine how fast laws would be changed if he’d been a MUSLIM shooter/terrorist?”
Umm, no, I can’t. There’s been several mass shootings by Muslims in recent history, including the nightclub in FL where more than 50 people died. WTF you babbling about Piers?
Didn’t he pull this EXACT same quote after Vegas? I swear I’ve heard it before, as well as the exact same Shapiro smackdown pointing out that no laws were changed after Orlando or San Bernardino.
get a new schtick, Piers. Fauslamphobia is a dumb look.
On the Shooting
People forget that bad things will continue to happen no matter how many laws there are or how strict the punishments are or how strongly the laws are enforced.
There may be room for improvement, but it isn’t going to come from more laws or more cops or harsher punishments.
also worth noting
***
The frequency in which mass shootings occur depends upon definition. In recent years, the number of public mass shootings has increased substantially, even though there has been a massive decrease in gun related deaths.[9] Studies indicate that the rate at which public mass shootings occur has tripled since 2011. Between 1982 and 2011, a mass shooting occurred roughly once every 200 days. However, between 2011 and 2014 that rate has accelerated greatly with at least one mass shooting occurring every 64 days in the United States.[10]
***
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_shootings_in_the_United_States
The most practical thing would be to have armed guards present. The common element in all US mass shootings is that they happened in gun-free zones.
Since 1950, 98.4% of mass shootings have been in gun-free zones.
Well there’s your problem, Vern.
What a lot of people seem to not know, is that this doesn’t just happen in the USA. It just doesn’t get reported. I watch Globo news with my wife, or even if I don’t, she tells me everything. Brazil has mass shooting all of the time, including schools. They have the strictest gun laws, but it doesn’t stop anyone from getting guns. The gangs in the favelas are armed to the teeth with every kind of scary gun you can get here.
And not a one of those laws have stopped these things from happening. Laws are not magic.
Aaand, another crazy person makes the list.
You know, following all the screeching, I’d like to see some politician with a sense of humor offer up the “For the Chilluns” Amendment. The Amendment would do two things – it would repeal the Second Amendment and it would repeal all federal protections at the federal or state level on abortion rights. We hear both tribe screech incessantly about how throwing away the rights of the other tribe is a moral and ethical imperative. Let’s put that to the test. If banning guns is all that important to you, let’s see if you’re willing to put your money where your mouth is. If abortion is murder, why aren’t you willing to give up your guns to stop it. Me, personally, I’d be opposed to either provision. But, I think it would be delightful to watch both sides twisting themselves in knots to explain why it’s ultra-uber-important that people give up rights they don’t value, just not at the expense of the rights they do.
If we’re going to make all guns illegal, that means for everyone. The cops included and no armed guards for congress critters. Because why would they need guns if the people don’t have them? And I mean gun control is always 100% effective, so there would be no guns, just ask any prog. So no one needs a gun.

Aaaannnndddd…..the White Supremacist talking point is bunk. People were already poking holes in the notion: https://twitter.com/jjmacnab/status/964232763317497856
Turns out people lie on 4chan (yes, that is where the White Supremacist talking point was first found)
It also turns out you shouldn’t use the head of a white supremacist outfit that seeks to draw attention to itself as your only source. Their level of dishonesty isn’t surprising. But at what point does their sheer incompetence start to sink in?
They just gave one of those hated alt-righters a platform and more exposure than he ever would have had otherwise.
It’s called the Isis method.
“Turns out people lie on 4chan ”
they’re already blaming the source rather than the reporters who ran with the story like it was their scoop of the century

UPDATE: Hours after claiming a connection to Cruz, ROF leader Jordan Jereb said he had been misunderstood.
The Dallas paper locked me out, becuz adblocker, but they are reporting one or maybe two incidents of a student bringing a gun to school in the Dallas Fort Worth area. Of course, my first question is, “Is this kid saying, ‘If they won’t protect me, I will'” or is it a copycat?
My guess is self-help.
If anyone is still around and interested in this, there were arrest for guns at three separate schools in the Metroplex: Garland, Plano, and Flower Mound.
It could be both.
Just got my first check today with crumbs in it. $6500 a year extra. Hey, Nancaah, were you Nancaah? NEEDZ MOAR CRUMBS! MAKING CRUMBS GREAT AGAIN!
I’m most disappointed in Drudge jumping on the white supremacist angle. Like, he didn’t see the retraction coming?
Drudge can be as stupid and as histrionic as the rest of them, all while using BIG RED LETTERS.
Histrionic? Yes. But I have tended to dismiss that in more cynical terms. It keeps people clicking and coming back. Actually buying into into reports that Cruz was a white supremacist based on solely the word of some nut job white power nut who wants attention? That definitely is pretty dumb.
A different person gave me their “solution”. Does anyone in the class want to tell me the first thing wrong with this, on top of everything else that’s wrong with it?
Lacks finality.
“Taylor Swift is gay, and I have evidence for days
Where shall I begin?
Look, I’m not pushing a gay agenda because I’m addicted to the drama, I’m pushing a gay agenda because I know love when I see it. Who are we to put Taylor in a box just because our parents raised us in some sick, heteronormative society, where we’d rather see her with bread boy Joe Alwyn or fucking Tom Hiddleston? Are you fucking KIDDING me? But it doesn’t matter anymore.”

I honestly think “Babe” is trying to make Buzzfeed look like a reputable news source in comparison.
Submitted about the author, without comment:
Is there an explicit rule that every Feminist On The Internet Article needs to include the author asking the audience if the audience is, in fact, kidding the author?
How would that work, anyway? Like, is the Babe office* just inundated with post cards that say “Why did the chicken cross the road?”
*hahah, its five almosthomeless hacks sharing a one bedroom apartment and leeching wifi off a neighbor.
Pics or it didn’t happen.
Though fuzzy and at a distance, there is, in fact, pictorial evidence.

The only people holding that opinion are jealous they’re not kissing Loki themselves.

Intriguing. TS might be the one chick I could talk my wife into a threesome with. But honey, it’s Taylor Swift!
In other news, Piers Morgan is an idiot.
Aww, bless his heart.
Suckin too many limes gives you brain damage.
Just imagine if Coach had been allowed to carry in school…*sigh*
I had a Craig T. Nelson moment before the anvil hit…
That bugs the hell out of me. Coach had the balls to save the kids, shame on the grabbers for not giving him the means to save himself.
Evil.
If 10% of the teachers were strapped, the asshole wouldn’t have even made the attempt to shoot up the place.
The statistical odds of it happening are close to nil but just imagine if he had been illegally carrying and stopped the shooting.
He was also supposedly a security guard. I don’t get it.
For any fans of Tangerine Dream, the Stranger Things soundtrack(s) are very, very good.

Yep. I have both volumes of season 1. They’re also a nice nod to John Carpenter’s scores.
Nothing shows how much you care like attacking the Treasury Secretary over gun policy. Totally not grandstanding.
https://www.vox.com/2016/6/13/11911948/australian-comedian-us-gun-laws
Some of his gems from the video and article:
“In Australia, we had the biggest massacre on earth, and the Australian government went: “That’s it! NO MORE GUNS.” And we all went, “Yeah, all right then, that seems fair enough, really.”
Now in America, you had the Sandy Hook massacre, where little tiny children died. And your government went, “Maybe … we’ll get rid of the big guns?” And 50 percent of you went, “FUCK YOU, DON’T TAKE MY GUNS.”
“By the way. Most people who are breaking into your house just want your fucking TV! You think that people are coming to murder your family? How many fucking enemies do you have?”
“That’s the thing. “Why should I have my guns taken off me? I’ve done nothing wrong.” Look, I agree with you. If you’re a responsible gun owner and you don’t fuck around with them, then you should be allowed your guns. You really should. But that’s not how society works. We have to play to the 1% that are such fuckwits they ruin it for the rest of us.”
I had to listen to this comic in my friend’s car and he did this routine. He used so many straw-men and got his facts all fucked up and shit, so I couldn’t even come up with a coherent argument because he was so wrong on so many levels. People like him will never debate someone knowledgeable about guns and the laws pertaining to them because they know they would get eaten alive and even if they did, all they would resort to is lies, ad hominems and straw man arguments.
There are some people who could be pursuaded to at least consider a different alternative to the gun control argument but assholes like Jeffries should only get one answer: “Fuck off slaver. If you want me to give up my guns, come and get them.” And I hate to be an absolutist but concerning this issue, never fucking give an inch.
We have to play to the 1% that are such fuckwits they ruin it for the rest of us.
No, we have to quit pretending that liberty is all flowers and puppies. Freedom makes us richer in many ways, but it’s not asshole-repellent.
Besides, you can’t have them, motherfucker.
Nothing is funnier than being lectured at about gun control.
… by citizens of a nation that was established as a prison.
Mate, I hope those shackles weigh light upon your wrists and ankles.
Meh – Gun Control is not going to happen. If Sandy Hook didn’t do it, then nothing (well short of ???) will.
But I could be wrong.
I think a lot of Senators and Reps are smart enough to not push the envelop too far or else they will be voted out of office.
Didn’t they actually only confiscate like 20% (less than that I think) of the guns in Australia with that buyback?
Most people who are breaking into your house just want your fucking TV!
And when I tell them No? What then, rock-paper-scissors? They leave quietly? We sit down with some beers and become besties?
Oh, that’s right, i get my 150lb ass stomped on. Pass.
(actually, i havent weighed in a bit, but i was 136 last time i went to the doctor. yeah, 4yrs ago, but my 1″ of pinchable belly flab has remained constant, and there’s naught else to me but skin and bones in this 5’10” frame.)
Aw, lucky.
Me? Now, 5’4, 156. 3 years ago, 207. 9 years ago, just back from Tanzania, 135.
That TX beer and BBQ is what did it.
This is the attempted mass shooting that happened yesterday that didn’t get covered by the media. It’s almost a success story.
Wow. Do you want to see some straight up bullshit? Go to CNN’s home page right now and scroll down to the little collection of links they’ve posted titled “This keeps happening again and again and again …”
Tonight’s Dinner (And Tomorrow’s Lunch):
5 Chicken Drumsticks
1/4 lb peppered slab bacon
2 cans Cream of Mushroom Soup
2 Cans chunk chicken
1 Small Can corn
1 small can peas
1 small can button mushrooms
Preheat oven to 350.
Wrap Bacon around chicken, lay in bottom of pan.
In another container, mix the canned ingredients.
Pour soup mix over chicken/bacon.
Bake until chicken is cooked. Have soup as side.
This looks like something good to make at the beginning of the week and have lunch for 3 or so days.
That was kind of the idea – get a few meals out of one batch. Half of it is in the fridge now. Half I already ate, but I probably should have only eaten a quarter of it.
Sounds delicious. Don’t forget to buy toilet paper.
I’m paranoid about running out of that and soap, so I have a decent supply.
That’s called “common sense” not paranoia. I guess all those Easy Going people can make due wiping their ass with paper- or handtowels. Good for them. Slobs.
Oh, you were expecting digestive issues.
The Soviets were proud of the fact that there was never a successful assassination of a Politburo member or other high-ranking party member. They credited this to strict gun control.
Oh Snopes…never change.

RATING
MOSTLY FALSE
WHAT’S TRUE
Mass killings of civilians by military dictatorships in the 1900s were more often than not preceded by the confiscation of firearms from targeted populations, a task made easier by laws requiring the registration and/or licensing of privately-owned weapons.
WHAT’S FALSE
“Gun control” isn’t synonymous with gun confiscation; in some cases where genocides took place, the gun laws in force had existed for years, even decades; evidence does not demonstrate a causal link between gun control and mass exterminations.
***
https://www.snopes.com/politics/guns/gunhistory.asp
I can think of at least one former member of the original Politburo who was assassinated.
It’s different when an ex-member is unpersoned.
High ranking politburo members were killed legally. They called these killings purges.
evidence does not demonstrate a causal link between gun control and mass exterminations
Well, yes, because that doesn’t even make any sense.
By contrast, how many US politicians (even a two-bit school board members) were successfully assassinated in the last 50 years? Can we attribute the low numbers to LACK of gun control?
http://marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolution/2015/12/how-martial-a-country-should-the-united-states-be.html
Interesting perspective making the point that the US is also one of the few big martial countries left. With most of those OECD countries taking advantage of US military power and projection so they don’t need to have a martial culture. Their view on how libertarians approach the issue comes across as only knowing libertine libertarians.
to generalize a bit
Many people fail to recognize that most people view themselves as members of groups which are usually fighting with other groups.
Just because people live together doesn’t mean they will share the same views or like each other. This is because there are great differences in beliefs and habits.
on a side note,
About 70 countries have less than a million people and another 50 have between 1 and 10 million. Only 26 countries have more than 50 million people.
As usual, Tyler Cowen is arrogant and lazy. He takes a statistical coincidence and makes wild suppositions as if it weren’t a coincidence.
What was Nazi Germany’s percentage of global military spending versus global gun ownership rates? What was Nazi Germany’s martial culture? What was Cold War USSR’s global military spending percentage? What was USSR’s gun ownership rate?
Without context, the statistics can’t be used for anything approaching intelligence, and Cowen happily obliges.

The Special Atomic Demolition Munition (SADM) was a family of man-portable nuclear weapons fielded by the US military in the 1960s, but never used in combat. The US Army planned to use the weapons in Europe in the event of a Soviet invasion. US Army Green Light Teams or Engineer Atomic Demolition Munitions Specialists, would use the weapon to destroy, irradiate and deny key routes of communication through limited terrain such as the Fulda Gap. Troops were trained to parachute into Soviet-occupied western Europe with the SADM and destroy power plants, bridges, and dams.

Awesome. Wish we’d used them on the Taliban.
“Have a little fire, Scarecrow!”
You want Feral Ghouls coming out of Khyber?
One of Richard Marcinko’s books was about chasing down some of them that were stolen out of the stockpile.
People forget how hard we were ready to go at the commies 30 years ago.
The SADMs, like the Crocketts were more a psychological weapon than anything else, even given the strategic importance of denying access to the Fulda Gap to the Soviets.
Certainly, by the 80’s NATO’s defensive plan for the area had factored denial-of-access weapons like these out of the battle plan. They were the cold war’s equivalent of gas attacks in WW2.
I liked Atomic Annie the best. She was a real blast – guns and bombs!.
I think they were for very specific targets if we lost air superiority. Bridges, headquarters, that kind of stuff. They weren’t useful battlefield weapons.
Well, the SADMs were purely denial-of-access devices. Perfect when you’re in retreat or trying to “shape” an offensive being brought against you, but deployment was a two man team, on the ground, at the objective.
By the 80’s, all the Games people had done their numbers and they all had a pretty good idea of the life expectancy of a bridging or comm unit. Much of the effort was made to covertly harden certain targets so that any advance into West Germany followed anticipated/predetermined paths. that favored Western defense. Most of the simulations and plans ultimately relied on disrupting soviet logistics ensuring armor’s range was as restricted as possible.
Scary times.
My local university has a weekly jazz show that I like to listen to on Thursdays. Unfortunately the middle aged volunteer DJ decided to interject this before he spun the last track of his show: “I’m sorry about the departure, but I thought I would mention that there is a bill in Congress right now that would allow you to concealed carry a gun anywhere in the US. In light of what happened yesterday in Florida, think about that for a bit.”
Dude, fuck you for hashing my mellow with this idiotic thoughtless bullshit. There are like 20 listeners and you couldn’t help yourself with this puny platform? Highly profound, really made me think., Bud.
Staying on topic: Too much rage to digest, what’s better? The RINO or the pants-shitting Sheriff basically saying “hey don’t blame my guys if you get shot down for peaceably open carrying.”
Link fail
You should have cheered and called back “No more defenseless students!”
think about that for a bit
Well, besides defensive benefits of carrying concealed, the two things have nothing to do with each other.

Aldrich Ames on polygraphs

This was brought up in the (quite awesome) Penn & Teller Bullshit episode on polygraphs.

In 1976, Ames was assigned to New York City where he handled two important Soviet assets. His performance was excellent, he received several promotions and bonuses, and was ranked above most operations officers in his pay grade, although his tendency to procrastinate in submissions of financial accounting was noted. Ames’ inattention to details also led him to make two important security violations, including once leaving a briefcase of classified operational materials on the subway. Ames apparently received only a verbal reprimand.[11]
In 1981, Ames accepted a posting to Mexico City while his wife remained in New York. His evaluations in Mexico were mediocre at best, and he engaged in at least three extramarital affairs. In October 1982, Ames began an affair with María del Rosario Casas Dupuy, a cultural attaché in the Colombian Embassy and a CIA informant. Despite CIA regulations, Ames did not report his romance with a foreign national to his superiors, even though some of his colleagues were well aware of it. Ames’ lackluster performance reviews were in part the result of heavy drinking. At a diplomatic reception in Mexico City, Ames got into a loud, drunken argument with a Cuban official that “caused alarm” among his superiors.[12]

FDA approves first blood test that can help diagnose a concussion
I like the direction this is going. When I coached hockey, the concussion ‘protocol’ was laughable. It sure would be nice to have real evidence of a TBI.
How much is the test, $20 million? Fuck the FDA, they are the worst thing in medicine since blood letting.
Right? Why not contract a portable MRI to just sit parked outside the arena?
When we talk about the frequency of these sorts of mass killings, I tend to lean towards the angle that the non-Muslim variety is very much motivated by being recognized. The attention on these events is inevitable in today’s media climate, but I don’t understand the fascination with the individuals behind the attacks much myself. I mean, they tend to have similarities. They are never particularly bright individuals and even if they had some ideological beliefs, they are going to be retarded beyond belief.
But here we have an example of a potential attack stopped by a family member, and this kid kept a notebook of his thoughts and plans:
http://dfw.cbslocal.com/2018/02/15/grandmother-stops-school-shooting/
I mean, even if you somehow found a way to keep guns out of their hands, they’ll find other ways. As the Jihadis have shown us. You don’t even have to be that creative.
And meanwhile, some media is STILL going with the white supremacist angle. New stories continue to get posted.
No, the world really isn’t scrambling to learn about this asshole anymore than they are the media whore whose message you are kind enough to put out in a nice handy little guide!

Didn’t the police debunk this claim? That’s what the daily wire newsfeed says.
In Stone Age cultures, people (especially men) who are oddballs, loners, misfits, etc, are trained to be shamans. This gives them a role which is respectable and fits their eccentric nature.
There isn’t a good equivalent role in modern societies, aside from stand-up comedian.
There are a ton of jobs for weirdos in our society, IMO.
Even I got a job.

The American culture glamorizes serial killers, mass murderers, prolific criminals to a greater degree than other cultures. It didn’t start today either: Natural Born Killers and Bonnie and Clyde aren’t recent movies. If an acclaimed director is likely to make a movie about the perpetrators of a school shooting, some guys will find it appealing. I might sound like a scold–even though I actually like some of these movies myself–but it is a factor that has some explanatory power. Obviously, there are other issues. Unlike supporters of gun control, I’m not going to claim that my theory is the only true explanation.

What article?
It bothers me the more I think about it.
If anything deserves a top to bottom rebuild, it’s our industrial age school system. There’s no excuse to sort kids by age and not ability, and to not provide them with a means to work at their own pace.
There’s also no reason any child should have to spend more than 10 hours in school a week, if not desired. It’s child abuse.
The thing is, if you made it such that a certain proficiency level in certain areas like reading comprehension, mathematics, and maybe scientific method were goals given to children and parents, most parents and children would want to hurry up and reach the minimum proficiency as fast as possible.
The school system is designed for the sole purpose of retarding development so that the nitwits don’t get their feelings hurt. “Why should my future earnings be affected merely because I’m a lazy shit-for-brains? I’m under-privileged!” The solution is to slow everyone else down to the point where their brains don’t develop.
Of course, prior to the welfare system of education, people had to pay their own way and wanted to be proficient as fast as possible so they didn’t piss away hard-earned money. Now that someone else is paying for it, there is no surprise that the motivation to proceed quickly has been retarded.
“The school system is designed for the sole purpose of retarding development so that the nitwits don’t get their feelings hurt. ”
Careful. My daughter has learning disabilities which means she learns at a slower pace, but is not incapable of learning the material.
But if you do that, then the welfare system will be totes unfair!!
Yeah. If were up to me, as soon as a kid can score 1000 on the SAT, here’s your diploma, no more school for you.
I read that past an IQ of 130, all that matters is how hard you work. Makes sense.
“means to work at their own pace.”
So much this. I was bored to tears through school having to work at the same pace as the slow kids. I hated school for this. I could have learned the same stuff in about an hour and a half a day.
Sometimes I wonder what might ahve been had I not so frequently told to stop asking/answering questions so the slow kids could “have a chance” (A chance they seemed disinclined to make use of).
I had the same problem, but even worse. When my mother got sick, I was sent to stay with my grandparents for a while. I spent one year in a one-room schoolhouse in northern Arkansas (in 1973, I think). First through sixth grade were all in the same class.
The teacher had no idea what to do with me (I had an IQ that was off the charts), so he just let me work as quickly as I wanted. In four months, I had inhaled every textbook in the entire building and was hunting for more. The Iowa skills test said I had the reading level of the average college sophomore.
Unfortuntely, I went back to suburban Indianapolis for the next semester of second grade. I was so bored, I spent the next four years causing every sort of trouble imaginable. The school actually put me in Special Ed for a few days until my parents got a lawyer involved. They gave me another IQ test, which came up in the 190’s.
After this, a few teachers made (at least) some attempt to give me enough extra work to keep me entertained (plus I inhaled the entire local branch of the public library).
However, I still never enjoyed school and rebelled at every opportunity, until probably my second statistics class (which finally became difficult enough to fully use my mind).
Even now, I don’t like ‘educational’ topics because they don’t even begin to engage my logic centers.
I read that the main factors for success in both school and work are conformity, obedience, and intelligence.
If you’re willing to kiss someone’s ass and tell them it tastes like ice cream, you’ll never be unemployed.
Socialization based on age seems like a decent reason. Of course that would be admitting that the main point of school is controlled socialization with a side helping of indoctrination instead of classical education.
The social skills learned in school are the same as the ones learned in prison.
School and church cause more mental illness than all the drugs put together.
dividing by age is bad idea. mixing ages and abilities is best.
Kids should learn how to socialize with adults. We don’t give then a chance to do that. They grow up only interacting with other kids.
I would argue that it isn’t the industrial age, it’s the post-WWII age. Prior to WWII, education wasn’t compulsory past 8th grade (age 13) and you were expected to start making mature decisions about employment or furthering your education by then. Growing up I ahd several relatives and neighbors who went to work at age 13 and never went past 8th grade. Now 18-year olds go to college by default because K-12 provided them with no job skills and no decision-making skills whatsoever; any kid that has skills or can make decisions is either getting encouragement for that at home or is one of the sub-1% of the population that is completely self-motivated from a very young age.

It’s all about the narrative, bro, it’s about the end, not about the means. See former USSR, Mao’s Red China, the Khmer Rouge, Castro’s Cuba. It never changes, these are the same people.
Yet, the media is continuing to run with their own preferred narrative.
Posted/updated 40 minutes ago, from CNN. If their smoking gun evidence, the word of a white separatist, falls apart, they’ll just change it ever so slightly. PEOPLE DIE. BAD THINGS HAPPEN. THERE IS NO *RIGHT* TO SAFETY.
There’s a right to self-defense, which our benevolent superiors have been working tirelessly to dismantle, but no one and nothing can guarantee your safety. You can prepare yourself as best you can, but there could still be a bus lurking around the corner ready to turn you into a grease stain.

Sometimes the folk who come to your school to kill you are the government….or occupiers your government couldn’t save you from. It’s because of the high cost of being unarmed that we are armed. Palmiry is not an outlier: it is the norm in human and recent history. Uganda, Guatemala, China, Russia, Poland, Cambodia, Sudan, Yemen, Yugoslavia, Ireland: every day there is massacre somewhere.
Problem is: we do live in a “FUCKING FANTASY WORLD.” Seatbelts and vaccinations and insurance have taught us we have the right to survive everything, and, if we don’t, our heirs will at least cash in. There was a day when a simple scratch could kill you, and that day might well return soon….after we have long-since forgotten how to be careful and how to look out for ourselves.
yup
I’m sure things will work out fine when we hand gun sales and distribution over to the cartels and street gangs like we have done with drugs. I mean you can only buy prohibited drugs in 100% of high schools after spending 50 years and billions of dollars doubling down on the WOD. I kind of look forward to buying RPGs at the local bar.
If only we could do to guns what we have done to drugs we would be rid of them in no time flat. Make it a felony to own one, just like it is a felony to possess most illegal drugs. When was the last time you heard of anyone doing an illegal drug in this country? It doesn’t happen. And we did it on the cheap and have one of the lowest prison populations in the world. Time for a War on Guns!

GET. OUT. OF. MY. HEAD.
Actually, when I made this comparison, I said that it was racially motivated killings::progressives. The point I was making was that, as a normative matter, not all deaths have equal moral weight. The which ones matter more depends on your moral tribe. This clarified a lot for me. Why does Obama cry when there’s a school shooting, but he orders a drone strike on a wedding. How does some person get hopped up over the threat of a Jihadist crossing the southern border but get hyper-rational about swimming pools killing more toddlers than guns?
The answer is, there’s a subset of murders that are particularly vile for some people.
Helped me realize what mine was – murder by state actors, especially those with qualified immunity.

Gun control. Obvious prog strategy is to keep blasting us with the “epidemic” and “do something!” Until the pressure it too great and they get the camel’s nose I to the tent. And keep it up…
Not helping matters is I’m not sure Trump will be able to withstand the pressure.
That worries me too.
Wasn’t he pro-gun control at one point?
He strikes me as the sort of guy who would cave if he thinks something must be done. And he might think the Dems will like him if he does so.
Even if he personally might feel this way (I’m not sure he does) I think he has enough smart advisors around him to tell him that his reelection is utterly impossible if he takes any action. Erase the gun vote and he gets absolutely slaughtered in an election.
I wouldn’t be so sanguine. Trump is hubristic enough to believe that his people will love him no matter what he does.
I believe so.
The question is did he believe it then? Or has he changed his mind?
In the Oxford English Dictionary, a picture of Trump is what they use for the definition of “mercurial”.
Honest question: Why would we spend an erg of energy trying to recall the vacillations of an unprincipled man?
Trump may have or yet do something useful, but it won’t be the result of his having long-held a studied opinion, campaigned upon same, and then having marshalled through relevant legislation or having managed the executive in a coherent and consistent manner.
Being excited when he steers occasionally our way or disappointed when he careens onto a moronic tangent are equally pointless reactions. At this point, reading the paper has come to be worse than being cornered by a truck-driver uncle at the reunion for twenty minutes.

It happens here because it has become a cultural touchstone. With each new shooting, the next one becomes more likely to occur. I’m not certain what it is reflective of in the culture, but it is fucked up and goes beyond the simple argument of guns.

I have to believe Nasheed is performing. He’s taken positions that are nuttier than those of the most fervent Nation of Islam adherents.

So if someone voluntarily seeks treatment for a mental disorder, they should have their 2A right revoked?
With that idea in mind, I was prescribed Zyban™ (aka Wellbutrin) to help me quit tobacco. However, wellbutin is a pretty commonly prescribed antidepressant. Since my prescription is through the VA, am I gonna pop-up on some “list” when it comes to a gun purchase?
no
On its day, the Sun-Sentinel can make the New York Times look right wing.
I’m not sure whether the latter part is referring specifically to the former;
in the case of the former – that’s a seriously difficult thing to do and usually requires the consent of the person and their council. Its if someone admits – for the sake of turning over power of attorney to family members, or to evade criminal liability or – that their condition makes them incapable of properly defending themself or representing themself.
if that happens to you in a court, its extremely rare and, as stated, is usually voluntary; in the cases of involuntary being declared mentally-defective, it requires testimony from a barrage of psych evaluations which are usually easily rebutted if the person has proper council (and actually wants to avoid that declaration)
My point is basically that its extraordinarily difficult to do
here’s the definition according to Federal regulation 27 C.F.R. § 478.11
the fact that there are exceptions given to allow people to retain their 2nd amendment rights AFTER a court-determination of incompetence/defective is actually pretty remarkable
I think you’re assuming that people who suffer from mental conditions, and admit illness, are by default-having their 2nd amendment rights stripped.
that’s not what this is at all. Its people who declare the “insanity defense” in a trial, or who went through some legal proceeding where they voluntarily had themselves ‘declared unfit’ in order to avoid criminal penalty or in order to have responsibility for their affairs granted to some ward, etc.
this isn’t about people seeking treatment for normal mental illness. iow, simply being mentally ill – and even having that illness recognized in court, isn’t enough. it has to be a specific proceeding where you’re, in most cases, declaring that ‘unfitness’ yourself.
just as an example:
– my brother is schizophrenic and has been in treatment for almost 2 decades. through him i’ve seen a dozen cases of similarly-afflicted people in the NY area and how their various status/conditions changed.
all of these people are “section 8” in terms of social security – basically, ‘permanently disabled’. none have full-time jobs because it would invalidate them in most cases.
from a legal POV, they are all well-known to the state as “100% mentally ill”. they all receive some degree of care from public-mental-health services – some nearly-full-time, occasionally as inpatients, most of the time as outpatients.
Absolutely none of them have ever been declared unfit in a court, and have had no reason to be. In one or two cases, they might have even used their own illness as an excuse in front of a court to avoid criminal penalty – but *not specifically as a ‘declaring by reason of insanity’* defense, which is a very-different and separate legal process.
Meaning, they stated they were crazy to a judge, and had doctors testify proving this, but it was still not an “insanity defense” which is a different thing. I don’t know if that’s clear to everyone.
all of these people COULD in theory buy guns if they wanted. maybe. Its New York, so… the likelihood is that many of them have actually had their families voluntarily put them on lists which would bar them from being able to. My own family did this with my brother. He had to voluntarily sign a form and register.
the main point being, that no one wants their family member to get a gun and kill themselves in some pique of depression/delusion.
my point here is that even in one of the most restrictive states in the nation, with people suffering from one of the most severe and debilitating forms of mental illness, with people who may even have mild criminal/civil records with the courts showing that they have used their condition as an excuse for their behavior…
…they’re still themselves not at all “Declared unfit” by any court, and would retain their second amendment rights.
Happy Glibsversary! I missed that thread a few days ago. (I was at work.) I missed the Cheese Steak thread earlier today. (I was at work.) I think we all can agree that I’m the WORST at posting. Anyway, I like you fuckers. I can’t read/post from work b/c if the IT Dept reported to HR that I was viewing a non-left-leaning website I’d probably be fired. Sucks, but it’s true. Anyway, I said before: I like you fuckers.
Awe, I like you too, fucker!
I too can never post from my DoD contractor workplace. I do lurk though at lunchtime sometimes.
It’s fun when we get a critical mass of night owls involved in a tack on discussion. But it would be nice to interact more with the others.
Now that I might move 2 hours west, I will be even less well-aligned with the time zones!!
Spell after me.

Number.6: Thank you but I don’t know how that shit works. I’m good at about six things: computer/internet things ain’t among them.
Lots of people here would show you how. Pretty straightforward, and unless your IT department are very vigilant (and very unreasonable), nobody will be upset if you limit your use to internet browsing.
Hayek, I work for a non-profit arts institution. No DoD clearance issues, but the day after Trump was elected I went to work and my boss– teary-eyed as she was– asked me if I was, “Okay?” I said I was, “Fine…why?” Then I realized I was expected to be devastated that a corrupt power-hungry lifetime politician lost a presidential election to a self-aggrandizing blowhard. My workplace had “crying rooms” set-up the whole week after. This is the institutional cultural where I work. This is why at work I don’t log-in to any websites more controversial than mlb.com!
I will buy you lunch if you invite me to your office.
Oh, God….me too.
Count me in. Tell your boss I made a big contribution to NPR. It’ll be fun.
Damn, son. You are surrounded by idiots.
I live in Minnesota, full of liberal/leftist/social control crap. I am considering moving to San Diego, and I assumed that SD would be worse.
Turns out, my potential future coworkers are pretty much libertarian/conservative across the board.
I can work with that. 🙂
hayeksplosives, I don’t know. I have some friends in San Diego. Some of them are well-connected in the music scene. As far as I can tell it’s an alright place– with the exception of some drunken, cranky Marines and USN personnel. I like the idea that the weather never changes and you only need one set of clothes for the entire year.
HS I live about an hour outside SD and work there frequently. If I can be of help please let me know.
Like? How about a little ‘love’, you son of a bitch?
Don’t start with me, bro!

Remember TUNDRA: I’ve been here 19 years but I’m not a native Minnesotan! Only rich kids from private schools in Pennsylvania played hockey. In public school in PA if you were white you wrestled and if you were black you played basketball. Some cross-over, but not much. No Ice Hockey in public school districts. Unless the school district was a particularly wealthy one.
That’s awful. I think we should put together a mission trip to Pennsylvania to build hockey rinks and help kids learn the most beautiful sport.
*remembers experiences in PA*
Uh, look at the time! Gotta run!
We had an AHL team just down the road. I used to listen to the games on radio when I was going to sleep as a kid. THE HERSHEY BEARS. The aforementioned rich-kid schools rented their ice. I thought hockey seemed cool when I was a kid. The cost of equipment and ice time would have been prohibitively expensive for my family. I was better off getting a “shop-sponsorship” as a snowboarder in 1993.
HR=Ministry of Truth?
Been seeing ads for a remake of Death Wish all night. A remake, I assume, starring Bruce Willis. Plenty of righteous revenge. Mostly with guns.
Funny, that.
Dang, might have to pay the 8-12 bucks to see that.
I saw part of Thor: Ragnarok as the in-flight movie back from CA last week and now want to finish it too. Fave part was when weary Thor says “Just point me in the direction of whoever’s ass I have to kick.” I might have to make that my next embroidery project.
Sounds like a good tattoo! 😉
Honest to God, I have seriously considering getting the Pam Poovey tattoo on my back.
The Thor one would be less painful and less expensive.
Brevity is your friend.
The Pam Poovey/ Lord Byron one still might happen. If it does, I will provide pics.
For the Angel of Death spread his wings on the blast,
And breathed in the face of the foe as he passed;
And the eyes of the sleepers waxed deadly and chill,
And their hearts but once heaved, and for ever grew still!

I have a long history of a fear of needles. However, if I ever do get a tattoo, its gonna be a big W on either ass-cheek. That way when I bend over it says “WoW”
Upside-down, it will be MOM

Your asshole before and after prison.
Just going to throw this down here.
Seen on Google News “Sears to post rare profit, but that’s only due to tax reform”.
SMH.
SEARS NOT PAYING FAIR SHARE TO GOVT!!!
Profits are used to extend oppression. I like this closed system they’ve developed.
It might also have something to do with radically downsizing, and one assumes losing a lot of unprofitable store space.
The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles.

The state must declare the child to be the most precious treasure of the people. As long as the government is perceived as working for the benefit of the children, the people will happily endure almost any curtailment of liberty and almost any deprivation.
Quoted from Mein kamph. Not to Godwin a thread so early, but literally the words of Hitler.
Since you quoted the bastard I think you haven’t broken Godwin’s Law. Also, this latecyou get a pass even if you did.
Civil Wars happen when the victimized are armed. Genocide happens when they are not.
Lachowsky: You’re a swell. My favorite thing about this site is that it is peopled by those who are thoughtful enough to see political power for what it is: A means for the power-mad and incompetent to stomp on the commonweal. I’m gonna take a shot of bourbon and go to sleep. So it goes.
Excellent. Is that from you or someone else?
