Hello again Glibsters. Its yer old buddy, Brett. I’m tired and don’t want to be here today. How the hell are each of you? Also, you guys gotta start doing some work during the day. All my links are stale by the time they go up.
I’ve been waiting all day to post this. In which the Chronicle of Higher Education lashes out at those who think educators can be quantified by metrics. My favorite sentence: “Like most professionals, academics resent the imposition of goals that may conflict with their professional ethos and judgment, thus lowering morale.” In IT work, that’s pretty much every day I come to work.
Caviezel and Gibson plan sequel to The Passion of Christ. Look, I know movie adaptations of books sometimes don’t follow the Canon. But I’v read the rest of the book TPoC was based on. Caviezel isn’t getting a whole lot more screen time.
Google may still tell themselves “Don’t Be Evil”, but they should also tell themselves “Don’t Help Evil”.
I’m sad that the headline doesn’t match the url — “Knitting Nazis” is a great alliterative headline.
Mr. Lizard, it looks like a couple of deliveries from home went a bit off the mark.
Stumbled across this looking for something new for y’all. I like the sentiment.
Sperm competition fact of the day: It’s been well established that ejaculate volume, sperm count and sperm quality are all negatively correlated with time spent away from one’s partner. This is due to physiologic adaptation to the possibility of female infidelity. New information on this field has proven that all said ejaculatory parameters also increase when a man has evidence of infidelity as simulated with pornography. IOW, if a guy watches a porn with one woman and two men, he will have higher quality ejaculate compared to when he watches a porn with one man and two women. This could physiologically explain the paraphilia of Candaulism.

7, 8, 11, 14, 25, 27, 33, 36.
Make that *positively correlated*. Sloppy sloppy!
I was too late for Morning Lynx, so I couldn’t praise your redhead selections. Take all the kudos for that.
#14 looks like a bunny boiler. She also looks like Liv Tyler with glasses. Self-preservation is not an absolute virtue!
Wait…wut?!
*runs off to am links*
Sick. Just a sinus infection. Fun.
At lunch, this jumped into my cart. And then I forgot to buy lunch.
Volcanically entombed?
Gasp! I’ve never tried it, but I have friends that go ape shit over it. Once we were on vacation in Denver with them, and we called a bar to see if they had it. They did, a keg of it. We waited about an hour, drove to the bar, and the keg was out by the time we got there.
They get a shipment on Wednesdays at lunch. It’s gone by 1 o’clock.
RUSSIANS! i KNEW IT!
“Like most professionals, academics resent the imposition of goals that may conflict with their professional ethos and judgment, thus lowering morale.”
“You suck.”
“That’s just… like… your opinion, Man.”
*throws coffee mug*
Since I didn’t realize I fucked up the link in the last thread:
Virginia proposes porn-watching tax “to combat human trafficking”
Top 3 issues here:
1. Blatant first amendment violation
2. VPNs exist
3. You’re just gonna block PornHub and pretend you’ve done something, aren’t you.
HOW DID I FUCK UP THE LINK AGAIN? *autistic screeching, hitting self in head*
http://www.wwltv.com/news/local/virginia-proposes-porn-watching-fee-to-prevent-human-trafficking/512767245
Where is this magic technology going to come from?
Britain.
Ireland does it too. I was annoyed that Grindr didn’t work over cell networks, but did on wifi.
I’m sure they think they can just block them provider-side, i.e. force Verizon/Comcast/whatever internet they have in Virginia to block sites unless they collect a tax.
Or maybe they’ll stuff something in the internet tubes so porn can’t get through.
Doesn’t sound very neutral to me.
LOL!
Which won’t work because VPNs are cheap and easy to use.
Need example of what is being taxed. I’m assuming Q’s pics are not included in this tax?
Even the Nazgul punted on that question. “We can’t define it but we know it when we see it.” Lulz.
The old “you know it when you see it”. Sounds like my Catholic school sex ed class.
Or clicking on an HM link.
Catholic school sex ed
“So, once the foreplay has been completed, and just before the main event, scream Deus Vult at the top of your voice”?
Yeah, whatever. The state is getting into the porn business and want their cut.
They’re selfless public servants, not a bunch of nerds. They’ve got people in Microsoft that can make it happen, one phone call away.
“making pornography less accessible on the internet it will reduce the amount of human trafficking”
How is that supposed to work?
It’s the latest bullshit justification by the Neo-Puritans for policing pleasure.
Yeah, umm, ok, because every person who enjoys looking at the human form of their choice is a human trafficker.
First of all, how the hell do you enforce this? 2nd, how do the lawmakers who vote for this, get around it to get their pr0n? These people need to die in a fucking fire. This isn’t fucking North Korea, you morons.
There must be some group pushing this in every state. It was tried in NoDak and thankfully -and somewhat surprisingly- it was nearly unanimously ridiculed. Our version would have labeled every device that connected to the internet as a “pornography machine” or some such bullshit. That included “smart” appliances. I don’t believe it even made it to a floor vote.
I’m guessing it’s a coalition between fourth-wave feminists and evangelicals. Two idiot tastes that idiot great together.
That included “smart” appliances.
“This toaster is known to the state of North Dakota as a pornography machine.”
Sounds like the proposers of said regulation were into Rule 34. Bigly.
“Knitting Nazis”
Good band name

The ‘Reason Pitch Bot’ is mocking this article. It probably would have been better if it included a denunciation of current FBI surveillance practices, but it’s not that terrible. I mean it’s Sullum. He was pimping Russia fever dreams right after the election, so this is a marked improvement.
I seldom am even reading Reason anymore, but randomly skimming it just seems to be yet more entries in the already heavily oversaturated TDS marketplace. Trump’s turned Reason Magazine into something, that’s for sure.
Also, I note that they’re trying to get more interns to pad their resumes before jumping to a respectable mainstream publication like WaPo or the NYT. Heh, published writing samples. One of those things that might seem like a reasonable request, but what a filter that serves as at the moment…
Do you find anything wrong with this article? It doesn’t seem bad to me.
Anxious for the Super Bowl, tired, pissed off that I have to be in Miami the next two mornings at 7:30 for a conference, and slowly being driven insane over my sister’s divorce.
I believe it was a rhetorical question
I choose to look at it as a friendly question, rather than a greeting.
Also, fuck you.
Sorry, it was an easy opening for snark. I hope things look-up. Tomorrow is a new day
Just snarking back.
Sorry. Mostly in a bad mood because I had another job interview recently that I felt good about, but didn’t get the job. I’m secure in my job right now, so it’s not like I’ll be out on the street or anything, but I’m miserable, and it’s starting to feel like I’ll never get away.
Would Eagles 27, Patriots 17 improve your mood?
Are you helping out the lawyer on that? Or just there for moral support?
I’m there to be a go-between for my parents who have been divorced for 15 years and still can’t be in the same room together.
And for moral support for my sister.
That sounds extremely shitty, good luck.
What’s happening with your sister?
AND NO I’M NOT ASKING FOR HER PHONE NUMBER
She’s divorcing her abusive asshole of a husband, finally. Knew he was an asshole the day I met him.
I’m giving 5:1 odds he does something to get himself arrested at the trial. Most likely trying to bring a gun into the courthouse, which would be hilarious. Wonder what the penalty is for that in Maryland (especially without him having a license in MD).
Probably quite severe, since it’s MD.
Christ, what an asshole.
Wonder what the penalty is for that in Maryland
Too bad it isn’t FL. That’s a 10 year minimum.
Wait… you can own a gun in Maryland?
He has a concealed permit in FL, never got one in MD. He gave up his guns (allegedly) when my sister got a restraining order against him last year, but not sure if he’s gotten them back. He probably went to a gun show to buy a new one because there are no background checks there (I say I say, these are the jokes, people).
Well, to start with, there’s a firearm roster, like CA. No reciprocity either. Gun has to be registered in the state in addition to you having, like, y’know, an MD permit.
And if he brings it into a courthouse? Yikes.
I’M NOT ASKING FOR HER PHONE NUMBER
But a photo or two couldn’t hurt?
I have not seen my sister in 9 years. She broke off contact after I had a mongrel half Jewish child, which offends her orthodox Jewish sensibilities.
(fun fact: When I got married, she was dating a Catholic dude. She didn’t get serious about religion until she decided to marry this asshole)
I remember you posting about this before. That really sucks man. Here’s hoping that losing this fucking asshole will be the first step towards your relationship with her being repaired.
I hope she didn’t have kids with the asshole.
Two.
One of them turned 10 last year, and a total doppelganger of his father. He also (with his father’s encouragement) blatantly goes against my sister’s authority, blames her for everything going on, and is generally a brat. He also has psychological issues (though one of them is ODD, which is sometimes called “asshole parent syndrome”). He’s in a $35k a year private school, which my sister can’t afford.
The other one is 5, and is much more like his mom, and hasn’t let his dad more or less brainwash him.
My answer to that question is growing impatient with my wife to pop.
Ya she’s still technically due in 2 weeks, but she’s growing ever more irritable by the day.
Oh, buddy. Yeah. They’re pretty grumpy about then. Good luck!
Jesus 2: The Electric Boogaloo
I saw the Passion of the Christ when I was in college at the theater (I had nothing else to do on that particular Tuesday). I was the only guy eating popcorn (I hadn’t eaten dinner) and the woman next to me was already crying before the movie even started. She told me “I brought a box of kleenex if you need them”. “No thanks” I said “I read the book first. I know what’s going to happen.”
I do like how the first movie left it open to a sequel. He rose from the dead! Who saw that coming
lol
That movie was amazing in how different people’s responses were to it. I remember that my parents were complaining about the violence, how the flogging scene went on and on “endlessly”. I pointed out that they were counting off each stroke, so you knew exactly how many times he was hit, and they claimed to not have noticed that there was counting going on.
Honestly, the only anti-semitism in that movie was what the viewer brought in with them. The movie made use of two different tropes: the Romans were portrayed as “the commoners are vulgar, the nobles are… noble” The Jews were aligned to the more modern “the elites are evil and corrupt, the commoners are honest and kind.” By comparing the Sanhedrin to the Roman rulers, the Sanhedrin come off as the bad guys, but they also come off as bad guys compared to the commoners. But the Roman soldiers also come off as tremendous dicks compared to the judenproletariat.
Did you do the “hole in the popcorn bucket” trick and offer her some?
It will all be at the beginning. A couple of bawling out the disciples bits and *poof* he gone.
The Jews killed Jesus 2.
I’m thinking more of something like Weekend at Bernie’s where a few apostles head in early Sunday to move him and get him out of the city before anyone else opens the tomb.
I’m going to be laughing at that for a week.
There are 4 gospel accounts of the Passion. I see room for 3 sequels, each bloodier than the last.
Well it could be a prequel that Kevin Costner turned down.
“Sits With Whores And Tax Collectors”
As far as Indian names go, I think that beats Kicking Bird.
this is why i should read comments from the top rather than the bottom
(*will probably still read them bottom up)
(**expecting this will result in jokes about “so you’re a bottom, then”)

She *is* an STD; sexually transmitted to us by her parents.
Sartorially Transmitted Disease?

The Peruvian Air Force is still around? I thought they all crashed into the side of a mountain.
The ones that survived only did because they had to make the IMPOSSIBLE CHOICE.
At least they ended up (looks at camera) “Alive”
That was the BOLIVIAN Air Force, friendo!
There’s a difference?
Peruvians mid or feed, Bolivians jungle for 45 minutes then call you a fag.
This guy get is.
That was the Bolivian Air Force, and not all of it. They also had some WWII surplus cargo planes and the Air Force’s sole job was to fly beef in from Argentina. That was their only source of beef. On one of those trips the plane lost power over La Paz and in order to make it to the landing strip the ‘Airmen’ started tossing sides of beef out of the plane over the city.
La Paz? I thought it was Macho Grande.
As god as my witness, I thought beef could fly.
Pics
Flying beef.
I was hoping one of y’all would ask if they made the landing strip.
It’s Bolivia. Of course they didn’t.
Would have made the landing strip if it was Brazilian.
I will renew my request for a site or a film clip of those jets owing into the mountain, Suthen. thanks.
I’m betting that story was concocted by one of Bolivia’s South American rivals. They’ve lost like half their territory to their neighbors over their history, so I imagine there’s some mutual hostility leading to the generation of tall tales.
My invitation to the blood soaked orgy of evil must have gotten lost in the mail.

I was going to post something similar, but fuck those assholes who cut up a Shetland pony.
Lawmakers who proposed the bill said that by making pornography less accessible on the internet it will reduce the amount of human trafficking.
Also, by banning science fiction movies, we can reduce the risk of an alien invasion.
Things like this always raise the question to me:. Who’s dumber legislators or chiefs of police?
The idiots or the idiots that believe them?
The people that buy their bullshit. They are in it for the money, they dont give a shit about human trafficking.
It’s a symbiotic relationship; judging them separately is missing the point.
The people that keep voting them in?

Honestly, that doesn’t seem that much different than sausage to me.
That’s what’s on the floor, soaked into the sawdust, after you’re done making sausage. Looks like someone was a chain-smoker, too.
Haggis is a type of savory pudding which is literally (or etymologically if you prefer) sausage. It’s just meat, filling and seasonings in a casing.
Delicious is what it is.
That is….horrific.

I hate to link to that other place, but this is so awful it merits it. Not content with fucking over people who have head colds by restricting purchases of cold medicine, now they want to fuck over people with stomach issues by restricting purchases of products like Imodium
Apparently the SB falls on Jerome Brown’s birthday this year?
And it would’ve been his 52nd birthday.
Well, it’s settled.
The Ghost of Jerome Brown will be the difference!
I wonder if you managed to get a few hundred or thousand people people with IBS and other gut wrenching problems to have a ‘shit-in’ at FDA headquarters if that would convince them to change their mind.
The FDA was created to stop imbecilic patent medicines. Now the FDA stops medicine because they’re patent imbeciles.
New state law here now prohibits cough syrup to be sold to minors. Because some idiots are chugging it. Sucks to be a teenager with a cold.

This was an entirely foreseeable consequence. Yo, fuck the ADA.
Personally, I am on team Pusher Robot.
The reason I hate assholes who abuse the ‘support animals’ is that, when the backlash comes and it’s on the way, it’s the people with genuine problems who are gonna get fucked.
It’s kinda like people who abuse disability drive me mad, because I know people who most need disability welfare (SLD and all that) are the people least capable of jumping through hoops (pun intended) of whatever anti-abuse regulation is crafted.
Indeed. Having seen up close how the disability process works, it’s totally geared towards malingerers & hypochondriacs that go to the doc and establish a very long paper trail.
^^This
One of my wife’s clients is Kaiser. They go after workers comp and disability fraud to the extent that the law will allow. Some of the cases she’s had are absolutely shocking.
There are several lower level government employees that, over a period of a decade or 3, have never worked more than 6 continuous weeks without “getting injured” on the job. Once the primary care doc catches on and doesn’t give them the paperwork they need, they start going to the ER. Once the ER catches on, they take an ambulance to a different hospital that’s not tied into Kaiser’s EMR system.
Some of these files are tens of thousands of pages long.
The only way to fire these people is to get a conviction, so it’s very satisfying when that happens.

ACLU trying to win back that Lefty street cred.
“Let’s ignore that whole part of the speech where he talking about a military build-up and keeping Gitmo open. But, did you see how often he used the word ‘American’. So disgusting.”
Only the slightest of exaggerations
Some might say the classiest exaggeration of all time
Are they changing their name then?
They should just change their name to CLU then if “American” is triggering.
They were totes cool with Obama saying “I” in every fucking sentence though.
He was saying aye!
It was Hispanic outreach, you shitlord.
I was looking at some stuff on my phone, and I came cross a thing from Vox dated in early December; it was some female “labor lawyer” ruminating about Pence’s *probably illegal* rule regarding interactions with women.
That’s right, she was tying to portray it as unlawfully discriminatory, because grrrl powerz.

“Why Japanese Schoolgirls Are Making Swastika’s Great Again”

Making swastika’s what great again?
You know who else appropriated Hindu symbols?
Hippies?
The vikings (circa 650 AD)
Finnish Air Force pre-45?
Tata Motors Ltd. ?
I’ve been known to appropriate this one whenever possible?
Ravi Shankar?
The 45th Infantry?
I think that we all could have predicted that it would take the schoolgirls to MJGA.
I love the comment “you cannot appropriate symbols of hate and make them look cute. You don’t fight serial killers by legalizing murder.”
Someone hasnt heard of capital punishment, I reckon.
In fact, swastika’s or as their called
This article has some impressive mangled English.
“In which the Chronicle of Higher Education lashes out at those who think educators can be quantified by metrics.”
Well, most metrics are made up bullshit that don’t really measure much of anything. However, in the case of education (higher or lower) the #1 problem with the metrics – like teacher evaluations for example – is that they are asking everyone EXCEPT the people footing the bill.
Incredible imperfect infrastructure initiative
The Trump plan, while big on numbers, was small on details and left most who listened, including those in the audience, perplexed and perturbed. The Trump plan heralded a $1.5 trillion investment, with only $200 billion coming directly from the federal government and at least $800 billion being leveraged to incentivize local and state governments and private companies to front the bill.
This will ultimately mean tax breaks for companies who decide to build infrastructure that they will very likely own and operate. This will also most likely mean that those investments will be coupled with user-costs such as tolls that will exist for long periods of time and at prices that will undoubtedly increase as cities continue to face ballooning debts, decreased revenues, declining credit ratings and high unfunded pension liabilities like in Chicago, Cincinnati and Las Vegas.
—————–
The Trump plan is at best smoke and mirrors. There can be a legtimate and cogent debate on how public works projects should be managed, financed and triaged. There is some worth in talking about taxes and user fees and how they should be structured, but what is painfully obvious is that without a fully funded infrastructure plan that not only builds a better America but builds a safer one, we will continue to lag behind our counterparts in the developed world, the Trump plan does not adequately or seriously address that issue.
Not good enough. Print more money. Roadz should be free.
When I hear the word “infrastructure”, I reach for my Browning.
Except I live in Canada, so no guns. Figure out yourself what my substitute is.

What John Stossel is to the lot of you, Brendan O’Neil is to me, even though we’d probably fight more than agree. Over on Spectator, he’s now standing up for fine British tradition of working-class totty.
Feminists have a new target: working-class women (link to Google cache, because Speccie decided to be assholes about access)
I like O’Neill as much as I like Stossel. But, Stossel is still better than O’Neill, because he’s good on economics too.
I still believe that Stossel is the only guy that both yokels and cosmos can agree upon. He should be the next Libertarian Party chairman
If LP had brains, Mike Rowe/Stossel would be the next ticket.
Of course, the two man mentioned have lots of brains and thus will never accept.
Also, Stossel is better on economics, but he looks kinda like my dad, so there’s no crush factor. Whereas Brendan has that delicious diddly-diddly-patatohs accent.
When everything is rape, everything is human trafficking.
O’neill is easily my favorite columnist of the last few years.
he’s everything people @ Reason should be but arent’.
A Marxist?
I mean, I love the guy, but he still thinks he can make anarcho-communism a thing (far as I know)
i know he’s a marxist. but he almost never even brings it up other than to moan that the left no longer seems to care about “class” and instead is obsessed w/ identity.
given how shitty advocates like Soave are for “libertarian” ideas, he might as well be a communist.
I heard him try to explain the “Marxist Libertarian” label on the Rubin Report. In essence, it just means he agrees with some things Marx wrote, and he likes how it confuses people, but I don’t think he’s on board with the socialist utopia. Or maybe he did, but has gradually shifted away.
He’s one of those types who complain that the Left historically was anti-establishment and whatnot, but ever since they’ve abandoned any attachment to individual liberty they “gave” it to the Right.
They really are children.
They’re gonna run out of targets.

Visiting Star Slate Codex for some reason, I ran into a really cool link
Legal Systems Very Different From Ours
Written by an anaracho-capitalist, investigating whether our understanding of necessities of a legal system (written code of law, judges who arbitrate, officers who enforce) is correct. I only read the chapter on Athens but it’s really cool. My favorite part:
Sounds like California.
The US Olympic athletes are funded by private and corporate donations, so we already do that voluntarily. No need to violate the NAP.
Far as I know, rich people could and did volunteer to sponsor teams, captain ships, sponsor plays etc. It brought status and honor, both very important consideration at the time. But sometimes you gotta squeeze.
I think winning the Olympics was considered basically as close as you can get to actual immortality.
If you want some really interesting libertarian type law, check out traditional Xeer law.
That darn Trump
Spending for the Energy Department’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy is set at a $2.04 billion level for the current fiscal year, which ends Oct. 1. Last year the administration asked for just $636.1 million, a decline of over two-thirds, though Congress did not implement the request. For 2019, the administration’s draft proposal would lower that request even further to $575.5 million.
The document also suggests substantial staff cuts, down from 680 in the enacted 2017 budget to 450 in 2019.
Trump is going to make “renewable” energy illegal.
Putin hates renewable energy. It is known.
So I’m going to ask a question that sounds like a total humbledadbrag but really isn’t.
My daughter’s in a pretty excellent charter school, in 3rd grade. She’s been on honor roll since they started giving them grades, and has a grand total of one “B” so far in any grading period (an 89 in social studies once). Where she really excels is in reading. The reading assessment they just did put her at the 99th percentile for a child in the middle of 3rd grade — which is the equivalent reading level is that of an average 10th grader in the 3rd month of school. Specifically, the assessment said that “the child would best be served by instructional materials prepared at a 10th grade level”.
What do I do with this? Can’t afford private school, and I’m not sure moving her to one would make a difference anyways. She loves to read, but anything I give her that she’ll be interested in (she’s interested in typical things an 8 year old girl is, like princesses and ponies and rainbows) reading is far too “easy”, and she’s not going to be interested in books written for high school kids, obviously. I’m worried she’s going to get to that smart kid point where she drops off because everything is too easy/goes too slow for her. Going to have a conversation with her teacher, but what to do other than that? Any book recommendations?
I’m glad I was average (except in math). My parents didn’t have to deal with this.
(and no homeschool recommendations. I know, I know, but it’s not happening.)
Narnia? It can lure her in with stuff she likes but has weightier themes. You’ll just have to punt on the whole “lion-Jesus” thing.
Hobbit would definitely work, I wasn’t much older the first time I read it. Unless she says “saw the movie, boring”. In which case, your job as a father is to hunt down Peter Jackson like an animal.
If she were a boy, I’d say ‘feed her old-timey adventure stories, like greek myths, Robin Hood, Verne or Dumas (vetting for content, obviously)’ but I’m not sure a girl would be interested in it. And Jane Austen is probably too dull, even before you have to answer “so what did Mr Wickham and Lydia do”…
second the narnia series, as well as the piers anthony Xanth stuff
I don’t think Xanth is appropriate for that age; is been a while but I seem to remember some raunch.
There’s some implied fornication but if I recall it’s all puns and word play. It’s no Bio of A Space Tyrant,(which is awesome) now that there was some fucked up shit, freaking at the freaker’s ball kinda stuff, my unsullied teenage head could hardly contain it. Hey, I think I finally get metaphor!!
One whole book was basically STEVE SMITH in space!
I am not a parent, but i am one of those kids who was reading way way ahead of age-group and was offered to skip grades (i didn’t)
don’t do anything. encourage her to read, and give her stuff at random you think might be interesting. you’d be surprised the stuff kids can understand and get very interested in at young ago. i was a huge fan of the Encyclopedia Brittanica “great books” series which had a special sub-series for kids (e.g. original versions of king arthur, 1001 nights, treasure island, gullivers travels, pinnochio, robin hood, etc)
secondly, kids – especially before age 10 – develop inconsistently. Just because they’re way way ahead of the curve at age X, doesn’t mean they stay that way forever, and its normal for them to have ‘spurts’. Don’t assume they’re a genius and then ‘falling short of their potential’ if they later get bored or less interested in reading.
but i think the best thing is to just encourage a kid to pursue reading all sorts of stuff as a form of self-education. that lasts a lifetime and teaches kids how to learn without guidance.
Well. So…this is me.
What *I* did was wander the adult stacks at the library and check out anything and everything that looked interesting. Some of my greatest finds have been because I was simply wandering down the aisles looking at spines and covers and reading the summary.
I’d say, go to the library and stay there for a few hours and see what happens.
Can’t help with rainbows, but there are probably some more advanced reading materials on horses and princesses. I assume she knows how to use the card catalog at a library, go with her and see if you can find some books geared toward 7th/8th/9th graders that appeal to her. Do not underestimate her – she might very well be interested in stuff written for high school kids as long as they aren’t technical manuals and stuff like that. At least find out if she’s interested in non-fiction or just more advanced fiction.
Also, get her a copy of Freakonomics.
“card catalogue” hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
What is this, the twentieth century?
That got a chuckle out of me too.
Crank up the difficulty by going back in time. Brothers Grimm, Aesop, Greek folk tales, stories that would’ve been common and folksy, but are often translated for academics. Plenty of princesses, ponies, talking animals, etc.
Aesop
Oh damn, that reminded me – one my favorite books as a kid was a copy of La Fontaine’s Fables. It’s essentially retellings of Aesop, and the book I had was gloriously illustrated (you can see the style on the cover in the link), with all animals dressed as 17th Century French according to the status.
Excellent. I picked up a back-to-the-Greek academic translation a few years ago and was delighted by some of the ones that weren’t considered good morals for kids when they were getting translated:
Someone needs to have Norm Macdonald or David Chappele do that as a bit and watch the reaction!
If you could get her some sort of music lessons that would be great. Music helps form those brain connections that help with everything else.
Our son devoured the Narnia books (multiple times) in the 3rd grade. He grew up into an atheist anyway as well as a libertarian.
At the same time he went through all the Doc Savage books – *may* not apply to girl.
The stuff he was given by the school to read was pathetic.
Hobbit would be great.
My son is in a similar situation in the 4th grade.
I have to actively discourage him from reading and push him to focus on other skills. It’s great to excel at something, and he will, no matter what I do. I just don’t want it to come at the expense of something else down the road.
The way I see it, my job is to raise a well rounded, happy child that will function well as an adult. That means no pushing the super-genius thing, because it’s usually a recipe for crazy and a lifetime of unhappiness.
Indeed. As RAH said “Specialization is for insects.”
What Mojeaux said. We just took the kid to the library a lot and let him find stuff.
Take a small room or large closet in your house and create a comfy reading nook – nice chair, pleasing posters, soft classical music.- lock her in there with Gravity’s Rainbow everyday after school til she finishes, then give her Moby Dick or Foucault’s Pendulum. It’s the only way to nip this reading thing in the bud. She’ll thank you for it later when she’s a well adjusted soccer mom slowly killing her husband with passive aggression, and not some four-eyed bookworm selling blood for a fix of Danielle Steele or Stuart Woods.
Hey, what’s wrong with Moby Dick? I mean, I preferred Billy Budd, but still…
There was not nearly as much sodomy as I was led to believe.
It’s strongly implied.
I never did get innuendo, IYKWIMAITYD.
Oh God, that gets
worsebetterNow you’ve gone and made it overt, Pan.
I listened to the unabridged book on tape while I was going cross-country and had to rewind it a few times going “wait, what the fuck?”
I wonder if he put it in there to check who’s paying attention and reading all the way through…
I doubt it. There’s an awful lot of Queequeg and Ishmael just hanging out in bed together naked, smoking, and spooning.
If ruining reading is the goal, I’d recommend “The Fountainhead” but that’s probably child abuse.
Ever think about horseback riding lessons? Might be a good way to find out just how much she’s interested in ponies – some kids go to the stable and see all the work involved and their interest wanes, but a few become even more fascinated.
Or…. take her to an authentic Italian place and order sfilacci. If she eats it, the dream is over.
Slovenians have horse burgers
I think you’re right to be concerned about boredom/ease causing issues. I was in the same boat (reading at a high school level in elementary school), and I really struggled through middle school. Why? Because I didn’t develop the skills in elementary school necessary to actually sit down and do work. I had my homework finished before I got home in elementary school, so I didn’t even know how to do real homework when it came up.
Here are some recommendations based on my experience:
1) Make clear to her the difference between school and learning. Even though it’s a bunch of work for both you and her, find an educational project that you can do in your spare time. Let her choose a topic and spend a month doing various things to learn about that topic. Have her read a non-fiction book and write an essay about what she learned. Have her write a fiction story that includes that topic. Set up a few math problems relating to that topic that are difficult for her. Do a science experiment about that project. It doesn’t have to be all consuming, but maybe an hour 2-3x a week. It should be less boring/tedious than her schoolwork, but should still require solid effort on her part. You want to develop that discipline required to complete a non-trivial task and you want to stoke her love of learning. The school will let her discipline atrophy and snuff out her love of learning.
2) Usually kids with that level of intelligence/aptitude have trouble interacting with kids their own age. Their brain simply thinks more complex thoughts than most of their peers, which makes it hard to socialize sometimes. I had an easier time interacting with kids who were younger or older than me when I was her age. Perhaps there are opportunities for that sort of cross-age interaction?
3) I don’t remember what I read at that age, but there are plenty of books to read. She has probably outgrown Boxcar Children, but may find Nancy Drew more her speed. I’d worry less about nailing a 10th grade reading level and try to find books about her interests. If she likes horses, Black Beauty may be a good one at her age. Little Women is probably a bit beyond her attention span, but there may be an abridged version that would hold her interest. What sorts of stuff does she like? I may have a few more recommendations based on her interests.
(as you can tell from my 3rd point, my reading comprehension has gotten a bit rusty)
Princesses ponies and rainbows… let me see if I can get a list together.
-There may be an abridged version of To Kill a Mockingbird that goes heavy on Scout and light on the rape and racism parts.
-The Black Stallion series
-Black Beauty
-Nancy Drew
-If Nancy Drew is a bit too much of a jump in difficulty, there is a mystery series called pony-crazed princess that may be a bit easier to start with.
I would recommend the Sally Lockhart books by Phillip Pullman. They are kinda dark by today’s standards but they are about a girl in the Victorian era. I read them when I was 11. And there is the wrinkle in time books which get very religious and then on the other side is the his dark materials books that get very atheists.
I also reads lots of Michael Crichton when I was about 11 because of Jurassic Park. not all of it was super appropriate but reading State of Fear and Disclosure really kinda opened me up toward questioning many of the taken for granted aspects of culture. I don’t think I would recommend Crichton to your daughter but if there are any films she likes based on books that can be a good starting point.
What about Andre Norton? She’s got lots of space Opera, but I’d think your daughter might like the Witch World books. I’d really check those out and see if she likes them.
The Annotated Alice. That might also have the effect of having her want to explore more BritLit, but either way, it’s remarkably thought-provoking.
SP was a Dickens freak at that age.
I got hooked on The Railway Children around that age which led to a BritLit preference through the rest of high school.
SP (who was also something of a prodigy) also strongly suggests having her try writing. She also recommends anything by Rick Riordan that is meant for tweens and teens (e.g., Percy Jackson).
If she is InfoWorld, how about the Misty of Chincoteague series? I loved them at about her age and are about the wild horses on Chincoteague island.
Into horses. Fucking autocorrect.
Is she already in a smartypants track? That’s where I was from 4th grade on.
I would just help her find stories she likes. I loved The Three Investigators and Danny Dunn. Don’t worry so much about reading level, just something interesting. Maybe look for some nonfiction about real princesses _ Amy Kelly’s “Eleanor of Acquitaine” reads like an adventure novel even though it is history. She was married to the King of France, got an annulment, married Henry Plantagenet, was the mother of Richard the Lionheart and Prince John of Robin Hood fame. If I could meet anyone from history, it would be her, but I would be totally intimidated.
The best footnote from that book explains that she usually signed letters as “Eleanor, by the grace of God, Queen of England” , but when writing the pope about Richard being held captive, she signed as “Eleanor, by the wrath of God, Queen of England”.
The book title is Eleanor of Acqitaine and the Four Kings.
Danny Dunn series has lots science and problem solving, so even if the writing isn’t at 10th grade level, it gets you thinking.
Oh god yes. Those were awesome. Trixie Belden too….
…Shut up.
YES! I never like Nancy Drew, but I loved Trixie Belden.
Yup, I didn’t like that or Hardy Boys either. I’m sure there’s a reason that’s escaping me 40 years later.
I kindled one of the Trixies I remembered most for the hell of it – the one where her and her pals vacation in New Mexico or something. It’s really dated. And probably borderline problematic by the standards of today’s lunatics.
Ooh, for horsey novels, try Dick Francis.
Gilmored
Dick Francis occasionally has adult themes, IIRC.
Like Mojeaux, I was just turned loose in the library. My parents didn’t restrict my reading T all. I read the Exorcist in 4th grade and had nightmares. My mom just told me I should use better judgement. (I was their last child and a change of life baby – they were tired). My brother and sister still complain about how much I got away with.
Problematic, and? One of my college English professors wrote some of the Trixie Belden books.
Ha, cool. I think there were some Indians or Mexicans that weren’t duly respected or some such nonsense.
I’m a huge fan of the Artemis Fowl series. It’s Die Hard/James Bond stories, with the protagonist an 11 year old criminal mastermind, written for middle-schoolers.
Complex heist plots, laser beams, pixies, ninja assassins, bodyguards with SIG 226’s and knuckledusters. Body count is negligible and not blood soaked.
Getting travel anxiety. Forecast is calling for light snow just about every day I’m at Copper. If any of y’all want to come up for some apres ski, let me know. We’ll need to stick to Copper (maybe Frisco, but we’re exceedingly lazy) since we won’t have transpo other than the Summit County bus.
Anxiety because you might not get there on time?
White out conditions is my guess, snowing is fine but i like to see the trees myself…
I’m just a nervous traveller in general
Hmm… Driving back down the mountains after drinking at high altitude… What time?
Copper rules. It was the last place I skied before moving from CO.
Schiff is getting testy about the memo
Dems have been using the “obscure rule” phrasing a lot these past couple of weeks. Putting the government on trial is a bad thing apparently.
The best part about that strategy is that the government is reliably criminal.

This is breakup talk!
“EXPERTS are baffled after large steel balls appeared to fall from the sky, terrifying thousands living in nearby neighbourhoods.”
Small kinetic bombardment cannon testing. It was supposed to be over one of your oceans. But day shift missed the Atlantic window and it was getting close to shift change, and night shift already had fusion bottle containment system interlock checks and they were bitching like little baby raptors. Anyways day shift did their test before the ship crossed over the pacific like really really before.
And now my boss is going to have to ‘politely’ *shudders* ask The Hair to get his mammal handler to tweet something about a Muellers mother.
Reptile’n aint easy.
so what is the Terminal Velocity or large steel balls dropped from Orbit? say 150 miles up?
Depends on the altitude.
notice the 150 mile part? So, allowing for the changing density of the air, that’s my question
That’s your initial “drop” point.
At what altitude do you want to know the terminal velocity.
The lower you go, the slower it gets.
I’m thinking Flying Crowbar, would TV be enough for destruction? or should they be Thrown/shot at the Planet?
Cute story- some years ago I was working with a Colorado company, and we were doing a sampling project in the west part of the state, near Grand Junction. We use barometric pressure as one of the parameters to calculate sample rates, flows, etc. since everything gets corrected back to Standard Pressure and Temp. At any rate, a very hungover Tres (who arrived the night before) shows up for work, looks at the barometer, rubs his eyes, looks at it again. It was really low. I asked one of my colleagues, “you need to fix this thing. Its busted. Stuck on like 24.91 ” Hg. The guy looked at me like I was a complete moron (guilty), and not a professional with a decade and a half of experience. He said, “thats sounds right. You know our elevation is around a mile, right?”
Me: “Oh. Right.”
The guy then went on to describe how, on a recent trip to NE Ohio, he was golfing and neglected to “altitude correct” his drive. Everything he hit was, according to him, falling about 10 yards short, since he was used to the Denver courses.

Im not enacting the labor for you…..fuck off!
(hi, Yusef!)
Well we use the equivalent of carbon steel for testing because they burn up before entry. For actual bombardment we fire a 2.25% chromoly alloy. The higher melting temp holds it together prior to impact.
This particular weapons system is kinda stupid, and mainly used for limited anti-personnel. And a small scale at that. But we gotta keep up the PMs on it or Intergalactic Engineering council inspection committee (ECIC) will fine us.
Try the Inconel, or Hastalloy. Both have really high nickel, and heat tolerance.
Not cost effective, if you’re bombarding on a budget.
Did you guys study Footfall by Niven and Pournelle? Crowbars and rock Baby!

Quebec Separatists circa 1970’s and 80’s – Let’s drive all of the productive economy out of Quebec!
Justin Trudeau – Here, hold my beer!
The Senate of Canada is back in session this week, ready to vote on Bill C-25. That’s the legislation introduced by Innovation Minister Navdeep Bains to revamp the Canada Business Corporations Act and inject more social subversion into corporate governance ….. Another tackles the trending topic of diversity in management, on boards and throughout the corporate system.
At the Davos event, where U.S. President Trump sold America as a low-tax nation open for investment, Trudeau offered a down-with-corporations speech dedicated to genderism, diversity and intersectionality. “We have to recognize that aspects of intersectionality are always at play and require special attention,” he said. “Here’s an example: In 2016, among women who were newly appointed to the boards of Fortune 500 companies, 77 per cent of them were white. Race, religion, sexuality, socioeconomic status — these are just a few of the ways that women are even further discriminated against.”
New gender and diversity rules are constantly being invented. A recent op-ed co-written by Dominic Barton suggested corporate procurement departments should expand programs that “aim to purchase from women — and minority-owned businesses.” Trudeau in Davos had more ideas. When companies are looking for a new hire they “should be identifying women candidates at a rate equal to men.” When corporations and governments need to fill appointments, said Trudeau, they should “recruit people who reflect the true diversity of our country.”
You hear that sucking sound? That’s the sound of all of Canada’s jobs moving to Trump’s America.
Retarded Step kids Gonna Retard
That’s OK, they won’t be able to get past Trump’s Big Beautiful Barricade.
Fuck, unless he gets #metoo-ed, that asshole is at least a two-termer. For the record, Americans: having third and fourth (and now maybe even fifth) party doesn’t help one whit!
The number of parties is irrelevant if the number of mewling cabbages casting ballots holds steady.
God that is awesome.
I’d always hoped someday to the appointment of “Reinheitsgebot Czar”, but I’d take “Innovation Minister”. Sounds cool af.
And largely useless.
See, I deal with corporate boards of directors all the time.
White, black, gay, straight, trans, man, woman, anything in between… nobody gives a shit. Now socioeconomic status? I’m not putting anyone on my Board that doesn’t know a lot about running a large organization. It’s straight up malpractice towards my shareholders if I do. So sorry, Zoolander, I’m not putting the guy who flips burgers on the Board over the COO of another company in a related industry.
“When companies are looking for a new hire they “should be identifying women candidates at a rate equal to men.”
Good luck doing that with garbagemen, lumberjacks, fishermen and basically any blue collar job that isn’t medical or education related. It’s like they want to drive their businesses to us.
I have yet to hear the calls to equalize the trucking business, in which the driving end is 90-95% dudes.
Davos is a joke.
An interesting article on how Russian police, prosecutors, and those who are connected politically gang up to wage legal warfare on their rivals and steal or destroy their businesses. It’s no wonder their economy is in such bad shape while being so resource rich with stuff like this going on.

You think Canada can’t virtue signal harder? HA! It is to laugh!
Canada now has a gender neutral national anthem after Senate passes bill
Also, headline lies, as right below you have: “Bill must now receive royal assent by Governor General before becoming law”
The US anthem is gender neutral in that bit everyone sings.
Its the verses that nobody ever sing that cause problems for people that get upset over such things. Doesnt matter that nobody sings them- its triggering just cause they’re there.

Way OT, I have a front row seat in watching a friend fuck up his life due to a meth addiction. It’s painful to watch.
That sucks. Sorry.
He’s a smart guy…and has been successful, in spite of his addiction problem. From what I’ve seen lately, the addiction has grown larger than he can contain. I just don’t get pissing away your whole life, family, success, etc. chasing a fleeting high.
It’s not a rational decision. Therefore, you can’t help them rationalize their way out of it.
I’ve watched multiple relatives and a couple friends die from their habits. Until they hit bottom and survive it, there’s really very little you can do as an outsider. Supporting their family during the experience is usually the best option.
My brother is in prison on a charge related to his meth use. He has a 3 year old son and he was given many chances to get things together after his initial arrest. He has gone to rehab and he quit for awhile but he didn’t really want to stop he just wanted to avoid jail so it didn’t last.
Wait….you’re friends with most of my cousins?
You really can’t help, only wait and watch and hope they don’t Die, and sometimes they do, like my First Wife, and sometimes you don’t like me
/Sad but true story
“/Sad but true story”
Sorry Yusef.
Here’s what I’ve learned about addiction, and I dont think *normal* people can appreciate the gravitas of it- once you get truly dependent on anything (and in some other thread we can argue the medical merits of a “disease” label), your full-time job becomes that addiction. Its as easy as someone that says “I cant function till I have my cup of coffee” to “smoke break outside every day at ______ o’clock” to “Im gonna rob this fucker cause if I dont get what I need, I feel so bad Im literally in a hell.” The primary difference between coffee and smokes, while demonstrably addictive & unhealthy, are legal and accepted. Meth, smack, coke- not so much. Even alcohol falls in a grey area of tolerance.
Other rule I’ve learned- you wont ever meet a happy addict.
But you see that’s why it’s such a problem for so many people to even consider the idea of decriminalizing drugs.
All the alternatives to making it hard to GET drugs, by locking up ‘evil pushers’ is so far outside their comprehension (and sometimes my comprehension) that “lock ’em up and throw away the key” is the nearest thing to a rational conclusion they can arrive at.
The War On Drugs in the US has cost us around 2 trillion dollars. And the only effects I see are more people in prison, more black people in prison, more people getting out of prison with felony convictions that make them less able to get a decent job, and therefore making them dependent on gov’t social work, and I can get heroin easier now than I ever dreamed possible.
The whole system is rigged to insure to keep a large group of people dependent on the gov’t.
See also: Section 8 housing
Yes.
The problem is how to get the public – who hears stories like the ones we hear all the time – to change their natural reflexes SO MUCH, that they are prepared to try radical new ideas.
I don’t think the public are literally idiots, but I doubt the ability of a majority of them to ‘think different’ and wish to try a different solution.
Well, most people are amenable to legalizing marijuana. Public opinion can sway. And as much as I wish AG Sessions would have a simultaneous stroke, heart attack, and get fed into a wood chipper- he’s right about Federal Law. They ignore the 10A when it doesnt suit them, but he’s gonna use the whole “recreational marijuana is legal in California” to fuck them over on immigration and sanctuary cities.
But as someone that doesnt use drugs other than alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine, I still have a problem with the current prohibition cause it doesnt show results. Drug use in the US has remained about the same for the past 40-50 years. The “demand” side of the equation has never appreciably changed; the gov’t disrupts the “supply” side based on a moral imperative to STOP *something*. So what do you have? People willing to go to great lengths to provide services to the “demand” side. Those people are the addicts you read about.
Been there Sean. The advice you are getting is sound. I wish I could tell you different, but they are correct.

Student faces expulsion after publishing evidence-free list of alleged campus sexual assaulters
https://www.thecollegefix.com/post/41478/
***
A student at Middlebury College says she’s facing expulsion after publishing a crowd-sourced list of reputed sexual assaulters under the banner of “Men to Avoid.”
The list, posted to Facebook in December under the “friends of friends” privacy setting, offered no evidence to back claims that included emotional abuse, sexual harassment, sexual assault and rape by students at the Vermont private college.
Middlebury senior Elizabeth Dunn posted the list in order to “move toward a conversation” about sexual assault that was inspired by the #MeToo movement, she told Vermont alternative weekly Seven Days.
While the post originally began as a lone accusation against a man who had allegedly assaulted Dunn several years earlier, Dunn invited readers to “dm [direct message] me more names to add to this status.”
“The messages just started pouring in,” she told Seven Days. “There’s just a lot of collective pain and trauma that people have experienced here” at Middlebury, she added.
Dunn evidently took no steps to verify any of the claims she posted, which featured accusations such as “physically /emotionally abusive,” “rapist, physically violent,” “treats women but especially Black women like shit” and “serial rapist.” The list was quickly taken down by Facebook, but physical copies of it were subsequently placed around campus, according to school newspaper The Middlebury Campus.

The Sumerians believed that false accusations were one of the worst crimes. The accused were thrown into rivers. If they did not drown, it proved they were telling the truth.
Goodbye assets too (if she has any worth taking).
What’s libel?
/retarded feminist
Hopefully they sue her for all her future assets as well meaning her paychecks from writing derp for Jezebel.
The Sumerians were men of science.
Those accused of witchcraft were weighed. If they weighed more than a duck, it proved they could float and must be made of wood. Thus, they must be a witch.

Damn. I should have scrolled down. You beat me to the duck joke.
So false accusations are heavier than a duck?
Could you imagine if somebody put up a list of “Women to avoid”, saying they faked accusations of sexual assault?
(Jackie Coakley would have to be near the top of the list.)
Let’s Go Caps!
Like, ALL CAPS?
Like Holtby just got scored on twice in the first eight minutes.
I am back at work full-time this week and I am exhausted. But, I talked to a man in the elevator who was out for ten days with this flu. Things could be worse.
We had a local popular talk radio host who died a week and a half ago who had been displaying flu like symptoms.
Wow! Don’t think I’ve ever been sick for 10 days – I consider myself very fortunate.
This strain is seriously nasty. I haven’t been this sick since I had mono in my 20s.
Ditto.
I told my doctor my temperature over the phone, and he didn’t believe me. And then I went in for the office visit…
It’s been 3 1/2 weeks, and I’m still not 100%. Each day is better than the last, but recovery is slow.
The first time I went in, the doc said, I’ll write you a note. I said, I don’t need a note for today. Doc said Oh no, you need to be out the rest of the week, minimum. Since I could barely sit up, I said, oh, okay.
Then, I wasn’t better, so I went back and argued about going part time. He wanted me to just stay home. I wasn’t contagious, so I worked part time.
I was out three full days and then only part time last week. I was part time last week out of my own stubbornness. I have deadlines.
I’m pretty sure that I’ve never had the flu as an adult. I’m also a carrier for strep, so… I sympathize but can’t empathize?
I doubt anyone on Google campus takes that seriously anymore.
They read all my Mom’s email and sell her information to advertisers. She says she uses a strong password on her email account because she cares about her privacy.
Evil. evil. evil. evil.
I am slowly but surely withdrawing from using any software made by Apple, Google, or Microsoft.
The only things I have a problems with—getting away from Google?
Duck Duck Go doesn’t always give me the search results I want. The profiling Google does really does make their search results substantially better. I go to Google for searches maybe one out of ten times now.
YouTube. I love me some YouTube.
Smart phones. Blackberry sucks and Apple’s just as bad as Google.
It’s not enough to simply not use the obvious Google services with Android either–and tearing Google’s guts out of Android is a big deal. That’s why I’m really stoked about this project:
https://eelo.io/
I’ll be among the first in line when they go live.
Incidentally, just because the market doesn’t want what I want–or, rather, wants exactly what I don’t want–doesn’t mean it’s a market failure.
The market doesn’t really give a shit about privacy. The market’s out there telling the world everything about themselves and their children on Facebook.
That’s not the direction I’m goin’.
When the market doesn’t cater to my tastes, and I go look to open source and free software, I don’t think that mean I’m betraying capitalism and the profit motive.
It just means that the market for my tastes isn’t big enough to drive the market.
I used to go to live shows because you couldn’t find punk/hardcore recordings or hear it on the radio, too. The market was looking for wide scale sales that support advertising to a large audience. If I don’t like disco or fucking Steely Dan, that isn’t a market failure.
P.S. Android + iPhone = shitty disco
Google can eat a bag of dicks.
Seriously, it’s just a matter of time until they’re monitoring everything we do and say to each other, and if the only substantial thing standing between the government taking advantage of Google’s data collection is the Facebook Generation’s sense of privacy, we’re fucked.
People will install Google devices in their homes that listen to everything they say in the hope of them saying something to the device–and pay for the privilege!
Evil. Evil. Evil. Evil. Evil.
For a while, there were services like Scroogle and Froogle that were basically search proxies for google that claimed to be anonymous. There are services like ixquick (startpage.com) which look promising but I haven’t tested. I usually get by on DuckDuckGo, but occasionally resort to Google, but then, I use a VPN 100% of the time and I guess I could use google’s search engine with impunity, but DDG’s a habit now.
I’m using VPN almost 100% of the time.
I find that 90% of the time, I know what I’m looking for when I do a search anyway.
It’s usually in reference to something I read elsewhere, and I’ve got probably 20 sites I read on a regular basis.
It works well enough.
I’ve been really happy with lavabit–although their metadata masking protocol isn’t even ready yet.
pCloud is working just as well or better than Google’s cloud service ever did for me–and they’re based in Switzerland.
My favorite computer right now is a Google Chromebook I bought three years ago for like $130. I reformatted the hard drive and installed GalliumOS on it, which is a Xubuntu version made specific for various Chromebook models–the big advantage being that all your drivers are pretty much guaranteed to work. Between using LibreOffice and Evolution for email, like I said, I’ve pretty much expunged Apple, Google, and Microsoft from my life. I’m even synching my iPod by way of Clementine rather than iTunes.
The only aspect that still bothers me is using a command line proprietary antivirus product for Linux from Sophos. It bugs me having something proprietary rather than open source scanning the contents of my files, but I don’t think there will ever be an open source anti-virus program that stays on top of things–and doesn’t use proprietary services. Then that Kaspersky controversy hit and confirmed all my worst fears about that . . .
Oh, the other thing I’m having a hard time staying away from is Skype. I’m on the road to Jitsi, too, which is open source and Microsoft free. It’s just getting other people to join me on the platform that’s a problem. Microsoft says that Skype is finally going to offer end to end encryption, but that’s only part of the issue . . .
Who will watch the watchers?
If Microsoft is scanning your hard drive contents with Cortana and selling the information to advertisers, then who are they kidding about privacy considerations?
They say they’re only selling demographic information–but they’re scanning my tax returns along with everything else on my hard drive?
Why do people put up with this?
Same reason they put up with a massive, intrusive state apparatus that steals as much money as it can get away with, and shoots your dog.
It’s “easier” than freedom.
I guess so!
Entropy and laziness and building products that cater to and take advantage of entropy and laziness are a sure winner.
Freedom requires taking responsibility for yourself and taking responsibility for your own privacy requires effort.
I’m not sure I fear Idiocracy as much as I fear Laziocracy.
Wolves aren’t as smart as we are, but they can take care of themselves in part because they aren’t lazy.
We should have seen it coming when people were too lazy to set the time on their VCRs back in the ’80s.
I dunno about you, but I never set the time on my VCR – not because I was lazy – but because I was too stupid.
X-Files update: half way through Ep. 5 (MOTW). Shaping up to be pretty decent – big step up from last week.
Is it worth watching overall? I recorded but not watched them.
Hit or miss. Some have been good, some have been meh.
It’s very uneven. I thought Episodes 3 & 5 (so far) were/are really good. Ep. 2 was decent. Ep. 4, IMO was just stupid. It was written by Darin Morgan – who wrote some of the more tongue in cheek eps from the first run such as “Jose Chung’s It Came From Outer Space” but to me it was just an (unintended) farce. That said, someone else here thought all the eps through last week were really good.
General spoilers follow.
There’s a decent amount of TDS thrown in. Apart from the stupidity of it, what irritates me is that it moves the villain from the amorphous secret government of the original series (which implied all members of the visible government were saps) and makes the visible political class the enemy.
The first ep. (really the only one that touches the mythology arc) appears to have basically pissed all over the original premise of the show although, of course, Carter could twist the plotlines again.
OT: So,….I’ve recently begun a tentative email correspondence with senate hopeful Austin Petersen. Needless to say, I am not in lockstep with every issue on his platform but, he’s a helluva lot better than McCaskill or the rest of the presumed Republican field.
If by some grace of god he is willing to be interviewed by the founders, I’ll do my best to make that happen. That will not be in the immediate future, I’m sure. But hey, a little further down the road? Who knows. If nothing else it would be an interesting read.
Wish me luck!
Excellent. That’s Missouri, right?
Yeah…goddammit! I finally blew my cover. Hi, the name’s TH, I live in Kansas City.
I lived in Prairie Village and Olathe while I was in grad school (97-04).
Ah, okay. I’ve lived the majority of my life(not all. I spent several years on the East Coast) in the KC/Missouri northland. I used to date a girl from Olathe in my early twenties.
Yes, I just looked at his campaign site. He talks a good game.
He leans a bit too SoCo for my tastes but in comparison to the rest of them….well….I swore I’d never vote for The Least of Weevils after the GayJay fiasco…but I just may again.
I did one interview early on in the site’s history (with an Islamic libertarian) and he seemed to think that it was done fairly despite me being… you know. I’d love to interview Petersen if he’s willing.
I remember that. As I recall, you were both respectful and upfront towards one another. A Petersen interview would be very entertaining, I’m sure.
“and he seemed to think that it was done fairly despite me being… you know.”
I dont get it.

Still drawing a blank….
You are kidding, right Tres? Or am I too groggy and I missed something? Sometimes I can be thick.

Ohhhhhh!
I was hung-up on the idea of a “libertarian muslim”, since Islam incorporates religion and gov’t all into 1 entity, and cant really be favorable to libertarian ideals.
I know OMWC is (((them))). I got the best shakshuka recipe ever from here/him. So good, I cant get em to leave on Sunday morning.
I can see a libertarian practicing or following the teachings of Mohammad, but I cant see a dyed-in-the-wool muslim embracing libertarian ideals. The two are, to me, mutually exclusive.
Yes, I was being deliberately obtuse.

I thought it was the pedo thing. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Yeah, ’cause that’s a problem for Muslims…

Killer whale learns how to mimic human speech
https://www.cnn.com/2018/01/31/europe/killer-whale-mimics-human-voice-intl/index.html

From the water, a high-pitched squeak calls out “hello” but the sound is not coming from a human, it’s a whale.
A team of international researchers have taught a female orca whale to imitate human speech, documenting what is considered to be a world first in a paper published Wednesday.
Using Wikie the whale, who lives at the Marineland Aquarium in southern France as their test subject, scientists discovered a whale could learn new vocalizations by imitating its trainer.
Wikie was able to repeat a handful of words including “hello,” “bye bye,” “one, two” and “Amy.”
“We found that the subject made recognizable copies of all familiar and novel conspecific and human sounds tested and did so relatively quickly (most during the first 10 trials and three in the first attempt),” the experts revealed in their paper.

MSNBC star Joy Reid downplays MS-13, says only Fox News viewers have heard of dangerous gang
http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2018/01/31/msnbc-star-joy-reid-downplays-ms-13-says-only-fox-news-viewers-have-heard-dangerous-gang.html
***
Often-misinformed MSNBC star Joy Reid is under the impression that international criminal gang MS-13 isn’t a major issue and the only people that have even heard of the thugs are regular viewers of Fox News.
During Tuesday’s State of the Union address, President Trump kicked off the immigration portion of his speech by detailing the horror of two teenage girls who were killed by MS-13, an international crime gang comprised mainly of El Salvador immigrants, while their parents were in the building.
“Two precious girls were brutally murdered while walking together in their hometown,” Trump said. “Four men associated with MS-13 have been charged with the killings… I am calling on the Congress to finally close the deadly loopholes that have allowed MS-13, and other criminals, to break into our country.”
During MSNBC’s coverage of the State of the Union, Reid mocked the president’s remarks while analyzing the speech with “Hardball” host Chris Matthews.
“He gives a speech tonight, in which he makes it sound like the biggest issue in the United States, the biggest threat is MS-13, a gang nobody that doesn’t watch Fox News has ever heard of. So he makes it sound like they’re the biggest threat.”
Reid said Trump simply mentioned the deadly gang to accommodate the “audience he wants applause from.”
Well, it turns out Reid needs to consume more news.
A search of “MS-13” on CNN’s website reveals dozens of articles that mention the gang.

She should refer to them as the JV team.
Saw the same sentiment at TOS earlier. We’ve only heard of them because the alt-right media is cynically using them as a prop to bolster their nativist fantasies. This was from a staff member (and not even who you would think).
Zach?
Now that’s ironic, because MS-13 is all over the DC area. Local news does as much coverage as you need, never mind Fox News. In fact, there have been more than a few instances where a girlfriend of a member–and we’re talking teenage girls, I believe one was 15–was murdered, in a couple cases by the boyfriend, because they wanted out of the gang and the gang was afraid they’d flip, or because they just broke up with the guy, or because someone thought she _might_ snitch. Killed, throats cut, tossed in the woods type of shit.
These people are the scum of the Earth. God forbid they should get a hold on this area. MS-13 is the kind of gang that merits a shoot on sight policy. There are a lot of young Hispanic immigrants in my area these days, and I’ve definitely started to see some MS tags. The way they operate in this area is to lay up with immigrant households, especially illegal/undocumented, and blackmail or intimidate their housemates. Maybe Joy should do a little bit of light reading and learn a bit about them before she just flippantly decides they’re a figment of our imaginations.
Are you suggesting that TOS is becoming indistinguishable from CNN?
God no. Well, until you get to the comments.
What Does 9/11 Mean to People in Afghanistan?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SimIS_cQ6ko
short version- they have no idea
Well of course. Those are Murhican numbers, duh. You have to translate them into Arabic numbers.
(I know, I know, Afghanis are not Arabs, Arabic numbers originally came from India, etc. Shut up and laugh at my joke.)
this is sort of an evergreen story
an army officer who was training afghan troops made a habit of asking people why the Americans were in their country. most believed it had something to do with oil, mineral rights, stealing their women, or didn’t really think about it all that hard. almost no one had ever heard of 9/11 and thought the idea of planes crashing into buildings was…. well, the ‘stealing our women’ seemed more plausible.
See!?! Even ignorant goat herders know that Jerry fuel can’t melt steel!!!!!1!1!!eleventyone111
Sigh. Jet fuel, stoopid phone, jet fuel.

If the Good Idea Fairy swooped in and made me king for a day…
-all soldiers would be required to study a foreign language; if the Army can make people do push-ups, it can make them learn a few words and phrases. Bolt headsets broadcasting the target language on their heads if you must.
-pysops leaflets/broadcasts would not contain threats, boasts, or insults- only info on how to surrender and assurances that those who surrender will not be harmed
There’s no way that was accidental.
Were there pictures of the soles of shoes plastered around the margins too?
It’s obvious the idiot who approved it knows next to nothing about the local culture or language.
Unfortunately, those with the expertise tend not to be decision makers.
What was the rationale for choosing a dog? I mean, Barney the Dinosaur would have been better. Or a cat. Or a kangaroo.
To make the message “friendly” because a dog is man’s best friend?
Even my son knows what’s gonna piss off muslims. He knew when he was 10.
The idea was to associate the Taliban with something bad by putting the Taliban logo on a despicable thing. It’s the same rationale for associating Trump with Nazis.
However, the Taliban logo is an Arabic phrase all Muslims hold to be sacred.

The natives did not grok the concept of “winning”.
“barbarian tribe”
The Vandals or the Goths? I’m guessing it was the Goth. Stupid Germans
yeah, that’s WC’s point, and the insight which i think some of these young army dudes might not grasp. In a tribal mentality, War is generally transactional. You hurt some of theirs? they hurt some of yours. then you trade goats and everyone forgets it even happened.
The idea of an army occupying a foreign country over something that happened 18 years ago (*by someone not even from their tribe) makes no sense.
and the idea that someone from their dirt-farming stone-age world is a ‘threat’ to Big Bad Rich America makes even less sense.
Yet we think we can explain this to them by showing them some pictures and mouthing some PR bullshit about mutual security.
they’re like, yeah whatever, I’m pretty sure you just want to fuck my sister dude. Imma blow your shit up just in case.

I’ve started reading Fools Errand about the Afghan war – it’s way more fucked up than even I thought. One thing struck me in particular – an American GI who fought in the North of the country said never mind 9/11 the people didn’t know what Afghanistan was.

Against a newly discovered likelihood the Robert Mueller investigation began under false pretenses; and against the backdrop that FBI surveillance and wiretaps were obtained through materially (intentionally) false representations to the FISA court; and against the backdrop the original Flynn plea judge (Contrereas) was also the approving FISA judge; and that judge ‘was summarily recused’ from the case; and against increasing evidence that Mike Flynn was set up by a terminal animus, and politically-motivated investigative rogue unit, operating within the FBI; and against surfacing IG Horowitz evidence that FBI investigators manipulated (lied on) their FD-302 interrogation documents; and understanding those falsified 302’s were used in the Mueller/Flynn charging document…

Once it arrives, I shall be satisfied for a while.
Now all I need is that Ruger Carbine.
Beretta Storm?
Meh. No. This is a takedown like a 10/22. It’s a functional update of the old PC9.
Out of curiosity, where are you getting your ammo from? I’ve had a lot of good experiences with Freedom Munitions, but for 7.62×39 the best deals I’ve ever found were from Academy.
Well, this load is from Natchezss – first time I’ve used them. Often, I’ll buy from targetsportsusa.com. In volume, both ship for free. I’d like to use targetsports more, but since they’re in CT, I have to pay tax on the purchase, which chaps my ass no end, but their prices are good, and if you don’t mind waiting a week for the ammo to turn up, they’re fine.
I have a source (a guy who competes in bullseye) for my CCI Standard 22, and I’ll usually pick up Federal Auto to feed my 10/22 and CZ. If CNN ever break into my house, they’d shit themselves at the amount of 22 I have.
I’ve used Freedom, the ammo is fine, but at 20 cents a round remanufactured, it’s a bit expensive, even with their cheap shipping. I can get new brass 9mm 115gr for about 16 or 17 cents a round – Speer, Federal, Blaser.
For rifle, I’m 308-only and I filled my boots about 2 years ago and have plenty, although I keep my eyes open for deals. I usually will do some sanity checking at wikiarms.com from time to time just to make sure I’m in the right ballpark.
Ugh. Retype-time.
I only shoot 3 calibers. 9mm,22LR and 308. Oh, yeah, and some 38 special/357, but very little.
I have a contact who shoots bullseye in competitions and I buy some of his CCI 22 from him. If I see deals in local stores with Federal Automatch 22, I’ll buy that – my 10/22 and CZ are happy with that. CCI goes in the Victory and the S&W 41 I have on loan from a friend.
308, I filled my boots a couple years back and have – at current burn rate – about 5 years’ stock, but I’m always out looking for something like Lake City at 50 cents a round (fat chance)
9mm? I shop around a lot. Natchezss sold me this lot, Speer Gold Dot, bulk, at about 15cents a round plus shipping. I often buy from targetsportsusa.com who ship for free if you buy case-loads. They’re a bit slow in shipping, and in my case, I have to pay sales tax, but they often work out cheapest, although paying that state sales tax chaps my ass. I’ve bought from all over the place. I tend to buy 2000 at a time, but this deal with Natchezss matched up with me having a bit of cash to spare – it’s not like I won’t use the ammo.
I like the Freedom stuff, but it’s a bit spendy, even for remanufactured, but it’s good stuff and easily up to use for plinking and my tacti-tard courses I do.
I will reply, once the system takes my posting. I won’t forget you.
OK. Third time lucky.
I shoot 22, 9mm and 308
22, I use federal automag, which I just pick up when I see some at a good price. I also get CCI 22 from a guy I know who sells me some of the ammo he gets when he orders by the pallet. He shoots bullseye competitively and burns thru a LOT
For 308 – I filled my boots a few years back and probably have a couple years’ supply on hand, but I always keep my eyes open for elusive 50 cent Lake City (yeah, fat chance)
For 9mm? I buy from all over the place when I see a good deal. This lot was from Natchezss and while I had to pay shipping, the per-round price was good. Often, I’ll buy from TargetSportsUSA, who will ship for free when you order in bulk, but I have to pay sales tax which chaps my ass more than a bit. I’ll buy speer, Blazer, or Federal/Eagle in Walmart if they have a good deal. I’m a slut. When it comes to 9mm, I’ll find the cheapest SOB I can find that will sell jacketed pills.
I have used Freedom, and it’s good ammo, and their shipping is cheap, but even their remanufactured stuff works out a nickel more a round than I can get new brass at elsewhere.
sgammo.com for me
Missed most of the threads today. Any thoughts on the chinaman arrested at Virginia Tech?
So he bought the rifle? Other reports just said he used it at the range. Shouldn’t that have been stopped by the law on the books? Near as I can tell there is no evidence of a plot to do anything though. And, I thought the push was to extend all rights and privileges to anyone in the US, not just citizens. I guess if this law applied to any other amendment it would be decried as ‘racist’, but this is the world we live because TRUMP HAZ DIVIDED US!!11!!
Zhao was charged with possessing or transporting an assault firearm while not being a U.S. citizen or while not being lawfully admitted for permanent residence to the U.S.
Whoa whoa whoa – non-citizens are not entitled to Constitutional protections even while legally in US?
But people OUTSIDE US are entitled to them, provided they want to travel to US?
At any rate, it’s all fine till a Chinaman gets an SKS. Then it’s Chosin all over again.
The Chinaman is not the issue!
Maybe it’s a matter of perspective, but I know people who buy ammo in the thousands of rounds. That’s a lot of money for a college student, but I’m sitting here looking at 1000 rounds of 7.62×54 in cans that I’ll never shoot my way through. If I got a decent tax return and saw a good deal I’d consider dropping a grand on 7.62×39 if it was decent ammo, knowing that it would probably take me five years to work my way through it.
I mean, if we’re talking school shooter type of thing, 5000 rounds with one 30-round mag at a time is really, really optimistic. Like you’d probably need a nap at some point before you shot the whole pile. And anybody can go into anywhere and pick up a bunch of 5.56, it’s not like you need to get a mule to smuggle the stuff.
Because I played the Fallout games I know 5.56 rounds go in the Assault Rifle and the Chinese Assault Rifle. So that makes it scarier. Fuck my earlier opinion. This motherfucker was gonna go chink crazy! (not racist, because um, he was gonna shoot kids!)
At the very least he’d need a speed loader, or some really deft orphans. Loading mags really gives you sore thumbs.
Well, I have about 22,000 rounds of 22, and about 8,000 of 9mm now, so I guess that makes me worse than a chinaman.
I’ll buy ammo sometimes when it’s on sale even if I don’t need it right now. That last period of high prices had influenced that.
As a non-citizen, but a Green Card holder, I am afforded those protections.
If he bought that rifle outside VA, some states would permit the purchase, and while he may have bought the firearm from a family member (hence no 4473 check), he could also have bought it with a 4473 filing and had the application pass if he filed additional information as requested by the ATF. In short, his ownership of that gun might be entirely kosher by federal law.
I watched a Smithsonian Channel documentary today about Hank Aaron. The whole thrust of the piece was about how he had to face racism during his career.
One piece of evidence shared was when he played in Milwaukee he bought a house in the suburbs, When he went over to introduce himself the neighbor’s dog barked at him and the neighbor’s response was ‘Sorry. He doesn’t see many black people.’ What? A neighbor’s dog is evidence of racism? They then went on to state as a matter of fact that Hank Aaron was only allowed to move to this suburb because he was famous. In the north, where there was no segregation. I’m guessing it’s more in the realm of only able to afford.
Another piece of evidence they brought up was how many racist letters he received on his way to breaking Babe Routh’s record. They asserted this was because he was black man trying to break a white man’s record. But it made me wonder. When Emit Smith (a black man) broke Walter Payton’s (a black man) record, how many angry racist screeds were written by assholes? Since it was the internet age, I’m guessing a lot. So it’s not so much about ‘racial superiority’ as it is about assholes who write screeds.
All of this being said, I’m a northern white boy born in the 80s, so what do I know.
As an outsider, while I live in the North, I traveled extensively around the South – mostly this side of the Mississippi, and the most egregious cases of racism I’ve ever seen were perpetrated in the North. Anecdote, sure, but it was a bit of a shock seeing how some of those Boston Brahmins treat the picaninnies.
Like a few of you, I’m trying to eliminate Google and Facebook from my life, but good Lord is it difficult. I’ve got Protonmail now, which is awesome, and I just started using Brave as a browser. The most difficult part is getting my friends and family on board. This is still the realm of whackjobs to them. How can otherwise rational people be so clueless?
Don’t answer that, it’s rhetorical.
I have most of my friends and family on Signal.
I run signal, it’s not bad. I think Threema is much better, but it’s not free, and it doesn’t run as seamlessly side-by-side with normal texting.
How to evangelize about this? Ultimately, there’s a “Come to Steve Smith” moment where some news item impinges on their imagination and they wonder “what if?”. How easy is it to convince people to look at the US Economy as a Ponzi scheme? They have to be bilked before they buy that story.
There are some opportunities.
“See those ads for butt plugs? Ever wonder why you keep getting them? I don’t. See how they’re from firms whose sites you never visited? How did that happen? I can tell you”
“That time you had to cancel all your cards after Target got hacked? That was a nuisance, wasn’t it?”
“How about those spammers! They’re getting really clever at figuring out that you might want to see nude Tongan Feminists wrestling in jello. They even figured out your sister and niece like that stuff too!”
“Remember that time Bob was hit by ransomware attack and lost everything, even though he paid $600 in Bitcoin to get all his shit back? Good times, good times!”
