Just one lone game on the ice last night? Jeez, NHL. Throw me a bone here. Anyway, Columbus dispatched with the Maple Leafs. The Jags’ DE Ngakoue stands by his assertion that Richie Incognito called him a racial slur. Nobody on the field, which totals at least 21 people, several officials, those with sideline mics and the people catching almost everything with tv cameras, managed to hear anything, and Ngakoue won’t even say what the word was, although he has said that he “doesn’t remember” if he said the n-word. What a strange situation where the only guy getting press on it is the one guy who simply can’t, or won’t, recall what was said. And Andy Murray lets the media know that he had hip surgery and will miss at least the Australian Open and French Open this year.
Anyway, that’s it for sports. Let’s quickly and quietly move right into…the links!

Idiot
I didn’t think it was possible, but Meryl Streep has gone even further up her own asshole. All we needed was an encore performance of her giving a standing ovation to a convicted child rapist or calling someone “a God” that everybody in her profession knew was a serial sexual assaulter. That would have crowned her Queen Shithead in perpetuity.
Ghana’s Immigration Service says it will not hire women who have bleached their skin or have stretch marks. Hey, I know black is beautiful, but are you telling me that white can’t be right? I reserve comment on the stretch marks pending further explanation.

“Seriously, Captain. It was like this when I got here! And, um, I’m not drunk, but I still won’t submit to a test.”
You want to read about a shitshow? Well, here’s your chance. Never change, Chicago cops or the people who work closely with them. Well, actually do change and stop being so corrupt. It would be nice for your residents and visitors to know the guy near them carrying a gun and wearing a badge will be held to the same standards of the law that they are.
Remember when O.J. Simpson penned “If I Did It”, or whatever that book was called? Well it looks like the NYPD’s very own “Cannibal Cop” has decided to follow the same script after being released from prison.
What a dumbass. Has he never heard of a boot? Or a book? Or…hell, almost anything wound have been smarter than what he decided to do.

I don’t do spiders either, but…seriously dude?
Some dude killed his “wife”. GLAAD goes off the rails. Hey, you know it might have been a domestic dispute instead of an attack on the entire tranny movement. You know, since all of the evidence points in that direction.
Salvadoreans are afraid their country might not be ready for the return of some of their 2 million people living in America. The people were granted temporary status in America following an earthquake…in 2001. The returns might happen for less than 10% of those here over the next two years. Because, you know, 17 years isn’t enough time to rebuild some infrastructure and get people home after an earthquake.
::googles photos of Berlin or Paris in 1960::
Yeah, its possible to accomplish a rebuilding effort if you really want to.
After these links, we all deserve this song.
Good luck out there today. It’s a crazy world.
It was an apartment too.
Poor landlord.
Monarchist argues for monarchy, gets cause and effect backwards
As best as I could tell, the argument boils down to “look how stable monarchies are.” This is like saying “Everyone who switched car insurance providers saved money.” These countries are not stable because they are monarchies, these countries have remained monarchies because they are stable. The unstable monarchies discarded their royals over the past few hundred years. (And people who wouldn’t save money didn’t change insurance carriers.)
Though I can’t blame a dottering old Russian Count for trying.
Wait is this an argument for Emperor Trump?
+1 Moldbug
“discarded their royals” like with a guillotine?
Sometimes. Other times they used firing squads, or just plain old exile.
Or rifle fire….or exile, etc.
Many were simply exiled. Those exiles also apply to direct-line male descendents in many cases, which raises some interesting questions about individual freedom and heritability of guilt.
Given the human desire to genuflect, having a powerless figure like Brenda as the focus is in some ways better than someone who can do real damage, like any Democrat president (Republicans don’t get the same tongue-bathing).
Charlie-boy is an utter tit, though, so I might change my mind once she pops her clogs.
I think that’s a not-uncommon sentiment. Charles has the opportunity to re-educate the Subjects with a reversion-to-Monarchist-mean.
If we’re ever stupid enough to go this route, we’d better do what Twain suggested and just use cats for the royal family. Same effect.
And a rabbit Pope.

NorCal man reportedly sets fire to apartment while trying to kill massive spider with lighter
I can’t imagine what the rate of spider driven house fires in Australia is.
The spiders skip the middle man and just torch the places themselves.
Look, the guy was just pulling a James Bond move. That went horribly wrong.
Why rules on smoking should get even tougher
Has this person never heard of the lure of the forbidden?
I am not convinced second hand smoke is that harmful. But then again if people accept it voluntarily like in a bar I have no issue
I believe there aren’t any studies that definitively demonstrate actual measurable harm from second hand smoke, unless there is something recent that I’m unaware of.
That is my understanding as well. It’s been used to scare/guilt people into regulation, but can’t be actually tied back.
And what about 3rd hand smoke?
There is
a growing body of evidenceone bullshit study that this lingering tobacco residue has significant health risks. Our day care provider has had the regulations turned up to 11 the last 5-7 years or so. One of the latest was she had to prove there was no smoking in her house (home-based provider) since the residue could be harmful for kids.
I am only familiar with one study on second hand smoke. The study showed that second hand smoke causes no measurable harm .
Penn and Teller did a Bullshit episode on it.
For what it’s worth (not much really) I believe that episode is actually the only one that Penn & Teller “apologized” for, saying that they had the info wrong.
I’m some rando on the Internet, but my understanding is that most of the tests that claim to prove harm from secondhand smoke based on studying reported exposure over time don’t account for things like exposure to other carcinogens or, you know, lying about smoking, and they’re operating under the assumption that because there are carcinogens in burning tobacco they’ll all be there in the same concentrations when a smoker has exhaled. It seems reasonable to think that if you’re burning bundles of tobacco to keep warm you’ll experience the same risks as if you were smoking cigarettes on a regular basis, but exhaled smoke is going to have fewer contaminants, one would imagine.
She ascribes her 5% figure to “passive smoke exposure,” which seems like a very open-ended term that could include a variety of effects, like living downwind of a coal-burning power plant.
My grandpa smoked in the house so much and for so long that 5-6 years after his passing, and after changing the curtains and carpet and painting the whole interior, you can still smell it in my grandma’s house. He did not die from anything smoking-related and my grandma is not showing any signs of being affected by it either.
Causing someone to be more likely to smoke clearly inflicts substantial harm on that person.
This is nonsensical garbage. “Causing someone to be more likely to smoke” WTF does that even mean?
I have never heard even the staunchest libertarian say, “I hope my children grow up to be smokers.”
And this is an irrelevant nonsequitur. What people want for their own children, and what the government should punish by fines and jail, are two totally different things.
even strict libertarians concede the legitimacy of regulations to prevent undue harm to others
And this is just a flat-out lie. “Strict libertarians” support the “legitimacy” of laws redressing demonstrable harm, after the fact. Crimes and torts. Your vague intuition that second-hand smoke gave you the badfeels does not rise to the level of tort, never mind crime.
It’s the same premise that violent media causes violence. Seeing people do X makes people do X.
Are Sunday schools having an issue with kids doing crucifixions?
Well…
*glances at procession depiction the stations of the cross*
no, most definately not.
Yeah, when I see “strict libertarian” I think Murray Rothbard’s approach to air pollution. And even the softest libertarian who is still a libertarian stops at regulations that prevent specific, demonstrable harms proven through a clear cause-and-effect. Again, the air pollution example; you own a factory throwing a bunch of particulate in the air, just because a person can’t prove that your specific factory caused him to develop asthma doesn’t mean that you aren’t causing pollution that itself causes harm.
I hear Alabama won the SEC Championship and UCF won the National Championship.
The Securities and Exchange Commission runs a competition?
It isn’t very competitive.

Oh, the Ponzi bowl.
*loud applause*
Christa Leigh Steele-Knudslien is the first known transgender person to be killed this year, LGBT organization GLAAD said.
Figured we were at 80 or 90 thousand by this point.
With how few there are, we’d have run out long ago at that rate.
If we’d stop killing them, we’d have millions.
My question is: if they’re post-op, how does GLAAD know they’re trannies? Unless…their grnetic structure stays the same after they mutilate themselves.
TFA says she was a high profile activist for yrans causes. A movement person.
So, the publicizing of this person’s death by other activists is kind of like how cops seem to expend 100x the effort on investigating/revenging cop deaths.
You mean like Rachel Dolezal was? 😉
Genetic structure is a tool that the cisgender patriarchy uses to oppress threats to its privilege.
Or it might be tricknology. I’ll have to get back to you.
Yeah, what about all the people killed by net neutrality and the tax bill.
Oh, that was all last year.
Edit fairy, why didn’t you reply with a “first” gif?
OK. Too tasteless and too soon. Still…
*narrows gaze*
I had an actual conversation with a co-worker on this point, one who expressed concern that “X number of transgender people were the victims of violent crime last year,” implying of course that these people were more prone to be such victims.
“What’s the denominator?” I asked. I got a blank look and a reply that amounted to “bwuh?”
“You gave me the numerator,” I said, “now I need the denominator. Out of how big a population? Is the percentage of transgenders who are such victims higher or lower than the population at large?”
The conversation then devolved to how I was an unfeeling white cishet shitlord. I should know better than to get involved with these people.
Statistics aside, the concern is motive. Whether people are being attacked for being transgender.
Should motive drive policy?
Lol given that there are only somewhere around 200,000 Transgender people in the entire friggin country it’s not likely
I read at some pro trans site the number was somewhere between 60-70,000.
I didn’t think it was possible, but Meryl Streep has gone even further up her own asshole. – Di caprio for Secretary in charge of climate change and 20 year old models.
Can I haz Undersecretary position?
That’s the 20 year old model’s position
Don’t other Switzy, he identifies as a twenty year old model!
*2.55 and – model.
Wait? Female models or climate models?
Oprah! and Hillary! have a lot in commoon.
Oprah’s smeared with the garbage permeates damn everything and everyone in Hollywood? Say it ain’t so.
But Trump said they let you grab ’em by the pussy! Which is so much worse!
It kind of sounds like if he had helped her career, she’d have been cool with the whole thing.
Yeah, this is basically a contract action.
Well, we’ve established what she is, the lawsuit is just haggling over the price.
Makes me seriously wonder how many “stars” banged their way into big roles. How the hell did an unknown Meryl Streep land a big with Dustin Hoffman in Kamer vs. Kramer?
Lol. I think that was the porno version.
I don’t think she was an unknown then. She’d already been in “The Deer Hunter” at that point I think.
I refuse to look her up on IMDB
Meryl Streep’s value on the casting couch would’ve have qualified her for a Lifetime Original Movie, at best.
Reminds me very much of the last of the most recent Dave Chappelle standups.
She’s claiming its sex trafficking because he promised her career advancement in return for sex but didn’t deliver on his end of the bargain. But in another part she’s also saying that he “forced” himself on her. So did he rape her or did she agree to have sex with the idea that she’d get something out of it? None of this sounds like trafficking – it sounds like she was either raped or Harvey is just an asshole that doesn’t follow through on his end of deals.
Maybe she fucked up… err… blew the audition?
or, more likely, didn’t blow it.
This story did not have a happy ending.
So I will try another Romanian joke to see if it carries over (concepts and my translation)
So as background communists build a lot of those concrete brutalist apartment buildings. The walls were very thin so noise was a big deal among neighbours, especially home improvement.
So here’s the joke:
It is 3 AM on a Tuesday. Suddenly … my next door neighbor starts banging on my door. I was so startled I almost dropped the power drill.
Making peep-holes into your neighbors’ bedrooms?
*Scratches head, raises finger, goes back to scratching head*
I don’t get it. Well maybe?
No shit. When does the vampire come in? Is the neighbor knocking because the garlic you have on your door prevents him from flying in the window and draining you?
So thin that even when you’re making noise, you can hear your neighbor knocking. My guess, anyways.
A “power drill”, huh? Is it a “Body Double” joke?
Ok the ideea is that a drill can make a lot of noise. So drilling in your apartment at 3 AM will wake up your neighbors and piss them off.
The main elements of the joke were 3 AM – tells the time, middle of the nigh, when it is usually quite. Suddenly – it can be unexpected for your neighbor to knock on your door in the middle of the night for no reason. And the key, the punchline of almost dropping the drill tells the listener that the character was actually in the process of drilling something, making a lot of noise and thus negating the “unexpected” part of the joke. Very often in jokes the punchline negates the expectations set up by the joke
Anyhoo.
But because it made perfect sense, there was no laugher inducing realization.
Let’s try that set up another way: It’s 2 am and the Russians hack Huma’s computer camera and find Anthony talking to his grandmother on Skype.
His grandmother is only 15? That’s weird.
born on leap day?
Last summer, at a Labor Day block party, the French-Canadian neighbor said “half the time she understands the words but has no idea why we are laughing.”
I got it. Don’t be so sad. Did all your ships sink?
Maybe “the neighbor bangs on my door, screaming like a lunatic” and “I was so startled, I let go of the jackhammer” ?
It’s not the punchline, it’s how he tells it?
May be. I think all the explaination about noise and architecture may have ruined the delivery. It might have gone over better delivered as-is without the preface.
Also, typing a joke has got to be the hardest way to get a laugh. So much of comedy is delivery.
I smiled.
It was a pity smile.
Reason celebrates ‘Little Mogadishu’

They always pick a restaurant enterpreneur. Always. As if having 500 falafel places is just amazing, and look at this guy who started up number 501.
And that story only goes one way. If I go to Domalia and open a McDonald’s it is Colonialism and Cultural Imperialism and racist
Yeah, I wonder why they don’t profile one of the many daycares that the Somalis have started?
the same guy who’d been profiled a few months earlier in the Minnesota Post
Actual reporting is hard, and shit. It’s not like they’re getting paid to do it, right?
Just to nitpick, but there is no Minnesota Post. There is a website called minnpost.com, but I don’t think anyone has ever called it the Minnesota Post.
Fair enough, but that aside the fact that Reason can’t be arsed to do any of its own reporting, regardless of the narrative it’s pushing, is still true; they basically just find someone else’s reporting they like, and parrot it. Not that the original story on MinnPost was very in depth anyway; while data is not the plural of anecdote, one anecdote isn’t even plural.
Reason seems to be really pushing hard on the “BUT MUH IMMIGRANT FOOD” narrative. Which is so openly pathetic a defense of immigration that I wonder if they’re not a false flag now.
Without 11 million illegal aliens from Mexico, we wouldn’t be able to have tacos and burritos. Is that the kind of food desert you want?
Horrible food deserts like Norway.
Euromex food is trash. If I want consistency when I am on travel I go for indian.
Its astonishing how shallow many multi-culti people really are. The “tasty foreign food” thing is often just about the only benefit to multi-culturalism and diversity they can actually name. And honestly, I like all kinds of chow as much as the next person, but it weighs pretty lightly in the balance of whether the country is better off with or without immigration from any given country.
I mean, if that’s all they got, well, that’s not much, and I’m not sure I want to build an entire culture around easy access to take-out Thai.
Remember when O.J. Simpson penned “If I Did It”
“If I Ate It”?
“If I had a dinner reservation”?

“The appropriation of a vegan diet is mobilized as part of a post-feminist ethics that promotes an individualistic form of emancipation, which sustains existent patterns of discrimination and inequality, consumerism and neoliberalism,” Fegitz and Pirani explain.
***
Ooh, they surpassed Gilmore’s Rule of 3 and pushed it to 4.
***
The professors then spell out three main concerns they have with veganism, saying that not only does it promote “consumer culture,” but that the vegan ethos stresses the individual capacity of humans to make their own choices, which is troublesome because it ”leads to the responsibilization of the individual.”
Veganism can also be used to promote a “sexy body,” which can require “self-management, -control, and -discipline,” they lament.
***
***
“Indeed, Beyoncé’s uptake and promotion of a vegan diet highlights what Elspeth Probyn has called ‘choicechoisie,’ by which she means the bourgeois, neo-liberal logic of shaping personal identity through the exercise of consumer choice,” they state.
“Ultimately, the post-feminist endorsement of veg*ism becomes a business opportunity, with celebrities such as Beyoncé capitalizing and aggrandizing their wealth through a dietary practice that eco-feminism has employed for political and ethical reasons,” the professors conclude.

Authentic frontier gibberish.

This actually makes more sense.
Now who can argue with that?
Oh, come on, that has to be an Alan Sokal type hoax paper.
That is way more plausible than thinking someone actually believes this crap.
When i read shit like this, it makes me wonder what goal the author is driving at. What do they think they are accomplishing by putting this out there?
Doctors write articles with lots of big words because they’re trying to further the understanding of disease and help find a cure. Historians write papers to promote knowledge and lessons of the past. Mechanical engineers write documents to explain complex physical principles.
What is THIS person doing, though? It seems to be a dim-witted attempt to sound intelligent and/or morally superior with a ton of phoney-baloney postmodern Marxist vocabulary thrown in. That kind of writing contributes nothing to the world.
that the vegan ethos stresses the individual capacity of humans to make their own choices, which is troublesome because it ”leads to the responsibilization of the individual.”
I…. Um… Yeah this is both incredibly stupid and hideously evil. They could fit at home in either political party.
Republicans don’t use that kind of language.

Stop making up words.
The sad thing is I don’t think Streep is really joking.
Dustin Hoffman knew how to deal with her.
I dunno man she is a good actress
I hear that said a lot, but I don’t see it. She always seems like Streep playing a role rather than totally disappearing into her character in the manner of someone like Martin Landau.
There’s a blank look to her face that disturbs me. Death Becomes Her was probably her most appropriate role.
Y’know, the thing about a Streep, she’s got lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll’s eyes. When she comes after ya, she doesn’t seem to be livin’ until she bites ya.
It’s the weirdly stiff and overly-mannered affect that she can’t seem to shake.
I expect her to break into a Master Thespian, “I’m ACTING!”
Genius!
Look she got the Oscar thing. Bad actors don’t get the Oscar things. Q.E.D
She’s a goddamn idiot. She’s good at pretending to be other people though.
I have never heard a more fitting description of an aspiring politician.
The strangest thing about this Oprah shit is that it demonstrates how absolutely empty the Democratic bench is. Normally, there should be at least a few experienced pols who are signalling their intentions to run and it would suck all the funding out of any fantasy candidacy like Oprah’s.
Instead, the Dem party is looking around and saying, “She’s better than all these hacks we have.”
Yeah, I keep expecting Fauxcahontas to lift her snout out of the trough and announce she will be “exploring” a run. I mean, its a dead easy way to fleece the rubes for contributions, so why not?
Speaking of which, saw a joke the other day: “Its so cold, Elizabeth Warren is an Eskimo now.”
I Laughed!
I think that she is more self aware than Hillary and knows she can’t win nationally. Why risk her cushy Senate seat?
In a national race, her fake Indian blood would be an issue that would sink her. Only in deep blue Mass. could she get away with skeleton in her closet.

You might want to peer review that “credible” claim.
Yeah, I’d be checking that guy out, because unless he’s incredibly rich and/or famous, I’d be calling B.S. on that.
He was telling them about his twenty year career in porn.
Yeah, and the whole eleven guys were just wide-eyed and eager to learn misnmad PUA skills thing totally happened.

“But the center of attention was the guy who credibly claimed to have slept with over 500 women. ”
These people need Jesus.
Seriously, what is happening is the cementing further of their religion. They are shitty people and so they think everyone must need repent of the same sins. That’s why they talk about changing what it means to be ‘masculine’ i.e. throwing off the ‘natural man’.
They don’t want to be part of a religion, but they exhibit the worst parts of the religious: zelotry, and pride in they’re own piousness.
We have have shot the clerics and replaced them with the State.
So, the non-hysteric version of this story is that some dude at a reception made some crazy, unbelievable claim about his sexual conquests and the rest of the men talked to him about it. Presumably, nobody was taking notes, there was booze involved, and it was the time-honored social tradition known as “bullshitting”. And the author has sand in his vag because nobody invited him to talk about his kombucha or whatever. Well, shit, I guess bein’ a little bitch doesn’t pay off like you thought it would, huh?
“…the guy who credibly claimed to have slept with over 500 women.”

When U.S. Army leaders decided they needed an upgraded version of the M-1 Abrams tank, they wanted to get it without enduring what they consider to be a cumbersome formal acquisition process.
Any program of this scale would ordinarily be classified as a Major Defense Acquisition Program and be subject to the oversight reviews and regulations that status entails. To avoid this, Army leaders claimed a major modernization effort to a weapon central to their very identity was a mere design tweak, and managed the project through the far less rigorous Engineering Change Proposal process.
…
A Major Defense Acquisition Program goes through three separate phases. At the end of each phase, a program goes through a review process to determine whether it has met the criteria to move onto the next phase. These transitions are called “milestones.”
That means we will be spending $22 million to upgrade a $6 million vehicle.

Which is what the A-10 Warthog was designed to deal with
And why the air force so desperately wants to be rid of it.
We need to throw away the fixed wing/rotary delimiter and give ground support aircraft back to the army.
Given the army has no Air war doctrine, no pipeline for pilots or crew chiefs, you may as well argue to reintegrate the Air Force back into the Army.
I see nothing wrong with that.
But if they currently train rotory wing aircraft and have ground support doctrines, I’m sure we can find the people to develop the appropriate starting block for use of fixed-wing assets in a similar role. What I’m really annoyed by the the Air Farce’s unwillingess to admit that their function is a support role. Even in their strategic bombing and air superiority capabilities, they exist to support other assets. Air power for the sake of air power is not enough.
I’m sure we can find the people to develop the appropriate starting block for use of fixed-wing assets in a similar role.
You will find them in the Air Force. You’ll probably find few takers since most people in the Air Force picked the Air Force because it is NOT the Army. There is a reason the services split, and its the same reason nearly every other country has a separate Air Force.
The ground support role isn’t why the Air Force wants to rid itself f the A-10, its been part of Air War Doctrine since 1947. The newest of these planes are around 30 years old, and increasingly difficult and expensive to maintain. Any other plane they would have been happy to replace at this point but can’t because of everyone’s emotional attachment to it and quite frankly like the B-52 it still does the job.
Better yet, the Marines; they understand the need for close air support.
Given that the principal opponent the Army faces these days are sandal-wearing savages, a few wings of WW2 P-47s would be damn useful, and cheap.
And promptly fall prey to man-portable SAMs. The Soviets dumped a lot of them on the market, and they’re more than able to kill that vintage of aircraft.
And we can easily build a shitload more of them. He’ll, you could probably build a remotely piloted version still at a fraction of the cost of an A-10, never mind an F35.
Designed to but realistically a mission it is no longer capable of fulfilling
While the expense may or may not be worth it for this you would be hard pressed to argue that the US military does not need a new tank of some sort.
The M1 A2 is a 20+ year old modification of a 30 year old chassis and it is not the best tank on the planet by any stretch any longer
The main issue is that the other owners of tanks able to compete are currently on our side. Everyone we might forseeably be fighting is using even older materiel.
No the Russians have come out with at least 2 and it might be 3 generations of tanks since then. I suppose you could argue that because of Nukes they are not a realistic opponent but they ain’t exactly an ally either

A friend of mine who is in the whole keto dieting thing was surprised I only take 1000 IU of vitamin D per day as supplements. I figured with sun and diet should be enough, though I did not check my blood levels. She apparently takes 10000 IU and this seems big on several keto sites (she follows bulletproof.). Now there is a claim that due to statistical errors recommended dosage of vitamin D is much to low
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5541280/
Now maybe I’ll increase to 2000 IU but 10000 IU seems a bit much… I find it actually difficult to get good info on health, with all the interwebz at my disposal …
You could always just throw your money directly into a toilet. Because megadosing vitamins accomplishes the same thing by pissing it away.
Most yes. But I am pretty sure 1000 IU of Vitamin D is good and it is not that pricey. Maybe not if you live in Texas but in areas where you don’t see the sun for weeks in winter it is a good use of money to supplement vitamin D. Must not put all vitamins in the same category
I take 2000 IU a day. I will see the sun sometime in June here in Michigan.
Don’t megadose on vitamin A.
10000 IU is high but you have a good bit of cushion until toxicity according to this:

I’m big into the keto diet. I only take the Mega Men GNC multivitamin for supplements. Those only have 1600 iu per dose.

Absolutely, females are the reproductive bottleneck. The “women and children first” impulse in a disaster stems from a biological imperative to preserve the species from potential extinction.
that male turtle is out there.. he’s just hidden in a cove so he can recover from all the fucking.

” No business CEOs”
Yes we should hire a former legislator for an executive position.
Like a less-than-one-term Senator from Chicago with no executive experience (or foreign policy experience) at all.
But I’m sure this idiot was just thrilled with Obama.
But, Obama did so well….
/s
And almost no private sector job experience.
Contrary to the “progressive” narrative that private sector experience is evil, it’s actually, ya know, kind of important for understanding how incentives work for both employees and business owners.
I don’t understand why people think a lifetime in politics (sometimes nauseatingly referred to as a “lifetime of public service”) automatically makes one a better choice for public office. So long as a government is going to exist, I don’t want it run by people who know nothing but supra-legal privilege.
I’d prefer a lottery system.
“We don’t respect ignorant racist Fox News watching imbeciles who’s worldview is gimme more even if you have to kill others to do it.”
Fox news watchers are socialists? Actually not too surprising.
“…gimme more even if you have to kill others to do it.”
This must be the un-self-aware edition.
I thought it was the Dems who campaigned on more free shit funded by money taken from others.
From the Junior archives:
Frasier’s Cask of Amontillado
part one
Enough was, indeed, quite enough! Long had I suffered, and many were the humiliations I had endured at the hands of the wretch, Niles Fortunato, and ‘twas after the very last of these I vowed revenge! Fortunato, the raving beast, the taunting childish thing heaping insults, one upon the next, so many of them at me, Frasier Montresor. You who would condemn me should understand: one may, in the spirited byplay among refined gentlemen, hurl a well-aimed barb in my direction and I will savor the bon mot with good humor; but to wantonly dishonor my ancestry, among polite company, in those enviable social climes I’d labored hard to earn a place within, well – to speak plainly, he goes too far!
Fortunato! Is it any wonder, really, that I desired to take his measure? In our circle, at our dinners and at our soirees, the others speak of us as one and the same. Balderdash! I am a first-born, Fortunato is a second son; I come from hearty stock, while the girl-wristed fop Fortunato is sickly and pale. I worked, like a team of mighty oxen, to earn my way into university; Fortunato, born into wealth, saw naught but the best schools in his youth and into adulthood. But we are both counselors, you say? Well, have that! But while Fortunato tended to the mercies of the well-heeled, I, Frasier Montresor, spent many a morning in taverns and the like imparting my expertise to the people.
In retrospect, I suppose the first of my errors was to discuss this matter with others, even if they had previously earned my complete confidence. There was the constable, M. Crane, he with the walking stick and the rapier mind. His enthusiasm for my plight was rather easily constrained.
“Frasier, it’s plain that Fortunato is a loathsome ass; what’s not clear is why this sort of thing would drive a man to seek revenge.”
“That a servant of the law could ask such a question! This Fortunato intends to sully a family’s good name and suffer no redress – well, as a university-trained counselor, it is my sworn duty to help rid a man of his delusions. Nemo me impune lacessit!”
“Your Latin stinks.”
The cheek! A man like Crane, a vulgar man of common lineage, has the gall to disparage my elocution! Fleetingly did I muse upon avenging this insult, but for my respect for the elderly, Crane has earned respite from my wrath.
My soul could not permit me to undertake my revenge without the reassurances of a sympathizer, and I knew exactly where to find one. Rosalyn, the comely, unmarried lady whom I acquaintenced in the course of my work had suffered Fortunato’s japes nearly so much as I. I quite naturally expected to find in her a kindred spirit, but even here I did not find the reassurance I sought.
“Fortunato? God, just leave him be, Frasier. I’ve taken more insults than a lady should from that irreverent imp, but you don’t see me retaliating with violence.”
“First of all, it is the duty of gentlemen, and not ladies, to effect the sort of justice which honor demands. Second of all, have you no sense of outrage? If not for yourself, then for others? I have been wronged to excess, Rosalyn, and I cannot, nor shall not, allow the perpetrator to go unpunished! Nemo me impune lacessit!“
“I’m sorry, I don’t speak French.”
French!? French?? What is this community coming to? Is there no one left who recognizes a proper pronunciation of Latin? First M. Crane, now the harlot! It’s unfathomable!
There were others who lent me an ear – Lady Moon, the Englishwoman with mysterious mental powers; Kenneth, the town crier; Briscoe, the philanderer and sporting enthusiast; Chesterton, the ambiguously effeminate gourmand – but none of them seemed to grasp that the cackling fool Fortunato was due a righteous retribution. Though my resolve was weakened slightly by their lack of sympathy, it was not broken. For mine is the cause of Good! I wield the sword of the Just! And with it I shall banish the Wicked! Nemo me impune lacessit! Yes, and NONE SHALL CRITIQUE MY LATIN EVERMORE!!
Tune in tomorrow for the exciting conclusion!
Definitely has a nice Victorian vibe. Is this some kind of Affluenza piece?
Negative correlation between salivary testosterone concentration and preference for sophisticated music in males
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0191886917306980
Higher testosterone levels in men were linked to lower preferences for sophisticated music, including classical, jazz and avant-garde music.
Meh sophisticated is sort of subjective …
Hmm… I had a gay friend in high school who liked avant-garde music – John Cage, Albert Ayler, Captain Beefheart, etc. Correlation?
Enough to write a paper and get it published!
Captain Beefheart is good stuff. I support the right of gays and heterosexuals to like his music
No Manillow and Liza Minnelli?
So do derp-y jocky types always like Dave Matthews Band, or something like that? Sure, I’d buy that theory.
What, no mention of the title game? Regarding Ngokoue. Reminds me, and you hockey guys may recall, of the alleged racial slur made by Shane Down towards a French-Canadian player. The reason I bring this up because it was similar circumstances in that no one heard anything and it never was proven. Yet, former Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre who was a liberal minister at the time made a scene.
What kind of an opportunistic piece of shit Coderre is?
Just read the opening paragraphs:

Pure sleaze that fat head is.
MP not minister. I forget if he was ever a minister. Who cares? Minister of Shitheads. That’s what he is/was.
Heh.
Politicians truely have no shame, and obviously think everyone is as stupid as they are, cause no one else would think anyone else would believe such a stupid excuse.
What’s an example of a racist slur against a French-Canadian? I promise not to use it on my Montreal-born girlfriend.
Tabernac yo Mama.
Frog. They call the rest of the country ‘tete carre’ (square head).
That’s the extent of it.
They’re hyper sensitive vis-vis the rest of Canada.
When you listen to Montreal radio there’s a lot of talk and references (usually condescending) towards Toronto. When you listen to Toronto, Montreal is rarely mentioned.
That’s actually kind of sad.
Yeah but everyone hates Toronto. It’s like Canadian Chicago and California all rolled into one, it is the core of our hatred.
Celebrate Crystal Gayle’s birthday with Eddie Rabbitt and a cheesy love song.
Well, I love a rainy night.
I actually like this song.
And now feel like a big dummy for not knowing Crystal Gayle and Loretta Lynn are sisters.
Huh, I didn’t know that either.
Huh. Neither did I.
Huh x 3
One of the big surprise albums I bought was One from the Heart, which has duets with Tom Waits and Crystal Gayle. Very good – the soundtrack is apparently a lot better than the movie.
Jaylen Brown: ‘Sport is a mechanism of control in America’

Racism definitely exists across America today – no one expect racism to completely disappear
But [Donald] Trump has made it a lot more acceptable for racists to speak their minds -oh totally
“There’s this idea of America that some people have to win and some have to lose so certain things are in place to make this happen. Some people have to be the next legislators and political elites and some have to fill the prisons and work in McDonald’s. That’s how America works. It’s a machine which needs people up top, and people down low. – makes sens. thats deep

That sounds like what progressives believe, they just quibble about who is on top. (No snickering!)
He did go to Berkeley, albeit briefly.
Why are Lefties always denigrating McDonalds workers?
It’s a job that almost anyone can get, so it’s great “first job” for teenagers. It could also be very important for less-desirable employees – perhaps those with criminal records – so that they can get experience and a good reference to get a better job in the future and get their lives back on track. Also, McDonalds does a lot of internal promotion, so it’s an opportunity in itself.
That’s the problem.
You can’t have these people gaining a work ethic, thinking people should get promoted on merit or deserve to get paid consumate to their productive value!
I just finished the latest 5th Column podcast. There were some interesting parts but as usual I am glad that they don’t call themselves a libertarian podcast.
Needs more Kmele.
The Kmele special conversation episodes were great.
Nothing against Welch (although, I think he’s not as good recently), but Kmele is the only one who voices a contrarian opinion on the podcast. For the most part, Moynihan and Welch just regurgitate the prevailing narrative. Whether I agree with the prevailing narrative or not, why would I listen to a podcast spouting the same points as any other podcast? Kmele is really the only reason why I listen anymore
I agree 100%. Welch and Moynihan come across like “mainstream” media talking heads with some libertarian ideas.
To be fair, Welch slammed Obama hard for being way worse on freedom of the press than Trump.
Moynihan’s special episode with Tina Brown was absolutely horrible.
It was amazing to hear them talk about all the people that they met at cocktail parties and how you had to cozy up to them for access to pols.
And Welch bristles when anyone dares to suggest that they tow the lion journalistically to keep getting invited to the cocktail parties.
Haven’t gotten to it yet. I assume you’re excepting my man-crush Kmele from that. He’s libertarian af.
Yeah Kmele is great! He is the only reason I listen but he also explicitly says it is not a libertarian podcast. Moynihan does not claim to be a libertarian. Welch is good on some issues but his TDS shows too much. I think he tries to be “fair and balanced” but his dislike of Trump skews his opinions.

About 13,000 holidaymakers are trapped without electricity in the upmarket Swiss ski resort of Zermatt, unable to leave because of heavy recent snowfall and an exceptional risk of avalanches, authorities have said.

This is real. Some lady who writes for the New Yorker (of course) and writes for a late night talk show apparently thought this was appropriate
Apparently the backlash was too much. “Hellp these evil men are harassing me” happened real fast. It’s funny how femenists complain about structural sexism but they are so quick to play the “helpless girl harassed by men” card.
“Ignorant” and wrong “side of history”. She forgot “problematic” and “vast majority of people”. Bad bot.
”Best of luck from the other side of history.’
Nothing beats people clearly ignorant of history, claim to be on the ‘right side’ of it.
I had a prog friend who did nothing but rail about Trump being a Nazi. When I pressed him (moving him around like a cat does a toy) I eventually got him to admit he never actually read books on WWII or Nazi Germany or anything from the era.
But he just *knew* Trump was a Nazi. I mean, look at the language that he uses!
It’s unreal.
More stupefying is their urge to link the genetic lineage of anyone they don’t like to Nazi Germany. We saw it with the whole “Drumpf” thing, and I vaguely recall someone doing something similar with Bush. If I was of German descent, I’d be pretty pissed about all of this.
You know who else was a pissed-off German?
My brother’s ex?
Otto von Bismark?
Arminius?
Most of these idiots don’ even know that the Nazis were socialists that just disagreed with the communists on how to fuck over the masses.
“Please stop.”
She tweeted this in Jeb!’s low-energy voice.

Overheard at press freedom group
Reporter 1: Yeah, sure Putin has reporters killed and the Chinese ‘disappear’ journalists, but Trump made Jim Acosta cry
Jim Acosta: It’s true *sniffles*
Reporter 2: We’re going to look like complete hacks if we name Trump the top threat to a free press in the world
Reporter 1: Since when has pushing a political narrative not been considered journalism?
Reporter 2: Are you serious right now?
Jim Acosta: Guys, I’m about to cry thinking about this whole thing *sniffles*
Reporter 1: Trump is truly a monster
I say again, the best thing that this president has going for him is his opposition. These people are insane.
Lucky for Trump they’re also incredibly stupid.
Don’t forget deranged.
Doesn’t oppression usually reduce what it’s oppressing? Or are all these media outlets underground?
The government is really, really, incompetent.
They’re tweeting from a FEMA camp.
By tapping in morse code on the aluminum siding with a shard of bone they snapped off their pinky. Pulitizers are won this way.
Mistreating the press is another area Obama got/gets a free pass on.
Prick.
I pray everyday his legacy collapses to the point people just ignore him.
The press didn’t mind the Obama administration actually using a heavy hand against those it deemed not too be kissing its ass, but they will never, ever forgive Trump for showing them too be the dnc operatives with bylines most of them are. That to these morons is a bigger threat to freedom than basically being agents of the state as long as the state is run by the people that do the right sort of thinking (proggie idiotry).
In the last 18 months, Erdogan’s government has arrested 310 journalists and shut down 187 different media outlets (via https://turkeypurge.com/). But sure, Trump’s a bigger threat.
I love the comments citing right-wing sources — such as WaPo and the NYT.
Finally, celebrate my birthday with Fee Waybill and the kid in the video that I wanted to be when I was 13.

No prob. Birthdays this time of year are . . . overshadowed by Christmas. Any hoo, David Bowie’s birthday was yesterday, got anything for that?
It was? I knew it was Elvis’s birthday yesterday…

Another report, by the Immigrant Legal Resource Center, estimates that stripping the protections from Salvadorans, Hondurans and Haitians would deprive Social Security and Medicare of about $6.9 billion in contributions over a decade, and would shrink the gross domestic product by $45.2 billion.
Officials under multiple presidents have renewed the protections year after year, allowing hundreds of thousands of people to enlarge their foothold on American life. But the Trump administration has emphasized that the permissions were originally granted because of wars and natural disasters in the immigrants’ home countries and intended to last only until conditions there improved.
“Temporary” must have an alternate meaning I’m unfamiliar with. I personally have no objection whatsoever to stable, productive people being allowed tom stay put. I can’t help wondering just how many of the people torn from their American dream really fit that description. And, of course, the Deep State will make sure to throw the baby out with the bath water, in order to make Trump look as monstrous as possible.
Also- why doesn’t the NYT delve into the reason so many Americans are not qualified to take jobs in the physical labor trades?
Temporary = irrevokably permanent when used to describe a policy taken in response to an exigency that would be unpopular if acknowledged to be permanent. As in, “there is nothing so permanent as a temporary government program.”
A bunch of optimists think they’re gonna beat back The Mouse when the next copyright extension fight comes up. I am more cynical.
*EDIT FAIRY SAVES DAY*

Link needs more sugar.
I just got back from a 4 day drip to Da Nang and Hoi An.
Blown away, even though it was my third trip to ‘Nam. Da Nang was pretty cool and I did get higher than I ever have been in my life, which includes a 2006 MLK Day acid trip of Paul McCartney c. 1966 proportions.
Hoi An is maybe the most touristy place I’ve ever been to but it was so pretty and compact. Nice to walk around everywhere and chill at the restaurants and the beautiful lanterns and boats on the river.
I also got a blazer hand-made for me and I’m absolutely in love with it. It’s very against type for me as it’s quite silly, but I think making little style changes like that are good for oneself.
The Marble Mountains and their shrine-caves were among the most amazing structures I have ever been to in my life. Put Angkor Wat to shame IMO. The only things that rival it are things like the Pantheon or Colosseum or Dover Castle–places that have an inherit romantic history for me.
Fantastic trip and fantastic food. Didn’t really talk to anyone for 4 days. Just walking and exploring. Had a great time. Today back at work was not as unpleasant as I thought it would be.
That is all!
Did you ever tell us if they fixed your innards? (I admit, I could have missed the update)
Pretty sure his guts just liquefied. He was able to carry them in a hot water bottle during the whole VN trip.
I can feel some bad business in my right kidney but it’s gotten better. Just feels like general soreness. The colitis hasn’t reared it’s head in a month, so I hope that it’s better.
Still is in the back of my mind, naturally, but for now I’m doing well on my feet.
Ah, okay. Hope it continues to improve.
That sounds amazing.
Come one there must be something un-social-justicey about white cishet shitlords colonizing poor Vietnamese by visiting their country.
got a blazer hand-made for me – this is exploitation
Didn’t really talk to anyone for 4 days. – racist
Had a great time. – this is wrong
I’ll leave the rest to others.
But overall I would like to visit Vietnam but I am not sure it is a priority and it can be a bit pricey to reach from these here backwaters
If I ended up in Vietnam I wouldn’t talk to anyone my entire time there.
Admittedly, it would be because I only speak english and I’d be sitting in the airport waiting for my connecting flight out of there. (I can only imagine ending up there because of some weird routing to ANZAC countries.
Not hooking up with Vietnamese ladies and letting us live it vicariously is his biggest sin.
Awesome. I’ve always wanted to travel around the Far East. Haven’t had that chance yet, but I’ll get around to it one of these days. What would you recommend as a starter? I’ve been considering Tokyo, Hong Kong or Singapore as an easily digestible appetizer before moving on to more challenging locales.
Hong Kong is one of my favorite places on earth. Just a really cool city to hang out in. Can probably do it in 3 days. I lived in Singapore for 2 years and have conflicted personal memories from my ex and my job there, which I hated, but it’s an extremely expensive ($16 for a beer at a normal bar) and very clean and cosmopolitan city. Best thing about it is that you can fly from the by-far the best airport in the world to all sorts of places for super cheap.
Tokyo is also a lot of fun, but also very bustling and confusing. I’d recommend Osaka/Kyoto over Tokyo.
Of SE Asian countries, I think my favorite was Cambodia. All of the food and sites to see as the others, but more chill than Vietnam/Thailand and more stuff to see than the HYPER chill Laos.
My trip to Sri Lanka was also one of my favorite trips of all time. Very cool mix of everything.
Singapore is the easiest but it’s like an Asian Manhattan. English, architecture, food–world class. Hot as balls, though.
If you want a more in-depth description of other places just ask. I’ve been all around Asia these last 8-9 years. The only big spot that I haven’t been to is China, because I refuse to go there as much as I would like to.
Hong Kong is one of my favorite places on earth.
Ditto. And it’s even better now that I don’t have to squeeze my eyes shut and pray when the airplane lands.
Ever fly into Gibraltar?
HK was worse back in the day. The wingtips were close enough to the apartment buildings that you could look in the windows and see what people were having for dinner.
Worse than Mucho Grande, you’re saying.
That is my abiding memory of flying into HK, looking into people’s windows and feeling like I was on a runaway elevator.
Serious pants-wetting.
OMWC is correct. Landing at night at the old HK airport was terrifying.
Kooky. I’d like to experience some of that when I’m able to travel again.
My dad told me about Marble Mountain. He was impressed as well. Apparently when he was there, the US was shooting at it because insurgents holed up in the caves (this is from my poor memory). Is that true, was there damage from artillery or whatever?
I didn’t see any direct damage, but the whole area was under fire for a long time. Right on the demarkation line. They repaired a lot of stuff since then. Nothing stood out, war-wise.
Absolutely Indiana Jones shit. So cool.
Sounds like a blast. What did you get high on?
I’ve spent a lot of time in Asia, but haven’t been to Vietnam yet (though Nixon tried to get me there). My main worry is being able to eat anything- it’s a very beef-and-seafood-centric cuisine, and even so-called vegetarian food there has fish sauce, I have been told.
Hold on…. you’re a vegetarian? I don’t know if we can be friends anymore…
I only judge people on their diet if they try to push their diet on me or harangue me for what I eat.
Of course, I don’t have any friends anyway…
I don’t harangue, I just make dying animal sounds every time you take a bite.
That’s strange, I’m not a vegetarian and I do the same thing when I take a bite.
Don’t moo with your mouth full! Didn’t your mother teach you manners?
Yeah but aren’t there a lot of Buddhists still there? At least it seems like wherever you’ve had a strong Buddhist culture you’ve got a pretty robust vegetarian culinary culture even if the Buddhism part isn’t as big anymore.
Vietnamese Buddhism does not seem to have the same vegetarian tradition as, say, Chinese Buddhism. In China, a meal at the temple was always a treat and safe for my guts.
I did buy some week on my last night there, but I was at an ex-pat bar and they were selling HUGE balloons of NOX.
I’ve done it before, but never in these quantities. I did one massive balloon for about $4 and got primed. Dance music blaring. Then I bought two more. Did them and literally lost myself in the music. I’ve never felt anything like it before and I’ve done lots of drugs for a long time. Feeling every beat as a pleasurable pulse through my entire body. I lost the ability to see and just saw tie-died rhythmic patterns. Couldn’t control my body and was convulsing with the music. Made me understand why people like to MDMA/etc and rave.
I was a little bit shook and taken aback by it, how powerful it was. Lasted maybe three minutes. Straight-up hijacked my brain.
I had a really good time.
Wish you would’ve posted here while you were on that. “Week” and “NOX”. Nitrous Oxide? Noxema?
Nitrous oxide. Big. Big. Balloons.
I couldn’t see and couldn’t help gyrating with the beat. Typing would have been an absolute impossibility.
I should also add that I’ve done NOX a lot. I stupidly (as in, the stupidest thing I’ve ever done) used to do it while driving and delivering Jimmy Johns. I did the shit on acid.
This was….totally different. Completely lost in rhythm and screensaver vision.

Another reason why the American version of religious liberty is so important to a free society. The French are literally just trolling Muslim immigrants for lolz. This is insane
Yeah, but Americans are monsters of racism and intolerance.
It’s all fun and games until a school lunchroom gets suicide bombed.
Shows the huge disconnect between rural / suburban French and their national and EU leaders.
The locals are seriously worried about being overwhelmed and losing their culture. I believe things will get far worse than pork chop lunches.
I dunno if I would call it trolling. I think it’s more like trying to keep vampires away by putting garlic in all the lunches.
You literally just compared people to vampires because of their religion. That’s not logical
Oy looking at the fuckin’ Vulcan here…
In all seriousness this is the standard post-French Revolution M.O. on ‘secularism’, i.e. “you can have your religion, just don’t expect any kind of catering or respect for it and don’t expose it in public.”
Long time, no see, Titor.
I know that this goes along with the French concept of ‘laicity’ (I probably misspelled it). I’m just pointing out how reactionary the concept is and how the American version of religious liberty is superior, even if it is not in vogue anymore
I was speaking as to the mindset of the people setting the menu.
The Danes did something similar to this, I think
That’s an interesting one for religious liberty. Requiring schools (and presumably government institutions generally) to provide meals that conform to religious strictures starts looking like establishment of religion, rather than permitting free exercise of religion. Prohibiting religious people from bringing in their own meals starts looking like prohibiting free exercise.
In American schools an alternative meal must be provided if requested. A government specifically choosing to serve only pork in order to target Muslims (which is what occurred here) would be deemed illegal in the US. The US concept is more enlightened
I actually that’s about right, but this is another example, IMO, of how government involvement in many things leads to irreconcilable conflicts between the mandate that free exercise of religion be permitted, and the prohibition on government establishment of religion (broadly defined to include more than just formal government adoption of an official religion).
The best way to avoid this would be to eliminate public schools. But, in the meantime government institutions should make accommodations for a person’s deeply held beliefs and be explicitly banned from disfavoring any particular belief. I never understood why people would move away from supporting religious liberty, especially those who believe in limited government (*cough* Gary Johnson *cough). Especially now when the Courts have extended religious accommodation to simply personal beliefs outside of organized religion, like Pastafarians being allowed to wear colanders in drivers license photos (just one example). Instead, we should push for an extension of religious accommodation and not retreat.

Seeing as Oprah 200% knew Harvey Weinstein was a monster, how come she is so loved?
Well some of them are evil and don’t care some of them are stupid.
She signals correctly. Leftism is not about results or actions, its about expressing the correct thoughts.
^This. Whatever you think about Rose McGowan she hit the nail right on the head. She basically called out the Time’s Up or whatever “movement” for being total hypocrites. And she’s 100% right. Wearing black and making a few cheeky remarks to protest what is ostensibly a systemic, ubiquitous culture of sexual assault in Hollywood and then spending the next week patting yourself on the back is like going to a Klan rally and not eating the cole slaw in order to protest lynching.
I notice they aren’t going to hard on the whole “fat shaming” thing. It’s a mystery.
Assuming Ken is a man… Talk about patriarchy.
I assume Ken is a douche.
I mean she committed the awful sin of being born to the wrong man. It’s not like she’s toed the progressive line everyone else.
Right? Ok, SJWs, a man just told a woman that she doesn’t get to be a part of a movement against sexual harassment of women. Do you a.) shut him down because he’s mansplaining and patriarching and all, or b.) say nothing because the woman in question is the daughter of someone you don’t like. Your move.

We’re, like, totally not, like a high school girl clique. As if. Whatever.
Seems like lefties oughta court the one person in the administration (or at least potentially influential to the POTUS) who is remotely friendly to their ideas instead of creating a toxic rift, but whatevs.
It’s nothing but signaling without consideration to what might happen an hour from now, let alone a day, a month etc.
I’m not a fan, at all, of family members having any role in the executive branch, but so much of the criticism of Ivanka seems to be the basest jealousy, hatred of her just because she’s richer, smarter, and better looking than her critics.
Whenever someone mentions Chicago cops, this is always the first thing that comes to mind.
I was not disappointed.
My criticism of that scene has always been that there is no way that you could have a high speed car chase in downtown Chicago
I’m probably over thinking it
That would be correct
It must have been a traffic nightmare down there the day(s) they filmed that. They would have had to block off a lot of streets to film that entire chase sequence.
They came in on a 3 day weekend (memorial day or labor day) and shot everything without really publicizing it. In and out; clean; with no problems.
And that, my friends, is how you sleep with a married woman.
Thanks kinnath!

Another porn star perishes! Oh the humanity!
http://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/porn-star-olivia-nova-dead-11822592
Question: Why are individuals that act in pornographic videos always “stars” by default? Not everyone that acts in regular movies is a star. Shouldn’t the people in question have to display some kind of special skill to be called a “star”?
I think it’s an outgrowth of the come on line by the talent scouts. “I can make you a star…”
Because the combined appellation “porn star” originated as a derogitory term from those prostitutes in regular film who didn’t want to be lumped in with their peers in the more honest side of the business.
You want to play the supporting role?
Don’t judge him.
It distinguishes them from amateurs. And any chick that lets me see them naked is a star in my book.
*sends JBs phone number to Trigglypuff*
I work part time at a “gentleman’s club” and occasionally we have porn-star feature dancers. It will vary from a performer who does 100s of videos to one who has done 20 girl-girl videos.
I never heard of her.

Elon keeps finding new and creative ways to waste all our money.
It’s a spy satellite, how do they know it was actually ‘lost’?
That’s just what they want us to think? Well, I’m not gonna think that then.
I chuckled this morning seeing that story. A lot of pub for a secret spy satellite.
There’s an old conspiracy theory concerning SeaSat (launched in 1978) that the military sabotaged it because they thought it could detect submarine wakes. I know several people who worked on the satellite that believe it wholeheartedly.

I rather enjoy VDH’s writing.
https://amgreatness.com/2018/01/08/trump-really-crazy/
Yes, he certainly has a way with words and his knowledge of Greek and Roman history is amazing. Still, his non stop shilling for Iraq part deux has left me permanently skeptical of his opinion work.
Yes. I’d wish he’d just stop there, instead of trying tortured analogies to Iraq/Iran
he was strong advocate of invading iraq, and wrote some hideously stupid things in the early 2000s. War Nerd wrote a very funny piece ripping VDH a new one.
I’d much rather we invaded canada and let everyone deliver one free punch to the face of Trudy, his appointees and anyone from the NDP. (I know Trudy’s Liberal Party, I just don’t like the NDP)

What a bad ass. The man is wanted for murder in South America and he openly brags about buying prostitutes. This man needs to be the party chairman
Here’s not actually wanted for murder. They want to question him. That’s it. But given how corrupt they are and how they bungled the case from the git go, he would be an idiot to go back there for questioning.
Still a bad ass

James Damore sues Google, alleging intolerance of white male conservatives
Well this will be fun
It won’t help Google that his memo was a response to their request for suggestions on bringing more women into STEM. Should be interesting…
It’s like an FBI interview – there are no right answers, just excuses to prosecute.
I think companies should be able to be assholes and fire at will for just about anything, including politics, but I’m certain Google ascribes to a one-sided view of that axiom.
The best way to open leftist’s eyes is to make them live by their own rules.
I used to think that, but I’m not so certain about it anymore. They seem invulnerable to cognitive dissonance.
Worse: they revel in it.
To me this is one the important questions of our time. I still don’t know the answer.
I think companies should be able to be assholes and fire at will for just about anything, including politics
Same here, but that’s not the law. AFAIK, you can fire someone for their politics, but not for being white or a male. And because identity politics is always and everywhere a zero-sum game, you can’t advance someone for being non-white or non-male without penalizing someone for being white or a male. Simple math. I can’t believe Google hasn’t paid him off already. The discovery on his lawsuit is going to be brutal, and will probably result in this turning into a class action.
I don’t think his chance of succeeding is low, I actually think its quite good, depending on just how stupid the Google SJWs are about putting things in writing.
I agree, this ought to be fun to watch,
depending on just how stupid the Google SJWs are about putting things in writing.
One thing we know about them is that they looove putting things in writing.
IANAL, but from what I underatand, political views are protected under CA state law. As for putting stuff down in writing, some of the excerpts from the original filing are floating around out there, and the SJWs were really dumb about putting things down in writing.
Their blind self-righteousness, love of bureaucracy, and arrogant sense of the inevitability of the increase of their power most likely led them to proudly and thoroughly document the acts that will damn them. They aren’t the first regime to make that mistake.
Absolutely. If a company has a ridiculously inclusive non-discrimination policy on paper though and broke it by firing this guy, then that’s fair game for him to pursue.
If I knew my case would end up in front of a 9th Circuit judge, I wouldn’t be too worried, either.
His likelihood of success: somewhere between 0% and ‘not a chance’.
This is more about shaming the company and its absurdity, but the media would never report on it
Is it in Federal court? I would think this would be, unless/until appealed up the chain, a matter for the state courts.
Over/under on Google’s response to discovery is a printout of a Google search results?
Aside from the race and viewpoint discrimination issues, the filing reveals a really terrible corporate culture there. Being able to “block” co-workers? They run their entire company like it’s freaking twitter/facebook, no wonder it’s awful.
Check out this reaction to the Bundy verdict:
https://www.wsj.com/articles/judge-moves-to-end-case-against-nevada-rancher-cliven-bundy-two-sons-1515439773
Bundy’s ranching activity, itself, isn’t against the law–even if his non-payment of grazing fees is against the law.
From Suckling’s statement, am I to understand that the Center for Biological Diversity supports imprisoning ranchers as a means to cutting down on ranching activity?
Or am I supposed to believe they’re just worried about the government not getting their grazing fees?
They’re just worried about not getting government grants if they don’t support the government’s position.
They named themselves like a research institution, but I understand they’re really just an advocacy group like PETA or GreenPeace.
And characterizing wilful, malicious prosecutorial misconduct as “bungling” the case. What pap.
What did they want him prosecuted for?
The crime of ranching or the crime of not paying his grazing fees?
They want people to stop ranching.
Apart from that, they don’t give a damn about grazing fees.
Ahh, the Center for Biological Diversity. They helped stop a housing development near me. The development is on some rolling hills, and they claimed it would harm fairy shrimp. Shrimp in a place that never collects so much as a puddle. It was obvious from reading their report that they never even visited the site.
I think companies should be able to be assholes and fire at will for just about anything, including politics, but I’m certain Google ascribes to a one-sided view of that axiom.
I think companies should be able to hire assholes whose views may be abrasive to their co-workers, as long as their work product creates value which carries through to the bottom line.
That sounds like some naked self-interest right there.
Now all I need is to find an employer who agrees …
I have a 50 minute one-way drive to work everyday, so I have lots of free time to think about weird shit. Today’s topic: Does everyone pronounce the word “pour” like I do?
Background: I, and the majority of people around me, pronounce the words poor, pour, and pore the exact same way; like “pore.” Is this common throughout English speaking North America, or is it another Midwestern idiosyncrasy?
The three words sound the same where I grew up in Upstate New York.
What possible other way would there be to pronounce it?
I don’t know with that example, but there are people who pronounce peel like ‘pill’, so I would not be surprised if there were people who could mispronounce one or more of poor, pour, and pore.
Poor :: (po͝or)
Pour & Pore :: (pôr)
Like Frank Reynolds (DeVito) when he talks about his ex-wife: “hoor.”
Like you, I pronounce both pour and pore as pore; I pronounce poor like bluer, only in a single syllable.
And now, I wrap this up with dreadful wordplay: Those are my preferred pronounce.
I pronounce all 3 the same way. I prefer loser over poor though.
Like any good shitlord would.
I pronounce “pour” and “pore” the same. “Poor” sometimes sounds like “pore”‘and sometimes goes more “poohr” depending on how fast I’m talking.
this calls for HM to explain subtle psychological inflections placed on the “o” sound, and why canadians are all secretly psychopaths
It’s no secret.
All three the same. I’ve got the stereotypical mid-Atlantic accent.
Now, how do you pronounce caramel?
if you say “carmel”, like a camel but as tho its a car, you’re halfway to living in a trailer park
But only halfway.
Got too drunk and tripped at the threshold?
Hit a speed bump too fast and a wheel fell off
But if you pronounce it with three syllables you’re halfway to living on Fire Island.
I split the difference and say “CARE-a-mull”, but then half my family says “brek-frust” to refer to the first meal of the day, so…
“Melted Sucrose”
Bow down to the gods of social justice
… the Amazon founder’s net worth has crossed $105 billion — surpassing Bill Gates for the largest fortune in modern history, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
But compared to Gates — who has given away what would amount today to more than $60 billion in cash and Microsoft stock over the past 20 years, mostly to the foundation he runs with his wife, Melinda — Bezos’s philanthropic giving has been significantly more modest.
Bezos, along with his wife, MacKenzie, donated $15 million to their alma mater Princeton in 2011 and the CEO has also given tens of millions of dollars to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.
He is also believed to look at his other businesses, the Washington Post and the space company Blue Origin, as companies that have the potential to make big, positive impacts on society, too — the former as one of the nation’s most important journalism houses and the latter, in which he says he invests $1 billion annually, as a vehicle to help move heavy industry into space one day to save this planet.
Both, however, are for-profit enterprises.
Obviously, profit is evil, and disqualifies any beneficial effects which might derive from those activities.
I think paying people like Eugene Robinson and David Weigel a salary to spout a bunch of nonsense qualifies as charity.
I don’t consider that charitable.
I don’t either. They have enough fucking money in their endowment.
Obviously, profit is evil, and disqualifies any beneficial effects which might derive from those activities.
I was thinking about the concept of charity the other day. I have several neighbors who are desperate for work and don’t want a handout. If I have limited discretionary funds, is it less morally sound to hire them for work where we both benefit (i.e., profit) than instead sending off that money to a distant IRS designated non-profit corporation and letting my neighbor beg at food bank that week? I think keeping my money local and helping my neighbors out, even if I benefit, is a better use than having it stock the vending machines at Non-profit Inc. We do donate money locally too if a neighbor is undergoing a disaster and needs help, or if one of my wife’s patients’ needs new shoes (given anonymously) or something like that.
Scaling this up, how much more worthwhile would contributions on a billionaire scale be if they had a benefit baked in while targeting areas that normally wouldn’t be invested in because of the risk. I read yesterday that one of the major pharm companies is going to discontinue all research on Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s because it’s too financially risky. What if someone like the Facebook guy poured $100 million into a slew of promising start-ups targeting Alzehimer’s instead of the contribution he made to the Baltimore (or Chicago?) public school system? No, these wouldn’t be considered charitable non-profit contributions, but the amount of risk involved would prevent normal funding unless it was view as income willing to be lost in pursuit of advancements.
“I think paying people like Eugene Robinson and David Weigel a salary to spout a bunch of nonsense qualifies as charity.”
I characterize this as a selfless act in the Randian sense, as it is the trading of value in exchange for nothing or even negative value.
Unless he’s seeing at least a $1B return each year, I think that’s the definition of non-profit.
Please, Lord, please may the Rock never run for political office. I like him as an actor and I want it to stay that way.
You shut up I want to see debates where Democrat Nominee The Rock gives Republican Nominee Kane the People’s Elbow.

Kane’s going to run on the LP ticket.
Heenan would just pull him off.. then while the ref’s back is turned, Steve Austin hits The Rock with a stone cold stunner to win the Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship of the President of the United States and shotguns two beers from the top turnbuckle.
The only acting I’ve ever seen The Rock do is in the ring.
He jumped off a building and died early in The Other Guys. So that was cool.
Apropos; my favorite Steven Seagal movie is Executive Decision. He dies very early in the movie trying to go from a stealth jet to a 747 mid-air. I remember feeling true joy when I first watched that scene.
Aim for the bushes?

“Idiocracy” is arriving sooner than anticipated.
Bitcoin is baaad, children, mmmmkay?
Bitcoin’s price is not a reflection of its growing usage as currency; it reflects merely demand for the mirage of its speculative value. Its price is rising only because people all over the world are hearing stories of how others doubled or tripled their money in a short period — and they don’t want to miss out. Unsophisticated investors are taking out loans to buy bitcoins. Those who have spent the currency feel remorseful when they see its price subsequently increase, so they hoard it.
Bitcoin was invented by an unknown person or group to be a digital currency. It allows money to be transferred directly between individuals using cryptography. The bank ledger is distributed to all users, and complex mathematical transactions ensure transaction integrity. Such a system makes it difficult for governments to know the identities of people exchanging money, so it has become a haven for money laundering, drug dealing, and corruption.
————–
What is most worrisome for the planet is the energy expenditure that verifying transactions now requires. The bitcoin network is reportedly consuming energy at an annual rate of 32TWh — about as much as the entire nation of Denmark. Each transaction consumes 250kWh, enough energy to power an average Western home for nine days. China has become the dominant bitcoin-mining nation, with its provinces providing ultra-cheap energy to miners.
Not only is it a giant tulip mania bubble and a haven for criminality, bitcoin is destroying the planet.
Such a system makes it difficult for governments to know the identities of people exchanging money, so it has become a haven for money laundering, drug dealing, and corruption.
The state hates competition.
Not only that, the poor have no access to cryptocurrency! Something should be done!
but less than the continent of Africa
OK, I’m really late to the party here, but TWh (Terawatt-hours) is not a rate of energy expenditure, it’s an amount of energy. TW by itself is a rate. I assume that’s the only faulty part of their analysis…
This seems unconstitutional, but…
Tolls would solve that problem

If those people didn’t want NYC commuters driving on their ROADZ, they should have put their town somewhere else.
I am 100% in favor of that sort of “workfare”. I had a conversation with somebody a while back about how “community service voluntarism” doesn’t count if the volunteer (high school kids, in this case) derived a benefit from the work. It’s ridiculous. In my view, the essence of civilized social interaction is mutual benefit.
And lord knows how taxing volunteer work can be. Much better the unemployed sit at home feeling worthless than be forced to expend labor. It’s a mental health thing.
“community service voluntarism” doesn’t count if the volunteer (high school kids, in this case) derived a benefit from the work
And presumably that includes learning new skills or even just feeling good about yourself. And the people preaching this claim to be “altruists”, interested in love of mankind. Funny, how the whole spiel winds up completely destroying that.
This is training the kids to learn self-abnegation.
Y’all honkey cisheteros need some balckfemsplainin’
I owe a lot to feminism, and I’ll never forget that.
But some feminists also frighten me.
As one of the moderators for the Everyday Feminism Facebook page, I read some of the most uplifting and harmful comments.
While some of the page is filled with inspiring testimonies from marginalized voices, thought-provoking questions, and interesting examinations of exclusionary language, there are also many feminists whose comments leave me feeling deeply concerned about our fight for equality.
Feminists make me tired.
I owe a lot of keks to feminism, and I’ll never forget to laugh at them.
I’ve seen something like 100 articles in the last 2 weeks about “OMG 2017 was so awful”
its repeated to the extent that its become a mantra. 2017 was a horrorshow.
Why? Trump. If you’re still wondering “why?” you’re part of the problem.
i don’t recall any wars, or race-riots. Did prince die in 2017? or was that last year? Honestly i think the whole idea that a “year” was horrible to be a strange concept. events are bad, years just are.
I liked 2017.
2017 was bad for me and my family on a personal level. One of our daughters was assaulted in school, then we had to go to court to keep the other student expelled. The same daughter had a serious intestinal blockage, almost died, and was on tube feeding for 3 months. Our oldest, at 20, is still refusing to be a responsible adult. My work situation is still deteriorating.
So that’s why 2017 was awful for me. I actually liked some of the Trump parts. But I think to most other people, it was just that they hate Trump.
I’m glad to hear she survived.
Sorry to hear that.
Thanks guys! Hopefully we can make some progress with some of those other issues in 2018.
Why? Trump. If you’re still wondering “why?” you’re part of the problem.
At this point, if you’re not “part of the problem”, you’re part of the problem.
Remember this when you notice how many people that fucking love science also think Oprah should run for office.
I tend to agree that Oprah is the left’s Trump, and that the difference is largely a matter of style.
Joe Arpaio is running for Senate
If he wins I’m all in favor of detouring Trump’s wall so it goes all the way around Arizona. It’d be for the greater good.
Can Arizona no send a fuck-up t the Senate? They elected Barry Goldwater many times – what happened that have elect spectacular assholes?
My BIL got picked up for drunk driving in Arizona on the way back from Nevada to San Diego with some friends. AZ has very stringent drunk driving laws, and they’d stopped and had a few beers at dinner on the way back. He wound up spending the weekend in one of those tent jails of Sheriff Joe’s. When they turned him loose, they dropped him at the same spot they picked him up, about three miles into the desert on a highway. He hasn’t been a fan of Arizona or Sheriff Arpaio since.
Because, you know, 17 years isn’t enough time to rebuild some infrastructure and get people home after an earthquake.
I am sure it has nothing to do with the millions of dollars those people are funneling down to the homeland every month.
My favorite kind of racists. I love the crazies who insist that ::insert favorite minority here:: created everything good in the universe, but Whitey came along and stole it.
The link is a story to an asshole professor (who is also Native American) who retaliated against a white student for cultural appropriation. Braids and a neck scarf were the main rubs in the story.
The story doesn’t go into exactly how Whitey stole motorcycle culture from the natives, which is actually the most interesting part of the story to me.
I assume he’s talking about the Indian horse cultural – which they appropriated from the Spanish.
That is sort of what I thought too. Given that he is one of those “my tribe invented everything good” type of nuts, I also figure he thinks that indians did already have horses, but the White Eyes told lies about it in the history books.
Uh, Holiness?

A statement like ‘cocaine is a helluva drug’?
Here’s a statement: her eyebrows freak me out, I don’t think she’s attractive, and a twenty-something actress posing topless is not going to reach the audience the advertisers intend.
Her eyebrows are fucked up. I bet she needs topiary shears to trim her bush if her eyebrows are that thick.
I don’t know what chicks are doing with eyebrows. The constantly surprised trend seems to be giving way to the Sam Eagle look.
“New ‘Feminist Business School’ to Fight ‘Masculine’ Capitalism
People who yearn to become entrepreneurs may find guidance at the new Feminist Business School, an online program that aims to help women launch businesses founded upon the theory of “feminine entrepreneurship” and “body-loving business practices.”
Starting next week, the California-based Feminist Business School will play host to an eight-week online “Concepts and Conceptions” course, during which seasoned “midwives” will teach women about the stages of giving “birth” to a new business.
Each week of the course will focus on a different topic. Students will start with “getting grounded,” and will eventually progress into more advanced topics such as “the myth of meritocracy,” the “stages of birthing a business,” and “toppling the patriarchy.”
Understanding feminist theory before starting a business is crucial, since it will give you a “huge leg-up on established entrepreneurs” and help you “avoid the frustrations and pitfalls of outdated masculine business models,” according to the program’s website.
The $1,200 class was developed by Jennifer Armbrust, an artist who graduated from Evergreen State University with a degree in critical theory. After graduating, she founded an art gallery, later becoming a performance artist in Portland, Oregon.
After working as a performance artist, Armbrust founded Sister, a California-based project aimed at promoting “teaching and tools for the feminine economy.” Coined by Armbrust, the “feminine economy” refers to a vision of business that shuns traditional capitalism.
“If capitalism is an economy that values masculine traits, what could another economy look like?” asks Armbrust, arguing that the traditional economy is based on masculine traits such as “individualism” and “speed and efficiency.”
These traits, Armbrust claims, should be shunned in favor of more feminine ones, such as “mindfulness,” “gratitude,” and “generosity” — all traits that can help promote the “redistribution of money and power.””

God bless a good hussle.
“The $1,200 class was developed by Jennifer Armbrust, an artist who graduated from Evergreen State University with a degree in critical theory. After graduating, she founded an art gallery, later becoming a performance artist in Portland, Oregon.”
I actually think we need people like this in society to identify the truly stupid and worthless people are who willing to hand them money. I would pay her for her customer list so I know who to be on the lookout for.
Starting next week, the California-based Feminist Business School will play host to an eight-week online “Concepts and Conceptions” course, during which seasoned “midwives” will teach women about the stages of giving “birth” to a new business.
Is it really feminist to give titles to these entrepreneurs based on historical, patriarchal gender roles? As if the only value women have is in their ability to procreate and so it must be alluded to in other facets of society. As if children aren’t a ball and chain that stop women from achieving their full potential, since society forces these heroes to enact the vast majority of the labor of raising them.
Am I doing it right?
8/10

Because when I want business advice, my first thought is to turn to a critical theory graduate whose art gallery was a failure.
Hey, now. She was also a performance artist in Portland. That’s like printing your own money.
Wait. So she’s saying women can’t have individual identities, be fast, or be efficient?
Being a responsible shepherd of your investors’ funds is patriarchal. Much better to lose them money and lay off your employees, that’s what the “female economy” is all about.
Sort of brings new meaning to “throwing money down a hole” doesn’t it?

We are in kind of a lull. Next stage of the plan calls for building out indoor grow space on the farm, and only using the outdoor space for hemp plants, which is only 1 turn a season. To do that, we need to finish selling the fall harvest. It is slow going as this past season was massively successful and the glut has caused a prices to be down. They are inching back up and we’ve moved some units here or there. Things are finally picking up and we ca get to seriously working on building out the indoor spaces. But in the interim, we’re in a hurry up and wait mode.
So the last four or five days I’ve watched the entirety of Black Mirror. And all I have to say is, that from season 4, Monkey Needs A Hug may be the 2nd scariest sentence in the English language.
How did the Sessions boomlet last week affect things for you?
Eh. A big nothing burger. The USDA for Oregon has basically said ‘status quo’. There were tons of news stories about it, but our lawdog seems to think unless we see some actual change in patterns of prosecution it isn’t much to worry over. We’re also small enough at this stage that there are plenty of larger targets to go after to give us warning. Which is a bit cut throat, I suppose, but *shrug* that’s business.
Thanks for the update.
